What if women ran Wall Street?

Thanks Jan for mentioning the cover of your New Time edition! Perfect timing, because Carol and I have been thinking about the power of women.

Time magazine puts FDIC Chair Sheila Bair, SEC Chief Mary Schapiro and TARP Overseer Eliabeth Warren on the cover. What this means for the re-regulation of Wall Street is worth thinking about.

“Unlike many of the men they oversee, the new sheriffs of Wall Street never aspired to eight-figure compensation packages or corporate suites. Bair, Schapiro and Warren all made their careers far from Manhattan, taking on new jobs during pregnancies and outhustling the men around them. But it is their willingness to break ranks and challenge the status quo that makes these increasingly powerful women different from their predecessors. As Washington gets down to the hard work of putting laws into place that are designed to prevent another crisis, they are shaping the way government will protect investors and consumers for the next generation. Under financial regulatory reform, which all three women support, both the SEC and the FDIC stand to win powerful new authority to limit and dismantle offenders. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency, a proposed body now working its way through the Senate, is the brainchild of Warren and is envisioned as a bulwark against what she calls the “tricks and traps” that banks hide in credit-card agreements and mortgages.” What if women ran Wall St?

... just for fun, here's a little video of Bill Clinton that is completely irresistible. I'm here to tell you that - that man just keeps getting better (and that's saying a lot). Bill Clinton on Who He Finds Influential

Sorry you felt deserted yesterday Carol. I kept up with all the comments and enjoyed them, but checked out early last night to enjoy some of my favorite past time, reading.

... sorry you didn't catch any dinner. Next week will be more lucky.

Almost forgot Carol, I checked out your theory on the Washington star, and I'm sure you're right. Washington NC is 188 miles north (and slightly east) of Richmond. So North Carolina it is. Who would have thought there'd be so many Washington's?

And I believe the FBI is practically inside DC (Arlington? - not sure exactly)

Hillary is on the same track as us this week: Clinton to Afghan women: 'We will not abandon you'

jan said...

I believe it will be women who will make the biggest difference in the world in the next 100 years. When I read the article about these 3 women in the picture on this post, I thought "yes, we (women) are the ones who make sure our children clean their rooms, we are the ones who clean up after meals, and we are the ones (all women) who need to elect women to clean up the messes made economically, ecologically, and politically. It is women, and a few good men, who want to make this world a better place for our children, nieces & nephews, grandchildren and future generations everywhere a better place than we found it.

There is a saying that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We have seen this happen time and again with men entrusted to making big decisions affecting commerce and politics. I think it can happen with women too but women are more grounded in the everyday issues of keeping a household running and seeing that children get to school and soccer or ballet practice so there is ususally little time left over for thinking about the cute intern or making another billion dollars. When others talk of needless wars, women think not of just there own children but children in other countries who would be sent to war. It is thoughts like these that ground women in everyday life that make women well-served to take the lead in matters important to their countries.

Chloe, I loved the video of Bill Clinton. He is a good man.

Carol said...

Hip, hip, hooray, Chloe and Jan. But women don't always recognize thier
own or other women's worth. They have allowed this mess to continue. It's time to take charge! Over and out.

Coreen said...

The value of women being in positions of power
gets no argument from me, but as for the
specific wall street mess...must remain vigilant as to the ultimate reform that is passed....will they listen to the 'new sheriffs of wall street' or simply water down
their reforms & leave them with no teeth...

And Carol, I was responding to Chloe's comments about her recent visit to tm as the'fray'...

I think that decision making is best if balanced, like the concept of yin yang (in this case: male/female). Too much slant either way throws off the balance. The problem is, there have been almost all men making the important decisions about how to run our country for far too long - but we're in the process of changing that now - moving in the direction of more equality. Actually, we've been headed in that direction for a long time, but it's finally looking within reach.

Anonymous said...

"I was responding to Chloe's comments about her recent visit to tm as the'fray'"

You know Coreen, I probably should have never talked here about that feeling I got - and the subsequent decision I made not go back to TM. It was more of a personal thing, and had nothing to do with the place as a whole or most of the people there either.

