Images of Santa Fe

I am posting some more pics of Santa Fe. Some are images in a window. They speak to me not just of SF, but of New Mexico, a state I have come to love so much. Two pictures are of some art (pottery and paintings) from NM Native American artists. One picture is of some Santa Fe fashion.

The next to last picture is a painting on a wall with real flowers in front of it.

Those are some award winning pics Jan. You have definitely evolved as a photographer.

There is something interesting about that first pic. Was there a smokey look at the top of that painting or did you pick up some ectoplasm in that picture??

"Ectoplasm (from the Greek ektos, meaning "outside", and plasma, meaning "something formed or molded") is a term coined by Charles Richet to denote a substance or spiritual energy "exteriorized" by physical mediums.[1] Ectoplasm is said to be associated with the formation of spirits[by whom?], and asserted to be an enabling factor in psychokinesis" Wikipedia

I just heard on the news tonight that they may have to evacuate the inmates at our huge state prison at Angola because of the rise in the Mississippi River. I hope we won't be picking up some of those guys.

jan said...

Carol, the 1st & 3rd pics were taken through the store window, so there is some glare from the window. The door was open so the pic of the dresses was not through a window.

Carol said...

Did you see Idol tonight? You have to hear Haley do House of the Rising Sun. I think that was the best performance, of all of them, of the season.

Carol said...

I checked into American Idol Net and I wasn't alone in thinking that and Haley is usually not a favorite there. Both girls got kudos tonight.

Carol said...

And, I think I actually voted my 50 times tonight, me and the teeny boppers. I'm not sure if I hit 50 because I kinda lost count.

Carol said...

Now it's time to hit the ironing. I really enjoyed your pics tonight Jan. With your bag and your pics, you win the artist award.

Wonderful pictures Jan.
As you share more and more pics of New Mexico, I'm getting more and more of a feeling for that beautiful state of yours. You've caught the essence.

That window is such a work of art, and the clothes in the next pic are gorgeous. Never seen anything like that here.

And boy, is that wall painting with the flowers in front of it really striking.
Carol is right, you are a great photographer. You've got the eye for it.

... and I didn't even mention the pottery - never seen anything like it.

Saw this last night and I got such a kick out of the comments below the picture of bin Laden's so called mansion:

One of comments had an interesting thought, that brought in focus important 'revenge' can be so helpful in closure: "the best thing no matter what is that the last thing that piece of crap saw was an american soldier pulling the trigger to blow his brains out" The grounds of the compound are seen after U.S. Navy SEAL commandos killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad

.... most of the comments are just kinda funny though, questing has our news media can call that a mansion, and question that it could cost over a million dollars.

(I'm thinking maybe that included some of the payoff money he had to give to keep the cover-up going for 5 years)

Pakistan warns America not to stage any more raids

"Pakistan warned America Thursday of "disastrous consequences" if it carries out any more unauthorized raids against suspected terrorists like the one that killed Osama bin Laden." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110505/ap_on_re_as/as_pakistan_bin_laden

That takes some nerve. If they weren't harboring the worlds number one terrorist, there wouldn't have been a raid. The amount of money the U.S. has given them to help fight terrorism makes this even more sickening.

Can you imagine if we had asked for their 'authorization' -- bin Laden would have been long gone.

Joe Biden opens his mouth about US Navy SEALs
"Since President Barack Obama announced that “a small team of Americans” had killed Osama bin Laden, US government officials have carefully stuck to the line that they will not talk about which units were involved.

But here’s what the legendarily verbose and loose-lipped Vice President Joe Biden said at a dinner at Washington’s Ritz Carlton Hotel last night to mark the 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Council:

Let me briefly acknowledge tonight’s distinguished honorees. Admiral James Stavridis is a, is the real deal. He can tell you more about and understands the incredible, the phenomenal, the just almost unbelievable capacity of his Navy SEALs and what they did last Sunday" http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/tobyharnden/100086416/joe-biden-opens-his-mouth-about-us-navy-seals/

Anonymous said...

... hard to believe that was just a slip of the tongue (even though we knew it was the Seals anyway).

The Slippery Story of the bin Laden Kill
The note at the top of this article points out how we now only get 'tabloid' news (don't even need to read the article, which is old news by now). I don't care about the details of whether he was armed or whether or not he was hiding behind women -- just glad he's gone. But it sure points out (even more clearly) how quickly and deliberately our news is reported from rumors.

