A trip down memory lane

On the trip to OK, I was inspired by Coreen to take a trip down memory lane. This trip we stayed in a motel in Claremore where I spent some years growing up. We drove out to the country where I lived as a child. Took a picture of a rock house my granddad built in the 1940's. I spent many happy times in this house with my grandparents. The pic of a rock with a hole in it stands at the edge of the driveway to the rock house. I don't have any information about the origin of the hole. Another picture is the library where I spent many happy hours. The library is now a city administration building. We drove past my old high school. A house sits across the street from the HS. Several teachers lived in this house over the years. It is now a tea room. It is a lovely old building that looks the same after all these years.

Hope you are ok with a new post. We were getting pretty full on last one.

Hi Carol, looks like we are the only ones here this early in the morning.

I didn't mean to interrupt your discussion of the BP disaster. I think you are right. We desperately need to have alternative forms of energy to try and break our dependence on oil.

Carol said...

Great Jan. I was just asking if anyone felt creative this morning. I love that rock house. Where did he get the rocks? Are there rocks in that neck of the woods like there are in Little Rock?

I just finished yacking up a storm on the other post. Didn't see you slip in.

jan said...

Carol, I have been reading your comments on the previous post. I get so disturbed by the news that I don't follow it that much.

All of the rocks were from the property. The Govt moved the Cherokees there from Georgia and the Carolinas and other indians from other prime U.S. land b/c no one else wanted it. That was the Trail of Tears. No - one else wanted the land until they discovered oil on it. They even had to give some of it away in the "land rush." The house is on an 80 acre tract that was awarded to my granddad by the Govt. My granddad had to clear all the rocks before he could do any planting. I didn't include a pic of it but he also build a rock wall around much of the land.

Carol said...

Yes, we must do something. It has become abudantly clear that there are many, who are willing to trash our planet for greed. Anyone who is opposed to this drilling moratorium is included. They have sold their souls to the devil and sold the souls of the rest of us. Their bad karma is building up.

This Gulf disaster is not just our problem down here, it is the world's problem. I hope it is not too late to do something. Mother Nature is watching us all. Will we come to her aid or will we just pretend everything is OK. Are we willing to make the sacrifices necessary to save her?

God is watching us, God is watching us.

Carol, almost all of the old houses in this part of the country were made from rock. It is very plentiful. Now of course, most new houses are brick. This is in northeast OK. Most people think all of OK looks like western OK. which is flat and browner. Northeast OK is rolling hills, and has lots of trees. It rains a good bit in the spring and early summer, so it is very green.

Carol said...

Very, very cool story, Jan.

The native americans are the ones who have probably done the most crying for what has been done to our land. But then, they bought them off with these casinos. If you can't fight them, join them.

jan said...

Carol, I completely agree with you about the earth. We are killing it, our "island home."

Carol said...

Jan, I certainly would like to stick my head in the sand. I don't have much space for any more worry. We can use the excuse that there is nothing we can do about it. That might be true but we can continue to pray and to do the little things that we can do. They might add up to bigger changes.

We can continue to be informed. We can continue to point out the BS. We can try to get the crooks outta office. We can support those who are out there trying to make a difference. There is something we can do.

jan said...

I am ambivalent about the casinos. They are a good source of income for the native communities here in NM that have them. But I also read that the gambling addiction is spreading among the natives and is increasing the risks of poverty, and child & domestic abuse here and in other native tribes across the country.

jan said...

Carol, I agree.

Carol said...

Jan, I love it that you now have the time to pursue this photography hobby and to share it with us. I'm jealous. Keep it up girl.

Carol said...

They have really wrecked havoc down here Jan. I don't think people put 2 and 2 together but I think it is all of our casinos here that have significantly contributed to the crime rate here. Maybe not all directly.

If you go to the casinos, you need to just go stand and watch around the machines where people go for more money. Watch the desparation on the faces on the people trying to take out money. Some have reached the ends of their funds.

Hey, I don't have a problem with gambling but I've spent more than I wanted to. I have had a little experience with the feeling. You put in your hard earned money, they take it, and then you want it back so you get a little more and they take that also.

jan said...

Time for my morning walk.

jan said...

Carol, the gambling issue distresses me too. I have not gambled except for buying an occasional lottery ticket. I have a family member who has lost a lot of money gambling. It is most distressing. It is an illness, just as alcoholism is an illness.

Carol said...

If you can afford the loss, it's not so bad, but those who can't afford the loss, go into the desparation downward spiral.

I have left the casino thinking of what I could have bought with the money I lost. This camp is what is keeping me away from that form of expensive entertainment.

It is an addiction. It's like a drug. It can get ya high. And then it takes you down, very low. No different than with any other drug/alcohol addiction. The bored are very vulnerable. I used to be bored.

Anonymous said...

Jan, Really beautiful!
I agree with Carol, I'm glad you have made time in your life to pursue more of the things you love. I can tell you are a perfectionist, and are good at everything you do.

I can't tell you how much I love that rock house. I used to pass a rock mission when I was a kid walking home from school. I've never lost the vision of it, and miss seeing that kind of building here in Texas.

