Brain Washing Effect

Weasel words are phrases that are evasive, ambiguous or misleading
Weasel words

" Propaganda must always be essentially simple and repetitious. "

"The term mind control, also referred to as “brainwashing,” “coercive persuasion,” “thought reform,” and the “systematic manipulation of psychological and social influence”, refers to "a process in which a group or individual systematically uses unethically manipulative methods to persuade others to conform to the wishes of the manipulator(s), often to the detriment of the person being manipulated ....... broad ranges of psychological tactics seen as subverting individuals' sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions, or decision making." Politicians, Media, Advertising - you name it, someone's always trying to sell us something.

Sometimes it's just people wanting to belong, and to do that, they'll agree with anything. Can't really hold that against them (at least I don't), but it's hard to believe anyone would 'choose' to live their life like that.

In my opinion, the most important thing in the world to remember is that we 'always' have choices, and to deny that is to refuse to take responsibility for our own life.

Carol, you will appreciate this. There is a Doc here at the School of Medicine, Univ of NM who has lost his medical license and been suspended from his duties at the SOM and univ Hosp. (He had a VP position). He is a single guy who was involved with a female psychiatrist (also a faculty in SOM). It seems he prescribed some anti depressants and anti anxiety meds for her during their relationship. The deal is that someone with prescriptive privaleges is barred from prescribing for family or someone with whom they are involved in an intimate relationship. Apparently, the woman filed a suit against him. It sounds like a romantic relationship gone bad. In a way I feel sorry for the guy. But he should have known better.

I had posted this comment at the end of the last post - not realizing there was a new post. So you are going to see it twice if you go back. I do that a lot - go back and read old comments on previous posts and forget and comment there - and of course - everyone else has moved on - and I am left behind - the story of my life (at times).

Mary, You have really had some serious surgery. Do you have problems going through security at airports? Do you take something to build your bones up?

Chloe, interesting post. Reminds me of the credit card companies and the small print that it has been determined by experts that no one can understand. John says the credit card companies have people "by the balls" You have to have one in order to rent a car, get a motel room, etc. but many people use them for everyday things and get into trouble.

jan said...

Jargon used by businesses, medicine, law, & the Government is made up essentially of "weasel words" if I am understanding the post.

"Jargon used by businesses, medicine, law, & the Government is made up essentially of "weasel words""

Jan, i agree. And that's just to name a few. And I comprehend 'weasel words' in the same way you do. Have you ever seen a politician that wasn't evasive, ambiguous or misleading? But not just politicians. Many who want to sell you something is the same way.

The only reason I started thinking about it (aside from our last post almost reaching it's comment limit) is because of Carol's pod post, and her mentioning the systematic brain washing of our population. She's right.

What you said about credit cards is so true also. The best thing that's happened in a long time though, are the bank account debit cards. You can use them like a credit card now, to rent cars and rooms, etc.

Carol, Can't you complain about having to care for your 400lb quadriplegic, with your limited resources (after all, you said yourself that you're just a clinic - seems to me he should be wardens responsibility)? Can you insist that he be sent over to the hospital?

(ha! I realize he was the wardens responsibility, and he passed that responsibility onto you)

Mary, Why did you have to have all that work done on your neck and back? Did you have an accident, or was it from normal wear and tear?

I can't even imagine the pain you must have gone through. Neck and back problems can be a huge annoyance. My back's never bothered me, but my neck sure has. But I can't complain, because it's no more than a discomfort (so far).

Oooh, Mary. I just remembered your family is arriving today. I hope you all have a nice visit and a great time today. Can't wait to see if you're going to have a granddaughter or a grandson. (I assume they already know it's not twins - but, after all, twins to run in your family. :)

jan said...

Mary, I too want to add my best wishes on your visit with you son and DIL. Keep us posted on your soon to be grandbaby. Have a wonderful visit with them. Are you taking off work?

Chloe, we have had some car rental places reject our bank debit/credit cards. I have a regular credit card as a stand by.

Ivy Green said...