Carol, John and I were blown away by Haley's last song (House...Sun). She was amazing. I got goose bumps listening to her. When I get goose bumps when I hear some music, I am really moved by it. We voted for her until we when to bed. John was almost on his feet from her song. She has truly progressed in her singing. I think she is now the one to beat. This is why I love Idol. It is a chance to hear an occasional young person really progress in their artistry. As Coreen said some time ago, not many really become true artists and make it to the top, but occasionally you see one do that. I think if Haley is serious about her singing, she can be one of those. This is the most talented group ever.

jan said...

The problem this season is that it is the young girls who are doing so much of the voting, and I fear it will be Scottie who will win for that reason. It does not matter though, because each of them is being heard by the nation and by the music producers who can help them with their careers.

jan said...

Thanks you all for the kind words about the pictures. I take pictures of what "moves" me or lately what I think you guys here may like to see. I sure don't consider myself any kind of talent with it.

I did get tired of looking at the bags. LOL.

jan said...

The picture of the top painting is one of my favorites. I don't know anything about the artist. I should have gone into the exhibit and checked out the artist. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Pottery, jewelry and woven rugs are the specialities of the southwestern Native peoples here in NM and Arizona. The pottery and rugs are very expensive. I have four pieces of pottery - that were not terribly expensive. A pot by a good Native artist can cost up into the thousands. Many people come to NM just to buy the pottery. Most go to the fiestas held by the Native peoples and buy straight from the artists.

Coreen said...

Jan, an interesting collection of New Mexican
life...and yes always interested in seeing these things through your eyes...

In addition to the pottery pieces, the unique
clothing, the jewelry of the southwest is very
distinctive...the use of turquoise & silver..together with the earthtones...some of which I believe are in the pottery pic...

I remember similar items for sale in Arizona,
out in Carefree, which way back was a true desert with very little population, but now friends say it is wall to wall housing all the way to the mountains...

Seems NM is trying to retain its mexican/indian
heritage...

Carol said...

Jan, I wish you would find out more about that pic and the artist. Even though I knew there might be some flash feedback in the pic, the pic would be one that could draw a little ectoplasm, spirit, to it. It didn't look just like flashback.

The pics is expressing pain and I would like to know more about that pain.

Carol said...

Just want to brag a little...I saw something in Haley from the get go. Member that?

And tell John, I was up on my feet in front of my TV when she sang that song. I gave her a standing O even though only Maggie knew about it. And I really liked the first Gaga song she did. Just because I had never heard it before didn't take anything away. Those judges are a little shallow, thinking that we must recognize the song to appreciate the singing??? They did her no favors with their criticism.

I'm glad these kids stick to their guns when it comes to what they want to perform. Gives me more respect for the younger generation. I have respect for Casey for sticking to his jazz/blues even though it may have caused his early termination. He will still reap benefits from his committment.

Carol said...

Reading some of the Idol chatter, I see that others also thought that the judges were trying to negatively influence Haley.

Judges...STFU

Carol said...

Chloe, I agree with you on all that BL stuff.

The wicked witch is dead! I think his guilt was very obvious to the entire world so I don't care how it was accomplished. Quick was the best he could hope for. In that, he got off way too easy.

Carol said...

Gotta go back to work

Carol said...

I listened to NPR on my way home from work and someone was in Pakistan interviewing peeps about how they feel about the recent event there. Everyone he asked, who they aired, said they don't believe BL is dead. They want pics. Also they were disturbed/angry that we went into their country with this raid.

I say tough poopy on the pics part. They can't manipulate us. They might be wanting to incite anger. As far as the going into their country...if they'd take care of business we wouldn't have to. And they are welcome to return the 3 Bil we sent their way. I would rather my hard earned, hard paid tax dollars go for our peeps here.

Since they didn't believe he was dead, none of the ones I heard expressed an opinion on how they felt about that.

Our Hines, of DWTS, was stopped at gunpoint today when he was riding with some woman who had reported her car stolen in April. She did find the car but forgot the let the police know.

I think Hines needs to find a date with a little more upstairs, up past the boobs.

jan said...

Carol, interesting perception on your part as to "pain" Do you mean in their facial expressions? I don't see it. The Native peoples here don't show a lot of facial expression - at least like whites/anglos do. I don't know how to find out about the artist. Any ideas you guys? I don't remember the name of the gallery the picture was in. There are lots of art galleries in SF. It is a mecca for art.

In reference to the picture of the horses and 2 Native people, I think the artist did a great job with their eyes. The picture is so good, it looks like a photograph.

jan said...

