Know where you are, to see where you’re going

.... this is just a lead-up to Solar's up-coming 'Excercise Post':

Various studies show that it is never too late to get fit. The human body responds to exercise, no matter what its age, and there are many health benefits.

"About half of the physical decline associated with ageing may be due to a lack of physical activity. Without regular exercise, people over the age of 50 years can experience a range of health problems including:

* Reduced muscle mass, strength and physical endurance
* Reduced coordination and balance
* Reduced joint flexibility and mobility
* Reduced cardiovascular and respiratory function
* Reduced bone strength
* Increased body fat levels
* Increased blood pressure
* Increased susceptibility to mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression
* Increased risk of various diseases including cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Some of the many benefits of regular exercise include:

* Muscle – the amount and size of muscle fibres decreases with age. Some studies suggest that the average body loses around 3kg of lean muscle every decade from middle age. The muscle fibres that seem to be most affected are those of the ‘fast twitch’ (phasic) variety, which govern strength and speedy contraction. There is evidence to suggest that these changes are related to a sedentary lifestyle, rather than age. Muscle mass can increase in the older person after regularly exercising for a relatively short period of time.

* Bone – bone density begins to decline after the age of 40, but this loss accelerates around the age of 50 years. As a result of this bone loss, older people are more prone to bone fractures. Exercise can reduce the risk of bone loss and osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise, in particular, helps to keep bones healthy and strong.
* Heart and lungs – moderate intensity exercise is most favourable: for example, exercising at about 70 per cent of the individual’s maximum heart rate (220 beats per minute minus your age). Studies show that cardiorespiratory fitness takes longer to achieve in an older person than a young person, but the physical benefits are similar. Regardless of age, people are able to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness through regular exercise.
* Joints – the joints of the body require regular movement to remain supple and healthy. In particular, people with arthritis can benefit from aerobic and strengthening exercise programs.
* Body fat levels – carrying too much body fat has been associated with a range of diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Regular exercise burns calories, increases muscle mass and speeds the metabolism. Together, these physiological changes help maintain an appropriate weight for their height and build." http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Healthy_ageing_stay_physically_active

Coreen, I did it again. I just went back to make a change on my post, and see you have one waiting to put up. If you want to do it today, I'll delete this one (unless I can find a way to put it in limbo).

Please let me know, or else just go ahead and post yours whenever you're ready. Sorry I didn't see it 'til I got this one up.

White House caught in Democrats' crossfire
Congressional Democrats — stunned out of silence by Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts — say they’re done swallowing their anger with President Barack Obama and ready to go public with their gripes

“The administration has got to be in the forefront now, instead of throwing some meat on the track and seeing what the House can work out

“I haven’t seen Rahm Emanuel except on television. We used to see him a lot; I’d like him to come out from behind his desk and meet with the common folk,”........ Emanuel, for his part, is now pushing for a stripped-down health care bill that could be passed within a few weeks and force Republicans, for a change, to take a few tough votes.

That may mollify some Democratic moderates, but it will further infuriate the liberals, who insist that the lesson of Massachusetts is that Obama has come on too weak, not too strong. New York Times columnist Paul Krugman captured the left’s winter of discontent Thursday with a blog post in which he wrote that he’s “pretty close to giving up on Mr. Obama, who seems determined to confirm every doubt I and others ever had about whether he was ready to fight for what his supporters believed in.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31839.html

Got off early and sitting on my wharf

day.

Great post. May just relax and
enjoy this day. May drop in
a line to see if the fish remember me.

Chloe, love the post. I missed my morning walk. I will miss it tomorrow too. I am taking my group of 8 students to a big health fair in town. We will be doing blood pressures and BMI's and doing some teaching on these 2 topics. It is always a lot of fun and a good way to get the new year started. We will be there from 9-5.

jan said...

Carol, How wonderful that you can sit out on your wharf. What a great way to spend a Friday.

Thanks for giving me the go-ahead Coreen!

Jan, That health fair sounds like a lot of work. It will make up for not getting your walks in. Sounds like you enjoy it, so I hope you have a great day.

Carol, So glad to see you got to start your weekend a little early. That'll give you a little more time to unwind and tap into what's most important to you: Maggie, your river and all the other little critters.

I can't believe we're being blessed with such beautiful weather. It's a break well needed, and will make it easier to tolerate the cold that will be coming our way before the rest of winter is over. I hope we have a February like last year though. I remember things start to bloom by the middle of the month. Maybe we'll get another warm one.

Coreen said...

What are you guys doing.....keep talking about
the 'beautiful, warm' weather....meanwhile,
while the snow is gone, & its 40, it is still
winter.....& someone is sending a bunch of
rain this way.....

And far as yoga, I can do some of the positions, but who can balance on one foot
for more than a few seconds....I keep trying
to increase my time, but get wobbly pretty quick....

