The Hunt for Orbs in Red October

Our quest for Orbs and their meaning takes us back to the North Sea Coast of Scotland. If ever there was a site ripe for spirited visitation, Dunnottar Castle may be it. Dunnottar is itself a ruin that bears mute testimony to untold suffering through battles, pillaging, imprisonment and torture. The very walls reek of these tales. The question for our ponder is, what do the Orbs tell?

Dunnottar's darkest moment came in May 1685 when 167 Covenanter prisoners, 122 men and 45 women, were locked in the Whig's Vault below one of the buildings in the Quadrangle. Some died of starvation and disease, while others were killed after trying to escape. The barely-surviving remnant were transported to the colonies where most died of fever.

These late-discovered photos are from the Hubs Camera purchased at Tesco (Scottish Walmart) when it appeared loss of our charger had left us battery-less in the middle of the trip. Happily it was not the case, so we were blessed with two cameras.

The Whigs' Vault photo is credited to the Dunnottar Castle official website.

Carol,
I do live 50 min east of Orlando on the Atlantic Coast..With I-4 its a quick trip..I live 180 miles North of your friend in Boynton Beach.

jan said...

Ivy, these are amazing pictures. Is that an orb in the right lower corner of the 1st picture?

Tony, so you are on the Atlantic coast. I have not visited there, but have visited the North Carolina atlantic coast - my favorite place in the U.S. How are your beaches? Do you have good places to look for shells?
Jan

Ivy, I blew up the top picture and there is a pink rim around the brightness in the top part of the picture. Is the brightness sun? I can also see a bird by the brightness.

jan said...

When I looked at the top pic again - the brightness looks like an orb and the bird is below the orb.

jan said...

In the 2nd pic of the vault it looks like a tiny orb in the floor of the vault.

Good Morning everyone.
Beautiful pictures Ivy! Doesn't it seem that every camera has a personality of it's own? I think that second camera was meant to be Ivy.

Tony, I'm linking that site that show's us how to link here. It's a little more involved, because it's not built-in to the blogspot programs the way it is at Craigs, where you simply copy it and then it turns itself into a link, when you enter it.

Take a look at what the link says, then I'll be more than glad to help you with it. It's set up to put words instead of a url address when it links here. But if you want the address, you just put the url in both places. Hopefully, this will make some sense when you see what I'm talking about.

Just leave me a note about anything on that site that 'doesn't' make sense, and we'll go over it.

http://exonous.typepad.com/mis/2004/10/creating_a_hype.html

... now on this one, I put the url address in the text part of the equation also. Or you can put actual text, and link it this way too:

How to hyperlink

Make sure you copy the line (from the hyperlinking instructions) that says 'Just type' (it's the fourth line down). Save that line on word pad or someplace you can always find it. Then all you have to do is fill in the part of the it asks for.

Anonymous said...

Also, wanted to mention that when we hit 200 posts on this site, then the posts don't show up on this page, but roll over to a new one. At that point, it looks like you're losing your posts, but in reality, they're just on the next page. What you have to do is go to the bottom of the page and click on the blue 'newest posts'. It's actually a hypelink that will take you to the page where all posts over 200 go. They're no missing, but are on page 2. It's funky, but it doesn't happen that often.

Anonymous said...

I shouldn't be calling it an equation, but rather a formula. At least that's the way I see it. A formula, where you just need to fill in the blanks.

Ivy,

Nice pics, once again; very nice.

The first one with the eagle, (bird) in the picture is my fav. for me it shows the spirituality that comes from Mother Earth: Can you imagine what the Astronauts see, looking down at us, and outer space.

I don't think that there are any orbs, in any of them...the one that Jan sees at the bottom right, could have been planned to let brightness in, to show a part of what time it was at that point, something that was important to them..

All of the ancient structures that has been built. Has been to study time, to be aware of the calender..and to make sure that you pick up your date on time...it;s just that sometime us dummies can't read it,,,and are sometimes late....once again thanks for sharing all of this with us...

