Mystery Bone

This morning, while blowing the leaves off my back porch deck, I found a bone. It hasn't been there for long. It was on the far side of the top step going up to the deck. I would have seen it if it had been there. Even if I would have missed it recently, which I doubt, I would have seen it last week when I blew off my deck.

It doesn't appear to have been chewed on recently. There are no dogs running around unless, the neighbor's dogs get out and that usually only happens when the neighbors are not home and it doesn't happen very often.

The bone appears old and it is just over 5 inches long. What or who does this bone belong to? What or who left it there? Does someone or something want me to clear up this mystery?

Chloe, how are you and little Emma this morning? Any fever? Did you sleep well with the Nyquil?

Carol said...

A couple of other clues re: bone, it was sitting right on the edge of that top step where a dog wouldn't have had room to be chewing on it. And there is a tree branch directly over that spot. Might have fallen out of the tree??

Morning Carol, Pretty lively group last evening....

I'll bite.... Was it that great beav you have been keeping watch for (though I'm not sure they are carnivorous)

or the bone was dropped by one of your
winged creatures soaring overhead.

Carol said...

I don't have the answer to this mystery Coreen. I'm looking for the answer and feel that the Swamp Think Tank might be able to help. I do feel like this mystery was dropped on my porch for a reason.

Carol said...

Yes Coreen, last night was quite a hoot. I laughed my way to bed. Laughing is good. Might not keep me alive longer cuz I just could choke on some of my own spittle. I did a few times last night.

Coreen said...

OK, how about this, you put the pic of the UFO
up last night & this a.m. a token is left
at your doorstep. (just kidding)

Remember the X-files....the truth is out there.

Carol said...

That bone had to either be dragged, dropped or it crawled on my porch. I'm not too cool with the, crawled on, idea.

Carol said...

That's one possibility Coreen. I'll list it.

Carol said...

Need Solar's help. Waiting for him to wake up. Isn't he the anthopology, archeology, and UFO-ology expert in the Swamp.

jan said...

Carol & Chloe, Hope that hurricane misses you both. As if you have not had enough rain and flooding.

Carol, I hope the bone is not a human one. Maybe we need to call in that anthropologist from the show "bones." If it is a bone, your place may become a crime scene. Yikes!!

Went to Costco yesterday at noon. John was hungry for one of their sausage hot dogs with sauercraut (I am sure this is misspelled). I sampled while I shopped - and that was my lunch (burp). I had 3-4 courses: soup, salad, meat and dessert - they usually don't offer much in the way of fruits and veggies so had to make up for those for dinner.

Good luck on ID'ing the bone.

Sling me under the sea.
Pack me down in the salt and wet.
No farmer's plow shall touch my bones.
No Hamlet hold my jaws and speak
How jokes are gone and empty is my mouth.
Long, green-eyed scavengers shall pick my eyes,
Purple fish play hide-and-seek,
And I shall be song of thunder, crash of sea,
Down on the floors of salt and wet.
Sling me . . . under the sea.

It was just weird Jan how that bone showed up. It is an old looking bone. Looks like it had been buried for a while but how did it get up on my deck?? It called out to me to pay attention to it.

Yes, isn't it fun to eat those little food samples at those big warehouse stores. I like to go for brunch. I'm not sure if I ever bought what I sampled except yesterday when I sampled this small piece of a toasted cheese sandwich. Either I was really hungry or the cheese was really good. It's a new sliced, individually wrapped cheese product from Bordens called Hickory Smoked Swiss. Might want to try it. I'll let you know if it still tastes good when I'm at home.

Ivy Green said...

Oh, I forgot, the title of the Sandburg pome is "Bones."

Carol,
Hubs went out to shop for some "real food." I bet he ends up at Whole Foods.

Carol said...

Hi Ivy. You have any ideas? It could have jumped out of the river.

You and Hubs OK today? I have been having a little belly ache today, maybe some sympathy pain, maybe all the junk I have eaten that I wasn't supposed to be eating this weekend.

Chloe needs to check in to let us know that she and the Emster are OK today. And Chloe, I'm proud of you. You gave us a little peek into your soul the other day. Hey, I spill my soul all over the place here.

I've been watching a pretty good movie waiting for my ball game to come on. It's Almost Famous.

Carol said...

Ya'll have a Whole Foods Ivy? Dang, I wish we had one here. I drove to Beaumont one day just to stop at one of their nice HEBs. I was stuck on the Interstate for hours, both there and back, just to have a little more quality shopping experience.

Carol said...

That was supposed to be to shop.

Carol said...

