A couple of nuts

Hard to believe we put up new posts at same time and then deleted at same time.

OK, here it is.

Carol said...

Yep, we were both in synch tonight. Weird, definitely weird.

Carol said...

You have Idol on yet?

Carol said...

I put up a new post so it wouldn't be so confusing with the overflow. At the same time I was doing it, Jan was also.

When I saw hers, I deleted mine and while I was posting a comment on her, she deleted hers.

jan said...

yes, it is on. It is 9:24 here. So I think I will get results before you.

jan said...

Carol, Is Coreen not able to get on? Have you heard from Chloe?

Carol said...

Jan, I'm not sure if I saved your life tonight by diverting you to east Tennessee but I saved you and John a little under the mattress time, not the same as on the mattress time. You might have been pissed at me for that.

Carol said...

She still can't get in.

Carol said...

Who is Laren singing with? Oh, that's Carrie Underwood.

Carol said...

Well, you finally have a star on the map. You didn't have one in Arkansas.

Carol said...

I just love those other Idol kids. Scotty and Lauren are sweet also, just not my idea for Idol.

Carol said...

I saw on American Idol Net that that both Scotty and Lauren have an album you can download for 9.99. They want to strike before the excitement wears off. In a couple of weeks, those teeny boppers, who voted for them. will have moved on to some other passion.

jan said...

I put up some pictures I took while John was blasting down the hwy. The one of the billboard is Dolly Parton. We had stopped for the one of the I 40 sign and the market and deli sign

jan said...

Carol, we are happy to get on down the road. Knoxville is much nicer countryside than Nashville. And you never know if that storm will move further east. We did hear from John's brother that a small tornado touched down in Stuttgart AR. We drove through there about one hour out of LR.

jan said...

What time is Idol on for you tonight

jan said...

We have to find some new shows to watch together since DWTS and Idol are ending this week.

Carol said...

It's one at the same time but the actual time is an hour later there.

Coreen is an hour later but we watch things at the same time.

Carol said...

Neat pics Jan. I think the coast is clear now in Memphis if you want to go back. Of course you may have to pass a couple of tors to get back there.

Carol said...

Jan, I'm glad ya'll moved east to spend the night. Saved me alot of worry tonight. You and big sis are alike when it comes to not worrying about bad things happening, ie., what will be will be. But I was thinking more about what has been has been. I'm still stressing about all those people in Joplin and Ok et al.

Carol said...

Ya know when we have hurricanes, we get plenty of warning to get out. And most of the damage done during a hurricane, besides the tidal surge, is from tornados embedded in the hurricane.

jan said...

Sorry you worried. We were glad to get this far down the road. We are going to have 3 days in asheville. We need it. It has been stressful with family, I am sorry to say.

Carol said...

When does your retreat in NC start?

Carol said...

Both Scotty and Lauren have the look of a sick stomach on their faces.

jan said...

ok, here it comes

Carol said...

I knew Scotty would win.

jan said...

I knew it would be Scotty. A girl just cannot get a break on this show anymore. Oh Well! I think we all expected it.

Carol said...

But little Lauren will do just fine. Maybe better than Scotty. She has a better voice than he does.

jan said...

Retreat starts on Sunday afternoon and ends on Friday morning.

jan said...

I guess that is his family he has been hugging. It has been a fun season. Really talented group of people. And the judges are better. There has been more focus on the kids and less on the judges personal issues - i think.

Carol said...

It was American Idol's best season, except for the end. Well, it's the only season I ever watched.

jan said...

bless his heart. He is crying

Carol said...

What do you think Jan? You have watched a bunch of them.

Carol said...

They're all crying, inside.

jan said...

I think it would be so interesting if a magazine put Scotty's pic on the front next to the pic of the cartoon kid in Mad Magazine. I saw that pic the other day and it does have a striking resemblance to Scotty.

jan said...

I think it was the most exciting season I have seen, just because of the talent of the kids.

jan said...

