Want to Know?

All of us here at the Swamp share at least one important thing and that is, we deeply care about our world, the one we live in and the one beyond. We want the one we live in to be better. We have created a nice little retreat here at the Swamp where we can come together to share our interests and concerns. We discuss depressing things but we try to balance that by exploring the really beautiful things that life has to offer.

What we all realize here is that we can't trust the MSM to inform us. They only tell us what they think we need to know and as has been humorously pointed out by the comedy news programs, they use much of the same talking points to drill certain information into our heads. Even people who only catch a few minutes of the news a week seem to have gotten those points. It really is a form of brainwashing and it is quite effective.

Our only salvation is that we have the Internet, at least for now, to help us learn things that we all need to know. With our busy lives, we only have a certain amount of time each day to search for important stories that we really need to know. I depend on you guys to help keep me informed. I learn new things every day when I visit the Swamp.

For a while now, I have wondered why we don't see any real investigative reporting anymore. It still exists but most of those stories don't make it into the MSM news. If we want to find those stories we will have to work a little harder to find them and then share them ourselves. My older sister sent me a link to a website that I think we all need to explore. I've added it to my bookmarks and you might want to also.

Here is a place to voice your opinion about the recent Supreme Court decision to give these powerful entities the same rights as us lowly individual people. If we don't insist that something is done about this scary decision, we don't stand the of the chance of a snowflake in hell of having any of our needs addressed. We also need to support the politicians who take this problem seriously. Without our support they don't have a chance either.

And even though I was skeptical about Obama, and still am, I've liked some of what I have seen and heard this week. I'm still a little worried that it is just rhetoric and we won't see any real action. It's up to us to give him a little atta boy this week. So here's my

Now we're watching for some action.

Carol,

Here is a program from one of those channels that I told U about: 9400- 9420,

That link one is very interesting in the way that U found out...it shows how the rest of the world is reporting the news..I find it very informative...don't believe all of it..but it seem genuine to me...today they have songs from around the world..

I see that a cpl of channels have been added, a Pentagon channel, that should be very interesting, also a nasa chanel, and a cpl of others...the university channels are the ones that I used to watch a lot...today at 1 pm my time, they will also air a talk with former cia operative Baer, about Iran...that is also interesting....I don't have these channels working on my satellite right now....but will look for interesting shows...

Also show of gardening, and soil, and plant genetics...take a peek at the listings, there is always something.....

New poll finds that when asked about party affiliation that people identify themselves as:

Democrat 32%
Independent 42%
Republican 26%

I don't know how this compares to the past but I think this is definitely a good sign. We need to get away from supporting the teams where only some on the team care about us and the rest just care about their pocketbook.

Carol said...

They also reported that the number of women who report themselves as Independent has not changed but the number of men has gone up. Maybe this is because women may be more likely to be loyal to their team even if they shouldn't??

"Terror comes at night in Afghanistan
By Anand Gopal

One quiet, wintry night last year in the eastern Afghan town of Khost, a young government employee named Ismatullah simply vanished. He had last been seen in the town's bazaar with a group of friends. Family members scoured Khost's dust-doused streets for days. Village elders contacted Taliban commanders in the area who were wont to kidnap government workers, but they had never heard of the young man. Even the governor got involved, ordering his police to round up nettlesome criminal gangs that sometimes preyed on young bazaar-goers for ransom.

But the hunt turned up nothing. Spring and summer came and went with no sign of Ismatullah. Then one day, long after the police and village elders had abandoned their search, a courier delivered a neat, handwritten note on Red Cross stationary to the family. In it, Ismatullah informed them that he was in Bagram, an

American prison more than 320 kilometers away. United States forces had picked him up while he was on his way home from the bazaar, the terse letter stated, and he didn't know when he would be freed."

A very good read:

Just one more thing before I take off. GOP, Jason Chaffetz-R, Utah, called out Obama yesterday on his transparency. He had very good points. He called Obama on the following broken promises:

Obama's failure to broadcast the health care debate on C-SPAN

He wasn't going to allow lobbiest in the senior most positions in his administration.