Hubs does the shopping and the cooking Ivy? Better keep him hidden. There are women who would kill for a man like that. I'm not one of them since the grocery shopping and cooking are two of my favorite things to do.

Ivy Green said...

Thanks, Carol. It is true that Hubs is a gem. He was raised by a good mom. Also true I've had friends and colleagues who've asked if he has brothers, or could be cloned, or such. lol

In truth, we both shop, but in different ways. When he has some special dish in mind to make, he likes to do the shopping for it himself. What he doesn't like is what he calls my "hunting and gathering expeditions" just to see what's there. He goes with a list, gets what's on the list, and then leaves. No fooling around.

He's back already. Ended up at Publix.

Ivy Green said...

Uh oh. He had yesterday's list that still had on it a few things I forgot to cross off even though I'd gotten them already at Wally World. So I have doubles now. It's okay, just save me trips for the next time.

Ivy Green said...

Tony's comments last night about cleaning got me guilty about not having done any, so I'm going to go find something to either clean or organize. Cleaning is one thing I don't get Hubs involved in. I'd rather do it my way.

Carol said...

I like to keep a couple ahead Ivy. I hate to run out of something.

Ivy Green said...

It's beautiful afternoon outside. You'd never know we got this thing called Ida possibly headed our way.

Ivy Green said...

One more pome...

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church --
I keep it, staying at Home --
With a Bobolink for a Chorister --
And an Orchard, for a Dome --

Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice --
I just wear my Wings --
And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church,
Our little Sexton -- sings.

God preaches, a noted Clergyman --
And the sermon is never long,
So instead of getting to Heaven, at last --
I'm going, all along.

Carol,
If Ida IS coming our way, we have to stock up on our breadmilkandtoiletpaper. lol

Carol said...

Great pome Ivy.

I don't know about Ida. It has increased it's winds since I checked this morning from 90 to 100mph. They also moved the cone over to the east. Right now they have the center of the cone close to the Alabama/Florida border then turning ENE.

Carol said...

Appears the Saints aren't having a good football day either. It would be hard to overcome two losses this weekend. Carolina 13, Saints zip.

Carol said...

It's not beautiful outside here Ivy. It's what I think of for a typical Fall day, dreary and blustery. Supposed to rain today and tomorrow.

Carol, I think that bone may have either dropped off that tree or was left there by an animal. They may have found it, then found out it was too petrified to eat (it could have been buried and be years old). They may have dug it up then couldn't eat it.

It's not uncommon to find small animal bones when you live some place with lots of wild life, where small creatures have either died a natural death or killed by a larger animal. (Was there any wind?) I assume you have raccoons and possums, and that bone may have been the right size to be one of them.

Emma was much more her self today, and I have been mostly tired (if I don't mention that it's hard to breath), but am going in the right direction. The way she ate while she was sick and as hungry as I've been today, I think this cold (or whatever it is) actually makes you hungrier than usual. Unusual.

What you said about peeking into my soul, I don't know. I think anything and everything we say here lets us do that. It's real easy to see who someone is after hearing what they have to say are a reasonably long period of time. There's bound to be a pattern. That's what I like about blogging: it's a much more specific kind of conversation. It blocks out the stuff that really doesn't matter, and lets us focus on what's most important.

Anonymous said...

Mary, I want to thank you for that nice message you left me on the last thread last night. I love animals so much too. And I can see me crying over that little flying squirrel the way you did. I have learned (I think), that we should spread all that love for them while they are alive, and when it comes time to leave, let go. That doesn't stop it from being a huge loss and pain, but it allows us to spread that love to those who are still here.

Years ago, on Oprah, there was a lady that had recently lost her young son, who she loved more than anything. They did this in a flash back, and on the appearance I saw, she was now divorced and lost custody of all her other kids. She had gone into such a deep depression, she was no longer able to give them the love and care they needed, because she was in such pain over the one she'd lost.

These are very hard things for me to put into words, and something will be missed in the translation, I'm sure. But that long, unbearable mourning that she went through for her lost son, cost her the love and custody of her other 3 children, who were given to the custody of her ex-husband, because she couldn't function over a long period of time.. So those children had to go through life without their mother, because she was no longer available for them.

I think what I'm saying is that we need to focus on loving and enjoying those that are with us, while they're with us and realize that part of life is death. Therefore give them all we have while they're here. Eventually I think I've become more able to accept that. It's still painful, it still feels unbearable at times, but you have to make sure you're 100% here, for those who count on you. Here is the only place you have any control.

