Turtles on a Log

Hope you enjoyed your day yesterday Solar cuz today you are just another turtle on a log, like the rest of us.

You've seen um, huh? All those turtles sitting on a log sunning themselves. They're cute. See them all the time in the summer here. When you get close they drop off the log, plop, plop, plop, maybe a few more plops, all depends on how many turtles are on the log.

We have about 8 or so turtles here, at least that is how many that have their heads out of the shell. May have a few more that think they're hiding. We see them. Might as well show yourself, you other turtles.

I woulda done a new post but didn't have a pic of a bunch of turtles on a log and didn't want to borrow one from somewhere else when I have so many I coulda taken a pic of out here. I just didn't know I would need a pic of a bunch of turtles on a log. I wonder if Ivy can find a pome about that. If I had more time I could probably write one. Yeah, if only I had more time.

I started this comment and got up to get some coffee. While I was gone, my computer decided to turn itself off to install somethin. I'm sure it probably asked my premission but I wasn't here to say no, don't do it. I just bet it knew I was out of the room.

When I got back and saw that "Window, installing updates, do not turn off your computer", I could have slapped this thing silly. But what good would that have done? It would have gotten me back by breaking. It would have had the last laugh.

It's not nice to screw with an old lady, that had to get up early, in a cold house, cuz it was hot when I went to bed and I didn't want to get hotter by turning on heat that I can't regulate, and it doesn't work that well anyway.

And then to do it before I had several cups of coffee in me. Well maybe if I woulda had those cups of coffee in me I would have slapped this thing and not cared about the consequences. We do have a Best Buy around here and these dumb things don't last that long anyway.

Well I decided to put up a new post anyway. This is not a pic of turtles on a log but if you get a magnifying glass, I'm sure there are probably some turtles on a log over there somewhere. Look really close.

On my way home from work I came up with my poem. Here it is:

Eight Little Turtles Sitting on a Log

Eight little turtles
sitting on a log,
while most of the space
Solar turtle does hog.

Little Carol turtle is
checking for warts,
while little Solar turtle
is looking for tarts.

Little Chloe turtle says
that ain't me,
and little Solar turtle
says he he he.

Little Mary turtle is
stringing some beads,
while little Ivy turtle
just sits and reads.

If little Solar turtle
find him that tart,
then little turtle clothes,
little Jan and Coreen turtle
must start.

While little Carol turtle
starts up the sup,
little Tony turtle
cleans it all up.

Well I looked and I didn't see any turtles on a log. It woulda helped if I would have used a pic with a log in it. Well, I was in a hurry and didn't have time to dilly dally around. And that dang Windows even took out some of that time.

Someone write Bill G and give him a piece of my mind. No maybe not, I will need all the mind I have at work today.

The Little Turtle

There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.

He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught he minnow.
But he didn't catch me.

Carol, Another great picture, turtles or no turtles. I love it.

I did, however, 'have' to look up a picture of some turtles that were basking on a log, because I'm ashamed to say I've never seen it. Very, very cute in the picture though. Here is a page with all sizes doing just that.:

BTW Ivy, A very cute poem too. Another one I can share with Emma.

There's been several times I have stopped my car on the busy road that goes along side the area where I live (only two lanes, but pretty much a highway, high speed and all) because I've seen a turtle crossing it. I've even been known to get out and give the little guy a hand. I just hate the way they consistently hit animals of all kinds on that rode, including deer. Most of the bad stuff happens at night though. Isn't that always the way.

Have a great day everyone.

Jan, I just now went back to catch up on the last thread, before I shut down. I forgot to when I was here earlier, for some reason. I don't know who was here from Houston last night Jan, when you were here, but it wasn't me or I would have said hi. I think mine show's up on the map as 'Spring' now. I live quite a bit Northwest of Houston.

Solar, Was glad to see that last post of yours on that last thread too. Thanks.

Ok, gone again...

Carol, I am sitting here LOL about the turtles on the log. When I first got the pic I immediately enlarged the pic to see the turtles, I looked and I looked and didn't see any dang turtles on a log and then I read your post. John asked, what are you laughing at?

jan said...

Ivy, really cute Pome and fits so well with Carol's new post and picture.

jan said...

Chloe, you found some turtles on a log.

I don't think we have turtles in NM. In Ark and OK we see them a lot crossing the road - but not here in NM. When its windy, we see a lot of tumbleweeds.

