We wanna go on vacation!

Our swamp turtle Jan left for vacation today but we insist that she take us with her. We'll call it a vaca-o-blog. So Jan, when you see or do anything interesting, please share it with the rest of us turtles who are left behind, sitting on the log. Don't forget, one of my favorite things to do on vacation is to eat. If you have a particularly interesting meal, snag a pic. I'll have my fork and knife ready.

Have a great vacation!

We needed some room for our AI live blog tonight. And now you have an assignment Jan.

Coreen said...

I'm right there with you Carol...

Carol said...

Our traveling turtle is in the same time zone and we might miss live blogging with her.

Carol said...

I've been watching for a Weatherford star. That is the town, isn't it?

Carol said...

Three sweet hometown stories.

Carol said...

One little turtle sitting on a log....

Carol said...

Pretty much par for this season. I'm not surprised. Now Haley can go kick some ass.

Coreen said...

Oh Carol...time for some other kind of show...

Coreen said...

The vote tallying for these shows deserves to be explained in full...

Carol said...

Well, it will be nice to have my Wednesday and Thursday night back.

Carol said...

The last interesting singer goes down.

Carol said...

Coreen, those teeny boppers can vote so many ways that they can stack the decks. And they have nothing better to do than do that all night.

Carol said...

I did enjoy the season though. But now that all the interesting singers have gone down one by one, I have no more interest in it.

Carol said...

They ought to do a show with all the losers. I miss Pia and Casey and Jacob and James. I liked the variety.

Coreen said...

I guess...the glimpses of the hometown welcomes showed an awful lot of really young
girls...not even tweens...but little girls...

Coreen said...

Honestly the only one I thought had a really good voice was Pia...the rest were not particularly outstanding...

I guess this makes Scotty the odds on favorite to win...Lauren is just a cookiecutter version
of all the young women singers out there now...

Carol said...

And Coreen, the people who appreciate higher quality performances just don't vote. But it is probably those little girls who buy a good bit of the music also.

Carol said...

Jan, just texted me. She can't get on the Internet. She was also disappointed in the results. She'll try again tomorrow to get on.

Coreen said...

I don't know Carol...Jan is missing & its almost the day for the rapture thing!!!....

Carol said...

And in order to please the voting crowd they had to sing familiar, popular songs. Most of the really good contestants wouldn't do that and got bumped off. Now it's down to just country karaoke. Can get that at any dive around my parts.

Carol said...

She texted me. She's still here just not here, here.

Coreen said...

Well, I'm going to scout up a book to read & check in on the team...the yankees are leading
10 - 0 in the 5th against the O's...so it should be an easy night...

Last night was a tough one...they should have
closed it out in the 9th, but Mo gave up the tieing run...& then it took 15 innings to win it...

Carol said...

Coreen, this Rapture guy is basing his departure time on 7000 years from the great flood. Some expert was on the news and said that guy counted wrong. We may have a few more years. Well, at least until Dec 2012.

Carol said...

What time was that game over?

Coreen said...

Midnight....

Well there's going to be a bunch of unhappy people in a couple of days when they are still here....but guess any rationalization of oh, well...just missed it by a few, we get another
chance to beam up in a few...

Carol said...

Coreen, that Harold Camping, rapture guy, is 89. For him, he's likely to be beaming up at any time. He's just hoping for some company.

Carol said...

One thing that got me pondering about that rapture thing is, why would these people feel the need to spend so much money and time to tell the rest of us?? I figure we are either ready or we're not.

Actually it makes me wonder if some of those people could be crazy enough to do something so that they aren't wrong again. Not a good thought. And I think I heard that they were using this scare as a marketing scheme to get money for their religious movement.

Love the turtles picture Carol. Did you take that one yourself? It's a masterpiece.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned how much I like turtles. I've been known to slam on my breaks and hold up traffic (more than once) on the main road off our property while one is slowly crossing -- that or getting out of the car to help it across. The one's here were huge, but I haven't seen one for a good while. Maybe because we haven't had our usual amount of rain in so long.

Happy weekend everyone!

Carol said...

No Chloe, I had to borrow that pic. First of all, I was in a hurry to get up a new post because we were almost out of room. Second, I can't get those darn turtles to stay still long enough to get a pic.

We have lots of turtles on logs, I can even see some way across the river but they won't stay on the log when I get close enough to take a pic. Maybe if I took my kayak out, I could slip up on some. Maybe I could also fall into the water and sink my camera or I might slip up on a gator. Should I chance it??

Carol said...