John and I are so glad to be taking a little vacation. We love Ashville. About 10 years ago, we did a raft trip down the Broad River. We are talking about doing that again (of course the raft has a guide who taught us how to use a paddle). We have never toured the Biltmore and we want to do that too.

jan said...

I need to get off here for a while. I am having a little reflux.

Carol said...

Coreen, do we need to send a computer geek to get you up and running?. If I got in with my PC and IE, you should be able to also.

Carol said...

Nite Jan. I have to do Maggie and ironing and then bedtime for Bonzo. I haven't had more than about 4 hours a sleep a night all week.

Carol said...

Jan, you need that antacid I told you about for reflux. Can't remember the name of it now. It's the only thing that is instant. Everything else takes too much time to work. That antacid would work in minutes.

Anonymous said...

trying again

Anonymous said...

OK I went through typepad, the same I use on TM...& voila...

Anonymous said...

trying goggle account, didn't work & I used
2 different email accounts

Carol said...

It might start working the regular way later Coreen. It's probably a temporary glitch. You might have to use the google handle to put up a new post. I'm not sure.

Carol said...

Well, I'm late with bedtime routine. Hate to run. Nite Coreen. I missed you.

Miss you too Chloe! Swamp to Chloe, where are ought thou?

Anonymous said...

Ok, I did a 'new post' with 1 pic & it posted,
but I still could not comment using goggle account...I deleted the pic post...

Anonymous said...

Will have to see what tomorrow brings...

Jan, be safe...seems you & John are traveling
with the weather...

Local forecasters here are saying the bad weather may start breaking up in the mid-west
in the next 12 hours, so by the time it reaches the East Coast it won't be as deadly as it has been so far...

Carol said...

Been watching AC 360. Seems there is a mini rapture going on. People just beamed up and disappeared.

It seems crazy that in these disaster situations that the news media can accomplish things that the government officials should be doing but aren't. After Katrina the news guys were right in the thick of it giving out water but the government couldn't get in. Makes no sense.

jan said...

Coreen, good to see you here.

Carol, the reflux is ok now. The zantac usually works pretty quickly.

jan said...

Chloe, Wish we could hear from you.

jan said...

How funny that Knoxville shows up here. We can each run, but we can't hide. LOL.

jan said...

Coreen, thanks. We try to be safe. Carol called me this morning and said we needed to keep driving past west Tennessee as there were predictions of tornados there. So that is what we did. And sure enough, Memphis had a tornado. A part of Ark that we drove through this morning had a tornado touch down this afternoon.

We did talk about spending tonight in Memphis since we have several days until the retreat starts. Memphis has good music on Beale street. But glad we didn't do that.

jan said...

Good night.

Carol said...

Jan, since I don't watch AI, do both the winner and the runner up both get stuff like Scotty and Lauren did? Both of their mom's got a car and both of them got a car. It almost looked like a tie. Maybe it was. They also both got to do an album.

Carol said...

A NY congresswoman made a good point here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-louise-slaughter/unfit-to-stand-trial-yet_b_867128.html

She thought it was a little nuts that someone could be unfit to stand trial for killing multiple people but was OK to get a gun.

Carol said...

I have been obsessed with these tornado stories. I know many are so tragic but there are also so many miracles. I like to hear about miracles.

jan said...

Good morning all. It is a pretty good morning here. I thought the sky was blue but John says it is grey. Oh Well. We will drive to Asheville today and stay there 3 days until we can check in at the Inn at Kanuga on Sun afternoon.

We didn't catch all of Idol last night but both Scottie and Lauren had named a teacher that they liked and they were there and were both given a car. Scottie and Lauren got a Ford of their choice. I do not know who else got cars.

jan said...

I can remember growing up that every spring tornados hit somewhere in OK or Kansas. I don't ever remember this much loss of life. We did not have the TV coverage of storms but we did have radio coverage. We lived in the country and when the weather was bad, my dad would stay outside and watch the sky. I only remember one time that he got excited about a storm. He yelled at us kids to tell my mother to get out of the bathtub. She was taking a bath. We did not have a storm shelter (we called them cellars). Cellars were built underground and people also used them for storing canned foods sometimes. We always knew to get in the center of the house, preferably a closet to wait out a storm.

jan said...