I didn't realize that Oklahoma had all that rock. California was loaded with it, because of all the mountains and valleys. It was everywhere, and here they have to bring it in by train, so it's very expensive - a valuable commodity.

I'd give anything to be able to build even a small cottage that looked like that. Such nostalgia there, for me.

jan said...

Carol, you are the photographer. I just take pictures. I enjoy looking at old pictures for the memories they bring back. I enjoyed the pictures you posted recently of the old gang in nursing and of the horse rides. I wish we had taken more pics when we were in school together.

Carol said...

I'll have to admit that it is also this blog that has kept me away from the casinos. I'm never bored anymore.

Coreen said...

Jan,

These pics are just fantastic...I just came in
& will look more closely at what you wrote about each...am thoroughly enjoying your trip down memory lane...& the opportunity to see more of the country through your eyes....

thank you so much...

The stone house is great...It reminds me a little of what I would expect from some rural
English countryside....and you mention that now
houses in OK? are mostly made of brick....here
houses are rarely if ever made of either stone
or brick....there may be some adornment using
brick or stone, but not the entire structure....And the 2 story brick house reminds me of the south & southern hospitality...

And about libraries, our generation is likely
the last to even experience going to a library
& checking out books....

My remembrance would be of getting any Nancy Drew book they had....pretty sure Ivy may know
much more about Nancy Drew stories than I
remember...but I did so look forward to going
to the library to get every one that was there...

Carol....glad the morning is better than the
past few weather wise...here to a little relief
from the humidity but still too hot for us...

Need to get some work done..

And Jan, yes, please keep finding us more
'americana' in your neighborhood...

Carol said...

I will have to admit that I do have an addictive personality. Many of us, down here in the south do. It is manifested in so many ways. If I look around at my friends, almost all have some form of addiction.

jan said...

Chloe, good to see you here. LOL - I don't feel I am good at that much. I tend to give up on things that I don't do well right away. You are right about one thing, I have been a perfectionist - and that has kept me from enjoying my life at times. Lately, when I find myself trying to do something perfectly, I stop myself and think about what I am doing. It is very hard to change who we are at the core of our being. I think being an oldest child has affected that need to do things right. The worst is the need to "be right" in my relationships.

Carol said...

I used to pick up a little rock or stone or sea shell from everywhere I went. I put them around my little pond at the house. I have little pieces of all my travels at my house.

Carol said...

Gosh Jan. We are all flawed in some way.

jan said...

Coreen, thank you so much for your comments on the buildings I posted. My grandad's heritage was both English and Cherokee. I have wondered where he got the idea for building his house. It had 3 gables across the front. You cannot see the 3rd one for the trees. It was a most unusual structure in that part of the country. Most buildings were simply boxy, practical structures with little thought to architecture. My granddad never visited England - to my knowledge.

Coreen said...

Would think that 'addictive' personalities are
just about everywhere...the gambling obsession
here certainly can be attributed to the 2 indian casinos....I have had several clients
who filed bankruptcy as a result of the
casinos...sliding those plastic cards into
the 'free' money machines....just irresistable...& oh so easy!....

Coreen said...

Back to the pics..the leaning watertower...again for me the visual of the
vastness of the background jumps out....you can really see for miles in some areas of this country...I remember on trips across country
marveling at that....as I said here the horizon
is never that vast, many obstructions....

Carol said...

I wonder if that water tower is still functional?

Anonymous said...

"It is very hard to change who we are at the core of our being."

... yep, you can say that again Jan!
There are certain things that are important to each of us as individuals, and sometimes we just can't compromise. I think that's important though.

I'm still not completely caught up on the last thread. Wow... there's a lot of comments there - I'm working on it though.

Im off-

Just made up my mind, that im going to receive the bread and wine that the priest is going to offer....I will forgive my sins as he is doing this....

We can do this.....why trust a middle man to get the message thru....actually I won't know what I will do until the moment comes....it will depend on my mood of mind...not too much hypocritical bs going on.....I won't...too much and I will.....a 50-50 toss up....

Have on a nice suit with my new black gym shoes.....later

Carol said...

I prefer an environment that is full of trees even though a flat, clear ones would be nice for looking at the sunrise or sunset or a meteor shower.

Where do they get their oxygen? Where do they get their shade?

SF, as a farmer all his life, loves to see land that is cleared. It's land ready for planting crops.

jan said...

"I have little pieces of all my travels at my house."

Carol, what a lovely thing to do. You must take a pic of your pond and post it for us to see. I don't remember you mentioning your pond before.

The man that owns my granddad's house and land invited us in to see the house while we were there and invited me to take a rock from the property home with me, which I did. He also showed me the abstract of the property with my granddad's name on it. I shared some of my history of the property with him. This was the highlight of the trip for me. After we returned home, John told me he felt he knew me much better now.

Meantime, I'm going to link my photo-bucket where I uploaded a few pics from my camera yesterday (there's more that I'll upload later, but some of them are on phone camera's though). Hubby even shuck in a partial photo of gam-ma with Emma (when I wasn't looking). http://s613.photobucket.com/home/Chloe-Emma/recentuploads

Anonymous said...

