Harry

This is not a good picture of Harry, the Great Blue Heron, but it's the best I can get right now. Harry was across the river fishing yesterday. I had to put my little digital on full zoom and try to balance it on the front porch rail to keep it still enough so the picture wouldn't be a total blur. I will keep waiting for Harry to get closer.

I was chasing Ellen, the Great White Egret or Great Egret, in my boat a couple of weeks ago hoping she would stop so I could photograph her but she must have been on a mission. We have more of the the Great White Egrets here than the Great Blue Herons.

These are reference photos. You must read the comments to understand their meaning.

Peeps, don't let this post keep you from adding a new post. Just wanted to drop these two pics here

These are lovely photos. Good lead in for lots of bird posts tomorrow. I always have plenty of those. May even have some more Scottish birds to talk about.

Carol said...

Thanks Ivy, but lovely photos, that's kind of a stretch. If you haven't already figured it out, you need to click on the second pic to blow it up and look at that white dot on the right. That's Ellen. OK, I'll do better.

Hey, yesterday my nurse friend Randal came over and mentioned that he looked at the blog. Everyone, say hi Randal, just in case he comes back.

Solar, he's a guy. Maybe he will talk with you. He is also one of those deep thinkers, another ponderer. He never lets anything get to him. If he worries, you'd never know it. He's lucky, because he expects good luck.

He's a musician, the singer in a band Ivy. The band doesn't play that much anymore because it's just too much work to get set up and break it all down again when you got a job and you aren't a Spring chicken anymore.

He plays the piano and harmonica. He may even play the guitar but I'm not sure. He has several. He records his own music.

He is also a nurse, the nurse who saved my little finger from the bad catfish hook that tried to take it. You missed that story Jan. Whew!.

Life can give me some interesting stories to tell. I appreciate that I have some interesting things to write about but I would prefer they are not painful or costly in some other way.

Carol said...

Ivy, I sure have learned a lot about birds. I'm glad you got us going in that direction. That site that Chloe found for us on hummingbirds was sooo interesting. It said that they remember people. Now, how do they know that? Does someone speak hummingbird or somethin? I guess I will have to make sure I'm on my best behavior when the birds are watching. It certainly makes my post of Whoooo's watching who, more significant.

Good morning early birds.

Just wanted to stop by & let you know that I
do check out what is happening here, even though I have not been joining in the conversation.

Carol, you have successfully created a sanctuary where you can stop by & just hang out.

The photos you all have posted compliment
the laid back, welcoming feeling your place
has become.

Now I am going to try to hopefully get this to post. Coreen

Nice to see you drop by Coreen. Drop in any time and you are welcome to add a post if you would like.

I just finished cleaning up in the kitchen. Now I know why guys like to BBQ. It's because it's the easy job. Cleaning up afterwards is the tough job. Unfortunately, I have to do both.

BBQ has a way of sticking to anything it comes in contact with, your teeth, under you fingernails, everywhere it traveled. I found the evidence everywhere. Since I still have leftovers, I will be working on this for a while still.

Whooo, besides me here, tunes in to the Sunday morning show on CBS with Charles Osgood. It's the most interesting show on the tube. They just did a piece on spirituality versus organized religion, a topic that's been on these boards in the past, if I'm not mistaken.

But, the segment I'm really looking forward to is "stone skipping" on the water in Pennsylvania with the inimitable Bill Geist.

http://www.pastoneskipping.com/

Stone Skipping

I always look forward to the Nature scene they play at the closing of every show. Today they've announced it will be "Wild Prairie Grassland Near Thornton, Iowa."

Ivy Green said...

Carol,

"Stone Skipping" sounds like an activity you could organize for our visits to your porch. We wouldn't even have to get out of the chair.

"BILL GEIST: A Stone’s Throw
Franklin, Penn., is the kind of place where people still enjoy the simple pleasures, like skipping stones - and they take their stone-skipping very seriously. In fact, the five-time stone-skipping champion and world record holder hails from Franklin. Russ 'Rock Bottom' Byars holds the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive skips of a stone on water - an incredible 51 skips! He set the record in Franklin, right where the Allegheny River meets French Creek. That is also the location for an annual tournament which draws the best stone-skippers in the land, including our own Bill Geist."

Carol said...

Oh, and to make matters worse, that chopped spinach in my artichoke spinach dip, it also has a way of making the rounds.

Carol said...

Morning Ivy. Sorry, but you must get out of your chair to skip a stone. The wind up is very important. Mine can be so intense that I could end up landing in the water myself.

That reminds me of my net throwing experience. They have these cast nets that are used for catching bait fish or shrimp. I was staying down at a friend's camp just south of here on a large salt water lake. I bought a 6 foot cast net. I didn't have the strengh required to wind up and cast that one out to make a perfect circle. Too big. My cast always ended up looking more like a noodle. Not good for catching anything.

