Showdown in San Diego

New York, New York....If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere...Well, the time has come for the upstart most improbable team to be in the NFL playoffs to keep believing...and now Jets...It's up to you, New York, New York!

Tonight the New York Jets take on the San Diego Chargers, as the biggest underdog in the playoffs...but diehard Jets fans really believe....They Will Beat the Bolts!......

It's been more than forty years since the best Super Bowl ever was played in Miami on January 12, 1969, when Broadway Joe Namath 'guaranteed' a win and backed it up and beat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16 to 7.......

The quintessential Jets fan is 'Fireman Ed' Anzalone, who leads the hometown fans at every
New York Jets' home game with this famous chant, "J-E-T-S, Jets!, Jets!, Jets!.....

It's been a long time and lots of dashed dreams along the way, so maybe just maybe tonight is the night for 'Gang Green' to bring back the magic..........so here's to you
NEW YORK, NEW YORK!!!....

While my head tells me the Jets can not win,
they are overmatched by the Chargers, my heart
says 'yes they can'!

And while I was an absolutely crazed Jet fan
when Joe Willie was the QB, I really hope these
Jets win tonight....

And just to be on the safe side,a long suffering Jet fan, Mark Williamson, is not taking any chances...just in case there has been a 'curse' for these 40 years...he engaged the services of a witch who instructed him to perform a 'ritual' to excise any 'blocks' in the way...."could this be magic"?...Jet fans will take whatever help they can get along the way....

Carol,

Study finds aerobics slows brain aging

Apart from its long known health benefits, regular aerobics exercise can ward off thinking and memory problems commonly seen during the aging process.

According to the study published in Archives of Neurology, engaging in moderate physical activity such as brisk walking, swimming and yoga in midlife lowers the risk of developing mild cognitive problems.

High-intensity aerobics routines can improve mental function in seniors already suffering from mild problems such as forgetting names and misplacing items.

According to lead researcher Laura Baker, six months of intense aerobic exercise "improved cognitive abilities of attention and concentration, organization, planning, and multi-tasking."

The study found the influence to be greater in women.

... oops, it was easier to delete it and start over, rather than try to correct the errors in a follow up post.

Solar, That information you linked over at TM talking about aerobics and their effect on the mind made me think about this article:
Mind Aerobics: How To Get Your Memory In Shape.

"It's possible to fight brain busters, scientists increasingly believe, by taking control of your life and reducing stress. What works is a strategy to improve overall health -- and to stimulate the brain with exercises that can be considered "aerobics for the mind."

Be sure to take a quick look at the section on the bottom too, called : " -- Where Did The Year Go?" Mind Aerobics: How To Get Your Memory In Shape.

Good luck on your game today Coreen!

Regular exercise has anti-aging properties

Long-term physical activity can protect individuals against the aging process by stabilizing telomeres at the cellular level, a new study finds.

Telomeres, short sections of DNA at the end of the chromosomes, shorten each time the cell divides, making cells more susceptible to death. These caps which play a critical role in stabilizing DNA are believed to shorten with age.

According to the study published in Circulation, telomeres shorten less quickly in the key immune cells of professional athletes.

Regular physical exercise activates the function of an enzyme known as telomerase — which helps stabilize telomeres, lowering the telomere shortening in leukocytes.

The strongest effect was reported among professional athletes who are used to endurance training.

"Our data improves the molecular understanding of the protective effects of exercise and underlines the potency of physical training in reducing the impact of age-related disease," concluded lead researcher Ulrich Laufs.

Hi, Sally,

Did you have a nice time yesterday...did M get my kiss?

Solar said...

I should have waited to make a thread about exercising but thought since we are in a football mood, that it would go with it.

Tony gave me a shout out over at tm...when I saw it, I looked for this info, and found it right away. so I brought it over here also...

Coreen said...

Hi guys,

Solar, you have a long memory too, 'white shoes' and all, those were the great days,
razzle/dazzle....being a football fan was lots of fun...I don't like the run/smash brand of football, like the high flying passing game, which unfortunately the Chargers are thriving on....not a good omen for the Jets, but 'you
gotta believe'.....

