Recipe for Christmas on de Bayou

To start my party preparation, I had to have my Christmas lights. In order to hold down the amount of work and time for preparation, I recommend you just leave your lights up all year. The hummingbirds enjoyed them and they added a nice touch to my bird pics. I stepped on a few over the last year but, heck, I just replaced those lights. And I'm here to tell ya, that's one thing that China does well, they can makes some tough Christmas lights. Mine have literally been though hell and high water.

Next is the Christmas tree. It helps if you have a sister with a QVC addiction. She always has an extra tree laying around. I decided to leave it au natural this year. Actually, I just hate taking off all those tiny oraments after Christmas.

Next is setting up your tables. I place my tables in two different rooms because there is no room in just one to put all the food. Also I need several electric outlets and my wiring does not allow for more than one hot appliance going on one side of the kitchen.

Presentation, presentation, presentation. That is very important with food preparation for a party.

Then you need some peeps to enjoy the food. Down here there are plenty of peeps who enjoy food. That might be why Louisiana is the happiest state in the country.

If you didn't notice, Maggie is down on the floor making the rounds.

That last pic is my kitchen. During the evening, most of the people were stuffed in the kitchen even though I decorated and have a big nice room up those little stairs at the end of the room. I couldn't take a pic when all the people were stuffed in the kitchen because there was no place to stand. At one point I thought I felt the camp swaying.

I left a little couch in the kitchen. Friends have asked why I don't take it out. I can't because it is usually where everyone wants to stay and they need a place to sit.

Carol,

Nice going girl...know there's a LA saying
'let the good times roll' in french? & it sure
looks like you did just that...

Coreen said...

Went back & I see Maggie right there too...

and looked up the correct way to say it...."laissez les bon temps roulez"...

There was no way to get pics of all the food. I prepared a bunch and everyone brought something. I had to put up the left overs and later I opened the frig and had an avalanche. I will haul the leftovers to work this week.

Are you snowed in Coreen? Who plows your driveway??

Carol said...

I was going to lock Maggie in the bedroom but I let her stay out as long as she was good. She was good as long as the food kept coming. Also last time I locked her in the bedroom, she wet the bed.

Coreen said...

Looks like you & Maggie will have a lot of
snacks for awhile.....

and yes, we did finally get snow, didn't start
til about 7 p.m., just now ending. Looks to
be around 8", am just having breakfast & will
go out & survey the landscape. My driveway
was ploughed about 7 a.m. by a client (Don) who
I have known for many years (watched him grow
up) he has always cleaned the driveway here & my old house...

but now I still have to clean up the leftover
near the garage doors, clean a patch for the
birds, front steps, & maybe the back porch
stairs, depends how heavy it is....

and there will definitely be a 'white christmas' here.

I was leaving you a message at the tailend of
the last post, again condolences for your Saints.

Nice food layout Carol! You amaze me.

I see what you meant when you said Maggie is sociable. She looks like there's no place she'd rather be than right there in the middle of that room. What a cutie.

I bet you'll be busy today. Then after you're not busy anymore, you'll just be tired.

Congratulations on a job well done. It looks like the party was a big success. Did you have music? Pink - Get the Party Started

I read a place in Alaska got 5'8" of snow in one day. That's hard for me to comprehend.
It sure is cold here this morning, but will be sunny. When it's sunny here, it usually feels warm.

(I had to fix the typo in the last one, so deleted it. Ha, My Alzheimer is shining through.)

Yes, there are lots of snacks, just what I don't need. I'm having spinach artichoke dip on toast this morning.

It is sad for the Saints but then they didn't have half of their fans watching because the game was on that NFL network. People were searching the town for places to go to watch the game. Most of the places that had the game were packed. I could have seen it at my house but I'm glad I didn't get to watch it now.

I heard that it won't be long before all football will be only available with these satellite networks and you will pay mucho dinero to watch. That will cut out many of us, not too dedicated, fans.