I went back to the store and bought a 4 foot net. Too small. I made a perfect circle but it was not a productive circle. I ended up going back to the store and buying a 5 foot net. That one was just right.

In case you ever need to know how to throw one, here's a youtube. I wish I had this video before I went and bought one.

How to throw a cast net

Carol said...

And Ivy, with stone skipping, I've always been happy if I can get about 6 skips.

Ivy Green said...

Maybe I'll just sit and watch you guys throw the stones and cast the nets. That way I don't have to get up...

Carol said...

Maggie just jumped up from the bed and took a dive under it. I looked at the weather radar and sure enough, there was a red line of bad weather heading our way. She's better than radar.

My last dog was never afraid of rain or storms. The only thing that scared him was when he let out a little gas. He would jump up and run when he farted like he didn't know where that came from. Now Solar, that's a little man talk.

Carol said...

I bet Chloe will be excited. She's going to get the same rainy weather we're getting here.

Wake up Chloe and look out your picture window. "It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring..."

Carol said...

And it's coming your way too Ivy.

Solar said...

Ivy,

Why didn't you wake me up for Charles O. on cbs. I also think that the Sunday am show is very good...I missed this one..which is my favorite subject, one of em anyway...I think that he can inform us more in just the few minuets that he is on a subject than anyone right now....he is what they all should be doing...but they all go for the jokes and the short skirts...

The reason that I missed him is that I had a hard time sleeping last night, I was a little miffed cos I knew that Miz Sally was sleeping just fine, laughing at m e all night...

Carol,
Im comfortable around women cos, I see them as an equal, I started to write something short..but now it's grown a little bit more than I wanted..so I will do a ponder for us...

yes, get that guy-Randal? to come over here, but he better not be like Tony Balony, and be so nice all of the time...we need to shake it up a little..just kidding, Tony is great just as he is...unless he wants to do something about it? Tony where are YOU?

Carol said...

Ivy, I went back to watch your "deer for breakfast" video this morning. They didn't have enough places set for all those deer.

Carol said...

Tony really is a nice guy and I like that about him. He can be tough also but in a nice sort of way.

Solar, you are usually tough in a nice sort of way also unless it calls for something a little more.

Solar said...

Carol,

I don't believe in being a bully, assertive, yes. I have never struck my son Tom in all of his life, yet he knew that he could not get away with anything...nada..he tell's me know (kidding) that he would have preferred a crack, every now and then....

He tell everyone as an example of when he was a kid...I use to give him a time to come in-come home. I allowed his (in my mind) 15 after that time, or he was considered late.

He took advantage of this, and I never said anything...I started to write it down..so when he had a real important place to be on a Saturday evening, I told him that he could not go...I showed him all of the time that he owed me...he was not a happy kid, for a while...but never-almost never late again.

Once when he was about 9 or 10, we were in a bank, where the clerk over paid me by 100 dollars, he was counting along with me, and noticed, I kept the money, and took him aside....I asked if we should keep it..we could buy some stuff for him and for me...

I also told him that the clerk would have to pay the money back, and that it would be taken out of her check, cos she made the mistake...the choice was his to make....he chose to give the money back....I have never had any trouble with him taking anything that did not belong to him....He has also been a witness where I had to defend myself, and my sisters...and knows the difference of being assertive, or mean... I can't do the middle ground, nice, or tough..thanks for noticing...not many do.!, and make the mistake, and take it for weakness.....

Carol said...

That was really cool what you did with your son Solar. Probably one of the most important lessons he learned. So many parents do things that they don't realize that their children are watching. Just little things. They wonder later why their kids lie, cheat or steal but it is what they saw their parents doing in little ways. That's what sets their values for life. Fortunately some kids will overcome it.

Carol said...

There are people who go to their job sites and steal from their own companies. For some reason, I don't think they see it as stealing but it costs companies a lot of money. Some places even search vehicles before their employees leave work because of it.

I felt bad if I left an alcohol pad in my pocket when I left work at the hospital. As a nurse, you have to carry those pads around in your pocket all day so you have them when you need them. I made sure I got it back the next day.

Solar said...

Carol,

As you know, my Father was a little bit of a bully. I used to take my mind to a different place when he was around being one...there is no need to disrespect another human being, until he doesn't deserve your respect...

As a young adult he got into some trouble with the law..just stupid kid stuff, that i did more than once. When they were allow to make a phone call...I could hear his freinds arguing with him, that he should not call me..and to keep things a secrete. He told them that there is no one that he would rather have help from in the whole world...I helped them and never broght it up again...he does the same...

Thats why I posted that post about the Grand Father teaching his little Grand Daughter how to hate blks---White Dog...I asked, made him watch that movie...he was shocked that someone would actually have that kind of hate in their hearts...it is all learned....and if we learned it...we can un-learn it???!!!! later

Carol said...