Carol...a ponder for you:

Once when the whole world was just one continent, it was a whole world..as time went by,and evolution took hold, and the world dived into continents, was that a sign of how the evolved human race, was to be divided? was that planned by U know who...or was it just the way that nature operates......

2nd part...if it was planned: If it was planned, were so many things that are wrong with us planned also, or is it just the that nature works..nature is not perfect...the planner is said to be perfect....so the question of spirituality, is innate, or has it been given-planned to worship the planner????

I just noticed that I mostly close-end my post with what I think balance's out my start of one...I caught myself doing this a few times at tm......I just figured it out... it has to be that after working in advertising for 8 years...I still try to balance the page.!!

Ok im done...

jan said...

Wow, I just found all my lost posts. Ivy, Chloe - whoever said - look at the tiny link that says "newest" I did not realize that at 200 no more posts show and that you have to click on the "newest" link to see posts. A real aha experience. I knew I was missing conversations - I thought I was going nuts. Sometimes I have written posts 2-3 times -thinking they were lost.

Carol said...

Good Evening folkes. Great pics Ivy. I can't see any orbs but I'm sure there are some there.

I haven't read much in my orb book yet but I did read that you have to take hundreds of pics to catch orbs. That would be a little difficult to do when you don't have a camera recharger or at least don't think you have one.

I had lots of fun last night. I laughed all evening and went to bed still laughing. Ivy, I really had a good laugh trying to immagine a shark breaking into a house.

Chloe you slipped away. Did we overwhelm you with sensory overload?

Solar, I told you I don't have any answers, only questions. Who is the "you know who" you are talking about? Is it Ivy's sister, that passed? I doubt she is messing with any continents. Probably has more important things to do.

My little orb experience had a certain meaning to me which I did relate to you guys. It kind of unfolded in a sort of logical way. My problem is that I like things to be logical and these kind of things usually aren't.

Tony, I now know the area where you live. I even pulled up a Florida map to make sure I had it right. I had looked at where my other Florida friend, Linda, lives so I know when there are those bad storms threatening her area.

Linda, are you still dropping by to visit? I hope so and wish you would jump in and visit with us.

Brian Williams just mentioned on TV that Bo Obama did number 2 on Air Force One. I'm certainly glad there was enough time in that 30 minutes of national news to slip that in. Slow news day I guess.

Coreen, I see your Yanks are playing tonight. I guess you are excited. Since I don't have any preferences, I hope they win.

Jan, it was a hoot reminesing with you last night. Memories keep flooding back. The reason I am in most of your memories when you lived here is because I was always there when you lived here. I just went home to sleep.

Hey Chloe,
Did as you said.I just don't get how to copy and paste from the poster's comment and my reply?I haven't even gotten to linking another sight.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
I enjoyed your link to the Scottish Castle Orbs site and other photos it linked to. My big regret of the trip is not capturing any photos on the day of my big "owl hunt/nature walk," but some of the photos through these links brings it back to me. Thank you! lol

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I'm taking a broadly interpretive approach to the concept of orbs. It's one of those "touchy-feely" things that, as you suggest, defies logic ("these kind of things usually aren't")
and quantification. The search goes on...

Ivy Green said...

Tony,
I don't know that we have that technique here of linking to other comments the way we can on TM. It's just a different technology. I get around it by just copying the part of a comment I want to cite ("putting it in quotations") and then pasting it directly into the body of my reply. Hope that suggestion is helpful to you.

Carol said...

Last night Ivy, with all our talk of orbs, Maggie was hiding behind the couch. No storms so the room may have been full of visitors. I didn't take any pics. If they were here, I didn't want to know.

Carol said...

Tonight is Modern Family, 8p central time. Check it out.

Ivy Green said...

Tony,
I hope you keep trying. I enjoy your commentary and observations. Our Gentle Blog-master is very lenient on "mistakes."

Blog-master...what a great title! Almost as good as "Chief" which I once was advised in business is the best title of all to possess.
("Chief of what," I inquired. "Doesn't matter," came the response. "Just 'Chief' is plenty enough."

Carol said...

