It's a great day for a football game, so are you ready....

The countdown begins...just a few hours to go...

Go Jets!

Go Saints!

jan said...

I am not a big football fan, but I will watch this game so I can keep up with you all and the conversation.

Carol, I think there is another time that relationships have problems. When a couple's kids go through the teen years, I have seen so many marriages end at this time. It also may be that this is a time that there is a lot of stress on a relationship that is having problems already and it seems to be the "straw that breaks the camel's back."

Carol said...

I'm ready, I think, Coreen. Do we believe in miracles??? We will need a couple today and I hope your Post will help as much as it did last weekend.

Does the Swamp have enough gris-gris for two more miracle?? You betcha!

Carol said...

I am bringing over my comment to this New Post:

Happy Anniversary Ivy and Hubs. I would like to know what you and Hubs would come up with as the keys to a long and successful marriage. I should have given you that assignment before you hit the airport. If you haven't left yet, maybe you and Hubs could discuss it on the plane and let us know.

A friend of mine had an alcohol problem and shared with me some material she got from a Hazelton recovery program on the stages of a relationship. It was many years back and I can't find anything on that on the web. I really liked the stages they described. I think I still remember the stages and some of what I remember of the description. I'm grossly paraphasing here.

Honeymoon, It's all about the one you love. They are perfect. Doesn't last long and the more relationships you have the shorter this stage is.

Enlightement, Ut Oh, they aren't perfect. Wonder what happened to them.

Misery, Am I stuck with this?

Mutual Respect. Where you hope to arrive in your marriage where you can respect one another and live in peace.

It seems most people get out in the second or third stage or at least get stuck in the third stage and live miserably ever after.

Have any thoughts on this Ivy. We need to hear from the voice of experience.

Great post Coreen!
I feel like we may have a double win today.

Good luck Jets and Saints!!!

"... he always takes our BP manually - even though a technician has done our BP with a machine"

Jan, Yes I was up early this morning. I accomplished a lot more too, so it worked out.

Just curious Jan, when your doctor takes your blood pressure manually, after it's been done electronically by the nurse, is there usually much difference?

Carol said...

Not sure I always trust the electronic Bp machines either. Good idea to check their accuracy by having someone who is really competent taking manual Bps compare both. Also a person can tense up their arm and alter the machine Bp.

With all the loud music young people are subjected to with their ipods, etc, these days, hearing is most likely not as good as it used to be and taking a Bp does require good hearing.

Anonymous said...

Carol, Would tensing the arm raise it or lower it?

Anonymous said...

"Here it is, folks, the dream of a lifetime, a chance for the New Orleans Saints to win their way to the Super Bowl, and do it in front of a full house of delirious Who Dats.

Has there ever been a better story in the march to this championship? " To become the story, New Orleans Saints have to beat the story - Brett Favre

Ha... I was able to find a little gossip, even in a sports article.
Favre's Vikings to face Saints as Colts take on Jets
"The Saints, who have never reached the Super Bowl, have the NFL's most potent scoring attack sparked by Brees and rusher Reggie Bush, whose celebrity girlfriend Kim Kardashian said they might get engaged if the Saints win it all." Favre's Vikings to face Saints as Colts take on Jets

Mary said...

Carol,
You forgot to bring over this post.

Jan said,

"Carol, I found this on line. Sounds a little like what you are describing."

Mary said...

Chloe,
Tensing the arm would make the B/P read higher. I've actually had patients purposely tense their arm so the B/P would be up.

Anonymous said...

Coreen, ... sorry, it took me a while to get back here with another cheer for your Jets!

"The Jets are on fire and set to take on the Indianapolis Colts today in the AFC championship game Sunday afternoon.

This is insurrection, New York City-style.

We are Spartacus.

We are Sanchez.

And before us will fall, like a snowflake in winter, the mighty MVP Peyton Manning.

How sweet it shall be." See ya in Miami: Let's go New York Jets, to Super Bowl XLIV

Anonymous said...