My older sister had the most influence on me when it came to race relations Solar. She is six years older and when you are young that is like being another adult.

I went and spent time with her when she lived down in Mobile, Alabama. She went away to Scarritt, in Nashville for graduate work after completing her undergrad degree in just 3 years. Mary and I were young when she left home.

It was several years later when she was down in Alabama living with her husband. She was somewhat of a civil rights activist when she was in grad school. I was 16 when I visited that summer and her influence was the strongest on me at that time.

Ivy Green said...

I had many positive influences regarding respect for people of all races (and religions) from both my parents. But one of the earliest and most formative was from my mother's mother, and it involved everybody sitting down together at the same table for meals.

Carol said...

Yes Ivy, being a role model and demonstrating unity is the best of all lessons.

Solar said...

Ivy,

When I was building a house once in Chicago, in a part of town where there are a lot of dead end streets...I found a restaurateur that did not have separate tables...they had 4 large single ones..and the salt and pepper shakers, the napkins, etc were all in the center...

The Idea was that anyone could sit next to some stranger...the food was America, Mexican, and Indian, all good...the owner once told me (showed me a pic that was on the wall) that he was proud of the fact that two of the people that met there...were married....cool huh!

I was on my own since 12, and ate a lot with my freinds family, don't get me wrong...my family did the same things..but it was mainly to get us all to pray for the food that we were given...but our paychecks had nothing to do with it..cos we were given the jobs by a higher power...

My Mother still to this day prays that I have a lot of work...I tell her to also pray for the help to get it done...and to tell the angels that she sends over to watch over me to grab a shovel and stop watching others do the heavy work...she give me a crack if Im anywhere near...which I always am...a little game that we play..

Im pretty gabby today so im going out side to do some work,, and work it off...

Dr. Carol,
Question...conjunctivitis - "pink eye" - if one dog gets it, should I treat them all three? Meg went to the vet and got a cream for it yesterday. Angus is rubbing his eye with his paw now. No sign of it in Lillie, the pup. I'm thinking I should just use the same tube of cream on them all. I wonder if they brought this home a week ago from the kennel?

Carol said...

Ivy, I wouldn't treat until symptoms appear. If you treat when it is not needed then the treatment may not work when it is. Just wait and watch.

Carol said...

Some pink eye is viral and the treatment that is used is an antibiotic that will not treat viruses. It will resolve on it's own.

At the jail I have an advantage over medical practitioners in the "free world". I can always wait, with some infections, until I'm sure an antibiotic is needed. That doesn't work in the "free world" because for one, you may not get your patient back when it is, and for two, they may not want to come back if they don't get a prescription for an antibiotic whether it is needed or not.

Hell, I don't care if my patients aren't happy. I do what's best for them anyway. I don't have to cater to ignorance because I'm not running a business.

Ivy Green said...

Dr. Carol,
We followed your advice. Hauled Angus up on the table for a look, he's got something draining, so he got a squirt of ointment. Little Lillie went up next, she looks clear, so we took a pass for now. Meg's vet visit yesterday cost $61 (more than my co-pay at the internist). I'd like to avoid the same expense again times two if the others need to be seen.

Your patients don't need to worry about office fees and co-pays, do they Carol? But then they've already paid a high price for "admission."

Carol said...

In peeps, viruses, usually adenoviruses are responsible for most of the conjunctivitis, pink eye. It usually last longer than bacterial and more common in Spring and Fall. Often accompanied by upper respiratory symptoms even a little laryngitis. Don't know about dogs.

Solar said...

I think that Chloe got some of it...she has that laryngitis symptom, and.......

Carol said...

Our patients do have to pay a $5 charge if they have the money on their books. If no money, no pay, but it will come out if they do get any money. They even resent that.

When on the streets, most go to the ER where they plan to pay, nada. They expect that health care should cost nothing and be available immediately when needed. Then they don't follow any of the advice.

I do my part to educate them but I can usually tell it's going in one ear and out the other.

Those who have a little bit of money who need health care have to pay thru the nose for it. There is no advantage to having any money to speak of.

One of my nurses went to a urgent care facility the other day. She has insurance but a $500 deductable that she hadn't paid yet. The visit cost $130 and they this idiot Dr. gave her a prescription that cost another $130. It was a long acting muscle relaxer that is relatively new. The same shorter acting drug you have to take every 8 hours cost pennies. She couldn't even get the prescrition filled. A waste of her costly medical visit.

That is so typical of Drs. They don't even consider how much money their patients have to spend or don't give a damn. They just push these high dollar drugs like they are getting cut. Maybe they are???

Carol said...

I know you meant it as a complement Ivy but it's NP Carol. I certainly don't want to impersonate a physician. I'm proud to be a nurse! We are more holistic.

Carol said...