When I say personal, I just meant that whatever I say there is almost always misunderstood (or so I felt) and as a result, I was getting a very negative feeling whenever I tried to join in. The place just made me feel bad about myself (of course, there's a whole different argument there, since we create 'our own' reality - but I'm going to leave it at that, and forget about the psychology involved), so I decided not to go back.

The reason I say I probably shouldn't have talked about that feeling here - no, I'm going to rephrase. The reason I mentioned it here, is because I've enjoyed the idea that I can say whatever I'm feeling when I'm here, and I get a lot off my chest by doing so, so I just talk about anything that happens to feel important to me at any given time. It's wasn't meant to be a bad reflection on anyone or anything else.

Sometimes the bottom line isn't all that matters. Sometimes the process may be more important (in my opinion).

Glad to see you were here Solar, and thanks for your response to what I had been talking about.

Jan, Emma is doing great. She had no more problems as a result of that fall she had. She does have several words she says, but understands a lot more.

(She's getting cuter everyday, and I'll take some pics in the near future - they change so quickly. Before we know it, Mary will be sharing some pics of her new grandbaby too.)

Bad storm. Hunkered down with the Mag. Almost dead Iphony. Nail in my tire. Great day. Think I may have found a house siitter.

Carol said...

I was kidden with you guys. You know
what mean. And I understand where you
are coming from Chloe. No explaining needed.

Coreen said...

Carol, Just checked & yes looks like you are
getting creamed...& the pattern extends up to
Texas near someplace called Lufkin, heading southeast toward you I guess...interesting pattern, since here we rarely get weather moving north to south...but when the weather
comes from the atlantic ocean, we call it a noreaster....

We are awaiting 1-2" of rain starting overnight, with raw, cold rain through the middle of the week...but ithas been really lovely weather, so no complaints...

Coreen said...

Chloe, no need for you to explain your thoughts, my intent was to offer support for
you decision (which could be subject to change)...it's a good thing to sometimes
just listen, observe....

Carol said...

OK. I think the worst is over. I was trying to type on Iphony without my cheaters. Didn't want to use anything plugged in. Lightening was snapping everywhere. Mag is jammed in close by. I'll get a can opener to get her out.

On my way home from the house I ran over a little bitty piece of wood, looked like a pine knot, and then heard clank, clank, clank. There is now a big screw with a washer in my tire. It isn't leaking yet. I went and sprayed some soapy water on it, no bubbles. I will have to figure a way to run by Walmart, where I got the tires, for them to get it out. I hope I have air in it in the morning. I can't do it after work tomorrow because I have that Dr. appointment and already missed it once.

Chloe, don't worry about the TM stuff, I know what you are talking about. Feel the same way. Don't ever feel like you can't say what you feel here. We all understand. I do like the Craigster and want to show him my support.

Carol said...

As for the house sitter, you know I was looking for someone to stay at my house, take care of it but I still need to wash clothes and use the pool and possibly stay there if the river rises. That wasn't going to be an easy find.

The pool guy, who is the boyfriend of one of my nurses, I like her, asked if I would consider renting my house out. I asked why. He said that his girlfriend was going to be looking for a new place to rent. Her landlord wasn't doing things that needed to be done and her rent was high.

I thought, hmmmmmm, might be just what I'm looking for. They don't live together. He stays with his sick mom and takes care of her. I'm sure they do spend lots of time together.

She could be more like my roommate but I just won't be there much. She could take care of the place, pay the utilities, but no rent. He said then I wouldn't even have to pay for the pool maintanance since he would be using the pool. He would probably also take care of the yard. I like them both very much. They are quiet, not the partying type and like to do most of the stuff I like to do.

jan said...

Carol, this sounds like a great deal for you.

jan said...

Chloe, I agree that we need a balance of power - that probably means gender-wise also. We certainly are not yet balanced in any of our branches of government in terms of gender. If all goes well, we are moving in,that direction on the Supreme Court.

Carol said...

Now what is the percentage of women in the population? Somewhere around 51%?? We need to at least have the same representation. Not just any women but some good women.

jan said...

I just looked this up online and there are on average 97.1 males per 100 females. That surprises me. Because as people age there are more women than men I would have thought the percentage of women compared to men was a good big larger.

Carol said...

I found that in 2004 there was 57.8% women in the US pop.

