I thought that I would never hear those words......I looave it when you talk like that:-))))

Solar said...

finally finished with the snow shoveling, was a little bit rough in some spots...but nothing out of the norm....

Coreen said...

Ivy,

And how are you guys planning to watch the game, in a group, a party, at home....

Carol said...

Your the man, Solar! Glad we don't have that kind of weather. They called school off here for tomorrow. We are all weinies down here.

Solar said...

Don,

Im going to send you some of this cold, like I did with Tony last year...he wouldn't stop teasing me until I sent a cold chill over to him....

Solar said...

Coreen,

Nice pics, once again...I see that you even have some of the Republican's, and the Dems...

Ivy Green said...

Coreen:

Plan A: Be in Colorado, watch game on Bro's Big Screen, eat some crab cakes

Plan B: Be in Alabama, watch game in the Man Cave, eat some crab cakes

It's going to be Plan B.

Coreen said...

Solar, has the snow ended for you....

Ok, I'll bite, Solar....

Which are the Repubs & which are the dems?

Coreen said...

Ivy,

Plan B sounds good to me. I prefer to watch
my team alone, especially if it is a big game.

Coreen said...

I just thought about it, Solar, you mean Big Al....I think he may just be an independent....

Coreen said...

And Solar, while you are here, this am, a local radio guy who came from Chicago was
talking about pizza & said he had watched a tv
show comparing NY & Chicago pizza. He says
some place called Uno in Chicago (the original not the chains) makes the best deep dish pizza,
on the East coast we have thin crust pizza.

Ivy Green said...

The party at Bro's Place would have been a blast. Maybe will get there for the Super Bowl. We think we'd have ended up watching on some airport tv monitor.

Ivy Green said...

Big Al

Solar said...

Ok, an Independent that looks like an R.

the snow has ended for now...check that, it is not falling very heavily for now...just like a very lite rain.....Im glad that I take the same kind of pills for my back that you do...some times I just take one a day...but im on my third today.....and ready for the next snow....I was over dressed, and it was not cold...no wind to speak of...so it was just like a work out....

Im surprised that you pinks like football so much...cool. Joe Namath was one of my football heroes also....

Solar said...

Coreen,

Uno Pizza is the 2nd best......Ninos Pizza that make a special Sicilian style for me...makes the best thick crust...

Ivy Green said...

I am shocked by an item just on the local news, and must stand corrected from my comment a day ago. Jefferson County (AL) does, indeed, have sand trucks AND snow plows! Who knew?

Ivy Green said...

There's a lot of people stranded in the Chicago airport. That's probably where we'd have gotten stuck if we'd tried to make the trip.

Ivy Green said...

I do love Uno's and miss it. I don't think any of our pizza here is that good. Not like what we were used to in the northeast.

Coreen said...

I'm with you about the g/c capsules.. When I
have to do anything out of the ordinary I take
one plus a Motrin before....And yes this last
week I was popping a couple a day.....

I have a couple of down parkas I wear for snow(not at the same time) fake fur lined shoe boots, earmuffs, fleece gloves & my NYJets wool cap......I am a vision of a 'beauty queen'....

Solar said...

In the past whenever we finished a project, a home or something, for the past 15 years, I would call up Ninos and have them make me two party size Pizza specials, with Jalapenos on 50 %. Two large orders of shrimp, and, put on ice a lot of beer....I took the workers car keys away from them, and had a party....usually on a Sat. afternoon...some of the customers always seemed to join us....so did the waitresses that got off duty...Seem that the original sites Restaurants are alway the best...the chains stores start out that way...but I think they change with the areas taste....??

Ivy Green said...

Coreen,
How do you feel about real fur? Today was the one day of the year when it was cold enough for fur in Alabama. I counted one full length mink and two short jackets in Publix today. lol

Coreen said...

Back to pizza...I may have said it before,
we have some of the best pizza right here in CT and though no one believes me, locally we
call the cheese schamotz, unique to this area...

Solar said...