I do see some NP's who try to mimick the practice of physicians. I don't respect them for doing that. I prefer our nursing model for practice.

Carol said...

My Saints are playing the Jets at 3p. I'm not much of a football fan but you wouldn't know it when my NO Saints or LSU is playing. Anyone want to take the Jets?

And Ivy, when LSU plays Alabama we can bet a New Post. The loser will have to put up the New Post. I'll start getting one ready.

Coreen said...

Oh Carol,

"Anyone want to take the Jets?" I will oblige, gladly!

The Jets are not favored, but with the rookie
QB Sanchez, they are starting to look good again.

I go back a long, long time ago with the Jets, to the best there was---one of my all-time sports favs---Joe Namath. And yes, he was by
way of the Crimson Tide.

My true sports love----the New York Yankees,
can not wait until the ALDS starts Wednesday.

Did you just see that one Coreen??

Coreen said...

Oh I sure did!

But there's lots of game left, friend??!!

P.S. Am still having difficulty commenting,
I just can't get the process yet!

Coreen said...

And just so you know the point spread is New Orleans by 7.

Carol said...

I often have to hit post comment twice before it goes thru.

Carol said...

That means we have to win by more than 7?

Coreen said...

Its my inability to sign in to any of the accounts. I'm using google, but sometime it

Carol said...

I know who you are so don't worry about it.

Coreen said...

Only for purposes of betting, Carol,
the Jets would get 7 to start, so if a person
were to take the jets + 7, the saints have already covered the spread (at this point)& the person who bet on the Jets would not win
(if the score holds that the saints score 7 points more than the jets when its over)

I do not bet however, but I know that the Jets
are not favored, so if they were to win it would be an upset.

Carol said...

Man, they screwed up that chance. Should have taken the easy 3 points.

Carol said...

Who dat sez dey gonna beat dem Saints?

Did you see Modern Family last week Coreen. One of the families is a gay guy couple. They adopted a baby and were going to this toddler thing at the day care.

One of the guys was bitching at the other for wearing a shirt that was too flaming. His partner agreed to go change into a polo shirt and said now they will just think we are two golf buddies who decided to adopt a baby. There are some killer lines in that show.

Coreen said...

And Carol, last night I saw that you were
talking about men & their absence thereof.

Think you have had bad luck with guys, I'm
the 'black widow', three of mine (that's right 3) 2 ex's & 1 who was current at the time are dead---really dead. So if you think you have a
bad track record---got you beat!

The last one was an attorney (public defender)
who I had always thought would be around with me well for the forseeable future---& snap he
had a heart attack & died at age 59.

Carol said...

If you need a laugh, and we all do these days, I recommend you watch that show.

Carol said...

Damn Coreen, I'd rather have my problem because I'm really bad at dealing with loss. What is they say? It's better to have never had than to have had and lost.

Coreen said...

Did not see that show Carol. Most nights during baseball season the Yankees rule TV here.

The only comedy I watch regularly is 2 & a 1/2

Coreen, I'm really glad to see you here, but I'm so sorry to hear you have lost three important men in your life. That's enough to really break your heart. 59 is way to young to die.

If you're losing posts Coreen, then it's better to hit preview and sign in when you first get here (unless it has saved your sign in) before you start posting. Make sure you check the save box. I think the only way you can change your user name, is to sign up for another google account, and use it instead. But it looks like you've worked it all out now, anyway.

Carol, its never too late to see where life leads.

Right now, I am back in touch with an old kind of boyfriend, who out of the blue sent me a letter last year. I had lost complete contact with him years ago.

He's been through 2 wives, has 2 grown sons &
is semi-retired--& we are now talking & acting just like we did so very long ago. And truth be told it was because of him that I became a NY Jet fan way back then. The down side is he no longer lives in CT. He lives in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Carol, my apologies for mis-using the title "Doctor." I meant it as a little "lol thing," but you are right, I did also mean it as a mark of recognition and respect in deference to the extraordinary education and training it took for you to achieve your NP. And nurses always have my respect, having been raised by one, actually two, if I count my grandmother.

Carol said...

I knew that Ivy.

A "semi warm-body' in their way Carol? Well, I guess that's one way to put it.

"I went back to watch your "deer for breakfast" video this morning. They didn't have enough places set for all those deer."

I thought about that too Carol. But figured that's all the plates they had. I just know they feed them a larger amount (or leave it out) a little further from the table, at some point. Otherwise, you wouldn't have seen all of them close by, waiting for breakfast. Did you notice the lady gave one of them a piece of her toast. I watched it again too.

Carol, You're right that I enjoyed the little bit of morning rain, but it stopped early today, and now it's just starting up again. And, of course, I love it.

I also saw you mentioned who's watching who (regarding wild life) earlier, and I've been giving that a little thought. I think they see us before we see them, so in reality, we're just looking back at them. So they win. Once in a while we surprise them, but not often.