Ivy, I saw what you said about your reaction to drugs, that sometimes you get the opposite effect. I don't think that's all that unusual. Anti-histamines don't really work for me, so that Nyquil didn't do that good a job either, but it helps a little getting to sleep, if I lay down right afterward. The capsule type are slightly different than the liquid also.

Also, Yes, I did have Emma already tucked in and off to sleep last night. I always do before I come here to chat. Today she's taking a longer nap than usual, so I suspect she's busy healing.

.. good news in the morning, not so good news in the afternoon:

House health care bill has nowhere to go in Senate
"The House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said dismissively.

Democrats did not line up to challenge him. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has yet to schedule floor debate and hinted last week that senators may not be able to finish health care this year.

Chloe,

Im glad that Emma is doing a lot better, and it looks like you will too.! About that missed opportunity to go to lunch with you and the gals...well I guess that I can't really complain; since Natasha left order for me not to say anything, and I still have the bruises from the last time that you threw me under the wheels....hey are you a little like Obama....

Carol, Im going with what Chloe had to say about that bone. It can't be that giant pre-historic beaver could it? I think that those midnight splashes were the living ones checking you out....they don't like it when you make fun of them...

Anonymous said...

"hey are you a little like Obama...."

I KNOW you didn't mean that. Right?

Carol said...

Hi Chloe, glad you guys are feeling better. Take it easy, and feed whatever you have. What is it that they say...starve a fever and feed a cold? I usually feed both if I can still swallow.

I've been a little off my feed today. Actually I've been all over my feed but I haven't really enjoyed anything I've eaten.

I keep trying something different to see what it is I really want. I made my little spicy chicken wings but that wasn't what I wanted so when Jan mentioned hotdogs, I grilled up two of them and ate them. That wasn't it either. Now I'm too full to find what it is that I really want.

Anonymous said...

Well, The little angel is up for a while. Wish me luck getting her down early tonight, since she had a longer nap than usual.

Solar, You know I was just kidding. And I know the same.

I hate it when that happens Carol. Those days when I can't figure out what I want to eat. And like you, I keep trying different things, until I finally give up. Today was a day when things tasted really good. Especially that Blue Bell Ice Cream I had for dessert. Emma thought it was very tasty too.

I'll check back later.

Solar said...

Chloe,

No need to ask.! Glad that you are feeling better. How do I know...you did not let that slide by..

Carol, I forgot to mention what sometimes works well for me, if I'm having that eating problem you're having today. Eat a butterfinger. Presently my candy of choice, but it changes periodically, of course.

Solar said...

The only candy that will satisfy you; is Chunky....what a chunk of chocolate..ice cream will do it also..

Solar said...

Chloe,

Next time that you go shopping. If you are anywhere near a Mexican grocery store, stop in and buy a box of hard chocolate. It comes in a circle and breaks off in pieces..one piece is put into steaming hot milk, it dissolves, and makes the best chocolate ever..I put in two of them....

Carol said...

I'd like to see Tony's results on that Typo test. Tony, if you come visit again, you need to take the test. I bet he's an I. I think "I"s are more likely to hang out on the Net. I'm pretty sure he is also a J, because he is so neat and organized. Probably also a N and a T. We need to link that test again so he can take it.

Carol said...

Coreen, did you see any of that Saints/Carolina game? I lost a little hair over this one. I think we might finally have it in the bag. That will make us 8-0.

Carol said...

Hey guys, don't worry about Chloe and me with Ida. She won't come our way. She might cause Ivy or Tony some rain. Our weather over here will be better from the counter clockwise winds, it should pull down some winds from the north.

I still think it is weird where I found that bone. I wonder what the bone came from.

jan said...

Chloe, you mentioned Bluebell ice cream. I miss Bluebell Ice Cream. I lived in Texas for 7 years and was introduced to BB IC -when I moved to Arkansas, Lo and Behold - they had Bluebell Ice Cream and so does Oklahoma. But not New Mexico. Can't find Bluebell anywhere. I think Bluebell is the best of any ice cream.

jan said...

Well, I need to catch up on what I have missed here for the past 2 days - since Carol and Mary's birthday. I have been working on a baby quilt for my granddaughter - and I lost track of time.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
One of your friends in the animal kingdom left you their most treasured possession. Their way of saying, "I love you." I had a cat that used to bring me the results of her hunts. "Thanks, Kitty. I love you too."

jan said...

"I think what I'm saying is that we need to focus on loving and enjoying those that are with us, while they're with us and realize that part of life is death"
Chloe, I completely agree. I have found this to be true in my own life. I believe in that song lyric "Love the one (or ones) you're with" It is hard to lose a loved one, whether human or animal, and we certainly have to grieve those losses - but then even in the midst of grief, we have to go on with our lives. I did not see that segment of Oprah, but how sad for the children to lose their mother - and then she lost the time with those children.

jan said...

