Waiting for Jan's quilts

Look what I found in my pool today.

The hummers only get serious just before closing time.

I fix the squirrels their own bowl of special treats but nooooo that's not good enough, they want the bird food also.

Carol, I love your pictures. The hummers are amazing. I died laughing when I saw the squirrel. The squirrel looks like I have felt this week. You take some great pictures. I have not taken any pics of quilt as yet. The job is taking lots more time than I want. That will change. I will just bank these hours for a couple of weeks off later on.

I went to an all day state breast feeding task force meeting today. Sitting in a meeting all day is more tiring than anything else. It was a good meeting though. The other women (no guys) were from all over NM and worked in WIC and hospitals in state. I enjoyed it very much. We did a potluck.

Carol, do you remember the breast feeding woman I worked with close to where your mom and SF lived. I will never forget that family. I think it was your mom or stepdad who put me in touch with them. I will not forget when I would counsel her that her father in law would sit in on the discussions. He was most respectful and related what I was telling her to his cows. I have laughed about that so many times.

I had to go back to the last post and bring these above 2 comments forward.

Jan, I don't have a clue who you are talking about. Can you give me more hints?

Jeremy, wife and baby are in town visiting. I took the day off to meet them for lunch. Baby slept thru the entire lunch. I hope to catch her awake tomorrow. I would have taken pics but didn't want to scare her awake.

They spent time with SF and thought he was much better than the last time they saw him. This is the first time they have been back since the hospital abduction and our having gotten SF set up with all his help.

Carol, a while ago when I first came on there were 2 pics of hummingbirds . What happened?

Carol said...

I was trying to put some captions to some pics and screwed up so I took them off and knocked out one of the pics.

My hummers are still sucking sucrose pretty fast. I had to make another sugar run today.

Carol said...

I have five feeders out right now. I wonder how long this frensy will last. My kitchen is getting pretty sticky. I'll need to hose it down when it's over.

Carol said...

That brown sugar water is the organic sugar I bought a while back. They like it. They must be little health hummers.

Carol said...

Since I broke that rib I've been trying to keep my activity to a minimun but I'm still having to do hummer aerobics to keep those feeders full. I certainly don't want to be responsible for any of them "hitting the wall" on their journey south. (Hitting the wall is a runners terms for running out of steam from inadequate carb loading.)

Carol said...

Most of my hummers now are females. The males head south first to get their territory established before the girls get there.

Carol said...

Another interesting fact is:

"Hummingbirds are not very social at all and live very solitary lives, only coming together to mate or grudging share a hummingbird feeder. You will not see a hummingbird flock or migrate in groups. They just like to do their own thing."

Carol said...

Well Coreen, your Yanks almost caught up. What gives?

Carol said...

Jan, I hope your work is not trying to take advantage of you. That sometimes happens when you agree to work part-time. They pay you part time and work you full time.

Coreen said...

I wish I had some of those little hummers here...

Now how did mr. squirrel climb onto that bird feeder...do you give them the same food as
the birds (not the hummingbird mix)

tonite's game...Andy just didn't have good command of his fast ball...a bit troubling, but its only his 2nd game backfrom the 2 month injury layoff...he will have 1 more game to hopefully have a good outing...& as Joe Girardi said after the game...we hit 6 home runs & lost...who would think that would happen...not happy with the result, but at least they started hitting....

a typical yankee/red sox game...

Back at it again tomorrow....

meantime tampa won so they have the lead in the
division...that is something I don't like, but
we will see what we will see in the next week...

Carol said...

Coreen, squirrels are real talented and because I've been sitting outside taking hummer pics, I've had more of an opportunity to catch their acrobatic bird seed stealing. The other day, one was hanging upside down by his little toes, from that feeder, and reaching up to get a sunflower seed and then hanging back down to eat it. Silly squirrels.

Trying to catch those silly squirrels doing silly things isn't easy though. Those digital cameras have that moment delay from the time you push the button to when it takes the pic and that is just long enough to lose most of my good shots. It's not like you can anticipate when something interesting is going to happen and snap early. I have tried that.

I also use the zoom to get closer and if you even breath when you zoom, it's blurry. No, I haven't read all the directions for that camera. Sometimes when I have tried to find what I wanted to do in the directions for the camera, I still couldn't find the answer. I think they hope you will just accidentally figure it out, like your cell phone that they don't give you any or at least any decent directions for.

I'm sure the Chinese people know how to work all these things. That's where they will get us in the end. We need to rent an Asian for a couple of weeks to learn how to use our sh--. Just another way to get our money.

Most of our stuff is not made in the USA and those directions don't hold up to translation very well. I can't tell you how many times I've sat for hours trying to read directions that I can't understand and I have two Master's degrees. And I'm sure that men will tell us that's why they don't bother to read directions. But we know better, they don't even look at the pictures on a road map.

Oh, and to answer your other question, I give my squirrels everything I give the birds plus other treats like corn and raw peanuts in the shells. They also have lots of acorns out here to eat.

Yesterday, I checked into Scotty man blog, the guy who Ivy introduced us to. I read where he announced that he might be ready to look for some companionship again. His wife, that he adored, died early this year.