Hahahah.!! pic please...

Solar said...

Ivy,

I will watch a little of it on my 65 inch for U....I don't watch hardly any sports events...but I do when it is about championships, or playoffs...

Coreen said...

Ivy, I do not wear real fur, many years ago
I did, but thankfully I do not any longer.

I have a couple of fake fur coats, which today, the technology allows the look & feel to be very close to the real thing. My favorite is my leopard coat (its several years old, soft, warm, & very light weight).

Should I ask, do you wear real fur...

Trust me, while I don't like the idea of real
fur, I am not a raging peta type....

Ivy Green said...

Full disclosure: I have a fur jacket, but I only wear it to walk the dogs when I really need to keep warm. lol

don1one said...

I remember seeing minks in a pet store once. My hands are rough enough I couldn't feel the fur when I'd pet them. They were really cute.

I've been against real fur since. Except maybe possum, they're mean little creatures.

Solar said...

Saw a women once with a real fur on, in a gas station, pumping her own gas...

opposed to self serve gas stations & know where the gas stations around here are that still pump gas....thankfully we still have a few....

Solar said...

Now U talkin...is Maria around...love twins....

don1one said...

You may be missing Solar. I give a pretty good massage. :^)

My favorite massage was on the beach in Maui. The hotel had a small building out where you could hear the surf.

Solar said...

What I miss most about belonging to a health club....is the swimming pool. and the steam baths.....

don1one said...

Hot tub or steam room and a cold dip pool. If you keep going back and forth your muscles will be limp in no time.

Carol said...

I've been wanting to get my masseur to come out and give me a massage in front of my windows overlooking the river. Unfortunately, he has a bum leg and I don't know if he could get up the steps.

Solar said...

I don't feel sore or anything, after the snow shoveling....I did feel my back a little.....If Gore had been elected president...how far along would we be now with stem cell.....pretty close to solving our back problems...they are the cure all....I think that Obama will start funding this again in a more substantial way??

Solar said...

That should be a good thread to talk about...most people really don't understand the stem cell debate...

don1one said...

They are starting to do some pretty interesting things with adult stem cells. And the good thing about that is that they can use your own cells so there's less chance of rejection.

Of course, the biggest problem with backs is lack of exercise and stretching. I learned a long time ago strong stomach muscles stop back aches.

They're not even recommending surgery for blown discs any more from what I hear.

don1one said...

Or as my doctor tells me when I whine, use it or lose it. She had no mercy.

Solar said...

Don,

Thats what I understand also...there are operations that one can have; but not really good % of them are susccesful....my point is that Bush did nothing to advance the study...the scientific community still believe that this is the answer to alomost every thing....

I do have a good strong stomhach (core) that I have to have in order to not feel the pain, that I would other-wise... every other day I do 4-5 hundred ab crunches, and 50 push ups...plus some others...some times I do have to rest my back...what I can't control too much is my Sciatica nerve...it drives my crazy sometimes....

Solar said...

"Or as my doctor tells me when I whine, use it or lose it. She had no mercy."

Same with Women Lawyers, Nurses, and pinks in Tejas.....

Ivy Green said...

Shaky start.

don1one said...

Don't know nothing about that Solar. Did something bad one time to that area with one of those hydraulic leg stretchers. But that's it and I just quit watching claude van damme movies.

Are you sure you're not irritating it with those crunches though? And do you stretch?

How would adult stem cells help you with that? It looks like it's usually inflammation causing a pinched nerve.

I always look for the male dental techs when I have my teeth cleaned. They're always more gentle.

Solar said...

I have degenerate disk disease, had it for 20-30 years. Used to get a cortisone shot every few months..but did not want them any longer.....
es I do a lot of stretching...isometrics, and the crunches do help....I don't lift anything but my shoulders off the ground...work out with a bowflex machine..(used to do free weights all of the time...they are different to work with-much harder) and run....I have to stop the running....trade the running machine in for a three way elliptical one...If I stay on top of my exercises...
I feel great, but I do listen to my body, and rest it when it tells me too....

don1one said...

