Do you feel lucky?

Do you feel lucky?

I believe that in life there is a significant amount of luck and/or karma involved. I see it everywhere. Even in sports. Because of you guys and my Saints, I have watched more football this year. There are good teams, they have the good players and the skills but something else seems to have an influence.

This last weekend I think the Saints were damn lucky. I watched that game carefully. Maybe it was the power of universal desire. I think the Saints definitely have that going for them. We have a lot of people out there pulling for us. Did you hear that the field goal kicker dreamed about that outcome? He woke up his dad that morning telling him that it would come down to him and a 42 yard field goal. His dream was off by only a couple of yards.

What about gambling? I see people and hear about those who seem to always win and those who always don't. That is certainly a game where luck is involved. I try to only go to the casino when I'm feeling lucky. Works about half the time.

In my jail. There are those who every time they drink too many, they end up in jail. Now you know there are a lot of people out there who drive when they have had too many and they never get caught. The people I work with don't have any luck and they continue to be surprised about that. I tell them that they need to get it through their thick skulls that they can't get away with anything so quit trying.

And what influences luck??? Does prayer? Does carrying your lucky charm?? Does believing your lucky?? I don't know. Do you have any ideas??

The Luck Factor

Anonymous said...

Good post Carol! I love that big four leaf clover. That shade of green is one of my favorite.

I think I might say your team was real 'lucky' to get that new coach of theirs. He instilled in them a new attitude, raised their expectations, enthusiasm and confidence - and set higher goals. I know he told them they can do it, and never stopped telling them all season to keep their eye on the ball, and the big prize at the end of the season. He made sure they were all single mindfully focused on the same goal, and no one was willing to settle for less.

You don't play football like that because of luck (only). Try telling those players, 'well you got where you are today from luck'. I don't think they'd agree with you, although they know that luck was involved.

The biggest part of the luck involved was that they were real lucky to get Coach Sean Payton. Always look to the top for success and attitude. And they were real lucky that they were all smart enough to listen and buy into the idea that this would happen.

"This was a goal, we were excited about the win (against Minnesota) because it gives us an opportunity to play next week," Payton said. "When you get into coaching the goal is to someday play in the Super Bowl." New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton says the Super Bowl matchup is fitting

.... notice the key word there: 'goal'.

I saw this story this morning, and it has a picture of the family and children involved on the story also. Solar mentioned the Haiti earthquake babies the other day, and it looks like he isn't the only one out there that would like to help out.

I don't watch TV, so I don't know if they focused in on these happy stories along with all the rest, but I did enjoy seeing this one. Its so uplifting to see the kind of people that we have in our country. Giving, caring, empathetic and generous people, with lots of love to spread around.

Girls’ Rescue From Haiti Expands Family by Two
"Desperate for food and water, Bettania, 7, and Dieunette, 2, were among 53 children whisked out of the ruins of their group home in Port-au-Prince on Jan. 19 in a high-profile rescue made possible by the easing of immigration requirements between the United States and Haiti.

“I knew God would find a way to bring them home, but who would have thought like this, through a catastrophic disaster?” said Kristin Heaton, their 49-year-old adoptive mother. “Can you hear them giggling away? It doesn’t feel real.”

Carol,

I don't think that luck has anything to do with anything. What I do think that comes into play is Mathematics, and timing, and taking the risks that are involved in making your own luck.!!

The physical risk that these football players take are tremendous...what if Favre, was hit in a way that he couldn't walk anymore? just the right timing, the right force, and the right placement of his body at impact, would have had a play in it...and for all of those things to happen, they would have to happen all at the same time.....the math was on his side this time...his body is telling him to retire, he is using bad math when he keeps entering the football field imo.??

What happens to the opposing team, did they have bad luck? No I think that their timing was off, that one player was wide open for the vikings, and Favre didn't pass the ball to him, he failed b/c his timing was off.

Same would go for "Miracles" Out of 300 people on a plane only one survives...they call this a miracle?? everything in that surviving persons timing of the crash was mathematically in line,...speed, impact, objects of protection, etc,...

This living person should be made the Pope if that is a real miracle..doesn't that qualify her to be the Pope??

The lottery, and gambling is the only place that math is recognized, not too much luck if you win.....

Coreen said...

Not sure what is luck, if there is such a thing. To me, it is a person's personal belief
that what happened was because of random chances, good or bad.