He admits that he is very uncomfortable with the concept of a new relationship and warns that he is a little independent, maybe inflexable, like his Scotty dogs.

I think we all get more inflexable as we get older. It's not limited to just our joints and muscles. I started that way and it doesn't get better with age. It's probably a good thing that Mr Scotty man doesn't wait too long. Having been a part of a couple for so long, did give him a lot of practice in flexability but whatever he did have will disappear real fast.

It is interesting that the comments he got from his fellow Scotty dog lovers, didn't seem to recommend he jump into anything serious. They also must share the characteristics of their Scotty dogs, a need for independence and control.

Carol said...

I just stepped outside to check out the temperature and the scream of an owl came from a branch in a tree just above my head, really close. One of those blood curdling screams. It startled me. I hope that owl is not waiting to pick off some of the hummers I've been fattening up. Do they eat hummers? They would make good little appetizers.

Coreen said...

Being lazy...the last few days here have been
warm & muggy...summer just does not want to let go...& as if we all didn't know, the local
paper today says it's official...it was the hottest summer on record...

Camera instructions...besides the less than
understandable translation, I just hate the
pictures of icons, etc that I have no idea what
they are intended to mean...that goes for
all the gadgets on phones, electronics...& especially in the car...

As far as independence vs. companionship...seems women are more adaptable
to being alone than men for the most part...

Jan, you & Carol may have more insight as to
the whys of that concept, or maybe it is not
the case, but have seen it often when a spouse
dies, if it is the wife, who goes first, the husband does seem to have a more difficult time in coping with being alone & actively searches for another companion (whether they find one is up for debate)...

Carol said...

Well, Lilo is already out of jail. So much for that judge's cred...he said fail or miss a drug test and you go to jail for 30 days. She can bail herself out of the consequences???

IMO, Lilo is determined to screw up her life. She's proved she can't meet the requirements of her probation. The breaks she is getting might force her to do something even more dangerous. Hope it doesn't result in her's or someone else's death. The court will just have to live with that even if others won't be able to.

I know poor people sitting in jail who violated their probation. Around my neck of the woods, you can't bail out of a probation violation, at least not for weeks. But we all know that the law only applies to the poor. And that there are poor people sitting in jail for doing things that are done on a much larger scale by our politicians or those they hire to work for us or those they reward with our hard earned tax dollars.

OK, OK, it's Saturday. I slipped Coreen. Throw me in jail. Nah, I'll be back there Monday.

Carol said...

And Coreen, I certainly don't know the answer to that, how long will it take for someone who loses their spouse to seek another relationship, question. My guess would be...it would depend on how dependent each was on their spouse in that relationship. The more dependent the person is, the faster a new relationship would be sought. Just a guess.

jan said...

"when a spouse
dies, if it is the wife, who goes first, the husband does seem to have a more difficult time in coping with being alone & actively searches for another companion (whether they find one is up for debate)..."

Coreen, I agree with you. My experience from my parents and parents of friends - it seems the widower is out there pretty quickly looking for another wife - and there are lots of women he can choose from. All he has to do is let friends know he is looking and attend some functions for seniors. When my mother died, my dad married 6 months later - they knew each other 3 weeks before marrying. When she died 13 years later, it took him a little longer - he dated several women then (at 83 years old) and married a year after his 2nd wife died.

jan said...

Also, I suspect whether he finds someone quickly or not depends upon his health and financial status. My dad was healthy, active and financially secure.

jan said...

Like you said Carol, if the widower is pretty independent, he may not marry again. I think the longer they are single the less likely they are to marry.

jan said...

We are in Pagosa Springs now. We will be here until tues. Just wanted to get out of "Dodge" for a few days. I relax and sleep better when we get out of town. I wonder why???

jan said...

We are watching Arkansas play Alabama. Ark 17, Ala 7- Go Hogs, Pig Sooiee! John is from Ark. and all of his family went to the Univ of AR.

Sorry Ivy! I know you are watching the game.

My team, Texas is behind UCLA 13 to 3. Sorry Texas. Hook em Horns!

Carol said...

Jan, I just saw that score and called my sports fanatic friend to ask why Alabama was losing. They are number one but she said they had a young team this year and hadn't yet been tested until today. There is still one quarter left. Anything could happen.

Carol said...

I saw that Pagosa Springs star and wondered if you guys had gotten away. Good for you!

jan said...

I still say "go HOGS"

"Jan, I don't have a clue who you are talking about. Can you give me more hints? "

Carol, We were in Grad. school in Houston - I needed a family to do a project with and I think it was your mom who found the family for me. The young mother had a new baby and was breastfeeding and having problems. This was her 2nd baby and she tried breastfeeding the first and gave up b/c of the problems. After spending time with her and observing her with her baby she was able to breastfeed successfully. I think I visited her about 4-5 times and wrote a paper on the family. I probably still have the paper somewhere.

jan said...

Yup, we are here.

Carol said...

Jan, I didn't have a clue as to the answer to that question. I was just venturing a guess. It does seem that men are more likely to get married sooner. Mom got married about 2 years after dad died. She was pretty dependent but I think she wished she hadn't been.

jan said...

Carol, I think it was because of that family, I decided to do my professional paper on breastfeeding.

jan said...