Chloe, you aren't alone in avoiding turtles on the road. I've read that people will have wrecks trying to run over snakes or trying to avoid running over a turtle.

I think I told you that I was riding on the back of my dirt bike years ago when my boyfriend, not a rocket scientist, swerved hard to run over a snake. We were on a gravel road and rule one...don't swerve hard on a gravel road. He laid that bike down, I think right on top of that snake. I didn't stick around long enough to find out. I was up and hauling ass outta there. Needless to say, I never road behind that guy again.

Carol said...

I'm not sure if traveling turtle will be able to connect. She was having trouble getting on wifi last night. It was a text message. She said John could get on. Don't know the details.

Carol said...

Well, I pulled out a fat juicy fillet to grill and will make a big fancy salad. Probably chase that with some extra chocolate candy. Just in case.

Carol said...

But if nada, I have a mammogram, bone density and blood work I have to do on Monday.

Carol said...

If tomorrow is judgement day, I hope the judges aren't Jlo, Randy and Steven or Bruno, Len and Carrie Ann. We know none of them will be fair.

Carol said...

If we're still here at 6P tomorrow, I bet the twitosphere will be lite up. Or would that be tweetosphere.

Carol said...

But if we do go, it would be a great time for us to all meet up. You'll recognize me, I'll be the one waving da crawdad.

Carol said...

Whiskey Jack offered to take care of our fur family for 100 bucks if we leave. I told him I'd just leave my bank card, pin number with Maggie home cooked meal recipe here. He'd have to pick her up. Hopefully she'll be coming with me.

Carol said...

one tooth of da gator
one tail of da crawdad
a pinch of gumbo filet
a dash of swamp mud

This is not dinner, it's some swamp magic I'm mixing up for dem dang Yankees. They need something to break that curse!

Hi folks, well finally I am able to connect online again. Last night was frustrating. It was a holiday inn express where we always stay in Weatherford, but I could not get online. John did. I just got tired of trying and decided to give up. I had personal issues going on to. I could have gone down to the desk, but was just not in the mood.

jan said...

Now to go back and read what I have missed. I did miss talking to you guys last night.

jan said...

I feel warm all over knowing you guys were thinking of me. all those good thoughts probably helped us get through the day today. It rained on us all day today - most of the time, hard driving rain. Woke up at 3 am to thunder and lightning and driving rain. I wanted tea but did not have my little water pot and big cup, etc. Had left them in the car. I went out into the driving rain and got my little bag with all my tea-making stuff. So had a nice big cup of tea while listening to the rain in the dark. John woke up and kept me company. We watched a little TV and then bot went back to sleep for an early morning nap. We drove for about 9 hours today. We did make a stop over in Tulsa to say happy birthday to my sis and give her the bag I made for her. She loved the bag. She gave us some great home-made cookies to take for the rest of the trip. I had cookies for lunch. Probably not good for my blood sugar - but what the heck!

Carol said...

The turtle has landed. I did get a text from turtle Jan earlier this evening. She made it to Arkadelphia and she said the rained hard most of the way.

I just looked up where they are on Weather Underground and there are some nasty thunderstorms on top of them. I don't think she gets that kind of stuff back in her 'hood.

We could use a little of that stuff down here. The grass is crunchy. I'm praying for a little tonight.

Carol said...

I left to walk the Magster, came back and posted that comment and there you were Jan.

jan said...

I don't know if I will watch Idol next week or not. I do like both these kids but it does not matter to me which one wins. The other thing is they really don't sound any different from week to week no matter what they sing. I think they have both peaked in terms of their talent on this show.

jan said...

Graduation for GD is 10 am tomorrow and the her parents are having a party for her at her other grandparent's land. They have a small lake and a cabin where they have family get togethers. My DIL has lots of family here in Arkadelphia, AR - so probably lots of people there. Later that night John and I are taking the parents and 2 girls out to dinner. Sunday, John is going to see church in Little Rock. I am going to sleep in and then go for a long walk. Later I will go to Hot Springs with the kids and we will do a little shopping and maybe see a movie. Hot Springs is about 25 miles from here.

jan said...

Hi Carol, wish I could send you some of this rain. We never see rain like this in NM. I do miss it but I think I have had my fill for a year or so.

jan said...

There have been tornado watches in parts of OK and Kansas. We have had lots of storms on the trip so far, but fortunately not any tornado warnings or watches.

jan said...

I have not been watching the stuff about the threat of the "rapture" I don't know what time it is predicted. I remember when my mother went to the Assembly of God church. People then were always predicting the rapture then. I was always looking to the "east" as I remember people saying that was where it would happen.

