Texting for the oldies

Everyone is texting these days and I don’t understand it. It is so much more work to text than to just dial the number and talk to a human being on the other end of the phone. I think people don’t want to talk to a human being anymore. Texting is a form of communication but it often seems to be a way not to communicate. If I’m with a group of people, who could be having some meaningful communication, many are busy with their face down in their cell phones typing a text message. It irritates me.

I don’t text and the only time I did it, I had to have a five year old do it for me, right after she finished programming my cell phone and downloading a ring tone. Even if you don’t text, you must learn the texting language. It has now become main stream, people are using the same language at work to communicate.

If this is all new to you, there are sites that list the abbreviations used for text communication. Since we are going to be stuck with this stuff, we need to make sure that our frequently used phases and saying are included in the texting abbreviations. Look and see if all the sayings you like to use and can still remember are on the list. Don’t fight this stuff people. They say that learning a new language is one of the few ways to grow an old person’s brain. It’s that or learning to play a musical instrument. You choose because our brains are shrinking fast.

I did find one abbreviation that was not on the list I looked at. It is BFE. Now it might not have made the list because it is not politically correct to say something like that but I bet you are familiar with what it stands for and it just means very far away, that is unless you live in BFE.

Do you know of any other abbreviations that should be on the list?

All that talk of beaches. We're just getting into Fall and ya'll are yearning for Spring and Summer again.

I did read the responses at TM. If the kid wanted to say ewwwh, he should writen it that way. I wouldn't have wasted so much time looking up that abbreviation.

And we'll all think positive about your business venture Solar. Best of luck with it.

"I was taught it's the duty of the communicator to assure audience comprehension, not the audience. If a person can't understand me, I haven't made myself clear."

Ivy, we have non-verbal communication but this new stuff is non-communication communication.

Here's one oldie that absolutely does not text.

I don't even like using the cell phone, more often than not its dead in my pocket book! I never remember to charge it.

Texting abbreviations--right--I don't even know
what most of the symbols that some use to signal their humor, etc. when they comment.

Since I am a more verbal person--I like to talk--I find this non-verbal form of communication lacking since you really do not
get a good sense of what another is really about.

You miss the facial expressions, the tone of one's voice, the accent put on a particular phrase or thought, but that's just me.

In many ways the internet has opened the world
wide, but it does reduce the 'personal'
aspect of conversation.

I am glad that it has introduced me to so many
diverse people---like right here---but I still
wonder what each of you sound like, as we
converse.

Brings me to wondering about regional accents--
Do I have an accent, being from the northeast,
probably minimal or so I'm told---definitely not a NY accent, but I wonder Carol, would you
sound like for instance the actors in that Ellen Barkin/Dennis Quaid movie about Louisiana
(I forget its name but it was a pretty good movie---maybe I'll look it up)

And Chloe, she's not a Texan so I have no idea
what she sounds like. And Ivy or Jan(well you know Jan, so that's easy for) have no idea
what their voices would sound like.

Then there's Solar---what would his voice be--I
am totally in the dark on that one.

No real accent here Coreen. When I was young I had my mom's Chicago accent but she lost it after years of being down here and so did I.

I've noticed that if I'm around anyone for a while with a strong accent, I start to pick up their accent. I'm not making fun, it just happens.

Carol said...

I don't remember Jan having any particular accent but I think I remember her pronouncing certain words funny ie warsh for wash. Am I correct Jan? Was that you? Jan's from Oklahoma.

Ivy's not from Alabama, I seem to remember her saying, but I wonder if she has picked up that Alabama accent.

Chloe's was born up north. How do you sound Chloe? Have you picked up the Texas drawl?

And how about you Solar?

Anonymous said...

Carol, That movie was The Big Easy, with Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin. I remember it well, because I liked it so much.

I'm like you, I don't know exactly what I sound like. I talk fast like you, lived in Ca. all my life, so sounded like them. Living here for a long time now, I know I've picked up a little of the local Texas accent (probably), but I don't sound southern. Californian's enunciate all their syllables, and I smooth them out a little more now, especially 'ing' is often 'in'.

Anonymous said...

I probably have more of the southern personality, like you've said you do Carol. I don't talk like them, but I have a lot of the same values, especially when it comes to hospitality.

Carol said...

I went over to the Trail to have a little fun with me. Not me, me but he, me. Mini me.

Oh, and you'd better believe I'm ready for Spring and Summer again. It's crisp and very sunny here today, and I'm enjoying it because of the bright sun. I changed rooms this evening, so I could be next to the window that gets the last of the sun for the day, this time of the year. I'm basking in it at this moment, and enjoying the warmth to it's fullest.