I have read that men marry sooner after divorce and being widowed b/c there are many more women "out there" than men - for those who are wanting to marry again.

Carol, I have a lot of friends in nursing who never married - work and school took too much of their time to get involved in relationships. You know me well- having a relationship was more important to me than work. When I finished my doctoral work, I did research and publishing for a few years and found that it was too much for me to devote myself to that and a relationship - so I chose the relationship. I chose not to go for tenure - as it required several publications a year and outside research funding. Besides with a PhD there was not that much difference in salary between tenure track and an education track. You were smart to go the Nurse Practitioner route. Nurse Practitioners make as much or more money than faculty with PhD's.

jan said...

Sorry Carol, I was working on my last comment - when you wrote the comment before my last one.

Do you think your mom was sorry she married your SD?

jan said...

uh oh! Ark 20, Ala 14. A good game. Go HOGS!

Carol said...

Looks like someone put some voodoo on the Yanks lately. There just might be some kind of antidote around here.

Jan, I'm still clueless about that lady with the breastfeeding problem. Was it Retha? I didn't know that many people where they lived.

jan said...

Carol, yes - it was Retha. I had forgotten her name. Thank you!

Carol said...

Mom did end up being sorry but I'm not sure exactly when she realized it. Maybe not the first few years. When someone gets married because they are needy, they are likely to make a mistake. Mom and SF were totally incompatable. I don't think either were very honest in who they really were and what they wanted. They were both needy.

Carol said...

I grew up in and was around mostly rotten relationships. That wasn't something I wanted any part of. If my soulmate would have come around, it might have been a different story.

Carol said...

Alabama is creeping up there.

jan said...

I agree about marrying out of need rather than making a rational decision and marrying when two people are compatible. I have a feeling though that it is a matter of luck when the marriage works as most marriages are made out of need or being "in love"

jan said...

Yes, Ala is creeping up there.

jan said...

S...t. Ala is ahead.

Carol said...

Rut rho.

jan said...

OK over 3 min left in the game.

jan said...

Carol, I thought you were MY friend??? LOL

jan said...

I think my dad was sorry he married his 3rd wife. They were not compatible either and fought all the time during the last 2-3 years. He knew her about 6 months before marriage.

He knew his 2nd wife 3 weeks and he always said she was the "love of his life" They were married 13 years and she died.

My dad and mother were married 49 years and 9 months - They were in love and married 49 years - but fought all my life. when I was a kid I wished they would divorce. I hated the fighting.

jan said...

Ala intercepted the pass. That's the game. Ala can just run out the clock now.

Congrats Ivy.

Carol said...

I was pulling for Arkansas Jan and darn it doesn't look good now unless they pull a Saints.

jan said...

Yup. That is all we can hope for. Thanks for rootin for the Hogs. John thanks you too. I have had to almost sit on him. We are in a hotel and he yells like he is in the stands.

Carol said...

My friend, Tomato woman, is disappointed also.

jan said...

That is the game. They are running the clock out.

Roll that Tide.

Going down to get in the mineral baths. Love that smell of sulphur.

bye for now.

Carol said...

Jan, I shouldn't have tuned in. They were ahead 20-7 until I started watching.

Carol said...

Significant drop off in hummers today. They may have all headed out for their long journey. Whew. We do have a little cool front coming next week. Lows in the upper 50s or low 60s and highs in the low 80s. That might not sound like much of a cool front to some of you but for us it will be a nice relief.

jan said...

That is what we have had the past week- so not much different.

jan said...

Carol, It is all your fault they lost LOL.

Carol said...

Hope I don't have that kind of power Jan.

Today is the five year anniversary of the day after Rita hit us. Thinking about it sends a shiver thru my spine. Thank you God for keeping those hurricanes away this year.

I hope my little hummers don't run into that storm down in Mexico. No matter what kind of kids they are, you still have to worry about them.

Carol said...

I added a pic. Guess who?

Carol said...

Swimming ain't exactly on baby's list of fun things to do yet. She cried when she got it but after a bottle, she settled down for her nap.

Carol said...

That was baby's swamp baptism. She's officially a swamp baby.

jan said...

What a pretty baby. I went back and blew up all your pictures you have on this post. The first one of the hummers is so amazing. When I blew the pic up a lot, I can even see a drop of necter on one of the hummer's beaks. Thanks for all the pictures. I also love the one of all the hummers eating peacefully together.

I am off to bed. Good night Carol.

I was only kidding about the Ark loss. You said something about they lost after you started watching- so I had to "rib" you a little. OMG, no pun intended about your cracked rib. I typed that before I thought of your rib.

How are you doing, by the way?

Carol said...

Jan, the rib doesn't pop every time I move anymore. It still hurts and limits my activity. Since you don't see me out in the boat I just fixed and the fact that I am missing out on prime Crappie catching time, you gotta know it's still a problem. It's been a reminder that I am pretty fragile, at least my chest wall is. It was a crazy way that I broke that rib.

These kind of things happen when I'm stressed, over doing it. It's like my body takes over and tries to give me a excuse to have to slow down. Only problem is that instead of being able to slow down, I just have some extra misery to have to deal with while I'm still having to do everything I had to do before. It just ends up taking away any little fun I was trying to have also.

