Remember....

Today, Saturday September 11, 2010, is a beautiful late-summer day here in Connecticut, with a clear blue sky overhead, just as it was nine years ago....

Every year since that day nine years ago, the Easton volunteer firefighters have placed these flags on the green in front of the firehouse & across from the volunteer EMT in memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001....

It is displayed for just one day, it appears in the morning each September 11 and is gone the next morning....

Thank you Coreen for putting up this post today. I had this feeling that you would do something today. I was waiting.

Coreen said...

It is a beautiful day here...& as has been done for the last 8 years, on the green in front of our firehouse, each September 11, the
firefighters place this memorial....

The events nine years ago are brought home
each year in this area, since CT is very much
associated with what happens in NYC...all NY
TV stations here are showing the 9/11 memorial ceremony, the reading of the names of those who perished, since early this morning....

Not sure if any of this is relevant to those
beyond the areas impacted by the events of September 11, 2001...but I had to stop this morning & take these pictures to share..

It is significant for all of us Coreen. We are one. Just as you all felt the pain of Katrina even though we are far away. You all cried for us and we for you.

That day changed how I felt about my safety and security. I never take it for granted anymore.

Coreen said...

I know how you feel about this Carol...I see this display each year & this a.m. went
down to the center to snap these before the day was done & the memorial was removed....

There was a nice breeze blowing keeping all the flags open...you can't miss this driving in & out of our town, since the road is one of
the main ones to go anythere....

Now I will get some chores done...

In fact it is what started my obsession with watching cable news 24/7. I didn't even turn it off when I went to bed. I didn't watch any comedies, fun shows or much of anything else except an occasional educational program. That only changed when I moved out to the camp. That's when I finally broke that addiction. It did have a profound effect on me.

I saw a little of this show on Dr. Phil yesterday. They had on this firefighter who was there, survived and saw all the hell day after day. His life has totally been destroyed by that day. His family wanted him back and Dr Phil is going to try to help get him back.

Carol said...

I'm not that crazy about Dr. Phil but I do hope he can help that guy to get his life back.

Carol said...

I've got to head out also. I posted this on the other post. I moved it here.

Ya know I wondered how that high pro low carb diet could be so healthy. It is also usually high fat. I did see it being very effective in weight loss and in reducing Bp and cholesterol but I still couldn't see how eliminating many fruits and veggies could be healthy. We might be seeing that now.

"A major study was just published in the Annals of Internal Medicine from Harvard. In approximately 85,000 women who were followed for 26 years and 45,000 men who were followed for 20 years, researchers found that all-cause mortality rates were increased in both men and women who were eating a low-carbohydrate Atkins diet based on animal protein."

Another extraordinarily beautiful day...

going through my NYT, saw an article about
the 2 beams of blue light that have become an
annual symbol of the loss of the Twin Towers...
I have not seen the pillars of light in person,
but each year on all the local, live NYC TV newscasts, they will at some point show
the beams of light...which are mysterious, soothing & a simple but beautiful tribute....

And like my town's firefighters' tribute it is
only for one night only....dusk to dawn the beams are kept lit...

Don't know if elsewhere this is something that
is mentioned as part of the remembrance....
Tribute in Light

Thank you Coreen for this post and beautiful pictures. We are having a beautiful day here in NM too but it is overshadowed by the events in NY, DC and other places in the US. John's brother's sister was in the Pentagon on 9/11. She was preparing for consulate work. I will not forget that day. I had just begun a new job in OK. I so well remember the horror and the uncertainty of what might be happening.

Carol said...

I'm gonna try to drop a line here. You can fish from many different places:

ROLL TIDE!

Carol said...

Those blue beams are beautiful Coreen. They only light them on Sept 11?

Carol said...

I finished all my chores but boatman still has baby out. He's probably having his way with her.

Carol said...

My boat made it home and he had his way with her alright. He went flying thru this short cut and broke the fin off the bottom of my brand new motor. Has to have the entire bottom unit replaced. Only three hours of water time. That was wreckless. Why are men such idiots. It's a little cut that connects a bay with the river and you have to go thru it very slowly because of roots and stumps on the bottom not fly thru it.