That's too bad. So it's an autoimmune disease? I've had a few cortisone shots, but in the spine it has to be really painful.

Running doesn't sound real good if your bones are degenerating. Lots of impact. I like the elliptical or rowing machines for a good workout.

Solar said...

I stand a lot when Im at my comp, and type, one reason that I misspell so much, when You have a pinched nerve...you can't sit, for too long....its aggravating, but I can live with it...some people have it far, far worse....I guess that Coreen and the others are taking a break now, to watch the game.....so I will check in a little later...I can just see her, in her cat fur coat, gloves, and her NY jets skull cap...HA.!

Ivy Green said...

What's that I hear?

Do you hear what I hear?

Carol said...

I'm kinda wanting to pull for Texas cuz they have had some bad luck. Poor little young QB.

Carol said...

Of course me pulling for anyone is usually a death sentence for that team. At least that is how it has been lately.

Carol said...

Well it ended up being a good game anyway.

don1one said...

There was a game?
Who won?

Who played?

Coreen said...

Congratulations, Ivy....

And did you see what the 2 coaches earn...nice
paycheck for both of them....

jan said...

Ivy, congratulations. A really good game. Damn right - good paychecks. Wow!

jan said...

Ivy, I had my 2 sons, DIL's and 4 grandchildren here for dinner and the game. It was a great night, even if TX lost.

jan said...

Carol, that poor little young QB did pretty good for a freshman.

jan said...

My kids were all laughing at me about my texting. I make a lot of mistakes and send strange messages. Oh Well, I am still learning, but they all gave me a virtual "pat on the back."

Ivy Green said...

"The victory makes Tide coach Nick Saban the first coach to win BCS titles at two schools - Alabama and LSU."

Win or lose, paycheck or no paycheck, Saban never cracks a smile. Most happy for Mark Ingram. Garrett Gibert did an amazing job in the clinch for Texas.

jan said...

Coreen, thank you for a great post. I love the pics of both teams, cheerleaders & mascots. You are great! I have not been much of a football fan in my lifetime, but while in TX I went to most of the home games. I had a good friend who loved football so she dragged me to all the home games. She would take her flask of something alcohol and get a big cup of ice. She was a bunch of fun when she drank.

jan said...

Ivy, I loved it when they showed Ingram's mother. A proud mama. At the end of the game, I said something about Saban's shirt being a pretty shade of pink and John said someone poured pink gator aide on him and he was not to happy about it. I guess John took his "no smiling" for not being too happy.

Ivy Green said...

"We lost. They won. They were doing something right."

~ Sergio Kindle, Linebacker, Texas

...uh, say, what was the question again?

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Saban was ticked about the Gatorade. They sneaked up on him way early; they didn't want to miss their chance this time 'cuz he usually foils them.

Ivy Green said...

Yes, thanks, Coreen, for a great thread with wonderful photos. Roll Tide. 'Nite y'all.

Ivy Green said...

P.S. It surprised me Saban didn't have a back-up shirt on the sidelines. lol

jan said...

Amie (the pregnant one) was here tonight. She is doing fine. We all placed bets as to when she is going to "pop."

Ivy Green said...

Came up from the Man Cave to discover it's noisy up here with a lot of whooping and hollering, and the occasional firecracker going off. Not sure what time they (i.e., we) will be able to settle down for sleep.

jan said...

"Jan, Im also praying for you, and yours...I do pray...but not like what religious people pray....my prayers come in the form of extending my thoughts of positiveness....and knowing that the natural process of healing can be passed from one brain to another...that is wishing for me..so I will send my best wishes by telepathy....:-)"

Solar, I am behind on reading comments and went back to the daffodil post and read this from you. You are a sweetheart. Thank you.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Did you sneak a BP cuff on her while she wasn't looking? lol

jan said...