... that pic with Emma grabbing Pooh Bear show's her trying to walk off with it in the Disney Store (it was bigger than her!), then falling over before she finally makes it up to the cash register. So, of course, we had to buy it!

Now she sleeps with it - of course, it takes up about half her crib, but she's happy. :)

Solar said...

Jan,

U are on the road to relax....almost all of what, and who we are; is already programed in each and every one of us....we all share a large % of whatever we have ....the rest is making the right choices, being in the right place at the right ti me..etc, etc.

But don't ever forget that we all share the same things, and the only difference is how we use what we have,.....and the opportunity to use what we have....some never do.!!

This is why I love George Washington Carver....he used his ol cabeza really really well no?.....

"I went in to say goodbye and he had this aggravated look on his face. I asked what was wrong and he said, you are having to run your fool head off."

That is so touching Carol - gratitude is alive and well! That man definitely knows what's going on in his world. Thank goodness you're around to help him stay in it. (... can you imagine what it would be like to have someone reach down, and transplant you to a completely foreign (like a nursing home) environment, with no time to adapt? It would be enough to drive you crazy!)

Coreen said...

Chloe,

What a pleasure seeing your blue-eyed beauty

Grampa rode with her so I could snap some pics Coreen. She was pretty scared, but did amazingly well. She is a very careful little girl (sometimes head strong like me), but she took quite well to the experience, for it being the first time. I'm sure she'll have more fun next time.

I'm caught up on the last thread finally, but can't comment on it 'til later - I've sluffed off this morning, so must get something done before it piles up on me.

Carol said...

You're such a tease Chloe. When I read that there was a pic of you in there, I got myself a cup of coffee, got comfortable on the couch, turned off all the noise in the room, turned down the lights and fired up those pics. Then all I get is a top of your head shot. What a disappointment. You have to do better than than. I know more about what the Russian spies look like.

BTW, great shots of the Emster.

Carol said...

Hey, I even blew it up. I think you have a gnat sitting on your head.

Carol said...

Chloe, you are the only mystery person on this blog and I think you enjoy that.

jan said...

Chloe, I love the pictures of Emma. She has the most expressive eyes and eyebrows. In some of the earlier pics of her, I assume some are with Emma's mother. She gets her beautiful eyes from her mother. I guess the one pic is of you with Emma. You look great. I can't believe you are in your 60's. I chuckled at the pics of Emma and the Pooh Bear. She does like that Pooh bear.

jan said...

Solar, I do relax on trips. Taking pictures is fun and relaxing for me. I try to do things that keep me involved with John since he does most of the driving. I like to keep him involved so as not to get sleepy.

jan said...

Solar, LOL - glad you liked the "stone teepee"

jan said...

Interesting Solar, I had not made that observation that the "gable" is the same shape as a "teepee" How funny!

Anonymous said...

"you are the only mystery person on this blog and I think you enjoy that. "

Carol, no - I don't enjoy it. I actually feel a little guilty, but still, I'm a little surprised that I even posted that pic of my head. Who knows, maybe eventually you'll get one of the face? I'm taking baby steps. :)

... and BTW, thanks everyone for the nice comments. You guys are the best.

Well, I'm going to work up a little more of an appetite, then we're going out for Mexican food. As Emma would say, yum!

jan said...

Chloe, speaking of the rock houses. I have heard that rock is not a good insulator for houses - heats up in summer and keeps house cold in winters. Don't know the origin of this info - only what I have heard. These old rock/stone houses have stood the test of "time" however. Many of these old stone/rock houses are still standing. Interesting, some of you call them stones; I grew up calling them rocks - apparently one of those regional differences.

I have enjoyed our conversation this morning. Thank you - all of you- for your positive responses to the post this morning. I appreciate your friendship :>)

jan said...

I am getting back to work on my GD's t-shirt quilt today.

BTW, I had lunch with a another retired faculty yesterday. We are going to begin getting together to quilt and work on projects. She is originally from Nebraska. She and her partner have been restoring an old adobe house and are almost finished.

Carol said...

Better hurry up with that pic Chloe. I went over to start a load of clothes at my house this morning, and my immagination got the best of me. Hey, I've got a good one. I mentioned this morning that I know more about the Russians spies than I do about you. Then it hit me, between putting in the Tide detergent and the Gain Ultra fabric softener, smells so clothes line fresh,....that maybe one of us is a Russian spy. When I got back to the camp, I searched the Magster for a listening device. She was clean. I think she's safe.

I've heard Jan's accent and Coreen's also. They don't sound Russian. Don't let Coreen fool ya, she does have an accent...and snakes also.

Now, for the rest of yous.....I can't be certain. Oh, and me.....you can't be certain either. Of course, both Chloe and me hate the extreme cold and if we had to live in Russia, you'd think we would have acquired a little cold tolerance...or a serious Vodka addiction.

Carol said...

Oh, and Ivy and Solar. They do seem to have to leave suddenly and frequently. Maybe they are off on a secret mission.

