Can you pass up a really good sale?

In just a little over a week there will be the infamous Black Friday sales. Are you one of those people who gets up early to go stand in long lines to get some of those deals that are on sale on Black Friday?

Jan, how come your sewing machine was in storage? Haven't you needed it before or has it been a while since you did any quilts?

The last time I remember sewing anything was back in junior high. I'm amazed I can remember junior high. I think we had to make a dress. Haven't made anything except some pillows since then. I sewed the pillows by hand.

I did buy a sewing machine a couple of years ago. I didn't need one but it was on sale at one of those Black Friday sales, ya know, the sale after Thanksgiving. There was nothing else I needed so I got the sewing machine. Can't pass up a really good deal.

But I'll tell you, I don't get up early or stand in any lines. I'm seriously allergic to lines and to waiting. Can't do either.

I don't even know why I went shopping on Black Friday. I think it is because of the sales. I do have problems passing up a really good sale. I wait until around 10 AM or so and if there is still anything left, I might buy it. Has to be at least something that looks interesting. I just don't buy it cuz it is on sale.

Carol said...

I didn't feel like writing a long post this morning but I thought I would throw out an idea and we could discuss it.

I do have many things I don't need because of sales. Like I said, they are things that looked really interesting and that I thought could come in handy some day.

Now Mary turtle did have a little "Shopping Network" addiction but like most people who are addicted to things, she won't admit it.

I had a friend who said her aunt had QVC burned into her television screen because of her shopping addiction.

Most of the people addicted to these shopping networks have storage areas just filled with stuff that they never even opened and Mary does have that.

When we were having to stay at mom's to take care of her, we found some usefulness for some of the junk Mary bought.

One Christmas she pulled out her Bow Diddler, or something like that. We made a few bows for our Christmas presents with it. We mostly just laughed about it.

She also had this gadget that chopped up vegetables. I think that one broke after a few veggies were chopped.

A couple of really dumb purchases were this keychain that held pictures. You needed a microscope just to see the pics. And this pair of scissors that had a laser light to keep you cutting straight. Yeah, you would cut straight but if you got off course, you could cut straight in any direction you were pointed so I still had zigzag cuts.

Carol said...

Sad thing is that I have never seen any of those 1-800 numbers for shopping addictions. I think we all have a little problem with that addiction. Mine is with groceries, cooking stuff, fishing stuff and some tools, I will never use. Too bad it is not with clothes.

My clothes are pathetic. I got some ink on the pocket area of my work slacks from those dumb pens that leak. I ruined one of my pairs of slacks that I wear to work. I get them from the factory outlet store and I can't even find the ones I like anymore. I spent hours with the hairspray trying to melt out that ink stain. If I can get that stain light enough, I will still wear them. Hey, I'm not trying to impress any inmates.

I call my morning ranks, my vagina monologues. I'm not sure what that monologue covered but I have a vagina and I'm doing a monologue, OK?

Oh BTW, I'm back!

Carol said...

And another thing..do you ever have that 20 item line anxiety?? I do. I don't want to break that rule but I'm not sure exactly how to count my items.

Is it counted as one item if it is several of the same type item? Like 3 cans of tomatoes? If not you could go over the number with one bag of potato chips.

I hate to break that rule and I do count my items before getting in that line. Sometimes the 21st item is hiding under something else and I accidentally cheat.

They don't have the rules for that line posted anywhere because if they did I would read them and try to strickly adhere to them.

Carol, Have you ever used that sewing machine?

Also, they have some pretty good spot removers on the market now Carol, but I'm not sure if they list ink as one of the things they remove. Have you checked the labels? You can even use the carpet stain removers.

This article suggest nail polish removers, as well as other things:

Ballpoint Ink Stains

"Lay the stained area on top of a clean dry white towel. Apply rubbing alcohol to the ink stain and blot with another clean white cloth, removing the stain as you blot. Rinse thoroughly.

Lay the stained area on top of a clean dry white towel. Apply nail polish remover to the ink stain and blot with another clean white cloth, removing the stain as you blot. Rinse thoroughly.

Apply your normal liquid laundry detergent onto the ink stain and allow the garment to sit for 3-5 minutes.

Wash in the warmest water that the fabric can tolerate.

Before drying, double check to make sure the stain was removed. If not, repeat the previous steps until it is." Removing Ink Stains

Those 20 items or less rules are just general guide lines. They couldn't care less if you have 22 ore 23 items (sometimes even more) if they're not busy, and the other lines are crowded. They don't expect you to count them one by one, just get a general idea. You're soooo conscientious Carol. I'm sure the other shoppers appreciate it, though.