Thanks Mary - that's what I was wondering about. I tend to tighten my muscles when I'm nervous, and didn't realize until now that it was probably affecting the results on the electronic method of taking a blood pressure reading.

Thanks for info!

ps .. just curious. Why would anyone want their blood pressure to appear 'higher'?

Mary said...

Chloe,
With the insurance cos. deciding how long a pt. can stay in the hospital, sometimes the pt. isn't quite ready to go home. With an elevated B/P, they can sometimes get another day.

Carol said...

I'm sorry. I was putting together my own recipe for a spinach, 5 pizza cheese plus feta, quiche with crispy bacon sprinkled on top. Waiting to put it in the oven now. No, it's not on my diet but it is a special treat today. It will be my brunch.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Mary. I just couldn't figure out why they'd want it higher. Now with me, all I have to do is 'think' about my pressure going up, and it will.

Carol, that pizza sounds very healthy. You've got to eat something substantial at least once a day, diet or no diet.

... one more link, then I need to scoot:

"The Jets will win if …

They avoid a shootout. Trying to outscore the Colts is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Just like last week against the Chargers, the Jets need to run the ball, play defense and force field goals instead of allowing touchdowns. The Jets want to turn this into a battle of defenses, not a Mark Sanchez-Peyton Manning battle because the Jets won't win it.

The Colts will win if …

They get some sort of ground game going. In their past 11 games, the Colts have rushed for 100 yards once. True, with Peyton Manning, they haven't needed much of a run game. But failure to establish one could prompt the Jets to drop as many as eight into pass coverage. If the Colts can sucker in safeties on play-actions, the field opens for Manning."Indianapolis Colts vs. New York Jets and New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings

Carol said...

That was a good link for relationship information Jan. They ought to make every couple getting married take a course to learn about these stages so they will realize that these stages are normal. They can learn stratigies, early, for getting thru each stage. Fat chance huh.

Carol said...

Not a pizza Chloe, it's a quiche.

Solar said...

Bout time U showed up...I can just see U with you're Jets uniform on...all of it..the cleats, the helmet the ....everything, ditch the protective lower gears...you won't need that.....

I buy and use compression football shorts, and socks..it helps with my sciatica nerve problem....

I really don't like Farve at all, and want the Jets to go to the S. B. and the Same for the Saints....I would love to see either one of these teams win it all......It would be good for the country to talk about these two teams in a way that it could give us all some hope...as it is, I don't see the economy getting any better for yrs to come....so the positive " yes we can" from a team effort could maybe show us the way......

jan said...

The only problem with doing blood pressures at a health fair like yesterday's is that I think the environment drives up the Bp. It seems most of the people I took Bp's on yesterday had some elevation for their age and gender. I had one of the students take my Bp and it definitely was higher than what mine ususally is.

Solar said...

Coreen,

I just looked at the next ten day forecast....Jan, is not going out with a whimper...more snow, and cold weather is on the way....but it is the end of Jan..so,it's all down hill from here....

Let go and find that Gopher and make him give us an early spring...Im getting tired of Don, Carol, Chloe, and Tony, giving us their daily complaints about getting only 65-67 Degrees, Im going to send them some of our weather next week also...

Carol said...

I hope Shockey is doing better. He was limping down the field last week.

Carol said...

Solar, I'm not complaining. The weather is perfect again today. We were supposed to have two days, Tuesday and yesterday, that it was supposed to rain most of the day. That was the early prediction. We might a had a few sprinkles both days. Today is another gift.

Mary said...

Good Luck Jets!!
Good Luck Saints!!
Gotta go cuz I think I heard Carol calling my name. Wow, a spinach quiche and I know it will be good because Carol is a fantastic cook.

jan said...

I think a lot of relationships have problems b/c one or both people in them have had poor role models. I also believe people jump into relationships too soon before they really know who they are and/or who the other person is also. I believe some relationships are doomed to fail from the get-go because of these issues.

When you think about it, its amazing that any relationships make it to the 50 year anniversary. So much going against it.

So, I also want to say Happy Anniversary Ivy and Hubs. I too would love to hear what has made your relationship work.

jan said...