Loved your photo's Carol. The one with the huge view of the water and sky enlarges so much, that it doesn't all fit on my monitor, so I have to arrow over to get a view of the Egret. Nice shot. Also, You got a nice shot of that Heron. It's interesting to see how birds vary from state to state.

Whew, lot of catching up to do.

Saw part of Zombyland today - it didn't look good to me, so went to the next theatre and saw the new Matt Damon movie, The Informant. I liked it and Matt was great as always. I'm sitting there, in that theater, eating miniature butter fingers, with a large drink, thinking how much I LOVE sitting in a theater, putting my feet up on the seat in front of me (that's why I go early, so it won't be crowded), and watching a good movie on that huge screen in that comfortable, cold theater. It's right there on top of my favorite things to do, to just get away from everything for a couple of hours. Nothing on my mind, except that make believe world up there on that screen. And when there are some good laughs, well then, that's even better. And the laughs were there today.

OK Coreen, I'm starting to feel a little better now. At least for now. Six more minutes to sweat.

Anonymous said...

Remember, it's northwest of Houston. But I guess the weathers about the same anyway.

.. still catching up

"I went back to watch your "deer for breakfast" video this morning. They didn't have enough places set for all those deer."

I thought about that too Carol. But figured that's all the plates they had. I just know they feed them a larger amount (or leave it out) a little further from the table. Otherwise, you wouldn't have seen all of the deer so close by, waiting for breakfast.

Solar said...

Chloe,

Im going to the movies also on Tuesday.....

Anonymous said...

BTW Ivy. I'm sure glad you linked that video.

Carol said...

Solar, how long have you lived in the windy city?

Anonymous said...

What are you going to see?

Coreen said...

Carol,

Looks like the fat lady has started singing,
would be pretty tough for the Jets to come back with 2 td's with just 4+ minutes to go,
so looks like your saints will remain undefeated.

Carol said...

Uh, did you know what the stakes were Coreen? If you lose, you have to do a New Post. You may want to start warming up for that...

Carol said...

And I think the Saints just heard me say that. They want you to do the next post.

Carol said...

Your leaves turning yet? You might want to go outside and snap a pic. That would make a nice post.

Carol said...

As you can see from my post today, it doesn't have to be too complicated. We won't even expect any original poetry for your first post.

Solar said...

On the History Channel they are going to do a whole new series...All New. the Universe-Space-wars..should be nice..I have a 65 inc screen..thinking about getting a 100 inch with front projector

Carol, all of my life, since I was 7, back and forth from Mexico, became a citizen in 80 just in time to vote for Carter, except that I didn't I liked the indies a lot better, and there I stayed, watching the two goof things up, and some little traveling in between, not much,,but will a little later on.

Carol said...

This fat lady is singing now.

Solar, you can join me with the traveling when I retire. I'm gonna check into those Elderhostel tours. They do and go just about everywhere. Usually less expensive. Most are educational.

Coreen said...

Carol,

While I would never not payoff on a bet, you may have to wait a bit, since I am busy trying to finish knitting an angel afghan & a hooded
sweater for a friend's baby christening.

And the leaves have just started to turn here in CT, (maybe 20%) usually Columbus Day week (mid October) is pretty good & I do have lots & lots of trees around my house. I will make a point of getting you some autumn colors photos.

Solar said...

Carol,

Deal. If things go right I just might be do some next year...and be in the south for the next winter, of 2010. We can stop by and capture a pic of the rare Texas bird...the Side, Saddle, Sally bird....haha

Ivy Green said...

"And Ivy, when LSU plays Alabama we can bet a New Post. The loser will have to put up the New Post. I'll start getting one ready."

So, Carol, how this for a bet? When LSU and Alabama play (Nov.7) the "New Post" must be by the loser extolling the virtues of the winning team and its coach?

I'm open to other ideas.

lol

Carol said...

Need better ideas Ivy or our guarterback needs to practice more.

I was just reminded of an old saying..."around the bowl and down the hole, roll tide roll." I like it. It has a nice ring to it.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
How is your hunt for the scissor-tailed flycatcher coming along? Places you might spot it: power or phone lines, stop signs, roadside fences. They may have already left for their winter-grounds (along with my erstwhile hummingbirds), so it might could be you'll have to wait until next spring. In any case, happy birding.

Scissor-Tail

Carol said...

Sure Coreen, we can wait a couple of weeks. Nice touch, using a sweet babies' christening to postpone your payoff. May need to send a post with a pic of that baby and her new outfit. Even be better if you could capture a nice orb in the pic. Orbs like spiritual places.

Ivy Green said...

This is going to get ugly.

lol

Solar said...

All right. Someone grab Coreen and frisk her..I just lost another post...see if she has a virse on her. Never mind she is cool...she is a lunch club member ..a Bullwinklet?