Why don't we vote on Chief. I don't want to be Chief. We could have an election. I nominate Chloe. She seems to know the most about how to do new things.

Carol said...

I've always been a better indian.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Lol. Maybe Maggie knew through these wireless signals that we here were busy medicating dogs. Our late-dog affectionately known as "Bailly-Monster" could smell a tube, bottle, or vial of pet meds a block away, tuck her tail and disappear under the couch, even if she was not the one getting treated. Never failed. She just knew.

Carol said...

Those dogs are psychic. I can think things like, I ought to take Maggie for a walk. She gets up and starts wagging her tail.

Tony, What Ivy said is the easiest way to do it. But if you want to link it, you do it the same way as that page shows. You right click on the blue date of the post you want to link, then click on 'copy link location', then paste it onto the formula where it says 'web address your linking to' and then also paste it where it says 'text you're link from'. Then preview it to make sure it turns blue. It can be a pain to mess with, but once you get it down, it gets much easier (although still a pain. :)

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
You have to be the Blog-master. It's the price of "birthing" this site. lol

Growing up, my favorite chief was "Chief Halftown" who I watched on TV every afternoon. I'm sure my respect for Native American culture was inspired by him.

Hi ya Carol and Ivy too.

Carol, I said I was leaving about three times last night, but I think you've stopped noticing it, because I never go the first time and usually not the second time I say it either. No one believes me when I say I'm leaving, because I keep talking.

I'm still catching up, but whatever a chief it, no.. not me!

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
How did you do that? Did I miss a lesson? I must have dozed off in class. Can I take a make-up lesson? Tutoring? Remedial education?

jan said...

Lobie is psychic too - I swear she does the same thing as Maggie - when I think about a walk she comes trotting to where I am with her tail swinging from side to side.

I like "Gentle Blog Master"

Carol, Maggie may have been responding to your "thoughts" of orbs. Lobie is so responsive to our moods.

My boys thought you were "aunt Carol." I enjoyed our trip back to memory lane.

When we first met Lobie in Ark. she would come up to us wagging her tail when we were thinking about adopting her and she would keep her distance when we were thinking "we don't really want the responsibility of a dog right now" -
That sounds cruel, but I was going to be away Mon-Fri in a job too far to drive home every night, and John was busy with a new church and did not know if he would be around to take care of her needs.

I got a little moving picture of one of my hummer's fluttering around outside the window just before dark. It's a little pitiful, because I'm a pitiful picture taker (I'm not even going to use the word photographer, because I don't come close). May if I start taking more, I'll actually improve.

I'm going to see if I can link it here from photo bucket. Hummingbird outside my window

Carol said...

Never heard of that Chief Ivy. Didn't look familiar either.

I don't think we need a Chief. It's more fun just having a bunch of indians running around this reservation.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
Oh, you just 'splained it all. My bad. :)

... it's on the right side, and takes several seconds before you see it, then it lands on a tree limb for a couple of seconds, so watch closely.

jan said...

My last post sounds so defensive. John and I both feel guilty that we even thought of not adopting Lobie.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Chief was a local tv personality where I grew up. We kids never missed a show. It came on right after the Mickey Mouse Club. My mom knew she could park us all in front of the television for at least that hour and we'd be still.

Anonymous said...

Yes, dogs are very intuitive.

Ivy, do you mean the linking thing? If so, it's a lot easier to do it the way you said. I'm not sure Tony will want to mess with that formula we use.

Jan, I was thinking you might enjoy photo bucket for all your great pictures. Your husband could upload them all to a sight there under you name, and anytime you have new photos, you could just link them here. If you're interested, just let me know. It's very simple and it's free.

Unknown said...

"Hope that suggestion is helpful to you."

Ha,yes Ivy it did,easy.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
Your video was great. You got a little female ruby-throat there. Did you see her land momentarily on the tree branch behind the feeder?

Liked hearing that fussy-baby in the background. Let us guess who that was?

Anonymous said...

"John and I both feel guilty that we even thought of not adopting Lobie."

Nothing wrong with that Jan. The important thing is that you made the right decision.

jan said...