Speaking of twins, I just have to share this story about my brothers last week. My sister-in-law and I were "listening in" on a telephone conversation between her husband (my brother) and his twin. It was being broadcast on speaker phone, so it was hard to not hear. Anyway, there was a lot of "dead air" on the phone...i.e., neither one saying anything, just keeping the phone line open. My sister-in-law says to me, "They do this every day...just get on the phone and not say anything."
We laughed, and then she yells out, "Hon, TALK to your brother!"
He replies, "I am."
She rolls her eyes and calls out into the speaker to the twin,"Do you understand what your brother is saying (i.e. "not saying")?"
There's a momentary pause before we hear him reply, "Yeah."

I 'spose you had to be there to see how amusing it was. I see evidence of the mind connection they have with one another...their own way of communicating that no one else transcends. I have seen them practicing it their whole lives (I'm the eldest). There's a beauty to it that's awesome. Don't we each yearn to be intuitively understood?

:)

jan said...

Ivy, delightful comment about your brothers and their communication. How true that we "yearn to be intuitively understood." Are they identical twins?

jan said...

Carol and Mary, do you have this kind of communication that Ivy's twin brothers have? I know you two are fraternal twins.

John and I definitely have (on some occasions) intuitive communication. There are times we are riding in the car and he will say something about someone or an event and I swear I have been thinking about that person or event. He says the same thing happens to him.

Ivy Green said...

Hey, Jan. Yes, my brothers are "mirror image identical twins." From one egg that split in two, and yet one is left-handed and the other is right-handed; one is introverted and the other is extroverted. Strange but true.

Ivy Green said...

My sister-in-law also has sisters who are identical twins. We are all waiting to see which of their four daughters are going to have twins. My great-grandfather on my fathers side was an identical twin, and great-aunts on my mother's side were identical twins. We have them all over the family tree on both sides.

Anonymous said...

"Don't we each yearn to be intuitively understood?"

Yes, Ivy! We do.
When I read your recollection of your twin brothers phone call, I thought how unusually close they must be. It is so cool that they can talk without saying much of anything. It must be the most wonderful feeling to be that close to each other.

.... and this: "Yes, my brothers are "mirror image identical twins."

Now that adds new meaning to the expression: You complete me. I just love it.

The L.A. Times does such a good job telling these little stories. It's what I've always liked best about the paper - it can be so personable:

A love story turned mystery
"After 60 years apart, a couple reunite and wed. But their time together is suddenly, inexplicably, cut short." Mystery

.... I already have my theory.

... and this is just plain sad, and reminds me why I hate having our soldiers in these countries. It's sad that children are so often involved in the horrible things that go on over there.

Pakistan – " A roadside bomb killed three U.S. soldiers and partly destroyed a girls' school in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday in an attack that drew attention to a little-publicized American military training mission in the al-Qaida and Taliban heartland.

They were the first known U.S. military fatalities in Pakistan's lawless tribal regions near the Afghan border and a major victory for militants who have been hit hard by a surge of U.S. missile strikes and a major Pakistani army offensive.

The blast also killed three schoolgirls and a Pakistani soldier who was traveling with the Americans. Two more U.S. soldiers were wounded, along with more than 70 other people, mostly students at the school, officials said." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100203/ap_on_re_as/as_pakistan

Yep, gotta be careful, because when you least expect it, someone has slipped in the backdoor of your brain. The right has been very effective with their programming by repeating the same phases over and over and using words that are powerful like DEATH panels and DEATH taxes and WAR on TERROR, etc. The use of these words is no accident, IMO.

I know some of you don't like these comedy news programs but they really help to point out how crazy it all is, in a humorous way. Even after seeing and hearing things in the MSM, I've had more ah ha moments watching Colbert and Stewart.

jan said...

Chloe, interesting LA Times story about the couple reunited. what is your theory. His daughters stood to benefit.

How very sad about the US servicemen and school girls. The book, 3 Cups of Tea is about the man (Greg Morrison) who is building schools for girls in Pakistant.

jan said...

Ivy, so many identical twins in your family. How delightful. That is so interesting about your brothers- that they are mirror images of each other and one is left handed and the other right handed.

jan said...

I love reading research studies involving identical twins. When raised apart, it turns out they often buy the same brand of car and have the same occupation/profession as well as other similarities. Researchers and movie/TV love identical twins. A student in one of my courses has identical twin boys and they have been in several movies here.

Here's something that may be of interest to some of you.

