Time travels--- part-one

The idea of time traveling into the past has numerous conceptual difficulties. The following paradox is well known: How about going back into the past and killing your own father before he even meets your mother? Then, you wouldn't be born. But if you're out of existence, who killed your would-be father?

Such hypothetic scenarios prevent many people from believing time travel is possible. However, the general theory of relativity allows various space-time deformations to take place and Kurt Gdel, the famous mathematician, managed to prove that, according to this theory, time travel into the past can in principle exist (see the "worm hole" in the picture below).

Time travel isn't explicitly made impossible by quantum mechanics either. On the contrary, one's sense of causality is deeply challenged by it.

Some science-fiction writers tried to get around the paradoxes of time travel by using the idea of parallel universes. When one would go into the past and change something, the universe would continue on a different path. But the original universe would still continue to exist in parallel. This Oedipus time traveler comes from one universe and kills his father in a different universe.

By studying this science-fiction
idea with the help of quantum mechanics, three physicists, Daniel M. Greenberger and Karl Svozil on one hand and David T. Pegg on the other, have arrived to the same conclusion independently.

The idea in quantum mechanics is that all the possibilities do exist simultaneously in some abstract way, but they are not parallel, they influence each other. What is actually seen to happen is the result of a certain averaging process over all these possibilities - all the possible universes influence each other and blend together giving rise to the real universe. In this way, one can take into consideration even universes where time flows from future to the past - this is why quantum mechanics isn't explicitly and a priori anti-time-travel.

However, what Greenberger, Svozil and Pegg have found is that as time flows, the alternative universes that could have happened but haven't happened, get erased - these past alternatives cancel each other. Thus, if someone would manage somehow to go back into the past, one wouldn't see the universe as it was back then, one would see a simplified universe which is compatible solely with what has actually happened.

I thought I would start with Jan's hypothetical question; and will make a 2nd post that we can all tell... whom; when; why; we would like to see; share sometime with; from the past....I had 5 candidates going in...and finally settled on the one, that I think would be the most interesting and fun for me...a virtual trip would be worth the money to meet this person; instead of a complete vacation any where in the world. think about it and we can have fun on part two of this..sorry, but there is so much to talk about..that I felt getting the tech stuff out of the way first..would make the 2nd part a little fun.

The pic above is that of a worm-hole: This is where scientist believe time travel could be made possible.

Every time you look at the sky, you travel back in time... in a sense.

When you look at a star which is 100 000 light-years away, you see it as it was 100 000 years ago. Its light has needed all that time to get to your eyes.
So what does this star look like ‘now’? There is no way to know, unless you wait 100 000 years for when the light emitted at that moment will reach the Earth (but then it won't be ‘now’ anymore!).
The Sun is a closer example. The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away from the Earth, and the speed of light is about 300 000 kilometres per second. So the light coming from the Sun needs about eight minutes to reach the Earth. The result is that every time you look at the Sun, you see it as it was eight minutes ago.

Maybe part 2 is not needed. We can just combine it all in the comments box..like we always do.

Great post, Solar. Stunning photo.

Good time to insert news about the Super Collider. I would love to be as smart as a rocket scientist, but they're way over my head. Pardon the pun. Well, no, it was on purpose. lol

Ivy,

Thanks, Cern is another fascination of mine. Hope they get off the ground this time around..they have tried once before..but no go.

This is getting closer to the Jewish God concept of no time, the great I AM. Perhaps we exist as a constant, but our mind perceives time until we can accept the concept of life without a stream of time.

Nice to see you here 6p_________ have a nick name? sounds like something a friend of mine would say...

Don,

Funny, but the only thing that-that name would catch over here at the swamp is a Pr-historic Beaver that we have been after..glad that you made it..I knew that sounded like you.

Thats an interesting thought..will have to think about it a little..

As the post indicates: On a past post we were pondering something that we were talking about..and it led us to ask each other...
Whom we would like to meet the most, if we could travel back in time....
I had about six people..and we will comment of these as soon as all of the gals get back from whatever they do all day....shopping...but should be fun..not too much disagreement goes on here..
just a lot of sharing interest; and thoughts..
welcome..Oh about you sending me a e-mail telling me that you are not surprise that I landed on a blog filled with women..and im the only man.....well just remember the Man rule....lookie, but no....

there is this one though that you might...naw..never mind.