Carol said...

And speaking of quilts.....when I got to my house, roomie showed me this huge quilt she's working on. She was making it for me. It had scraps from all my old clothes and t-shirts. Isn't that wonderful. I was going to give it all the Good Will but I was so overwhelmed when I needed to do that, that I left the pile over there and said do what you want with it. She also quilts and likes scraps of material, like you do Jan.

Talk about some good karma! It's coming back all over me.

Carol said...

And I do have a little over half of a half gallon bottle of Sky Vodka sitting on my kitchen window sill. It's been there for 5 years and I have used it for some Bloody Marys, not my sister, over those years. Still having that much left, after 5 years, might just rule me out as being a Russian Spy.

Now, if any of you suddenly stop posting here, I'll think that my suspicions were correct. How's that for my trying to keep you guys around?? LOL

Ivy, any good missions lately???

Carol said...

Yep, I'm dilly dallying but it's soooo hot outside. I'm not sure if I can get into and out of Walmart without having a heat stroke. I'm trying to suck up some AC before I head out for that mission. Oop, wrong word I used there.

Carol said...

Oh, and for another thing...I bet there are people who use innocent looking little blogs to send coded spy messages to people in other places around the world. Ever think about that? I'm sure not. We have had lots of foreign stars on our little star map, including those from the Russian Federation. Hah! So there. I've also noticed that many of our foreign stars have dissappeared lately.

jan said...

Carol, I give your new roomie Jan's seal of approval. I have not met a quilter I didn't like. What a sweet thing to do for you. I think she is definitely a keeper. I think making quilts out of t-shirts and your old clothes is a "green" thing to do too - it is recycling.

jan said...

It is time for a trip to the laundromat for me. I have some blankets and small rugs to wash. I am not having to go to the laundromat as often since Lobie died - sigh!

jan said...

"Still having that much left, after 5 years, might just rule me out as being a Russian Spy. "

Carol, probably rules out your having a drinking problem too LOL.

I taped a Julia Child segment from PBS this afternoon. Watched it and it was a New Orleans chef (Emeril) cooking a shrimp ettoufe. Made me so hungry. He cooked a roux too. I am keeping that segment. I get so hungry for ettoufe (Carol, I know this is misspelled).

jan said...

I have dilly dallied here all afternoon. It is so hot here too. Just too hot to get out.

Carol said...

Hey Jan, you only left out one f and one e. It's Étouffée. I didn't know how to spell it either. I googled it. I have to google just about every other word I try to spell. I'm an awful speller. Learning disabled, I am. Sometimes I'm just too lazy to even google it.

Most dictionaries, if you can't spell it, you can't look it up. With google, it tries to figure out what ya want to spell.

Carol said...

I just got back from visiting and eating with my weekend, RR(river rat) friends. It's good to have them back out here again.

We caught a nice rain this afternoon and it cooled it down considerably. It was quite pleasant for sitting outside. When the skeeters came out, my friend cranked up Rita, a huge fan named after our last hurricane. He built that fan out of an old ceiling fan. He just loves creating and building stuff.

Carol said...

Ut oh, scared ya off with my spy talk? I was just kiddin folkes. I really do like spies. I really do.

Carol said...

And Jan, I'm not a big etouffee fan. I prefer my seafood boiled and I like my fish fried unless it is salmon. Most of my seafood I like drenched in lemon or lemon and butter.

I don't care for seafood gumbo either but I love chicken and sausage gumbo. Now I do like a good crab stew if it's made by a good old Cajun cook and they leave the crab in it's little white jacket. I like to suck that crab meat, dripping in gravy, out of the little shell. That gravy will be dripping your arms. Gotta take a shower afterwards.

jan said...

Carol, thanks for spelling etouffee for me. As you can see I don't know how to put the little accents on the word. On this I am not a perfectionist. I meant to look up the word on Google and forgot.

Sounds like you had fun today Carol. Good for you.

I had a day of rest and it was lovely. I did not exercise or do anything constructive. I take that back - I did put up this post and that was constructive.

Our good friend Carl dropped by late this morning with his 5 babies (full-grown dogs). He was taking them to the river - the Rio Grande that is.

Also, newly birthdayed 9 year old GD dropped by with her parents to pick up her B'day gift. We all had a great visit. All in all it was a good day that started off with a real nice chat with my friends here this morning.

jan said...

Hasta Manana - Gotta find out how to put that little squggli above the 1st n

Carol said...

Jan, the reason that little thingy was on that word was because I cut and pasted the word with it already on it. OK. Believe me, I wouldn't have figured out how to do it myself. Chloe might know how but I'm still hanging in on Computer 101. I haven't progressed that much even though I've been playing with these things since I invented the Internet. No, that was Al Gore wasn't it? And speaking of Al, his little mess sure went off the radar.

And as for the word squggli, you just made up that word, huh? I do remember when we were taking our Psych nursing class, old Lynn W called that a neologism, making up a word, and she said that it was one sign of schizophrenia. Yep, I remember she said that. I remember it like it was yesterday. Can't say I've ever heard it again with regards to schizophrenia. I always loved making up my own words. If ya can't find a word that works for ya, just make one up. It works for me.