Luck is an intangible that can be invoked for
so many circumstances...

As far as gambling endeavors, though I do not
know for sure, isn't the 'winning' calculated
as Solar says mathematically, by the devices
used for gambling...

But then again, is it luck, since if you don't play you have no chance of winning...

A ponder for the ages & one that likely is not subject to proving....believe it or not, your
choice....

Chloe,

Congratulations on a 36 year marriage...

You and your spouse have obviously learned to
communicate and respect each other...an accomplishment today, when so many just give up
& walk away.

And Chloe, no surprise why you would love my

I love all of Monet's works...and stumbled upon
some of the pics when I was looking for something else & stored them....

When I ran the morale club in my squadron of about 600 people, I used to notice a funny thing at the party prize drawings.

Certain managers tended to win year after year. I know the drawings were legit, I ran them and didn't particularly like those managers. But i could put money on the fact their names would be drawn every year.

I always wondered if it wasn't their sense of confidence somehow affecting things. As successful managers they were very sure of themselves. And well, you know what i think of the physical world.

Thanks for linking that idol story too. I love it when we put a little of the entertainment news into the mix here. I'm sure Ellen will be great for the show. She's good at whatever she does, and she is so funny.

Actually Don, I don't. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to hear your thoughts regarding the physical world. I just love hearing everyone's ideas and takes on these things. Gives us more to ponder.

Maybe I've missed some of your posts - if so, I apologize, but I don't remember you saying much about it.

Coreen,
Colbert went after your man Harold pretty good last night for flip-flopping on issues between news shows.

Chloe, solar and I have gone back and forth on this a lot. The atoms in a molecule are spaced so far apart that there's no good reason we don't fall through 'solid' objects. And it now seems like all particles everywhere are somehow linked.

So I think either our brains can affect matter or matter isn't real, just a concept in our minds.

Coreen said...

Don,

Do not watch Colbert, find him completely unfunny....but if he is going after Harold Ford & I would guess its for the gay marriage/
pro life comments, neither of those items would
be of particular import in my consideration of whether he should be a senator...Harold
is what Obama people would probably consider
a blue dog...I call him a realist....and if
he is really going to run, I would guess, that
both Bill & Hill are in his corner, along with
Bloomberg....& more NY dems will align themselves with him if they see a chance he can win the primary...

It's been a while since I took the time to find out what is new, cos it requires a lot of reading, and...there is so much to read, and keep up with, that it is i possible.....unless all U do is just kick back, look out the window, and type all day...

Mentioning Harold Ford, want to ask a couple of questions, not to argue but interested in
what people may think elsewhere.

Do you consider Obama to be left of center,
moderate/center, or right/center in his actions
to date? Lately his own are accusing him of being center or center right, not holding to their image of him, so I wonder what others think.

And in dealings with people, do you find that they are interested in the various political
issues that are expressed in places like tm,
or just more concerned with their personal
lives, work, family, having $ to care for them,
a little extra to enjoy life, & not particularly concerned with who is running things, so long as the govt doesn't keep taxing
them to provide for others, while they and theirs are doing with less & less.

I find that most people do not bring up any of
the issues like at tm& if for some reason, they mention their opinions, they are not even
remotely similar to the views expressed at tm.

... btw, I have to wait 'til the angle of the sun is right. That's the key. So I think I'll probably decide to at the end of February or beginning March.

I have to be back there before the hummers make their return trip home. So I guess I'd better look up their flight schedule pretty soon, so my feeder is on full and ready to go.

Anonymous said...

"Im going with our brains effect matter"

..me too.

Anonymous said...

Coreen, The opinions at TM are pretty narrow. I don't think most people want to get that mixed up in the details. They just want the politicians to tell the truth, and look out for the people they're representing. They want them to do their job.

Like you said, they've got their own lives to worry about. Most can't spend the day worrying about how Washington does their day to day business. At the same time, they know when things are going well, and don't like to be treated like they're stupid.

don1one said...

We only got two hummer males last year chloe. they kept battling over the feeder, so I put another one up on the other side of the house. It was impossible for one bird to cover both.

I don't know anything about Ford other than hearing him in interviews. i haven't read his policy positions.

