A couple of weeks ago Jan mentioned that she gets scared when watching a movie even if she has seen it before. There is a reason for this. There were group studies that tested several people when watching something scary. They all knew what was going to happen; but were scared any way..when they were attached to wires, that scanned their brain...the brain re-acted in that way in order to protect the organism, that part tell us to run for safety....evolution is still very strong in our subconscious..

The emotions of watching something regardless if you know the outcome before hand, are still the same, as if you were experience it for the first time, in most cases.
I haven't been keeping up with what science has come up with lately, but this reminds me to do just that..should be many interesting things to read..later

Yes Coreen, my Saints gave me quite a scare yesterday. I couldn't even watch some of it, I had to go walk around. It's usually the ones you don't expect to that beat ya. The next two games are teams who haven't won many games. They'll probably be two of the toughest games.
I was thinking that maybe the Saints were doing something I used to do when I'd go whitewater canoeing. When the rapids weren't too difficult, I'd take them standing up, just to make it more of a challenge. Maybe the Saints like to get behind just to make it a more exciting game.

Because I thought that fear is partly learned, I wanted to find a little more information about it. This article seems to go through it very well, step by step, and does include what you said about evolution. I'm a little 'clearer' now. This is a long paragraph (from a very long one page article) that I think says what you are talking about, talking about the part of the brain where fear is stored.:

Solar, That's why I linked it. I agree. When I was young, in my 20s, I remember saying to others, that I felt like my emotions controlled me, instead of me controlling them. That, I think, led me on a life long struggle to try to understand the mind so well. And I think I have Solar. Obviously, not everything, but a good general idea.
I'm not talking about the science of the mind though. You understand that 'much' better than I do, because you're open to it. Carol is completely right about 'perception' and being open to what's right in front of us. We look for things that fit into our established belief system.

I could never believe in myself, if at some point I didn't 'decide' to believe in free choice and the importance of the individual. Hi and Bye all, I had a long day - so didn't check in until now. I have enjoyed reading your comments. I worked on the baby quilt tonight and watched DWTS too. My pick is Mya but Derek is my favorite pro. He is an amazing choreographer and dancer. His and Joanna's futuristic dance was amazing.
I finished the book by Dan Browne "The Lost Symbol" liked it a lot. Pretty exciting. He sounds too religious in the end for my taste though. Its all about the Masons. My grandfather was a Mason and so was John's dad. But I know very little about this group - so found this part of the book interesting. The story takes place in Wash D.C. and has much to do with the various monuments.

I saw them talking about arresting people that don't have insurance on TM the other day. They already do but it wasn't because they didn't have insurance. Please let's not find any other reasons to arrest people even though I do agree that everyone should contribute, if they can, to the cost of healthcare.
It is amazing how many people come to jail looking awful. They have lots of serious medical problems but haven't taken care of themselves in years. Oh and they were just on their way to get everything fixed when they, unfortunately, got arrested. Now it is an emergency, hurry. If I had a nickel for everytime I heard that.
We get them cleaned up and looking good, just to have them go back out and get all messed up again. Then their back for another round. We're kind of like a paint and body shop, bring in your wrecks and we fix um.

Im coming back from just losing yet another post. I should have done what I told Mary not to do..I refreshed and lost it.
What i wanted to say is that; altho it has been a long time since I have read Pascal...I do like him, and his way of putting things in a way that is understandable.
The Philosopher that I like and want to understand the most in Baruch Spinoza. He lived at the same time that A. Einstien lied, and A. E. agreed with him, and associated his remarks with Spinoza's outlook of life.
The thing is that I have read what he say's often, b/c he combines philosophy with the brain, and the mind..even with biology....the Neurologist Antonio Damasio, also admires Spinoza very much, and say's that what he visioned is all very relevant today..combine these two..and it is a slow understanding of it all...the mappings of the brain, which grew the body, can't be separated; and very, very difficult..but yes I do like Pascal and have said many of the things that he has said...he likes the synergy aspect..doesn't use the word..but its there...something like " If there is a God, he is there for all of his people, not just for some of them. he would not have blinded some while opening the eyes of others..how would he choose" that is a very, very, lose quote but I hope that he came across in it..
I find less, and less time for books, like these, with the internet..I also have visited that Discover one that you posted..there are a few more, and then there is the political stuff..never enough time...