Chloe, thanks for sharing your photo bucket. I love your hummer video. So cute. Is the baby in your photo bucket Emma? She is so adorable. Who are the others in your picture bucket.

Yes, I would love to know how to upload the photo bucket.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
What exactly is Photo-bucket anyway? Thanks,

Carol said...

Chloe, did you take that video with your digital camera? I haven't ever done that with my camera even though I know it can do that. See, you know how to do more than I do.

I found the instructions to my camera online and have it bookmarked. I have to refer to it when I want to figure out how to do something new. The directions still aren't very clear. Don't really tell you exactly how to do things.

Today I thought my hummers had all left but a few did show up later.

Ivy Green said...

"I don't think we need a Chief. It's more fun just having a bunch of indians running around this reservation."

Carol,
I agree with that. But we do need a Blog-master and you're "it." lol

Anonymous said...

Yes Ivy, You know who that was. They were outside the room, but the camera apparently has a very sensitive mike.

jan said...

I agree, I like the idea of all of us "indians running around the reservation" Here in NM some of the Native peoples live in pueblos - those of you familiar with NM and Arizona know this - Taos Pueblo is the most famous. The Navajos (the largest tribe here) live on the "rez" or Reservation.

Ivy Green said...

Jealous of you hummer-keepers. I will be curious to know if your farther-south birds leave on exactly November 1. Mine are flown the coop. No signs of them since their marked-date of September 30.

Anonymous said...

Carol, No I don't know more things.
I have a menu button, and I messed around with it until I got to the video part of it, and clicked ok. It's the first time I did it, because I couldn't catch one of them in a still shot, no way. Even in that one, they're very hard to see. I want to get a tripod, so I'm not moving all over the place, but if I leave the camera sitting there, it'll run out of battery. It's tough with those little fluttery birds.

jan said...

Off to fix some supper - I am cooking some whole wheat pasta and sauteing some onions in olive oil and adding some tomatoes, button mushrooms and some artichoke hearts -to go over the pasta - yummy and easy. I only do easy. Back later.

Sorry, I missed some posts.
Ivy, photo bucket allows you to set up your own page with your personal photos, so you can give friends the link and they can go there and look too, if you want them too. As I start taking pictures, I'll probably start storing some their too. You get a log in just like you do at google or TM.

This is the sign up page if you want to just check it out.

Photo Bucket

Also, Carol has a 'very' nice photo bucket page, with beautiful pictures of her river, Maggie. Maybe she'll link it for us.

Ivy Green said...

Jan, your onions remembered me this story.
I had an older relative whose husband always expected his evening meal to at least be "in the works" when he got home. She was always late getting home with nothing planned. She figured out if she started by frying onions in a pan, and he smelled them when he came through the door, he'd be happy enough while she figured out what she was really going to cook.

Anonymous said...

You mean you're a quick learner and never forget!

Anonymous said...

Ivy, I don't know when those hummers leave, maybe Carol does. I have a lot of birds that seem to stay here year round, at least the last few years. Maybe because it's been warmer.

Chloe,

Carol said...

I wonder if your friend always had onions in what she was cooking for the night. But the smell of onions cooking is a good appetite stimulant.

Ivy, I'll let you know when all the hummers leave but I do think I have some that stay all year. Maybe they are retarded hummers and don't realize they should leave or maybe just lazy. It is a long flight.

Anonymous said...

To answer your question more directly, no, I've had no trouble. I love photo bucket. It's very simple and self explanatory. It even has a tutorial, which I didn't go to, because it does most everything for you anyway. You just click upload picture, the same as you do with Carols blog.

Ivy Green said...

Ivy, regardless, those onions are a darn good idea, if you want to fake someone out. Plus, I love that smell. I'd love to come home to the smell of onions. As a matter of fact, I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it.

Hi everyone, I see that you have been pretty busy tonite.

Chloe, nice catch of the hummingbird. I have
only seen one here earlier this summer, but just once.

Yankee game is over, they did win 7-2, so 1 down, 2 more to go for this series.