I think Obama is really moderate/center, but the right keeps trying to make him liberal by thinking it so. He told the whole world that he was going to increase operations in Afghanistan, and now they're surprised by it. He was never as staunch on HCR as McCain and Clinton, and yet now the left feels betrayed because he didn't come out behind single payer.

The only move he's made that's really surprised me is putting Wall St insiders in charge of the Treasury. I think Rahm is encouraging him to court banks for the donations. Despite all of the talk of internet donations, most of his campaign ran on deep pocket contributers just like everyone else.

Only old people really care most of the time though. They're too busy to spend this much time tracking politics. TM is like peeing in black slacks, it may give you a warm feeling but no one really notices.

Coreen said...

Don, does that mean we would be considered 'political junkies' because we
know the minutiae? And that we are old, as well....

Solar said...

Chloe,

They are stupid, and should be treated as such...how did they let all of the politicians of both parties get to where they are now....I have heard that they are to busy getting food on the table, and don't have enough time to get an education of how politics works....bs, they have the time for sports watching, bars, movies, etc, etc, this is just like doing your home work, if you don't do it, you don't have a clue and will not get a passing grade...in these modern times, there is not excuse, and the poorer you are the more, that you need to get a clue as to what is happening....ignorance is what the politicians depend on, and they are always pleased....

Solar said...

Obama,

Anonymous said...

"....ignorance is what the politicians depend on, and they are always pleased"

How so Solar? The so called 'smart' ones that supposedly know what's going on, followed all the details on a daily basis and fell for it all when Obama, and other politicians, campaigned too. The media fell for it all, for gods sake. Most of the political junkies fell for it, including those at TM. What exactly is the little guy supposed to do? They pay their taxes, watch the news (and unfortunately believe it) and do the best they can. I'm surprised that you don't blame big money, because that's where the blame belongs.

This is why Im against people getting their new for the late night clowns...the Colberts, the J. Stewarts, the J. But honestly the political class could care less about me having to work to keep paying, that is the disconnect that is getting
bigger & bigger...

I'm not actually a political junky, believe it or not. I started watching politics more when Bush screwed up and invaded Afghanistan. I spend very little time listening to news now. i roam the headlines, that's about it.

I think the corporations, meaning the overpaid CEOs, are pretty much taking over the country. Scream as much as we want, nothing is going to change that because they choose who gets nominated in the first place.

Younger people have a life and are on information overload, and politics is the least interesting. As we get older, family leaves, we have more free time, and some of us trend to social groups that are also interested in politics trying to make up for the sins of our youth.

Obama was different in how many young people were mobilized and worked to get out the vote. I had teens knocking on my door about voting until the polls closed. I think they had been mobilized by Howard Dean and became disillusioned when the Dean scream was used by the media to torpedo his campaign.

It will be interesting to see if they become disappointed by Obama, or turn out for his re-election.

But personally, I'm still looking for that '3rd' world country that is outperforming the US in health care, education, green jobs, and civil liberties.

In history, we were taught about General Custard, and his last famous stand....I found it very interesting, and went to the library to read more about him...as it turned out..it was just a lot of false information...the teacher Mr Pagliero, told me to shut up...and what was taught in the school books is what mattered...

ps, The people at tm are also a little late about all of this....they did not listen to the independents months and months ago, Coreen U were alway's linking about the mortgage problems, the lack of the promises not kept about Judges being able to help with the mortgae problems...

I kept talking about what they are talking about now.....there is no reason for me to go over there and say that I told U so...and please, that is not what im doing here....but it just pisses me off that the conversations over there, sometimes are just as late as the news outlets...we should have had this Stimulus talks, as soon as Bush, and Obama put the Tarp, and the S. $ out there.....we are not paying attention to it, when we should...a year later, is to late...

To answer Chloe, I'm happiest when I'm building. Florida will let me do that year round and there are plenty of jobs down here. I refuse to work for defense contractors and that's all that's available around my home in NC. I'll miss the $400/month mortgage payment though.

Do you think the stimulus money going to big contractors is nationwide or just Illinois? I would imagine it's a lot easier for them putting out projects that are too big for smaller contractors to take, less paperwork.

I don't know what to call it but IMHO it is either luck, Karma, blessings, or something.

We weren't all created equal. BS. Some of us came into this world with a wonderful, finacially well off family, all our body parts intact, born in a wonderful place, one being the USA, born with the potential for a higher IQ, nutured properly, better looking, etc. Some got a few of these and some got nada. Is it equally easy for people from both extremes or those inbetween to achieve the same thing???