Ivy, I am LOL. No. I am giving her some space. I did not mention her BP. My biggest concern was that she was alone at night. Her husb is at home now - until Mon. Then I will start worrying again, but I probably won't let her know. Her next prenatal appt is Mon so guess what I am hoping for???
Good night.

Ivy Green said...

Good job, Jan. That "letting go" business is the hardest work of all.

All quiet on the western front. lol

Anonymous said...

Carol, It's 24 here this morning, and we're surviving, managing to keep thing fairly comfortable.

I can't even imagine what the horses and small animals are going through though. That's the main thing about this cold weather that I hate.

Anonymous said...

We're going to try the big generator we bought a while back (but never wired or had propane delivered to the tank for it) going today, just in case there's a power outage in the next few days of cold. The only thing is that the propane company may be too busy to deliver.

Another one of those things we put off, and now when we might need it, it's not ready to go.

Carol said...

"Carol, that poor little young QB did pretty good for a freshman."

I totally agree Jan and since I really didn't have a horse in that race, I started pulling for him. We got to watch his learning curve and if there had been just one more quarter, it might have been a different story. He earned some valuable experience last night. It was a fun game to watch.

Carol said...

Morning Chloe, Can you hook up smaller bottles of propane to it?

I didn't leave any water running out here. I have the pipes wrapped up well, the heat up high and thought that it wasn't going to be that bad yet. My water in the kitchen was almost totally frozen. Had a itty bitty trickle left. I let that run and it finally came back. Well I guess I can kiss the pipes at my other place good bye before it is over.

Carol said...

One problem is that I used my other place to wash clothes and tomorrow is wash day.

Carol said...

Are you afraid you will lose power or are you going to use it to warm the barn Chloe? The TV here said that our power company said "not to worry, they have it covered"

Carol said...

Chloe, for days I've been worried about the birds and squirrels and other critters outside. I've been pouring the food to the birds and squirrels and they have been eating it up at a rapid pace. I think they knew what was coming.

Anonymous said...

We can't warm the barn Carol. It's too open, and is more stalls than a barn.

I'm always afraid we'll lose power, because it's not unusual out here. We have a small electric generator, but it will only run a few things, like the small heaters. A lot of good they'd do, it's going to be colder tonight.

Our pipes were fine this morning, we had a water drip going with warm water, so no problem whatsoever. It'll probably be frozen out at the barn though.

When are you going to check your house? I wonder how our pal Tony is doing? He's probably even less ready for cold weather than we are. Maybe he'll check in and let us know.

Carol said...

I don't think anyone could be less ready for cold weather than I am Chloe.

I just looked Tony's area up on Accuweather and there's not going to be any serious freezes there.

Carol said...

It's 44 there now.

Anonymous said...

"I think they knew what was coming."

I have no doubt they knew it was coming. It's instinct.

Carol said...

I wonder how river rat Joey, who lives in a houseboat down the river, is doing right now. I hope he has one of those wood burning heaters in his houseboat or found somewhere to stay.

The strong north wind last night blew the river down quite a bit. The neighbors pontoon boat is sitting on mud right now.

I need to take Maggie out but haven't mustard up the courage yet. She needs one of those coats that she doesn't have to put her legs thru holes. The one that Ivy talked about and that Sean has his dogs in. I bet they are all sold out at the pet store.

Coreen said...

Good morning,

Glad to see you both got through your cold night with little damage. Looks like you have
to endure 1 or 2 more nights of the bitter cold though.

Are you temps. going to be below 25-30 the
entire weekend?

Our snow is again the nuisance amount, 1-2",
which causes slipping & sliding when driving til it is cleared. It is still snowing lightly probably for another hour or so before
it stops. Have not ventured outside yet.

Carol said...

I have this little place that has insulation stuffed in it up under the camp. I noticed yesterday that something hollowed out a nice round hole in it. Something small was preparing a shelter for the cold.

Carol said...

Coreen, the next three nights are going to be worse than last night.

Anonymous said...