Our house in Albuq. is not a southwestern style. The woman who had it built in 1950's was from Illinois and it looks midwestern. It has a finished basement and the door going into the basement looks like an old-timey cellar door. It is very interesting. So if there was ever bad weather in Alb, we would be in the basement. Sometime I will take a pic of the cellar door. It is at the back of the house. I cannot open it from the inside as it is too heavy. John can open it.

jan said...

John says the weather person says there will be a storm in Nashville so glad we did not stay there last night. Nashville is in center of state (from east to west). Knoxville much prettier scenery. It is in Great Smokey Mts.

jan said...

I read in on line news last night that Lauren had some problems with her vocal cords yesterday and they did not know if she would be able to sing last night. But a doc gave her something for it and she recovered by showtime.

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone...

Carol, not following the tornado coverage, but did here this a.m. that there were 81 yesterday but no loss of life...so that's an
improvement...

Jan, you mention basements, from what I saw of
the tornado damage it looks like homes in the
midwest are built on slabs, without a basement...here most homes have a basement built of cement...the foundations of homes are
dug below ground level, made with cement & rebar (iron bars that are I believe used for
support) then the house is built usually of 4 x 8 wood boards above ground...& yes we have that outside cellar door made of metal that lifts up & out...there is also a door at the bottom of the stairs from ground level into the cellar/basement...& another to enter the basement from upstairs in the house itself...
the cellar door at my old house was very heavy
metal, but the newer ones are made of much
lighter metal so not difficult to push it open...

Hope the rest of your drive is uneventful...

Would have loved to see pics of Memphis....& even more if you had the chance to drive by Graceland...that is the only place I would like
to see even though I know it is not as big a deal as one imagines...

I have been told it is right on the street
in Memphis not tucked away as you imagine
a 'mansion' would be...

Anonymous said...

Also heard this am that the storms are going to
be less intense as they continue moving east...

Jan, is the retreat you are attending in Asheville near the Biltmore Estate...I mentioned that friends had stopped there to see
it recently...said it was interesting to see
the place & grounds...

Some explanations for all the tornadoes...

La Nina, a cyclical system oftrade winds that cool the water of the Pacific...

This year La Nina was very powerful, but La Nina made a sudden exit about 3 months ago...

La Nina has a stabilizing effect on the jet stream & pushes it to higher latitudes, w/o La Nina around, the jet stream has gone rogue....It should be farther north this time of year, instead the jet stream has spent April & May draped across the middle of the country, where it has the chance to violently mix cool, dry northern air with warm, moist southern air...

And in 2011, those 2 air masses have been on the extreme ends of the temperature scale..Hot/cold....

Lingering effects of last winter's record snowfalls & snow packs have kept northern air especially cold & the strong La Nina fueled unusually hot conditions in the southwest...

And, the sea surface temperature of the Gulf of Mexico is between 1.8 & 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than average...the perfect fuel for severe weather...

However, scientists say it is important to take a hard look at the numbers before jumping to any conclusions about the sheer numbers of tornadoes & whether those numbers are going up...

Decades ago, when the country was more sparsely populated--and not everyone had a camera/cell phone--there were simply fewer people around to spot & report tornadoes...

In addition, the fact that with increasing urbanization, more people are affected when storms do hit, putting tornadoes in the spotlight...

The Science behind this terrible tornado season

Carol said...

Thanks Coreen for linking that weather article. I have always been fascinated with the weather. I'm fascinated with mother nature.

I've been monitoring the Weather Channel for days now. I will also tune into AC 360 at night to catch up on what's happening in Joslin. I have at least one channel on all night.

jan said...

Coreen, excellent info about our severe weather this year.

Carol said...

I see they dropped the number of missing in Joslin to 232. I hope it keeps dropping. I hope they didn't lose that many more.