Solar, what a fascinating post. I am intrigued. My husb John is the one who has always been interested in the stars and space and all of this stuff. But your post makes me want to learn more. The picture of the worm hole is beautiful.

Hi Carol, would love to hear more about what you are learning today about women and stuff. What do you think of the new guidelines about self breast exam and mammograms?

Hi Mary, sorry you are having such crappy weather. I have heard it said that if you were on an island and could only have one food - the best food would be dog food because it has all the nutrients we need. Interesting thought. Well, gettin hungry so better rustle up some food - sorry Mary- and then back to the quilt.

"Perhaps we exist as a constant, but our mind perceives time until we can accept the concept of life without a stream of time."

Now that seems kinda close to what I quoted from an article yesterday, that time is just a man made concept, and therefore there is no place to travel. I have trouble thinking that there is any place or time in 'the past' to visit. Seems to me that the past exists only in our memories, in the same way that the future exists only in our imagination.

I mean, I obviously have no understanding of this whatsoever, but there are so many variables and so many yet undetermined possibilities, that it's just mind boggling to imagine the possibility of traveling into the future, 'unless' there were some way to speed things up so much, that we'd just be there. But once we got there, there we'd stay, because I don't think it will ever be possible to go backwards.

Anonymous said...

Hi Solar, I have a lot of questions, but first I'm hoping to hear what 'you' think. I'm not clear on that. I'm wondering if you 'really' think time travel into the past and/or future is possible.

I think if we did ever get to the point of manipulating time, then we'd also be able to manipulate the aging process. Now 'that' would really interest me.

Anonymous said...

"... if someone would manage somehow to go back into the past, one wouldn't see the universe as it was back then, one would see a simplified universe which is compatible solely with what has actually happened."

See what I mean. This theory is that even if you went back, you would actually be there in the way you think of it. You'd be in a simplified universe. Which makes 'no' sense to me.

Solar said...

Chloe,

We have been manipulating time. All of the ancient cultures have also. I do think that time is a reality; but not what we have made it.

Life itself is time...we are part of the whole Galaxies..Universe, and can see that the larger stars like us ( we are energy just like all stars and composed of the same chemicals etc.;just smaller) and we can see when their time has run out.

But as I have said before..like an off and on switch...life is on, and not existing in our present form of life is off...the in between could be trillions of years in between..we won't ever know..cos we can't.

Solar said...

Chloe,

It is, or will be possible, will it be like you or I think it will be, and understand it..don't know.

The worm hole is the key to it all.

Right now; it seems to be very weak..it fades on its self..when light enters it-it becomes stronger.and lasts longer...they are working on it give them time..

Remember that I posted about the way's that we manipulate time; last year...I also made a post about the people in Britan, and how the government took a few hrs away from them...to adjust for the year...

the people pitched a bitch, and demanded their time back.....they said that they were being robbed of life....reality is not what we think most of the time..or what we are made to think thr habit???

Anonymous said...

".life is on, and not existing in our present form of life is off."

I can comprehend the on and off switch, but isn't that just a way of making it easier to understand. I mean, when the switch is off, that would be what happened in the past, right? When the switch is off, then the past no longer exists.

Anonymous said...

"reality is not what we think most of the time..or what we are made to think thr habit???"

Oooh, now I have to say that reality is whatever we make it. This is where you and I always part ways in our thinking Solar. Isn't it?

Solar said...

Chloe,

Yes for us as humans..but as far as time..it is just continueing as long as the universe is expanding..and existing..when it (some say) becomes all dark matter,or non energy it will start all over again...

There are new concepts of the how the universe started..and that it might never end...but maybe it will cos we looked into dark matter..and changed its course...

Solar said...

Ivy,

Posted a very interesting link at TM yesterday, and here today, about Cern's Collider, it will try to look into the beginning of time...as the big bang, began...now this is a completely different world that is atom size and smaller, and where string theory has been trying to explain, at times not so well; but there are a lot of scientist that have faith in it and something new is always coming out to disprove it or replace it, or improve it....thats what so exiting about it all...

but all in all there has to be a group of scientist that prove you wrong or right...no in between or false writings, you must prove your theory...period..or it is not real...

