Springtime, from babbling brook to rapids

It's just the first week of spring here, the forsythia is just starting to pop and just about a week ago we had a classic Nor'easter.....
I pass a stream daily & after the storm, I stopped & took these pictures, the stream had become a rapidly moving river...What I could not capture for you was the sounds, the rushing water sounded like a waterfall....when usually it is just a meandering quiet stream...

Still waiting for spring to really pop, no crocus, hyacinth, or daffodils yet.....And the weeping cherries are still just buds.... But not much longer and Spring should really be here....

While you guys may be enjoying spring already
we are still waiting patiently for it to pop...in the meantime, I snapped these pics of
a stream I pass everyday....This last week or
so, the little stream has overrun its banks & has been moving really
fast & the noise of the water is really loud...
all the remnants of the storm from more than a week ago...

Coreen, Beautiful post. Love the stream pictures, and your wrong - somehow you did capture the sound in your pics (I could actually hear it :) Your pics enlarged beautifully, and I got to sed the smaller pic (which enlarged surprisingly well) that had the sign, that said it is a wild trout stream, and I was happy to see it's catch and release only.

You're right about Spring being close - once it starts, it happens so fast. I love this time of the year. Hello Sunshine!

Nice post Coreen. Even though Spring hasn't popped there yet those are some nice pictures. That stream particularly peaked my interest.

I kinda figured it would take lots of vegetables to make juice so that's why I didn't want to invest a lot in a juicer. I've just been eating the fruits and veggies so far.

I went by the Garden Show, brought my pic of the shrub we tried to identify and found out what it was. It's a Mexican Turk's Cap. I bought a couple of small ones in case the one out here doesn't come back. I saw lots of things at that vendor I would have liked to buy but I parked too far away to carry them. They have a nursery about an hour northwest of here.

I'm going over to check out your links now, but first I want to leave a message for Jan.

We miss you Jan! Maybe I wasn't around last time you were her, because it seems like a while. Hope your Spring is starting too.

... and to say hi to Solar. Sounds like you're doing well.

Also Carol, glad that all is well with Maggie (and you).

Ivy, I was in and out of here so fast this morning, that I missed who was here too. Enjoying your posts!

I heard the babbling also. I have plenty of those tapes in my head that I can call on whenever I need them.

As always, my pleasure guys...As you can see, the trees here are still pretty
bare, you can almost see a little haze of
red or green on some of them, but we need some warmth...the sun is bright but the couple of
65+ days have gone away & its chilly...maybe
by Easter.

Carol, Chloe, do you both now have juicers?

When you try it Carol & Chloe, I'll be interested to know if yours left as much pulp as the one we had. There is stil a Jack Lalanne model at my aunt's, which may leave less pulp matter, but have to say the amount of stuff needed, plus the cleanup just seems not quite worth it.

I guess I'd just rather eat the fruit/veggies too Carol and believe me the taste w/o the apples was not pleasant (I'm wrinkling my nose, just remembering how I did not like it). Oh, & if you try it, you probably should drink it shortly after juicing, since it separates & the color is really not that inviting (orange or greenish)...guess I'm just not a juicer afficianado...

Carol, I didn't even know you were here when I was clicking away a while back. Missed your post completely. That's a nice shrub - were your flowers the same color? Don't those grow wild out here, or am I misidentifying it?

Carol said...

I remember many years ago, somewhere out of town, going to a juice bar and getting a mixture of vegetables juiced. It sounded so nice like having a V-8 but it was, gag me with a spoon, nasty tasting. They didn't add any apple to mine. I don't think I choked it all down.

Anonymous said...

Coreen, I don't use a juicer - I can't figure out any reason to get rid of the pulp. I use a blender - it's quick and easy. I usually use blue and black berries, strawberries, pineapple and peaches (I like frozen, because then I have an icy) I also use grapes or grape juice, and apple juice (added to it), along with fat free yogurt - then just start my blender. It is 'so' delicious.

Since fruits are plant ovaries, I figure they've the healthiest food on earth - everything necessary for life, imo.

They might grow wild Chloe. Have you seen any in your area? That's the first one I've ever seen.

They would be nice to have around since they flower from late Spring until Fall and the hummers and the butterflies love the flowers.