Can't go with math or statistics because even though statistically if you flip a coin, there is a 50/50 chance of getting either heads or tails with each flip, but if I'm flipping for money and I flip the coin 5 times and get heads, a winner every time, what is that?

And Don, like you, I have witnessed those people who seem to, more often, win things when playing games of chance. And like you, I noticed that they aren't usually people who I feel are more deserving. What's that?

And if I'm in that one seat on the plane that survives the crash, I'm getting off that plane and thanking God. As long as the plane didn't land in the middle of the ocean, in the middle of nowhere with no chance of rescue. Then I would probably feel like I was the unlucky one.

I had a patient yesterday who came in to my office. He and his wife were both drunk, neither were wearing their seat belts, he was driving, he went off the road and his wife was killed. He was in grief and wondering why he was the lucky one who survived.

I told him, that both of them were drunk, both were not wearing their seat belts and both knew better. She died and now he has to live with that guilt, raise their 4 children without a partner, 2 were hers from a previous marriage, and face a possible prison sentence. I told him that I didn't think he was exactly the lucky one.

Im trying to get into the big biz of bridge building, have everything in place, and the banks have said ok, now trying to talk to a big bridge builder to joint venture...but from another state....if this all goes right, it will be because of getting into the fed, and state business, and have some connections, but what about all of those mid-size corps that can't get any work, and are not qualified to do government work.....the large projects, simply are not helping the common man...just more of the same....sure you see a lot of road work, but for the ones that didn't even need it...they had all the work, that they could handle already...trust me I know.!

Still going thru the comments. That may take all night. I do love Stephen Colbert. I love his satire. He makes some very good points with it. He's gotten better and better over time.

I used to like Harold Ford but his connection with Wallstreet makes me uncomfortable. ("Ford has joined the financial services firm Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a vice chairman and senior policy advisor".) Why do they put these politicians in these positions? When you have had these jobs with big financial firms then whose your daddy? I know they all have to make money but those connections make me nervous. Many come with a price.

In order to really understand and enjoy Colbert and Stewart, one must keep up with the news and politics. I think they both help to encourage young people to learn more. And they so successfully point out just how dumb politics really is. They do their homework. They go back and point all the inconsistancies and all the bullshit, which is something the MSM doesn't do very often. As much as I try to keep up, I learn things on those programs I didn't know before.

Sometimes the only way I can continue to tolerate politics is to learn to laugh at it.

Looking at the poll about trust in tv news outlets, not surprising that Fox News is
No. 1... when it started there already had been
a spin by the repub. stalwarts that tv news
was left to begin with, so the channel was
set up & marketed to appeal to the disenchanted repub....which it did so successfully & continues to do.

Around here in lots of places that have tv's on. fox news is the one I see on the most often, restaurants, offices, stores....& CT is not the most conservative state...

Also, I think that people's idea of the news as with other venues, is to see/hear what they
already believe, affirmation that their view is the 'right' one....and honestly if you
start to really analyze the slant of tv reports you can pick out the particular slant....

As to the poll itself, since 74% Rep. trust Fox and only 30% Dems. trust fox, not surprising that Fox leads overall 49/37%.

Don, is the yoga conditioning you mentioned the name of a particular video/website...I still like my Gilad, but I have not committed myself so far...We did have yoga tv shows on
some local pbs channels, but not sure if they
are still on....

Carol said...

Don, where is that Yoga conditioning for weight loss? I have really been trying, dropped a lot of calories, increased exercise and don't feel like I'm seeing any progress.

Carol said...

Link is on 9410 on Dish, Solar.

Looked & there seems to be several yoga videos

Yoga Conditioning for weight loss

Coreen said...

The power of tv...tonite Keith Olberman mentioned the shelterbox that Craig & Cbob have set up on tm, & in the short time since, it raised enough for a 4th box....

And tomorrow Craig's on with Imus, I will be surprised if that doesn't get as much if not
more donations to it...

don1one said...

This is the one I'm using. i don't know about the others. Easy breath exercises, stretch, and some balance. It's not weight loss in heavy workout, but by balancing your body.

Carol said...

Coreen, I loved the idea of the Shelter Box for Haiti. It was a great idea since there are no places for people to live and even those who have houses aren't comfortable living in them.