Carol said...

What is the date for your data Jan?

Thanks guys. Now we know how many representatives we need to shot for. Only problem is that we still have far too many women who don't trust other women. Of course Sarah didn't do us any favors, did she?

Carol said...

That is the best Chad's posture has ever been.

Coreen said...

Looks like everyone brought their 'A' game tonite...

Carol said...

You're right Coreen.

Coreen said...

I can see this coming down to the 2 women vying for the mirror ball trophy...1st & 2nd
place finishes...with an edge still to nicole...

My final 3 are still nicole, evan & erin...

Coreen said...

Forget the 'edge'....Nicole & Derek are it...period, exclamation point.!

Carol said...

Who gave them a 9? Can I guess? I ran for cantaloupe.

Carol said...

For a tall football player to do so well is very impressive.

Coreen said...

And they all could have given Chad a 9.....

Carol said...

Chad may not be the best but he has certainly come the farthest.

Carol said...

I think he was much better than his scores demonstrated.

Coreen said...

And in the meantime a typical yankee/red sox
game bottom of the 5th 7-5 NYY....

a long night as usual when they play....anything goes...

Carol said...

Nail bitter huh Coreen?

Carol said...

biter?

Carol said...

He's even made progress tonight. Almost seems like a different dancer.

Coreen said...

oh,oh 7-6 NYY still up by one...its only the top of the 6th...

You see for Yankee fans...the only team we really detest is the Boston Red Sox...But with
Tampa Bay not losing & in 1st place ahead of the Yankees....they are not to be dismissed...but the long-time rivalry of yanks/red sox is classic....

Coreen said...

No question a really great group this time around...& yes evan was exceptional...and for the guy to be the 'non-dancer pro' I think that
may be more difficult to lead the couple....

Nicole & Evan tied at 59...can it get any closer....

Coreen said...

And not to be mistaken for a psychic... but this just turned up at the NYT....have to think the author is not really a Yankee fan, since regardless of the changes in players, Yankeefans still hate the red sox....

And in typical fashion the Red Sox are now ahead 9-7 in the bottom of the 8th....good thing it's a long season...not time to get upset...

For Yankees & Red Sox, Rivalry loses personality

Carol said...

Sorry Coreen. Don't you still have one more inningleft ? Don't laugh, I'm not that baseball savvy.

Coreen said...

And to put the final stamp on tonite's Yankee
saga....YANKEES WIN!!! 11 to 9 with 2 - 2 run home runs....ARod ties it with a 2 run homer & then with 2 outs, Cerville on 1st after being hit with the pitch, Marcus Thames with a walk off 2 run homer to win it!!!!

And Marcus Thames gets the pie in the face for
the win....

Only Yankee/red sox rivalry could be this great...I love this game...And Good night....

testing

Carol said...

I just pulled up the blog on a different tab and none of my posts between Coreen's post were there. I refreshed and they didn't come up. I typed in testing and that came up but not the posts I wrote between what Coreen wrote. Something weird going on here.

Carol said...

Now my posts have disappeared from the other tab I pulled up.

Carol said...

Someone is screwing with this blog.

Carol said...

All of my posts keep disappearing from this blog. I'm the only one who can do that. Someone has taken over.

Carol said...

Then they come back and then they disappear. It's also happening when I pull up the blog on Iphone.

Carol said...

Now they are back. There's a poltergist here.

Anonymous said...

""Something weird going on here."

... a little temporary insomnia here, then I read your last comments Carol, and now I'm laughing.

It's enough to drive you nuts sometimes. The same things happened to me here before too. It starts feeling like hitting your head against a wall, and then you try to explain it to the others, and it feel's almost unexplainable.

Anonymous said...

"There's a poltergeist here. "

Ha! I've suspected that for quite a while now. Remember a while back we called it the Twilight Zone? But hey, it just adds to the fun - can be frustrating, but still fun.

.. ah, life's little mysteries.

Congrats on your Yankee's win Coreen!

"Bad storm. Hunkered down with the Mag. Almost dead Iphony. Nail in my tire. Great day. Think I may have found a house sitter."