The one out here was a little more red and it had yellow highlights. I think there is a picture in one of my posts a while back. There is:

Carol, I think you're smart to just 'eat' the veggies. I tried adding them to my shake once, and had to toss it. Except for carrots, which I've added and they're fine.

Anonymous said...

Carol, It looks real similar to some we have, but they're not flowering right now, so I can't be sure. There the same type of light weight leaves. I check them out again next to your picture, in a few days. I think these go dormant though.

Oh.. I remember when you posted that now. It's beautiful. I think it must be different than what I'm talking about - I can't imagine me forgetting that flower.

The Turk's Cap grows in 8B, 9, 10, 11. May need covering in 8B. It's a tropical. You could grow them over there Chloe if you don't already do. Do you have much Wisteria growing over there? I love Wisteria, the purple ones. Smells good too.

Carol said...

Chloe, are you taking any Easter pics of the
Emster? We need some. Are you going to dye eggs and hide them in the house or yard?

I bought a cartoon of eggs and this tie dye egg coloring kit. It looked cool and, again, it was on the way to the Gold Brick eggs. I think I will dye some eggs next weekend and then make some deviled eggs. I can smash up some plain ones for Maggie. Don't know if she will like them but she'll be eating extra soft next week. They will have to extract the loose teeth in the front.

I think I'll need a pre-op before her surgery.

Coreen if U put in 4 to 5 large carrots, one apple, and a slice of beat..it will taste good..u are right about the apple for a sweetener...over crushed ice..and it tastes pretty good to me...I put in the apple first. just seed it...then the beat, and last the carrots, not pealed, the apple whole...I do sometimes add spinach....

MY son tells me that after 2 months now juicing, that he feels much better, more energy, and his skin is tighter..don't know about that, but that's what he said...

I will go and find my book on it, and post a few recipes...don't give up on it

Will catch up on this new thread now.!

Carol said...

But Solar, how many lbs of veggie/fruit for a cup of juice? Isn't eating all that fiber you pull out good for you also. I wouldn't particularly want to eat a beet so the juice might be a better option.

Chloe, I bought the frozen blueberries because I couldn't find an expiration date on the fresh one to tell how fresh they were. I like the icy taste also. I bet they freeze the frozen ones right away so they may have retained their nutrients better.

So far today I've only had fruits, veggies and nuts. Now I'm gonna throw in a big fully loaded salad and a little spicy lemon chicken to go with a movie.

Solar said...

If anyone wants to juice, there is some work to it...I have a Jack L. and it cleans up easy and fast....

I put in one large apple (cut in half) into the mouth of the juicer.....then a slice of beat, and then 5 large carrots..over crushed ice..it tastes very good..i drink this right away....I sometimes add spinach, kale, or anything that I might want....the pulp is collected in a basket that is easy to throw out...or make a freekin cake out of...but U don't eat it.!!

Pancreas rejuvenatory.

What is good for the pancreas is good for the entire body no? If U want to get healthy I recommend this to everyone.

4 carrots, one apple, 4-5 lettuce leaves, 3 ounces of string beans (3/4 cup) 3 ounces of Brussels sprouts...3-4 sprouts...add a slice of beat for iron, and some color...

juicing and eating fruit is different..so U will need to pick up a book on jugging.....or not...but there is no comparison for health and energy...and don't forget to exercise....but maybe their is a magic wand at K-Mart......

Solar said...

jugging = juicing...

Carol, Yes I'll be taking Easter pics. And dying eggs and welcoming the Easter bunny (can't 'believe' I'm doing all this stuff again). Those egss or a lot better for you than the Gold Brick eggs, imo. I'm not going to be fanatical, but I'm going to make a genuine effort not to get Emma addicted to candy and junk food too much (in other words, I'll need to behave, because she'll follow my example. She loves fruits, some vegetables, and lots of the good things, just as much as she enjoys a cookie, for instance. I want to make things easy for her later, by leading her in the right direction now. But she'll definitely get a yummy little easter basket (with toys too, in order to keep the candy to a minimum.

Carol, Maggie will get through that surgery wit no problem. I've had maybe a hundred animals (or so) go under for surgery, to be neutered or spayed over the last 25 years or so, and I've never had a problem with any of them.

You said you're superstitious, so it's important that you 'expect' a good outcome. Do what Ivy says, and push any of the scary thoughts away (very gently).