My life seems to be surrounded with vulnerable people/things that need help. There is a limit to how many I can help. I have had to draw the line at some and I've really tried just saying no to others. That didn't work out too well.

Carol said...

Jan, I have never been a big sports fan. Like Solar I did like participating in them when I was young. I did spend a lot of time yesterday watching football because it was something that I could do without having to pay close attention. You can always catch up on the plot even if you are not watching all the time.

For several games yesterday, there were teams that were not expected to win but were winning up until the end, then it was like someone told them that they weren't suppose to win so they didn't. One was your Arkansas game and the other was the Oklahoma/Cinn game.

I also watched the LSU game. They were lucky again. Their defense keeps winning their games. Sorry, but I'm just not that passionate about LSU. Don't know why. One of our alma maters got stomped last night.

Now, I am very passionate about our Saints. The Saints are bigger than just a sport's team for me.

jan said...

Good morning everyone. I can't believe how well I slept last night. You can tell sleep is becoming a big deal for me. I think at home, there is so much for me to "take care of" and getting out of town, I forget about all that. I have to figure out a way to make that happen at home.

I love getting up and going out and soaking in the hot mineral baths. The air was crisp and cool and the water was 99-100 degrees. There are some pools that are hotter but 100 is what I like. I suppose we could get a hot tub at home, but I love the minerals in the water and believe it or not the smell is soothing. Some people don't like the sulphur smell.

jan said...

Carol, I have never been much for sports. My 2 oldest sons are big sports fan, especially the oldest one. I try to keep up with OU games - they were born in OK and their granddad was a big OU fan and so are all their cousins. I also watch Ark games with John and now I keep up with Saints games. John loves football. I have 2 grandsons who are big soccer fans - they played soccer in HS. My 2 oldest grandkids who have babies are big pro football fans - so I am surrounded by people who love sports.

Carol said...

Baby's mom posted something last night and it's not here today. They saw it on the blog last night but it disappeared. We don't understand why.

jan said...

Carol, You must be careful. Your body is more fragile than it looks. My sister also can crack a rib at the drop of a hat.

jan said...

I hope they try again. I would like to see more pics of baby Lauren.

jan said...

Lauren looks like she is enjoying the water. Is she asleep or just very relaxed?

jan said...

Is tomato woman from ARkansas?

Carol said...

I love getting in a hot tub or mineral bath when it's cold and crisp outside but I don't like that sulphur smell at all. I'm glad you got a good night's sleep.

Carol said...

I do enjoy watching sports must more when you can share the experience with someone. It's a social thing.

Carol said...

Tomato woman was born in Miss and raised in Atlanta but lived here more of her life.

Carol said...

Tomato woman was probably pulling for Arkansas because she doesn't like Alabama. Most likely still pissed at their coach for deserting LSU. She doesn't care for LSU's current coach.

Coreen said...

It seems to have been well worth getting your
pool spruced up Carol...nice family pic enjoying it...

Before I forget...Drew Brees on 60 Minutes tonight Carol...

Another day, another game...any combination of
3 will determine if my guys are in the playoffs...after losing 4 in a row, tonight becomes important...& it may be raining at game time in the Stadium...

Good for you Jan...we all deserve to enjoy our
'me' time....

College football not a biggie for me...nor really is pro football...but let's see who do we get to see here today...Giants, Jets, Patriots, Eagles, Colts games...

Carol said...

Coreen, what happened to the Yanks? Got any clues?

Carol said...

I can't get a real feel from the stick game.

Carol said...

Well, we got a TD in the first two minutes Coreen. Lance Moore is taking Reggie's place and he had a punt return that almost made it into the endzone. Makes me feel a little better.

I guess they don't show the Saints in your neck of the woods?

Carol said...

7-7 now.

Carol said...

Lance Moore does it again with a touchdown pass. He's the star today. 14-7.

Carol said...

Brees is making some dumb mistakes. Just threw another pass interception.

Carol said...

Overtime.

Carol said...

Atlanta won the toss. First team that scores, sudden death.

Carol said...

We had a simple 29 yard field goal to win and noooooo. The jail called and said one of the inmates was having chest pain. I told them to tell him to stop watching the game because I was also.

Carol said...

This was killer. Atlanta won.

Carol said...

And I'm just glad it's over. I couldn't take another moment.

jan said...

Sorry I missed the game. could not find it here :(

Solar said...

Carol,

Glad that your are doing a lot better with your sore ribs....Im adjusting to my new life ok...I do miss my big back yard that I used to go and lie down next to the biggest trees in the hood...they helped me connect with Mother nature.......

There are many advantages of not living in a house, specially not doing the yard work....it was a lot to keep up with for me sometimes...and also with the neighbors....

I still go and do all the yard work for Mary....sometime she doesn't even know that im around....but when she is awake....she asks me for her kiss on the forehead....I make her laugh cos I ask her to move over, and she can have her way with me.......then she seems to wonder, and asks who I am.......

I will continue to do her grass as long as she lives.....since her family doesn't care to do it.....think that they are just waiting.......