And I hope you do put up an 'exercise' post, I have been trying to do a little more each day,
building up to a more consistent routine....but
so far, not really concentrating enough....

Chloe, give you lots of credit for your
stamina...used to have a toddler who spent a lot of time around our house, & he was a handful, just keeping him entertained....but
maybe you said it already, it gave us a chance to be kids again, playing with toys....puzzles, games, bikes, playing ball, etc...

Enjoy this year, since the 'terrible twos' are not far away.....

One more:

Lifestyle changes can tackle aging

A new study has found that getting more exercise and following a healthy and balanced diet can help postpone age-related cell damage.

According to the study published in The Lancet Oncology, adopting a healthy lifestyle boosts the activity of telomerase, the enzyme that protects cells against damage and death, and thereby delays the aging process.

Findings showed that improving one's diet and lifestyle can increase telomerase levels by 29 percent.

The study revealed that several factors such as smoking, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with shorter-than-average telomeres.

Shorter telomeres and low enzyme activity are indicators of disease and premature death, as they contribute to cardiovascular diseases and many types of cancer.

Conversely, increasing telomerase activity decreases LDL cholesterol levels and stress - intrusive thoughts.

Scientists concluded that following a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, vitamin supplements and fish oil, along with exercise and stress management can help increase telomerase activity and tackle aging.

US Federal Reserve posts record $52bn profit

The US Federal Reserve
The US Federal Reserve has reported a record profit of $52 billion in 2009 due to earnings gained from investments aimed at rescuing the US economy.

The Fed says it paid $46.1 billion to the US Treasury last year from its investments in Treasury bonds and mortgage-related securities — including those of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"The significant increase in earnings on securities was primarily due to increased securities holdings as a result of the Federal Reserve's response to the severe economic downturn," the Federal Reserve explained in a statement on Tuesday.

The entity that functions as a central bank for the US says it returned any profit to the Treasury Department after paying operating costs.

The Fed's profit last year was $14.4 billion more than it had earned in any year since 1914.

The numbers are a sign that the Fed has been successful in dealing with the economic crisis triggered by a dramatic rise in mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures.

But there is a risk of significant future losses if the Fed sells investments or loses mone

Solar,

The testimony by the bankers last week was
at the least 'tone deaf'...while they acknowledged failures in the runup to the near
utter destruction of the world's economy/financial system, in truth, they did not accept any responsibility for the near catastrophe.

While I am not always in tune with Paul Krugman, from his Friday column...

"The official Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission...began taking testimony on Wed.
In its 1st panel the commission grilled four major financial industry honchos. What did we
learn?

Well if you were hoping for a Perry Mason moment--a scene in which the witness blurts out: 'Yes! I admit it! I did it! And I'm glad!"
the hearing was disappointing. What you got,
instead, was witnesses blurting out: 'Yes! I admit it! I'm clueless!'

Ok, not in so many words. But the bankers' testimony showed a stunning failure, even now,to grasp the nature & extent of the current crisis. And that's important". It tells us that as Congress & the administration try to reform the financial system, they should ignore advice coming from the supposed wise men of Wall Street, who have no wisdom to offer."

Bankers without a clue

Solar said...

Coreen,
thanks, and it looked ( I watched a little of it) like the Bankers went prepared for the questioning of the commission, while the commission was not prepared to ask the very tough questions imo...they either don't want to ask the questions, that are needed, or they wont'....

Solar said...

or they don't know that should read...but the bankers look like they are ready to answer the week questions by the commission...

Solar said...

ps, As to you saying that the ones that caused these problems in the first place, should not be listened too....I agree, how obvious is that...Why is a wall st. guy like Giethner the lead man, for Obama.....I would think that there are enough professors of economics that could have done his job, no? same for chairman Bernake.!!

Afternoon folkes. I see the score is still nada to nada. That's a good sign Coreen.

Got my clothes washed and my groceries.

My plumber came today and fixed my plumbing. Whoopee! He had another guy, they dug a hole, pumped tons of water out from under the house, and fixed the broken pipe. Had to go get the pipe. It was the pipe from the hot water to the washer in line. They worked for about 3 hours and only charged me $195. I was so pleased getting it done so soon and it not being too bad. I felt like he was a little too easy on me so I gave him a bonus.