Carol, I just looked up Wisteria pictures, and it is beautiful!!

Can we grow it here? I wonder if they even sell it at the nurseries? If not, I'm sure I could buy it online.

Does it grow there in Louisiana? I've seen it in movies in places like Italy, but don't remember if I've seen it in real life - I'm not sure.

Anonymous said...

Solar, That recipe sound really healthy. How many times a week do you usually juice? I have to make anything I do everyday easy, or I know I won't keep it up.

I think it's important to have something like that to pack in lots of nutrients on a fairly regular basis. I know Coreen and Carol like lots of salads, which I think is a great habit. I want to start eating them again too - enjoy them a lot more often during the spring and summer season.

I don't get the concept that juice separated from the fruit or vegetable is better for you than having the whole unit of fruit or vegetable. But I've heard it before, and know some people swear by it.

Carol said...

Chloe, thanks for the Maggie support. I'm going to try to wait and worry about that unpleasant stuff later. Ya'll better be prepared for some heavy support next week. I'm gonna need it. I started her antibiotic tonight so I could watch her carefully after she took it. I don't think she's ever taken any before.

And I only have one Gold Brick a day while they last, dark chocolate with nuts. That's not bad for you.

I'm watching a movie, playing spider solitaire and keeping up with the blog, all on the same computer. I'm waiting for it to start smoking.

Anonymous said...

Here's a page that seems to fairly compare the two (and I don't think it's trying to sell you on one or the other).

The juicer advantage is on the second half of the page, and seems to be a matter of quicker absorption into your blood stream.

.... seems it may be a matter of personal preference and individual health needs.
Blender or Juicer: Is it better to juice or to drink smoothies?

Anonymous said...

"I'm going to try to wait and worry about that unpleasant stuff later"

Carol, Good plan, that's what I do too.

Nothing wrong with eating candy Carol, unless you are a sugar junkie like me. I eat it too, but try to keep myself from going off the deep end. Giving up most of my sweets is a sure way to lose weight when I want to. Most of the things I talk about are goals, ideals (that I rarely achieve, unfortunately).

I'd like to talk a little about Russell Targ again tomorrow or next week. I've been slow reading his book, because I made the mistake of downloading another novel, and ended up really getting hooked on it fast. I've been reading at least a few pages of Targ a night for the last couple of weeks. It also takes a while to digest - but I'm extremely interested.

I was going to say first, what a beautiful post, Coreen...

But instead, I first must say you blew me away when I got to your comment, Chloe, by reflecting back something that I don't remember saying in so many words:

"Do what Ivy says, and push any of the scary thoughts away (very gently)."

...except for the fact it's what my sponsor says all the time. I can hear the echo of her voice in what you wrote...this morning, in fact, she said, not just to me, but to everyone assembled, to take it one step further by measuring your time of response between "reaction and recovery." The more you work at these principles, the shorter your time between the two will become.
Reaction = scary thoughts. Recovery = reassuring thoughts.

Chloe, thank you for your insight. Hope you have a great night.

Coreen,
I first opened the thread on Hubs' computer which is bigger than mine, and the photos took my breath away. My favorite color in nature is yellow, especially when it shows up against the barren landscape of winter, as it does with the forsythia and the daffodils.

Not long ago, I realized I have changed the palette of our landscape to all yellow all the time. Daffodils and tulips in the spring; lantana, sunflowers, and lilies in the summer; mums in the fall; yellow pansies in the winter...

Carol said...

My take on the juicing business would be that with juicing you will get a much greater quantity of nutrients, ie vitamins, minerals with the juicing. You just wouldn't get the fiber/bulk. There's a lot more fruits and veggies that you can drink than what you could eat by trying to eat the whole fruit or vegetable.

If you limit the amount of fruit, you will also limit the carbs in the drink because theres a lot of carbs in fruits where not as much in veggies but you are eating a greater quantity of veggies so you will get more than if you just ate the whole veggie.

I'd recommend pealing the fruits and veggies if they can be pealed so you decrease the amount of pesticide or fungicide you consume also. Or buy organic. Walmart used to have a little more organic fruits but haven't seen much lately. I love grapes, strawberries and cherries but they are usually covered with chemicals. I'd pay more to get them chemical free.