Solar said...

Coreen,

Don't do that type of yoga, there are positions that strengthen your back, that are the only ones that you need, and the stretching one..like I said google denise austin..she has a lot of good ones.

Chloe I have been working on some paper work and almost finished..will put up post to be in combination with your very excellent one..

Everyone is to blame for the S. C. decision...both parties.... first part....

Going to bring a cpl of posts that I made over at tm...

Sturg, I remembered differently but............

Finance Reform....never stood a chance under any party.!! here is an example of bipartisan that they had.!!

Bush Veto: 102nd Congress, 1991–92. In the 102nd Congress, reformers
suffered yet another twist of the knife. This time, a bill was sent to the president’s
desk for signature, but it was all a thinly veiled ruse. Many members of
Congress who voted for the measure did so knowing that the president would
veto the bill and that there were not enough votes to override the veto.
At the outset of this Congress, Boren teamed up with a formidable set of
Democratic senators: Majority Leader Mitchell; Wendell Ford (Ky.), chair of
the Rules Committee; Robert Byrd, now chair of the powerful Appropriations
Committee; and Carl Levin (Mich.), a key strategic leader for reform. This
group and others sponsored S. 3, the Senate Election Ethics Act, which
included spending limits, public financing, aggregate PAC limits, and softmoney
restrictions. The public financing provisions included communications
vouchers, low-cost mailing, and discounted TV rates. S. 3 passed the Senate
by a vote of 56–42 on May 23, 1991.
The House Democratic leadership developed legislation similar to S.3.
This bill, H.R. 3750, the House of Representatives Spending Limit and Election
Reform Act, included spending limits and an aggregate PAC limit (public
financing provisions were struck from the bill before it reached the House
floor). The bill passed the House by a vote of 273–156 on November 25, 1991.
Yet the strong support of Democrats was misleading; they knew that Bush
intended to veto campaign finance reform legislation passed by a Democratic
Congress. For those Democrats who secretly opposed reform, this vote was an
easy way out: a way to be for reform publicly, all the while knowing no reform
would be signed into law, and they could later campaign against Bush as the
antireform candidate.
The House adopted the S. 3 conference report by a vote of 259–165 on
April 9, 1992. The Senate passed the S. 3 conference report by a vote of 56–42
on April 30, 1992. On May 9, 1992 Bush vetoed the bill, saying, “We do not
need . . . a taxpayer-financed incumbent protection plan.”5 Four days later, in
a predictable and anticlimactic vote, the Senate failed to override the veto by
a vote of 57–42 (nine votes short of the required two-thirds majority). Common
Cause supported the legislation but did so with a sense of resignation
over the foreseeable outcome.

Clinton, Foley, and McConnell: 103rd Congress, 1993–94. On Inauguration

Day, January 20, 1993, President Bill Clinton told the nation in his inaugural
speech: “This beautiful Capital, like every capital since the dawn of
civilization, is often a place of intrigue and calculation. . . . And so I say to all
of you here: let us resolve to reform our politics so that power and privilege
no longer shout down the voice of the people. . . . Let us give this Capital back
to the people to whom it belongs.”6 But the reform sentiment reflected in the
speech proved to be short-lived and insincere. Within weeks, in meetings with
the Democratic leadership in Congress, Clinton readily acceded to their view
that campaign finance reform would hurt Democrats’ ability to hold onto their
majorities in Congress. Over the next eight years, Clinton occasionally
included support of reform in his speeches but never made any significant
effort to push for campaign finance reform legislation in Congress.
This failure to support reform was never more critical than in the 103rd
Congress, when both the Senate and House passed sweeping reform legislation,
including spending limits, public resources in the form of low-cost TV
and other communications resources, soft-money restrictions, and PAC limits.
The Senate passed S. 3, the Congressional Spending Limit and Election
Reform Act, by a vote of 60–38 on June 17, 1993. The bill’s principal sponsors
were Boren and Mitchell. S. 3 included spending limits, low-cost TV time and
mail rates, a PAC ban, and a soft-money ban. Common Cause supported the
legislation.
The House again passed a broad but weaker version of the Senate bill.
H.R. 3, the Campaign Spending Limit and Election Reform Act, passed by a
vote of 255–175 on November 22, 1993. H.R. 3 included spending limits, an
aggregate PAC limit, communications vouchers (without a funding mechanism),
and soft-money restrictions. Representative Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.)
and the Democratic leadership sponsored the bill.
The House bill was less attractive to reformers, but there was a realistic
possibility that a House-Senate conference committee would produce a strong
reform package. Unfortunately, over the year remaining in the 103rd Congress
after the House passed its bill in November 1993, the Democrats (who controlled
Congress and the White House) stalled and refused to push hard for a
conference. Both reform bills died.
The Democrats were not the only reason reform died in the 103rd Congress.
Another key figure in this protracted stall was a long-time opponent of reform
who was emerging as the Darth Vader of Congressional reform battles. Republican
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky used the Senate’s sixty-vote filibuster
weapon to block any efforts to move the Senate legislation to conference.
The opposition to reform by a range of Democrats and Republicans in
Congress—as well as White House passivity—showed how thin and brittle
Federal Campaign Finance Reform 131
132 Harshbarger, Davis
majority votes for reform are. There are many members of Congress who publicly
support reform and vote for good legislation but then stand by and allow
opponents to defeat any reform effort.
Republicans Take Over: 104th Congress

Well Louisiana isn't doing as bad as many of the other states but I bet that has to do with the fact that we are still rebuilding from those hurricanes.