The thunder was loud here, but didn't last all that long. Luckily Em isn't bothered by it, so slept right through it. You have no choice but to get used to it here. But I do have a pup that is very neurotic when the thunder starts, and like Maggie, he hides. Not much you can do to console them when they're that afraid of the noise.

I'll be surprised if that tire still has air in the morning. We have a little tire shop we always take our to for repairs (even though we rarely buy the tires there). It's always quick and it's cheap.

Anonymous said...

As far as the house sitter Carol - that sure did happen fast. You're one of those people who can put your thoughts out there (in the Universe) and get a quick response. It always takes me a lot longer, although I usually do eventually succeed.

With a little forethought, everything goes together almost like a puzzle. Ha.. at least on a good day. Yours sounds like it was sorta half and half today (yesterday).

Anonymous said...

... nice set up with an 'almost' live in pool boy. That thing should be sparkling all the time, if the arrangement goes together.

Make sure you get them to throw in the yard work too though (and maybe even feeding Fiddler(?)). You've got to cover all the stuff that's important to you up front, while you're still negotiating.

Lay out all the rules ahead of time Carol. That way no one gets mad about anything later. Boundaries are important.

Carol said...

You guys see how my posts are scattered between Coreen's post? Well they were there one minute and gone the next. Off on on. They didn't all disappear at the same time either. I was checking this out from more than one source. As you can also see, Coreen wasn't responding to me so she couldn't see them either. It was like I was talking to myself. Now I have had experience there.

Carol said...

Did anyone else see anything weird last night. I can see them all my posts this morning. And it was my posts that were coming and going. As the administrator, I can make something disappear but can't make it reappear once it's gone and I have only removed porn.

Carol said...

I thought that maybe someone had hacked into my computer and was screwing with the blog but it was doing things that I can't do or don't realize I can do.

Carol said...

And I didn't find it particularly amusing last night Chloe. If I had any borderline psychotic tendencies, it could have pushed me over the edge. Here I was giving Coreen's Yanks a little of my good luck, and mind you it was working, and my posts were coming and going. If you can see this post please say...yes.

Carol said...

You are right Chloe, I do need to sit down with my friends and decide on some rules. I haven't known these people very long but I do have a good feeling about them.

I pondered it all last night. The rules need to protect each side. She doesn't want the rug pulled out from under her either if I would suddenly change my mind. I don't want this venture to cost me more than what it does now to just sit there.

Carol said...

No little kids involved and she only has a big bird. Little kids would worry me. Too much liability. They don't drink.

I was also thinking that maybe my new roomy could even keep my Maggie if I should want to go somewhere. I also have an NP who has been orienting with me and could give me some relief at work should I want to take a real vacation. The Universe seems to be looking for a way to take care of me, and without me forcing it. Another weird thing but a good weird thing.

Carol said...

I just went out to walk the Magster and there were about 10 teenage ducks swimming by. I guess HB has released her brood. I haven't been down there to check on them in a couple of weeks.

Carol said...

And Chloe, the tire still has air in it this morning. The guy who stopped right after I ran over the piece of wood said he thought that it would be OK for a while. He almost promised it would. He said he was a retired cop. He said if it wasn't that he would come help me change it but I don't know who he is or where he came from.

Carol said...

Coreen, did you see my posts, that are inbetween your posts, last night??

Coreen said...

It's morning & I see you guys were busy last night...and no Carol, none of your posts were
here last night when the Yankee game was on.... no one else was around at all...

Where were your posts?....that's what happens
when you become a C2C listener.....

Carol, as far a your potential renters...I would only caution that in the event it does not work out, you need to know your rights as
far as having them leave....

And if you are not intending to have them pay rent, you should consider at least costs
of upkeep of your home, property taxes, insurance, utitlities & such...

Not sure how strong your landlord/tenant laws
are there, here it is difficult, time consuming & costly to remove a tenant....even with a written lease, laws allow the tenant
several months to stay & most of the time, they
do not pay rent during that time, not to mention the damage that is left at the property...as you can see I am not an advocate
of having tenants, (especially since it is your home, not simply an investment property) since the unknown cost if it goes wrong is usually an unhappy experience for the owner...

Carol said...

Glad to hear I was wrong about that tire Carol. That's the worst feeling: to wake up to a flat tire. Sounds like your friend knew what he was talking about.