Carol, I don't like using the abbreviations when I blog. It's just as fast for me to type the full word. I do use the OMG, because I feel it may be less offensive to people that don't say it lightly, like I tend to do. I use that expression a lot, every day probably, so when I'm online it comes very naturally when some one says something that surprises me or for whatever other reason.

Anonymous said...

Did you talk to him?

Carol said...

He said Hi.

Anonymous said...

I went over there to look Carol. You treated him with respect. I noticed Bethy was there. She hasn't been around much lately.

Well, I have to go do my dang chores. (I don't know why I say dang here, but never use that word when I talk)

Carol said...

I think I scared mini me off by mentioning Hillary. He'll probably be running against her one day.

Funny, none of us thinks we have a particular
accent & I'll bet that each of us would think
the other did.

Need to get some dinner. Take care.

Remember when I posted about the Scottish kids last month? The older one's classmates named him "most likely to become Prime Minister." I believe he could too. Some kids are just bright like that.

Kids are fine with texting lingo as long as they don't text while driving. I stopped by my hairdresser's today just to make an appointment for next week, and she went off on a tirade about her step-daughter texting while driving...

Carol said...

That texting while driving is very dangerous. It is illegal in most places and I hope they enforce it. Kids have a big enough problem just driving.

Solar said...

Im glad that none of you can describe how you sound too well. I have a lot of fun imagining what you all sound like....

One of you sounds like Bonnie...from Bonnie and Clyde..

Let me think a little and I will come up with how I might sound to you...that is if I can stop talking to myself long enough to listen to me.....me me me me clearing my throat ...mini me...

I wish that I had thought of that...im going to use it and needle him, like I do XR....it took a while for XR to fight back...I bet this kid will do it on the spot. any bets...Natasha...your a betting tall drink of water...ooops.!

Solar said...

I can't even text here in writing form...can you see my stutttter if I were to text.

Carol said...

He already has Solar. I remember when I was young I used to debate with some of my parent's friends. Dad would throw me out of the room, especially when I was winning.

Solar said...

I never discussed politics with older people. I did listen to them a lot when they talked about it tho..I found out early that if I just answered when I was asked a question, that I learned more.

I could always tell who the bs'r s where this way..and to what degree. I did love to hear about old family story's from anyone...my family never ever talked about the past...Im just finding out the details of who my Fathers, and Mothers real life story's...incredible to say the least..and the reason that Mom brought us here to the U. S.

Carol said...

Care to share Solar?

Solar said...

Not at this time. Im still on that quest...

Solar said...

Some things I just found out about just this week..it was that little known...

I meant that it took a while for XR to fight back with me, in a razzing way,he was very serious there for sometime. Not Sally she was a smart....right away.!

Coreen, I just realized you were the one wondering about that Louisiana movie (I thought it was Carol for some reason).

What you said about being a verbal person, I guess you mean you depend a lot on peoples emphasis and mannerisms. I think I get a real good feeling for who people are when they are blogging long enough to get to know them. You have to work a little harder getting across what they're trying to say, but I think it gives us a chance to think about and consolidate our ideas.

I agree with you, that meanings can change when you don't get the cues and tone you'd get in person, but once I know some as well as I know them on this site, I think I read those things into what they say anyway, because you actually get to know their personality. That's what's nice about a small group like this.

Some of the people on line are just as real to me as the people I know in person. So maybe we do have to work a little harder getting across what we're trying to say, and it is a different experience than being face to face with someone, but it works.

I don't know what spelling reform advocate Ed Rondthaler thought about texting lingo, but he sure believed we could do a better job with plain old English. Mr. Rondthaler died in August at the age of 104. Here he is in a video he made at the age of 102 to promote his campaign for "smarter English."

That was a very cute video Ivy. And Mr. Rondthaler (I assume it's his name is pronounced the same way it's spelled :) was a very clever man. It's a wonder we can ever learn to spell, with the many inconsistencies in the English language.

Solar, Who's Bonnie?

jan said...

I don't think I have an accent. When teaching a new class, by the 3rd or 4th week someone will ask me where I am from. I have lived all over the southwest and Montana and Argentina. When I hear my family who live in OK talk, they sound different to me.

Carol, I say wash - not Warsh - I remember that Marguerite H. used to say warsh and winder. I don't remember you having any type of accent. My husband is from Arkansas and he definitely has an accent. He has a tough time understanding people here especially those who have Spanish as a first language.

I loved the movie, The Big Easy - one of my favorites.

Hugh Laurie who plays House - the TV show - was on Jay Leno recently - he is English. His voice was so different from the voice and accent he uses on House. I was completly surprised. Did not expect to hear an Englishman.