That he would go line by line in the health care bill.

That he would tackle earmarks and didn't want them in any bills.

Mr. Chaffetz made some very good points. He's also needs an Atta Boy.

Carol said...

Solar, similar but not as serious things like you mentioned, even though I can't get to your link, happen all the time across this country.

I had a guy come in the other day with a slew of health problems, some could be pretty serious. He looked like he'd been rode hard and put up wet. I always look at the rap sheet, if the inmate has no clue, to see how long he/she will be tied up in our joint. That gives me an indication on what I need to plan.

Unfortunately, most of my people I see have done nothing, and most likely will continue to do nothing to address their problems outside of the joint. But once I know about the inmate and his/her problems, I have a certain moral, legal and ethical responsibility to do something. It is one of the most pondered and worried over dilemmas I deal with. I also have a responsibility to be accountable to the taxpayors for the cost for what we do.

This guy's rap sheet listed telephone solicition for alcohol as his charge. He said he was soliciting for gas to get home to some east coast state. He was driving from California to his home. He looked a little more like he may not have even had a home.

His charge didn't seem like anything more than a misdemeaner but he had no one to call outside to get the ball rolling to get out. He was waiting on a court date because the jail couldn't just release him. He had already been in for several weeks. I'm sure if he got to court it would be time served.

It's not my job, I don't have the time, and I irritate many people, but I called around the jail to see if someone could get something moving for him. When that word gets out, my medical call goes up big time.

I started this guy on a treatment program to address most of his problems but he needed so much more. Part of the reason I pushed the envelope was selfish. I didn't want to deal with everything he suggested was plaguing him..cancer, severe coronary artery disease, just to mention a few. And I'm not a major medical center.

There are quite a few people, I bet, taking up space in jails here, even for simple things but they have no one to advocate for them. No one particularly looking for them. They may be in a place where no one knows where they are. You often can't call a cell phone from jail or they don't remember the number to the phone. No one to call for help. Your guy at least had that but it didn't do him any good.

Sorry, I'm procrastinating on getting out on this dreary day.

Off topic, but I wanted post this here, I told Fair that I would give her this info..Chloe, I know that you will like this, and Carol will probably know more about the areas of the brain that it talks about.

Fair,

I don't know if this is of interest to you. Im reading a book about emotions, and feelings, their evolution, and alway's wondered about this. Now it's explained. It seems that our brains are smarter than we think...they even fool us into thinking that we are not in Pain, or pleasure sometimes, in order to protect us. Every thing in life is either Joy or Sorrow, everything else falls in between.

There is an intimate and telling three-way connection between certain kinds of music, feeling of either great sorrow or great joy, and the body sensations we describe as "chills" or "shivers" or "thrills." For curious reasons, certain musical instruments, particularly the human voice, and certain musical compositions, evoke emotive stated that include a host of skin responses such as making the hair stand on end, producing shudders, and blanching the skin.

A study done by Anne Blood and Robert Zatorre: They wanted to study neural correlates of pleasurable states caused by listening to music capable of evoking chills and shivers down the spine. The investigations found those correlates in the somatosensing regions ( for me that area is what I sit on sometimes :-) of the insula and anterior (see, my anterior) cingulate, which were significantly engaged by musically thrilling pieces. M oreover, the investigators correlated the intensity of the activation with the reported thrill value of the pieces.

They demonstrated that the activations were related to the thrilling pieces (which individual participants handpicked) and not to the mere presence of music. Curiously, on other grounds, it is suspected that the appearance of chills is caused by the immediate availability of endogenous opioids in the brain regions modified by these feelings.

This is the second time that Im reading this book, maybe it will stick this time, hope it adds to your love of music.

Some more info, on Music, and feelings.

Intensely pleasurable responses to music correlate with activity in brain regions implicated in reward and emotion

* Blood, Anne J.,
* Zatorre, Robert J.