And another sign of schizophrenia is....flight of ideas. That's another concept I like to practice on occasion. I guess y'all have noticed, huh.

Hey, I've managed to function pretty well with my schizophrenia. Haven't heard any voices yet, even though there was that time I saw that dragonfly talking to me. Didn't hear anything though.

I just popped awake early this morning. Last night on C2C I was listening to this guy talk about teleportation. He was even telling ya how to do it. I shut my eyes to see if I could do it and fell fast asleep. I might have headed somewhere but I don't remember. I was going to come over and visit. Now, if I pop in unannounced, don't shoot me.

Since we are the only two who have checked in since I mentioned that spy thing, I think we just might be the only two who weren't Russian spies here. Shucks, some people get all the fun. Do you think Solar's BIL knows he's a spy?

And speaking of spies, I hope I haven't triggered a blog investigation by mentioning that. There just might be key words that trigger investigations and spy might be one of them. Oops, there goes that flight of ideas again. Just takes off when I least expect it.

Another thing, while I'm flying here....I like being able to wake up at any ole time in the wee hours and then just go back to sleep. That's another advantage of your being retired. You can wake up and go back to sleep whenever you want. My big sister does it. She sleeps with the light on so she's ready to do whatever when she wakes up. She usually reads.

Carol said...

And Jan, there's still a Tulsa star on our map since you left there. Did you leave your star on when you left? You might have to call and have them turn it off. Most of the time, when someone doesn't show up for a while, the star goes off.

And I did enjoy jawing with ya on the phone this morning. It was like old times. It's nice to be able to hear a voice every now and again. I enjoy talking to Coreen also. She's cool. I like having a voice and a pic to think of when communicating with you people on this blog. Just a pic would be nice, hint, hint.

And Coreen probably doesn't have much of an accent but it is very different than mine. I seem to exaggerate mine when I'm here. No, you can't hear it but I hear it in my head. Hey, I'm from the south so I should sound like I am.

When I was young, I sounded just like my mom. She's from Chicago and had a heavy accent back when she was younger. She lost it over the years and so did I. But I did sound like her and people thought I was from up that way. I tend to pick up other people's accents when I'm around them for a while. I'm not mocking them, it just happens.

Once, I had this nursing student with this very heavy country accent. It was so cute. I'd catch myself talking just like her. It was embarrasing. I hope she didn't think I was making fun of her.

Students were so scared to death of me in clinical. I tried harder than any other faculty member to keep them from being afraid but they still came in trembling. The other clinical instructors would line them up and grill them. Not me, I had to make sure I had a crash cart ready when they got there. After they got to know me, they calmed down. Of course they never let on, to any other students, that I was just a pussy. They wanted everyone to think I was a bad ass and they could put an extra star on their reputation for just having survived the experience.

I had one male nursing student who dropped out with a bleeding ulcer. Never made it to the first clinical. That happened shortly after he saw that I was going to be his clinical instructor that semester. Can you believe that?

I had one female student who became completely catatonic when she got near me. You know how we make them tell us about a medication before they give it. They can bring in those drug cards for help. Well, she was fixing to give one of her medications and I asked her to tell me about it. She froze. I asked her if she brought in her drug card. She nodded her head. I asked where was it. She looked at her pocket. I asked her to take it out. She did that. I asked her to read it to me. I'm not sure if she could even do that. That girl did end up failing clinical that semester. I didn't want to do it. Since failing a student in clinical is such a time consuming process, I tried to drag her over the finish line but she wouldn't let me. As it turned out, she had some severe psychological issues.

Carol said...

I think the reason I got such a reputation is that when I had a student, who really couldn't cut the mustard, I failed them. It didn't happen often. There were other faculty member who would grill them, embarrass them, and torment them but still passed them on when they shouldn't, because they were just too lazy to go thru what you had to go thru to fail them. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I let someone slip thru who couldn't do the job.

Carol said...

And PS hadn't set up camp when I went to bed last night. I kept checking and she wasn't there. Last I checked was around 11:30p. I thought for sure that she had been blown away with that early morning thunderstorm we had yesterday.

I had a memorial service all worked out in my head, wasn't going to share it with you guys, but this AM she is back. She must have slept later than usual.

And my Mallards, they never returned. I have seen the young Mallards on the road but there are only 4 of them left. Maybe the rest headed north. If they were smart, they sure needed to. It's even too hot for ducks around here.

"Hasta Manana - Gotta find out how to put that little squggli above the 1st n"

Jan, the only way I've ever been able to accomplish that on a blog, is by finding it written that way on any site (Wikipedia is the first thing to come up when I searched for manana) and there mañana had the squiggly. So I copied the whole word and pasted it here, and my paste picked up the squiggly: Mañana

... from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/*Ma%C3%B1ana

It works with other things too, like the music sign: ♪

or: ツ ☮ ❖ ✌ ♋ 웃 유 Σ ⊗ ♒ ☠ ☯ ♠ Ω ♤ ♣ ♧ ♥ ♡ ♦♢♔ ♕ ♚ ♛ ★ ☆ ✮ ✯ ☄ ☾ ☽ ☼ ☀ ☁

... and of that line of symbols above. Just about any symbol you can copy and paste will apparently work on blogs.