Chloe I have a Yoga CD that's pretty easy. It's Yoga for Beginners with Rodney Yee. I got it a while back at Sams. It has three different programs, AM, PM and Stress Relief. I like the AM the best. It's pretty easy.

I haven't done it in a while, just found it again. I think I will start tomorrow's program with it. Good way to start the day.

I pretty much took today off except for a couple of walks. I did go to Walmart this afternoon to take that off tomorrow's schedule. I made myself go from one end of the store to the other. Often I try to be real efficient with the work required in my chores then I have to take other time to exercise. I've decided I just ought to make all my activities as hard as I can and just keep thinking about the calories I'm burning.

I'm going to try the ab workout tomorrow.

Tweet from Christopher Hayes at the Nation that sums up how I've felt the last 7 years. 'After this week, tempted to start describing my job as "Watching Rome burn very, very slowly."'

I still haven't made it to the beach. I've picked up 3 short term jobs this week and finished my last call at 5pm. By the time I got out the door the fog was rolling in. We're socked in.

When Tiger completes his sex addiction program, does he have to give up sex? Sorry I was just watching something about it on Nancy Grace.

I'm not sure I buy Tiger having a sex addiction. I think he did it cuz he could and he wasn't ready to give up that life for being a husband and father.

Tiger has his own cottage and maid service at his addiction clinic. They just said Tiger required a $100,000 renovation to his cottage before he went. Maybe he even has a few "massages" sessions while he's there. What a joke.

That clinic has a 64% success rate for the first 6 mo after treatment. Whow!

"Parsley, Sage, Rosemary..." Carol, sounds like a good song. Good to hear you had a good day even if some of your herbs didn't make it.

Having a weekend is good enough for me too. The next 3 weekends will be busy for me. I have the health fair this weekend and our 8 year old grand daughter for the next 2 weekends. She is a sweetie, but I will be glad to have my weekends back. When I think of what I am saying here, I think of you Chloe. I guess you have full time care of Emma.

We saw a movie tonight. My granddaughter mentioned above was in the movie but we did not see her. She had a small speaking part, but they must have cut it out. Oh well, we enjoyed the movie anyway. It was "The spy Next Door" The movie was made in Albuquerque. It was pretty slow at first but improved and wound up being a fun movie. It was with Jackie Chan. Billie Ray Cyrus had a part in it. My granddaughter was thrilled with meeting Billy Ray - his daughter is Miley Cyrus and her idol.

don1one said...

It's just the 2012 thing in me Carol. Mostly it's interesting to see how the Haiti earthquakes have set off earthquakes all over the US, especially in places where I'm not used to seeing them. The total US count was really low leading up to the quake, then quakes spread out all over the southeast US.

The solar cycle has kicked off with a big bang after a record lull too. So there are all kinds of interesting things going on.

I'd love to go up to Alaska next winter to see some auroras, but that's a long flight unless I'm fairly certain I'll see something. Now there's hope.

Carol said...

Jan, who is setting up the booth for your health fair? When I worked at my Diabetes Education Center, I did free blood sugars at health fairs frequently and we always found new people with diabetes. It used to be that about half the people with diabetes don't know they have it. With more monitoring these days, I'm not sure if that is still the case.

I got my glucose test strips from my reps for free. It was good advertisement for them. One problem that I often noted from other health professionals doing community blood sugar monitoring is that they used the same lancet device for everyone. They would only change the lancet inside. That is a very dangerous practice. The part of the device that comes in contact with the finger is considered contaminated and blood borne diseases can be transferred from person to person. The device that comes with a monitor is for use with only one person.

It is more expensive to use the kind of device where the entire tip of the device is disposed of after each person. When I saw these people doing this, I would go tell them that they shouldn't do it and you should have seen the looks I got. They didn't stop doing it. I just wonder how many people could have picked up some disease from that practice.

That unsafe practice is done frequently, even at Docs offices. Everyone should be aware of that and not let anyone stick their finger unless the device used doesn't have a part that could have come in contact with anyone else being stuck. It's a sad fact that many health professional can be spreading blood borne diseases.

Carol said...