I confess to know virtually nothing about science, medical procedures, et al, but thought this book may be of some interest to those of you in the medical profession.

A review of this book in today's NYT,
'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' by Rebecca Skloot

"Bought & sold & shipped around the world for decades, HeLa cells are famous to science students everywhere. But little has been known, until now, about the unwitting donor of these cells."

Carol said...

Jan, getting "left behind" is what we call "snipe hunting" on a blog. We talked about that before in earlier posts.

And no, it's not the same with fraternal twins as it is with identical twins. Fraternal twins are just two siblings who happen to have shared a womb and were born at the same time. They have the same personality differences as any other regular siblings have.

That was a happy and sad story about the couple who found each other after all those years Chloe. I wonder if they are still investigating. I know who I'd be looking at but we don't have all the facts.

Good news, our big boy, got into court today, pleaded quilty, was sentenced and was whipped away to a state facility that had a hospital. Never seen anything like that kind of speed in the judicial system, ever! And that was fortunate for everyone involved. And, the Warden was no happier about the arrangement than we were. It was just the last straw. Often people charged with crimes use their serious health problems to avoid prosecution. His luck had run out.

Also, you can't keep a prisoner in the hospital unless the prisoner meets the criteria for hospitalization and even with everything he had going on, and you don't know the half of it, he didn't meet that critera. It helped that the security staff had to be involved in his care. We needed their muscle. When the securtiy staff is put out, things move much faster.

Carol said...

I love the commercials Coreen and usually that is the only reason I will watch the Super Bowl. But not this year!

Sheriff declared Friday, All Saints Day and the non-security staff can wear our Saint's garb to work.

And Coreen, what might have encouraged big boy to plead quilty today is that I reminded him yesterday he wouldn't be able to watch the Super Bowl Sunday where he was at. He probably will be able to where he is going.

Coreen said...

Carol, Just glad that 'big weight' was lifted from your shoulders.

While I'm thinking about it. Isn't there a difference between a 'jail' & 'prison, for some
reason, I remember there is, but not sure what
the difference is.

Always like the Clydesdale ads, I think it was
last year's super bowl with the Clydesdale, the dalmation & the Rocky theme, I really liked that one....

As far as Chloe's mystery, they need to call in a CSI team, maybe all 3---Miami, NY, Vegas & if they find a body...Bones can take over...

If you wear your Saint's colors, take a pic to
put up on a superbowl post, if you want one....If I had some Saints' colors, I'd put them on in your honor.....

Seems New York has a do-nothing approach to vicious dogs. Heart-wrenching and outraging for all dogs lovers.

Chloe,
I think the problems with my back and neck were due to an accumulation of things--normal wear and tear, serious accidents and working as a nurse having to lift on heavy patients. None of those things may have been bad if it weren't for the severe osteoporosis.

Yes, I'm very excited about the kids coming in. They're flying into Houston and driving here so they probably won't get here until about 10:30 or 11:00 tonight. Jan, Regarding that L.A. Times story, I think the family was involved. Greed is so unbelievably ugly, and I hope I'm wrong. The story of his son-in-law being there earlier just feels all wrong. Those HomeDepot receipts he had mean nothing to me, since that could be part of a planned alibi. I just have to believe it's the family, because, like you said, they had the most to lose. If it was them, I sure hope they are caught.

It's so disgusting what some people will do for money.

Mary, Even if your son and daughter-in-law can't stay long, it sounds like you've planned it so well, that you all will have plenty of time to catch up on things, and discuss the future. Important things, about them becoming first time parents and you becoming a grandma. That baby will be here before you know it Mary, so keep that plane ticket your son gave you handy.

The ultrasound is going to be such a great experience for all of you, and the surprise party you've arranged will give you all a good chance to celebrate. Birth's have a wonderful way of bonding a family, and this visit will give you all a chance to make plans. Enjoy!

She was probably so happy to see that I didn't have that, who can I kill, look in my eyes yesterday. I was too beaten down, after the rest of the day, to give it to her.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
Thank you for those compliments and for appreciating my meager contributions. I am content to be an aspiring writer. lol

The earliest copyright on "The Art of Selfishness" is 1937. Were Seabury's ideas ahead of their time?
Dale Carngie's book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" was first published in 1936. It's still going strong. "One of the core ideas in his books is that it is possible to change other people's behavior by changing one's reaction to them" (Wiki).
It seems that era was the dawn of the self-help genre. Is that a form of brain-washing? What issues were people grappling with in those days that made these books best-sellers?