I also make her laugh by whispering in her ear ( a care giver ) we going to keep fooling em a-girly.......she loves it when we dance......I put on some mu sic on her radio....and take her arms and move them around......the other day it was so nice.....that I asked for some coffee, and cookies......I asked to have them put in the back yard.....
.....we had coffee and cookies......and she was in "heaven"...told her that I didn't think so....cos I would never be allowed even near that joint.....she did not last too long, and I put her back onto her bed fast asleep.....

Sorry Im not talking about what U all have been posting.....way to much that I have missed out on....so just letting you know a little of what im doing.....working a few nights per wk as a trk driver with a friend that ownes a truking corp.......my cdl came in handy.....

Judy and I are now all settled into our new life...we adjusted very well since both of us made this decision jointly, and believe it to be the best way to not always depend on the economy,.....

(I decided to use my 22 years of of equity, and replace my 401k loss with it.....now I don't have to worry about retirement that much...and won't hang on to my home no matter what) that I don't see being as it was for a long, long time.....I have advised a cpl of other people to do the same....be realistic about their situation, and don't wait for the banks to take them to court....they will never keep their homes, and will ruin their credit.....hard choice, but they won't go away....waiting for some thing to happen....construction people are not doing so well around here: Very sporadic........

Will check and see what you are all up to in a cpl of days....

ps.....Im amazed at all the junk that I acquired in 25 years.....all of had some future use......I had a one month garage, house, and yard sale....sold almost all of it...gave a lot away to young people that were starting out......did not tell Judy :-) but she probably knows....and won't let me know....that she knows....I hate when she does that......U know>>>>later

Solar said...

Forgot,

The movie "Moon-struck" is on right now on wgn.....Did any of you see "Cosmos Moon" the other night......real, real bright no?

Carol said...

If you can lay down in your yard Solar, you must not have any fire ants up there. I'm glad to hear you guys are settling in. As we get older, kids moved on, we need much less space. I'm glad to have my little house occupied and where I live here is not big but almost bigger than I would like.

Carol said...

Yes, I did enjoy that moon.

jan said...

Hi Solar, I too am glad to hear u are adjusting to new surroundings. I have done that many times in my life and will again, I am sure. Sometimes it is too much to read all the comments. It is just good to hear from you.

jan said...

John and I went to local supermarket deli and bought one individual meal and veggie salad- heated our meal in microwave in room and ate in. Was much better than going out to eat. We are finding in past year that eating smaller portions is so much more comfortable and better for us. Both of us took long naps this afternoon.

jan said...

The moon was amazing.

jan said...

John is tired of football - TG.

Carol said...

Coreen, glad your Yanks got out of that series with a win. They were on ESPN last night and I got to watch them before and after Swamp People. SP is programmed to come one every Sunday. I'm not sure I was totally awake for that last score but I was when it was tied up and going into overtime. Did you make the entire game. It started later than usual.

Carol said...

Ya'll have a nice day. It's cool outside this morning. I almost felt cold. It's in the 60s.

Coreen said...

Cool, damp, rainy here today...but I don't feel
cold!...

Yes, I did see the Yankees manage to win last night & yes while it may not have been the most important game so far, it was pretty close....another game tonite in Toronto, 6 left, they win 1 or Sox lose 1 & they are in the playoffs...only to be determined whether they win the division or are wildcard...

Sorry about your team Carol...but better to have the first loss sooner than later, when
the talk always goes about the possible perfect
season...nips it in the bud...

Solar, I too had the opportunity to see the
'cosmo moon' last week...& Moonstruck is in my top 3 favorite movies...it's #2 all time...

Glad you landed again, even if only for a flash...& feel that your decisions were the right move at this time...hoping it will all turn around for you in the not too distant future...

I had to go dig out my light warm ups this afternoon. I was pretty cool this morning. I think our high only hit 81 today, just perfect. It will be in the 50s in the morning.

Something interesting I heard today. The Repubs want to or maybe have already blocked the commission from being able to subpoena the BP people to get the truth about the oil spill. They would rather they just volunter the info if they wanna.

Do people listen to this stuff? Not many. I can't believe these politicians can actually say this stuff out loud and aren't impeached.

Coreen said...

If you were here you'd be looking for heat & a fake fur coat!...raining, chilly & by the end of the week only in the 60s...but I can deal

About your BP subpoena story...seems that incident occurred at the beginning of July, when SC Sen Demint (he who champions O'Donnell)
initally blocked the bill, but according to Washington Post...it was immediately unblocked
& Repub. say no opposition to the presidential
commission having subpoena power to call BP...

I have no love for Repubs. or Dems at this point, but whoever was spreading the story as
a current event, apparently is leaving out the
'rest of the story'...too much misleading information being pushed by all sides that gets repeated as gospel, need to keep it real....

Here's the WAPO story from July 1 about the
matter.

Though never recognized for their contribution & valor...a US Air Force colonel launched a campaign to do so...some of their names will be
'stars' on aeronautical maps of the route used by all air traffice between New Zealand & McMurdo Station....

& the irony in the last paragraph of the story...dogs are now banned from Antartica because it was found they spread distemper to seals... but their valiant lives made it possible to reach the South Pole so long ago...
Polar sidekicks earn a place on the map

Carol said...

I saw a program on some channel the other night that said that humans couldn't have accomplished many things without the help of dogs.