What are you cooking today? I'm going to start a spaghetti sauce this morning, so it'll have plenty of time to simmer in all the flavors. The longer I simmer, the better it tastes.

Carol said...

Oh yeah Chloe, I did the hairspray and the fingernail polish remover and the soap and the rinse. I got it lighter but not out. I will wear the pants and the ink stain just shows that I do work with an ink pen.

Carol said...

Oh good, your cooking. What does little Emma eat? Can she eat big people food yet?

Anonymous said...

I don't go to those crowded sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving. To me, it's just not worth it. The only thing that makes them worthwhile, is those super low priced things that they have a very limited number of. Those are always gone, no matter how early you get there.

I made the mistake of going once to the one at Best Buy. Boy, that was a joke. I've never seen the place so crowded, and people were buying anything and everything. The sales weren't all that good either. The buyers were just crazed, and filling up carts until they were overloaded with expensive electronics. I couldn't believe it.

Anonymous said...

I have a little hand strainer for Emma's food. She really doesn't like baby food, so it's been a challenge finding things she likes. She'll eat a few bites of the spaghetti, but not much. How good can squished up spaghetti be?

Yesterday she ate Minestrone soup though, and love it. I mashed up a few of the things that were in it, and she slurped away (with a little help finding her mouth.. ha!). She 'loves' smashed avocado, peas, a little runny pnut butter, juices and some fruits. She just got her first teeth the last week. But they're not doing her much good yet. A top one came first (unusual, usually bottom com in first) and it's still tiny, just barely through. There's one trying to work it's way through the bottom too. It's going to be a while before she can chew much.

Anonymous said...

I never worry about a little ink stain Carol.
Have you looked online to see if they have those pants you like. Online is a great way to shop for clothes, especially for someone like you that doesn't like to go out and shop for them. There's almost nothing you can't find, and if you have a favorite store, most sell online too. A very convenient way to shop, and it's delivered to your door step.

I'm not talking about buying things you don't need though. I mean just for the things you dread going out and hunting for.

Anonymous said...

I'll be back a little later, after I get some things going around here.

Carol said...

I buy books online. I've shopped for other stuff and mostly I use Amazon.com. I even bought a trolling motor there. It was a couple hundred dollars less than buying it here in town.

Carol said...

I have a friend at work who goes to those Black Friday sales every year. She goes with a group of friends and goes out of town. She invites me every year and I turn her down every year. Can't think of anything worse than being stuck with a bunch of shop-a-holics, out of town on a big sale day. I would be trapped like a rat!

Carol said...

Hey Ivy, what were those vagina monologues about? Where they about vaginas???

Carol said...

If you are going to one of those BF sales, please suit up. Every year there are people strampled and killed. Those stores don't care, they probably just get some extra insurance from Ivy's husband. Doesn't he insure some of those high risk things?

Carol said...

No Chloe, I haven't used that sewing machine. It's still in the shopping bag I brought it home in. I do move it around some, from one place to another. I thought about opening it up but the anxiety of thinking about trying to thread it and put in a bobbin is just too high.

I also don't like to read directions. Since most of that junk is made in China, the directions were probably first written in Chinese and didn't translate well. I like little pics but they are even too complicated these days.

I was always the one in the family who mom designated to put stuff together. I have spent many hours assembling things. The worst I ever had to assemble was my nephew's swing set. Some of the parts didn't even meet up and when your dealing with heavy metal that ain't fun.

Carol said...

Walmart has come up with an idea to stop that, door rushing accident waiting to happen, thing.

Carol said...

Ya know one thing that really irks me is that that Levi Johnson, with no particular accomplishments of his own except getting Palin's daughter pregnant, is probably getting rich trashing her.

Why don't all those people who are interviewing him ask about his mom's drug problems and if it runs in the family. Maybe that would shut him up.

I wish the media would stop making people, with no particular accomplishments except being nuts or devious, famous.

Carol said...

Levi ought to be down on his knees thanking Sarah Palin for giving him a chance for his 15 minutes of fame instead of trashing her! You will get your karma Levi.

Anonymous said...

"I also don't like to read directions."

The more you talk, I find out more and more, how much alike we are. I 'hate' reading instructions. And I can see me doing something like that, buying a sewing machine, then not opening it. But I was 'never' the one assigned to putting things together. I'm just don't have the patience.

WM has a good idea there, but the 'sale' doesn't start until 5am the day after Thanksgiving. They are just staying open all night so people can wait inside. I guess you could sweet talk a sales person into holding an item for you if you get there early, although I doubt it.

Anonymous said...