Hi folks, just checking in. Really busy with students this week.
I don't know if you have been watching national news about what has happened in college level women's soccer. As a member of the Univ of NM community, I am very distressed about the UNM women's soccer team member who assaulted the other soccer players from Utah a couple of weeks ago. Most people I talk to here are very disappointed in her behavior. This incident came after a UNM football coach punched another coach. The behavior by the coach has literally been swept under the rug by our administration - and then the soccer player assaulted members of the opposing team. Makes me wonder if the soccer player is imitating the behavior of the coach. I wrote the UNM President a few weeks ago and expressed my concern that the coach was modeling behaviors for our young people in the university and the community. It seems that, in fact, this is what happened.
Any bets on who might get kicked off DWTS's tonight. Mary has said she likes Joanna and Derek. I like Mya (don't know her partner's name). Anyone else have a favorite?

Jan, Coreen said Derek and Joann were her favorites. I really like Mya. I also really like Kelly Osbourne, not that she is the best but she has such a cute personality and has really tried hard. I think Mya has taken some kind of dancing before.
Joann may have had dancing before, also. Even if it wasn't ballroom dancing, any kind of dancing lessons teach you a certain amt. of grace and techniques that the others don't have.
Well, even though I like little Kelly, she's not the best. And then Donnie is the second from the bottom. The other three are good with Aaron making the most improvement with his dancing.
I doubt Donnie will get the axe. Probably some kind of show biz politics involved there. And from what I have seen from previous talent shows this year, it ain't about who has the most talent anyway, it's about popularity.

I think Kelly Osbourne is so cute and has a great personality - but she is not the best dancer. I agree though that the winner is often the one with the best fan following - so sometimes it is personality or how they come across on TV.
I think Aaron has made the most progress, but for some reason he sort of "turns me off" - again its a personality thing.
It is going to be interesting because there are so many factors to consider. I do love to watch the dancing though. My favorite dances are the latin dances.

Coreen, I do like country music. Years ago I lived in Montana and worked for the State dept of health and drove all over the state. That was in the late 1970's and my car did not have a tape player and the only stations I could get on the radio played country music - after a few months of that I liked country music. Willie Nelson is my favorite male singer. I especially like Celine Dion and Sarah McLaughlin. My favorite music era is the '70's.
Jan, I like country music also and I love to dance to it. What Carol meant by the "chicken catcher" is on Americas Gor Talent this past season, this guy who was a chicken catcher won. He sang OK but by far, he wasn't the best talent. He only won because of his sob story.

player & the incident involving a coach.
Being pretty cynical, my first impression of the soccer clip was not much new (other than it
was a woman, not a man behaving badly & I suspect that it would not have gotten any TV
exposure, if it had been a boy), but since school sports programs, college in particular,are such big business, winning is the only thing that seems to matter, the more winning, the more $$$, so don't know that they are teaching sportsmanship.
Jan, there is something about Aaron that turns most people off even the judges. That makes the high scores he's gotten recently even more significant. I'll have to admit he grates on my nerves also. I think he has a low self-esteem and he projects that.
Well, Marie, on ET, just said she thought Aaron would get the boot tonight on DWTS. I think that also. He almost got it last week. I don't know what it is but he grates on my nerves. He tied Donnie at the bottom last night.
I once made a C&W CD with different songs by different artists that represented my feeling throughout a loss of a relationship. It included all the stages of grief, ending with resolution. I think the last song on the CD was "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack.
It was a neat CD, had a lot of really sad but pretty songs. I wish I still had that CD but I lost it also. LOL.

Yes, we are getting rain from Ida. The wind and rain reopened a leak at the front of the house that first appeared five years ago during Hurricane Ivan. It's only during "name storms" that we get this leak, it must be peculiar to the wind direction of tropical storm rains.

There was a lot of toweling off and blow-drying of dogs throughout the day. They wore their little raincoats, but those are not much help when it rains sideways.