Carol said...

Looks like you have some heavy rain sitting right on top of you.

Carol said...

So I can see it coming from my couch? My windows face east.

jan said...

John's daughter who lives in Herndon Virginia just posted a link to npr about what song people might pick for the end of the world or rapture. I will post the link here, but don't know how to make it where you can just click on it.
Your Song For The End Of The World

jan said...

Carol, yes - still raining here.

Interesting thing about churches. In the Episcopal church, the alter is supposed to be in the east because when Christ is supposed to come in the resurrection, he is to come in the east. (that is what John says).

jan said...

Chloe, have not seen a turtle cross a road in years. I don't think we have any in NM. Probably too dry for them.

In past few weeks have seen a bunny and a roadrunner in about the same places most mornings.

I remember my youngest son, Steve (the one who lives here in AR) loved turtles when he was a kid. He often found non poisonous snakes, lizards and turtles to bring home.

jan said...

Thanks Carol.

Carol said...

I posted that link for you Jan.

Carol said...

Haven't listened to it yet. Just got a call from the joint. Had a little crisis.

jan said...

Is everything ok?

Carol said...

Hope so. I may be up waiting to see.

Carol said...

I'm watching Leno to catch Haley one more time. The loser is always on the next night Leno show.

Carol said...

Haley must not be on tonight since Jay didn't mention her but Kirsty is on.

jan said...

power has gone off X2 tonight - last time for about 10 min. We are in an area for potential flash floods. I hope my GD can make it to her graduation ceremony tomorrow. they live in the country and have had trouble getting into town when there have been heavy rains here. Will see tomorrow.

guess I will sign off. Never can tell if will lose power again. Talk to you guys tomorrow.

jan said...

Hope your crisis is not too bad = or keeps you up too late Carol.

Carol said...

Nite Jan.

This was an interesting interview with Haley, our end AI favorite. She seems to be mature beyond her 20 years.

Haley Reinhart: Judges Tried to Push My Buttons on 'American Idol'

A Wall Street Journal article wrote: "In person, Haley owns the stage and has a stage presence that a) the others don’t and b) you just can’t feel on TV.

Carol said...

Just stepped out on my front deck to check the climate out there and saw a new little spider building her web. Remember PS, porch spider. She hung around on the porch, then from a tree over the wharf and back to the porch again. I had removed her from the porch because she weaved such a big web that I couldn't get around it to take the Magster out. She did end up returning to the porch again.

The last time I saw PS was when I had that realization that PS was really a space alien posing as a spider. Once I was on to her gig, she disappeared.

This spider is much smaller than PS was but she may grow. There's a lot of good eating out there.

I do think we underestimate the intelligence of some of these little critters. I have these carpenter bees that drill holes in the wood of my camp. I try to swat them with this electronic fly swatter I have. They are too smart for me.

If I'm sitting out there without my swatter, they fly around me and bug me but if I get that swatter, they stay well out of reach and that is before I've even attempted the first swing. They just know I have it.

Carol said...

Ya know, we've been conditioned to think that space aliens look like those things with round heads, round eyes and skinny necks but they might very well be disquised as porch spiders and carpenter bees. They,re here and keeping an eye on me.

And I don't kill spiders, if I can help it. Spiders are good. They catch and eat other bugs. And I seldom use any poison because when you do, you can kill all the rest of the ecosystem. Now I do stomp roaches and I will spray ants. I hate ants, especially those red ants.

Carol said...

You OK Coreen?

Anonymous said...

Your insects may be smart Carol, but mine are just persistent. I'd never be able to scare them off with a fly swatter. Most of my bites are usually around my ankles, down where I can't see them settling in (ha... maybe they 'are' smart).

I have a dislike of many insects -- ants (like you), roaches (which I do stomp, but have to do it quickly before thinking about it, because I dislike stepping on something that big and squishy and it freaks me out that they know when you walk into a room. It makes them seem more like a small rodent or something which is normally more aware than an insect. I prefer insects stay outside (OF COURSE). My favorite is the butterfly. We've been blessed with lots of them this year -- especially now, since they love it when the tree's are flowering (again... of course). We have a large amount of big, beautiful black and turquoise ones (more black than blue) this year, that I've never seen here before (or at least that I remember).

Anonymous said...

Jan, I haven't seen those turtles 9or many frogs either0 the last couple of years. Another reason to miss our fluent rains.

I'm glad to see you got your wireless up and running (was it turned off on your laptop?), and hope you are having an enjoyable trip.