Another sad fact is that there are so many people out there that have been prescribed an intensive insulin programs and don't have a clue what they are doing. It's amazing that more people don't kill themselves with their prescription. I see that everyday at work. Even many of the people who have had diabetes for years and think they know what they are doing, don't have a clue.

It is such a complex disease that many health professional that treat the disease don't even have a clue what they are doing. That is one of the reasons I decided to become an NP. I could teach the patient but couldn't teach the practitioner treating the patient. It was very frustrating.

Doctors had the misconception that many older people wouldn't cooperate with a good management program so why bother. They even told their patients with 200+ blood sugars that they had borderline diabetes.

My senior citizens with diabetes were my best patients. They were old enough to realize that they wanted to hang around longer and in the best condition possible. It was the younger ones who were stubborn.

don1one said...

I have a neighbor that would rather give himself three injections a day than give up drinking beer. My experience is the opposite. Both of my parents and my older neighbors refuse to change, they'd rather take the shots.

Carol said...

And Chloe, pic #4 reminds me of the time that a friend of mine and I went up to Hodges Gardens, about 100 miles north of here. We went for a weekend of biking and fishing. We took our new bikes to ride thru the gardens but didn't remember that it was really hilly up there. We made it up one hill, fell off our bikes and gasped, looking just like those women in the pic. We put the bikes back up and just fished for the rest of the weekend.
Thank God ya don't have to pre-condition to fish.

Carol said...

Alcohol and insulin can be a very dangerous combination Don since hypoglycemia and drunk look pretty much the same. A very low blood sugar will kill you faster than a very high one.

Carol said...

Both of your parents have diabetes Don? That pretty much gives you close to 100% chance of developing the disease. It can be prevented with an aerobic exercise program and maintaining a healthy body weight but you can't just throw caution to the wind.

don1one said...

I hadn't realized alcohol caused hypoglycemia until the other day. Sounds like it could be quite a roller coaster ride, and really hard on the body

Carol said...

Alcohol is usually metobolized as a fat. Doesn't necessarily raise the blood sugar. People will drink instead of eat. Alcohol adds to weight gain which makes diabetes more difficult to control.

Carol said...

Well, my lazy time is up. I'm going to start with that Yogo CD I found again yesterday.

don1one said...

That's surprising. But doesn't alcohol affect triglycerides? Or is that part of the overall weight gain?

don1one said...

I'm going back to sleep. Bad habit of waking up in the middle of the night for a while. I'm especially wired because of all the exercise I got yesterday.

Solar, how many push-ups a day? I'm setting a marine goal. :^)

don1one said...

wow, maybe not. I didn't realize it was so late. Phhht.

Carol said...

Maybe alcohol is considered like a fat because the calories are closer to fat. It's empty calories.

Triclyerides are a form of fat, Don. When we eat too many carbs they are stored as triglycerides.

Carol, Is this the same one? If so, I'm going to order it. (you're such a good influence on me)

" I've decided I just ought to make all my activities as hard as I can and just keep thinking about the calories I'm burning."

... that's what I always used to do, but I've just been lazy the last couple of years. It's all just a frame of mind. Once you start watching calories, and concentrate on good health, all the right ideas just line up. Just 'being aware' of calories seems to be enough.

ps Carol, I agree with you about Tiger's sex addiction thing. 'All' these celebrities do the same thing when they get caught, and they do it to rehabilitate their reputation. As for the 64% success rate at the clinic, how to they come up with that. They probably called the guy and ask him if he's been screwin' around anymore, and what's he going to say: 'No! Of course not!' Ha.

Don, Thanks for asking about those tae bo links. Yes, I did find them, following your lead, but they're more strenuous than what I'm wanting to start out doing. You must be in awfully good shape, the way you eat and exercise. You're a good example of what I meant when I was talking about the importance of having the right frame of mind.

Congrats on those two job offers you got. Have you made a call to the people at the one you most wanted (the dream job), and asked them if they filled the position yet? If they haven't, then a phone call often moves you up the list.

Sorry to hear you never made it to the beach, before the fog rolled in. I remember that on the Pacific. It was foggy in all the beach towns a lot of the time, at least in the mornings. I sure don't miss the fog.

Oh man, that sounds heavenly. The important part of that thought, is how great it is that you know exactly what you want (you have any idea how many people don't?). Once it's visualized Don, it's sure to happen (one way or the other).

Carol, I just scanned some of the posts from this morning. I'd forgotten about your mom having diabetes. No wonder you avoid sugar. I always feel like my worst enemy is fat. Speaking of 'empty' calories, or at least that's how I see them.

As far as storing those carbs as fat, that doesn't happen until we eat over our daily allotted calories, does it? At least, I hope not. But let's say we eat a bunch of protein and a few carbs, are the carb the one's that will be stored?