We don't have many tornado in my neck of the woods. Good thing because no basements or shelters. Can't dig a hole around here without it filling with water. Well, with this drought we've had, that might have recently changed but it won't last.

They always say jump in a ditch but when there's bad weather around here, it's always accompanied by lots of heavy rain. If you jump in a ditch, better have a snorkel. And I think those tornado would just suck you out of a ditch.

Saw this article that Jan may appreciate but she's probably already aware of this.

Tornado Dog Crawls Home On Broken Legs Almost 3 Weeks After Deadly Alabama Storm

I hope they can fix this pup's legs.

jan said...

Carol, have not heard about this bit of info about BF.

Poor dog.

jan said...

Coreen, we drove fast thru Memphis since storms were headed in that direction. We have visited Elvis' home and it is not what one might expect. I thought it would be this grand mansion and it is not. It has been about 20 years since our visit there.

Anonymous said...

Was just going to post the story about the dog finding his way home with 2 broken legs after being blown away....

The Yahoo piece says he should be ok after
vets attached metal plates to his bones so they can heal..

"Mason is "doing fantasic" after his May 20 surgery where metal plates were attached to his bones so they could heal, Doster told The Lookout in an email. "We are excited that he will be going back to his family and to the home where he finally returned after 3 weeks," he wrote. Mason is expected to be able to walk completely normally after he recovers in about six weeks, though his front legs will be a bit shorter than his back legs. Mason's family has requested to not be named in the media, Doster added, but they are "very excited" for Mason to come home when their house is again inhabitable in about five weeks."

jan said...

So glad to hear Mason will once again be with his family. What kind and generous vets.

Johns Brother has a dog that was thrown out of a car or pickup and left for dead and a vet fixed her broken leg. Bro and wife adopted her.

Carol said...

Thanks for the update Coreen. I was worried about what they did about his legs. I don't think my story said.

Ya know, you may wonder why I emerse myself in this tragedy but I feel like there is something for us to learn from it. Something this horrendous must have a purpose besides being just a terrible occurance. It must have something to teach us and I want to learn from it so we don't have to repeat the lesson.

Carol said...

And some of the people on C2C said we would be moving into a time when we would be required to pull together as a community, depend on one another.

Each of these people and animals involved in this experience have something to tell us. And thanks to CNN for covering it so well and trying to advocate for those who need help.

Carol said...

Jan, whenever you are ready with some new pics, go for it.

jan said...

Carol, I took some windshield photos today but not interesting. I will try and get some tomorrow.

Please put up some that are more interesting if anyone has some.

jan said...

I am ready to hear what you all are doing out there. I think I am having withdrawal from DWTS and Idol. Nothing on TV except news -

jan said...

I spent some time this afternoon on line with folks back home at work and just finished doing some work I brought along with me. Now that is all finished and I am ready to play the rest of vacation.

Carol said...

Are you having a thunderstorm over your way?

Carol said...

Jan, tell us about the conference you are attending.

Carol said...

I was listening to a country station on my way home from today and thought...I think Scotty does have a better voice than many of the current country singing stars. Many of them, even though I like them, don't have the greatest voices.

Carol said...

Lauren was on Leno tonight. She definitely had star power. Piers Morgan was also on and she told him she'd tried out for America's Got Talent and didn't make the cut. She said lots of those on Idol are AGT rejects.

Carol said...

I read that NC had some bad storms last night and lost some power in areas. I thought it was strange that Jan didn't check in last night. I hope that weather didn't effect her. It certainly chased her across country. Ya just can't run from it.

Carol said...

I took a vacation day today. Taking my vacation one at a time gives me more vacations. I stayed up late last night and they woke me up this morning at 5. After the first call I managed to fall asleep again for 5 minutes and then the second call got me up.

Carol said...

Coreen, I found one problem to this google blog. It seems when you check the option to stay logged in, it's more likely to lock you out. Don't check stay logged in.

I hit the stay logged in this morning so I woldn't have to sign in every time and when I went to view the blog, it said sign in. I signed out, went to delete the cookies again, then went back, signed in, without checking the option to stay signed in and I got in again.