This taking pictures thing--now I've been
taking my little Canon with me everyday, just in case something looks promising. See what you
started Carol.

Ivy, I have a question for you. I know you are
very fond of Helen Keller, and was wondering
what was the origin of that interest. I know
you use the name of her Alabama home for posting.

You may not know, but Arcan Ridge was here in
Easton. Not sure if the house still stands, do
you know?

Anonymous said...

Ha, ha!

Coreen, glad to have been a torment to you. See Chloe, a little pressure never hurts. Congrats to your Yanks.

Drats, it's past 9p and time for my bedtime ritual. Maggie must go poddy first. Come on Maggie, lets go.

Ivy Green said...

Coreen's post

Thank you, Coreen. I actually wasn't familiar with Arcan Ridge, but I am now, thanks to you.

As a place, "Ivy Green" was also the address of my first house, plus the Alabama connection now that I am here, plus the "aura" of Helen Keller is always present for me in that way we've talked about on this site regarding "synchronicity." For example, in Boston this summer, I looked up and saw a huge billboard that said, "Helen Keller could only see possibilities." She's just there when I need her, and even when I don't realize I need her.
(^_~)

jan said...

I did not know Ivy Green was the name of Helen Keller's home.

Carol & Chloe, Love your photo buckets. I will see what I can do to get some photos on line. I am like Chloe - mostly pictures of family and Lobie.

Carol said...

Chloe, Tony is the one who gave me the idea of the slideshow for photobucket. He had his pics on a slideshow. I found that option on the upper right side of the page. I just link my pics as a slideshow instead of album.

Supper turned out good. I too love the smell of onions cooking. My husb does not cook but he is always willing to take me out to dinner - so I can't conplain. He does not expect me to cook - he will fix something for himself - but I had promised him that dish tonight.

jan said...

Carol, I am recording Modern Family. I think it will be a hit. The 2 guys and baby are the best part. I am going to hit the bed early, I had an upset stomach this morning - but I think its nothing. H1N1 has really hit our schools here. A 5 year old at my granddaughter's school died last week of H1N1 -she had nausea and vomiting - no fever- she died of dehydration 3 hours after she got to the hospital. We have had 2 teens in the state die of it too. I am not too worried about it for me - It is supposed to be the same as the one in 1957 and I had pneum that year - so I think I might be immune.
Well, nite all.

Ivy Green said...

Carol's photo bucket is wonderful. I'd seen only selected pics until now. Love the rainbow. Did you come face-to-face with that 'gator, Carol? I'd forgotten him too. Like I said, I'm a quick forgetter...lol

Ivy Green said...

Jan, that's alarming to hear about the flu getting that close to home.

Glad your dinner was a success.

Coreen said...

Thanks Ivy. Now it seems you have a Helen
connection to CT. I will do a little checking
to see if Arcan Ridge perhaps still exists.

Although I am not a cook at all, KGC has a nice webpage 'Seasonal Pantry' where she
writes about food, recipes.(There's a link at
Craig's Place) She is very interested in food safety, fresh, organic foods. I envy her that
she has fresh veggies/fruits virtually all year. KGC lives in northern California, near Bethy.

And for now, goodnight.

Ivy Green said...

Thanks, Coreen. Your post and my inquiry into "Arcan Ridge" led me to more Helen Keller links and another book for my library. It was synchronistic. I haven't been to the birthplace in Tuscumbia, but I'm hoping we can visit there soon. Every summer they stage performances of "The Miracle Worker."

Carol said...

Yes, I would be kind of nice to live in Southern California with all those fresh veggies and fruit all year long. Well if I had the time, I could probably grow things all year long around here but my hard labor days are over.

Of course with the earthquakes, the fires and the ecomony in California, I stick right here. La. is getting richer by the day if you compare it to other states. And if the economy gets too bad I can probably find all I need to eat right out here on the river. I could use a little help from Stinky though. You know, to figure out which plant I can safely eat.

Carol said...

That gator in my photobucket was taken by Randal the riverrat nurse. I was probably yakking over at the Trail when that fellow crossed the road. It doesn't happen very often, but that gator caused a disturbance down the road. I think even Mary happened out here at the time. I'm probably the only one on the road who didn't know what was going on.