These are our temperatures for the next few days - the first one is today:
High: 35° Low: 19°
High: 43° Low: 22°
High: 46° Low: 25°
High: 54° Low: 37°
High: 57° Low: 41°

Carols is probably very similar. Our cold fronts always come in four day increments. This one started yesterday, and by Monday should be about over.

Coreen said...

Carol, could your river get ice on it? And never asked is the river fresh water or brackish?

Anonymous said...

Carol, Sun all weekend, so that I'm looking forward to.

Coreen, That snow is so beautiful, but it sure does cause a lot of work. That's the worst part of winter here - we have to work so much harder in the winter, just trying to keep everyone warm and well fed.

Unfortunately, the best fed of all is me!

Coreen said...

It is so interesting, yesterday, the temp reached about 38 here, the sun was out & everyone was saying how it felt 'warm', after those 20's & below for over a week straight.

The cold blast that is affecting you guys, is
going to give us another deep freeze blast the rest of the weekend as well, with wind, which
makes it really awful.

Coreen said...

Chloe,

The snow is pretty at first, but once the roads are treated, the the snowpiles left are
brown, sandy, dirty. You wind up dragging sand into your garage, house, into stores, etc, from the sand/salt in the parking areas.

No easy way to clean up mother nature's treat.

Carol said...

Today 39 19

Carol said...

With my new little AC/heater working it's little heart out, the temp in my, used to be toasty, bedroom is 57. It's 27 outside right now. Now how cold will it be when it gets 18 outside???

Anonymous said...

That's why the cold is so hard on us Carol. We're just not prepared for it. Why don't you break down and get yourself an electric blanket. I got one this year, and I don't have to use it 'that' much, but it really makes the winter easier. You and Maggie would be nice and toasty.

I only put mine on when I go to bed for an hour, then usually turn it off right before I go to sleep. It's just nice, being able to get warm whenever I need it badly.

don1one said...

Morning all. Good luck Carol.

They told us to expect up to an inch of snow and we didn't get a flake. 40 when I woke up, which will be the high of the day and we'll be going down into the mid 30s the rest of the weekend.

I didn't even think of my own pipes. I've got old galvanized pipe I really need to replace. I'm not going under now though unless I have to. :^)

I can run the drier and heat under the house if it gets too bad.

Actually, we've been wondering if I'd even fit through the gap. And I'm not that big.

Anonymous said...

Once the sun is out tomorrow, it will warm up our houses (and cars) real well.

Glad that you took the day off, so you and Maggie can get through this together.

Carol said...

Chloe, I have an electric blanket. I don't need it with my longjohns, warm ups on, under a down comforter, and about 4 more blankets on top. It's just getting out from under it that is the problem.

Carol said...

Oh, and I have a little Maggie warmer under those covers.

Solar said...

Man, I sweating my ass off with all of those blankets Carol, and the Long johns (pic please) and all the other stuff that you have on.!!

Since last week when it was -15 not that big a problem here....snow either..so far other places in Il have had it a lot worse, and in Indiana..a friend is going to send me a pic, that shows how bad he had it..

"Unfortunately, the best fed of all is me!"

Carol said...

Chloe, I keep thinking about the cell phone/brain tumor association. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that particular research but it seems that cell phones have been used long enough now that they could tabulate the incidence of brain tumors in those who are frequent users of them. Has the incidence increased?

I tried but couldn't find the research study article. I found the journal but it doesn't list the Jan issue.

It did mention that "some of the "higher quality studies did show an associated risk."
That goes along with studies that have found increased risk of cancer in those exposed to other electromagnetic fields. Why I don't like even sleeping under an electric blanket.
I've even worried about carrying those things in my pocket all the time.

I'm not a fanatic but try to limit my carcinogenic exposure to those things that I enjoy the most.

I've had to spend a considerable amount of time on cell phones since becoming an NP, pretty much had one attached to my ear, and it has worried me, especially cuz I used those old, huge battery ones for a long time.

Carol said...