Ok, I think I'm caught up.
Jan, So glad to see you're on the mend. You've had some added stress in your life too, so that probably doesn't help. But you've got your trip to look forward to, so I think you'll have a very nice Christmas.

Ok, I'm outta the house for a chunk of the day. See you all later.

Wait a minute...
Mary, sounds like you enjoyed the party too. Good.

And Don, I loved your life in a egg shell idea.

Also glad to see that Solar is still around and well.

Coreen,
Did you get any pictures of the snow. I have on my computer background a picture I think you said you took last yr. It is your driveway with a thick covering of the whitest snow and your lampposts with ribbons on them. It is a beautiful picture.
How neat to have a 'white Christmas'.

Mary said...

Jan,
I did have a good time at Carol's party. That's about all I did all wk. I was kind of bummed out about Jeremy not coming down. I go back to work tomorrow. I did get some cleaning done which was needed.
Are you getting excited about the cruise.
I hate it that your sick again. Have you been taking vitamins. I swear by them. My diet isn't always the best so I take a handful of vitamins every morning and some at night also.
I think that's what's helped me. I haven't had a cold or anything so far.

jan said...

Hi Mary, looks like we are on here at the same time. Good to connect with you. I always am happy to get some cleaning done - ususally do that when I am off work too. I know how it feels to have your kiddo cancel out on a visit. My dad died 4 years ago, and I remember cancelling out sometimes on visits with him. Sometimes wish I could go back and "make" those visits with him now. So much I would like to tell him about the past 4 years.

I never get excited about trips - seems there is always so much to do to get ready to go. I do enjoy them when they get here though.

I take vitamins too. I also eat very healthy now - I make sure I get all my 7-8 servings of fruits and veggies too. I started taking Vit D about 5 months ago on the advice of my doc and now my blood level is up to normal. I am extremely healthy for a gal of 68 years. I have a great BP and Chol and no meds of any kind - except for antihistamines. I think it is stress. Work is lots more stressful for me now. Come June (retire) I think all will be better. I plan to take some non-credit art courses and swim every day. I have several projects I want to finish and get in a little time to see some places in the good ole USA that I want to visit.

jan said...

Carol, I love the pictures of your Christmas-time camp and your party and food. So glad I ate before checking in or I would be dying of hunger. Your food looks scrumptious. I want to go back up and "blow up" your pics so I can see Maggie.

Now I see Maggie - don't know how I missed her before. I think I recognize the lady with the green glass - laughing. Do I know her? Where are pictures of you? I love your pic with Maggie in your avatar.

jan said...

Chloe, where are you off to? Are you going shopping. If so, good luck out there.

Mary said...

My Vit.D level was real low also. I'm taking 50,000U a week and still it is only at the very lowest normal level.
I take 1000 mg. of Ester C twice a day also. I think that's what has kept the colds away.
June will be here before you know it. I'm not sure if you said before but is your husband retired?

jan said...

Yuk, started a new book "The Shack" I don't like it. Started out very sad and now is getting super religious. I get enough of that when John is going to preach - I always get a preview of his sermons. I don't go to church any more. Figured I got enough of that in my early life and then being a clergy wife and having to attend every Sunday. I get my dose of spiritualness out on my walks in nature. I do believe in God - I think I like what Einstein and some other scientists have said - those who believe in a God who probably has something to do with the universe but I have never felt that God interferes in our personal lives. If so why would young innocent children suffer and die.

jan said...

John is retired but is in an unpaid position at our little church. The church bulletin says he is Associate Priest - He does the service and Eucharist when the Priest is ill or out of town. But he does not get paid - so he offers his service as part of his pledge.

I think my catching viruses lately is related to my age - I used to rarely get colds either. I should not be working with little kids - they always have runny noses. I wash my hands religiously (there's that word again).

jan said...

It is good you are taking the Vit D. Some of my students did a library search and wrote a paper on Vit D and high blood levels are supposed to be protective for various types of CA.

jan said...