Abstract
We used positron emission tomography to study neural mechanisms underlying intensely pleasant emotional responses to music. Cerebral blood flow changes were measured in response to subject-selected music that elicited the highly pleasurable experience of “shivers-down-the-spine” or “chills.” Subjective reports of chills were accompanied by changes in heart rate, electromyogram, and respiration. As intensity of these chills increased, cerebral blood flow increases and decreases were observed in brain regions thought to be involved in reward/motivation, emotion, and arousal, including ventral striatum, midbrain, amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, and ventral medial prefrontal cortex. These brain structures are known to be active in response to other euphoria-inducing stimuli, such as food, sex, and drugs of abuse. This finding links music with biologically relevant, survival-related stimuli via their common recruitment of brain circuitry involved in pleasure and reward.

Every time I hear that Stars and Stripes Forever song and hear the piccalo, I think of a humorous story. My older sister played the flute and one day she came home from school with a piccalo. What's really sad is I believed her.

Something has been bothering me the last few days.

Obama won this election by talking. People liked the things he said and wanted to believe him. It didn't matter to them that he had never done anything in high office - they believed he would do what he said he'd do, as though he could work miracles. Then he took office, and everyone found out he's all talk and no action. That's what I've been reading for months.

So what happens now. He gives 'another' speech, then debates some republicans and people like him again because he 'talked'?. Now here we go again, everyone thinks he's changed. Since when do words mean more than actions?

I don't get it. What has changed, other than he talked some more the way he did during the election. It's as though this is the campaign again. All of a sudden everyone is right back to where we were at election time, thinking he's our savior.

Sometimes I feel like the most 'alone' person in the world. I just don't understand other peoples reasoning. I think people are so desperate to believe (hope), that they just 'need' to believe in something, anything.

Lying to ourselves sets us back, and cheerleading isn't going to do us a bit of good. This man has never done anything in his whole life that he didn't talk his way into or out of. He's all about manipulating people, and apparently he's the king of doing just that. Words, just words. Show me!

Mary, So happy to hear your family, including your grandbaby, is coming to visit. Please let

This page explains how to do links: Creating a hyperlink in the comments box

The third sentence down, where it says
'Just type': you copy that line from (this symbol over) <
and just paste in the information over the words, leaving all the symbols where the words are

If you show it to your son, he'll tell you how to use it, so you won't need to type all the stuff.

... see ya tomorrow.

The way you copy and paste your links works just fine for all of us. All we have to do is copy yours and paste it in our address bar. There's no reason what soever for you to mess around with that formula, unless it's just something you want to do. The way you're doing it now is just perfect.

I bet I can find the number.

I went out to eat with one of the nurses who used to work with us. She loved it at the jail but got too good an offer to pass it up. I was thinking about her today, wanting to call her to tell her about some of the crap that went down at work this week when the phone rang and it was her. Isn't that weird how you can think of someone and they call. We really don't talk very often so it was weird.

Carol said...

When Mary said I kicked her brains out she was referring to our time in the uterus together and it's only a rumor.

Carol said...

I totally agree with you Chloe about Obama. We'll just see if he can put his money where his mouth is. We're watching. I don't think too many are giving him a free pass anymore, not even his groupies. Many of them just thought Obama was going to free them from their responsibility of paying their credit cards bills and mortgages. Forgive them their sins. We knew that wasn't going to happen and I didn't want it to either. When someone does dumb things they need to be held accountable but that should also go for the bankers and Wallstreet.

Solar,

as always the devil's in the details....just what regulations will the financial institutions really accept in the end....

Solar said...

I know. They are way ahead of us..they already know what the deal is going to be....that's they way that they know how, and what to adjust imo...

Solar said...

On that quiz question, I almost said that we import 50%, but then I remembered that when Bush was being pushed to let out some of our oil reserves..they reported that we import 2/3rd's ..

Solar said...

It is very bright out today...feel like...golfing...I think that Im getting cabin fever.!!