Mary said...

And speaking of cold weather, where is the Solar man?? Has he checked in??

I find that some of the best manipulation comes from people who don't realize they are doing it. Those really nice people or passive aggressives. Hard to fight against it.

When I try to manipulate I'm too obvious and not very effective.

Carol said...

Coreen, I didn't comment on the article you linked on depression and Internet use, because I needed some time for careful reading and pondering. It is something I have pondered before.

Like they pointed out, any addiction is a symptom of some mental distress whether it is to food, sex, shopping, gambling or Internet use.

My use of the Internet is both healthy and unhealthy. The healthy aspect is I can spend time with people who want to discuss some of the things I like to discuss. My environment is limited and it does not provide many opportunities to discuss and debate some of the issues I like to discuss and debate. I'd hope that if I had more opportunity to do that with people I can see and feel, I'd choose that option.

What has been pointed out here this week, by Solar, is that we are often more comfortable speaking our mind on blogs than we are in a face to face conversation. If we are rejected on the Net it may hurt but there is always the option of finding some other group to torment with our opinions. And we can't see it when someone is rolling their eyes at us even though I often can feel it. Yes, I know when you are irritated with me.

As for my unhealthy use, I do use the Internet to avoid activities that I need to do and don't want to do. That's definitely not a good thing.

Carol said...

I am very worried this morning even though worry is not a healthy thing to do. Mary called early this morning, just before her son was due to arrive. She fell down trying to do some last minute cleaning. She said she thinks she tore her body from one end to the other. This is not an uncommon occurance.

She was conscious, could move all her extremities, wasn't bleeding, nothing was poking thru her skin, she didn't want an ambulance, her son was arriving soon so I didn't rush over to check on her. Her son did know what had happened.

I didn't get any calls so I hope that was a good sign. I still think that it will definitely ruin the visit but I pray I am wrong.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
There's a little information I found on the net about the book you cited, "Man the Manipulator" by Everette Shostak.

A reader's review of the book "Man the Manipulator" on Amazon: "Shostrom identifies eight basic manipulator types, along with their "actualizor" counterparts. He notes that we all are part "manipulator", part "actualizor". It pays to know what type of manipulator you're dealing with, and at times, to carry out some manipulation yourself. For techniques of manipulation, I suggest Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People", Robert Greene's "48 Laws of Power" and, of course, the "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli. Or become an "actualizor". Part 3 of the book explains typical manipulation patterns between lovers, parents and their children and teenagers, and teachers and students."

Carol, I've heard the both "The Prince" and "The 48 Laws of Power" have become newly popular among prison gangs.

Mary, I'm so sorry you had that accident. Won't rest easy until we hear from you, that you're doing alright.

It's interesting that those two books (including: 'How to Win Friends and Influence People') were written in the depression decade Ivy - a time of need.

I like the way Wiki summarized Dale Carnegie's concept : "One of the core ideas in his books is that it is possible to change other people's behavior by changing one's reaction to them". Thanks for quoting and linking that.

I actually think the self-help genre began way back when Emerson and Thoreau were writing. I've always loved reading books by people who were willing to share their inner most thoughts and feelings with us. I guess any exceptional writer, in order to be be successful, must do that - whether it's fiction or non fiction.

"Positive self-talk or brainwashing?"

I sure don't call sharing one's ideas to improve others lives as brain washing. Brain washing is a means to an end - something done by someone that wants something you have. Don't know how you can compare the two.

The way you describe 'manipulation' sounds different than the way I'd describe it Carol. You have to take into consideration 'intent'. The same goes for 'control'. Who doesn't want to control their own life. That's part of taking responsibility and being willing to be held accountable.

I would never confuse kindness with manipulation and brainwashing. There are many forms of manipulation, and often saying nothing is one of them.

Anonymous said...

... oops, forgot to respond. Maybe I should say you took care of your 400 lb problem, but instead said you took care 'of' him until the solution from the courts came through.