Mary, tell me about Jeremy. What does he do? What kind of kid was he? Do you like his wife? How long has he been married?

Mary said...

Jan,
Jeremy is a computer consultant. He works out of Chicago but has to travel a good bit. His wife is not happy about his traveling. He has been looking for something not involving traveling but hasn't found it yet.
Jeremy met Stephanie not long after he moved to Chicago in 2003. They started out as "just friends" but it grew into more. They were married on Nov.8,2007. I do like Stephanie and better stop there in case she ever reads this blog. Carol told her about the blog.

Carol said...

Jan, I like the idea of having a God, one, two, or a herd of them. It gives me less of a feeling of helplessness when I feel I can pray to someone. Maybe it's just our positive thoughts and wishes that have power. That's OK also.

I like getting excited about going on a fun trip. Well, at least I think I remember feeling that way. It's been so long. I used to get excited on Fridays about coming out to the camp and now I don't even have that since I'm here all the time.

Solar said...

Carol,

Looks like a very nice party. Lots of food, and your camp house looks nice and cozy. I see that you have a real life Solar in the group....all the pinks and just one guy. HA!

Coreen, Hope that you don't get too much snow. It has not been very bas here, not bad at all. We just has a few inches, and it has warmed up enough to melt it.

Chloe, It's sunday, and you know what to do..it is going to be a little while before Im back to a normal shecduale...but will check in regularly.

Don, I like the comments that you have been putting up..and making us think about the whole concept of the Universe, and what it means to us...as U know; maybe, I do beliveve in the quantum theory's and the expansion of the Universe after the big bang...

he Universe brought us (the earth) all of the aggregate to make life possible...I also believe that we did not come from a premordial soup like some say...but from chemical reactions, and like Frankenstien...a little electricity to make us move our butts...

Jan, I think that you and I are very much alike, and believe the same things..mostly.

What A. Einstien beleived in was the possability of there bieng a God, not the God that most of the world has created..not a good that is alway's looking over someones shoulder, jut to see what they did wrong..or to grant miricles..there is so much proof that this god does not exist....

Einstien believed in the God, that Spinoza said that if there was one...it would be a great cosmic god that did not interfere with Man..a god of nature and the universe all at the same time.

I believe that we are all bits and pieces of this God, and of the Universe...and there for...the biggest taboo...we are god..

The conversation that Don has started is a great one...I know that he and I differ on some of this...

Will see you all tomorrow morning ...but will leave you with this:

The Indian With One Testicle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Indian With One Testicle
There once was an Indian who had only one testicle and whose given name was
'Onestone'. He hated that name and asked everyone not to call him Onestone.
After years and years of torment, Onestone finally cracked and said,' If
anyone calls me Onestone again I will kill them!'
The word got around and nobody called
him that any more.
Then one day a young woman named Blue Bird forgot and said, 'Good morning,
Onestone.' He

jumped up, grabbed her and took her deep into

the forest where he made love to her all day and

all night. He made love to her all the next day,

until Blue Bird died from exhaustion.

The word got around that Onestone meant what

he promised he would do. Years went by and no

one dared call him by his given name until A woman

named Yellow Bird returned to the village after being

away. Yellow Bird , who wasBlue Bird's cousin, was

overjoyed when she saw Onestone. She hugged him

and said, 'Good to see you, Onestone.'

Onestone grabbed her, took her deep into the forest,

then he made love to her all day, made love to her all

night, made love to her all the next day, made love to

her all the next night, but Yellow Bird wouldn't die!

Why ???

OH, come on... take a guess !!!

Think about it !!!

Everyone knows...

You can't kill Two Birds with OneStone!!!

jan said...

Solar, I had to read the last sentence - didn't get it until then. You are a character. I will have to tell John that one.

Yes Solar, in many ways I think we are alike. it is the God of the Cosmos and Universe that you talk about that I believe in. Yet I do pray for my children and other people and other peoples children - and sometimes myself when I am frightened by something, so maybe I am a fraud after all???? Prayer, like meditation is comforting - whether there is any answer is anyone's guess.