Carol said...

I didn't make that up Ivy. You must blame a friend of mine for telling me that just a few minutes ago. I'd never heard of it before but her timing was perfect.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Some orbs did indeed show up in some of my London photos. Oddly, they were only in the posh restaurants. None in the castles or the ancient stone site. What's up with that?

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
It's no worse than the one we had ourselves a couple years ago. That was "Parole Tide."

lol

Carol said...

"What's up with that?" Well Ivy, I would assume that whoever that orb represented, liked to eat

Ivy Green said...

If any-one's watching 60 Minutes, they're getting ready to show a segment about wildlife migration on the African sub-continent. I think there will be elephants.

Anonymous said...

Ivy, I think they may have already left for the winter (even though it's supposed to be 90 tomorrow, at least when I checked earlier).

I haven't seen the hummers yesterday or today, and it doesn't look like the nectar is going down.

Carol said...

You know Ivy, just before mom died my older sister came down for a visit. Mom was going down fast. She was too with it at all by then. We got a sitter for the afternoon and my sister's and I went to Beaumont, Texas and ate at Joe's Crab Shack. Mom loved that eatery. It was one of her favorites. She'd have died if she knew we went without her. Well we really didn't.

My older sister's husband went with us and took a pic of the three sisters at the restaurant. In one of the pics, right up above our heads, on the ceiling by a big rope was one of the most impressive orbs I've ever seen. It almost had a face in the orb. It was mom and I think she was pissed.

Later I read this article written by someone who worked at a Hospice about traveling before dying. It was how people, just prior to their deaths describe traveling to different places. Yep mom did it and I know what she probably ordered.

Anonymous said...

Solar, You're going south next winter? Smart move, you'll enjoy the weather.

Carol said...

First paragraph, third sentence should read she was not too with it.

Ivy Green said...

The 60 Minutes story had a lot of wildebeests, crocodiles, some elephants...and hot air balloons. They whetted my appetite for Jan's photos.

The current battle over environmental preservation and conservation in Africa resonates of the same story we watched last week by Ken Burns about our own National Parks.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Maybe that was your Mom's "smiley face?" I bet your Mom was pleased that y'all were living well and happy. That's what I like to think I will be wishing for my kids.

Carol said...

Ivy that was about a week before she died. We were all miserable. I think she just wanted to go with us out to eat just one more time. I think her spirit managed to go with us.

That is why I found that article written by the hospital nurse so interesting. She said her patients described traveling to different places while in the bed, dying.

Carol said...

I wish I could find that article. I have it bookmarked on an old laptop.

Carol said...

Crocs on PBS Nature program.

I still have hummers but they do seem to be new ones. They are much thinner than the last. The fat one must have taken off for their migration.

jan said...

Hi folks, boy you all have been chatting away. I don't have any pics to post yet. I am depending on my husb to download them to his computer and he says he is having trouble figuring out how to do it again. His PC crashed a few months ago and he bought a Mac instead and he is trying to work through its use - much different than his pc. Eventually I will get to send the pics.

Carol, loved your blue heron pic and the one with egret too.

Chloe, I love the movies too. The one with Matt Damon sounds good. I think I will catch that one soon. I cannot go without some chocolate to eat.

Carol said...

Jan, I had to zoom as much as my little digital could zoom to get that first pic. Bird was on the opposite bank of the river. Lots of quality lost with that much zoom. Also had to balance it on something to keep it from shaking.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
It is just a terrible thing to have to go through that, that time of "anticipatory grief." It's just about impossible to make a good thing out of it. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

Carol said...

For movies, I like alternating popcorn with chocolate. Eat and repeat.

jan said...

Carol, that was a neat story about you and your family going to dinner and the orb in the picture. My mother died 26 years ago - she was the age that I am now. For years after I missed her so much. My sister used to have dreams about her and I never did dream about her and I would get mad at my sister when she would tell me she had dreams about her. I was jealous I guess. My dad died 4 years ago. I miss him but it was not the same as when my mother died. Like you and your sisters and mother. My mother and my sister and I did so much together. My mother was truly my emotional parent.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Indeed, "they" have been chatting away on this blog all day. I have nothing to do with it. (lol).

I know what's it's like to have to depend on the good will and graces of "Hubs" to perform tasks that I am technologically deficient with. He's doing one for me right now...performing "epoxy surgery" on my concrete garden turtle that I discovered decapitated two days ago. That is why we made the trip to Lowe's today.

Sometimes Hubs is not in good humor about these duties, but today he was. It sounds like your hubs takes it in stride too. Gotta love'em for that!

jan said...

"We were all miserable. I think she just wanted to go with us out to eat just one more time. I think her spirit managed to go with us."
There is no doubt, Carol, that her spirit was with all of you girls at that time. I believe that the 3 of you had her so close in your hearts when you were out eating that she was there also.