He is going to get the part replaced and she will still run but I'm pissed!

Coreen said...

Ouch Carol, sorry to hear your news...and the answer to your question is...because they are men...

How costly will the repair be & how long to fix it & get it back to you....

And yes, the twin blue light beams are only
lit for one night, dusk to dawn on September 11...

Carol said...

It's the fin that is part of the lower unit. It is all cast as one piece so the entire lower unit will have to be replaced. I can't believe that the fin broke off. He had to hit that stump at a high rate of speed.

The boat will still work tomorrow. I won't be running fast since I'm still breaking in the motor. We'll take it in next week. I don't have a clue how much it will cost but he has to pay for it. Maybe that will make him more careful. Some guys are like bulls in a china shop. Some are careful.

Now I know why he talked me into getting a stainless steel prop. He said the aluminum props are wimpy. It came with an aluminum prop. I had an aluminum prop on my other motor for 18 years and nary a dent in it.

Carol said...

I just hope he took that gremlin home with him.

Carol said...

Alabama 17, Penn State zip.

Carol said...

Ya know, I hadn't even been out in the boat since she got that new motor. It reminds me when I got my very first new car. I let mom drive it home and while she was stopped to make a turn, this old lady ran a stop sign, slammed into a Cadillac and that car slammed into my car. First new care wrecked before I got it home.

Coreen said...

Just guessing is the boat made of fibreglas or
like material & is the SS prop (which I am
guessing is the engine/motor propeller?)dented/damaged....

Will running it do more damage or cause you
to get stuck out there?...by the way, you do
bring phone or some type radio to call in if
you should run into a problem, don't you...

The Yankees are playing Texas again tonite, after losing to them in 13 last nite at about
1 a.m (5 hr+ game)....the NY announcers are complaining how hot & unpleasant it has been...
They now have just a 1 game lead on Tampa, so if they should not win tonite, would be tied...& they go to play Tampa after Texas...& they already have shown Pres. Bush & Laura Bush at the game in a box seat (outside, not in an ac box)...everyone looks like they are sweaty....

Carol said...

Coreen, it's been July/Aug hot down here this week. Awful. Even my SF, who doesn't mind the heat, was complaining today.

No, that is a cast metal for the motor housing. Fiberglass wouldn't hold up on a boat motor. The motor cover is probably some kind of fiberglass.

And I bring my phone even if I'm just outside walking. Remember I'm on call 24/7. Had 16 calls today. I would never go out in the boat without a phone. I have all my boat rescue peeps on speed dial.

Carol said...

Yiks, I didn't realize the Yanks only had a one game lead. They better win tonight.

Carol said...

That heat won't help them.

Carol said...

Coreen, I have some Holy Water, Mary brought me from Mexico, at my house. I think I need to go get it and sprinkle it over my boat. Or take my little angel that's hanging here in my den out with me tomorrow.

Coreen said...

I know I don't have to say it...but I will...
be careful out there...still concerned that the
damage could cause you problems while out there...are you planning to have someone go out with you, hopefully...

It's turning out to be a long nite again...the
game is tied in the 4th...agonizingly slow pace..maybe the heat there...

Carol said...

I'm going alone Coreen but it's a Sunday, I won't exactly be alone out there.

Carol said...

What is really disturbing me is that my boatman is suppose to be both boat and river savvy and what he did today I might expect from some careless teenager.

Carol said...

I found out that the broken part is called a skeg, not a fin. I just googled it and it is not that important in smaller motors except to protect the propeller. It's still going to be replaced and I'll probably get stuck paying for it myself since boatman lives from paycheck to paycheck.

Carol said...

Looking pretty scary for your Yanks right now Coreen.

Carol said...

I take it y'all have all heard about that horrible explosion of the underground pipeline in a San Francisco neighborhood that killed six, injurer 60 and wiped out a portion of the neighborhood. This morning I saw a map on CNN of those underground pipelines. I googled and found a copy of that map. Yuk.

U.S. Natural Gas Pipeline Network, 2009

Where I live, I'm just one spark away from total annihilation. And I'm concerned about a little broken skeg on a boat motor.