Carol, You need to ignore Levi. As you know, there's a jerk born every minute, and he's one of them. He is a kid though, and all this notoriety isn't going to do him one bit of good in the long run.

Anonymous said...

I believe in karma too, but still, I'm not so sure about justice.

Carol said...

And Chloe, I think I'm going to make a meatloaf today. I have lots of ground chuck that I get for Maggie food, when it's on sale.

I will borrow some of her ground chuck for a meat loaf. I'm not that crazy about meatloaf, even though I make a good one, but it is great for leftover sandwiches. Nothing better than a leftover meatloaf sandwich.

Mary said...

I totally agree with you, Carol, about Levi Johnson. Every time I see him on some network talking, I try to change the channel real fast because he makes me sick.
I will admit I have always liked watching the shopping network channels. Don't much anymore because I can't afford to. Sorry Carol for the keychain flashlight that needed a microscope and the laser scissors. It was the thought that counts!!! Now the electric saucepan I got you, well I think you use that everyday. I don't know about the bag sealer but I use mine alot and it works good.
One Christmas I did most of my shopping from my lazyboy and was that nice.

Solar, You had some great 'witch' info yesterday. You know, there are some male witches too.

You go to those sales after Thanksgiving (that Carol's talking about), I bet you'll see plenty of witches. Yikes, stay out of the stores. I went yesterday, and it's already a nightmare out there (at least in the Houston area). These people around here spend money, whether they've go it or not. That's what keeps the economy fairly healthy here. They'll work 7 days week if necessary, just so they have plenty of money to go out and eat, plus all the other activities they enjoy. Like that dumb (sorry to those who don't agree) Renaissance Fair that's they have up the way from us every year: October through November. Traffic all the time, and it costs a fortune to get in there. We're always glad to see it end, then we see a sign this year there's another type of fair coming back in February this year, around the time of the Rodeo. Then we'll have that up here, plus that trail ride that goes on for a week or so of long lines of people riding their horses and pulling wagons, along the highway, no less. Only in Texas. Ha!

Anonymous said...

I agree Carol. Meatloaf sandwiches are great. I haven't had one in years though. That's because I haven't made a meatloaf in the last 15 years or so. Ha!

I betcha Maggie likes meat loaf too, doesn't she.

Carol said...

Yesterday I made some chocolate pecan candy. Like I need that in the frig calling my name.

I can't find any chocolate covered pecan candy anywhere. They don't even have it in the Russel Stover chocolate covered nuts. They have a few walnut/pecan candies in the box but not just pecan. I love pecans.

They also have those Turtle type candy but that has caramel and can pull off your crowns. My candy turned out pretty good. Good enough that about half of it is already on my thighs.

Today I want to make those little cinnamon crisps. Mom used to make them with her left over pie crust pieces. You roll it out and spread some butter, cinnamon, sugar, roll it up and slice into cookies. Bake it until brown and then stick that on your ass, if your hips are full.

Mary said...

Chloe
I have a friend that goes to that Renaissance Festival every year and stays for a whole weekend. I went one time about 10 yrs. ago and that was enough for me. I just wanted to see what it was about. I can't see going every year.

Carol said...

Chloe, Maggie can't have meatloaf, it has onions in it and dogs can't have onions. I guess I could make her her own little onionless meatloaf. I think I will. Good idea.

Carol said...

And Rez, I thought it was soooo sweet when you mentioned having to leave the other night to go talk to your wife about her day. Most of the men on TM are really good husbands. Even Solar talked about helping with the housework and dishes. And Ivy's husband does most of the cooking.

The men around my neck of the woods are best discribed by that song, "I'm gonna miss her" by Brad Pasisley.

I'm Gonna Miss Her

Anonymous said...

Mary, Yes, They spend the night at the one here too. Some people will spend a week there. All they do on those campgrounds is party. You can spend a fortune at those places too. I don't see the attraction, once you've seen it once.
We also get to see a lot of those costumes they wear around town, without even going there. It's quite common around here, this time of the year.

Mary said...

Chloe
The festival that's near you is the one everybody goes to. That's the one I went to also. I agree with "once you've seen it once". I do love Renaissance music but I don't even remember hearing much music there. I have a wonderful Renaissance Christmas CD.

rezdog said...

Yum! leftover meatloaf sandwiches. Just thinking about em adds on another 5 lbs.

You guys are worse, Thankgiving's not even past and you're on to the post thanksgiving sales. Next you'll be hanging Xmas decorations. :-)

rezdog said...

Hey,Ivy's old man must be the perfect hubby. I know cause I do most of the cooking here. lol

Carol said...