Ivy Green said...

I almost forgot to note, what with balloons, wildebeests, et al, that Hubs "made up" a delicious cajun recipe out of his head tonight, a "jambalaya" type thing with chicken, shrimp, and andouille sausage in a sauce based on "Spanish Rice-a-Roni." It was an amazing creation. I went for seconds...no wait, make that thirds.

jan said...

Ivy, you are so right, I too have to depend on my husb's good will to do some things for me that I cannot do. John was substituting for our regular priest this morning at church - so he was busy all morning and took a long nap this afternoon. He did try to download the pics but I think he is pretty wiped out from our adventure yesterday and work this morning - so I am not "crowding" him this afternoon.
I don't go to church regularly with him - only when the mood strikes me. I did go this morning because it is St. Francis Day who is the patron saint of animals so they were blessing the animals today - I love that service. John does great with it too because he loves animals so much - I think even more than people sometimes. I took Lobie - so she is now a "blessed dog." There were about 15-20 dogs in the service this morning - with about 30-40 people. They all were so good (the dogs) too. No cats for some reason. It was too funny - they really didn't bark or put up a fuss until the end and the Deacon was thanking John for his part in the service, and everyone clapped and all the dogs started barking.

jan said...

Ivy, sounds yummy. I love Jambalaya and boudin and gumbo. How wonderful for you that your hubs cooks. My husb tries but the only dish he makes is what he calls chicken, onions & potatoes. He takes a casserole dish, puts in 3 or 4 chicken pieces, a sliced onion and a large potatoe sliced, he pours a little water over it and bakes it for about an hour. It might sound ok but he doesn't know what kind of seasoning to put in it. If your hubs has any ideas of how to make it palatable, let me know.

Carol said...

That's sound interesting Jan, the blessing of the dogs. I'd take the Magster.

OK. I put our pic up for ya'll to see the orb. It's up on the left. I'm the haggared looking woman in the middle, it was a bad time. My twin is on the right and my older sister on the left. I wonder if I can remove it later.

Carol said...

refresh the blog

Carol said...

There were three pics taken. Only the first pic had the orb in it.

Anonymous said...

"It might sound ok but he doesn't know what kind of seasoning to put in it"

Jan, I hope he at least salts it. :)
You kind of made me laugh when you talked about it being more palatable.

Glad to hear there's another movie buff here Jan. That Matt Damon movie was unusual, and because of that, I enjoyed it. It has a little bit of a surprise ending too.

Carol said...

Did you look at the pic Chloe?

Ivy Green said...

There was one night during my sister's final ordeal that I insisted Mom leave the bedside vigil, and come out with me for a meal. I think it was just a Pizza Hut or something. We had a nice time, as much as possible under the circumstances, maybe an hour-an-a-half. When we returned to the hospital, all hell had broken loose, my b-i-l confronted us with the proverbial "where the hell were you?" question. We'd been oblivious to the cell phone summonses. Of course, that made Mom feel guilty. I did not feel guilty one bit. Mom needed that time off.

Later, I heard Mom telling my sister (who only had limited consciousness at that point) that she was sorry, sorry for making her "mad." My sister, God bless her, rose up in the last coherent words I heard from her, and said clearly "I'm not mad. I'm not mad at all."

You guys really get the ponders going.

Anonymous said...

Carol, I just took a look. I didn't see your post until I made my last one. I came back to see where the orb is and I'm going to take another look.

Anonymous said...

I see it Carol, by the light.

Carol said...

Did you see the pic I just put up Ivy?

Anonymous said...

Carol, It must be hard for you to look at that picture, to go through all those feelings again. Or do you find it comforting to know she was there.

Carol said...

You can see the rope right through it. That is one of those very detailed orbs. Out of three pics taken of us, one right after the other, it was the only pic with that orb in it. That is what some orbs look like.

Carol said...

No, it doesn't make me uncomfortable anymore. I wouldn't have thought that I would be as comfortable as I am now.

Carol said...

You can also see that my twin and I don't look anything alike. I look more like my older sister. I actually look like the older sister. I've had white hair for quite a while now.

Carol said...

Actually I think I have an orb on my forehead. I don't have a dent there. Can you see a perfect circle on my forehead. That's weird. I never noticed that before in the pic.

Anonymous said...

Carol, To me, you and your twin do look alike. You are both very pretty. She keeps her hair daYrk, etc., but I'm not surprised she's your twin. You are a beautiful family. Do you have pictures of your mom you could post (since you said you're ok with this now) or you girls when you were kids. I would 'love' to see them.

Anonymous said...

I noticed the perfect circle on your forehead, but figured it was light hitting it a certain way.

Ivy Green said...

Hubs says the "stand-by seasoning," besides salt, is "Italian Seasoning," or oregano. A whole bay leaf is good too.