Albuquerque has the distinction of being a city with a high number of pedestrian deaths - so we get a lot of people crossing the road. I wonder what that says about Albuquerque - either a bunch of dumb pedestrians or a bunch of drivers not paying attention or maybe they are trying to hit pedestrians. We have one street, Central, that is old HWY 66 where a lot of pedestrians get hit. At one time there were lots of old cheap motels on Central and I suspect many of these dead pedestrians were drunk when they got hit. Central Ave. is called "The Drag" as it is the location of the main entrance to the UNM.

I am taking a couple of days and working at home. Have another sore throat and trying to head it off at the pass. John got me some lemons and I am trying an old home remedy of hot water with lemon juice and honey. If I had some bourbon - I would throw that in too.

I wrote a pome today. Hold your applause until the end.

One my way home from work today, I stopped and got a poetic licence.

Carol said...

Cute new avatar Chloe and you got that comment in just in the nick of time to get the last pic spot.

Great pome Ivy. Thanks. It inspired me to write my own. I want to use my new poetic license. Give it a little spin around the block.

Carol said...

Now Jan, I'm warning you, stay out of those bars. Don't want to get bumped off over at the UNM.

Solar said...

Don't quit U day job.! he he he.

The pic. that Chloe put up: there is five of those little turtles sitting on the log..pick the one that most resembles you.

Carol, Chloe, Coreen, Ivy, jan, went back and counted six, so Mary pick one too. I have already put names to them..so lets see how close I am to being right...all just a shell game right now.

Carol said...

Well Solar, I came up with my pome on my drive home today. It's only a 8 minute drive, what do you want? If it would haven't taken a little longer my pome might have been better.

Ivy Green said...

I love your original pome, Carol. Something for everyone.

Carol said...

Thank you Ivy.

I hope you can open this link to a heron versus turtles photo story.

Carol said...

Solar, I looked and I'm not on that log. I found you though. It is the one with his little ass showing, and harassing another turtle. Couldn't quite tell who that turtle was you were harassing.

Solar said...

Carol,

Just teasing U. I liked that pome.

You fit everybody in it..when I was reading it ..I was laughing all the while, reading it..nice job. Oh I can never do better..8 min. or 8 hrs.

Carol said...

That was a very cute sequence of pics of the turtles vs the Heron. Where do you find um Ivy?

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Marie Winn's site is one of my bookmarks. Central Park is an amazingly diverse environment. Hubs and I once spent a day exploring it. I was trying to find the famous red-tailed hawks which I didn't see.

Carol said...

Oh drats, Mary just reminded me that tonight is my NP meeting. They no longer let us get CEUs if a drug company picks up the tab so no CEUs. That was the main reason I was going, even though really good free food and drink was a nice plus.

I had already planned my menu for the evening.

Carol said...

I bet you have a very long bookmark section Ivy. Mine is getting pretty long also even though I haven't had this computer for very long.

Ivy Green said...

It may be a slow night here without you, Carol, plus I'm going out as well. Hubs has tickets to see The Wailers in concert. I hope it will be some good music. If it were up to me, I'd be home with a book.

(^_~)

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Will your ingredients hold out until tomorrow? Last night, Hubs made a great dish out of leftover chicken. It didn't look or taste anything like a left-over. But now there are left-over leftovers.

Chloe said...

Carol, That's a very cute poem you wrote there. You've definitely got talent.

If I'm one of those turtles on that log, I think it would be the one on the end that's off by herself. Either her, or the one in the middle that looks like she's ready to jump ship.

The same guy that took the pics of those turtles has some other interesting pics, one of which he just calls a 'critter'. I'm not sure what to call it; it doesn't look like Carol's gator though. At least some of them are taken in the Bahamas. http://www.flickr.com/photos/19638298@N00/sets/72157603412893447/

Have fun at your concert tonight Ivy.
Same with you at your NP dinner Carol. Chow down.

Me? I'm off to do the chores just like I do every night. See you all later.

Carol said...

Chloe the lizard in that pic looks like the Komodo dragon.

I guess I'll go to my dinner meeting. Can't pass up a free meal. Hope it doesn't last long.

Carol said...

Ivy, that storm that passed thru your area is really causing a stir over in Virginia. Has some 60 mph winds.

Carol said...

Ivy, some of the dinner I had planned is left over veggies from last night. I just had to pick out what meat I was going to cook. I had that picked out but it will keep.

Carol said...

If everyone is leaving, I guess Solar will have to hold up the log tonight.

Carol said...

Don't let any sneaky Herons on Solar.

Ivy Green said...

