I had a few problems with this post. I got the pics and the description under 2 different posts.

Here are some pictures of a new bag from a old bag (LOL). I finished it this afternoon. John is modeling it for me. I took 2 two-hour classes at the quilt shop to make it. I was not able to finish it in the classes. I had to get instructions over the phone to complete it. In the end I will have to say that it was actually fun to make. I will give it to my sister for her birthday on May 18. Please, anyone - feel free to put up a new post. This can be considered a filler for something to come...

I just copied the description from the other post and copied it here.

Sorry about the top picture. I don't know how to rotate it now that it is up. Maybe you can turn it Carol. If not, just turn your computer to the side.

Carol said...

I just love that purse Jan. It is great. I copied your pic and rotated it but I couldn't figure out how to delete the other pic so I made it very small. See the little smug on the side, that's John laying on his side.

That pic was just too good to have it sideways.

Carol said...

I was sending you a telepathic message to put this post up but I didn't want you to feel pressured to rush to finish it. I guess it was message recieved. Thank you so much.

Carol said...

I guess if anyone from the church sees the pic it will be...don't ask, don't tell.

Carol said...

You know, you could make one for John. Purses for men are in, and he could carry your stuff. I think that's a great idea. You'd probably need to use more manly prints and maybe he should straighten out that wrist just a tad unless he would like to check out the fish in the other pond.

Carol said...

Did you have to hand sew all of it or could you use a machine for any of it?

Carol said...

I blew up the pics to take a close look. That looks very complicated. How long did it take to make it?

Carol said...

Oh, and when you download pics from your camera, usually the mechanism on your computer to view the pics gives you the option to rotate the pic. On a PC, it has a little arrow circle at the bottom and you hit that until your pic is in the position you want it. When you click off the pic, it saves it that way. I'm not sure about how it works on a Mac.

Carol said...

If you make another purse, why don't you teach us how to do that. A class in pics.

I think my votes saved my Romeo. Did you vote last night Jan??

I thought he would be safe because if Jan and I both like him, he's got to have a big fan base out there.

Now I think I know who might be heading home and she's a better dancer than Kirsty but doesn't have near the personality.

Carol said...

That's sad. I tried to save Kendra also. She has come a very long way, both in dance and self confidence. She's a better dancer than Kirsty but is not the personality or performer that Kirsty is.

Carol said...

What's interesting is that in this dancing competition, the dancing actually comes in third to personality and charisma, even with the judges. I think the judges are as biased as us lay people.

Carol said...

And I split my votes evenly between KK, Kendra and Romeo last night.

Carol said...

If they want to release any pics of Binny, they should release the one with him hiding behind a woman, his wife. Even evil couldn't be proud of that. What a little worm. No disrespect to worms intended.

Carol, I have enjoyed your comments on the bag. Got a couple of laughs from John too. The bag was made almost totally on the machine. The only hand work was completing a seam on the bottom seam of the lining. The finishing is the outer part pulled through a long unfinished seam in the lining. The teacher called it "birthing the bag." It does look a little like a baby being pulled through a hole in the seam. I thought that was especially funny since I once worked in labor and delivery.

jan said...

I did learn a lot of new tricks in making the bag. It has 5 magnetic snaps on it that I had to learn how to put in.

jan said...

I was glad that Romeo did not get kicked off. I guess Kendra was my least favorite contestant. She had made great improvements but she lacked the personality the others had.

jan said...

I must confess that I didn't vote last night. I almost always vote on Idol but sometimes I miss voting on DWTS.

jan said...

I just finished the bag about 5 pm this afternoon. I quickly took the pictures and did the new post. I thought all the pictures were right side up on my computer before I loaded them onto the post. I was in a hurry. It is easy to rotate the pics on my computer. I just must have missed that picture. I could not figure how to rotate it once it was on the post. And I was pretty tired by that time too.

jan said...

It is almost 10 pm here. time for beddy bye. Good nite.

Coreen said...

Jan, your patchwork bag looks pretty neat...

And what a great model you have there...Made me smile when I checked in & saw his pose...

Kendra was the obvious choice to leave, but
now it will get tricky...

Jan, John still has a lot to learn about women. First of all, we usually don't have that good of posture unless in the military and standing at attention. Second, I've never seen a women with her wrist in that position because our bags might fall off our arms and we don't take any chances of dropping our bags. Third, with a bag of that size, we're more likely to carry it on our shoulders. For me, if I had a bag that big, it would be stuffed with stuff and heavy. Holding it like that would break my bicep muscle.

Carol said...

Of course, having it on our shoulder causes a lot of shoulder tendonitis but that's something we learn to live with.

Carol said...

This folk hit has as much significance now as it did back when it was popular:

Where have all the flowers gone?

Maybe it's time to give peace a chance!

Carol said...

Which reminds me of another song.....

Give PEACE a chance

Maybe all those kids who found a good opportunity to party the other night, need to hear these two songs. They had a chance to warm up, now they need to run with it.

Oh, Jan! Ha! (what a great idea)

How funny that John was such a good sport to model your beautiful bag for you. A great picture.

That bag is so much more beautiful than I could have imagined. I think the materials you chose were perfect.

I know your sister will love it. Are you you going there for her birthday? (or mailing it?)

I was not able to enlarge John's pic, but I was able to get a closer look (very large) of the purse on the chair. It's perfect! I could never be patient enough to create something that tedious. You're amazing.