I did a search a few minutes ago, and that line of symbols above (along with many more) just happen to come up on a facebook symbol page: http://facebook-symbols.com/all/

Chloe, thank you for all the info on how to find symbols. I will use that. How clever of you both - Carol and Chloe to find the word and paste it. I have not thought of that. I learn so much on here.

Carol, I have been laughing out loud at your expeiences with students. I don't think you were scary, but hey I have known you since you were 19.

jan said...

Carol, a squiggle (not squiggli) is a word. I looked it up in Wikopedia. It is a short twisting or wiggling line. This is it ~ on the keyboard - but I did not know how to put it over the 1st n in manana.

Do you remember that Lynn W. was really scary to students too. She used psychology to scare students. We didn't think she was scary b/c we worked with her and she did not teach our psych class. When I went back and taught psych with her 2 summers, students were terrified of her - and for good reason. She was good at humiliating students when other people were watching. Lynn liked doing that.

jan said...

Carol, Lynn W. was right - making up words is something schizophrenics do - but so do theorists (Freud- made up words like Id, Ego & Superego), and identical twins that make up their own language.

jan said...

Carol, I enjoyed talking with you yesterday. You do not have a southern accent. I think you still do sound like someone from the midwest. I think it is interesting that you never acquired a southern accent. I have never lost my OK/ARK twang. People here are always asking me "where are you from?" My 2 sons who live here don't sound like me. they lost their OK accents somewhere along the way.

Morning Jan.... and ooops...sorry Carol, I didn't realize that you'd already pointed out on the copy and paste for that squiggly - don't know why I missed that.

Yes Jan, I know there's a way to do it ourselves with a control key or something, but I've never been motivated to find it, because I don't need to use it that often.

... well, out and about for a while. Have a great day everyone.

The Baseline Scenario

What happened to the global economy and what we can do about it
Treasury Makes A Mistake – Claiming They Are Not Blocking Elizabeth Warren

with 430 comments

By Simon Johnson

It’s one thing to block Elizabeth Warren from heading the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

It’s quite another thing to deny in public, for the record, that any such blocking is going on (e.g., see this report; Michael Barr apparently said something quite similar today).

There is a strong groundswell of opinion on this issue from the left – see the BoldProgressives petition. But the center also feels strongly that, given everything Treasury has said and done over the past few months, it would be a complete travesty not to put the strongest possible regulator in change of protecting consumers. (See Ted Kaufman on the NYT’s DealBook, giving appropriate credit to the SEC, and apply the same points to broader customer issues going forward.)

This can now go only one of two ways.

1. Elizabeth Warren gets the job. Bridges are mended and the White House regains some political capital. Secretary Geithner is weakened slightly but he’ll recover.
2. Someone else gets the job, despite Treasury’s claims that Elizabeth Warren was not blocked. The deception in this scenario would be nauseating – and completely blatant. “Everyone was considered on their merits” and “the best candidate won” will convince who exactly?

Despite the growing public reaction, outcome #2 is the most likely and the White House needs to understand this, plain and clear – there will be complete and utter revulsion at its handling of financial regulatory reform both on this specific issue and much more broadly. The administration’s position in this area is already weak, its achievements remain minimal, its speaking points are lame, and the patience of even well-inclined people is wearing thin.

Failing to appoint Elizabeth Warren would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It will go down in the history books as a turning point – downwards – for this administration.

Had a delightful couple of hours. Our next door neighbor's sister is housesitting and locked herself out of the house. She came over to our house and stayed until the locksmith came. She is delightful. We enjoyed her time here. She is 36 and looks 22. She works for a non profit foundation and works with 5 middle schools providing a variety of health and other services for the kids in these schools. She said she was living in Greece, working on a PhD in Ancient Archeology, was "all but dissertation" and decided it was not a field she liked and dropped out.

Her story reminds me of when I finished my nursing degree. I had worked 6 months in the hospital as a nurse and hated it. I quit my job and went to graduate school. I was going to get a graduate degree psychology. It was not nursing I hated - it was hospital nursing I did not like. That is the beauty of nursing - there are lots of ways to do nursing.

I have a question of you guys. Do you all know anything about trees? We have a big tree in our front yard. I don' know what kind of tree it is. About 2 years ago we had our front yard landscaped and put rocks in it.
The landscaper put this plastic all over the yard first before the rocks on it. He put the plastic all the way up to the base of the tree and then the rocks. The tree looks like it is dying. Many of the branches are bare now. It was a beautiful rich tree when we moved in 4 years ago. I went out this morning and scraped all the rocks from the base of the tree out to about 3-5 feet and tore out all the plastic under the tree and watered it really good. I am going to have someone come in a couple of months and trim the tree really well. I hope to save it. I also asked John to pray for the tree this morning too. Do you all have any suggestions?

jan said...