Also, all that stuff that Coreen said sounds right on. Glad to hear it's simply a roommate agreement. Good thinking.

Anonymous said...

"If I had any borderline psychotic tendencies, it could have pushed me over the edge.

LOL! Believe me, I've felt the same way. I find it's best to just turn off the computer for a while when weird things start happening, but I'm usually so anxious to figure out what's going on that I can't give up. Shutting down and restarting usually does the trick for me.

I'm glad to hear the baby duckies have made it to the water. HB obviously knows what she's doing when it comes to ducks.

Anonymous said...

All kidding aside, I agree that the weird stuff isn't funny when it's happening Carol. Just when we talk about it later.

... I mean, that thing you said about being pushed over the edge (if we weren't stable) is so true (but funny). When things like that happen, it's like 'reality itself' is screwing with us. It's hard to logically categorize what is happening.

Carol said...

What is weird is that my comments

Oh yes, I watched DWTS last night too. I thought they all did great but Nicole and Derek were the best. Evan and his pro came in 2nd and Erin and her pro were 3rd. This is what I think. People do vote based on who they like best though and on personality so it could be anybody's guess.

Ahhhh. Just sat down to rest. I did hear the results of DWTS and was not surprised.

I'm not sure how long I've been on my new diet but I think it was a little over a month, about the time Chloe put up that healthy foods post. That's when I got much more attentive to it. Most of my diet is low in cholesterol. Not sure about my father's cholesterol because testing it wasn't popular back then. He died at age 51 of cancer. Mom's may have been high but nothing really bad that I can remember. No heart disease.

A grandmother, father's side, died when I was 5 of heart disease but that's the only one who did. She was overweight.

My Doc knows how I feel about taking meds so she said we would wait and see what I can do without them. Definitely more exercise needed. Will be swimming soon. Pool is 85 degrees.

Carol, I feel the same as you. I don't like to take meds either and will avoid them until absolutely necessary.

Jan, I think I got about as much good advice as I need right here in the Swamp. I just need to keep it up and add the exercise. A few more veta vita vegamins also.

Right on Carol!

you were right, no surprises on DWTS.

We have an ellipitical. It really gets my heart rate up and is easy on the joints. Ours is not electric. Does not take up too much space.

Carol, I love that TV segment of I Love Lucy and Vita vegamins. She played a great drunk. I also loved the one where she and Ethel were wrapping chocolates on the assembly line.

Coreen thanks for the advice on the house. If any of you think of something I haven't, please feel free to tell me. It is really mainly a roommate situation and to help me maintain and protect the property. I don't want my house to get lonely or deteriorate cuz I'm not there much but I am there every day. I still want to right to go there every day. I don't want this to cost me more than what it cost me now in any way. I want it to make it easier on me. I physically can't keep everything up. I will make that clear.

I told my new roomie to write down what she wants to include in our agreement and I will do the same and we can negotiate the rules. I have a good feeling that they aren't people who plan to take advantage of me and I'm not someone who would take advantage of anyone either. I believe in Karma!

Coreen, as a roommate, if all hell would break loose, something serious would come up, I could say out out, huh? I want to retain the right to say, if at any time, this arrangement puts me in any personal or professional jeopardy, it's over.

My roomie doesn't have a big income and wants to save up to buy a place of her own. This will give her that opportunity.

I've been thinking that in our current economical situation, we all need to learn to share, to barter. There was something that I heard on NPR one morning about how someone, I think in New York, has been exchanging services for services. She was a professional lady.

Jan, I pulled up both Crystal's and Lee's video this morning and they are both great.

I love the song Lee did also.

I'm no where near caught up, but...

Jan, It's best to have your main email server not tied into the company that provides your internet service. Yahoo mail is 'WEB BASED' and works no matter how many times we change servers. I think we've had our yahoo email about 8 years and have changed servers many times. Ha, that and our phone number, one of the few constants in our life.

Yahoo opened up a new bank of email addresses not that long ago called YMail, so the signin may give you a choice. Their email service is, in my opinion, the best around ('course I like them for my home page and search too) and it's FREE. https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify2?&.src=ym

.... Jan, at that link, there a place to click on the right side (down toward the bottom) that says Sign Up.