Bin Laden story shows changing media nature
"A soldier in Afghanistan learned about the death of Osama bin Laden on Facebook. A TV producer in South Carolina got a tip from comedian Kathy Griffin on Twitter. A blues musician in Denver received an email alert from The New York Times. And a Kansas woman found out as she absently scrolled through the Internet on her smartphone while walking her dog.

In an illustration of how the information world has changed, many people learned through media formats or devices that weren't available a decade ago that the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks had been killed.

"It just kind of spread like wildfire online," said Stephen Vujevica, a student at Immaculata University in Pennsylvania. "It's amazing to see how social media played a part in it." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110503/ap_on_hi_te/us_bin_laden_media
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110503/ap_on_hi_te/us_bin_laden_media

.... no wonder it's getting so hard for the news media to get the news out fast enough. By the time they officially confirmed, it's out there

I know I shouldn't even link this story, but it was the first thing I read this morning, and it really surprised and disgusted me. What cruelty can be inflicted because of peoples beliefs and traditions. How can we ever try to communicate or negotiate or involve ourselves with people this ignorant. What will ever change them.
Despite rapid growth, India lets its girls die

jan said...

Coreen and Chloe, thanks for the kind words about the bag. This post is meant to be a filler until someone gets something else up.

The pic of John not meant to be taken seriously. I just handed it to him and said, "you are my model" and he assumed a pose that most men his age assume if they are asked to hold their wives handbags. It is not something they like to do and feel a little embarrassed so they never look natural while doing it. Too bad that our boys and men cannot feel natural doing something "female." Many women feel comfortable holding a gun for hunting ( I would not - but would not assume an strange pose).

jan said...

One story I liked about the killing of Osama was the one where they gave him a Muslim burial at sea after being sure it was him.

jan said...

Chloe, the bag is not perfect. There are some definite imperfections. The picture does not show them. But it is "good enough." This is my motto in recent years. I have been a perfectionist is years past but it takes so much energy to live like that - so I am satisfied now with "good enough."

Anonymous said...

Jan, I knew John was kidding around. That's why I thought it was a great idea that you asked him to pose. Like I said before, what a great sport he is -- and you too!

Love the pics!

ps "good enough" to you is 'perfect' to me. You did a great job on it, and everything you do seems to be done with love. That's always the most important thing.

Coreen said...

My perspective on the "muslim burial
at sea" for bin laden & the explanations that it was meant to be respectful....

That cretin & his cohorts had no respect for the thousands of Americans they incinerated at the twin towers, or who jumped
from 100 stories to their death there or those passengers who knew they were going to die as those planes crashed in DC & PA...

Don't care one bit what the muslim nations may
think about killing bin laden, he deserved not one iota of respect in any manner shape or form...and all this chatter about whether he was armed or not is a waste of breath, bin laden deserved no consideration...

The picture I put up here yesterday of the firefighters in times square said it all up...

Carol said...

Coreen knowing the kind of macho guys dealing with Binny ..I assumed the bath and wrap consisted of spit and toilet paper followed by a few spiritual words like ...burn in hell sucka.

Carol said...

And if there are any virgins waiting for him there's a good reason they still are!

Carol said...

Sorry Jan for popping your bubble.

Carol said...

There is a new drink out called a Bin Laden, 2 shots and a splash of water....ahhhhhh....

Heard that one today.

Coreen said...

I like it Carol...

Carol said...

Chloe, that was a horrible story about the female children in India. The best solution would be to change the dumb law that requires females to provide the dowries.

Coreen said...

The dustup of the day & my unsolicited opinion...

Release or not release bin laden death pics..
don't really care either way, would not go out of my way to view them, if they were out there...

but the explanation that they can't be
released because it would increase retaliation
against us is bs...does anyone really
believe that those pics tip the balance so that they will hate us more...if so, get in line for that brooklyn bridge that they have been trying to sell for years...

and as far as whether the seals killed an unarmed man...frankly, I don't give a damn if he was armed or not...he's dead, end of story...

whatever the paks are saying his 'daughter' said would be a joke if it wasn't so insulting...I have no sympathy for his kin & don't give a rat's rear what she saw or not..

which leads to the paks themselves...need to reassess this so-called ally, dumping $15 billion & counting to them & if you believe
them saying they didn't know/assist/hide bin laden...it's as honest as Louie's line from Casablanca.... "shocked, shocked, there's gambling here"....

There are some things that annoy me lots & all
this 'talk' since they took out bin laden is right at the top of the list...

Carol said...

Like I said before, the best pic to release would be Binny hiding behind his wife. I wouldn't want to see any others.

I don't see Binny as being a real Muslim and don't think real Muslims would be proud of him so I don't see the need to follow their religious protocol. I can, however, understand our government wanting to attempt to adhere to it.

Back to something more important...tonight the Idol singers will sing two songs, one modern song and one from the 60s.

Carol said...

And tonight there's a new episode of Modern Family. Don't forget to tape one Jan.

jan said...

Waiting for Idol and Modern Family. I always tape the shows just in case I miss something.

Carol said...

The judges are full of it tonight. Haley did a great job with that Gaga song even though I'd never heard of it.

Carol said...

So far I think the girls have kicked butt tonight.

Carol said...

I think I like the softer side of James better.

Carol said...

Yep, Lauren knocked that one out of the park.

Carol said...

All these kids have a singing career no matter who wins this thing. It matters not who wins!

Carol said...

I do see some of the judges trying to manipulate.

Carol said...

Haley did the best "House of the Rising Sun" I've ever heard!

Carol said...

The judges gave her a standing O!

Carol said...

And we, down here in the Swamp, know that song.