We have to water almost everything here. The only things that don't need water are the native grasses and cacti, some evergreens like the pinons.

wrong article, but it will do...

My ex brother in law was married in one of those huge mega churches...the parking grounds are so large that they have shuttle busing into the main building.

Once in there I notice the cieling first...had a hugt pic of the universe....and then was visually lost in the expanse of the long, long corridors...

There was door that led into every concievable room that one can imagine......the floors were marble. The Main stage...not a church like stage, but a rock concert stage...was huge...seating for thousands....

Huge movie screens...band instruments all over the place....lighting, microphones, etc..all modern and were many...

.....did find the alter where they had a gold cup and a cple of gold candels holder with candels in them.....the alter was made/the trim anyway out of gold also.....the size of the alter was smaller than a coffee table....just large enough to hold the above mentioned........set in the middle it looked like a toy table....

but he is being taken by this pastor for a lot of $.....and doesn't care, as long as he can belong to the best church around.

He has been wit h my cousin Juana for a cpl of years now....she has had major problems herself...she was molested (just found out) by her SF for some time....he is dead now...for a few years...if he was there yesterday...I would have knocked him on his ass....she is very nice..she had not changed in all of the time that i have known her...but now she a convert to this new relation..she was just baptized there...on the insistence of my bil

Carol said...

Jan, do you know what kind of tree it is? And most trees do need water. That plastic stuff may be killing it, if it isn't already too late. I think the praying may be your best bet along with some watering. If it was stressed then it may have been vulnerable to some disease. Try to find out what kind of tree it is and read about it.

Solar, I'm not sure I understand your lead in to that link you left. Did you meet the preacher yesterday? Is he the one that married your BIL and cousin? Not enough info there or is it a secret code?

It's been pouring here and I'm laying on the couch watching that movie. I have to get up and move around so I don't fall asleep. I'm even drinking some coffee now.

Found out that he, was a general contractor....I helped build a church one time....there is a lot of Money in building one...everything is top notch....and I can also see how the no taxes on churches would have attracted him.....nice, build them, pay your self huge money for them, not taxes...and then the real $ comes into play.....10-15% of what his congregation earns goes directly to him.......tax free...he has many of them around the county....

Carol said...

Solar, your post wasn't there when I asked the question. I got my answer now. I think these mega churches are such a joke. Certainly nothing to do with Christianity. They ought to name them for what they are....United Church of the Big Suckers.

Ok thats enough.....im sure that you pinks do not want to hear all of the rest.....the reception at the Golf Club..and all.....

I also don't care for the mega churches. I went to a huge church in Dallas for a while. It was into entertainment. The minister was a man in his 40's. One Sunday, I was standing close to he and his wife in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The ministers wife accidentally spilled coffee on her husband. He turned to her and gave her the most hateful look I have ever seen a human being give another one. It was scary. Frankly I think he was the devil. About a year later, the big Dallas paper had a big article telling how this minister was having multiple affairs with women in his congregation. Of course he was ousted. It was a Baptist church and this minister was on the Baylor Board of Trustees.

jan said...

"United Church of the Big Suckers"

Carol, Great name for these churches.

Solar, interesting about the building of churches and how all this is tax-free. I probably would not say this in front of John, but I don't hold much with organized religion either. Since John and I have been married, the more I know about organized religion, the less I care about it. This is why on Sunday mornings I go for long walks and get out in nature. I pretty much am in tune with my native american ancestors in my views on spirituality and religion. I believe God resides in all of us and in nature. I love it that Native peoples in this country would apologize to animals before they killed them. There is a reverence among native peoples for all living things - animals and plants alike. I am coming more and more to this way of thinking.

Carol, I do not know the kind of tree it is. I need to find out. New Mexico University has an extension service here. I think I will call them and see if I can get some information. It puts out a lot of sap in the spring. The leaves are rather small. It was a beautiful tree when we moved in and it looks as if it is slowly dying. I have not been good with green things.

Jan,

That is the only way to think....we are nature, we are all the universe..we are all it....god..

I do like what some dedicated people try to do, in all religions, and churches...but just like our governance....they get hi-jacked along the way, and it becomes something else entirely....

I have had a cpl of Pastors as clients...they still owe me, after 10 years...I guess that I will be paid in the end....no i have already have been paid in the end........the wrong end HA.!

Im one third Indian and do think they had it mostly right...but they were also greedy....some of the "Big Men" were also big frauds.....not many now that the Totem Pole was just an advertisement for the big show...he was the most enlightened.....just another salesmen...their are suckers in all things......I blame the believers...

It sounds pretty bad from me..b/c I really come down on them.....but I have done a lot of studying on this subject....not very pretty.!!

I have just loved being here with my grandchild. She is so beautiful. I just keep trying to see one ounce of Jeremy in her. There is a picture of Steph's father as a baby in a gown and I thought they had taken a picture of Lauren. She is a clone of him. I'm going to have a hard time leaving her in a couple of days.

Yesterday AJ Burnett had to leave the game early after he cut his hands when he slammed his hands against a door after giving up a 3 run homer...idiot...now both of these pitchers
could miss a turn..not good...