Carol, you may be right about the pain. The Native peoples say they have a great deal of historical pain.

jan said...

Carol, If you visit us here, you may want to come when they have the "Gathering of the Nations" This is when all the Indian and Alaskan peoples come together here. They dress in native dress and do their native dances. They just had a Gathering... last weekend. I hate to admit I have never attended. It is open to anyone who wants to attend.

jan said...

"Just want to brag a little...I saw something in Haley from the get go. Member that?"

Carol, yes you did! I do remember. Kudos to you for that. She showed her stuff last night to all of us. She has certainly become more confident about her talent too. As the judges say "Kaley is in it to win it!

jan said...

Coreen, yes - I agree that NM is retaining its Indian/hispanic heritage. Something I found out in the past couple of years is that the hispanic heritage is diverse. Most of the people in northern NM are of Spanish heritage from centuries ago and people in southern NM are primarily of Mexican heritage. Those in the north feel somewhat superior to those in the south. Anglos/whites are a lesser percentage of the population in comparison to the hispanics in NM. The Native peoples (indians) make up about 10% of the NM population.

Carol said...

Jan, do those red streaks just below the eyes of the two Natives represent tears. That's what I was thinking.

jan said...

Carol, I don't know if the red streaks rep tears or not. Interesting idea! I just looked at them as "war paint"

jan said...

The historical pain is representative of the pain the Native Peoples feel for their ancestors who endured death, disease and destruction of their homes and land by those who emigrated here. I certainly felt that emotional pain when I read about how the Cherokees were put off their land and homes in Georgia during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. This was part of the Trail of Tears. So many Cherokees died during that awful drive to OK. I had ancestors in that move.

Carol said...

What is the tribe?

Carol said...

I hate this part of American Idol. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Carol said...

They are all my Idols.

Carol said...

Well, I'm least sad about who left tonight but still sad. Now, I'm really going to crying next week. I know the judges and a good bit of the audience are crazy about Scottie but he'd be my next choice to go. He will definitely have a career as do the rest.

Carol said...

Maggie and I are splitting a 2 inch thick grilled fillet mignon. Yum. Drowning my sorrows in some saturated fat.

Coreen said...

Hope all of the idols do manage to succeed beyond the show, Carol..I may be the only person who doesn't appreciate them....my cousins watches it & she agrees with you guys that this season's singers are the most talented...

Coreen said...

Interesting facts about NM Jan...would the distinction between the northen spanish & the southern mexicans be that spainiards may have
explored into the southwest & settled in as
you say the northern area & the descendants of
mexicans in the south would have migrated from
mexico...

am not surprised that their combination is in the majority & that whites or as you say anglos
are a minority there...I also believe that there is a very small population of blacks/african americans in NM...

as to indians/native americans...were they original inhabitants even before the spaniards/mexicans or were they migrants as well....is NM where the indian tribe cavedwellers were or was that arizona...

Coreen said...

as to the sense of superiority...I remember my spanish teacher in college...european spaniards
felt that over the america's spanish descendants...I believe the pronunciation of
some spanish words was slightly different as well reflecting whether you spoke a european
style spanish or a south american spanish...

Coreen said...

Both on this evenings news & in the NYT there was an article of how the 9/11 Memorial has placed the names of the 2,982 people who
perished that day...& which will open to family
members on September 11 & then to the public
by reservation thereafter...

Rather than simply a list of the names, they
grouped the names by linking them to others they may have worked with, lived with and likely died with...

The names of these victims were grouped by north & south tower, or by flight, with panels set aside for victims at the Pentagon & those who died in the 1993 attack on the trade center.

A separate section was set aside for the 'first
responders' principally firefighters and police officers...
Constructing a Story with 2,982 Names

Carol said...

That's interesting Coreen.

jan said...

Coreen, thanks for sharing this information about the Memorial and how they have grouped the victims.

jan said...

Carol, I drove over to see my granddaughter and G GD tonight for a visit. I had not seen Amie and Abigail for 2-3 weeks. They are flying to Phoenix tomorrow to spend the weekend with Amie's mother. John taped Idol and we just finished watching it. I feel the same way you did earlier tonight. I feel sad that anyone has to leave, but Jacob was my choice to leave too. I too hope he and all the rest have careers in music. I was concerned for Lauren. I was afraid she was going to lose it up there.

jan said...

"What is the tribe?"

Carol, Hmmm, trying to figure this one out.

jan said...