Coreen said...

Of course, here are just a couple of examples how banks, soon to see the effects of the credit card regulations to start, are being ever more creative in collecting 'new fees'.

My bank here in CT is going to collect a new
fee for what they are calling 'excessive transfers'...that is, if you transfer $$ from your savings to your checking account more than
a set # of times in a month (currently more than 6 times) there will be a $15 fee for each
excessive transfer....

Also, a company that represents some private label credit card companies, is starting to charge $1 if you want a real copy of your monthly statement...don't be surprised if all
other credit cards & even utilities, etc, start charging you to actually get a paper copy of your bill to them each month....

And yes, here too, the sun is shining bright,
the sky is blue & we are having a heat wave...its 26 right now....

What still amazes me is that all this crazy gambling was going on with our money for as long as it was and no one was out there, with their hair on fire, exposing it. They were too busy trying to get in on it. And what's worse is that those idiots who we elect/pay to represent us made us pay them for losing our money. I'm still shaking my head about that. If there is a hell, I hope there's plenty of room.

Poor old Bernie M. was only one held accountable because he robbed the rich. You can do anything you want to the rest of us and get by with it but don't screw with the rich people or you're going to pay.

I put most of those Wallstreet guys, financial guys, bankers involved in this crisis in a category lower than Osama Bin Laden. He didn't wreck as many lives as they have. I just bet there have been many, many more lives lost from this financial crisis than were killed in 911.

Solar said...

Ditto, going to be hot here also..26 and im in my shorts....not.!

And no smart as weather reports from U Done.....

I have limited my biz with banks..they are just getting away with murder....I used to use a debit card, for a lot of my purchases at mtl yards, but now I try to do everything in cash...what i do have is the relationships with many suppliers like, plumbing, and electrical, stores, that helps-not to write too many checks..'

Tell you what I can't understand tho....like my son tom...there are a lot of people that pay a lot of money to use the cash stations that are everywhere.....I just can't see whey people us these stations....

Solar said...

Carol,

I feel so strongly like this....pisses me off everyday at some point knowing that.!!

This morning on cbs- they had on Pat Paulsen, and he was just lying through his teeth...that's the one thing that you need to be a successful politician...you have to be able to lye ..looking at people in the eye.....and knowing that they know that u r lying......i can't stand that......Im i lying????

Coreen said...

Solar, are you talking about atms. If so, probably convenience. I don't use them myself,
I usually either use the drive-up in my local bank branch or go inside, but it is a convenience to get real $$$, for many.

By the way, it's time for lunch here...

And money doesn't buy happiness even though we all think having a million would make us happier. We all wish we could win the lottery.

I had this guy come in this. He was getting ready to be withdrawing from narcotics and was distressed. He said he was ready to do it and was a little relieved to have to do it.

While he was in jail, one of his brothers was in prison. He had a sister and brother who died of drug overdoses. His 70 year old mother was addicted to narcotics that she bought off the street or got from him.

He was in his 40s and was living with his mom. He said he needed to move out because he would never get thru recovery living with his mom. He said his mom could afford to get some help to take care of her because she had won the lottery. She won one of the first lotteries in these parts in the 80s. She still had lots of money left.

I guess money didn't buy this family any happiness. It is not uncommon to hear this kind of story about people who win millions in the lottery. I know you are all saying, that wouldn't be me if I won the lottery. How do you know that?

Carol said...

Yes, it is also beautiful outside here and cold. I'm enjoying looking out the windows at it. That is one of the main reasons I can't leave the camp. I can feel like I'm outside when I'm inside.

I run out to feed the birds and run back in. I have so many birds out there right now that they are fighing over a space at the feeders. I got a crawfish tray, at least 12 inches in diameter, and duck taped it to one of the stair rails to give them more room to eat. The little birds are stuffed in that tray eating their seeds.