Yep Rez, I'm lucky I still don't have my Christmas decs. up from last year. Well, I guess I still do. I still have the lights up outside from last year. I've broken many of the bulbs, stepping on them. I hope I can find some replacement bulbs. That will save me several hours.

Carol said...

I think that most housework should be done by men. It's just too physical for us women. Worse than most yardwork.

That's why mine doesn't get done. Just too physical. I like the yardwork but not the housework.

rezdog said...

Speaking of cooking and Thanksgiving dinner, dear wife and I decided the other day to go out to a prepared buffet. It'll be the first time since we got hitched (93) that we haven't cooked a turkey. We've always had our own turkey even if we visited relatives for the main dinner. As Perot would say, Now that's sad

Carol, you struck a chord with me talking about sales. I have always loved sales. I credit my mother with that. When we were kids, she never bought us any clothes that were not on sale or that she didn't make. She was the sale queen. The problem now is I want to clear out stuff so I don't go shopping much (except for groceries) b/c I always wind up buying something. Now if I go shopping, I go with a list and try to stick to my list - including groceries.

Carol, I have not used a sewing maching in 6-7 years b/c I have been making quilts by hand. I discovered a quilt pattern for a "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt several years ago and I have made 2 bed size quilts using it. It is fun to make and I can carry it anywhere I go. I like to work on it while I watch TV or travel.

Hey Rez, I think that's a good idea to try something different this year. No work - you may enjoy it even more. I know how hard it can be to bread tradition though. But I'm betting you're both going to enjoy that buffet.

Are you going to a restaurant or family/friends.

Anonymous said...

Ok Paul. I get it.

Solar said...

Rez, U gotta watch your self around here....except Jan , she is kinda sweet.......so far...but the rest...look out...and they have a lawyer that can cut you with just a cpl of words...

I don't buy things online. If I want a book from Amazon John orders it for me. For clothes I like resale shops. I love to go to thrift stores too (I went before it was popular). I have turned all my work friends onto thrift stores and now we all go there. There is one store that I do like for work clothes or something nice - and I stick with it. The more money I save the more trips I can take. I find a lot of good books at yard sales.

Where I spend my money is at fabric shops - I prefer the quilt shops b/c they carry the nicest fabrics, but expensive. A yard of nice cotton fabric now runs between $7.-10. a yard.

"The festival that's near you is the one everybody goes to."

Yep, That's the one. They come from many miles around for this one. I think it must be world famous. I've heard it's the largest one in the U.S. Lucky us. Ha!

jan said...

"They couldn't care less if you have 22 ore 23 items (sometimes even more) if they're not busy, and the other lines are crowded. They don't expect you to count them one by one, just get a general idea. "

Chloe, I had to chuckle at this. This is what I tell John too - but he is like Carol, he counts every item before he goes to the xpress lane.

Anonymous said...

Jan, Have you ever gone to Amazon. It's fun to just look around; I don't think there's anything you can't get there. Probably even fabric. They make ordering things very easy too - too easy!

jan said...

Solar, ahh so you think I am kinda sweet. I have my sharp edges - John can tell you that. While reading your comments about witches yesterday, I thought of the 2 1/2 men episode (does anyone watch that) where Charlie was sleeping with a witch -she put a spell on both Charlie and Alan. That was one of their funniest episodes. Like I said earlier, a woman who taught with us was a "self-declared witch" She was fired twice. She was a good teacher but she had a mouth on her and got herself in trouble too many times. Most people thought she was more b..... than witch. Like I said before, I liked her - I didn't care if she was a witch or an athiest or whatever- she was an interesting person.

rezdog said...

Chloe, We just starting to compare all the dinner ads from the places we would want to try and trust. It looks Six to one, half a dozen to another as to choices. I think we'll enjoy not having to do all that work for just the two of us.

Regardless I still making those giant white rolls (frozen dough), getting a turkey breast, and she's making her famous(to me) pumpkin pies.

jan said...

Chloe, I have looked online at stuff for sale. I dearly love to feel the fabric so one of the fun things in life for me is to go to the fabric store. Its the same thing for clothes - I like to try clothes on. My body type has always been strange - I think - and I like for things to fit a certain way so I don't buy any clothes (except underwear and socks) without trying them on first. Just a quirk of mine. I like to feel things - turn it over in my hands. I guess you would say that I am a "feeler."

Carol said...

Well, I just put in my mega meatloaf. After I got everything in it that I wanted, I think it weighed about five pounds. And to put that in a little convection oven. Hope some of the neighbors are hungry or like meatloaf sandwiches. They have to bring their own bread though since I'm not givin up mine.