Anonymous said...

Carol, Is that you and your mom you just put up?!

Carol said...

OK, if the blog was acting funny it isn't ghosts. I was adding a pic of mom and me. That was taken probably about 15-20 years ago.

Carol said...

Ivy did you see the pic?

Carol said...

It was the one time I actually colored my hair. It usually turned a nice orange so I didn't do it again.

Carol said...

That was right after I put my pool in.

Anonymous said...

That is a nice picture of you and your mom.

Carol, You are really beautiful. I'm surprised you could fight those guys off.

Carol said...

Probably closer to 20 years ago. The last pic that is.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Wowee, I never realized you could add a photo after a post was posted! Learn somethin' every day.

"Zat you in the middle? Actually, you and Mary look amazingly alike. You may not see it, but I do. And I am a twin expert. lol

Your orb looks exactly like one of the orbs in one of my London restaurant photos.

Sorry for the time-delay here, I hit refresh too soon and had to retype all my comment.

Ivy Green said...

Very beautiful keepsake photo of you and your Mom. She treasured you, it's obvious.

I think my mom treasures me too, although I always thought she preferred my sister.

Carol said...

Mary probably did color her hair but she never had the gray I had. She was a brunette and I was a dirty blonde. I started turning gray at 21.

Ivy Green said...

At least your hair wasn't green.

Carol said...

Ivy, anyone in your family, who has passed, who would have wanted to go on the vacation with you?

Carol said...

In the right light, it might have been green too. Gray hair does not take blonde well.

Carol said...

Or on your husband's side of the family?

Carol said...

Thanks Chloe, there was no one fighting over me.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I must ponder that one...wouldn't want to offend the wrong spirit. My sister is the one who once told me, "Iv, never eff with the spirits."

Anonymous said...

Then you must have been beating them off one way or another. Trust me.

You so wholesome looking, outdoorsy, serious and intelligent, all at the same time.

I think that it wasn't just your intelligence that intimidated them Carol. I think it may have been your looks too.

Ivy Green said...

Really, I will have to "dream" on that one. Jan or Chloe, would either of you know "what to look for" in interpreting dreams? I'm still trying to figure one out from last week. Mostly what comes out for me is whatever is hidden in my "guilty sub-conscience."

Solar said...

Just came back.

Who is the babe in the middle?

Anonymous said...

Carol, the reason I said that thing about intimidation, is because of what we talked about the other night. Others may not have seen it. Do you remember what I'm talking about?

Carol said...

These are good spirits Ivy. Don't be afraid. It's just an interesting phenomena. We don't know how long those who love us can hang out before they move on to the light. They may be able to come back and check on us. My feelings about it are and were all good. It was comforting.

Anonymous said...

... perfect timing Solar. :)

Carol said...

The phenomena was presented to be in sort of a logical and gentle way. That is why I was comfortable with it.

Carol said...

I meant to say presented to me.

Hello everyone
Hope all is well.I haven't read all the thread yet.I saw Chloe's post at TM and popped over.I cooked Chicken for dinner with all the trimmings.Damn, those deviled eggs were good.I got my physical this week and everything was terrific.I celebrated with southern style biscuit's,real butter too..

Carol said...

Yum, yum Tony.

Carol said...

We've gotten all weird here tonight Tony. I've scared poor Ivy and maybe Chloe also.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
It's never too late for that "valiant knight" experience. In London, there was a drunk guy with a Cockney accent who stepped up to "defend my honor" at the bar. Against what, I have no idea. The friends I was with finally sent him packing. Hubs was not involved and almost missed the event entirely. What a hoot.

Anonymous said...

"He can be tough also but in a nice sort of way."

Carol,
You so funny!Man,you sure got me! I learned at GM,i had to be tough..Weakness was unacceptable. It was be me and tough, worked well..

Carol said...

The entire experience I had while my mom was dying was painful but very spiritual in many ways.

Anonymous said...

Glad to hear you're eating real butter today Tony. Last time I read a post about you cooking dinner, you were using that butter 'flavored' cooking spray in place of butter. I went out and bought some of it after I read your post.

When you talk about cooking or cleaning products, I listen Tony. :)

Carol said...

We got your number Tony. I think I've known you in a past life. Frightening Ivy even more now.

Carol,

Yes, I saw the orbs, I have looked at the ones that you sent to me a few months back...they are forms of energy, vibrations...and time...as far as I have read, and limited understanding...but everything that exists is energy vibrations...

of our senses are just one...touch...we touch vibrations with our vision, and hearing etc...no such thing as ghosts..or any of the stuff..but reincarnation, such, I believe in...who is the BABE in the middle?

Tony, where the heck have you been, check in once a day will ya, and give me a hand here...that cool about your physical.

Ivy Green said...

Tony,
I wish you luck in following the stream of unconsciousness.