Not sure what to expect from The Wailers...the "Hemp Hut" could be interesting even though that is far from "my gig." Maybe a tee shirt for me...or the soap? I like soaps. lol

bump on the log, that is...but bump on the logo sounds funny.

jan said...

Carol, really cute pome. Hope its a great meal. Interesting that the BON will not grant you CEU's if the drug guys are paying. Bummer. I too would go for the food - and their meals sound good. Oh yeah, my bar-hoppin days are long gone.

Bar-hoppin was fun when I was in school - had lots of gals to go with- but working girls - at least in my age group are too busy.

jan said...

Solar, I will hold up the log with ya tonight.

The 3rd turtle from the left (on the log) has a crack in his shell. That would be me.

Oh, and Carol, Don't forget to share the menu with us. I'll check for it in the morning.

Jan, sorry to have missed you again. But I do always enjoy reading your posts.

Carol said...

Well I'm back and everyone is gone. I hope I didn't hurt any feelers with the parts you all played in my pome. Hey, I was checking for warts so I didn't get a really good part either. I had very little time to come up with somethin. There is always sacrifice with great art.

Carol said...

And Coreen, you haven't even checked in today. Where are you? I hope you aren't hanging around with any pigs. No disrespect to any of your friends, I am talking about the flu.

Carol said...

Ivy, I've never heard of the Wailers but Mary has. Amazing what all Mary knows. She must get around more than I do. I seldom leave the swamp anymore and for years I didn't watch anything but the news and they don't cover much of anything important except the world misery. I was pretty well schooled in misery.

Carol said...

And Jan, I'm sorry that you are cracked but hey it doesn't bother Solar. That is him hitting up on ya.

Carol said...

Oh, I think I might have told you this story but it goes along with the theme of the day.

I was somewhere, at some National Park or campground. I came up on this little turtle crawling slowly, in the middle of nowhere. I thought I would help that little turtle out so I picked it up and we drove that little turtle to a little lake that was there. I was sure that that it where it wanted to go. I set it down on the bank of the lake.

The little turtle had this real disgusted look on it's face. It turned away from the lake and headed back in the same direction it had been traveling. I probably just set that turtle back a couple of weeks on it's journey. Might have even died trying to make up for lost time.

The moral of that story is....don't think you are doing nature a favor by deciding what it needs, just let nature take it's own course.

I bet I got some bad turtle karma from that. I just recently worked off my bad snake karma. I think I did that when that snake dropped off my roof and almost hit me on the head. Cleaned my snake slate.

Coreen said...

Quick in & out...just trying to finish my project....

Carol, you are clever, witty & creative, you never have to second guess yourself...the poem was great.

How was your dinner?

And Jan, no you are gone already, but are you feeling better.

Have to try & do a little more tonite. See
you tomorrow.

Oh, by the way, the remnants of Ida are approaching, gray, overcast, very chilly, windy today, expecting the same for the weekend, with rain, but it will just skirt CT.

Carol said...

Thanks Coreen. Keep your seat belt on, that storm has some strong winds.

jan said...

Rats, I had a long comment and it disappeared. A little blog ghostie is hangin around.

Coreen, hope your weather is not too bad and blows over soon.

Chloe, good to hear from you. I am curious as to what chores you had tonight.

Carol, love your story about the turtle at the National park. Hmmm. I suppose we do that in our relationships with people - get off our intended path - maybe we get back on it and maybe not. I remember an interesting movie - about a young woman. The movie played out her taking two different paths in her life and how each turned out. Wish I could remember the name of it. I remember a revolving door - maybe that was the name - The Revolving Door. I must remember to look it up.

Good night all.

jan said...

Looked up The Revolving Door - definitely not it. I will think about it some more.

Good Night Irene, Good Night Irene. Carol, I have been humming that song all week. I looked it up last week on You Tube for your birthday -played several different versions - Now can't get it out of my head.

Carol said...

I smell a new post opportunity for someone today. Not this turtle.

Yep Jan, I think your body is telling you it's time to retire, that girls just wanna have fun. I think you have paid your dues.

You have all kinds of neat things you could do with your time. You have the kids, grandkids and fixing to have a great grandkid. Is that one the first?

You have your hobbies. You like to travel. Why is the hell are you still working? I know working can be fun and entertaining but it is an extra stressor.

Now me, I'll have to work until I drop or they put me in a home. Savings mostly gone. I don't really have any hobbies and I'm not discliplined. How many potted plants can you have and how many groceries can a place hold? And what can I use as an excuse not to clean house?

Carol said...