We do need our fiber though so either Metamucil or another source is needed.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I was actually surprised reading the Metamucil label recently at how relatively little fiber there is in that can in relation to its cost. There must be a better way, I thought.

Carol,
Does that Turk's Cap come in yellow??

Interesting choice of color Ivy. Yellow is used to represent caution/hazard. With signs they use yellow to signal caution/alert. It grabs your attention.

But then again yellow represents sunshine and happiness.

I saw that the Turks Cap does come in a pink, Ivy. Not sure about yellow. If you look at that old blog post I put up, linked here, the one we had out here did have some yellow highlights or maybe that was just the sun reflecting off of the flowers.

Carol,
I passed on your observation about the rain in Portland. Miss College said she's considering that, along with the snowfall amounts in Massachusetts. Her final answer will come on Wednesday. Don't be surprised if it's Portland. I can't wait to visit that bookstore. lol

Carol said...

Ivy, I'm glad I had a printer out here. When I heard about the garden show, I found the pic on my computer and printed it up. I went to a vendor that had lots of unusual plants and shrubs. I gave the pic to the guy at the register and he brought it to an older woman. She named it right away. She was kind of like you are with the birds.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I forgot to note that our crepe myrtle blooms white, and there are some other whitey blooming shrubs in the front...it does soften the all yellow. I love lilies of the valley too, but they are a plant of the northern forest floor - they don't do very well in our heat and humidity, but I keep trying.

Carol said...

That bookstore is a treat Ivy. I had a fascination with Mount St. Helens. When I went to the bookstore, I found this used book written about the old guy, Harry Truman, who lived on the lake near Mount St Helens. He got deeply buried when that volcano blew. They interviewed him on TV several times when that volcano was fixing to blow it's top. He refused to leave his little lodge. I think his neice wrote the book and the copy I bought was autographed.

Carol said...

I'm not a great reader but I am totally in awe of bookstores. When I go into one, I'm overwhelmed thinking about all the knowledge and imagination that is captured in one place.

On the Portland wiki, there are pictures of the landscape showing Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood in one vista. I pointed out to her the relative flatness of the top of Mt. St. Helens compared to Mt. Hood. I have never seen them in person, so I imagine it's more awesome when you're there.

Ivy, I was obscessed with Mt. St. Helens from the time it was being covered on TV prior to the eruption. I read everything I could get my hands on. I have a bunch of stuff at the house. I even have videos of much of it. The little book was pretty cool too.

If she does go there, ya'll need to go see it. It's a sight. Lots of hiking trails. You can still see the devastation but all the life that has returned also. It came back much faster than they ever imagined it would.

Carol said...

Mt St Helens has a big bubble on top again. It's growing. They have a volcano cam. I'll try to find it. You can watch the volcano.

Interesting story about Dave Johnston. He was a geologist set up there with a little camper a ways from the volcano, monitoring it prior to it's eruption. I think his last words were Vancover, Vancover, this is it. Something like that. He was supposed to be off duty but he stayed over to take someone else's duty for an extra day. His dust is scattered all over the place. They have an observatory on the mountain named after him.

I'll take the sermon today. Well not a sermon but just a ponder. Don't want to start a new post because I like the pics on this one and we still have room left. Don't worry, it's short.

Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be.

Que Sera Sera

I'm quite sure you all remember this song. The song was published in 1956 and we were all just little girls or boys back then.

Worrying about Maggie and the surgery, I woke up with those words in my head. I know Chloe doesn't like to think that we all may have some destiny that is out of our hands or control but in a way it gives me some peace, maybe not peace exactly, but less guilt to think that that may be the case. I should have been Jewish, with all my focus on guilt. Probably was in another life and can't shake it.

I like this concept, whatever will be will be, because I don't have to feel totally reponsible for the outcome of a decision I make. I make what I believe to be the best decision with the information I have and then the outcome is in the hands of the Universe/God. What do you think?

I didn't know what Que Sera Sera meant. I pulled up google translate and typed it in and it identified the language as French, I thought it was and it translated it to.....Que Sera Sera. What gives?

Carol said...