As for the storms, we could use a few of those down here. I have heard that those storms in Arkansas can be horrendous (if you're not used to them), and can be quite common. Hope it stays calm for you while you're there.

Carol, I've had a fall on a dirt bike too (many years ago). I did it myself though ( was not a passenger) . I was just learning to ride and got a little rowdy before I started skidding on loose dirt and laid it sideways -- because I panicked, I stepped on the gas instead of hitting the breaks, and continued to scraped myself up long enough to get my leg in pretty bad shape (bloody gouged skin and flesh). I was dumb enough to be wearing shorts. I'm just glad that it never happened to me on asphalt. My riding did improve after that though. I seem to have to always learn things 'the hard way'.

.... would never catch me on a bike now though -- well, except maybe a bicycle, although i don't even own one of them anymore (and don't have plans to, either). I do have a stationary bike, but can't remember the last time I got on that either.

Coreen said...

Well its a beautiful morning here...

Guess it's back to the drawing board for all those rapture folks...I did see that the so-called 'church' manages to get millions in donations to keep it going...

Carol said...

Hey Coreen, I think it's 6 pm?? There's still time.

jan said...

Good morning to the three C's. It is overcast and looks like more rain here today. We have another flat tire. The graduation is at 10 am so we are going to ride to the grad with son and DIL. We will wait until after graduation and the party to call Triple A. John says "maybe we should wait until tomorrow in case of the rapture." LOL.

this is our 3rd flat in about a year - and always on the road. Don't know if its the tires or the car. When we return to NM we are thinking of getting another car.

jan said...

We did see Kirstie on the Leno show last night. She has definitely lost some wt. She is a funny person. Did not see Haley.

jan said...

Hope you guys have a great Saturday. I had no problem getting on to the internet last night and this am. so I guess the problem in Weatherford was the weather or the hotel. John got on but he had problems with it.

Coreen said...

Jan, hope the mishaps along the way are over...
car & weather related...

enjoy the graduation...being with your family am sure makes it all worth it...

Carol said...

Jan, I also saw Kirsty on Leno. I guess she is trying to stack the deck. As far as dancing talent goes, I think Hine's is better and he has a huge fan base but I'm going with the 60 year old girl.

What about Chelsae you say? Well, I kinda think she may have been voted off last week if there hadn't been that 15 point advantage she got. Just a guess. Even though she is the very best dancer, most of the time, I don't think she has the fan base. I could be wrong.

Coreen said...

Not to worried Carol...it's been 6 pm somewhere already...

Carol said...

I watched the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. I've only seen it a few times and it's very funny. I think I'll set my DVR to record it every night.

SNL has their finale tonight. It should be good. Got that scheduled for recording also.

Carol said...

Coreen, did you catch my magic potion? There should be a turn around coming for your boys soon.

Carol said...

Well, off to do my chores and visit SF. Can't take a chance on still being here later.

Coreen said...

By the way, did I mention I have a woodpecker
who walks down its tree every day when I go out with the bird seed...he/she talks to me like it knows...there is a 2nd woodpecker around too...not sure how to telll male/female
since they both have a red head...

the bad thing is one of them is pecking the house...when the carpenter was here walking around to see where he had to replace some rotting trimboards, he noticed the pecks...

there are so many trees around not to happy its pecking the house....

Coreen said...

Carol, didn't want to mention your 'swamp magic' since they lost to the cross=town Mets...& I have to listen to the Mets fans on the sports radio station gloating...

Sure hope that it kicks in fast...

Jan,
Good to see you checked in today -- bad to hear you've got a flat. Maybe it's that road you travel. The guy that fixes it will tell you if it's a nail, screw or whatever. Sounds like you are going to have a great day.

"I watched the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. I've only seen it a few times and it's very funny.

You mentioning Jimmy Kimmel reminds me of a clip I saw with him singing that song that Ryan Gosling sings on 'Blue Valentine'. I loved the song clip I saw on the net, and ordered the movie. Turns out that that song was the best thing about the movie -- it just wasn't that good. Hmmm, no happy ending again (kiss of death for me).
This is the clip with Kimmel (it's funny, and Ryan Gosling is so adorable): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykgRDSJ6onE&feature=related

This is the promotion clip that makes the movie look so good, If anyone is interested..... the clip is great -- but the movie isn't. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809945752/trailer

Coreen, that was a wonderful cat story.

And Chloe, watching the video made me realize that it wasn't the Jimmy Kimmel show I watched and liked last night, It was the Jimmy Fallon show.