Jan, Glad to see you stopped by to say hi. I bet you really are busy with your grand daughter spending the weekend with you. I got a laugh out of your Foxworthy/yard sale joke. He's so funny. Keep in touch Jan! We miss you

Those BBC Bird pics are 'spectacular' Coreen. They almost didn't look real. I was looking out my window yesterday, amazed at the size of the flocks of birds going through here this year. We're not talking hundreds, but thousands. They just keep coming, and often land here and on the nearby properties to rest and chatter for a while. There's been a lot of building going on in our corner of the world, people keep taking down trees, so I think that's why we're seeing more here where we've kept most of ours (all, except the ones that have fallen).

Anonymous said...

... speaking of chattering, good to see you've been doing a little more of that this weekend Solar. It's been fun reading yours and everyone else's posts.

.. well, our little social network here isn't the only one that's communicating. We may be samll, but we're mighty.

Online social networks are changing the way people communicate, work and play, and mostly for the better......

"All this shows just how far online communities have come. Until the mid-1990s they were largely ghettos for geeks who hid behind online aliases. Thanks to easy-to-use interfaces and fine-grained privacy controls, social networks have been transformed into vast public spaces where millions of people now feel comfortable using their real identities online. ComScore, a market-research firm, reckons that last October big social-networking sites received over 800m visitors. “The social networks’ greatest achievement has been to bring humanity into a place that was once cold and technological,” says Charlene Li of the Altimeter Group, a consulting firm.

Their other great achievement has been to turn themselves into superb tools for mass communication. Simply by updating a personal page on Facebook or sending out a tweet, users can let their network of friends—and sometimes the world—know what is happening in their lives. Moreover, they can send out videos, pictures and lots of other content with just a few clicks of a mouse. “This represents a dramatic and permanent upgrade in people’s ability to communicate with one another,” says Marc Andreessen, a Silicon Valley veteran who has invested in Facebook, Twitter and Ning, an American firm that hosts almost 2m social networks for clients.

Social-networking sites’ impressive growth has attracted much attention because the sites have made people’s personal relationships more visible and quantifiable than ever before. They have also become important vehicles for news and channels of influence. ....." http://www.economist.com/specialreports/displayStory.cfm?story_id=15351002&source=hptextfeature

Carol said...

Interesting article Chloe. These big social networking sites could be used by the people to organize an effort to take back this country from the thieves who think they own it. Problem is no one but the thieves care enough to go to the trouble to use the Internet so it's just another good way for them to access us.

Here at the Swamp and places like TM, people share what they learn with each other and that makes a small difference for the people who do care.

"Why do people often vote against their own interests?"

“... it is striking that the people who most dislike the whole idea of healthcare reform - the ones who think it is socialist, godless, a step on the road to a police state - are often the ones it seems designed to help.”

“The Republicans have learnt how to stoke up resentment against the patronising liberal elite, all those do-gooders who assume they know what poor people ought to be thinking.”

"Right-wing politics has become a vehicle for channelling this popular anger against intellectual snobs. The result is that many of America's poorest citizens have a deep emotional attachment to a party that serves the interests of its richest.”

That has always amazed me. Many of the people who listen to and worship Rush are those who he laughs, all the way to his bank, at. Suckers.

I hope Pink's dress holds. I bet she didn't get it at Walmart.

Carol said...

Dang, that was a performance. Hope you guys were watching. If not, better catch it on Youtube.

Carol said...

I would even bet that Pink piece will send a tingle up your leg Solar.

Half time at the Pro Bowl, they are interviewing Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. Wow.

Carol said...

Coreen, that will send a tingle up your leg!

Coreen said...

Carol, thanks for the update, just turned it on & yes I do like your qb....and peyton, well

Carol said...

But he still has to lose.

Carol said...

I think I'm ready. Will have to meditate that day.

Coreen said...

Carol, This should be the Pink performance on youtube already.

Here's the link, didn't look at it yet.

Pink
performing at 2010 grammys

Coreen said...

And I heard the other day that Taylor Swift's
performance is supposed to be pretty special,
but I think it may be toward the end of the show.