If I had a big family, no camp, was a few years younger with a more tolerant body, I'd want one for myself.

Carol said...

I just pray that the hurricane season gives Haiti a break this year.

Carol said...

I heard on the radio today that they needed one million tents over there.

Coreen said...

I can see you in your tent, with Maggie, typing
away on your laptop.....

It does seem the shelter box is a very good idea & apparently there are many organizations
gathering funds to get them to Haiti...

Never heard of it before Bob put it up at tm, &
the power of TV is just amazing. And TM did a pretty good job by itself with the donations as well...

Coreen said...

Oh, pretty sure that Keith Olbermann's show is
rerun at 10 p.m, if anyone wants to catch the
shelter box piece....

Solar said...

The Box shelter is a great idea.!! The thing is that he drove me off the blog, he said that if we did not donate, we did not need to blog anymore. I explained just before he posted that, that me and my workers had donated 1,000 dollars, and i even donated to a Spanish telethon for Haiti...I felt strong armed by it all.....

don1one said...

There are lots of versions of the shelter box.

After the Northridge quake we spent a few days outside, I know people that wouldn't go back inside for weeks. Of course, I had a waterbed, and the aftershocks kept hitting at 4 am.

With the change in weather patterns at least a small version is probably a good idea anywhere. Sealed and buried, but somewhere you can get to easily. They just had a tornado touch down north of tampa last week. In January.

Some of the more advanced planners used to take 55 gal barrels, fill them with inert gases and seal them.

Solar said...

The shelter boxes, were already there from England...he ( C-Bob)said, but he wanted us to get our own to him

don1one said...

I'm with you solar. I have my favorite organizations to donate to, and they may not be the same. I especially don't like the Red Cross. They're constantly getting caught redirecting funds.

Carol said...

I have a lot of fond memories of all the tents of my youth starting with my two man pup tent with no floor, working up to a 4 man umbrella tent that had a few parts missing but my camping buddy and I made modifications. That was the tent of my teenage years. Then it was a very large family tent, my grad school tent. Jan spent some time in that one with at least one of her kids. I also taught two of my grad school instructors the art of camping and white water canoeing.

I went back down to a pack tent with my back packing gear. That was early years of teaching. It traveled in Colorado, Arkansas to the Smokey Mountains.

Then a 26 foot pull travel trailer that I sold shortly after I got my camp. I did work my way up the camping ladder.

Solar said...

Don,

Im going to think about what Craig did. He is a great guy but I think that he got too emotionally involved in doing a good deed....and please don't get me wrong..it is a great thing that he did..but he could have asked for volunteers, not give an ultimatum, I don't like to be pushed, I tend to push back a little harder than pushed...I can't say no to anything if asked the right way, and not feel forced into it.

I take this as a study of a Liberal do what is right, and trying to force the rest of the world to do the same, but only in the way that liberals say that it should be done.....he forgot the independents once again.......The rush to do good sometimes is not the best way, and sometimes have negative effects.....that is why I like to say the yes we need large corporations doing well, they deserve to make a very good $ but not to the point were we are slaves to them....and at the same time..the other ism..altruism also a good thing, but not give alway's that don't do any good, and doesn't encourage people to work...now we need the job tho.....just saying...

"I felt strong armed by it all....."

I've felt that way about the site myself for a while now Solar. I feel like he's always peddling something.

Carol said...

I decided against the Red Cross myself. I went with C-Bobs Shelter Box and am waiting to see what might be another a good idea. This disaster will be of long duration so there is plenty of time to wait for another good option.

Haiti has been a disaster way before this earthquake hit. The earthquake, as horrific as it was, is an opportunity for some improvements to come to that country. The world can unite to help improve instead of distroy a country.

I heard this morning on NPR that things in some of the areas where the tsunami hit are in better shape than they were before the tsunami hit.

Anonymous said...

Don, I just ordered that yoga DVD you linked. They ship for free (Fedex 2 day) and there's no tax. A great deal. Thanks for mentioning it. It looks like it would be good for beginners.

Carol said...

Did you see that stretched out pic on C-Bob's donation site? It was our Swamp stretched to go across the page. Even if I hadn't liked the tent idea, I would have felt a little compelled when I saw the Swamp up there.

don1one said...

It's not corporations,it's the people in control that want power. They abuse their power to get their way, which is the same thing Craig did. Absolute power and all of that.