Carol, Since you mentioned reaching your target, I have started to do well on my diet too. I'm taking it slow and easy, but have already lost a couple of pounds. I know how important habits are (since that's what we'll be doing when we shift into auto drive, if stressed) so I always try to stay conscious of the habits and patterns I'm forming, whether it's the food I'm eating, or anything else.

I like to stay lean, because I feel better, and feel better about myself. A while back, when I was checking out what's new over on Science Daily, it seemed like every headline was about the connection between disease and being overweight. The greatest thing about eating healthy, is you don't have those constant cravings you get when you're trying to live on too much junk food.

I printed a copy of that food pyramid from Dr. Weil's site and hung it on the front of my refrigerator a while back. I see it every time I open the fridge, so it keeps me on the right track. All my favorite foods are on the bottom two sections of that pyramid anyway.

I just went over to that Science site to link the page with all those articles, and it's about completely different things now. OK... I'm going to chalk it up to synchronicity - that was what I needed to see that day in order to firm up my resolve.
Now I just need to muster up some resolve to exercise. I start a few days, then quit - over and over again.

Chloe, I admire your ability to stay lean and on a program to eat healthy. My biggest problem is I love sweets and when I am stressed (like most of the time) I eat more sweets than I should.
My saving grace is I like to exercise. I love walking and swimming. I like to exercise in the morning and work commitments have gotten in the way of my morning exercise - so that is one of my big reasons for wanting out of a full time job. In 1 and 1/2 weeks I will begin my eating program. I actually love healthy foods but like I said earlier, I also love sweets and in the late afternoon and evening this is my "downfall." I am going to start writing down everything I eat also - that should help. You guys here inspire me to do better.

Carol,

While I know you are considering your tentative house arrangement a roommate situation, pretty sure it is not really a 'roommate' event, since you are the owner of the property.

Generally roommates either jointly or one of them have contracted with an owner to rent the premises usually by a lease & then for whatever reason have another person share the responsibilities of the tenancy & between those roommates agree on terms of the living arrangement....

While you should be able to enter into a written agreement of the terms of the person or
persons living arrangements, I am still concerned about the legal obligations for you
if it fails to work out as you are anticipating.

Not sure what if any expenses/rent is going to be paid, the idea of you coming & going as a 'roommate' in the home, and again what
happens if it doesn't work out. Who takes care of what, etc.

For me, legally I feel that you are entering into a landlord/tenant event & should
be sure to spell out the terms not only of each
side's responsibilities, but what happens if
the arrangement has to end, what is the term of the tenancy...month to month, annual.

Do you use an attorney in your town that you could call & ask what would be best to cover
your rights if it does not work out...

What little I found about LA is that there are
local courts that have jurisdiction if a tenant does not comply with terms of the lease,
not sure about what you are calling a roommate
agreement, as I said, you are not simply a roommate, but an owner agreeing to allow an
individual to reside in your home on whatever terms you are considering between the parties..

My concern remains protecting you in the event
it does not work out the way you are anticipating.

"My biggest problem is I love sweets"

Jan, I love sweets too! Didn't you know I'm the resident junk food junkie here. Carol inspired me to go on this diet and I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't want to lose a few pounds.

When I was talking about the food pyramid, etc.. well, that's just because I'm focused on it right now. I actually believe you eat a LOT healthier than I normally do Jan - you all do - but I'm trying. :)

... most of the things I talk about here are things I'm working on - and I'm working on them because I'm the one that needs to learn them.

"My saving grace is I like to exercise"

I sure wish I had that quality Jan.

The 'only' way I stay off sweets is to not bring them in the house. Once I've made that decision, it becomes second nature quickly. Not having sweets handy almost guarantee's I'll lose weight.

The reason I said that I lose my cravings when I start eating a lot of healthy, nutrient rich food, is because when I am eating junk food, I tend to overeat throughout the day. So that's the way I work it - I say no to sweets (for as long as it lasts).

And NEVER let yourself get too hungry. Always have fruits and melons and salad stuff available for emergencies. I just had some delicious corn on the cob.

... what's really weird is how indescribably delicious all the healthy foods start tasting.