I used crackers I had leftover from that last party. They were still good and unopened but I had a bunch of them. Those mega boxes you get at Sam. Keebler. I didn't have any bread I wanted to part with so I used crackers. I did find a recipe that called for crackers so I hope it works. I made my own recipe, except for using the crackers.

jan said...

Carol, I agree - housework is hard labor - especially vacuuming. I hate vacuuming. I now have all wood floors upstairs. I do have a little carpet downstairs in our basement bedroom. That area gets very little traffic though. It gets vacuumed every 2 weeks.

Solar said...

Jan,

I said so far. Thats how you know who, started out, and so did that other u know who...

Hey we share a few little things...one is with Coreen about 2 1/2 men...I just watch them at night sometimes on reruns..they take the seriounses out of my mind. If not my mind races, and races around; and it might take me a cpl of hrs to get to sleep....

I also watch the George Lopez guy...kinda funny also

We also share the odd number quirk..I can't and won't do; or Finnish anything with an even # Both my houses are have an odd # address..

jan said...

Carol, my mother made meatloaf a lot and she always used saltine crackers - it was great meatloaf too.

jan said...

Solar, I too watch the 2 1/2 men at night before bed. I agree that a little ha-ha before bed is good for sleep. I don't think it is as funny since Charley is engaged. I wonder if they are getting ready to end the show. It is taking really different turns. Jake is good but he was funnier when he was younger.

jan said...

I am going to be a "doula" for my granddaughter when she has her baby in January. I am a little nervous about it b/c I have not coached with a woman in labor since my neice about 13 years ago. I think I need to take a refresher course. I was so tickled when Amie asked me to be her "doula." She has a nurse midwife who she is seeing and the NM asked her if she wanted to have a doula - that they were not very expensive (it is hard to believe people charge $ for doing that - cause I loved doing it) . Amie said she told her - "my grandma is a nurse and used to work in OB - I am going to ask her" I was really touched.

Solar said...

Jan, I don't watch them on the new shows..just the reruns...I only started watching about 2-3 months ago...

jan said...

Chloe, I was just reading about Emma and her little teeth. How did she do with cutting teeth? Some babies do it with little problem and others have lots of discomfort.

Mary said...

Carol,
Mom used oats (oatmeal) for the filler for meatloaf for years. That's what I use, also. Just as good if not better and waaaay more healthy.

jan said...

Solar, the older shows are the best ones. I think they may have new writers or it may be that everyone is just getting older and requires different writing.

jan said...

Mary, I think I have used oatmeal for meatloaf. It definitely is healthier.

jan said...

Mary, I am trying to remember, was I with you when you were in labor with Jeremy? I remember seeing you during pregnancy. My memory is not very good any longer.

Mary said...

Jan, What is a "doula"? I just got some news about 1-2 wks. ago. I'm going to be a grandma. Jeremy didn't want me saying anything yet because they are worried about something happening. His wife is about 7 weeks pregnant. She is seeing a specialist. They did an ultrasound last week and saw the heartbeat and everything looked good. His wife is about 37 y/o and as far as I know, first pregnancy.

jan said...

looking back at my comments - I really get wordy when I get on here. I guess I have to make up for lost time.

Off to work on the baby quilt. I want to finish it before Amie's shower on 12/5/09. I should say Amie and Kurt's shower - its a couples baby shower. The world "it is a changin."

Mary said...

Yes, I think you did come when I was in labor. I know you helped me more than the MD did, even during my pregnancy. You probably don't remember this either but you were Jeremy's godmother. You stood up with us during his baptism at First Methdist Church.

Coreen said...

Good afternoon all. Pretty busy here today.

First, I am not a good shopper at all. Only
go when I must..& if I manage to get something
that is on sale, I consider that a gift, since
I rarely do.

Never have been tempted to go shopping the day
after Thanksgiving...

jan said...

Mary, a doula is a person (usually a woman) who attends a woman in labor. It is not necessarily a nurse or a professional person. There are training program for Doulas and they get certified. The word is french. If you look on line for Doulas (I am the worst at putting in links)there is lots of information. The hospitals here actually have doulas who contract with families. The doula does backrubs and coaches the woman and provides emotional and physical support for the woman - and actually the father too if needed.

jan said...

Oh Mary, I am a terrible Godmother - I have not kept in touch with you or Jeremy. I am so sorry.

I am so happy for you that you are going to be a grandmother. I will say prayers for Jeremy and his wife. I do that very well.

Coreen said...

If the resident warlock is still around, enjoyed your witches history, but especially
your personal adventure...that self-proclaimed witch at your sister's had no idea who she was dealing with.

Coreen said...