Carol said...

That flu does worry me a bit. I wasn't at first but I keep hearing of people dying everyday even around here. I heard we had three more deaths in SW La the other day. They are young people or pregnant women.

I'm not worried for myself but for my peeps in the jail. I think we have had that flu in the jail twice, at least Once I documented it and the other I just suspected it.

The first time was before I even knew there was a new flu around. Last Spring we had two young guys suddenly come down with pneumonia. I thought at the time, this is very weird. Both recovered. It was about a month later that the news of this new flu came out.

Government is providing lots of vacines, I hear. We are trying to decide who we will vacinate first.

Carol said...

Jan, I'm glad your husband doesn't make you cook every night. I'd have to come over there and get your head examined if he did. There are lots of ways to provide quick and easy dinners. I come up with them all the time.

Sams has this really tasty salmon even if you don't like salmon. I think it is called Morey's seasoned wild salmon. It's in a yellow box. You can smell it cooking down the block. It comes vac packed in individual bags. Pop that in the oven and fix a veggie.

Since I found that salmon, I fix it several times a week and when Maggie smells it cooking she is excitedly waiting for her share and she usually won't eat seafood.

Carol said...

Mary keeps telling me of my mispelled words here. I tell her that it's the beauty of this blog. You can misspell words, either accidentally or on purpose. Of course, I'm always doing it on purpose, wink, wink.

And Jan, the two guys who adopted the baby, on Modern Family, are my favorite also. On last night's episode they were shopping at Cosco. We have Sam's here, no Cosco.

With all my talk of WM and Sam's, I ought to put an ad on this site.

That is what I love about this blog is that it does not matter about mispellings or grammar or whatever. I cannot help correcting my grammar and spelling before I post - just too ingrained after so many years of teaching, but I love the way we can just write what we are thinking. My husb is on his computer a lot connecting with his brother and buds in all parts of the country. I did not spend time on computer except for work before this. I have lost touch with so many friends - so now I have old and new friends here. I love getting on and seeing what you guys are saying even if I have nothing to contribute. I feel comfortable just lurking until I have something to say. I love all the pictures too.

Carol, thanks for the info about salmon at Sams. We belong to Costco here - so I loved the segment last night of the guys in Costco. Reminded me of my first trip there. I wanted to buy everything. My husb "reels me in" They have salmon there too so I will check it out.

This will sound wierd to some of you - but we live 3 blocks from the Univ hospital and when I don't want to cook or go out, I have husb drive me to the front entrance of the hosp and I go up and get us 2 carryouts of something to eat in the cafeteria. It is pretty good food. The do great fried chicken - tastes just like my mother used to make. There is always mashed potatoes and gravy which is something I never make and its comfort food for both of us.

My husb was single for 10 years before we married and he was used to taking care of himself - and his meals. I never feel I need to cook for him. If I don't fix something, he will either cook something for himself or go out and get himself something to eat. That is a big relief. After many years of being responsible for meals, I don't want to do that anymore.

This is an interesting link in my e-mail this morning from the Univ of Texas - 2 Harvard researchers have published a paper on "Why pregnant women don't tip over." Thought I would share.

I don't know how to post a link so you can just go in and click to see the info.

Practice, practice

Jan,
Are you referring to "Lower Alabama?" :)

P.S. If I don't keep practicing this new procedure, I'll forget it quick as I can blink...

Jan,
I'm trying to figure out what the heck is an "Ig Nobel Prize?"

"achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think"

It did that...lol

Ivy, thank you for posting the link so one can just click on the link.
I don't know what you mean "Are you referring to "Lower Alabama?" :)" I guess its meant for fun - if so :) right back at ya! LOL

I thought it was so funny that researchers would actually study "why women don't tip over while they are pregnant" but when you think about it the physiological information as to this phenomenon is most interesting and maybe have some bearing on issues related to pregnancy. I am an old OB nurse and am most interested in anything related to pregnancy and birth.