Oh, Carol, I just read what you said about "J's" about being neat and organized - I have to tell you that this J is not neat and organized. I have had to learn to be somewhat organized to teach, but it does not come naturally to me.

Ivy Green said...

We have Bluebell in Alabama. It's the best. We missed it for 20 years after we moved from Houston back to the east coast. Then we came here and found it again. It was said to be so favored by Prez GWB, he had it imported to the White House from Texas.

jan said...

Speaking of "bones" Has anyone read the novel, "The Lovely Bones" It was one of the best novels I have read. I see a movie is coming out about it.

jan said...

Ivy, I loved the poem by Emily Dickenson about "going to church." That was beautiful. I used to go to church every Sunday b/c I thought I was supposed to. A year ago, I decided I was not going again unless it was because "I want to go." So I find my church in nature and take a lovely walk on Sunday mornings. Your poem made my day.

jan said...

Ivy, Maybe I should ask my neighborhood grocer if they can get it there.

Carol said...

Jan, since a "J" is ..."A Judging (J) style approaches the outside world WITH A PLAN and is oriented towards organizing one's surroundings, being prepared, making decisions and reaching closure and completion", I assumed they would be neater than us "P"s.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I haven't read it, but I saw it in the bookstore on Saturday. The title is intriguing. Why do you recommend it?

Maybe we should start a "book club" here on this blog?

jan said...

Chloe, I read above that Emma is better - so happy to hear that. Are you feeling well or did you catch something too. I see other people are saying you are better - but I have not found where you have said "I am better."

jan said...

Carol, Maybe generally, J's lean toward organization and neatness but not me.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I'm glad you liked the poem, and I'm glad I rediscovered it. It's taken on new meaning since I started hanging out with you guys. lol

jan said...

Ivy, in some ways it is a sad story, but one of the most interesting stories I have read. I don't want to tell you about it - for fear the description might turn you off the book. Someone recommended it to me. The writer is very good and it is a very different and novel story.

jan said...

I would be interested in a "book group" I don't know if everyone would be interested, but I am.

jan said...

Solar, what kind of chocolate do you ask for at the Mexican store? I would like to try it. I love hot chocolate - especially in cold weather.

Ivy Green said...

I just re-shelved my Myers Briggs books. Maybe I need to keep them closer for reference.

I noticed before putting them up, there were parts of chapters about "types and their pets," and another about "what are the differences in humor among types?"

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I will look it up on Amazon for the summary.

jan said...

Chloe, Now I see what you wrote earlier about yourself. So you do have a cold. I am always hungrier when I have a cold. I usually find soup to be very satisfying then. I like the new soups that come in cartons instead of cans. Of course homemade can't be beat. When I had a cold recently, I found a southwestern corn soup that was spicy and great. I put some sour cream in it and I swear it helped my cold.

jan said...

Chloe, one thing I always tell young mothers, rest and sleep when your little one does. So I am telling you to do that too -especially when you are ill. Everything else will still be there when you are feeling better.

Carol said...

Ivy, what kind of pets do they say our type need? And I'm curious about the humor also.

Carol said...

Ivy, Wikipedia summarizes the plot of The Lovely Bones.

Carol said...

Jan, you ought to put up a post with some of the blankets you make. Coreen needs to put up a post with the things she makes also. If Mary would bring some of her jewelry over I would take pics of it also.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I'll have to go retrieve the books for what they say about pets and humor.

While, I'm doing that, I can remember it said, in general, "E's" laugh at others, and "I's" laugh at themselves.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Speaking of homemade, it applies to ice cream too. Homemade ice cream even beats BlueBell.

I think I have a recipe for making a serving of homemade ice cream in a ziploc bag.

Carol said...

I do both Ivy. You keep me in stitches. And I sometimes kill myself laughing at my responses to you. Doesn't matter if no one else finds it funny.

Carol said...

Ever try making that ice cream in a bag Jan?

NF's tune out if the humor is inconsistent with their values.

SF's are practical jokers and if they are the victim of one, they will get you the next time.

I will take some pics of the quilts I have made. I want to get a new memory card. I will do that at the end of the week.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
"The Lovely Bones" looks like a powerful story. Having read it, how would you characterize the telling? The movie will be out next month, we'll probably be seeing the ads for it soon. I hope Peter Jackson does better than he did with "King Kong." That was a disappointment. I always have to wonder if a story's book is better than its movie. Most of the time, I prefer the book, but it has happened on rare occasion that I like the movie better.

jan said...