Jan, I know what you mean about touching fabrics, I do the same with yarns...I like to know the texture, the softness before I decide
to buy it.

Is Joanns & Michaels (both craft stores) nationwide. I know that the Joann's locally
has a pretty good selection of fabrics.

jan said...

Mary, being a grandmother is the best. You get all the benefits and lots less pain (childbirth). Do they live in your area or not?

jan said...

Hi Coreen, yes, we have Joanns and Michaels. I just like the quilt shops - I guess its the mingling with other quilters that makes it more fun. I bet you feel the same way about yarn shops.

Mary said...

Jan, Actually Methodists didn't really have godmothers but I wanted to recognize you for all your help during my pregnancy. You were the best!!
Thank You for your prayers. That's what we need the most now. Stephanie has had some female problems in the past and some abnormal paps but I feel better that she has a specialist.

Mary said...

Jeremy and his wife live in Chicago. That's not good. I know he doesn't want to move down here so I don't know what I'll do. May have to talk him into needing a nanny (live in).

Coreen said...

Two & a 1/2 Men, still watch it both on current
tv & re-runs. Agree the current season is
far below the past seasons. I keep waiting for the fiance to get dumped, since her presence takes away from the chemistry. And sorry, but the kid, Jake, is no longer in any
way cute & they should probably ship him off
to school. The series may have indeed jumped the shark....

The episode with the witch was funny, for me the best part was the end when the mother came
in dressed like a witch & totally intimidated
the so-called witch...& then they alll came out
dresssed like the flying monkeys from wizard of
oz.

jan said...

Mary, I don't think John M. (your doc) ever forgave me for figuring out that Jeremy was in a breech position. I tried to get into a nurse midwife program a couple of years later but there were so few in the country at that time and they only took a few students each year - and usually favored people from their states. It was a lost cause - so I went for a PhD instead. In the end, it was the best thing for me. We have a nurse midwife program here and it would be easy to get in - but now I don't want to "birth any babies"

jan said...

Coreen,
LOL about the witch episode. Just to hear you describe it brings it all back. I agree, I think they need to send Jake off - maybe to military school like they once threatened him with. I too think the current shows with the fiance are not funny - she is not funny. I wonder if they have new writers.

Coreen said...

Jan, What is the theme of the baby quilt.

I know little about quilting, do you start with
a pattern, then choose fabrics to convey the
idea. And you said you do most of it with hand
sewing, which is one of the reasons, I don't think I could quilt. And is the quilt stuffed
with some filling.

Right now I am embroidering the angel
on the afghan & it is taking an enormous amount
of time.

And am not sure if there are quilt shops here,
do they sell fabric remants, etc. or is it
a speciaility store just for quilting.

jan said...

Mary, you are too kind. I enjoyed working with you very much. It is great to know I made a difference with someone. Lately, Maybe its b/c I am older - I don't often feel I make a difference. You have made my day.

I wish your children lived closer to you. It means a lot when you can get to know "the little ones" when they are young infants - I think there is a bonding between grandparents and grandchildren too. I know that the grandchildren I had lots of contact with when they were very young infants are the ones I have felt the closest to as they have grown up. So, I suggest - move to Chicago for the first year of the child's life or buy lots of SW flights.

And Solar is right about ending the night with
humor...

The other re-runs I watch late are Frasier,
The Nanny, Will & Grace & Seinfeld (which I never understood how it was so popular originally since it so New York City stereo-type, would not have thought that most beyond our east coast snobbery would identify with those characters--boy was I wrong.... but again if it makes one laugh, then it is a good
thing.

Coreen, There should be quilt shops in your area. The quilt I am making is part applique (hand work) which can be done on a machine but I prefer to do it by hand. The putting together of the quilt pieces (it is pieced) I am doing on the machine. I prefer the hand work but it takes a lot more time.

I have five sewing machines - the one I am using is an old 1950 singer - that always works no matter how much I abuse it. I have 2 old featherweight singers that I bought a few years ago and need to get out and see if they work.

John bought me a new Bernina in 2003 - just before we moved to NM and I have not used it as yet. When I got it out before the 1950 singer - I couldn't find the Bernina cord. It does everything except cut the material but I need to figure out how to use it - or take some lessons. I also have a very old treadle machine - but don't know if it works. I bought it from a neighbor in ARK. I love sewing machines. The 2 featherweight singers just dropped into my lap from people who didn't want them.

Well, off to get ready so I can go to Carol's and eat. I got hungry reading about her meatloaf. I do love meatloaf sandwiches (hint, hint, Carol). She usually does send me home with food. I'll try to remember your containers.

jan said...