Carol, I just saw your funny bicycling story. I used to cycle a lot for a few years, (around the time, or shortly after that I was a daily runner). Running was my greatest love those.

Those were the days. Hard to believe I could become this lazy.

"I have a neighbor that would rather give himself three injections a day than give up drinking beer."

... that's because he's 'addicted' to alcohol. A deadly addiction.

Carol said...

Chloe, my mom's diabetes was secondary to all her adrenal tumors pouring out the cortisol. I probably won't have to worry about diabetes unless I inherit that form of cancer.

http://rodneyyeeyogastore.com/120-1276.html That is the AM and PM program. I like the AM one. PM has more difficult poses. I found a DVD with those two programs and another one on it at Sam's many years ago. I wonder if they still have it. It was cheap.

Carol said...

I guess Chloe they could hook up a dick-o-meter on those guys to monitor their activities after they finish their program. Give their wives some device that will erase the activity count if she is involved in the activity.

It seems to me one of the significant parts of the addiction program is self discipline. They have to keep their rooms clean, plan their meals together etc. Tiger has waxed that out of his program. In my opinion his participation in the program is an expensive joke or a publicity gesture.

With my Yoga this morning increasing my focus, I noticed how dusty my floor and ceiling is. Yuk. I also noticed a fish hitting something on the surface of the water. I haven't seen much fish activity since Winter got here.

Well off to do chores. I was going to go back to the laundramat to do my clothes because it is faster then I realized that while I'm at my house waiting I can work on my pool full of leaves.

What really disturbs me about Haiti is how poorly that disaster is being managed. Yesterday I watched Gupta take a garbage bag into the airport to get some meds for some of the hospitals. Then he carried it out to the medical site where they desparately needed it. Now that is just awful. If he could do it, it can be done.

The stuff is piling up at the airport and not getting to the places where it's needed. By the time the food/water is getting to the people, they are so starved that they attack the people bringing it. Or the cops shoot them in the back for grabbing a bag of rice.

Good morning,

Lots of motivation here this a.m. I am going
to attempt to concentrate on actually fitting
in some exercises into each day.

I think the more talk there is about the daily rituals may help some like me to keep working at it.

So far, Carol you seem committed to a daily
routine, which I am going to try to follow as well.

Coreen said...

And for those of you with directtv, here is
the guy, Gilad, Bodies In Motion, excellent motivation, I used to watch (but cablevision dropped the fittv channel) I do have some of his videos but again get lazy...& never follow through....

When I did the exercises I felt so much better....

Gilad's Body In Motion

Very good converstations all around. I still haven't had the chance to prepare that post that I want to do..it will just be a follow up to Chlo's, but will show how anyone can keep healthy, and even reverse some bad body feelings, (sickness) by juicing....

Don, Funny thing that U mention Geology, In the back ground, im listening to the History Chanel..I forgot to start taping How the Earth was made....it is a must for me to have and watch it, until i understand it all.....
Don, Im going to add to my post, my work out routine....at least every other day. I do 50-60 push ups....it is one of the best overall exercises that there is...

Carol, one way or the other the State that you live will not be around in 100 yrs, it will be underwater, and then It will be a Suburb of Atlantis....

Solar said...

One of the reasons that Geology is so fascinating, is that it is a true form of history. They have found lots of baby whales that have formalized in the Sahara Desert....it has whale bones, and others, in the desert...

don1one said...

Gilad is on FitTv. i brought a bunch of dvd's with me so I could exercise while I was down here. I feel better and have more room.

Unfortunately, the dvd player on this laptop smoked, so I don't have a way to play them. I'm finding a bunch of things on youtube instead.

I think doing what you can is what counts chloe. Even if you can't keep up and need to take breaks, if it's fun and you keep at it you'll be doing all the workout surprisingly fast.

St. Pete has a gardens in what used to be an empty lake. some guy started planting it and now it's a full botanical garden. I'd like to do something like that. My 6' rubber tree will be a good start. But I just feel so much better down here it's hard to imagine living back up north.

Can hardly wait to see your post Solar. Chloe started us out nicely. I think our bodies want to exercise and have fun, we just stop listening to that part of it.

Solar said...

Don,

"I think our bodies want to exercise and have fun, we just stop listening to that part of it."

Most definitely, ist and foremost we are an animal that if we don't listen to our brain, when it is telling the body, that it needs to get off the couch and go, and track down t he great bison, we will just get lazy, and weak by just going to the store for our kill,,and then it is full of chemicals....so we do need to do acrobatics...

The hard part that Coreen, and some others have some times.... is getting started, the hard part comes in when they are all alone, and don't have a working out buddy, ..Carol is doing great, cos she mentally gave me-us a contract to do it..she committed herself..everyone has to find out how to commit...