And if you want to truth of why I didn't have any pics of turtles on a log, it's because if you get close enough to take the pic, they all drop off. You have to use telephoto and that is not easy to do in a boat. You have to keep your camera really still when you use the zoom option.

Chloe said...

"The moral of that story is....don't think you are doing nature a favor by deciding what it needs, just let nature take it's own course."

Carol, I have screwed up so many times trying to mess with Mother Nature. Just thinking I knew better, so trying to help out.

I agree with what you said. We just don't always see the divine scheme of things from our limited picture. We need to leave it to the expert.

I don't think you got any bad karma from that though, because your intent was good. Just natures way of teaching you a lesson.

Chloe said...

"Chloe, good to hear from you. I am curious as to what chores you had tonight"

Hi Jan, good to hear from you too.
Those chores are the same ones I do 'everyday'. Caring for and feeding the animals, so they're settled settled down and safe for the night. Feeding and bathing Emma, tending to her needs, and making sure she's safely down for the night. Then all the usual stuff.

If I'm real lucky, I'll even have time to tend to myself. :) Ha! I have a 'lot' of animals Jan. Therefore I have a lot of work.
Then I start over again in the morning.

Chloe said...

... and still no vaccines in Texas yet, that I know of. Any we may have, have come and gone.

"Estimates of deaths caused by the swine flu have grown to nearly 4,000 since April, roughly quadrupling previous estimates. But that doesn't mean swine flu suddenly has worsened.

Instead, the federal numbers made public Thursday reflect a long-awaited better attempt to quantify the new flu's true toll. Most cases still don't require a doctor's care.

Swine flu has sickened about 22 million Americans since April and killed about 540 children.

And it's still early in the season.

"I am expecting all of these numbers, unfortunately, to continue to rise," said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have a long flu season ahead of us.

Thursday's report attempts to calculate the first six months of the new H1N1 strain's spread, from April through mid-October. The CDC said:

-- Some 98,000 people have been hospitalized from this new flu or its complications, including 36,000 children, 53,000 adults younger than 65 and 9,000 older adults." http://www.mail.com/Article.aspx/health/0/APNews/Health/20091113/U_US-MED-Swine-Flu?pageid=1

Jan, Is this Gwyneth Paltrow movie the one you're talking about?:

Sliding Doors (1998)

In parallel stories, this tale follows Helen's lives down both paths simultaneously, as two totally different futures unfold." http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1800024650/info

I don't think I saw it, so will see if I can rent it (or find it on TV)

Now to get to some more of that work I was talking about. It's much more fun to be here.

I just had to poke my head back in here long enough to mention that I just had the most beautiful deer run across the front of my horse, maybe 20' away from me. She was way to fast for me to even think about getting a picture, but here's one of the Whitetails little deer we have here in Texas. The very young ones are even smaller, and are as cute as can be. Chloe, You are amazing - Sliding Doors - that was it - and Gwenith Paltrow was the actress. You have a spectacular memory. I remember bits and pieces of things but the names of movies and actors escapes me. I think I will rent the movie and see it again.

Deer are such beautiful little creatures. I miss seeing them.

Several years ago on a trip to florida we stopped overnight in Gulfport Mississipi. On a walk on the beach we found a pretty shell and took it back to the motel with us along with some other smaller shells and placed them on the carpet. The next morning as I was gathering our belongings to leave, I noticed the larger shell was missing. I searched the floor and found the shell on the other side of the room. John told me this was a hermit crab. We began calling her Shelley. I had not visited many beaches before so this was a new creature to me. We took Shelley to North Carolina where we were staying for a week and put her on Wrightsville Beach just outside Wilmington. After reading Carol's story about the turtle - I now wonder if I screwed up Shelley's life. Maybe she had babies or a partner in Mississipi that she would never see again.

jan said...

Carol, I began thinking of retiring about 3 years ago, but was still having fun teaching. In August John had a fainting spell when he was trying to fix a flat tire and I thought he was having a heart attack. When he was out for a minute or so - I thought he had died. That was a "wake-up call" that we are not doing the things we want to do together.

jan said...

By the way John did not have to fix that flat tire - my son was on his way to fix it and we have AAA roadside assistance. John can be a little impatient at times. A night in emergency and a few $$$ later, he realizes that patience is indeed a virtue- and can save lives and money. The one good thing about the night in emergency is that his heart is great and he is in good health. He did get a big lump on top of his head b/c he hit something on his way down to the ground when he fainted.

jan said...

Chloe, you are a very busy woman. I think you said you have horses. Do you cows or pigs too?