Coreen said...

Chris Mathews...it figures...am guessing, but
he failed to give the full story that in the
end it was a dumb dustup that was meaningless??!!!....

That's why I don't watch msnbc any longer...they are so distorted...but that may
soon come to a screeching halt when Comcast
finishes the purchase of NBC et al from GE....
Jeff Zucker long time NBC president was just
fired...so it will be interesting to see what
falls out in another year....

Here's a poll of cable TV watching habits...

As if we didn't know...more people get their news about politics from cable TV & more particularly form Fox News...42% Fox, 30% CNN,
12% MSNBC...

And surprise surprise...Bill O was the most
popular, while Rachel & that bozo Shultz are
like invisible...so is Olberman...

Bill O'Reilly is popular, but Rachel Maddow is unknown to likely voters

Carol said...

The popularity of Fox News is why the public is so screwed up, brainwashed and misinformed. I have watched them occasionally because you must keep up with the enemy.

I prefer the news from the Daily Show, Colbert and C2C but you need to also see what the MSM has to say to really appreciate the others.

OK time to get serious....DWTS.

Coreen said...

And would you believe my Yankees are behind 6 to 0 in Toronto...with AJ Burnett, the pitcher
we got from them for lots of $$$$ because he
used to beat the Yankees & he has been so very
bad...he of the completely tatooed arms (I lloath tatooed bodies)....

Carol said...

I can already tell that Bristol is still tense and uncomfortable.

Carol said...

I agree about tattoos. Maybe if they could wash it off.

I was reading about the Yanks vs Jays today.

Carol said...

Rick was a little stiff, but so dang cute.

Coreen said...

He was not bad at all Carol...though I have no idea who he is/was...& he is all yours....

My kind of guy...the 2 new actors from 5-0 (McGarrett & Danno)...no idea who they are but I really like the way they compliment each other...

Carol said...

Quick step for a tall lanky person has to be a lot faster than for a short person.

Carol said...

You can yours later tonight.

Carol said...

Suppose to be, you can see yours later tonight.

Carol said...

The fact that Florence survived that dance was a miracle.

Carol said...

I thought she did very well.

Carol said...

Jan, are you still hot springing it??

Carol said...

I guess you don't get to see this show until later.

Carol said...

Yanks picked up 2. It's still early.

Coreen said...

I like the quick step as a competitive dance,
& Florence did a very nice job of it...

Brandy doing the jive was just ok...

Coreen said...

Oh I kind of remember Jan saying they would be
back home on Tuesday...

Carol said...

I don't think she and Max have the right chemistry.

Carol said...

I didn't like her dance either.

Carol said...

Well Michael didn't have to move much. Probably a good thing.

Carol said...

good job for her.

Coreen said...

Audrina is the dark horse...good quick step...

Michael, he seems stiff & plodding...don't see
how he makes it much farther...but he is Michael Bolton, lots of ladies do like him...&
he may still live in Westport...grew up in New Haven..

I think his mom & daughters were in the audience...& I swear I saw a woman in leather with glasses that resembled Sarah Palin...but maybe just a look alike...did you by any chance catch that earlier...

Carol said...

I think Sarah is suppose to be there tonight.

Carol said...

Yep, Jennifer is good.

Carol said...

Told ya.

Carol said...

I think that maybe who some were booing for.

Carol said...

Sarah, that is.

Carol said...

Jennifer mentioned that she heard booing. I hope people will not bring politics into the DWTS. Sarah, tonight, is just a mom watching her kid compete.

Carol said...

I hope Cho does well. Ya know, ugly duckling thing.

Coreen said...

I've been locked out...

Coreen said...

Jennifer is still the best..Derek is just a superb dancer & choreographer...

If not boos, Sarah did not get the type of reception she gets at those rallies...

Cho was beter than that awful thing last week...she tried hard & completed the jive ok...

Carol said...

Cho, big improvement from last week.

Carol said...

I do love Kyle. That's not easy for a heavy set guy.

Carol said...

I bet the kid loses some weight by the end of this contest. Guys can lose weight pretty fast with that kind of activity. Also less time for those burgers and fries.

Carol said...

Yanks are holding um and catching up. Hope they keep it up.

Carol said...

I didn't vote last week but will tonight.

Carol said...

Much better tonight.

Carol said...

For football player, that is.

Coreen said...

I like the quarterback...who would expect that
from him...

Carol said...

Like basketball player better.

Carol said...

Still don't care for The Situation

Carol said...

He was more humble this week.

Coreen said...

thought the jersey shore guy improved quite
a bit...but of all the guys, the 2 athletes
have the best dance ability...which is a bit of
a surprise...they are much bigger than the pro men dancers...you would think they would be
clumsy...

Carol said...

And appeared to have really tried hard.

Carol said...

I think that chunky Kyle is the best of the guys. So do the judges. I think he got the best scores of the guys.

Coreen said...

Yankees just lost...

Bristol did very well with the quick step...

Carol said...

Bristol is so self conscious still. She is still stiff.

Coreen said...

The chubby guy would have to get more control of the routines..lots of energy but a bit too
wild...dancing with abandon.....

Carol said...

I did my duty. I voted. You have 30 minutes.

Carol said...