Carol, can you give us your recipe for spinich quiche. I would like to make one too. Sounds delicious.

jan said...

Hi Mary, Thanks for bringing my comment over. I didn't know about the tensing up of the arm and effect on Bp. I will remember that.

Carol said...

Does anyone know which anniversary Ivy and Hubs are celebrating. It can't be their 50th but I couldn't unravel her hint. **fth

jan said...

"Jan, is not going out with a whimper."

Solar, Damn straight! I whimper a lot before I go out :0)

jan said...

I am guessing this is their twenty-fifth.

jan said...

Its a hunch based upon their college age daughter too.

jan said...

carol, I want to forward a message someone sent me with this little 7 y/o boy singing the national anthem at a basketball game. He is amazing. I don't know how to link it - maybe you could. Is it ok to send it to you?

Carol said...

I'm not sure if this is his original quote and would be surprised if it is but Mike Ditka, ESPN, just said

...."yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift, that's why they call it the present."

I had to write that down so I don't forget it. Anyone ever heard that before?

jan said...

Carol, I was able to copy it after all. This little 7 y/o boy is amazing. A good song for the day of a ballgame.

http://video.aol.com/video-detail/7-year-old-sings-national-anthem/40945200

Carol said...

I just tried to google it and evidently I was not the only one impressed by that quote. The question is already on the Net.

jan said...

Carol, I have heard it - buy don't know who said it.

Carol said...

Bet ya can't get thru that Youtube with a tear falling Jan. Patriotism and a young kid combination is always a tear jerker for me.

Carol said...

Today it's more than two football games. It spiritual!

Carol said...

that was supposed to be get thru that Youtube without a tear falling.

Carol said...

Even if they aren't your teams, you feel the passion. Well, at least I think so.

Carol said...

ESPN, Sunday NFL Countdown is really fun today.

jan said...

Carol, a friend of Johns who lives here says today is "All Saints Day" not meaning the religious signficance.

Solar said...

Jan, Funny.!

Carol, Mike Ditka, could never have said that..he had to plagiarize ....from someone with a brain....

Coreen said...

Carol,

Here's a really nice NYT about Drew Brees & NO talk about spirtual connection(Saints, Drew Brees & the City of New Orleans)and I love the picture, 'never surrender'....

ESPN Jet fan in OK was cute....but I will be happy when the game starts....

Oh & Ditka saying something clever & original...not....
Drew Brees & New Orleans

Coreen said...

Solar, wasn't Mike Ditka well liked in Chicago..I don't recall, but as a NY fan, always thought he was a loud mouth...never liked him....

Solar said...

The only way to enjoy a play off game is to wear Jock straps...everyone have em on yet???

Solar said...

When the Bears were in the playoffs we did not let anyone into our club house without wearing a jock strap, or a cup, or something....show "Support" even the wives, and girlfriends wore them on the out side....some guys got real creative....wore bras, girls wore speedos,, jokey shorts....im going wear my speados today....

Solar said...

Coreen,

Ditka was loved here in Chicago..but I didn't like him at all...he took all of the credit from Abe Gibron, his defensive couch at the time....Ditka was, and is a loud mouth...

Carol said...

Are you hungry?

Carol's Quiche

It's ready Mary!

It does sort of look like a pizza Chloe, but it is in a pie crust.

Solar said...

Carol,

If Don doesn't beat me to it....im coming to live at the swamp with U.......

Carol said...

It's nice here today Solar. Would be fun to have a turtle here to watch the game with today. But I will have lots of turtles just a finger's click away.

Neat article Coreen. I enjoyed that Jet's fan in OK piece also. That's when I mentioned how fun the program was.

jan said...

Ok Carol, that is cruel - where is the recipe?? just for the filling. I would buy the crust.

Carol said...

Jan, your darn right in buying the crust. I do also. This is not a restaurant here.

When my frozen pie crust warmed up a little I oiled some alum foil and weighted it down over the pie crust and cooked the pie crust for about 15+ minutes at about 350. When I took the foil off it was brown enough so that I didn't need to cook it any longer. Don't get it too brown.