Solar, I have a story for you. The old woman was destitute and prayed to God everyday that she would win the lottery. One day she said to God - God, why don't you ever answer my prayers? God replied, old woman, meet me halfway, buy a lottery ticket.

jan said...

Mary, I hear you about not saying too much. We never know who will be lurking in the corners of this lovely little blog that Carol created.

jan said...

Carol, my favorite of your pictures is the 1st one of your house in the dark with the little lights.

jan said...

Mary, Sounds like you did a great job raising Jeremy. I loved having sons. I wanted a daughter, but now realize what fun it was having sons. Now I have granddaughters.

Chloe, I too have trouble comprehending that much snow (in Alaska). It is so beautiful, but lots of work to get around in.

Coreen, how are you doing in the snow today?

jan said...

Carol, isn't it funny that at a party men and women congregate by gender.

Anonymous said...

It's not at all odd that genders congregate jan. women relationship build, men talk about activities. You can even see that on this blog.

solar, there are those that think when jesus said I and the Father am one, he meant that for each of us. Same for if you have seen me, you have seen the Father. We are all one with God, somehow. However, Jesus said he didn't know God's plans, so I'm not quite sure how all of that was supposed to work.

I sometimes think that prayer is really for the prayer, not the person that we pray for. Brain scans show that a person's brain changes when they pray a lot. I've never been able to do that and can't imagine sitting around talking that long.

Glad you had a good time, Carol and Mary.

Anonymous said...

"I sometimes think that prayer is really for the prayer, not the person that we pray for"

I agree with that so much.

Anonymous said...

Well Carol, Now that your party was a success, all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the season. Just let things happen. Watch 2009 finish and 2010 begin. Doesn't that sound easy. No more hustle and bustle, for a while anyway.

I really love it when a new year begins. My heads spinning, it's been happening so fast (for a while now). Next thing we know it'll be spring again, and our hummers will be coming home.

Anonymous said...

And Jan, before you know it, you'll be retired. Speaking of relaxing. You're going to love it Jan. You'll have more time to explore all the things that interest you, even the ones you don't know about yet. You'll be more 'you' than you've ever been in your life. A great time to look forward to.

Anonymous said...

Solar, How long are you going to be on this schedule? Not complaining, just glad you are finding time to check in and let us know everything is going alright. Still, it'll be nice when you're around more.

Carol said...

No Chloe, now I have to catch up on everything I put off while getting ready for the party. It will be less stressful though.

What happens when you get to zero?? It's not Dec 2010 yet.

Carol said...

Chloe, did you ever tell us what Santa's bringing to little Em?

Ivy, you having fun, hustling and bustling?

Coreen said...

It's been a quiet day here I see.

Carol, did you get a chance to wind down & relax today.

Is this a short week at work for you. I will
not go to my office Christmas Eve or Day.

Chloe, you haven't mentioned what your Christmas is going to be either. Did you put up a tree, do you cook for either eve or day.

The snow is going to be here for awhile, since
it won't really warm up enough to melt it away.

I did take some pics today and I will
post some tomorrow if you would like to see
what will be a white christmas. I know Mary
asked this morning if I had any pics.

Mary said...

Iiiiiivy, Where are you? We've been missing you. Hope everything is going OK. Let us hear from you sometime.

Carol said...

We would love to see your winter wonderland Coreen. It's nice for us to be able to enjoy it from a distance.

Carol said...

I saw the snow pic that Sea linked of her place on TM today. Pretty but not good for business.

Carol said...

Ivy, does your daughter have her own apartment or does she live in a dorm? Is she home for Christmas and semester break?

Coreen said...

Enjoying it from a distance is the absolute
best way, no cold, no wet, not slipping & sliding....

I looked at Sea's pics too & think she
had quite a bit more snow than we did.

Carol said...

How much snow do you average in the winter Coreen?

Anonymous said...