I was referring the the way you tended to all the details that were necessary to have someone there for him 24/7. Your plans allowed him to get what he needed, until the problem was solved. (I often leave out the details of what I'm 'trying' to say).

Anonymous said...

.. and in that way, you solved the problem.

Anonymous said...

Ha... and manipulated the situation. Who say's manipulation isn't a 'good' thing? :)

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
You're right. I compared the two just to explore the differences. One is benevolent, and the other is malignant. A comparison applies loosely in the sense that both can be forms of indoctrination with the objective of changing a pattern of thought or perspective.

In the process of breaking free, the addict must develop positive self-talk to counter these adverse effects. They must learn to disbelieve the pervasive brainwashing of our "popular" culture and reprogram their thinking. That's why their slogans and affirmations, and the closedness of their communities are so important to their recovery.

Im glad that U are OK.!!! and that U let us know. Make sure that U are not going to play the perfect host, and do all the running around.!!

Chloe,

"it is possible to change other people's behavior by changing one's reaction to them".

I don't like self-help books at all.! They mostly have what I think would be common sense.!

When I want to change someones behavior toward me....that is after I have felt used, or taken for granted, is to treat them exactly as they treat me.....if ignored, I ignore, if rude, im rude, sooner or later they will ask if there is something wrong with me..that im not the same with them....and it gets out in the open, and resolved..all relationships are egaltarian in nature, until one or the other breaks the rule....and are not being fair.....the ancient people that dependend on each other did not have a self-help book to guide them...what was fair, was excepted, or you were driven off the tribe.....Now if I would have been there with "The Rule Book-The Book Of Winkle" they would have followed it.....hey.! Don't look at me like that; I didn't write the book......

Solar said...

Sorry, that was about manipulations, mostly.

Ivy Green said...

Solar,
Another theory says treat them the way you want to be treated, no matter how they treated you. I think it would okay to take it a step further and tell them upfront you are not going to treat them the way they just treated you. Maybe that would clear the air quicker. Whaddyathink?

Solar said...

Ivy,

Yes I do AGREE with that 110% I always treat someone as I should be treated...that is the rule of nature to me...if you give the plant water, it will provide you with something to eat....this the first rule of the Hunter gathers had imo..they had to have had great relationships when they went out on the hunt together..

When this golden rule was broken, it was when we had something to store away from the others....when we started to think and act solely for our own interest..is when it all started down hill.... The start of farming did this imo....
But yes this is the first rule that we should all apply.....thanks Muchachita.!!

Solar said...

Ivy,

I forgot. Before I go into my treat them as they treat me...I alway's make a plea, a request for fairness, but that is also a warning...once again u r wright on sister.!! U would be surprised how effective this is.

My son used to do this ignore thing with me sometimes...I told him about it...and he was ok for a while....he did not like it when I ignored him, and did not even acknowledged that he was in the room, when he talked to me..I just walked away. After a few day's he asked really, really sit down and talk about it...that was 10 years ago or so....we are great friends...

Solar said...

Ok, Im being ignored......i can take a hint...what is it with me, and Maria....we both need deodorant?? I washed last month...honest.!

Just missed a bullet. My heater was making so much noise that it could be heard from the garage. The filter was stuck and torn around the motor. I took my time, and cleaned it all up by pushing the belt by hand to get it to release most of it..had to take the motor off, and put it back on tho..wanted to make sure...now it smells a little like burned toast, but that should go away.

Ivy Green said...

Ignored?? Solar, how could we possibly ignore you? Never.

Solar, I'd say that is behavioral psychology that you're talking about there. You're trying to elicit the desired behavior (that you feel is respectful and appropriate). Is that manipulation? Like I said earlier, in my opinion, manipulation is not 'necessarily' a bad thing.

You have to use one heck of a lot of behavioral psychology (manipulation?) when you're raising kids - the four legged ones too.

Ivy, another great link. Thanks.
I brought back some more sentences to quote from it too:

"You didn’t come forth into this world to suffer, to be anxious, fearful, stressful, or depressed.

....... Be like that baby you once were in terms of being joyful. You don’t need a reason to be happy…your desire to be so is sufficient."