I know what Carol sounds like - at least what I remember from 30 years ago. Because Ivy lives in Alabama I picture hearing a very southern accent - yet I think that is not where she is from. Chloe has lived in Calif so I picture her sounding like people I know from Calif. Solar and Colleen, you are a mystery. I don't know anyone from Connecticut or Illinois.

jan said...

"I have a lot of fun imagining what you all sound like...."

Solar, I agree, it is fun to imagine what people sound like.

I have an old friend from Boston who says - likes to call me to hear my accent -

jan said...

Ivy, tried to play Ed Rondthaler's video - would not play on my computer - its a pretty old one. I even went in and pulled up the site on my own and would not play. Oh Well, what an interesting fellow. Lived a long life.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I am like Carol in absorbing what I hear around me and mirroring it back. I wouldn't know what to call it. Even the short time I was in the UK, I could hear myself picking up some of their speaking patterns. I got their way of saying "Oh, sorry" down pretty well.

Even voices are genetic. My daughter and I started sounding almost identical when she got into high school. Sometimes she has to interrupt her dad to make sure he knows he's not talking to me.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Did you go on You Tube to look for it?

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Maybe this will play for you: Ed Rondthaler on You Tube

That was a cool video Ivy. I couldn't get the first one to work either.

Ivy Green said...

Ed Rondthaler spent most of his long life living in New York. But listening to him on the video, he didn't sound anything like what I think is a New York accent. Then when I read his bio, and read he was raised in North Carolina, I said, aha, that was the accent he kept throughout his life.

jan said...

Ivy, thank you. Yes, I got it this time. I was over on TM seeing what all the chatter is about. I am understanding more as I go into that blog. Not nearly as much fun as Carol's Southern Spice.

Mr Rondthaler was something - a really neat video.

Ivy Green said...

Really big game tomorrow. Roll Tide.

jan said...

Ivy, my sister and I sounded alike on the phone and we did not live close to each other for 30 years. I agree with you, I think there is something genetic about voice sounds. When I hear myself on audio - it is like listening to my sister's voice. This was not true of my mother's and my voice or my mother's and sister's voice.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Can't always keep up with the flow of witty repartee on TM, but I learn amazing new stuff every day. It has expanded my universe. And that's where Carol found us! Plus I am a real fan of Craig Crawford.

We'll miss you, Jan, but you have a great weekend.

jan said...

Ivy, A good way to look at this (repartee on TM). I do see that all of you comment on TM. I sometimes scrolled down just to find comments from each of you. When I found one, I thought "hey, I know that person."

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
One of these days, you will respond to one of us, and we will answer you back. That way you can "get your feet wet." I started by only commenting to Craig - then one day he answered!

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
You have to go through an "admission process" with Craig before your posts will appear. He had to start screening because of trolls and such. Other than that, he doesn't monitor the comments. Craig always makes a point of asking the regulars to welcome a new commenter.

Carol said...

Well, I'm up early. Maybe I can catch someone from France or some other country awake. Anyone awake?

Bonjour, comment allez-vous

Most people like to sleep late on the weekends when they don't have to go to work. I like to get up even earlier, so as not to miss any of my precious time off.

Jan, don't feel like you need to join up at TM. It might not be in your play book. We were drawn there for a reason. Mine could have even been so I could eventually meet these cool people.

I went over to Facebook to look for something Craig had written. I really never spent any time there but enough for you to find me again. Destiny.

I have looked back and thought that maybe my entire nursing career was in preparation for my current job. Could you believe that an entire life time of my career to work at a jail?

Hell, I need everything I have learned and some to do this job at the level I want to do it. It is not like too many care that I care. Would make the same money if I didn't. I'm not sure I would find too many others who would care to do it like I want to do it but it's important to me.

Sometimes I'm slamming my head against a wall trying to explain things to these guys and girls. I think to myself, why am I doing this, not the job, but trying to get things thru their heads, but I just feel I must. It's in the play book.

Carol said...

Now this play book is not revealed to you ahead of time. You only recognize the significance if and when you look back. If you don't look back and analyze, you may never see any significance to the events in your life.

I even think that the year and a half of the torment, from the Board, I went through because I worked for that Doc who got arrested was significant. It was part of the preparation. It helped me to be more empathetic for my inmates. Some are really innocent. I see others, who work at the jail, who seem to feel like when someone is in the joint, that they belong there. Some do. Some are innocent victims.

It's cold in here this morning but not that bad. Low 60s in some rooms. When your used to been hot, it feels cold. I'd get used to it if the weather would stay the same for a while.

You peeps up north. What temp do you keep your houses at up there in the winter when it gets really cold?

Carol said...