Solar said...

Chloe, sorry, but being afraid of post's being erased, Im not refreshing..so maybe I will slow down..but one question lead to another related answer...understand??

Anonymous said...

"time..it is just continueing as long as the universe is expanding..and existing"

Ok, I was just thinking about humans, because we were the ones thinking about time travel - but now I can see what you're talking about, and my looking at it the wrong way, may be what's always confused me.

I know everything living is energy, and as far as the concept of how the universe started, well that's just a theory anyway.

You are so right Solar. It's taken me a while to understand how that works, but I get it now and completely agree. I have a very good feeling about how it works, but it's been a little hard for me to incorporate the whole 'universe' into my thinking (for some unknown reason) and I tend to think only of the earth. I guess I keep my world way too small. But I find it very interesting the way you always think in terms of the 'whole universe'.

Anonymous said...

LOL Ivy Ivy, you're going to get me seeing double double too too.

I can't see straight or hear straight. Band practice is happening in the Man Cave. I'm not for sure, but from what I hear wafting up from there, a riffed-up version of "Little Drummer Boy" is on the play list for the boy band's Christmas party concert. lol

Now that I think about it, it's rather odd that I haven't thought about things more in terms of the whole universe. I've heard you do it for a long time Solar, and it just never registered. But it has now.

I was hoping to see Carol home safely, before I left, but I'm sure Mary would have let us know if she were in any trouble. Carol will need time to reunite with Maggie, and trying to get things back to normal. I imagine she'll be pretty busy for a while.

On group of studies (science) leads to another, and the way that they all share info no with the comp..it is an exiting time..and will be for the people that take their heads out of the sand..

Home again, home again, jiggity jig. And I got to keep up that jigging cuz it's 55 puny degrees in here. I've got every thing that puts out heat on, even some porrage in the little oven. OK it's not exactly porrage, it's a chicken pot pie. I don't have time to whip up a gourmet meal tonight.

Haven't had time to read posts or comments yet and looking at the beginning of Solar's post I will need to go get a degree in quantum physics before I do.

6p0......., is that anything like that H1N1. More like the elephant flu or maybe the dinosaur flu with all those numbers and letters. What are the symptoms? Deadly, I bet.

Did ya think you were going to be incognito Don? Welcome to the Swamp.

It was not a good trip back. I got caught in a traffic jam for about an hour. At least I didn't have to drive alone. I had Navi and Iphoney with me. We shared the last half of my expensive coke and some gummy worms and chex mix, both equally expensive.

My thumbs are a little disappointed that I don't need them much tonight. And you can't use your thumbnails with Iphoney, you have to use that 2mm of skin on the side. It's a real challenge and I was getting pretty good at it. And they say you can't teach an old dog...

Well now to do some reading while I eat my porrage. Beats gummy worms.

Solar said...

See U tomorrow..will let u catch up with the rest..cept Coreen..I think she went dancing without me......later.

Now we can rest easy that our Carol is safely back. How many CEU's was the worth, Carol, and does that put you where you need to be to stay "valid?"

That's an interesting post Solar but I'm going to need quite a while to digest it. I bet I have some worm holes out here. But in order to travel thru them I'll have to go on a much more serious diet than I had planned. And I don't pitch the worms, they make great bait.

Here's a contest I'm sorry I missed... The world porridge-making championship is held each October in Carrbridge, Scotland. The winner receives "the Golden Spurtle." A "spurtle" is a foot-long wooden kitchen tool that resembles a baseball bat and dates back to 15th century Scotland, and is used for stirring the proverbial porridge. Perish the thought, but this year's winner was an American. "May I have some more, please..."

The Golden Spurtle

Carol said...

Hey Ivy, I saw one of those things at Walmart in the BBQ section. Really. Looks like a cross between a bat and a paddle.

Nope, that's not it. It must be the cajun version of the Spurtle. Ours is called a spaddle.

Just got on - that quilt is killing me. My back is hurting from sitting at the sewing machine. Almost got all the pieces sewn together - you know it is a "pieced" quilt.