Was wondering if you were going to be able to take an extra day off to start the weekend...

The day is starting out really pleasant...The
storms are moving toward the coast, but not expected to be anywhere near as destructive...
once they pass by it is supposed to be a pleasant weekend...

I gave up on the goggle link for now, it just
kept throwing everything off, so for awhile I'll use the typepad entry...

Carol said...

I just finished talking to Jan. They're OK.

Yes, taking an extra day with a holiday gives me the closest thing I can get to a vacation.

jan said...

Just got on. Took a walk around hotel for 30 minutes. Found a cardboard box turned on its side in back and under a big tree. There is a bowl inside the box - I think for a cat. We walked over to McD for breakfast - I like their oatmeal and fruit. On way back stopped by cardboard box. Sure enough someone put out some kitty food and a few feet from the box was a little black and white cat. I bet the employees here have adopted the cat - maybe more than one - as there was enough food for 2-3 kitties.

jan said...

Carol, so glad you are taking a vacation day- hope you have some fun this weekend.

It is overcast here, but I see some sun behind the clouds. It did rain a lot last night, but dry this morning.

Have you all been watching the Casey trial - the young woman accused of killing her little 2 y/o girl. Wonder if her dad did do all that the defense is saying he did.

Coreen, what do you think about the above?

jan said...

I was happy to see that Eliz Smart's kidnapper got life imprisonment.

jan said...

John has gone down to use the exercise room. Think I will join him and then get in a little swim.

Carol said...

Jan, I think the only hope Casey's defense has is to try to present some reasonable doubt. That will be a difficult task. That girl is a psychopath/sociopath, IMO. She was out having a ball when he cute baby was missing. That's all it took for me. I'm seeing more and more women like that.

jan said...

according to the defense, she was never missing but drowned in the family pool. So if this is true, when Casey was out partying, her baby was dead. The defense is saying Casey's dad sexually abused her when she was a child. and that the dad found the drowned baby. Said Casey was protecting him.

jan said...

Off to see Asheville.

Carol said...

Well, it's 90 outside but only 50% humidity. Yes Coreen, only 50%. That's low for us. Whew!

Coreen, I see you're up to 80 but a low humidity. Jan wins, with Asheville a nice 64 but overcast.

Carol said...

I'm not acclimated to this heat yet. Well, I really never do get acclimated to it. I run out and do something and run back in to cool off.

Carol said...

I've been taking Maggie with me when I go to the wash room, 1.7 miles away. She thinks she's going to the circus. It's a little more work but if it makes her so happy it's worth the trouble.

Carol said...

I just found out that the Casey Anthony trial is live on HLN. I used to be addicted to Court TV years ago. I recorded and watched the entire Menendez brothers and OJ Simpson trials.

Carol said...

Ut oh, I can smell a new addiction coming. But I do have some open TV viewing time now with dancing and Idol over.

Anonymous said...

Yes it has topped 80 this afternoon...sun is out, just a smidge of humidity...a good day
to sit in the shade...but no so much fun
driving (everyone is in a big hurry on an almost-summer Friday get away for the holiday
p.m.)...& carrying plants not so much fun either....

Left the office early, picked up a rose bush(red)...I picked up 2 the beginning of the week
(pink & yellow)...hopefully to repot them tomorrow...the ones from last year didn't make it through the winter.... & 12 New Guinea impatiens for the planters near the garage...that's my only weekend gardening task....

Anonymous said...

Sorry but have not followed the news about the
FL child killing trial...not likely to pay
much attention to it...

Carol said...

The defense is making some good points with his cross of Casey's father. Something is a little fishy there. Dad picked up his vehicle that was impounded at a lot, it smelled of decomposed body, he hasn't seen his daughter or gd for 3 weeks, he brings the car home and doesn't call the police. He's a x cop. He did look in the trunk and nothing but maggots.

Carol said...

He's not only an ex cop but an ex detective. The first thing I would have thought would have been foul play.

NEW POST