Excuse the long quote coming up, but I'm not sure the link will work for everyone, because you may need to be registered to read it:

Banks concede reform is inevitable
"Paul Volcker and Barack Obama have either thrown the world into chaos or given the cause of global bank regulation new impetus – it depends on your point of view. But one thing is for certain: the twin US initiatives to derisk banks and tax them according to their size – the Volcker rule and the Obama levy as they have been dubbed – have seized the attention of bankers and regulators around the world.

The US last month first made clear that it wanted to exact a levy of 0.15 per cent on any bank balance sheet over $50bn. Then it said that banks should no longer engage in what it felt were riskier practices – investing in hedge funds, private equity or proprietary trading, the archetypal casino-style betting of bank funds for a quick profit.

As part of that second crackdown, US officials said banks would not be able to grow beyond their current share of the market.

Underpinning both initiatives is a crackdown on institutions deemed “too big to fail” – an area regulators admit had not been settled via the international supervisory authorities, such as the Financial Stability Board and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, until the US political intervention.

There are at least four competing ideas under discussion among regulators, politicians and bankers. These include the extension of existing regulatory initiatives; the introduction of contingency capital planning; the rewriting of rules around different capital instruments, such as bank bonds; and a full-scale adoption at the level of the Group of 20 countries of a form of the Obama levy.

In the end, bankers and regulators agree a combination of at least some, if not all, of the ideas under discussion will probably be implemented in some form. And of those, a global levy is the one that appears to be gaining support fastest." Banks concede reform is inevitable

To me this is all just feinting right and going left..and a little late...The same people that are the trouble are expected to regulate themselves to the point of what? It's like the Health Debate, that wasn't about health...it was about who was making the laws that could be taken advantage off. If they were serious they would have had, Doctors, Nurses, Professors, and consulted with the ins industry, and politicians..and then developed a plan...not the other way around...the Bankers that steered us into this mess, is going to guide us out??

That last part is what Im afraid of...20 banks making the rules for the entire world.....

Carol, I have changed my reading habits. I don't care much for self-help books any longer and a lot of the psych books I used to read have lost their magic for me. I enjoy books by people about the cultures they live in, books about historical characters. I like good novels. I have started a new one by Barbara Kingsolver. She has been one of my favorite authors.

jan said...

Mary, I hope you are doing ok. Take care of yourself.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I can be superstitious, so please don't say "fatal fall." Not even a near-fatal fall. Mary took a bad fall, and thank goodness she's okay now. That's what we're hoping for...no lingering after effects. Do you think a trip to the doctor to get checked out is in order for her? Maybe you can check her out?

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I have never read a Kingsolver book, but they look so intriguing. What do you like about her? With Geraldine Brooks it's the poetry of her prose...it carries me away.

What did ya'll think of that news that Governor Sanford removed a promise to be faithful from his wedding vows? Even if some argue that expecting faithfulness in marriage is too idealist, I think that voiding that promise so early in the relationship would definitely make me think twice.

jan said...

Ivy, I like Kingsolver's writing style. I read one of her 1st books years ago - Pigs in Heaven - She had read a passage on NPR radio and I was intrigued by it - so bought the book. Then read several others she wrote. She never disappoints me. She takes a long time writing between books. The last one of hers I read was "The Poisonwood Bibles" It was much heavier than any of her earlier books, but was excellent. The book I am reading now is Lacuna. I am just starting it.

jan said...

Ivy, I am going to look for Geraldine Brooks' books. We are going to the bookstore very soon.

Carol, I am chuckling at your description of mary's mobility. I used to do that too - never watched where I was stepping - skipping up and down. I miss that. Now, I am cautious when walking. I had too many minor missteps for a while and was constantly twisting an ankle or breaking small bonew in my feet. When we are younger we don't realize how flexible we are until we are older and lose that flexibility.

I guess my sympathy or empathy lies with Mrs. Sanford. The worst part for her is having all this played out in the media.

Maybe it is suppose to be the thought for the day. What do you think?

Carol said...

At first I did feel sorry for Ms. Sanford but now I don't know. If she married a man who took faithfulness out of his marriage contract, what she did expect?

When you choose to be a politician or celebrity or the spouse of either, you don't have any privacy. That is pretty much a given. Now the children are another matter.