Coreen, I think you are correct about the northers and southern groups in NM. Actually, many of the Mexican-Americans were here when NM became a state - so we, the anglos, are the interlopers. The native peoples were here - some of them descendants of the peoples who were the Anasazi, and who left the cliff dwellings close to Durango, CO, in Arizona and here in NM. NM, Colo & Arizona are rich in this diverse heritage.

jan said...

I read a couple of books to little Abigail tonight.

Yesterday, I decided it was going to be such a beatimus day that I was going to take the day off. Life is short.

Then last night I decided to listen to C2C and the program I heard made me even more glad I took the day off.

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone, I'm going to be out of pocket for the next few days. Taking time off the computer f to concentrate on some projects and plans we've got going. Should be back about the middle or end of next week.

Hope you all have a great weekend! The weather's right.

Anonymous said...

I really am curious what you heard on C2C though, Carol.

Carol said...

Well, let me tell you that is was fantastic and frightening. I've pondered even mentioning it here. I was so intrigued that I sat straight up in bed and listened to almost all of it, dreamed about it and woke up at 3a this morning and finished listening to it.

"Dr. Judy Wood is a former professor of mechanical engineering. She has research expertise in experimental stress analysis, structural mechanics, deformation analysis, materials characterization and materials engineering science. In the time since 9/11/01, she has applied her expertise to a forensic study of over 40,000 images, hundreds of video clips and a large volume of witness testimony pertaining to the destruction of the WTC complex."

She has a new book out and I ordered it this morning. She's given up a lot to try to find the truth and I'm not sure we can even handle the truth.

Carol said...

Some of the news media brought up questions at the time but never got answers and stopped asking. Interesting.

I've heard several shows in the past where MANY architects have questions what happened saying that those towers couldn't have come down due to the planes or the fire. Where did most of the rubble go?? Tons of unanswered questions. No one in the MSM has ever picked up that ball and run with it. Only poor George.

Carol said...

This woman has martered herself for this cause and I feel that buying her book is the least I can do.

Carol said...

Had 9 calls from work so far this morning, including one while I was in the shower, one while I was blow drying my hair and one every time I got on the phone with anyone else. And this is my vacation day.

jan said...

I will miss you Chloe.

jan said...

Chloe, Hope you have a wonderful next few days of doing whatever you will be doing.

I have a very busy week coming up too. The folks where I work know I will be away for 2-3 weeks in later May so they are piling on the work for me.

Happy Friday everyone.

Sounds like Chloe might be working, not necessarily playing. Jan, are you taking a vacation?

Because I didn't get any sleep last night, I did spend much of today napping off and on and it was beautiful outside. I did get my grocery shopping and washing done though.

C2C had so many interesting programs on this week. Some weeks I'm not interested in any of them and some weeks they are all good.

This afternoon I napped to this John Hogue, a Nostradamus expert. He was discussing predictions for the rest of 2011. Lets see, he's concerned about hurricanes, thinks there may be more along to Atlantic coast and is worried about Miami. Also the possibility of earthquakes along the Pacific rim. He mentioned maybe this month or Sept or Nov.

Carol said...

Coreen, did you realize you had a stage 3 hurricane, Erin, bearing down on your ass on 9-11-01? I don't remember that. I only remember the mention of what a beautiful day it was in New York City that day. The overall size of that storm was larger than Katrina. That was something I found interesting.

I looked it up on Wiki and it was there. It did head away after that.

The Christians are predicting the rapture on 5/21. My GD in Ark is graduating from HS that morning at 10 am. When I was a young child I lived in constant worry that the rapture would come and I would be separated from my mother. What a crock of **** for young children to deal with. My mother took us to an Assembly of God church every night.

jan said...

I try not to listen to the end of the world stuff and rapture stuff any more.

jan said...

Did you have a good day yesterday Carol?

jan said...

We are leaving for Ark. on 5/19 for GD's graduation on 5/21. We wills stay in ARK for about a week and then head for Kanuga NC (close to Asheville) for a spirituality/Dream conference that lasts about 5 days. Then will take a few days to drive home. We have been trying to get to this conference in NC for several years. They have it twice a year in the summer. I suspect we will try to go again. It is something that we took part in while living in ARK.

The conf is in a retreat center. Wonder if they will have wifi?? One of the leaders of the conf is the former Episcopal Bishop of ARK.

Today is the anniversary of the day that Lobie died last year. John and I are going to take her ashes and spread on the little 9 hole golf course close to our house. We walked with her there for about 6 years. She loved that walk. Us too. We don't walk there much anymore. So many memories of her there.