Another ponder I have this morning is...do any of your spouses ever complain about the time you spend on your computer? Maggie would like to but I just ignore her. I do try to make sure she has some quality time with me though. I don't spend as much time on this thing as it might seem. I can multitask, run do things and run back up and plunk down a few comments.

Carol said...

Coreen, I love the cajun accents around here. Don't hear the strong one in this area often. Hear more of them in the center of southern La., areas like Lafayette or Ville Platte. Not too many people in those movies ever get it right. They just sound stupid.

When I was working at this pharmacy while going to college, I had more exposure to different people. Some came in with such a strong accent that I couldn't even understand what they were saying and they were speaking English. Made me uncomfortable having to say huh alot.

Just had another memory. A guy came in to our pharmacy for some condoms one day. I went to the pharmacist to ask for his help and he told me to go ask the guy what size he needed. I fell for that one. I was a little naive at that time.

Yahoo says it 46 here this morning, 10 degree colder than Houston. I don't know if I believe that or not though, because my outside thermometer is missing. We are quite a bit north of Houston, so maybe it's the beginning of a front going south and hasn't gotten there yet, but it's going to be 76 today, so that doesn't makes sense either.
We know a guy with a strong cajun accent and I get about half of what he says. We also have a Jamaican friend, and when he gets excited and starts talking real fast, he loses me too. I'm not sure if it's them or me though, because I have trouble understanding most strong accents, for some reason.

Jan, I ran across this site yesterday of beaches in the L.A. area, and forgot to link it. They list lots of links on the left side, and some maps and trails, etc.

Early birds this dreary Saturday morning.

It's 60 today, but foggy, wet & it is supposed
to rain off & on the rest of the day & tonite,
still not sure if the Yankees will play tonite,
that is a problem.

Carol, in the winter, we keep the house between
68-70. Raise it a degree or 2 if its really cold, but can't keep it much higher, it feels
too hot.

Chloe, when it is 70 here it is really perfect,
but those are not easy to come by.

Chloe or Carol, would share some photos, I took
some of the foggy a.m. when I was getting the
papers, but don't want to change Carol's post & it seems that you can not just add them to a comment, orthe latest post, but most start a new post.

Is there a way to just add some without changing the topic?

Carol said...

Change the post Coreen, please. Anytime you want to. You can change it every hour if you want. If you put some pics up and want to add to them, you can go back to your post and edit to add more.

Carol said...

Dang if I didn't get under the covers to huddle up with Maggie to get warm and fall asleep again.

Coreen said...

Carol, I'll try to add some pics, just for
fun.

As far as your feeling cold, I think maybe since you don't have heat as we do here, it may
feel colder because of the dampness. When the
house is heated, it is much drier inside.

Carol said...

Start a new post Coreen and when you get more pics just go back to the post and edit. You can then add more.

Carol said...

Weather says 50 degrees with 100% humidity. That is part of the problem, that 100% humidity. It makes it soak into you bones.

Last week's cool spell got me used to it so that when the temp went back up I was feeling hot at a usually comfortable temp. Then I adjusted back and now the cool again.

Carol said...

How to add more pics to a New Post you have just done. Go to New Post, then click on edit posts. It will give you a list. Click on edit to your post. Then just add the pics. If you want them below the previous pics you have up just click on the new pic you added and drag it down the page. Be patient, it will work. You may have to keep trying to drag it down the page.

Thought I would say hi. it is 7:42 and it is 42 degrees F. outside. We turned our heat on for 1st time yesterday. Our daytime temps are in low 60's and sunny.

Carol, I don't plan to try and comment on TM (at this time). It is just interesting to see what they are talking about. I am too wordy and not as interested in the day to day stuff going on in DC.

I think our connecting again b/c I went over to the McNeese site and you were on facebook was about as synchronistic as anything else that has happened to me in recent years. I have wanted to reconnect with you for years- but had given up.

Chloe, thanks for the link to beaches. They look amazing. We will definitely check some of these out when I can get some time off.

Before moving to Louisiana, we lived in Argentina and had several close friends there from LC. You remember that Bob was with an oil co. there (please don't throw virtual tomatoes at me). Some of them who were from other parts of the country and had moved to LC to work said that Louisiana was like moving to another country. I remember when we moved there - I thought to myself how true that was - both with the culture (Acadiana) and the politics.

The same is true for living here in NM. Anglos are in the minority here - those with Hispanic background are the majority and of course the Indian American population is about 10-12%. I learned recently that the Hispanics who live in the Northern parts of NM are originally from Spain and those living in more southern areas are more often from Mexico. Most of these have been here for generations. Anglos are really the newcomers to NM.