Tonight I wanted to check out Lawrence O'Donnell's new program while ironing. I really don't like the guy but wanted to check him out anyway. And he is going to have on Biden.

He's announced that he is going to have on Levi Johnston this week. You lose cred with me when you are going to waste news time with a dork whose only claim to fame is that he knocked up an x-vice pres candidate's daughter. Give me a break. I'm sure there is something more important that he could cover or someone more important that he could interview.

Carol said...

This morning I heard the explanation of the booing last night. It was because of the scores given to Jennifer. The crowd thought she deserved higher scores. It did occur right after the judges put up the scores.

Carol said...

There is some serious sh-- going on in this country. Some of the headlines on Huff Post point to it. The middle class is shrinking and special interest is buying public policy. Those are probably the two most scary things going on.

The Repubs pretty much had the above all totally sewed up. The Dems couldn't fix it in less than two years, some weren't even trying. They would have a little problem fixing the above considering they also need money to run for office and you have to cater to the beasts to get that money. Even the Supremes helped to see to it that the beasts have the power to influence. Repubs saw to that also.

A lot of people can't understand this and think we need to put the Repubs back. I really don't know if the Dems can even fix the mess, even want to, but I can understand that a disaster can't be cleaned up in less than two years.

What's even scarier is that it is some of the most vulnerable people who are being suckered by the Repubs. The Repubs have convinced many of them that they need to cut off the only limb they have left holding them up. Desparation will make many of them jump from the frying pan into the fire. Hope I'm wrong.

jan said...

Hi folks, I have been reading but have no comment - do not agree nor disagree - just like to see what you are saying. Wish I could become more interested in politics and could make some comments here but cannot seem to make myself.

I only saw the last 30 minutes of DWTS. We were out soaking in the wonderful smelly waters here. We will see the reruns tonight. I did see Bristol dance. I don't care for her mother's politics but I want Bristol to do well - I would like to see her become her own person apart from mom and ex.

jan said...

We leave for home today. It has been a nice get-away. I have surely caught up on sleep. Another plus is that John and I are so compatible away from home and family and stresses of everyday life. I want to "bottle" all of this and take it home with me.

jan said...

bye for now. Back again tonight and watching DWTS. I did read and enjoy all your comments about the other dancers. I wonder how they "pair" the stars and pros. I think it is not fair that Derek gets the most promising women dancers. They should spread that around. I do love Derek. There is no doubt that he is the best dancer and choreographer. Maybe that is how they keep him - but doesn't seem fair to the rest of the pros.

Carol said...

Life ain't fair Jan but I do agree.

Don't apologize for hating politics. I
do too now but I'm a glutton for punishment.

Suggestion for other problem.
Get a hot tub, a stench candle and pretend you're not at home. Might then sleep like a baby.

jan said...

Carol, you and I might be the only people left who iron.

LOL the suggestion - We have talked about a hot tub. Both sons here have hot tubs and have had multiple problems with them. I am investigating all the places that have the hot springs- I have heard of several. I think what makes a difference for me is -getting out of town- every couple of months. I have heard of a hot springs about 100 miles from here in a place called "Ojo Caliente" It is supposed to be good too. We could do just one overnight there. The drive there is beautiful too. It is actually on the way to Pagosa Springs which is 200 miles.

jan said...

Sarah Palin is getting lots of free advertising b/c of Bristol's dancing.

jan said...

I actually like Sarah - just not her politics and I sure don't want her as my elected official of "anything."

jan said...

We had an interesting drive home. I found another route on the map - a dangerous thing. It was through the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. It looked like the road was good (on the map) except for a few miles of dotted lines on the map. Don't trust dotted lines on a map. The road was not paved for 16 miles through country that had no signs of inhabitation. We did cross over a small dam - unpaved one lane road over a gorgeous lake. Yikes! John has forgiven me. We are home safe and sound. We will stick to the tried and true map we got over the internet from now on.

Carol said...

Jan, your story sounds like the beginning plot from some of the scary movies I've seen in the past. (can't handle them in my old age)

Ya know, the couple heads out on a road trip, takes the wrong turn, the road runs out and.......(play theme song from Deliverance here). Of course you weren't in canoes so maybe that song isn't appropriate. Yes, just stick to the main road or bring an oozie and survival gear.

Carol said...

Jan, I wish you could watch DWTS at the same time we do. Then we could do live blogging, which Coreen and I already do, but you could join us. It's fun to be a judge.

Coreen and I don't always see eye to eye. I don't mind that. I love a good debate and as a lawyer, Coreen ought to be used to it.

ET just confirmed that the booing last night was due to Jennifer's scores. I'm glad it wasn't directed toward Sarah. I wouldn't think that that audience would do that to one of the dancer's moms.

Carol said...

Who do you think will get the boot tonight??? I'm picking Bolton unless he gets a pity or I really like his music vote.

Bruno has gotten some flack for his mean comments about Bolton's dance last night. Bolton may even get some pity votes because of that. Bruno certainly could have been a little less vicious.

Carol said...

Some of the people dancing on DWTS are being pretty good sports by just coming on the program and giving that difficult dancing a whirl.

Coreen said...

