Gone fishing.....

I thought before I go I needed to maybe explain some of the code language we are using here. You know, like "snipe hunting." We don't want our new peeps here to be confused......like we may seem to be at times.

I don't know if a snipe is a real bird, you'll have to ask Ivy but if you were lucky, when you were a kid, you might have gotten the opportunity to do a little snipe hunting. It's more likely if you were in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts or Camp Fire girls or some other organization that gave your parents the option of getting rid of you for a little time in the summer. Maybe you just had a nice relative that would take you off for a while.

I was in Camp Fire girls. And we did some snipe hunting and I got the privilege of getting to be the lead hunter. Now this is how it goes. Ya wait until dark. You get a big brown paper bag, put some pickle relish in the bottom of the bag. The lead hunter gets to hold the bag, in the middle of the dark woods, all alone, while all the others circle the area banging sticks together. The purpose is the scare the snipe into your pickle relish baited bag. Yeh, right!

Ya know at age 10, I wasn't born yesterday. The entire thing sounded screwy to me, but what the heck, so did Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and a lot of the stuff I heard in church. There's a lot of stuff that kids are asked to believe that just doesn't make sense. No wonder we grow up not trusting anybody. And I don't trust very many.

Well, while holding that bag in the dark woods, it didn't take me long to notice that people were disappearing and heading somewhere else. I think I got back to camp before most of the rest of them did. You can't fool this idiot, at least not for too long.

And now for how snipe hunting applies to blogs. Well every now and then a blog puts up a "new thread", or "new post". Snipe hunting is when you are still gabbing, in the comment section, on one post and no one is gabbing back and you find out they all left to go to the next post and didn't tell you. You can just about hear them all laughing at you.

Well now off the finish loading up.

And feel free to share your crazy stories about how dumb you were back when. It might even be yesterday.

To make you feel at home here Jan, I remember when we were back in nursing school and you left that rectal thermometer in that unconscious patient and didn't remember until it was time to record vital signs. Never forget the look on your face.

So you won't feel too bad, I also remember the time I had to give an enema to that lady in labor, like we couldn't find another way to torture those poor women in labor. I was already pissed off that I was in a group of mostly male nursing students and my nursing instructor made me do all the enemas.

Distracted by my state of anger, I forgot to put the tubing with the clamp on it on the enema bucket. The next thing I knew, I was standing in ankle deep water in the bathroom. I was a nervous wreck trying to clean up a major flood with toilet paper before my instructor found the mess.

And. oh gosh Jan, remember the summer we spent at the mental institution. No, we weren't patients even though you wouldn't have known that by watching us. You know like...when in Rome.....

Those were the days that they actually had a place where people with severe mental disorders could go for housing and treatment. Now it's mostly jail. Things don't always get better with time.

Carol, MG, You already have me laughing today. I love those stories from your and Jans early nursing training days. Keep them coming!

I know you're out fishing today, but stopped by to leave a little note, hoping you have a very god day. I saw from your posts how much work it is, and had no idea. Have fun! And take good care of little Maggie.

ps I saw that cute little dog in front of the boat, in the picture you posted of Joey and his crew. He/she looked so brave, up there with his little paws the top of it, watching where they were going. That was my favorite part of that picture.

Oh, and I forgot to ask. Do you see the jail as being a lot like that mental institution you worked at? Or were you just saying that a few of them are crazy?

The spider web was completely dismantled and gone by sunrise. It's as if the spider herself just reeled the whole thing back in like a fishing line...!

Chloe,

Carol's in a better position to say, but imo, society decided it was "too cruel" to lock up innocent people with mental diseases. So we closed treatment facilities, and sent them back into the hands of their ill-equipped family, and eventually into the streets where many become truly anti-social and commit crimes. Then society could justify locking them up as criminals. Solves the funding problem too since health insurance doesn't have to pay for housing or treatment.

Darn, I will have to vacate the computer again. Even though it was debugged and deloused, and new virus software installed, I am again under attack. My 'puter guy said bring it back in...

I'm sure you're right Ivy.
Sorry to hear about your computer problems being back.

I hope you'll post your picture of that web, when you get your computer back. I'm asking Carol to explain to us again, exactly how to post.

The snipe is a real bird, a wading water bird, so Carol, you could possibly see one by your river. Maybe you've heard it splashing.

This tidbit is on Wiki: "The difficulties involved in hunting snipe gave rise to the term "sniper", referring to a skilled anti-personnel military sharpshooter. Colonial American snipe hunters used some of the earliest versions of a telescopic sight invented by American statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin."

Carol,

Try as I might, I couldn't get a sign-in using my existing info. So I guess I'll try signing up for the google-thing next. To date, I don't have any google accounts to my name (that I know of).

One thing that annoys me about this social networking phenomenon, is how they link you up to stuff you don't know you got linked to. This was written about in a comment posted this morning by Tiptoe on TM. Apparently, Facebook is a good one for that. I agree, and that may be a reason I've resisted forging ahead on this path. One step at a time is my motto, and slowly at that.

(posted surreptitiously from Command Central in the basement outpost, aka "The Man Cave.")

I must have forgotten about that thermometer. Carol, are you sure that was me? Funny how the mind blocks out scary or embarrassing things. Yes, I remember very well those experiences at Pineville. The memory that stands out the most there was when they would give electroshock therapy to the patients. It took a long time to get that picture out of my head. Jan