Carol said...

Sorry about your Yanks last night Coreen. Yesterday turned out to be a pretty crappy day. I was hoping for crappie this weekend and all I got was crappy.

Coreen said...

Starting out chilly, damp & overcast & maybe rain finally...have not seen any appreciable rain in at least 2 weeks...

It was another not good night for my team...Mo
was human last night...but today they will get out & play again, hopefully avoiding a sweep,
which I am not sure but I don't think that has
happened this year...

Hope if you get out in your boat Carol, that
it starts & you have success today, to end the
weekend...

Coreen said...

Jan, hope you are having some success with your quilting projects...& I will also be looking forward to seeing them...

Your thoughts about the 9/11 events & how it
personally affected you & yours were similar
to those of friends who had loved ones in NYC that day...

jan said...

Coreen, I too am sorry about your Yankee's loss. John had football games on all day yesterday. I am footballed out.

The quilt is coming along nicely. I will be finishing it this week. I have spent lots of time on it. This one is for 13 y/o GD in AR - the one who visited us in June. She brought some great t-shirts - almost all with colorful pics on them so it has been a fun quilt to make. Interest thing, one of the t-shirts is black with green lettering and a little shamrock on it. A really cute t-shirt that says "Drink until he's Cute" I debated whether to put that one in her quilt. It seemed a little "racy" for someone her age - I opted not to put it in the quilt, but will make her a pillow out of it.

jan said...

"I was hoping for crappie this weekend and all I got was crappy."

Carol, great play on words. LOL.

jan said...

We are having beautiful weather here. Mornings are wonderful - so cool and afternoons are in lo to hi 80's. I keep windows open until about 3 pm and then turn on ac for evening. I don't like to be hot. We are in "layering" weather (clothes that is). Layers in morn and shedding them as afternoon comes.

Carol said...

Well, I took baby out today. She ran OK but I couldn't get her to plane out. I wonder if they have a propeller with the correct pitch for the boat. I trimmed every which way but I couldn't get her nose down as much as it should be. I couldn't open her up because I'm still breaking her in. Oh, yeah, she's already broken. I'm still seething about that. Boatman called twice today but I couldn't even talk to him. Not ready.

I didn't do much fishing but when I did, I lost several fish. One because the line on one of my rods broke. It was a little dry rotted from sitting up waiting. I'm also a little uncoordinated with my fishing activities. I had 6 rods, an ice chest, two bags full of fishing gear, a minnow bucket with aereator, etc.

I almost took a swim a couple of times dancing around the boat trying not to step on all the gear I had aboard. I came dangerously close to one of those large hornets nests that hang in the trees along the bank but I made it home unscathed.

It was hotter than a witches tit out there. 98 with a heat index of 109, not my kind of fishing weather. I was completely drained by 11:30. I came back in and took a nap.

Here's one of my stops.

Pic kinda reminds ya of Swamp people doesn't it. I kept looking for a gator rolling in the cypress knees.

Thank for the remembrance post, Coreen. It is indeed relevant to us. My niece and her husband survived the Twin Towers, but a long-time friend and colleague of Hubs' did not. Connections to the tragedy were nationwide and world-wide, and we will never forget.

jan said...

Great picture Carol. It would make a good screen saver.

Hi Ivy, good to see ya!

jan said...

Carol, sorry about your fishing day, but you got out there and did it - Kudos to you. We have had a quiet Sunday, John went to church, I walked 2 miles then went to univ pool for a swim. We went to Costco and bought a roasted chicken for dinner. Good Sunday.

jan said...

Carol, I did it. On my computer, instead of a right click with a mouse, you click on the pad with 2 fingers - when I did that, a message came up "use image as desktop picture" I did that. I love your river scene. THANK YOU!

Carol said...

Jan, that wasn't a very good pic but it was one that I could take when I wasn't wrapped up in a half dozen fishing lines. I'll find you some better pics later.

We had a storm come thru that woke me from my nap. I just had the boat tied up at the wharf and was hoping I didn't top off my boat crises with my boat coming untied and floating down the river. It didn't. When the storm passed I took her out one more time before I put her to bed. The temp did drop from 98 to 79 which was nice.