I will have that post shortly...sorry that it is not done....I have had to set up, and get a lot of paper work for the State of Ohio,,,still working on the very good possibility of doing work with them.....the banks have been impossible until now...but I have switched gears on them a little, and it looks a lot better, for them to take a bit...like Carol,s fishing I giving them something to nibble on......

Solar said...

I think that I will do that post right after Coreen does her next one...I don't believe in diets, or any of that motivational stuff, that people make tons of money for from the ones that are looking for help.....

Just was on the phone again, that and back and forth emails are driving me nuts....but making me nuts is just a short walk, not a drive.:-))

Solar said...

acrobatics= aerobics

don1one said...

Good luck on that work Solar. Hope you can reel them in. A little ice fishing up your way, no?

I was trying to encourage them Solar. guess I wasn't doing well. At first your muscles need to get stretched out, push out that lactic acid, and the time become a regular part of the schedule.

Then the endorphins start kicking in so you don't feel the soreness, and miss it if you don't work out.

I started out last summer just with nightly walks, and it took weeks before I could build up to an easy 2 miles. So it was a long push for me.

My favorite is working out in the yard. I always find ways to dig a lot or haul things around or push a manual mower. But it was already in the lower 50s when I got back and dropped quickly from that. But we can find better ways to do the everyday things in our lives to help. Like walk in instead of go through a drive through, walk up the escalator, etc..

gee, that's almost a post, huh?

don1one said...

Solar, just did Billy Blanks ab workout. wow!

Solar said...

Don,

If you did his work out, and feel good afterwards...yes wow...that is one way to keep moving, and what i like about it...is that there are not machines, to confuse u..u use your own body...people like Myself, Coreen, and Carol, should not do these....we need different ones for our bones and backs...

All of those things that u mentioned are very good..specially like that-pushing the lawn mower one...that is why I still use a shovel to clean the snow from my driveway, and walks...the neighbors think that im nuts....

It sound like you are in doing good now, so stick to it...Tony Baloney is in real good shape he uses a stepper, and does about an hour...I use a tread mill and do about 45-50 minuets after a complete wieght work out...

The first 15 minuets of any program, doesn't even count...that is what it takes to warm up the body...and then it starts to go on the hunt...it starts to use up the energy that it takes to stay in shape...Im just started to work on that post, i hope that it comes out right...

Solar said...

Im kinda mad at myself for not taping this "How the Earth was made" shows...on Saturday's I like to see what is on all day, and just leave the Tivo on all day....weather im here or not...

Carol said...

What channel was that program on Solar? The earth one.

I just got back from some of my chores. When I got to my house I found huge trenches in my front yard. Some bozo drove into my driveway and tried to turn around in my front yard. With all the rain, my yard is very wet, soft and won't dry out until summer.

They left huge, long, at least a foot deep, trenches in my yard. They also left the crap they used to try to get out. It will take at least a dump truck full of dirt to fill in the trenches. I wish I knew who did it.

Solar said...

Carol,
Sorry about the tire marks, maybe u can get someone help you backfill them while everything is soft..and won't need the dump trk...

That was on the history channel...now that you have you're dish up...look at the stations that are 9400 thru 9430...they are very good on weekends...others that I used to have on all of the time..is the History, international, and the science channel....I never felt that satellite was a waste of time...

Glad to see you finally got your butt back here Solar. It's about time!

Coreen has a sports post ready for tomorrow, for her and Carol's teams, so that bought you another day or so, if you want it.

Seriously though, there's no pressure here - although I'm sure we will learn a lot from you regarding the appropriate exercises to improve health, if you don't really want to do one. Mine wasn't anymore than a copy and paste Solar. Just thought it had some good basic info.

... we missed you!

" I was thinking about going to get something to plant and then I thought, you idiot, it's still January."

... the weather yesterday made that a little hard to remember Carol. I was beginning to think it was spring too - was looking out at my hummer feeder, considering filling it. Then I came to the same realization you came to - it's Jan. Today is warm, but hazy. I'll take warm anyway I can get it though.

Anonymous said...

"When I think of what I am saying here, I think of you Chloe. I guess you have full time care of Emma."

It's different when they live with you Jan. After a while, you don't miss those weekends, you're just glad to have them around. I've gotten to that stage already. She's such a part of my life, and it gets easier and easier to go about my routine. Like I mentioned a while back, it's all about using your organizational skills.

By the time she's four, everything in my life will go back to normal (and is already happening gradually), because that's the age that I integrate babies into just about everything I do as a normal routine. She'll go to movies and everywhere else I go - I've always found that by that age, they're capable of being very well behaved (when they're happy).

Solar said...

Chlo,

Between 4-5 is the only age that I want a boy, or a girl around me...until they are 12, and then throw them out the door...until they are not so know it alls....

If I had a lot of work right now,...I would go get me one of those earthquake babies...or from somewhere.....and teach them all about concrete construction...and want them around me all of the time..just like I did my son Tommy, I used to get his butt out of bed, and help me do everything....wait, wait never mind....he never did construction work after he was old enough to make his own decisions..12 yrs fn old.......and he knew everything, about everything......