Anonymous said...

Coreen, You've really been keeping me up on what's going on the last few days. You've been my news lady, and I appreciate it.

What you said about Fox being on most of the TVs when you're out and around in Ct. is true here too, lately. It used to be CNN. I know Texas is a conservative state, but still it surprises me. Actually, with all the people that have moved here from many different states the last several years, it's looking a lot different (in the areas I frequent, almost like Ca.) You don't see any cowboys around here any more. :)

Anonymous said...

"They abuse their power to get their way, w"

I really don't like being strong armed by anyone.

Carol said...

Fox is popular here too.

Solar said...

Carol,

I think that Haiti will be far better off after this..investments will be made now...but it did cost some lives....

Chloe, C-Bob is doing a good thing, but he is not the only one with a plan to help those that need it....he must have a lot of hippie left in him...he seems to want to save the world....with his global warming alerts, and his need to cry the sky is falling...he is right, and wrong...there is a lot of cyclical weather that happens all of the time...we are pushing it forward a little, with our emissions and all, but not like he makes it out to be.

The same goes for our financial mess.....they scared the hell out of us...they said that the whole world would collapse......now it just might b/c of what they did...I don't think that we had to bail out anyone at all....

Anonymous said...

Yeah Solar, the bailout sounded like a good idea to begin with, but who did it end up benefiting.

Anonymous said...

"C-Bob is doing a good thing"

I agree, and I thought it was a great idea to showcase it on TM too. But when it just kept going and going, and demands started being made, it wasn't fun anymore.

Coreen said...

I have to go look, I did not realize that the
pic was of your swamp Carol. And yes there was
some guilt tripping going on, Patsi pointed it
out in her direct manner & truth be told I think in the end, there was an expectation that whoever commented needed to donate to be part of the group, but it does go to a good
cause.

don1one said...

I think you'll like it Carol. I've done yoga on and off for years, but it's been quite a while and I didn't have too much trouble with it. I did get a bit warm though. It was just a nice stretch, and i'd done 20 minutes before I realized it.

As I was telling a friend the other day, I think you do stretching to stay young and work out to stay healthy. There's no more bang for the buck than stretching and good breathing.

Anonymous said...

I think stretching is just as important as working out Don. Yoga also fits in to the things we've been talking to here. It is a good form of exercise (although it's not aerobic), but it's also calming.

Coreen said...

The popularity of Fox only confirms to me that most people are more conservative than the so-called main stream media wants to admit.

The bubble that the political elite & their minions live in is so insulated from every day life that they miss what is right there...have to give Murdock & Ailes credit for taping into
that.

I know I found myself watching more of Fox during the primary because of the way Hillary was portrayed on msnbc...& honestly, some of the shows are not so bad...but a little goes a long way....I still do not watch msnbc....

Carol said...

I really doubt that all that bailout was ever really needed to save the economy. It just helped them build up their profits so they could take those offensive bonuses.

I do hope there is some karma. I would love to see them all playing cards right now with Bernie M and watching their back sides in the shower.

Anonymous said...

Karma is built in, I think, Carol.

Solar said...

That is what Ti Chi is all about, staying young, with stretching. I have 6 hrs taped from, beginners ti chi to the more advanced..and all of it very easy to do, and not harmful to back, and joints....the thing right now, is that I still like the strength, and endurance training. I would go and find it, to get the name.if anyone wanted it...

Carol said...

"I know I found myself watching more of Fox during the primary because of the way Hillary was portrayed on msnbc...& honestly, some of the shows are not so bad...but a little goes a long way....I still do not watch msnbc...."

Same here Coreen. I did it as a protest and Shep was my favorite. Couldn't watch any of Hannity and very little of Billo. Sometimes he was amusing.

Anonymous said...

I started watching Fox for the same reason Coreen. I wouldn't even dream of watching MSNBC anymore, and I used to love watching that station.

Anonymous said...

Shep was my favorite too Carol.

Anonymous said...

Solar, does that beginners ti chi come on a DVD too?

Solar said...

Proof to me, that they were just scaring us, when they said that they were all to big to fail....AIG was bailed out, and then JP Morgan was not...JP is pretty damn big..just a matter of connections is all??

Coreen said...

Yes, Bill O'Reilly, truth be told, can be amusing at times, Sean Hannity not so much, but
only in very small doses....