Jan your roadwarrior adventure across the
dirt road made me smile...out in the middle of
nowhere...which way to go...maybe those gps
units are worthwhile...though my car does not
have one...

Coreen said...

You are correct Carol...just the fact that the celebs get out there & dance those difficult
routines is a big plus...

Who leaves? the obvious choice would seem to be Michael Bolton...but you never know...who else is in the bottom....

Coreen said...

And I still like 5-0, the actor who plays Danno
is James Caan son...& the lead playing Steve McGarrett is the actor who played a vampire
detective in a short-lived series Moonlight...
only made it 1 season...

And Yankees are ahead 3 to 1 after 5...I sure hope they end this with a win & a playoff spot
already...

Carol said...

I with ya on the Yanks win Coreen. I'm looking forward to the playoffs and unless I've got a team I care about in it, it won't be any fun and I won't watch. I don't just watch sports for sport's sake like real sport's fans do. I have to have a dog in the race.

Carol said...

Place Celebrity Score Percentage

Carol said...

Did ya notice that my little Kyle is on top in the men's group. Told ya.

Carol said...

He's a little dancing dude!

Carol said...

I wouldn't have scored Bristol that high. I did give her a vote and she did alright but I think having her mom there gave her a bump.

Carol said...

Read more: http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/09/28/survey-atheists-know-more-about-religion-than-believers/#ixzz10sMEESdl

Actually it makes sense. Solar might find that amusing.

Carol said...

Brandy and Max are totally incompatable. My opinion.

Carol said...

Coreen, you might be in store for some more rain from the next tropical storm. Just rain. Hope it helps your leaves to turn. We are waiting for your autumn pics.

Coreen said...

Drum roll.....who goes, who stays...

Coreen said...

No surprise....

Yes Carol, lots of rain for Thursday, as for
leaves changing colors...so far lots of leaves
have turned brown & fallen off...usually peak
color change is around Columbus Day to the 15th...will have to see what develops...

Coreen said...

And they are in the playoffs...

Carol said...

Right on.

Carol said...

Are the playoffs televised everywhere Coreen or am I still stuck with the stick people game?

Coreen said...

The playoffs are on TV everywhere as far as I know, so no more stick people!!....

I think the 1st game is next Wednesday...right now the YES is in the clubhouse where they are doing the champagne on the head routine...dumb as far as I am concerned...but they did play much better tonite...sense of relief...will be their 15th postseason appearance in the last 16 years...

still to be determined if they are wildcard or
division winner...they will play either the twinkies or the rangers...

Carol said...

There's a team called the twinkies??

Carol said...

You're talking to a rookie here Coreen. Don't pull my leg.

Coreen said...

minn. twins..aka twinkies... but not by their fans I'm sure...

Coreen said...

Oh & before I call it a night, Jan, I have 2 friends & myself who actually iron clothes...I wear very little 'wash, dry & wear'...don't really believe that clothes don't need to be
ironed...at least those you wear outside the
home....it may be a generational thing...seems
most people now want clothes they just put on
w/o the slightest effort...

Thank you for letting us bring lauren out to the pool She really enjoyed it. We look forward to spending more time with you on our next trip or if you decide to come and see us in Chicago.

Love,

Carol, Here is what Steph wrote. I found it under the post of Gloria when yall went to Cameron.

Carol said...

I'm glad you solved that mystery Mary. Your welcome Steph et al.

Solar said...

Carol,

First of all, Atheist actually do some studying on the subject.....and with all the sciences coming together...there is no question of how things all started...

but im not surprised that religious people can't answer most questions about faith....I know more than most theologians think they know......

I bet that I can come up with all of your ages.....by asking how many times that you would like to eat chocolate during the week.!!

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

Don't tell me your age; you'd probably lie anyway-but the Hershey Man will know!

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

This is pretty neat.
DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute ...
Work this out as you read ...
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!
This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1760 ..
If you haven't, add 1759..

6... Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number
(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

Hi Carol & Coreen, thank you both for responding to our trip home. LOL Coreen, we have a GPS system in the car and both forgot about it. I was following the map but for a short while I wondered if we had wandered off the highway we were on. Oh well.

Carol, LOL the oozie. I have never owned a gun. I have a great respect for them. I was on the wrong end of one once and that put the fear of
God in me.

jan said...

I did not read your comments C&C until this morning about DWTS. I too love Kyle. He is my fav guy dancer - actually he may be my fav dancer. I have never cared for Max. I think he is a hindrance to the women dancers he work with. I don't like his personality. It is supposed to be about the celebrities and he makes it about him. Again, this is my opinion.

I too was glad they decided the booing was about Jennifer's scores and not about Sarah. That would have been most uncool of the audience.

jan said...

I'll be darned Solar, It works. But still not telling my age.

Solar said...

Jan,

Ask Chloe...I do magic....I know it ......I am Solar.!......I like read about your travel adventures.....

Coreen,

Thanks, I do think that I made the right decision regarding my house......I has now been almost two years since I have helped a friend with his mortgagor foreclosure...

He tells me that he should have done the same thing...I still don't see any fix for the economy for a long time...

I feel fine about it.....I am working on something that looks pretty good now....but will not count my turkeys yet....

Elizabeth Warren.....great news....now lets see if she can act independently.......