Hey guys, we'll be putting up our tree tomorrow or Tuesday (forever late). It won't be anything fancy either.

We'll be going out with friends on Christmas eve (earlier in the day), and I'll be cooking on Christmas day. We had a vote and will be having ham again. I guess we didn't get our fill of it at Thanksgiving. We will keep things very simple, and like Carol, we'll be going to a Christmas day movie.

Emma's toys are mostly those that will help her with her walking (which seems to be her greatest desire at this time): ride and push toys. stuffed animals, videos, and a small assortment of other things. There's only so much you can get an 11 month old baby, without it becoming meaningless to them. I think her favorite will be the weighted push down toy that we found that is like Sid the Science kid has in his room (you know the type that you push over and it pops right back up - it's a penguin). Sid the Science kid is our favorite cartoon that we watch on PBS every morning at 7:30 while eating our breakfast. An indescribably clever program that even I enjoy immensely. That, and Wonderpets is very cute and clever too. I'm kinda old to be watching cartoons, but what the heck.

I guess you can tell, I'm not a very 'traditional' person, but I'm becoming moreso once again, because I know how important it is for Emma. An important part of my job is to make sure she fits into our culture as 'traditionally' as possible, even though there may be some things about it that I don't particularly agree with. Nothing major though. :) Carol, you'd be proud of me, to see how domesticated I've become again. I cook just about every day, and little Emma is 'finally' starting to eat. She got those first teeth so late, and didn't much like baby food, but now is able to eat a lot more things with the few teeth she does have. She's actually starting to enjoy it. I guess watching me happily eating away all these months has worn off on her. She's getting the idea of what great fun food can be. I know I sure love it. I admit I'm also one of the live to eat people.

Coreen said...

I don't know the amount, I would guess maybe
about 20" a season, but in the last couple
of years, we have been cold in December, it
should be about 40 now, but its only 30, & when
it snows, it stays on the ground longer, since
it doesn't melt.

I also remember some Decembers in the last 10 years when it is like 60+ & no snow for the season.

Anonymous said...

Well, I'm all caught up and have enjoyed everyone's posts, but I am sure tired out, so will see you all tomorrow.

jan said...

Coreen, looking forward to your snow pictures. I prefer to admire it from a distance.

Ivy, I miss you too.

Chloe, are you speaking from experience. Have you retired?

Anonymous said...

Coreen, That's a lot of snow. Ha! Carol and I would never make it through one winter there. You know how much we complain when it's under 40.

I think clothes have a lot to do with it. We just don't dress as warmly here. That, plus you do get acclimated to where you live.

Coreen said...

Chloe,

The way you described the toys for Em made me
smile, I remember buying toys for some of my
friend's kids when they were small & the presents under their trees were like going to
Toyland.....

I would go with My BFF (still is)to
get the toys her son wanted, we would be on a
mission, but he always got the ones he wanted...

John is really enjoying his new Droid. He is one who "plays" with his technology - like kids do. He has discovered the GPS system and thinks the map of Albuq is wonderful. We went out to b'fast and he had to show me on his GPS where we were - as if I didn't know :))

Carol, I wonder how similar the Droid is to your iphoney.

Ivy Green said...

Nothing going on here. Really. Hubs baked a pie. Mrs. Smith's. That's about it. He's been baking Mrs. Smith pies ever since his bachelor days. One time back in those days, he baked himself a cherry pie and set it in the kitchen to cool. Never gave it another thought. Next day he was sitting around and it occurred to him, "Didn't I bake a pie?" Just then he spotted a something shiny on the floor by the corner. He picked it up and it was a sliver of aluminum pie tin. His dog had grabbed the pie off the counter and ate it, tin and all, except one tiny bit of aluminum.

The apple pie with the crumb topping is the one Hubs just baked. I turned around and he threw the little icing packet in the trash. I said, "What, are you nuts?" He said we don't need the "extra sugar." I said if you're going to quibble about sugar, then don't don't bake pie!"

jan said...