Coreen, I'm looking to get motivated like you: in the exercise, eating healthy department. Yoga looks like a good way to start, because it's more about stretching and balance - a good way to build up to something a little more aerobic. I'm not feeling energetic enough to starting jumping around the room yet.

I'm also going to work on my eating habits. Every so often, I come to the realization that it's time to start eating better, and this is one of them. I did make a really 'healthy' spaghetti sauce today, and enjoyed it 'so' much. I went to bed dreaming about spaghetti last night (although I prefer rigatoni, so I make both).

Ha! I agree Solar. Although, I really am enjoying this one while she's a baby, more than I have ever enjoyed one before in my life. But I completely agree, after they're a few years old, there's a lot more companionship and it's easy to involve them in all that you do.

What you said about those earthquake babies really rung a bell. Wouldn't it be great if those who were able to, could help them out that way!? I did see a clip on the TV news this morning (when I was passing by, I think CNN) that showed a family that had taken in a teenage Haiti boy. I don't know if they were going to adopt them or not.

There's a lot of kids out there, no matter where you look, that need a home or at least some good influence.

Solar, I was thinking. It's weird the way we get such a good idea (feeling) of who everyone is here (their very 'being'), without meeting them in person. It's like an essence, like we get to know the most important things about who they are and what they care about, without having to mix it all up with the pressures of our everyday life. It's special.

You know, the way our brains work, they fill in the right words automatically, when we're reading a post. So, needn't worry about errors.

Hey Solar, I was just thinking (again.. ha!). You know that meditation thing you talk about, where you're in your yard, connecting to someone on the other side of the world. Well, that's what we're doing here too (in a more tangible way).

That thing I've been saying about having to imagine and visualize things, and then they happen. We make them happen... there's no doubt in my mind.

I understand the body language thing, and of course, we all do it. But this is a totally different experience, and I think not being able to use all the things we've learned about body language and eye contact, makes it so. I think some of those things we've learned are a form of prejudice, in the sense that it's pre-judgment according to decisions we've made (or learned) in the past.

I love the idea of keeping things in a 'intuitive' frame of thinking.

I'm sure that takes a lot of trust Solar - since it would require one to really 'let go'. I don't think I could do it - I'm too determined to be in control. Letting go isn't easy. I think that's why it's harder for some of us to get to sleep too.

Loggerhead Shrike is a medium-sized bird.

Carol, I saw a bird out by my gate this morning, that was grey and had black and white wings. I'm positive it was this Loggerhead Shrike. I took a mental note of it's markings for two reasons (besides it's beauty): one is I'd never seen one before, and the other is that it was fat, like the birds from the northern states (like in Coreen's snow pics).

The link said: It winters from southern Oregon and Kansas, Tennessee and Virginia, and southwards, to southern Mexico., but during spring and summer migrations, it may be seen in California, southern Mexico and Florida. Therefore I figure it was on it's way to Mexico, because it didn't have much further to go. Just seems kinda late for that. Maybe it stayed here instead, since the weather's been so good the last few days, at least.

Anybody ever seen one? (I walked up to it within 8-10 feet before it flew off... so cool)

Anonymous said...

... I don't know if there's an unusual amount of bird activity here this year, or if I'm just noticing it more. They fly a lot higher than I see them in the spring and summer, so it's easy to see them since the trees are so barren. A lot of them that do come down and land are the little tiny ones like I saw last year.

don1one said...

What state are you in again Chloe?

We're seeing a lot of birds in NC even the natives have never seen before. I want to put one of those motorized webcams over the bird feeders so I can get some images. They don't stay around long, so they don't get used to me like the cardinals and other local birds.

Anonymous said...

Don, We're a couple of hours N/W of Houston.

Love that idea of the motorized webcam. Flatus, over at TM, said they put a microphone outside to hear the bird sounds in the spring and summer.

I used to see the Loggerhead Shrike in my yard when I lived in Houston. It can be mistaken for a Mockingbird. It's nickname is "The Butcher-bird" for its tendency to impale its prey on twigs and thorns which I saw it do, and that's when I knew it wasn't a Mockingbird.

Well, I'm going to put this little booger-board in my carry-on for the a.m. All I'll need to think about is "where is my coffee?" on the way out the door! see ya's. lol

We should be there in plenty of time...might miss the first quarter.

Have a nice trip Ivy and hope you get to check in with us. Happy Anniversary!

safe trip ivy. If you come back I'll be spending another week at the beach.

I have 4 contracts Carol, all of which I can (and normally do) work on in my jammies. I have long flannels and they're very comfortable. I haven't worked on site since early November.

My brother's wedding was in Iowa so his wife's parents could brag about it to their friends. that's where her parents lived. Very strange people back there.