This cold weather does make me want to eat all the time. I even made myself a gold brick sunday last night, well the closest I could come up with one. Some Blue Bell homemade vanilla ice cream topped with some of that chocolate you melt for candy and toasted pecans. It hardened on top. I limited myself to only one but I wanted more. I usually don't eat much ice cream but....

don1one said...

I've heard that cell phones don't cause tumors, just prevent the brain from healing.

I've used a cell phone from almost the beginning, and have a meningioma, which might be connected. Since most of them are benign a lot of people could have one and not know. I didn't find out until they did an mri for something else.

Carol, I think the biggest discovery for those living around high power lines is a change in melatonin. I'm betting the old style tv tubes are a lot more dangerous than an electric blanket.

Carol said...

Don, just read on emedicine, a site I use often as a reference, that " autopsy studies reveal that 2.3% of individuals have undiagnosed asymptomatic meningiomas." You might find that comforting.

don1one said...

I was diagnosed two years ago and never had the follow-up mri to see if it's growing. I'm not too worried.

But I bet that rate goes up with modern electronics. Everything is radiating any more.

I'm probably more concerned with chemicals than I am radiation though. That chemical used to soften plastic in everything from saran wrap to baby bottles to adult toys is pretty nasty. There are a lot more.

Solar said...

What helps me with the cold; is that I get used to it right away: when it starts to get a little colder then normal; around thanks giving, i start to think about the cold..

this comes from doing construction, I start getting my equipment, and trks ready for it...then my mental attituce toward it kicks in...I just roll with it....I don't turn up the heat when it gets to be around 58-60 degrees, I get used to it...then when the cold weather comes around, im used to it by then, little by little. I leave the heat on 62-64 during the day, and 58 during the night...I shut off all vents to rooms that are not being used, and at night the vents in all rooms..cept the bathrooms for the pipes, and shut all doors to rooms... it snowed about another 4 inches last night...out for my snow cardio routine.....if I work up a good sweat....a nice cold bottle of Budweiser....thats the prize.!!

don1one said...

I had one of my bosses (I have three contracts) stuck up in O'Hare last night. Luckily he got out last night.

Winter meant unemployment for my dad in Colorado. Luckily mixers never get stuck in snow though, so if they could mix it so the mud wouldn't freeze they'd be going in any weather. :)

And Carol, sounds good to me that the collective 'we/us' are the new, workout, spiritual & younger friends to each of us....

TROUBLE

jan said...

"One problem is that I used my other place to wash clothes and tomorrow is wash day."

Carol, I am not happy with my new front loader machine - it is supposed to save water but I don't feel anything I wash is rinsed well enough- and I use the right soap and minimally. I can still feel the soap residue on stuff. The problem may be our pipes - I need to call a plumber. We may have mineral build-up on pipes.

Anyway, I go to the laundramat a lot lately. It does not take long and get everything done at once.

jan said...

I like that 8 friends deal. I am counting how many I can count on here.

Carol said...

I wonder if the laundramat covered their pipes. I do have a large cup of quarters I've been saving up. Do they still take quarters or do I need $5 bills now?

Carol, ours uses quarters.

Coreen, loved the link to Elvis. I was not a fan when I was young. My dad would not let us watch him on TV - do you sense a little control there? Later in life I loved Elvis' music. I have visited Graceland in Memphis. It is really a pretty regular house for a most irregular man. I too think about him on Jan. 8. His death, for me, was right up there with JFK's assasination. I remember where I was when I heard he died. My priorities are straight!!

jan said...

Carol, so sorry you are cold. We are about the same temps but dry cold is not as bad as humid cold. John says I freeze his ..... off (substitute your own word). I like the temp in house about 68 F and he likes it about 72-73. We both are constantly adjusting it. I bet he is not going to be happy when I retire.

Carol said...

Jan I am pretty comfortable now when the temps in the camp is around 60. I've gotten used to it but I wear more clothes.

I've had 11 calls from the jail so far today. That's how I spend my vacation days. I don't know why I count them as a vacation day.