Chloe, thanks for posting the link to Sid the SK. I see why Emma (and you) like it.

Ivy, that is a good pie. I have made apple pies and cannot do any better - or as well. I don't remember the icing packet - maybe I threw it out accidentally.

jan said...

Mary, my fav ice cream - can't get it here. Bummer

Mary said...

Ivy, I loved the link you posted about the family in England. I would have loved to have had a big family. Alot of work but alot of fun also. I really miss the family gatherings we had when we were younger.

jan said...

Ivy, wow - I clicked on your link above - and I can't imagine that many kids any morning. Do you ever see the Duggar family on TV. I think they are in Texas or Tennessee now. They were in Fayetteville Ark when we lived about 20 miles from there. They have 18 kids. Their oldest son and wife recently had a baby - and they said they are going to have 2 - I think the Duggers have a reality show on TV now. The kids are home-schooled too. As the saying goes- Different strokes for different folks.

Mary said...

Guess I better hit the sack. I have to get up at 4am to get ready for work. That week off sure flew by.

jan said...

Mary, the dog I was talking about that ate bread and cookies- she was a golden retriever - very similar to labs. I think labs and retrievers are just naturally mischevious - and will eat about anything that they can find anywhere.

jan said...

Nite Mary, I am going to bed too.

Carol said...

Ivy, I just went to the link about the big family. Go back and look, every face in that crowd is saying, please help me! There is not one genuine smile in the group.

Carol said...

I think there are some women who get off on those pregnancy hormones. At least now she has the older kids to help out and maybe that is why she feels broody when she doesn't have a baby to take care of. It's her excuse to say, hey, I'm busy here.

No, that would not be any fantasy of mine.
I taught with a woman who was a member of a family of 18.

Carol said...

And Chloe, that is a cute little cartoon. They can dance. I can see why you would like it too.

Now, one thing that would be fun about having all those youngsters, I would enjoy having an excuse to play with all their toys. I still like toys. I used to love video games before age started getting to my hand eye coordination.

I had the first Atari, then Intellivision, then Nintindo, then Super Nintindo. It was when Super Nintindo came out that my coordination started to go. It was on one of those Ape games. I could never figure out what to do and I didn't have a kid around to learn me on it. I even have one of those tiny little Nintindos out here somewhere. I loved the Super Marios. He, he, he.

Now, the best I can do is Spider Solitaire. And sometimes I even have trouble getting the cards to move to play that game. Old age ain't for sissies.

And it is nice that they aren't needing any government assistance with their family. Of course they do have universal health insurance over there.

BTW, is anyone keeping up with how the government is doing these days. I used to be obsessed with it. Now, I'm not even sure if we still have the same president. Any big news there that I need to know? I usually even miss my 30 minutes of national news a day.

" They can dance. I can see why you would like it too."

Carol, Actually what I like about it is how clever it is. And very educational. The father and mother seem to have reversed roles, which is humorous and refreshing in many ways. Gramma is a nurse, and there's a baby sister in a high chair that Emma can relate to. It shows Sid starting out in his room every morning ('always' talking and pondering), then going to the kitchen where everyone gathers for breakfast. They always start out learning something there, then he carries that knowledge to school, where he continue to develop the idea there. (That theme song you heard is the same everyday when he gets there). Then the teacher is what you wish all teachers could be. The routine is basically the same everyday, but they somehow make it interesting, fun, as well as educational, everyday. I can't recommend it highly enough for young children (ha! and this particular adult - I need to point out that I'm not a cartoon fan normally). Very message that it gives is something important for children to learn. And it's very consistent.

Jan, Ivy and Mary, I enjoyed the pleasant conversation you all had last night. The dog stories were especially funny.

I love cooking from scratch and went through a phase where I made my own pie crust. I got cutting butter into the flour a real project, getting it just right and not too overworked.

It just never seemed to turn out right though. Found out years later that you just can't use wheat flour to make a good crust. :^)

At least that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
