When Daffodils Once Appeared

On this date last year, the first glimmer of spring appeared in my yard. What a difference a year makes!
Now the same spot in view of my kitchen window remains frozen and bare. My little daffodil must have learned her lesson to stay under her warm blankie a while longer.

"When daffodils begin to peer,
With heigh! the doxy over the dale,
Why then comes in the sweet o' the year,
For the red blood reigns in the winter's pale."
~ Wm. Shakespeare, Winter's Tale

Great flowers and poems Ivy. It's always nice to see something growing this time of the year (even if it's in a picture :).

looks like some nice threads, will go and catch up...don't know how long the internet will stay up...it is snowing pretty hard today, and looks like around 11-12 inches before it's all done with; so will be in and out.!

Cell Phone Radiation Might Improve Memory
livescience.com – 2 hrs 47 mins ago
Amid ongoing claims that long-term cell phone radiation may lead to brain tumors comes a new study suggesting the radio waves may protect and even reverse Alzheimer's disease, at least in mice.

And the radiation gave mice without Alzheimer's a boost in brain activity.

"It surprised us to find that cell phone exposure, begun in early adulthood, protects the memory of mice otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's symptoms," Gary Arendash, lead author of the study and researcher at Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, said in a statement.

The researchers showed that exposing old Alzheimer's mice to the electromagnetic waves generated by cell phones erased brain deposits of beta-amyloid, a protein strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease. Clumps of beta-amyloid form so-called brain plaques that are a hallmark of the disease. The scientists speculate the cell phone radiation increases brain temperature, causing brain cells to release the nasty plaques.

The current study found no evidence of abnormal growth in brains of the Alzheimer's mice after many months of exposure to cell phone-level electromagnetic waves. The results are published in the Jan. 6 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. " lhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20100106/sc_livescience/cellphoneradiationmightimprovememory

Hi Solar. Nice to hear you're 'protecting' your brain with your cell phone. They say it may be because it 'heats' the brain a little.

Anonymous said...

Can you cover it Ivy?

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
I'm going to leave the planting bed be. Even daffodils have to learn from the school of hard knocks. They have a pretty good cover of pine straw mulch over them. I've had daffodils survive being totally blanketed by snow.

Im all caught up now, and have to say that the last cpl of day's threads were very, very, interesting....

'Bout time you got back Solar. We were headed back to grandchildren and quilts.

Nephew in Omaha said something about 24" of snow. We might get some tonight. I have a whisky barrel pond and I just knocked 5" of ice off the top so the critters can get water. The squirrels were scrambling all over the top trying to get a drink.

In Ft. Lauderdale it's raining iguanas. I guess under 40 they become immobile and lose their grip.

Anonymous said...

Wow Solar, You sure didn't stay long. Hope you're coming back. Don needs you here.

I think we're all going to lose our grip if this keeps up Don.

Anonymous said...

... Don, I guess you know I was talking about the cold weather in that post.

Solar, I'm sure you already know this, but I learned a couple of things from the article, since I know basically nothing about time travel:
"You Can't Travel Back in Time, Scientists Say
"The urge to hug a departed loved one again or prevent atrocities are among the compelling reasons that keep the notion of time travel alive in the minds of many.

Space-time, Liu explains, can be thought of as a piece of spandex with four dimensions. “When something that has mass—you and I, an object, a planet, or any star—sits in that piece of four-dimensional spandex, it causes it to create a dimple,” he said. “That dimple is a manifestation of space-time bending to accommodate this mass.”

The bending of space-time causes objects to move on a curved path and that curvature of space is what we know as gravity.

Mathematically one can go backwards or forwards in the three spatial dimensions. But time doesn’t share this multi-directional freedom.

While the idea makes for great fiction, some scientists now say traveling to the past is impossible." http://www.livescience.com/technology/070307_time_travel.html

... and did you see Coreen's space pictures? Aren't they beautiful.

Chloe,

I was waiting for someone to show up, and left, but back again, and will stick around.

Don, The reason that I have been going every cpl of days now, is that my comcast service's satelite is operating this-a- way, it is working for 2-3 day's and off for the same...but I have liked what you have been saying,,cept the parts about giving me the needle......didn't the pinks tell you that-that is not permitted......im sensitive over here.!

don1one said...