Iphony has been really helpful for my work. I have my drug references on it and I can put a call on speaker and look up what I need to look up, do any calculation I need to do and talk, all at the same time. That's especially nice when I'm shopping at Walmart and they call from the jail. I never make it thru a trip to Walmart without a couple of calls. I try to sound pleasant when I answer but sometimes I want to say...leave me alone!

You can even talk on Iphony at the same time you surf the web. I found that out when I heard a commercial on TV about it.

Carol said...

And Jan, it is pretty dry here right now. I have chapstick on my grocery list. I need the industrial size for my entire body. I wonder if I can get it in the size you can put in a caulking gun?

I have to head out now to do my chores. I don't want to but I have to.

Woo-hoo! Tampa here I come. Tony, ya around?

I was out on my walk today and it was 27 degrees with the wind chill. Saw a guy come out of his house dressed in just shoes and boxer shorts to get his mail. I don't think he realized how cold the wind was. I joked about him making me feel cold and he just glared at me. :^)

jan said...

Carol, you should be able to get some respite from your work at least on weekends and your days off. Do they consider you on call all the time?

Solar said...

Don,

I saw where you said that your dad drove a mixer....a concrete trk right?

Oh and about the cold that you have been haveing...I told you not to make fun of me....ask Tony about that...I sent some pretty cold stuff last year to him...

Im already thinking ahead....going to look for that ground hog, and tell him; that his goose is cooked if he gives us more winter then we want this year...

don1one said...

Solar,
Yeah, 8 and 10 yard mixers, then a pumper before he retired. It was fun to go out with him.

We were supposed to get snow last night, but no such luck. At least it was sunny today.

Even in Tampa it's 50s and 60s.

Carol, do you really have to work or do you have a monkey on your back? Sounds like you do a lot of prescribing, was just wondering.

Carol said...

Well Don, at first I thought you might be suggesting I hire a monkey to help me out. Do you know any that I can get for cheap?

It's like this, they don't stop arresting people when I leave for the day. The nurses are there for 12 hours and they are LPNs. That is a very technical nurse that just follows orders. Someone has to give them. The people who are being arrested seem to be sicker and sicker. I have people with transplants, those who need dialysis three times a week, those who have been patched up after being mauled by a police dog and those with gun shot wounds. The hospitals don't like to keep criminal around for long so I get them looking pretty rough.

Many of our inmates have a list of medical problems as long as your arm. Some bring their meds, some do not and don't even know what they are. We have a significant number with diabetes on insulin. I can't continue their home insulin doses because their diet at the jail is different than their diet at home and giving that dose could kill them. I start from scratch there.

Fighting is a frequent occurance in jail, so they end up with broken bones or maybe they fell out of their bunk. Most are withdrawing from multiple drugs and a significant number are, out of control, psychotic and that is why they end up in jail.

I didn't agree, as a condition of taking this job, to even be on call but what can I do, come home, put my feet up and tell them good luck? My nurses wouldn't stand for that. They would need buses to carry them all to the hospital.

I haven't even had a week off in the almost five years I've been there for the same reason. I work for a local charity hospital and am considered a off site clinic. There is no one at that hospital who has nothing to do and can take my place when I am off. When they close a clinic in the hospital there are always other clinic or the ER for the patient to go to. They can't haul everyone of my inmates who need care into the hospital. They would need buses and a team of deputies.

I guess I could say, to hell with it but that's not me. I'm up to 16 calls today and it really hasn't been a bad day. The last call was about a woman who came in vomiting, severe headache, really high blood pressure, pulse rate of 130, just to mention a few of her problems. I got all the data re her health history and then told the nurse what to do for her. Then I pray. Prayer has really worked for me.

I have tried whinning to administration there but they just ignore me. They tell me, just don't answer the phone but they don't have a license to protect and most could really care less. Of course, they wouldn't hesitate to point at me if anything went wrong.

Don,

Just got back from having some fun with Max, over at tm...hes been talking-pushing war with Yemen, and I just had to rile him up...