Mary, I love making quilts. I don't think I gave myself enough time for this one. I have been working on it non stop today - putting all the pieces together. several quilts I have made have been in quilting classes. That is the best way to go. Going to a class every week keeps you going and its fun to meet other people who quilt. Do you have any quilt stores in LC?

I don't think they have any quilting stores here. We just have Michaels and Hobby Lobby. We don't have any bead and gemstone shops here either. Ever since I started doing jewelry, I have dreamed of opening a bead store and as soon as I win the lottery, I'm going to. The craft stores only have about 1 or maybe 2 isles with beads/gemstones. I have to order most of my stuff online. I guess one of the craft stores would have quilting supplies in them.

Mary said...

Maybe a space ship landed there or maybe that's where the ETs are listed.
Carol,
Or maybe that's where the government is spying on us. They can listen to our phone calls and now we have to do all our charting on the computer(probably a way for them to see all our medical history). Believe me, it's not to save paper because now 1 patient instead of using a piece of a tree needs a whole forest.

Mary said...

FYI, I forgot the quote marks above about the space ship. That was a comment Carol made about the area listed on the "who's among us" map that had 36 followers.

Carol said...

Ivy, ya taught me about porridge. I didn't spell it wrong without help now. I used my google trick and they helped. Actually others must spell it wrong also. And I learned that is it for breakfast when I really thought it was some kind of soup like food. Interesting.

It actually sounds quite awful. And to think the have a contest for it. What in the hell could you do to make that more interesting. Down here we would put a chicken in it, some roux, bell pepper, onion and garlic and some Tony's and we'd call it gumbo.

It's nice to have a world traveler here at the Swamp to teach us all about those worldly things.

Carol said...

And Mary, what you talking about, you already have a bead store going at your house. You just need to put your sign out.

Like probably Jan with her fabric and Coreen with her yarn, and me with my sporting goods/fishing stuff, we all probably enjoy collecting the stuff as much as we like using it.

Carol said...

And another theory about that group up there without a town, it might just be a Sarah fan club also. They might have seen the post the other day and dropped in. Or it could be a quantuun physics class that signed up for Solar's class.

Carol said...

And Ivy, do you like that porridge? I still would rather some bacon, grits or country fried potatoes and it shows.

I told ya'll this girl down at the quick stop on my way to work, always fills my breakfast tray full, and I mean full, of bacon and country fried potatoes when I go in to get my takie outie breakfast in the morning. The portion size would feed my entire staff and I do share it but it is so good that I eat more than I should before giving the rest away.

I have wanted to tell that girl that I don't need that much food but I can't bring myself to do it. Actually, my peeps at work wouldn't like it if I did.

That girl did move out of town several weeks ago and I thought that God was trying to help me out with my self control issue by getting her out of there. I was a little sad about her leaving but I knew if was for the best.

Two weeks later she was back. God decided I needed to learn self control without any help.

Carol said...

I bet ya'll are gonna bed sad that I am back on a regular keyboard where I can yack, using more words and taking up more space, than I could on little Iphoney. But if I would have had more time at that conference I could have learned to burn up that little keyboard also.

Mary said...

Carol
I was just watching the video about the porridge making contest and I was thinking it sure looked like oatmeal and sure enough, that's what it is. Just flavored up a little.

Mary said...

Which brings back memories. Remember when we were young and Mom used to make oatmeal. We hated it so one time she made some and put a litlle in the dogs bowl and said if the dog ate it, we would have to. The dog didn't eat it. Thank goodness. We were probably giving the dog bacon under the table to keep her from eating it.

Carol said...

And did anyone listen or watch the LSU game yesterday? I know I coulda coached that team better than whoever was doing it. And I know nothin about football.

At the end, they were behind, looked like it was all over but the crying. Then they intercepted a pass in the final minutes of the game, they coulda kicked a field goal to tie it up but there was no field goal team ready and waiting. They lost. Somebody needs to be fired and real quick!

Carol said...

And the 36 visitors has been erased from that unknown area in the middle of the map. If you missed seeing it, too late.

Glad to see you're happily at home Carol. Betch Maggie was sure glad to see you.

The huge headline on Drudge report this morning is: THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE: $300 MILLION FOR MY VOTE! Your senator is doing a good job representing your state's needs (she's against single payer though).