Yes, I am a "feeler" and definitely do all of that with our Lobie - John does too and he is a bigger "feeler" than me. Ha that came out funny.

jan said...

Lobie is definitely an extension of our personalities. Interesting her coloring reflects both our hair colors -even the color I put on my hair. She is darkish and greyish on her back (like John's hair) and yellowish on her face and sides like my colored hair.

jan said...

Lobie is very patient too - and John and I are both pretty patient. She gets excited and jumps around when she is happy and I think John and I do that (internally) when we are happy and excited too.

jan said...

Ivy, this funny but we have Lobie "author" our Christmas letters.

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

Ingredients:
1/2 cup half-and-half
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 sandwich Ziploc bag
1 gallon Ziploc bag
3 cups crushed ice
1/3 cup rock salt

Directions:
Put first 3 ingredients in the smaller Ziploc bag and seal bag (Make sure it is tightly closed!).

Put ice and rock salt in the larger bag and then add the filled small bag. Seal the large bag.

Shake the bags until ice cream is thickened, about 10-15 minutes. (Might need to wear mitts to keep fingers from freezing!)

Remove small bag, unseal, and eat with spoon.

jan said...

Ivy, I would suggest you read the book first before seeing the movie. I would want to be prepared for the movie. I think its a pretty fast read.

The young girl who is murdered in the book is the narrater. Its really kind of a mystery too.

Ivy Green said...

On second thought, forget the spoon. Snip a hole in the bag and suck it out.

jan said...

I am going to try the ice cream in a bag. Thank you. It sounds yummy.

jan said...

"suck it out" LOL.

jan said...

Ivy and Carol, after reading your descriptions of feelers and intuitives, I am definitely not a T or S.

Well, its bedtime for Bonzo (oh thats me). Talk to you all tomorrow. Sleep well. Wish I had the ingredients for that bag ice cream. Now I want ice cream. Don't have any. So guess I will go to bed.

Carol said...

I think Jan that Ivy was talking about me, also, with the dog thing and the Fs. I'm not an F Ivy. I don't give Maggie a personality, she already has one and I share it with you. I don't add a thing to it. I might be a little focused on it but that's because she's all I got. Nothing else to focus on. I don't dress her up or any of that stuff. She won't let me. She's a T.

But, ya know, I do have a lot of F in me, as much as I have T. I do care about people's feelings and Maggie's feelings. I try to be sensitive to everyone feelings. That was an area where I teetered. I try to T or F in the right places. I'm probably a little more F in my older age than I was when I was young.

I think all of you have lot of F in ya also even though you came out Ts. Don't laugh too hard Ivy. You got F too.

I thought that was you Jan, who had that ice cream recipe. Since it was Ivy, I'm a little skeptical. I thought it might be interesting to hear the recipe but not to make it. That's where my T comes in. Why in the he-- would you want to shake baggies filled with ice and salt, chance having that all over ya, when you can just stroll over to the freezer and get ya a scoop??? Ivy might be up to somethin.

Now Mary is more F than I am with Pedey, her little dog. Like, she'll say Pedey can't stay home at Christmas cuz he'll be sad. I know that they don't know it is Christmas. Well, Maggie is agnostic anyway. Nah, I'm kiddin. I'm sure she does believe because she is named after Mary Magdeline, she can't help but believe.

Carol said...

I got to bed earlier last night than usual. I usually play on the computer for a while but as soon as I got into bed, I fell asleep. I was tired. I've been behind on my sleep for a while.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I was talking primarily about myself with the Pet Personality thing. As an "I" person at the core, my jokes are almost exclusively self-deprecatory. If I were to "pick on somebody" it would only be in the secure knowledge that they were in on the joke and laughing too. I would have to be coming from a place of strong anger and resentment to be laughing at others...that does happen, but it's sarcastic and mean. I don't do that often these days, or I catch myself first.

I do give voices to my pets when they are "talking to me", and also when they are "talking to each other." I interpret what their behavior and expressions mean, and figure out what they're thinking.

Ivy Green said...

In the past, I would have no clue why I would lash out in a sarcastic manner at others. It would just come out. After I started doing some work, I realized it was about having my boundaries violated. The Myers Briggs was one of a few tools that help me define what those boundaries are. How could anyone else know they had crossed my boundary when I didn't even recognize them myself? Now that they are identified, I see why I have certain reactions, and I can take steps to protect myself against my own "loose lips." An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