What I found on Wiki:

"There has been some minor controversy about the reputed language in the song's title and lyrics. The phrase was lyricist Jay Livingston's own variation on "Che sera sera", a fictional motto which he had seen in the 1954 film The Barefoot Contessa.[4][5] Although it seems Livingston didn't know it, Che sera sera is the heraldic motto of the Dukes of Bedford.[6]

The phrase also appears as "Che sera, sera / What will be, shall be" in the sixteenth century English play Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe (Act 1, scene 1). In any case, the phrase "Que será, será" seems to transmit a fatalistic conception on the future: "what has to happen, will happen".

(Authentic versions of the phrase "whatever will be" in the romance languages include el que serà [Catalan], lo que será [Spanish], o que será [Portuguese], ce qui sera [French], and quel che sarà [Italian]. In Spanish, the phrase is written "Qué será será.")"

Carol said...

Where are you Jan? Is everything OK?

Carol said...

Another example of the Que Sera Sera is represented by what happened to Dave Johnston, the volcanologist I was writing about last night.

"On May 17, 1980, Glicken took a day off to attend a college placement interview in California. Johnston filled in. Mount St. Helens exploded the next day at 8:32 a.m. Johnston was the first to report the eruption, radioing "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it."

He was killed moments later by a gigantic lateral blast of rock, heat and gas. His body was never found. Glicken's luck lasted 11 more years. In 1991, he was one of 43 scientists and journalists to be killed when Mount Unzen in Japan erupted."

A life in science sometimes becomes a death, too

Carol said...

And Ivy and I were discussing our respect for books and all the knowledge they contain. Today would be a good day to have a moment of silence and respect for those who did give their lives, maybe not voluntarily, to expand our knowledge of science.

"I know Chloe doesn't like to think that we all may have some destiny that is out of our hands or control "

That's not really what I think Carol. I think our choices are what really matter, but I don't think we are able to control everything. I just think we need to take responsibility for our choices and decisions - to not consider ourselves 'victims' or absent of free will.

Most especially I realize that we have no control of the circumstances we are born into. We then are sorta living out the karma that our parents are (and have) created and continue to create. You have to believe that we are creating our own karama (right?) But it's important we know we can change that karma, once we're making our own decisions.

What I believe doesn't have anything to do with controlling the world, it has to do with .......
OK I'll stop. You know more or less what I believe, but it's just that I always hear a lot of misinterpretation of what I believe, when someone tries to capsulate what I say. I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that we are responsible for 'creating' our world. That's not to say we are in control of circumstances - just in control of our reaction to them, and what we do with them. We're constantly judging things, and it's important what we do with that judgment. It's important we take responsibility for whatever is happening in our life. I can't possibly put it all into words.

However, I hope you don't take this as a complaint, it's not. I really like your post, and think it's important for us to think about. Que Sera Sera to me, means to accept the world as it is, and that you can face whatever comes next. It means 'tomorrow is another day' and all those other things.

Anonymous said...

... it means 'this too shall pass', the best is yet to come, and 'what a beautiful world'.
What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)

Carol said...

I didn't mean it as a criticism Chloe nor did I take your response as one. We all do have our control issues, especially me. It's hard for me to accept that we can't totally control outcomes. Right now I'm trying to come up with being comfortable letting Maggie have her teeth cleaned. I think there are enough signs that I must let it happen, don't ya think?

Carol said...

Chloe, I may have put your name on that thought but I don't think there is one of us here, or maybe anywhere, who wants to think that our destiny may be out of our control.

Carol said...

And what may be even harder to deal with is that you mammas and pappas can't control the destiny of your offsprings. You can teach them the best you can, try to be good role models, give them the shirts off your backs but then you gotta let them fly on their own.

Coreen said...

Guys, how about the use of the word 'influence'
an outcome.

Again I believe efforts to influence what happens in our immediate circle (family/friends etc) is probably the most any of us can do at any particular moment. At times we may succeed & at others maybe we aren't so successful, but the efforts taken to do so are always positive.

Carol, as far as your decision to have dental
work for Maggie, I believe it is the proper choice and your apprehension and anxiety is a
natural response to making that decision.

There are a few people that I have helped to even cure what they were sick of...imbalances of body chemicals are usually the problem...mine was a large lack of Iron.....and a cpl of others....the last time that I went to the va doc..she said that I had great ballance of body chemicals...asked her for a copy of the test....and confirmed..and saw where i can improve..on the link that u made the name of Jay Kordich was used....I have his book "the Juicemans power of juicing".....so if u want to cure what ails U juicing is the way to go.....just saying...the blending is almost just as good....but even too much natural sugar is not very good for us.....all of the sugar that we need for the day...can be supplied by one bananna...any more sugar for that day...is too much....