Sweeteners for the South
"On the eve of Saturday's showdown in the Senate over health-care reform, Democratic leaders still hadn't secured the support of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), one of the 60 votes needed to keep the legislation alive. The wavering lawmaker was offered a sweetener: at least $100 million in extra federal money for her home state.

And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote -- and to trumpet the financial "fix" she had arranged for Louisiana. "I am not going to be defensive," she declared.

She argued, a bit too strenuously, that "I'm not thinking about my reelection" in 2010. All the same, she made clear that Democratic leaders would have to give more if they want her to vote yes as the health-care debate continues. Specifically, she demanded removal of the public option. "I am opposed to a new government-administered health-care plan," she warned, further cautioning that "I will not vote in favor of the proposal . . . as it is written."

By the time this thing is done, the millions for Louisiana will look like a bargain. "And it's not a $100 million fix. It's a $300 million fix." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/21/AR2009112102272_pf.html

You cook it a little longer, but it's worth it. I don't like "instant oatmeal," and the only reason we have any in the pantry is because Hubs' prefers it (yuk).

dismiss the idea of time travel, via wormholes
(Stargate) or by the good old Star Trek beam me up method, it is interesting to know that scientists continue the search.

Wonder is it something in the human condition that causes us to seek what at any point in 'time' would be considered
unattainable...

The concept of traveling through time seems to
have lured us for a very long time, not sure
who first talked about it, but HG Wells, a
master storyteller about time travel, comes to mind.

Still not sure I could name just one person,
place or time to go back & visit, but here's
some that come to mind....Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Shakespeare, Elizabeth I, Cleopatra, Alexander the Great & I for one would really like to know about the story of
Christ, as it unfolded.

Not really sure I'd like to re-visit prehistoric times, to many reptiles roaming about. Might like to see what the Roaring 20s
was really like, & were the Gardens at Babylonia as beautiful as reported.

Glad to see that all things here have returned
to normal...

Carol, glad your back problems have gone away.
Sorry to hear that it was so cold when you arrived home. It has been a great week here, especially for November.

Coreen said...

Jan,

Know that back pain well when concentrating on
finishing a project, but once I'm finished, the
success sees well worth it, this week I had to
stop working on my afghan, since my neck & shoulders were sore from embroidering the angel.

Solar said...

Coreen,

Thanks, glad that you posted the people that you would most like to visit from out past. Will think about them..

I will do the same later on. About your neck and back; along with those the pills that you take (I do too) you can also do some stretching exercises...

I don't have a headboard (took it off) on my bed..the first thing that I do; before I get up is do some isometrics; against the wall..on my back I reach with both hands and put them on the wall, and push..this helps the whole back and spine..I have degenerative disc disease. and gets me going for the morning..bring up both knees to my chest for a count of 30-50 and Im ready for the morning..

during the day when my back and neck start to hurt..I do a few minutes of youga; yoga not youga; do both :-)....every other day or 3 times a week I hit the gym, for a heavy work out..

for pain I have refused all medicine except Gabapentin, which I have to have.

I do a few Denise Austin yoga stretches......sorry if this is too much, and you probably already are doing... Denis has some u-tubes that can be down-loaded..Sea might use them for her "fabulous firm ass" hey Im just quoting ...

Coreen said...

Solar, I excluded pesonal, family, friends since I would think that most of us would always love the opportunity to know are own
ancestors.

And those on the list are just a few that came to mind, & even in posting it, probably should
have said hg wells as well, his vision as a
man of his times, wonder what a mind he had that thought of such unknown things at the time, & I forgot to mention he also wrote 'war of the worlds'...which by the way as a movie, the original scared me lots, I still remember coming out of the movie theater(& which theater
we saw it in) being unnerved & I was pretty young when I saw it.....

As far as a regular exercise routine, I wish
I could say that I was diligent about it, but...

I have cd's from a guy named Gilad, who used
to have a daily exercise show on a health channel we had here for awhile, but then it
was removed...his workouts are really terrific,
when I do them on any sustained regular basis,
I feel so much better...haven't figured out
what internal mechanism I could use to keep
me motivated daily...to many distractions, I think...