I too loved Seinfeld. Again, the writers were geniuses. I have never lived in NY, but after watching the show and reruns for years, feel I know a lot more about NY. I guess the characters were just so good. They had such a chemistry together. Some of the topics were universal and others were just funny.

jan said...

Well, I am off to work on the quilt.

Coreen said...

Mary,

enjoy your lunch with Carol. I do remember when I ate meat, a cold meatloaf sandwich was
pretty tasty.

And since I assume Carol will be watching her
beloved Saints shortly, there should be some
good left-overs to take home.

And Mary, didn't want to interrupt your conversation about your family & upcoming birth, but maybe sometime you could talk about
your jewelry making. How you decide what to make, where you find the supplies, I remember
Carol mentioned an ankle bracelet you made for her.

jan said...

Mary, here is a link that explains about doulas. There is a national organization that trains and certifies doulas called DONA. Some nurses are doulas but usually they are non-profs. Some doulas are birth doulas, some are prenatal doulas and some are post-partum doulas. When I get tired of staying at home I may take the course and get certified. I don't want to start any more IV's or give meds or deliver babies - I just like the emotional/phsical support part of working with childbearing women.

jan said...

Mary, I would like to hear more about your jewelry too. Maybe you or Carol could take some pics of some pieces you have made and post them - please, please.

Carol said...

Ummm, ummm, ummm, that is one yummy meatloaf. I out did myself, even if I have to say so myself.

I'm cooling some off and toasting my bread. I'm going straight to the meatloaf sandwich. Didn't want to cook any veggies, will have my big salad later.

Carol said...

I do have the Saints game on but haven't seen much of it Coreen. They are playing the Rams. I think they are 1 and 7. Hope they don't bet the Saints. That might be the kind of team that slips past us.

Carol said...

Where are ought thou Ivy?

jan said...

Coreen, back for a minute. Yes the quilt is like a sandwich with batting as the middle layer. I had Amie pick out the pattern and fabric. It is a pieced quilt with applique butterflies, dragon flies and flowers. She selected some fabrics that are not the usual baby colors - she picked out purples, lavendars and light browns. It is a lovely combination.

Coreen, I would like to hear about your afghan. Is the angel made of yarn or fabric? what are the colors?

jan said...

Carol, your meatloaf sounds delish. I had a banana and applie pie for breakfast - just now noon here. Lobie took me for a long walk - so b'fast was just a few minutes ago. John is gone so I eat really weird when I am alone. Maybe I will watch your Saints game and do some handwork. I have a friend in New Orleans who is a huge Saints fan also. Interestingly, her name is Carolyn.

Hi Rez Dog, do you live close to NM?

Solar said...

Coreen,

Chloe,

R u here? I have a comp question for you. I can't get the start bar to come up..I tried right clicking in the bottom, and the middle, tried to stretch the screen, tried to start up from the xp disc..it does say press any key, but then does not open up the prompt window,,any Ideas?

rezdog said...

Hi Jan, I live in WA State (Olympia)but am originally from OK, born and raised in Tulsa. I have lived all over US,. . OK, NY, NH, AZ, ND and traveled to all the others but AK and HI.

Just stopped in for a sec to see what's up. Now, back to some chores. Later.

Hey Jan, Forgot to ask. If you don't mind, where in NM are you?

Solar, I'm not sure exactly what your computer is doing, but if you have no taskbar/start menu:

Then 'right click' your mouse right in the middle of your desktop (a part with no icons or folders),

You'll get a drop down menu. On that left click 'Personalize'

A window will open, and on the left side, bottom: you'll see a link to open 'Taskbar and Start Menu". Left click on that.

On the Taskbar tab (far left tab) that pops up, make sure Auto-hide isn't checked. If it is, then un-check it. Make sure you left click on 'Apply' , then OK after you do that (or make any changes).

Then go through the rest of the tabs, to see if anything else is helpful.

Another thing you can do if that doesn't work:
If the taskbar is hidden, point to where you last saw it to show it again. If you can't remember where you last saw it, try pointing to the bottom of the screen first, and then to the side or top of the screen, if necessary. You might need to move the pointer almost off the screen to show the taskbar.
Let me know what happens.

Solar,

When you right click on your desktop, and click on Personalize, that box that pops up will take you to the control panel or anywhere else you want to go on your computer... those places that are hard to get to without your start menu Taskbar. You can also do a search in that box that pops up, for any questions or help you need in solving a windows problem.

Solar said...

Chloe,

Thanks, not my pc, but someone-e lses that Im trying to help. I have already tried the right click thing, and also tried it in the center, the only thing that I can get up, is the task bar mgr. and Im trying to get to repair registry, but no luck, was going to try the system restore but it wont let me in there either.