Even though I didn't get much good fishing in, I did get the hang of operating my new toys. Good thing no one was videoing it.

Carol said...

Hi Ivy. Hope everything is good with you. Congrats on your Alabama win.

Coreen, sorry again re: those Yanks but it will be exciting to see them come back again. They will.

Coreen said...

About that pic Carol...maybe 'swamp thing'...

glad you managed to get your boat test ride in today...

pretty big series in Tampa tomorrow for
3 games...makes it interesting, then still 4 more with Tampa at the Stadium...but remember
I mentioned that likely both Yankees & Tampa
will be in the playoffs...just which is division winner & wild card...

Coreen said...

Jan, I gather that John likes college football..does he also like the pros...here college sports is not really a big deal as it
is in other parts of the country...pro teams
are the important ones for the most part (in any sport)....

Coreen said...

Hi Ivy, glad to see you pop in...I think you
know that everyone misses your input...

By the way, if you are still watching True Blood I managed to watch the season finale...have to say I thought it was campy, funny...& the ending was well...I just shook my head & laughed...

Carol said...

Saw an alli on my way to work this AM. He was cruising down the river. Better call Troy.

Checked on cost to replace
lower unit housing on motor. 650 bucks if nothing else is damaged. Did finally talk with boatman today. Told him I was as distressed
about my loss of trust in him as I
was the damage to my new toy. Guys it
wasn't just an accident. It was wrecklessness. An accident I could handle.

I do have issues with trust and this didn't help.

Carol said...

Hey Coreen, I just looked at the MLB standings and as of today, they still list the Yankees as having one win over Tampa.

They play Tampa tonight. I guess it will be back to monitoring stick figure bb again.

Carol said...

I've been out refilling hummer feeders. They are swarming right now.

Coreen said...

Sorry about the damage cost estimate...

Yes, its game on in Tampa...technically the Yankees have a 1/2 game lead because they have
won 1 more game than the Rays & they are tied
in losses...

How about a quick post of your humming birds
or the bayou...just to start the week of with
something calm...

Carol said...

Coreen, they won't hold still for a group shot. They are zooming all over. I took about 10 shots just now and can't catch more than two in one shot and one is mid zoom.

Carol said...

And they aren't calm. They are hyper. Sounds like an airport out there.

Carol said...

We are going to have lows in the upper 60s next two days but highs still in the low 90s. I guess that's a cool front.

Carol said...

Exciting stick game Coreen.

Coreen said...

Tense, aggravating & frustrating more like it for me...

Coreen said...

But I am calm....

Carol said...

Still calm?

Carol said...

That Jackie could crack crystal.

Carol said...

She is a miracle.

Carol said...

Whether her preformance floats your boat or not, her voice is truely a miracle and proof that God does exist. IMHO.

Carol said...

And Coreen, you may be up late tonight or lose consciousness before someone scores in that game...

jan said...

Carol, I am so sorry to hear about your motor and the cost. No wonder you have trust issues.

I have never heard of a child that age with that kind of voice and that kind of control. She has such a calmness about her too.

jan said...

How exciting about your hummers. Do you suppose they are some that are stopping on the way during their journey.

Carol said...

Oh yes Jan. Last fill up, 500 miles to go.

Carol said...

Coreen, I bet you lost a drop of sweat on that inning??

Carol said...

I was sweating watching the stick men.

Carol said...

It was 0 to 0, bases loaded for Tampa Bay, bottom of the 10th and one out left.

Coreen said...

and the drama continues...into the bottom of the 11th...

Carol said...

Isn't it so cool that those hurricanes seem to run into a protective shield around the US. Maybe the power of our anti-hurricane prayer. Works for me.

Better grab you a cup of tea.

Carol said...

And not sleepytime tea.

Coreen said...

ball game over....Tampa wins by a home run...

Coreen said...

Igor's still out there, isn't he...

Carol said...

Rats. I missed that one. Can't do two tabs at the same time.

Carol said...

Igor, monster hurricane, Julia, tropical storm, and another something. None, at this time, threating the US.