I drove a mixer for 14 years, and trained drivers for them...Not one accident, late about 4-5 times for work, and missed 4-5 day's of work, in 14 years...they are fun to drive..but did contribute to my bad back problems...then using my head, to break up concrete dives did not help...

Solar said...

dives= drives, as in driveways....but i did hit some dives pretty good HA.!

don1one said...

Max is one of those guys that sits in an apartment in New York and reads things, but has never actually gone out and lived them. I feel kind of sorry for him. CBob says the same thing a lot, only different.

Lifting those heavy chutes kept him in shape. Probably what's wrong with your back. That's a pretty good record.

He'd come home and tell us about backing the mixer up those little mountain roads in Colorado. Sometimes I miss working construction, but I'm a lot warmer now. :^) There's just not the same satisfaction at the end of the day though.

I was hoping you might be doing a lead post to start a conversation on stem cells Solar (I saw that you mentioned it yesterday. I'd do it, but I'm not sure where to start, because I haven't kept up with it that much (I've been too busy eating :).

Like you said, most people don't understand what's going on with it. I think you were talking about the stem cell debate, if I remember correctly. Is that what you had in mind.

Solar said...

Hi,

Chlo, Yes that's it..i was just thinking out loud -is all....how you doing with the cold..Carol seems like she is going to be ok..

Solar said...

"(I've been too busy eating :)."

Lookd like all you southern gals have that in common.....no matter Sally, I will always think about you, as the small one....

Anonymous said...

.... that's because I'm only 5 ft. 3 Solar.

I'm complaining about the cold a lot, and today's high here was around 28 (unheard of), but everything is going well. No problems

If you don't mind, I just looked up something on stem cells that I'll quote and post. I'm hoping I can pick you guys brains a little.

Sorry Carol, I missed your reply.

A monkey on the back is a management term. It's a person everyone is used to going to to do things for them. For instance, if there were another np ( i think that's what you said you were) after you went home but that person calls you anyway rather than going to the trouble of looking it up themselves. Sometimes people collect monkeys on their back because they like helping out or to help a new person, but then the monkey never goes away, it just keeps getting bigger.

It sounds like the alternative to calling you is shipping people to the hospital, so that wouldn't be the equivalent.

Of course management is never going to change things as long as you keep taking calls, so it's a catch 22.

Don,

I used to like Max, for his Moxie, until he just kept rooting for more and more wars...now I do think that he is ok...but I don't feel sorry for him...until he proven wrong, again, and again...but that still doesn't shame him, or make him tone it down....so I jab him when he gets to be too much...

I used to put the concrete chutes behind my back and weight lift them to stay in shape...actually that was the easiest job that I ever had....tell you how I got later...is you dad still alive...and you we have more things in common..construction....

I closed the Sports Bar to new customers, and opened the Science Lab. But feel free to stay here 'til closing (200 posts) :)

Solar said...

Chloe; Go ahead, that should get some conversation going,,like we need an excuse...I have been talking way too much, Maria, not even a little...

Carol said...

Yes, I know Don. I have a career long habit of getting myself in these situations then when I'm whipped, it's too late to change it

I would have had to do something a long time ago instead of letting this go on. Now it would take my collapse or quitting to change it. It has in most of the other jobs I've had.

This is one of those lessons I keep flunking. I think it is kind of one of those women things and also a nurse things. We want people to think we can do it all. No man would have ever put up with this. And when we are willing to be a martyrs, no one thinks the better of us. They actually think we are idiots.

I already did it Solar. It's posted.

Oh, I just feel sorry for anyone going through life as a spectator, not a participant. Like the way i play sports, I don't watch them. I really couldn't tell you the two schools in the game last night. Just the states.

I was an electrician for 8 years in the Air Force. And of course what ever else needed doing. Back kept giving me trouble and cramped half way up a pole. I didn't know about the connection between back trouble and stomach muscles back then. Haven't had any trouble since though.

Dad passed away in the 90s, but was well into his 80s when he did. He was an older man and all his friends were gone, I think he was just ready to go.