When U blend one apple, 5 carrots, and a slice of beet...every day...u can't help but get healthy...if it is too much trouble....then don't do it.....the doctors can do it for u..after u get sick....and when I say u...I mean all of us....later... going to see if i can find a tool at the flea market.....

OK Solar, real time experiment here. I cleaned and put together my cheap Wally World GE juicer that I think I got a tremendous deal on. That part didn't take long. Finding my cheaters took the longest. They were under the dish towel.

I pealed and removed the seeds from one apple, I rinsed and add two nice handfuls of little baby peeled carrots, a couple of handfuls of rinsed spinach, and a half a cup or so of the frozen blueberries. I turned it on and it sounded like a plane was fixing to take off. No problemo there. I did the apple, carrots and blueberries, since the blueberries were frozen, on the crisp setting and the spinach on the soft setting. That didn't take long. I got one cup of liquid and poured it over two ice cubes.

What does it taste like? It taste like apple, carrot, spinach, blueberry juice. What does it look like? Liquid shit in a glass.

I'll let you know in a couple of hours what I feel like and how easy it is to clean up.

"I think there are enough signs that I must let it happen, don't ya think?"

Definitely yes (!) on Maggie's teeth. She'll be fine, you'll make it through the day (I always do when I have one go in for neutering or spaying - but it's never easy). She'll be fine Carol. You know, they have a little test they can do (before putting them under) to make sure they're going to be fine with the anesthesia - at least that's what the last vet told me).

I knew you weren't criticizing me. I just felt the need to clarify. I'm really in the mood to talk today, but we're just about ready to take off. Hopefully you guys will still be around when I get back, and am looking forward to reading all the comments then.

(Solar - thanks for the juicing info. - hope you're around later too.)

Clean up was fairly easy and two other advantages are that I know exactly what is in my juice and I made an effort to eliminate any pesticide residue from my fruits and veggies.

Later, I'm going to see if my ducks will eat the pulp.

Carol said...

Ducks don't eat the pulp. Now the ants probably will.

Carol,

U need to use those cheaters....look at what I posted....do not peel anything; since most of the nutrients are in the peels....just take out the seeds, and put them in..same goes for carrots...once again the healthy drink ingrediants....are:

first put in an apple not peeled....put in a slice of beet,,then 5 large carrots, not peeled, this looks like a cherry drink...put it over crushed ice..and it tastes like a fruit drink cos of the apple...one of the healthiest drinks....I sometimes add a hand full of spinach...or kale, or some energy green...it goes in first...then the soft apple, then the beet, that contains iron...then the carrots......

Carol said...

Sorry Solar, I'm pealing the pesticides and fungicides off. If they were organic veggie or fruits I wouldn't.

Solar said...

Try making a cake or cupcakes with the pulp....drink the juices right after u make them..don't wait..use the pulp for your garden,....lots of things to do with it...but if you clean it off right away...it won't stick...that only makes it a little more to clean...do it.!!

Solar said...

No such thing as pure organic foods...what ever is in the soil is spread out on all of the earth...organic foods are better..but where do U think the cows get their nutrients..not organic, and the meat that we eat? t hat is questionable no...I wash everything real good..have been for years...and no problems aghhhhhhh wait I can't breath.......what happened to que sera sera???

Solar said...

An apple or pear is about the only thing that I use to combine with veggies.....berries, and all other fruits should not be used.

that is where the blended comes in...a great tasting smoothie is much better as a snack, or when you want some ice cream.....

Carol said...

The Daily Green lists the top foods you should buy organic, if you are lucky enough to have it available.

The Dirty Dozen

They also list the foods you don't have to buy organic:

Foods you don't have to buy organic

When I juice watermelon, cantalope, etc..I cut them up and juice it all...when I eat fish..2 times per wk...i find it hard to watch how much mercury or other chemicals are in them...I don't know for sure..but If im in good shape..i can eat, drink some things that are not , or do have some chemicals in them...I don't think that we get the truth about the organic foods either..will take a look at what scientist has to say about it

".a great tasting smoothie is much better as a snack, or when you want some ice cream...."