I did Chloe. And I do enjoy chatting with you, but I'm waiting for Solar to come back too.

I lost the other grip years ago.

Carol was talking about relationships she's had, I've had 4 girlfriends later tell me they were on psychotropics. :^) I have the problem of thinking crazy people are more interesting to be around.

Carol, my answer is that we all have things to learn, and we are the result of our own free-will decisions. Which is why you have bad people in both good and bad economic and cultural environments. I just tend to think it only takes once. I don't really want to come back. Seen it, done it, don't even want the t-shirt.

I think once our personality is formed in this life, then we tend to start moving outside of time, which would be the real time travel. As in when God told Moses "I Am that I Am".

Solar said...

Chloe,

Very glad about you and the science articles that you have been posting.....remember a long time ago, we had a conventioneer about time....I made everyone at tm a little mad, for insisting that time is almost all of it, made up by us, it does not really exist....

Coreen,

Thanks for the exquisite pics of my neighborhood...cool huh? The pictures of the universe, are one of the most thought provoking things that I can think off....but also very daunting....there are a few sites that people can go and read about it...but not really understand, unless they have a good grasp of math....modern astrology is a lot like doing home work....lots of it....I can't, so I read and understand what I can, and also go, and try to understand other cosmic info....and following what Hubble is doing.....and so forth, and so forth...I don't think that there are too many people that can keep up with it all...there is always something new happening, every day...the super comps, are helping us understand it all,,,and we will never be able to do this...never....but that is just part of what our evolutionary needs are....we need to understand our surroundings, in order to survive....

There is so many things that I want to comment on, but I don't have the ability to keep them short like you all do.......

Jan, Im also praying for you, and yours...I do pray...but not like what religious people pray....my prayers come in the form of extending my thoughts of positiveness....and knowing that the natural process of healing can be passed from one brain to another...that is wishing for me..so I will send my best wishes by telepathy....:-))

Coreen said...

Good afternoon & where did you all go...

Ivy's harbinger of spring notwithstanding,
sorry to hear that you all are shivering.

Actually we are in the upper 30's & sunny, but
not for long, I suspect that some of Solar's
awful weather is approaching.

Solar said...

Don,

I agree about time travel...for right now...but will leave my mind open for the possability of it...I don't like it when some scientist say that something is not possible...can they see the future....well yes they can sorta...that means that they can time travel to the future sorta....

next month there is going to be another important report on space dust, for the distant past...

There are some scientist that are arguing about what was the very first chemicals that formed life....that is really cool...

I talk to people that don't believe in evolution, but support the right to live....about the process of the cells that lead to life....that is evolution..

Then sometimes politics gets in the way, and the war, and other things....not enough TIME-HA.! get it, get it???

Solar said...

That' it?

U are just going to keep blaming me for the weather......Coreen, when I get a group of pics like the ones that you posted about the Universe...I save them for a little while..and play them in my pic documents and a sliding show...great

And about your using those pills of your back, and for mobility.....DITTO.!! but you can feel a lot better when you exercise.....get to them, and keep them as habits....set a pattern to where you will feel guilty for not doing them....

My son Tom, was not into exercises until a few years ago: He came up to me, and wanted to know how to do them, and keep up with it...He now says that this is one of the greatest things that make him feel good about himself......It is mentally rewarding.....The thing is that I think, that you already get that pleasure from other things...but exerciser can only add to them....

don1one said...

I don't take vitamin supplements Coreen. I'm more an herbalist than a supplement person. I think God left a lot of cures in the plants and things around us (to include bacteria and fungus like mushrooms).

When Vitamin Shoppe was taking donations for sending vitamins overseas I asked a group doing mission work what they thought, and their response was "useless".

l-tryptophan and phosphatidylserine are the only non-herbal supplements I take, and both have good science behind them.

I like my teas though. Sasaffras for a spring tonic, Yogi bedtime tea, and a few others. Most of the rest is just eating healthy.

I wouldn't mind more regulation of supplements, but the FDA is clearly corrupt at times and might take away more of my favorites. But when I see things like the abuse of melatonin it worries me. 1 mg will knock me out, but they keep increasing dosages to the point only 1 mg is almost unavailable. And we have no idea what the long term affects of pig melatonin on people is.