By the way after superbowl we get the winter olympics, & just saw a commercial for believe it or not, a sport I couldn't stop watching last time...Curling...(watching Olbermann to see the rerun of the shelter box piece,it has raised a lot more $ since it was on earlier) I just love those curling events...& so when they start I will be ready....

Anonymous said...

I think they were worried that there would be a big panic if any of these big companies took a dive. It really would be terrible to have something happen, like it did in the 30s.

Anonymous said...

.. oh, Solar, that was responding to your last comment.

don1one said...

I like Radigan on MSNBC, Wolf on CNN, and Shep on Fox. If any one is on more than an hour a day it's just for noise.

I like Tai Chi solar. I started taking lessons from an Lt. that was a power lifter. He was amazing to watch, because meditation is a large component of the moves.

I've seen the all nude Tai Chi, but i don't think the performers were hired for their ability. :)

There's a tai chi center near the motel I'm staying at, I wish I could start. I've done Taekwondo, judo, and kick boxing but none of them sound like fun any more.

Oh and Im glad that Colleen is here helping us understand things, like Pogo say's she is great at doing research....

Coreen said...

Solar, I do not think that the bank fiasco was
just a scare...the world's financial structure was on the edge of catastrophic failure & action needed to be taken, the extent of the bailout itself may be debated, but it was real, unfortunately since wall street who got us into the disaster were the only ones in a position to get us out after the govts shored the banks up, they wound up with a double win,
before & after the debacle....

The failure has been since the bank bailout that those on Main Street have been ignored & ngelected because the masters of the universe
are back on easy street....some things never
change.....

Anonymous said...

Coreen is good at 'everything'. And she already set Pogo straight. Don't start anything here!

Anonymous said...

"masters of the universe"

Ha... ain't that the truth. They pretty much do run the world.

don1one said...

They only run our lives is we let them. Don't play on their terms. We all have a choice.

Coreen said...

Guys, I just try to give some facts about things I may know a little about, don't want to

Elizabeth Warren in on The Daily Show! Another reason I like to watch. Jon often has good guests.

don1one said...

I think she was on Frontline tonight too. Starting to hear people talk of recruiting her for office. Wouldn't that be great?

Carol said...

Oh Solar, JP Morgan/Chase was bailed out alright. They are not good guys. I remind them every time I go to deposit money. I have an anxiety attack every time I go in there also.

It's the bank with the financial adviser who ripped me off by talking me into putting my eggs in the wrongs basket when I told them I had a very bad feeling about it. Then he put it in a high risk mutual fund that he promised was balanced. That dude is nowhere to be found right now.

I have a new financial advisor who promised I am in a absolutely no risk investment. You know what I recently found out? I'm invested in AIG. AIG! I almost had a stroke. I called that lady last week and told her I wanted nothing to do with any investment with any of those letters in their name. I have an appointment next week.

These are the bailout recipients. Study them. Watch them carefully.
Bailout Recipients

Carol said...

Starting to hear talk about Ms. Warren running for office Don? Yeah, we started it here. Our first Swamp endorsed candidate. We're looking for a few honest people. Even one would do as a start.

Ms Warren is the only person who talks about this financial crisis in a language I can understand. She can put it into "Kindergarten Economics". She is the only one who doesn't have smoke coming out of her mouth when she talks. No double talk like Timmy. I almost see her halo.

Watch her on the Daily Show. It's online. Jon also knows how to ask the simple questions.

Those people who screwed us knew exactly what they were doing. Most of these people in the government knew what was going on. If they didn't, they should have. These people who are making these huge bonuses knew exactly what they were doing. And the little guy on the street who shoplifts 50 bucks worth of stuff at Walmart goes to jail. Yes, they do need to be held accountable but so do these crooks stealing a million times more from all of us.

Elizabeth stresses that we write our Senators to fix the problem with the finacial regulations.

Carol said...

Here are a few things Wiki has on Harold Ford Jr. I'm in a hurry this morning so these are only a few things.

"In Congress, Ford supported a ban on benefits for same-sex couples, as well as the Federal Marriage Amendment (which would ban same-sex marriage). He told Democrats they should be more supportive of the Iraq War and criticized Senate Democrats who attempted to filibuster the nomination of Samuel Alito."