Ivy, Maggie won't let me put on her slicker suit with the little hood. Every time I try, there's a fight and she wins. I got it on her once but the hood went down over her eyes and she was running into things. That was the last time she had it on.

Like I said: I think that Science and Religion could both be taught..the golden rules are there for us all..the Vatican doesn't think so, or any of the other organization's.
Back to the Vatican's interest; in finding other possible converts..well, it is just a ploy to have their own scientist come up with their own version of what could be found...they do this on a regular basis..most scientist's that they , do not have the credentials to give valid conclusions imo...Every day they are presented with more, and more proof of the origins of our Universe, and ourselves. It is not going to get any easier for them to deny what 90% of the true scientist find to be true...

I hope by "crack you up" you don't mean I'm driving you crazy? Just kidding. Always glad when you take time to post to us, we know it's not your funnest thing, pecking away at the keyboard. Sometimes I find it tedious too, mainly because I'm a slow typer.
Actually, today, I figured a way to attach my laptop to my elliptical machine. Theoretically that means I can follow the blogs and exercise at the same time. We'll have to see how that works since I have a hard enough time typing while just sitting.

Carol, I need your professional nurse practitioner opinion. I was bringing a cardboard box of stuff home from work Sunday night. I think I got a spider bite on my thumb - it hurt for a couple of minutes - it got really blue really quick. I thought I had busted a little blood vessel at first. My whole thumb looks bruised. It has not spread beyond my thumb but even the front of my thumb looks bruised. Should I try to see my doc?
Just bruised Jan? Not cold and necrotic? All spiders do have some venom. The most dangerous is that Brown Recluse and there is no doubt when they get ya. The area around the bite become necrotic and sloughs off, leaving a crater. Usually won't heal without some skin grafting.
Is the circulation OK and good skin temp, good sensation?
This is three days later. Most serious stuff besides some infection, like staph, will have already happened. Those staph infections are usually hot, inflammed,. red and painful
Could be that it did break a blood vessel and it is bruised. If you are worried see your medical practitioner. My disclaimer.

I must have had an unusual group of nuns teaching me because we learned that science and religion are compatible, and that even abortion could be acceptable up to a certain number of weeks. Bear Woman and I were parochial schoolmates from third grade on. She grew up to be a scientist and a naturalist. The nuns were also quick to condemn the church's past injustices and excesses. I knew of no "priestly violations" of schoolchildren, but then I could also have been living in my introverted bubble. I did see nuns get carried away with disciplinary methods for which one of them earned a punch in the gut by my little sister. When I saw hypocrisy, I was quick to point it out to the powers that be. I saw my own parents argue with priests, and act freely to pick and choose the doctrines that suited them, ignoring those that didn't. I developed my own moral compass early on. Where it intersected with church teachings, all the better. When it didn't, I went my own way. Take the good and focus on that; leave the rest in the dustbin of history, I say. (Not that I don't like history).
How's your laptop's bone density?

I take Bone-evil (Boneva). My bone density is 1 on the dexascan, does that make sense? I forget the scale. The elliptical helps me with balance, as does yoga.
This may sound nuts but I like the concept of a creative intelligence in the universe. It's sort of a compromise for me.

Me too, I'll have to do that tomorrow since it's late. Whatever number it was, it was an improvement since the previous test, and the monthly Bone-evil pill, so they said keep on keepin' on.
I haven't even had a bone density in years and I'm on that Forteo. Those injections I'm supposed to take every day but that I forget to give myself except for a couple of times a week. I guess they determined my need from my history of three vertebral compression fractures and 4 pelvic fractures in five years. Also determined I'm a pretty big klutz.

But I did take a bad step off one of the many steps around here about a week ago, spun my ankle around a couple of times and it's just fine. Had no pain, no swelling. Something is working.
We got 178 here, so we have to think about a roll-over...

Last weekend I bought some pecans in the shell for my squirrels. I thought it would be a treat for them. I paid more for the pecans in the shell than I would have paid for the shelled ones but I know their little teeth need the work out.
I set several out and nada. They are still sitting there. They do have lots of other stuff, like acorns and these nuts that fall off the cypress trees to eat. Maybe they don't even know what a pecan is.