Mix in a bowl:

2 eggs and an extra egg yolk
3/4 c and a little more milk
a couple of large heaping tablespoons full of low fat sour cream
a small chopped up glove of garlic
a nice hand full and some more of that 5 pizza cheese or any cheese you want, I just kept piling in the cheese until I thought it was enough.
crumbled up feta, a couple of spoonfuls, I could have used more but I was low on feta and needed to save some for my salads. Feta and spinach are such a good combination.
Some ground black pepper to taste.
Mix in lots of washed and chopped up fresh spinach.
I didn't but, adding some chopped up, deseeded jalopenia would have been interesting also. Just thought of that.

After the pie crust has cooled some, I added my custard mix, and cooked at 350 about 25-30 minutes until it looked right. I have one of those small convection ovens.

While the quiche is cooking, I cooked some bacon in the microwave oven until it was crispy.

When the quiche was done, I broke up the crispy bacon and placed on the top. Can skip the bacon if you have a cozy relationship with oinkers, a religious objection to them or if you are a veggie person.

Let the quiche cool for about 10 minutes. Serve with some fruit or fruit juice.

It's hard for me to give a recipe since I just throw in this and that and don't always measure.

Carol said...

I find cooking to be a marriage between art and science ... and self indulgence. Guess that's too many for a marriage, it's a ménage à trois.

Carol said...

Have a question. Why is it only hard for the visiting team to hear the calls in the Super Dome? Wouldn't it be hard for the Saints to also?

Carol said...

Are you ready? And where is that eagle going to land?

Coreen said...

If the eagle is Challenger, he will fly back to his handler...Only have seen Challenger fly
at some special Yankees games, so don't know
if that was him or a different eagle.

Time to watch....

jan said...

Carol, thanks. Just had some lunch at Costco. Will make your quiche for supper.

Carol said...

Mine could have used some salt. I didn't add any because of all the cheeses. But I do like salt more than others do. I've already eaten half the quiche.

Solar said...

That rookie qb for the jets stay's healthy, he is going to be a great one...he is cool under all of that pressure.!!

Solar said...

Don,

WAKE Up, U taking a little afternoon nap again.....thats what all that hot weather will do....or R U skinny dipping at the beach?

don1one said...

That would be mid 70s solar, not 60s.

switched rooms today to something with a southern exposure so i could get more sun. Spent the afternoon at the sunken gardens. It's funny to see all of these plants that are sold as small indoor plants elsewhere all grown up here.

But I am so sore. Between exercising, walking the beach, the gardens today, and now moving into a 3rd floor room. Any one a good masseuse?

I think you just like the tight shorts so you can show off solar.

Nice looking quiche carol, but of course real men.....

I used to make video shorts for my pastor in california. I was doing a video on the secret to a long marriage and for some reason ended up interviewing a bunch of couples that had been married 50+ years. we were just randomly picking couples in a shopping area, so it was pure chance.

Two things I noticed. The men just agreed with what ever the wife wanted. And the couples were brutally honest. Not in a mean way, but they spoke their mind and didn't hold it in.

Obviously, I don't know anything about the subject having been too fast to get caught, but it was interesting to hear. I'll put it up if I can find it.

Coreen said...

Well, it was a great ride while it lasted...

Congratulations to Peyton & his Colts....

jan said...

"The men just agreed with what ever the wife wanted."

Don, I fully believe the above is the key to a successful marriage.

Coreen, I am so sorry about your Jets. John and I got into an argument at the first of the game. He kept saying the NY Giants and I kept repeating its the NY Jets -

jan said...

Don, I would be very interested in the results of your survey with the couples.

Carol said...

Sorry Coreen.

Coreen said...

Thanks guys, Cinderella's coach turned back into a pumpkin...

Carol said...

I'm nervous now.

Solar said...

Coreen, I like what i saw. The Jets will be around all the way next year. Looks like they are healthy and young...