What does a healthy fruit smoothie with 'all' healthy ingredients, have to do with ice cream?

I don't make my fruit shake for a snack. I make it because it's all nutrients, and fiber is an important part of any diet. That blended fruit shake I make every day is my life's blood, not a snack. It's a 'whole' fruit, the way nature planned it.

Sometimes you just have to use good old common sense. Carol probably knows better than any of us about the ill effects of pesticides (which is probably a slow process, but takes it's toll over the years)- and they probably affect some people more than others. I'm definitely going to take it into consideration when I feed Emma.

Carol, let me know how that pulp cupcake comes out.

I went to Dr. Weil's site to see what he thought about juicing. This is what he wrote?

Dr. Weil on Juicing

Carol said...

Kind of sounds like Dr. Weil might go with what you're doing Chloe. With little ones Chloe, I'd be real careful what fruits and veggies I would allow with their skins on.

I'm not sure that when you buy organic it is really organic. It seems it would be difficult to grow without using pesticides. I do, but I have a limited crop size and variety. If the bugs get my crop, they get it. I also have a pretty good system of checks and balances. By that, I mean that some of my other camp friends feed on some of the pests, ie the birds and anoles eat some of the pests. Pesticides screw up that balance.

I've personally witnessed some of the farmer's attitudes on using chemicals. They have to have them to make a decent crop and even with a decent crop they aren't making enough to make it worthwhile to put out the amount of effort they do.

Farmers wouldn't make it without those crop subsidy payments. They don't get to set the crop price. The middle man does and they are the one's who make the profit on our food. The family farmer is the true missionary and one day, I fear, we won't have any left. The young ones in the family find that they can make more money doing other jobs. Also, maybe Solar can attest to this, they are some of the hardest and most reliable workers you can find. They know how to do many different things.

Solar said...

I was just trying to say that for the taste of ice cream or a smoothie, with different fruit...that it might taste better than juicing....it does have almost the same amount of healthy factors as juicing.!!

Carol, I have read in science mags, about the false claims that organic foods have..and that they are not totally without pesticides, etc...but much better than other corps farmers.....

"Sometimes you just have to use good old common sense"

Our senses are always not what we think that they are....science can and do give reasons for things that we think that we know...I just like to read what they have to say...compare and then decide....I always thought that we had 5 senses until i read in that we don't....

Carol,

I agree with this Dr. W. guy...but will repeat once again...I don't juice fruits...just an apple or a pear.

Here is an example of what juicing can do....that blending a bunch of fruit can't.!

For Tendinitis..one can do the following:

juicing containing cucumber, bell pepper, or other veggies high in silicon can reduce painful swelling.

One more:

Green power in juicing can help muscle cramping, it also strengths them...which reduces the chance of cramping them......I don't juice for the fiber...i get fiber in many other ways....including the swamp...and sometimes get cramps here also....

Carol, I haven't been to Dr. Weil's site for a long time, and it's so informative - I'm going to bookmark it. I ran across this, which has healthy ideas for breakfast (and even a couple of delicious sounding smoothies for me to try). What's for Breakfast?

Thanks.

When I do juice fruits...they are motley cantaloupes...this is scientifically proven to be the most nutritious fruit that there is.! When u use the rind and all....it high in vitamin A, and lots more......watermelon is second.

Ok that is enough..but t here are many more advantages in juicing than in any other way....

Thanks Solar, I enjoyed my cocktail today and felt healthier all day just because I drank it. At least I know exactly what was in it, pure good.

A zippy spring tonic to get U going after a long winter....

2 ( 1-inch-thick) pineapple rounds..preferably organic, 3 radishes, handful of dandelion greens. if the pineapple is not organic, remove the skin, cut the rounds.

Jan, I wish you would check in and let us know that everything is OK with you guys.

Hi Carol, I emailed Jan (yesterday) to see if everything is alright, but haven't heard back yet. She probably just needs a little break - but I miss her too.

Hope Maggie's gum swelling has gone down - be sure to let us know before you take her in. (I can't remember what day you scheduled for her cleaning)

.. and Mary, hope you check in pretty soon. I know you're fine though, or Carol would have said something. I'm sure it's going to take you a while to get used to your new shift.

Well, I'm going to dig into some home projects - and desperately need to do some spring cleaning, so I guess I'll get to it.