Pink's been one of my favorites for years. Got to the motel too late to see it. She does lots of wire work in her concerts. I'll have to try and find it.

After I get to Tampa permanently I'm going to start taking long weekends around solar. Easy hops out of Miami. i had a timeshare in Cabo, but military standing in the streets with machine guns didn't do much for my confidence. I can do most of my work remote now, but I need more cash for property. A lot of those countries don't have mortgages. All cash and carry, just like you.

Carol said...

The video didn't come up Coreen. It may not until the show is over.

Coreen said...

Did you try the post I put up, when I tried it
it came up....

Carol said...

Oh, I have a good view of the Wolf moon, right out the window, tonight. OOOOWWWH!

Carol said...

It's up now. Everything but the video came up a few minutes ago.

Coreen said...

Carol, try this link it is already on youtube

Pink performing at the 2010 grammys

Coreen said...

I looked out too, the moon is huge, they may call it the wolf moon, but as Solar said,
its Cosmos moon....

Tonite my moon has a big halo around it, Friday night it did not & tonite I can not see
Mars near it.

Coreen said...

Wow that Pink performance was on youtube when I
linked it, I watched it & now it has already
been removed.....

Carol said...

It's still on your other link Coreen.

Carol said...

I bet Hubs will be sorry he missed that guitar playing.

Carol said...

If Solar caught that Pink performance, he may be too weak to speak.

Coreen said...

Somehow I don't think Solar could ever be speechless, but you never know...

Coreen said...

You do know that I have no clue what these songs are so far....and barely know whothe
performers are...

Coreen said...

Finally, someone I do know.....Stevie Nicks....

Carol said...

I love Stevie Nicks. Taylor sounds flat tonight.

Carol said...

She sounds so flat that it hurts my ears.

Carol said...

I saw someone else thought that Taylor sounded terrible also. I can't sing but I do have a good ear for music.

Carol said...

Taylor is getting stomped tonight on Google. It wasn't just me.

Coreen said...

I loved Lionel Richie's songs.....

Carol said...

The last performance was beautiful. Glad it cleared my ears.

Carol said...

No on those earrings.

Ivy Green said...

We're baccckk! Home to the Humidity...nothing like a breath of cold damp Southern air.

Coreen said...

Liking Bon Jovi's who says you can't go home...

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I have never heard a Taylor Swift performance that I thought was any good. I know I'm "old" but I have no idea why she has a following, let alone win awards.

Coreen said...

So far, I like Bon Jovi's performance the best...

Ivy Green said...

Hubs is watching in the Man Cave while I'm here, he made a special trip upstairs just to say "Taylor Swift sucks. She was so off key, it wasn't funny. Stevie Nicks was just being kind to her."

Maybe Kanye was onto something yanking the microphone away from her last time.

Carol said...

Just what I was saying Ivy! She may be sweet but she couldn't sing tonight.

Carol said...

And Bon Jovi still looks good. How old is he?

Coreen said...

Carol, Andrea Bocelli has a voice that can just about always give you that chill.....

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Were you talking about the Zac Brown Band's guitar playing? They were great...we saw them last year as the opening band for ZZ Top.

Leon Russell looked way cool. He just came back from brain surgery, I think I read in the paper during today's flight. I remember Bruce Hornsby talking about his great friend Leon who he named one of his twins after.

Ivy Green said...

They're singing Simon and Garfunkle. My favorites from way back.

Ivy Green said...

I'm betting Hubs will be glued to that Les Paul tribute. He has a bunch of those.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I ditto the "welcomes back." Even lurking from Colorado, I was getting a little jittery about not hearing from you. Glad you're having a good time.

Ivy Green said...

Was this Grammy show supposed to go over into the local news half-hour? We have to have our weather and our sports, not to mention our local crime blotter. Especially the weather. I so like that Denver station's idea to put the weather first!

Carol said...

Cloudy tomorrow and high of 54 Ivy.

Ivy Green said...

Album of the Year? I guess I just don't get it.