I came home and took the Maggot for a walk. She's the one getting lazy. I was going to make a second trip around but she put on the breaks. I would have had to drag her down the asphalt.

Oh, it's a beautiful day today. Sunny and in the 60s.

And I don't do tattoos. I don't want a wrinkled up little pic on my body.

Carol said...

Chloe, you'll have to ask Coreen about the Vikings. I don't know anything about them. A friend of mine, who is a big football fan, said we'd have to play as good as yesterday or better to beat them next weekend. We've playing in the Dome which is a big plus.

I report to you when I do my exercise because that is what helps keep me working at it. I need an exercise partner to keep me motivated and now you're stuck being my partner. Keep cracking that whip.

The Vikings will be a hand full for your Saints
Carol. Brett Favre is a hall of fame QB with lots of experience, though Jet fans, don't like
him because of the way he failed them in between retiring from the packers & when not being able to play for the vikings, he came to the Jets but after about 8 games in was pretty bad, though he says he was really hurt, now this year he is back to being the champion qb he was for the packers for so many years....

I see there was discussion about pizza at TM...

there is no real pizza....

One of the best pizza places in CT is in West Haven....Zupardi's & there are many who think

"The times I've had to go to laundry mats, because of washing machine problems, or whatever, I have actually enjoyed it. It's warm there (like you said); it smells of that good, clean smell of laundry detergent, and the hum of the machines is kind of calming. (then there's those vending machines, with the junk food, yum... :)."

Chloe, you have a wonderful way with words. I feel the same way about the laundry mat. I would not be going if I did not have a problem with doing laundry at home. Since I have been washing my clothes at the LM I have not had as many problems with skin itchiness - so I definitely believe my machine is not working well.

jan said...

Coreen, Go JETS.

Carol, you were so good at teaching students too. They really loved your classes when we taught together. You shared the passion you had for the content you taught. I am pondering what you said about the docs and that they are not threatened by you in the work you do now. Damn right - you are taking care of a group of people that they probably don't want much to do with.

John has taken clinical (hosp) training with some other ministers who have done prison work. These other ministers, like you, have found the work very satisfying.

My last few years of teaching I went back to teaching undergrads - after about 10 years of teaching in a grad nurse program- and I realized that this was really what I was meant to do. When nurses get their PhDs they think that teaching undergrads is beneath them. What messages we often tell ourselves about who we are??

jan said...

"Sunday morning is jumpin at the laundry. Kind of an international crowd."

I like to go to the laundry mat on Sundays too. Here, many of the American Indian folks wash at the LM. Many of the Navajos who live on their native lands do not have running water. I often see my students or former students at the LM. You can always tell the single men b/c they are doing their own laundry and you don't see them folding women's clothes. If a hetero couple come together, the women ususally do the work and the men sit around and read the paper - sometimes the men pitch in with the folding. I have decided the LM is a study in sociology.

Even when they gave me other faculty to work with, I couldn't let them touch my students because they didn't want to learn the material enough to really help the students.

I've enjoyed my laundry time but now my pipes are fixed. I may still continue to go to the laundramat. There were many hispanic speaking people in today and the TV was on a Spanish channel. Maybe I can get back to trying to learn Spanish and get some practice at the laundramat.

Before hurricane Rita I never saw any Mexican people in our community. Since Rita we have quite a few. I always wondered why Texas had so many and we were so close but no Mexicans.

Anonymous said...

Carol, What causes an enlarged heart?a Could it be too much exercise or steroids??

don1one said...

High blood pressure will cause an enlarged heart over time Chloe, but I doubt that was it in this case. It's why I have to worry though, because medication won't control mine.

The beach bum is reporting in! Hi Don!

don1one said...

Hi Chloe,
Acting French.

Had a great day with my adopted family. My friend left a wonderful family here.

I'm on the two meds that work, but I can easily get up to 200/100 if I'm stressed. My body over reacts to stress ever since I taught high school. Probably a good thing I never had kids, God bless ya'll that did it so successfully.

I thought I had a hyperthyroid like Carol's, but the say I'm normal. It's just my addled mind.

Everyone have a good day?

don1one said...