As for vitamin taking, are you alluding to
taking glucosamine/chondroitin complex, which I
know for me has been a real help. I take lots
of others as well, but that is probably the #1
vitamin that I rely on.

Hope to catch you all later.

Standing in line at WM. Can you do that
Chloe?

Solar said...

I have the 2nd part of this post ready to go..or will have later on; and will post tonight, for tomorrow. I have also included the people that I have met when I time traveled ..wanna hear it?? Coreen is the only one to have done it so far...Carol which ones from the past would you most want to spend some time with?....later

Thanks for the invite. Solar has my email address and is welcome to share it around. I might just comment for a while though.

Getting back to the main topic, one of my favorites. A Scientific American article I mentioned at TM says that if you apply to any particle, it seems to affect all particles in the universe.

This could explain esp, some of us might be better and receiving and understanding these influences, which might include events or even the thoughts of others.

Add to that that in the lands of sub-atomic particles, matter has huge empty spaces in it and there's no apparent reason matter blocks matter. We should fall through a chair if we sit on it. So it's been suggested that it's our belief that it's solid that makes it so.

It looks more and more to me that physical reality is a way our brain handles the perception of the energy around us.

So if a stimulus can affect all matter simultaneously, might time itself not fall under the same filters?

Solar said...

Don,

Really liked your last post about matter..thanks. and will it ties in with my next post...I don't post too much. The others do it mostly. I felt that I owed a cpl so this is my way of paying the rent...

I will pass on your e-mail to the others; or jut give it to Carol..she will send you the invite..no rush to post anything..it took some of us a while to do that...

Hey do you know that we drink dark matter when we drink water..I forgot where I read that..Scientific American is a fine mag..there are some others that I enjoy, and compare; to see if they are all on the same page, sorta speak...

Solar said...

Don,

Im going back to TM and take a look at that link to the article that you just mentioned...sounds like a good one...so far if I sit long enough on may chair..

which I can't b/c my sciatic nerve will start hurting..so, it will be interesting to see it the sourness due to prolonged sitting is in my mind...mmmm good one; but we better not mess with dark matter too much..tell you later....

Solar said...

One more thing: Ivy is also a world traveler; between the two of you; we will share in the experiences .......so....R we there yet.!! (*_~) that Ivy's pretty face..you should see her mean one.

Carol said...

Oh dang Don, now I have to start worrying about my chair disappearing. I already worry about my chair at work falling apart since I have a really rotten one. One more ass hitting the ground and it's all over for me.

Chloe, I posted my shopping at WM comment while second in line at the 20 or less line at WM. The lady in front of me had only a few items. Were you impressed?? Try that with your laptop.

Little Iphoney and me are getting to be great pals. We've been shopping the free apps store. Got a dictionary/thesaurus. Ya'll know how much I need one of those.

I also got this MotionX Track Recorder. Haven't played with that yet.

Anonymous said...

Carol,
Or you could invent a chair where ever you are when you get tired. A chair is just a concept. I'm thinking of Lazy Boy lounge chair with heat and massage.

I still say Christmas Eve is the official male shopping day for Christmas. It's much quieter then. <grin>

"Standing in line at WM. Can you do that Chloe?"

Hahaha! Carol, you made me laugh good with that one. The answer, of course, is no!

I swear, 'you and that phone' of yours: a force to be dealt with.
ps (you're inspiring me to try more on my phone.. only maybe though)

"A Scientific American article I mentioned at TM says that if you apply to any particle, it seems to affect all particles in the universe.... That was such an interesting post you made there Don. I think what you said about some people receiving thoughts is so true.

Anonymous said...

Oooh, I like that one too. I love thinking about the idea of us having that much control. Manifesting ideas and thoughts into something physical, making them happen by just thinking. I believe, so much, that we have that ability, but for some reason, I rarely work on it. More procrastination, I suppose. (although I know we're doing it in little ways all the time, I wish I could turn it into something bigger.)