"He was one of the few Democrats who voted for the Bankruptcy Bill, and he supported some restrictions on abortion, defining himself as a pro-life candidate, including supporting a ban on partial-birth abortion."

"He supported the Republican effort to intercede in the Terri Schiavo case"

"Ford received a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1996. During his campaign for the House of Representatives, he sat for and failed the Tennessee bar exam, stating that he intends to try again"

Solar said...

Carol,

U R right, J.p. Morgan was bailed out, I was thinking about LeHam Brothers that was allowed to fail. The others were not because the did these mega mergers, and take overs that the government allowed, then they said they were to big to fail.

I think what the could have done to save the tax payers, was to nationalize all of these corps, and then break them up.

the could have auctioned them after they were in much smaller pieces, and saved a lot of money, but, and here is the big but, the very same people convinced our fearless leaders that we have, and led the fight into convincing the american public, that this would be making the Americans, into socialism......

This is what I mean when I say that we need to educated the public...our leaders did not do this...they chose to keep the "too big" to fail Banks, and ins corps as they were...NOTHING...has changed, and this is what convinces me that it was not necessary to do what we did...I don't believe for a minuet that they would have let us fall into another great depression....it was a very big scare tactic. I think about it, and can not see the self sacrifice that they would have made, by making us go into a great depression...they would have nationalize the banks, and kept us safe from these too big to fail corps,.......Not too many things that I won't have any room for change...but this is one of them.......nothing has changed, and that was planned.....all of it.!!

Solar said...

Sorry, just thinking about how the Big Banks were allowed to borrow our money at 1/4% and then did nothing for the American people that they borrowed it from....

What makes me feel like ( another thing) we should have let them all fall down, and nationalized them, is what they did with this loan...they didn't lend money out, they paid off their own 8% loans with our money...and then with all of that savings, give them selves huge bonusus....

How could they not...they just saved billions of dollars, with out us even knowing about it.....how many people do you think know about this....how they had to give them selves these bonuses cos the money was there to be used...or lose it....what would i do....use it...and suffer public outcry, but I would be 150 mil to the good...who cares about the little guy.....Carol, I have asked freinds and family if they knew this...they did not.! but they did ask, why did our congress, and senate leaders let the banks do this......

don1one said...

bailing out AIG bailed out the banks because aig was insuring the credit default swaps. we bailed out US and foreign banks that had insured their bad notes with aig.

And now the too big to fail banks are even bigger and more failededer.

did you hear timmeh thinks moving our money to small regional banks is a bad idea? Easy to tell which side he's on. We should have done what you said solar and limited foreign bank activity in the us. banks don't produce anything and they're not enabling anything, so right now they have no practical use.

Connecticut voted in joe lieberman, dodd stepped up to keep HCR moving when Kennedy got sick, despite no support from the WH and now they forced him to retire, I'm not sure I'd trust their other choices in politicians Carol.

Solar said...

Don,

Thanks, I haven't done a whole lot of thinking about the foreign banks, and you are right, if we had to bail them out also..what would have stopped us from going national with our banks, and restricting their activity as you say...we could also have picked and chose which banks to help all over the world...what power.!!! and it is only paper, not real at all, but we make money real. now there is a big thought for you.!!What's real?? and what does the earths populations think is real??

Which makes me think about Farmers....we could have fed the world, but they are corps also, and in charge of the real thing that we need to live....food....

Solar said...

Don,

U still around?

don1one said...

Yeah, just trying to not take up the whole conversation.

don1one said...

It's funny. We ship a lot of food overseas. getting that food to the people that need it is the hard part. Greedy rulers and guerrilla groups intercept the food and use it for power or personal gain.

Money only has value when everyone agrees it does. We'd have to go back to the shekel system otherwise. Weighing out our money in silver or gold.

I'm not going to be around too much longer. Body is so warn out from exercising i can't get going. Going out to enjoy sun for a while.

The basic formula for a link it this.
An open tag ('a') with the actual link in an href attribute.
The text that the public sees
the close tag ('/a').

So in it's most primitive form it's.
<a href="http://www.domain.com/page">What I'm calling it</a>

I've used some special characters so you can see the tag and not confuse the browser, so i'm not sure if you can just cut and paste.

Does that help?

When you see 'javascript:name()' it's actually calling a little program for your browser to run. It's not an actual link. You may need to go to that page, then right click and get the real url, or address, of that page.