Carol, hang in there and do not go any where near sharp objects...is Mary still with you, or did she just munch on that pizza and took off....

Coreen said...

Solar,

The Jets qb should only get better...& you are right the team hopefully will make its way back
next year...it was really a great run...

But years ago, I would have been just crushed
with the loss...

jan said...

Great to see Chris Allen sing the National Anthem. He is 2009 American Idol and a good old Arkansas boy.

Mary said...

Solar,
I only ate a very small piece of the quiche and stayed for about 1 1/2 hrs. after that. I had to get home before the Saints game started and before it got dark because I can't see very good in the dark.

Coreen,
Sorry bout the Jets.

don1one said...

I mourn your loss coreen. um, saints playing yet?

:)

of course you do jan. I would say the honesty was the most consistent. I think the relationships are a little complex than that, but even in turkey I saw strong lines of delineation in the roles of husband and wife.

Anonymous said...

Sorry about the loss Coreen. You must be proud of them though.

If the Saints come through for you Carol, then hoping to see a nice post about it here in the morning.

This site I'm linking has a nice running post going on for your game right now Carol. They seem to do this on most games, and it probably makes it a lot more fun to have other fans commenting as you're watching it real time: Open Thread: Vikings at Saints

Carol said...

That is two fumbles that the Saints should have been on top of.

Carol said...

Bad call.

Carol said...

Farve has just about had it. Poor guy. Go Saints.

Carol said...

He's looked pretty rough all night, like he needs some Geritol.

Carol said...

Wonder if the anniversary couple has landed?

rezdog said...

I wonder if they frisked the Saints out of the locker room .;-)

Carol said...

Why's that Rez?

Carol said...

Farve's back??

Carol said...

He's like a weeble.

Carol said...

Well finally they pick up one. I guess they have finally learned to recognize a loose ball.

rezdog said...

wWhen I'm in N.O. I always worry about the thugs roaming the streets after dark. I didn't know they all hung out at the Dome.

rezdog said...

Those refs musta been eating some real greasy food at the half and forgot to wash their hands.

Solar said...

Im a nfl fan but this game is a very sloppy one, if it wasn't a playoff game, I would have shut it off, a long time ago...

rezdog said...

Carol, I don't have dog in this race. It's been a good game so far. Prolly be better than the Super Bowl whomever plays. You know I'm just smarting off with my comments. I hope one of these two win it all cause I'm not a Colts (Manning)fan. However that family is from your pars I think.

Solar said...

The Jets game was fun to watch, this one is getting so that there is a fumble so often, that it is hard to know what is going to happen....

don1one said...

After that one touchdown that was gifted to the Saints even if the vikings lose they win. But if NO loses....

Carol said...

I'm too old for this.

Solar said...

Favre has been beat up pretty good, Might just retire again...but he is on tough hombre.!!

rezdog said...

Solar, It was until it got out of reach. This ones been a nail biter. Still is. Favre blew it.

Coreen said...

Carol, how fast is your heart beating...

But the coin toss gives the Saints a good chance....

No love for Favre from NY Jets country.....

Solar said...

dumbest budwieser commercial that I ever saw just now...but it was for bud-light; so no big deal...

Coreen, I think it stopped a few times.

Rez,

Im with U, I don't like the colts, and im not a big afc fan; so come on field goal range...

Carol said...

This is killing me.

Whoopeeeeeeeeee!

Go figure, an Okie won the game for the Saints.

New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts
2010 super bowl - Super Sunday.

Anonymous said...

... way to go, Carol and Mary!

Carol said...

Well Mary and I are proud also to have our Saints in the Super Bowl. Like I've mentioned before, we have some friendly, happy people down here, some great food, even though it's a little high in fat and salt, some interesting scenery if you like our swamps, but we don't have much else we can brag about. Now we have our Saints and I do think the Universe wanted us to have that win.

I want to say that that Favre really impressed me. Not being a avid football fan, I've never watched him before. That man has a lot of heart. I think if he lost a leg, he would have still hopped back into that game and given it his all.