Solar said...

Chloe,

I have an Idea...im going to reboot the damn thing, and press the f8 key, that should get me to the safe mode...

"I eat really weird when I am alone"

LOL Jan. Me too! I eat pretty weird all the time, but even worse when I'm alone. You never know what will be on the menu.

Carol, I don't know why I didn't mention this earlier, but that's a pretty cool picture you used for this thread. A good find. I like to shop. If I come back in another life, I'd want to be one of those professional shoppers. Like the buyers for department stores, or something very similar. I can't think of a better way to make a living, than doing it by spending money. I think it would be a very 'creative' job, and you'd have to be very good at it, or you wouldn't have a job for long. They also get to travel. Travel would be more fun for me, if it had a purpose.

Sometimes they're just on auto hide Solar. Have you tried a restore.

(I've seen that happen before, they just get hidden sometimes.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I missed your first post. You tried all of this.

Anonymous said...

Solar, When you right click, I don't understand why you're not getting to the control panel. Mine goes right to it when I do. Then if I type restore in the search bar, it wil take me to system restore.

Is the computer Vista?

Solar said...

Chloe,

yes, I have tried several things..except throwing it against the wall...that's next..that should fix it.!!

Anonymous said...

That's how I fixed my phone the other day. Threw it on the floor a few times. Worked well.

And that was after I accidentally put it through my washer cycle with a load of clothes. I can't believe it, but it's still working. Is that a first or what. And I say I don't believe in luck. Ha.

Solar said...

No. XP.

What I decided to do after it finally let me put in the XP disc, it to install it all over again..this will erase all that was there in about 40 min it should be like new..but my friends little girl will have to start messing it up all over again...HA.!

Anonymous said...

Good job Solar. I'm sure that little girl is going to glad to have that Computer back.

Carol said...

Maybe Rez and Jan are related. She's from Oklahoma also. Maybe distant cousins a couple of times removed. Wouldn't that be weird?

Carol said...

Well, I think she is from Oklahoma.

Six degrees of separation (also referred to as the "Human Web") refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation

Carol said...

That was a scary game. Rams are 1 and 7 playing an 8 and 0 team and they came close to winning. Final score was 28-23, Saints.

Carol said...

Chloe, you might be my twin. We have more in common than Mary and I do.

Solar said...

Chloe,

Up and running now...the only thing is that, now im wondering if i should have used her xp disc instead of mine...maybe when I return it..I will do it again, with her own...

Carol said...

I'm pretty sure we were all related in our last life. That's why we found each other again.

Carol said...

Chloe, I got the sale pic off the Internet. Hope no one gets mad.

Carol said...

It's not like it is a great work of art, but this morning it was to me.

Anonymous said...

I think that's because we're at a cross section Carol. We were probably quite different earlier in our life. But I sure do feel a connection to you.

Solar, I don't know that the one you ran would make any difference (?). The important thing is that you got it running for them. What a great friend you are.

Anonymous said...

If it's on the internet, it's public property imo. A great work of art? Sure, why not. It's all in the eye of the beholder. And when I looked at it this morning, I thought it was a great find. I couldn't have found it.

Carol, My spaghetti sauce is so good, the best I've made in a while. I think it's because I got the meat and ingredients at Kroger's (instead of Walmart). I'm glad you mentioned that packaging problem the other day. Now that I think of it, the meat did taste a little more rubbery (as Ivy mentioned).

Ok, Emma's up, so I'm on my last round now. See ya later.

Rezdog,
I was born in Tulsa, lived and went to school in Owasso until I was 16 and then moved to Claremore. I left OK when I was 24. I have lived in Louisiana (met Carol there) Argentina, Montana, Texas, Arkansas and now NM.

Carol said...

OK, now what tribe does Rez belong to?

jan said...

I am tired of working on the quilt. Machine sewing makes me tireder (is that a word?) than sewing by hand. I can only work so long on a machine (like a computer) and then I have to move on and do something that I use my whole body such as laundry or cook or walk or whatever.

Chloe, do you enjoy taking care of animals?

jan said...

Chloe, your spaghetti sauce sounds good.

I tried to go to Fair's blog and leave her a comment but nooooo. I jumped thru 14 hoops and then they said they weren't accepting new people. What the sh--? I just wanted to leave a darn comment.

Hey Fair. I liked your strip story.

Guess what folks, I just wrote a new post. I surprised myself and did it. I did not have a picture to post - and would welcome anyone putting up a picture with the post. I am so proud of myself - my first posting.