Well, I'm trying to move here permanently. The special is over at the end of the month though.

So where's everyone at? Out celebrating the Jets win?

I heard from Tony, and waved as I went by. It's going to have to wait till next time though, he's a loooong drive away.

Carol said...

Sorry, I was over at the Trail reading.

Yes Chloe, steroids can cause an enlarged heart.

"Enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. It has been well documented that coronary issues may result from the abuse of anabolic steroids, commonly beginning with the enlargement of the left ventricle."

There are viruses, and other drugs and alcohol. Uncontrolled hypertension but that would take a while. Could be something congenital and then sometimes they just don't know.

May never know what caused it.

Carol said...

Don, have they looked at all the causes of secondary hypertension? Checked out other hormone problems like pheochromocytoma? Rare but difficult to manage. Checked your renal arteries? With all the Bp meds available, it seems something would work. What are you on?

I do have many, especially AA, who are difficult to control even with 4-5 different meds.

don1one said...

Calcium channel blockers actually make my blood pressure go up and beta blockers are why I put on the extra weight in the first place. I haven't gained any weight since I quit taking them. Mostly it's lifestyle. I'm a Type-A that's trying hard to reform. Time on the swamp with a fishing pole sounds wonderful. The extra daylight down south is also really beneficial.

It's probably hormonal, but as a contractor my health insurance is on again off again and I had a terrible PA that wasted a lot of time last time. I have a lot of personal interest in the current HCR bill. Congress did do something wonderful, a reduced COBRA rate is available for 15 months now.

Carol said...

Don, That $4/mo deal they have at Walmart and Walgreens has some of the oldies but goodies on the list for Bp.

I tried Enalapril, a ACE, and it shot my Bp up really high. I'm on an old beta blocker, that I needed when hyperthyroid, and the generic for Norvasc, a calcium channel blocker.

don1one said...

Norvasc is the one I had trouble with. It'll shoot me up over 30 points

ACE inhibitor and a diuretic help. They used to take care of it though when I wasn't exercising enough.

I'm trying to change my lifestyle, it's about time. 100 hour work weeks aren't a stranger.

I'm on a crusade to bring sanity back to the American lifestyle. Our culture is severely broken. More fun!

Carol said...

Don, I saw that Fayetteville had a high of 71 today. We didn't even get there.

don1one said...

BTW, it's not the meds, it's the tests.

Carol said...

Not sure what you mean there Don.

Carol said...

Nice to have a Sunday evening where I don't have to iron clothes for work in the morning. MLK's BD tomorrow.

don1one said...

So you actually get the holiday Carol? That's great.

You were getting warm temps before we did Carol. But I'm not going to have to worry about that for the next 2 weeks.

I had a PA run a bunch of tests to find the problem, but he did them wrong and kept getting what the results meant wrong. So now I have to go back through all the tests again.

All I learned was that I had a meningioma. And I don't know if it's growing yet. That's $1,500 for a non-insurance rate.

Carol said...

Has anyone heard if they have gotten food and water to those people in Haiti yet? I don't have cable but the little I have seen looks like those people are starving for food and water.

I could never understand why they couldn't have lowered pallets of food and water to those people in NO after Katrina. Anderson Cooper was there handing out the little water he had. All the news people get where they want to go but the government can't?

If the roads are impassable why can't helicopters hook up pallets of food and water and lower it to areas where people could all get to it? It makes no sense putting up all these hospitals if people are going to starve and thirst to death.

Carol said...

Don, here, we have hospitals with clinics you can go to if you don't have insurance and can't afford expensive tests. Or they might charge on a sliding scale. Some specialists may not be local. Do you have that available where you live?

Carol said...

As a Veteran, can you go to VA for care?

don1one said...

C-130s can do low altitude drops out the back. Plus what helicopters can bring in. It's just getting everything going. I think this time there won't be anyone turning back shipments.

I'm not watching the news. I'm really trying to treat the causes of stress, not hide the symptoms. I really think we need to get back to a village, not a consumer, mentality.

don1one said...

i could probably get VA benefits, but there are a lot of Iraq veterans that really need them.

I just 86'd the customer that was causing the stress in the first place.