A young couple were about to have sex. The young guy admitted to being experienced. The young lady admitted she was a Virgin and didn't know what to do. I'm going to tape 1 of 4 coins, penny, nickel, dime and quarter in an appropriate place. When the time is right think of each coin from the lowest to the highest in sequence and move to that coin. The young lady agreed saying ok. As time went by things started to heat up, the young lady keeping prefect rhythm. Moving her body to the coins one each, penny (L Hip) nickle (R Hip) dime ( The Small of her Back) and the Quarter ( Pelvis). She was getting so Hot and He was about explode. The young lady screamed, Forget the small change DIME A QUARTER, DIME A QUARTER, DIME A QUARTER !

Mary, do you clean your cookies, and temp. files from time to time?

Cookies is computer language, im not calling you cookie..ok cookie...:-))

Solar said...

Keep working on it...what most people don't understand sometimes,,is that the comp. won't break..just don't change settings, unless you know what you are doing...when there is something wrong...you can usually fix it by doing a 'system restore' this I would learn how to do...

Carol said...

Solar, I'm not sure I completely understand your joke. I might have to download MapQuest first.

Mary said...

Solar, Yes I do. I always delete the temp. intenet file but not the other temp. files. Should I delete those also?

Carol said...

Solar, it is great you still have your mama at age 93. It good for the rest of us that she still packs a wallop. Thanks Mama Solarcita.

Solar said...

Carol, U funny.

Mary yes delete them if you don't use them..but the cookies are the ones that are a pain sometimes...also click on tools and click on ...clear recent history..it takes to to a box that has check boxes in them; the only one that I check is the cache one..then I click...clear...that will help you maintain...

Solar said...

her name is Maria...I play the song Ave Maria by a cpl of singers that she likes....that song..very moving....

Anonymous said...

Mary. Mary-PC is probably the name of your computer. A program on your computer probably tried to make a connection to another program on your computer. The old term is pipes, not tubes. It could be a socket, or some other Windows mechanism.

Since you haven't given explicit permission for that program to create a local connection Norton complained. It was probably to a particularly sensitive program rather than from a dangerous program.

Norton is famous for giving false alarms and I haven't used it in years so I can't give you more details. There's probably an event history or log that would have more details. If you dig that out I could tell you more.

Worse case is a program you use isn't running right. But what ever it was is being isolated and prevented from causing any problem.

Solar said...

Thanks Don,

Im one of those guys that can do a lot of things (self taught) but can't explain things in the right way sometimes...like you or Chloe.

You were right Solar, I just added to it. I've been working on computer for 35 years now.

I was thinking that you don't see 65 year old web programmers the other day, wondering what I'd be doing until retirement. Then I realized that web programming has only been around for about 18 years.

Jeff Corwin's "100 Heartbeats" (from extinction) is starting now on MSNBC...

Carol said...

60 minutes was covering a subject that has always been distressing to me as a nurse. It is the torment, not even counting the gazillions of dollars spent, that is perpetrated on old people at the end of life when there is really no life left.

This is often done because the family can't let go. The patient would never want this. Believe me they wouldn't.

If families could only see/feel the reality of it. Dozens of specialists probing the patient. The ventilators, the suctioning, the catheters and other awful tubes, the needles in painful places, raw and painful body tissues and no real dignity left.

And CPR is a very brutal act and should only be done when there is any, even slight, hope of returning a person to life. Performing it even perfectly, you feel old bones crunch. It would make you cringe.

When I was involved with both of the above, I felt like I was the Devil's advocate. It physically and mentally hurt me.

And much of this is done because of Medicare. We pay tons of money for this. Then you have young people who have a good chance for life being denied health care because they have no way to finance it.

I don't know how we can fix this problem without someone screaming, you want to kill grandma and grandpa. And how do you set up the standards/protocol to deal with this???

If we could find a reasonable way to quit tormenting grandma/grandpa or mom/dad, we could well afford to keep sis/brother or son/ daughter alive.

" Im one of those guys that can do a lot of things (self taught) but can't explain things in the right way sometimes..."

Solar,
I don't agree with that. I think you explain things perfectly. I'm self taught just like you, and learning was all hit and miss. Often, still is.

Carol,
I don't know if you'll be checking in tonight, but I just want to mention to you that I got an email that I can now download Kindle onto my laptop. So I did, and was able to log into my account and access any books I have downloaded in the past, or download books onto my laptop.