Another ponder. The media loves to fan the flames of partisanship. Instead of giving the parties an atta boy for coming together to work out their differences like in that recent meeting between Obama and the Republicans, they focus on who scored the most points. They cheer for one side or the other. That just encourages partisanship. The focus should have been on the fact that they were willing to come together and discuss the issues.

I do feel for the mid atlantic states, they are
just not prepared for such a tremendous amount of snow & how to manage it, but the good thing for them is that after the snow, the temperatures usually rise well above freezing so it melts away...unlike here when the temps stay below freezing for days & the snow stays where it was not plowed/shoveled away....

New face on an old problem for Scots. Though not the only ethnic group so affected, the alcohol-abuse gene is well entrenched in Anglo-Saxon DNA, and from it flow the associated social and medical problems. The lore in my ancestry is that the family lands were gambled away by the chief during an alcohol-fueled night of revelry. From there we became homeless, and from thence to America.

DISPATCHES FROM AMERICA
30-second warnings
By Robert Lipsyte

In 1987, an evangelical Christian missionary in the Philippines, Pam Tebow, sick, pregnant, and near term, ignored her doctors' advice to abort her fifth child. How could they know he would grow up to win a Heisman Trophy - the highest individual award in American college football - and lead the University of Florida to two national American football titles?

Twenty-three years later, before he even turned professional, Tim Tebow made himself the player to beat in Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV by starring in a 30-second commercial for Focus on the Family, a Christian group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. That the advertisement would run represented a reversal of CBS's long-time policy against advocacy ads. At this late date, it is still not certain if Tim's creation myth will be included in the

commercial, or even if the ad will be aired at all.

Whatever happens, the controversy put the game's spotlight back where it belongs - on the advertising.

Maurepas student sent home from school for wearing Indianapolis Colts jersey

Perhaps the principal thought the dear child might be endangered on the school yard.

Maybe he's a smart man. Think of how bad 'Student beaten for wearing Colt's t-shirt' looks as a headline."

They could have made the kid turn the shirt inside out...or put a sweater on over it...many other options besides banishment...

Even though that principal was a moron, I don't think the other students would have beat him up over the jersey Ivy. There were many reports of how well the other team fans were treated in New Orleans during the championship game. One article saying that the other team's fans said, they never had so much fun losing. But then, those kids at that school aren't old enough to drink yet, are they?

Ivy, Kingsolver has 2 early books in which one is a sequel to the other - I think it is Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven. Both are good. I think I read PIH first and did not realize there was one that preceded it.

I loved "The Poisonwood Bibles" It was excellent. It came later.

Hi Coreen, When did you finish the baby's afgan (is it afgan or afghan)? You didn't post a picture of it.

I work on the quilts at night while watching TV or sitting with John while he watches TV. I read before I go to sleep. Reading quiets my mind.

Solar, intresting info about Tim Tebow. I heard about the TV ad and the controversy. I did not hear who it was about.

Carol,
There's no reason at all then to have sent the Colts Kid home from school...

Ivy, It is hard to believe that 15 y/o boys could join the service in Britain during the 2nd WW.

Jan,
"Poisonwood Bibles" has been her bestest-seller, right?

jan said...

Ivy, yes it has. I read it several years ago, but it is not easily forgotten. It is not a religious book. It is about a family - the father is a missionary with a wife and 4 daughters. He takes them to Africa and the story is told from the perspectives of the wife and daughters.

The principal is a poor sport.

Went to our favorite NM restaurant tonight. Took our 8 y/o GD. She really likes the hot stuff. She had a bean burrito with red sauce and she wolfed down the whole thing. She is a little thing. I had a cheese enchilada that I didn't eat and she ate it too.

I went back and re-read more carefully the Times-Picayune story, noting that the students were allowed to "trade their school uniforms for Saints jerseys and T-shirts." In other words, if you're not wearing your Saints jersey, you have to wear your regular uniform. How could I, the old human resources policy-enforcer, have missed that distinction?

Since we're getting close to 200 comments, I put up a very temporary post to hold us over 'til morning, or whenever Coreen has her Super Bowl post ready to go.

Thanks for the heads up, Chloe. I almost posted a lengthy comment here, but I will cut and paste it to the new thread.