I get a little confused where I am at times.

Don, Contraband Days is one of our largest festivals here in SW La. It's in the Spring and for a couple of weeks the pirates take over the city.

Don, Interesting thing about the earthquakes - we had one here in NM a few days ago too- I think a 4.0 or 4.1

Ivy Green said...

"Contraband Days" are a celebration of the Pirate Jean Lafitte, n'est-ce pas?

Ivy, Happy Anniversary. Hope you have a great trip.

Don, I will try your formula for posting links. Thanks again.
I envy you your walk on the beach looking at shells and other stuff. Those were my favorite times when we visited Wrightsville Beach several years ago. I loved searching for shells there. Since we moved to Albuq 7 years ago we have not been back.

Carol, the health fair was put on by a radio station and the University hospital here. We did not do blood glucose. A local lab did draw blood for glucose, cholesterol and other tests. People paid for those $10.- $15.00 per test. The results are mailed out. The students and I do free BP's and BMI's and teaching. We had a great time and the students get lots of practice of those skills.

Been a long day. Off to bed.

Jan, with all those electronic Bp cuffs out and used now, taking a Bp has gotten to be a lost skill. When I taught physical assessment, I found that the task of taking a Bp and counting a pulse was the most difficult for students to learn.

I had nurses who came back to school to get their BSN, after years of practicing nursing, who couldn't count a pulse. Scary.

thanks. Love to hear regional celebrations, food, and traditions.

We're such a young nation, we don't have a lot of our own. I'd like to explore Louisiana more, I haven't done much more than drive through. But it has a fascinating history.

It's been an interesting couple of years for earthquakes. How many people knew there was a fault coming up the middle of the Gulf of California?

The Hayward fault in California is way overdue, and its in the middle of a fairly densely populated area. Question is, do these quakes relieve pressure or cause more to build up?

"Have fun with your new bird find. Whenever I "collect" a new species, I spend the next days and weeks hoping to spot it again."

Ivy, Hope you have fun in Colorado, and that the weather there is good for you.

Sure do miss you when you're not here to chat with us. I hadn't even thought of going out and trying to spot my 'Butcher-bird' again, but now I will. Thanks for mentioning that you do that, because once you did, I realized what great fun I have keeping a watch out for my new friend. It's strange I didn't plan on it immediately.

"The bird waits on a perch with open lines of sight and swoops down to capture prey"

... yep, the above paragraph is from your link Ivy, and that must be what my little passerine bird was doing: perching out there on my fence post, surrounded by trees, but open enough for a clear view., waiting to pounce on something to eat. My appearing there may have caused her to lose her lunch. (dang... I hope not)

Carol, I agree about taking a manual BP becoming a lost art in the hosp. John's and my doctor is the chief of medicine at the Univ hosp. When we have our appts with him, he always takes our BP manually - even though a technician has done our BP with a machine.

The students who were with me yesterday at the health fair are in their 2nd semester of nursing. They had very little experience with doing BP's before yesterday. One of them, an older student in her 40's, told me she was really nervous about doing BP's b/c she had a hard time hearing the beeps- in fact she asked me "couldn't she go get an electronic one for her to use" - as she had a hard time hearing the beeps. I told her that this was a great experience to get some practice. At the end of the day, all the students were excited- b/c they felt more confident in dong BP's.

jan said...

Most of my day yesterday was spent re-checking BP's when students told me they were not sure of their results.

I know so little about birds, but I love reading what you guys write about the birds you are seeing - and the links you put up.

Chloe, you were up really early this morning. It is 6:36 here as I write, although the post underneath says 5:36. I guess you must have been up about 5:30 or earlier.

Happy Anniversary Ivy and Hubs. I would like to know what you and Hubs would come up with as the keys to a long and successful marriage. I should have given you that assignment before you hit the airport. If you haven't left yet, maybe you and Hubs could discuss it on the plane and let us know.

A friend of mine had an alcohol problem and shared with me some material she got from a Hazelton recovery program on the stages of a relationship. It was many years back and I can't find anything on that on the web. I really liked the stages they discribed. I think I still remember the stages and some of what I remember of the discription. I'm grossly paraphasing there.

Honeymoon, It's all about the one you love. They are perfect. Doesn't last long and the more relationships you have the shorter this stage is.

Enlightement, Ut Oh, they aren't perfect. Wonder what happened to them.

Misery, Am I stuck with this?

Mutual Respect. Where you hope to arrive in your marriage where you can respect one another and live in peace.

It seems most people get out in the second or third stage or at least get stuck in the third stage and live miserably ever after.

Have any thoughts on this Ivy. We need to hear from the voice of experience.

Carol, teaching students to count a baby's pulse is a challenge too. Some students never are able to do it cause its so fast.

jan said...

Carol, I found this on line. Sounds a little like what you are describing.