What I hadn't mentioned was that I stepped on my Kindle and wrecked it the other day. It was then that I realized that I really have gotten so attached to it, that I don't want to go back to regular books. I was surprised at myself, because when I first got it, I was just the opposite. Like everything else, it took a while to get used to, but now I'm going to have a hard time getting along without it. Therefore, I'm asking Santa for a (new and improved, bigger) Kindle, instead of a new camera (which I don't deserve, anyway..... I sure hope I didn't subconsciously ruin it on purpose....noooo, I can't believe that about myself).

Anyway, I know I've made a short story long, but I think maybe you can go to Amazon and download Kindle for free, then pay for the books just like you do on a Kindle, but onto your laptop, to try it out without buying one first. The reading will be slightly differently, because they purposely didn't back-light the Kindle, so it would be easier on the eyes. Plus you won't have the buttons to turn pages. I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine they made it just as easy to use on the computer as a Kindle.

You may want to check it out and see what you think... and it won't cost you a penny, unless and until you buy a book.

Carol, Your 5:15 is an excellent post, and I agree with it all. If we had Universal Health Care, at least it would help those younger patients that you mentioned, to be given a better chance to receive the care they need and deserve.

I can't see it Ivy. I pay a fortune to have satellite at an empty house. If I could find another dish, I could bring my reciever out here. Where could I find another dish for Dish Network? There is a Direct TV dish out here. I guess that won't work. Anybody know?

Anonymous said...

Carol, regarding your post: It's always about the money, isn't it.

You could change over to Direct TV, couldn't you? They come out and install it.

... or call Dish Network, and ask them how to go about changing it. Maybe it's free.

Oh, I should have said regarding your health care post, it's always about the money Carol. I guess you knew which one I was talking about.

Carol said...

Would it help Chloe? How do we deal with the issue I discussed? We have to have some way to channel the financial resources to where they will do the best good without people screaming rationing.

Solar said...

Chloe,

Thanks. It is not easy telling someone else how to break something...I also agree with Carols about the Medicare problem..this one of the reasons that im against what they are trying to pass right now..I just see it ....that all that they are doing, is providing more, and more clients for an already abusive system...

where is the reform for it all...the fine print is going to kill us I thing...the hold outs like M. L. received 100's of millions of dollars...and all of a sudden they are for it...the hold outs should get arrested for blackmail...

Im ready to post the last part of the time thing...wanna hear it?? I think that you will like this one even more...and do you have your list ...and don't say that you won't do it...or anyone else..it is required home work...

I love it when you beg..

Carol, I just lost a dang post again..have to slow down..

You have the example at your house on the roof...what you will need is to point a new dish in the same direction that the one on your house is pointing..you will need; what they call an LNB get a 4 way..they are better..it attaches to the dish very easily, then you just screw in the line that you attach to your box...get someone to help you..it is not hard to do..but the best thing is to tell your dish supplier to install the dish for you..get another box..and then cancel it..and return the box..leaving the dish all set up...

Carol, I bet you could find one on eBay or if you advertised on craigslist. There have to be lots of them drifting around.

When my father was hospitalized the last time he had decided that he wasn't going to fight for life. He had a strong faith, had watched enough family pass before him, and his lifestyle was degrading from several health problems.

The hospital would not leave him alone to die in peace, forcing psychiatrists, tests, and several treatments on him. The pièce de résistance was the psychiatrist they had brought in to treat his 'depression' billed for two visits after he had already died.

We as a culture are so afraid of age and dying that we can't accept that it is just a part of life and may not be so terrible.

Carol said...

I've seen people with no insurance get Psych consults due to suicidal attempts and the shrink writes that they are not a danger to thenselves. You know if they had good insurance, they certainly would have been a risk.

Carol, I betcha we can find most programs online. I know they have new movies that are at the theater too. I'm going to find the link for the new movies that are on another day, and link it here. I think we can probably find all of it right here on our laptop, if we just look.

Carol said...

Maybe what we should do is have everyone watch a video of what it is like to be kept alive when there is no hope for a quality existance left. Then a person can make the decision as to whether that is what they would choose to have done to them. I'm not talking about euthanisa either but just let us die comfortably and with dignity.

Carol said...