The other important part is lifestyle. A meal eaten when you're relaxed will create less fat than when you're tense. The French tradition of long, slow meals with friends and family is a very healthy idea.

the very first page that I opened up of the book that my son Tom gave, me...Dk history was information and a beautiful pic of the ancient standing stones at Callanish, Scotland, where 20 stone circles jut out from the bare, peaty landscape...the seem to have been to mark lunar events that happened only once every 19 years....those early astronomers must have preempt persist ant.!

Just some monkey's trying to keep warm Solar. When I saw your dog, I decided to put an animal on mine too.

If I had to guess, the fourth one is thinking 'Why do I have to be on the outside, I'm freezin' my butt off!'

I have been taken a daily vitamin, since I was 20. Read where it would not hurt if you ate right. I think that one of the most important things that you can do,,is antioxidants.....

Solar said...

Chloe,

U can say that again, Im getting a little lazy about going out and shoveling the driveway....wish that Coreen was here to help me, not do it......

don1one said...

True Solar, but you don't want to overdue antioxidants.

Blueberries, wine, and dark chocolate are great sources of natural anti-oxidants.

There's just no evidence that taking most vitamins in pill form help very much. Vegans are probably the only ones required to take B vitamin supplements. There's one B vitamin that only occurs in meat and dairy.

A and D supplements can actually make you sick if you take too much in supplement form, but won't in natural form.

don1one said...

How deep is it getting there Solar?

Solar said...

Don,

It looks like we are going to get about a ft.....with the wind working against me...about 18" Im deciding weather to go out twice, or do it the hard way, and go out once.....this will be my exercise program for the day....over doing exercise is no good either....every thing should be in moderation..even the antioxidants, and all...I agree with your approach to them tho...

Coreen said...

I do not envy what you are dealing with today,
Solar....My driveway was plowed 5 days in a row, over new years, & I still had to do some
shoveling to clean up....

Be careful out there....

I take my vitties every day...as far as I'm
concerned that can only help, not hurt....

And as far as Chris Dodd, be assured, he will
turn up somewhere, & will be getting well paid
for whatever he winds up doing....cynical but
accurate....

Solar said...

Carol,

I can't agree with you any stronger about Lance Armstrong....his physical conditioning helped him tremendously....not to mention that when people do this....they are also feeding positiveness into the emotional state of mind...feed the mind also can be physical....

I was a pretty heavy drinker...and my liver and all...are in very good shape......I have always done strengthener exercises, sports, etc, that helped me drink a lot of water, and keep oxidizing...I always went where the conversations were good, so that took care of some of the brain food...but now with the internet....its all different....what a world of knowledge out there..... we will never know it all, but will try too....

Solar said...

strengthener = strenuous, have no idea how that came out...must be the three way conversation in my head...that comes out ...sometimes Spanish, sometimes English....and most times Spanglish....I find my self thinking the same thing twice..once in english, and once in Spanish......then writing it down.....talk about redundancy haha

Solar said...

Well,

I just called my self lazy, and a mental kick in the rear.....so will put on my polar bear club uniform and go and shovel the snow...later.!

Don, I'd recommend you have your thyroid checked.

I wore my Polaredge's to work today and I wasn't impressed. I'm getting ready for the Big Chill. I told them I was taking off tomorrow to protect my three p's. Pet, pipes, plants. And the my two M's. Maggie and me. Temp is starting to drop fast and the wind is really gusting out there.

Be safe Carol. They build for cold up north, not where you are. They're already sanding in NC because they don't have enough equipment to do it when the storm hits. Wish I could stop by and help.

We had a heat wave today. 45 and sunny. Snow clouds starting coming in this evening. Seemed off, I haven't seen them in years.

What were the problems you had before you discovered you had hyperthyroid?

Carol said...

Don, first symptoms was rapid heart rate. It occasionally got up to 300/minute. Hands shake, weight loss, hot flashes. I could lose 10 lbs in a week, even eating like a pig. I did put it back on again even though I was always thin.

My symptoms got better and worse. Stress always made it worse. The last symptom was loss of strength in large muscles which is not something I associated with the disease. That I really noticed the last time I tried to ski. That's when I asked my Gyn to check my thyroid. Bingo.

I took a beta blocker for many years for what was incorrectly diagnosed as a arrhythmia. That medication did help with the heart rate and the shaking. Thinking I had that arrhythmia problem kept me from thinking hyperthyroidism.