About that tree, removing the plastic was the
best thing to do...covering tree roots with
plastic sheeting may reduce weeds but it likely is suffocating the tree roots...some
water when the soil is dry & some plant food
(Miracle gro) once it gets to breathe won't
hurt, even a light layer of top soil, but not
heavy...& won't be surprised if the tree makes a come back.... mother nature has a way of taking care of things, with just a little TLC...(unless the tree has been attacked by some pest that is killing it)...for that you would have to bring some leaf samples to a garden center to see if something is killing it....

It is still raining. My friend, 20 miles to the west, hasn't seen a drop of rain today and it hasn't stopped raining here since around 11a. I don't mind because it kept it cool and lazy.

I'm glad you had fun yesterday Solar.

There was no drinking, other than some wine...I brought a bottle home with me, and extra one....before the dancing started there was a prayer.....then there was a prayer by the Mother in law, my Aunt...that did not know me..she is 84 and we sat and talked for a while...she was a very pleasant person.

Then there were other prayers by other people.....they were trying to out pray each other....I was asked to make one.....I said, that when ( i bit on my tongue, did not say all of what I wanted to say) Jesus died for our sins.....he died for all of us, not just the few in that room...and that we should remember that he even died for those that haven't even seen civilization....Indians in the Peru mountains or any where in the world.......there were lots of blank looks in the room.....I laughed inside....i did my job.:-))

Well that stopped all the praying for a w hile....I went out to the bar, and had a shot, and a beer, w tih my son....the only one for the whole night...came back and all of the dancing started...there were cha-chas, rock-n-roll, all typs mixed in...

I put my left foot in, and shook it all about....but im missing my right foot........

Then we went back to Als house until midnight...that was a lot of fun...always is when all of us get together....even talked some politics with Al jr.....very big republican that is always amazed that I don't defend the D's very much...or t he R's.....told him before that if we were to talk politics....i wouldn't listen to just his talking points...wanted talk some history behind it all,,,,he liked it cos I gave him much to think about...he said....thats about it.!

A little blurb on MSNBC warning that the sea bed may not be stable and there might be a little methane and oil leak at the oil site of the well. The government ordered BP to do what it can and as fast as it can. Mika threw that out there and moved on real quick like she could barely stand to even mention it.

I checked with the early news that was on C2C last night to see what they had to say. They are a little more free with telling it like it is than the MSM. The dude who is hosting last night, some other guy named George said something very similar to what Mika said, he also said that he usually doesn't pay much attention to all this doom and gloom stuff but..... He kinda moved on pretty quick after saying that.

On Huff Post:

"The official, who would not clarify what is seeping near the well, also said BP is not complying with the government's demand for more monitoring."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/18/bp-well-cap-bp-feds-clash_n_650621.html

Isn't that cute? BP won't let our government tell them what to do or know what is going on.

I'm kinda wondering why we have to bother to pay taxes to the government, why not send it directly to the bankers, Wallstreet and the oil companies. Hey they are the ones in charge and no one is even trying to hide it anymore. Am I dreaming?

That really was a mind boggling twist on Shutter Island - the twist of all twists. I remember hubby and I discussed it back and forth all through our meal afterward, trying to get it straight.

You know, different people get different things out of that movie, but what I liked most about it was how it was taken to such an extreme 'rationalization' - someone's mind working that hard to justify an outcome that he needed to believe.

He was completely insane, of course, but we all know, on a much smaller level, how our mind can play tricks on us occasionally - however, to be completely insane like that, not being able to differentiate reality from imagination - well, it would be terrifying beyond description. That movie mixed the two (reality and imagination) so well, that it took a lot of thought to sort through it all out at the end - and that's what I liked most about it.

Chloe, It has been a few months since I saw the movie, but yes, it is interesting how the mind works to justify what we believe about ourselves. I did keep wondering throughout the movie why they were showing the flashbacks of his wife. What was confusing to me was that the mental institution set up such an elaborate "game" to get him to come out of his denial. Later, when John and I talked about it, we both felt that some of it was a little "far-fetched." I may rent the movie and watch it again just to clarify some stuff for myself. I am glad you saw it too.

I like movies that are not so predictable. Some movies made in this country have such a "cookie-cutter" type plot. I like some of the foreign films for that reason.

Afternoon folkes. I went back to the site I linked this morning, about the doom and gloom, to look up the credentials of the author and couldn't find any. Don't think he has any. The site didn't look too goofy but I think the writers might be.

That's about par for my day today. It was filled with so much manure, but I'm hoping after I get thru shoveling it all, that down under it all, I will find a little pony. Just a little pony.

I'll only share my first shipment of manure today. As I was pulling in the parking lot at work, my phone rings. It's the ambulance service telling me SF's Med Alert went off and that he didn't respond when they tried to contact him. They were sending an ambulance. I'm 40 miles away so I stopped and called everyone I know in the area and no one answered their cell phones. About right. I called into work and told them I would be late because I'm heading to see what is wrong.

I tried another one of SF's friends, who was at his job, and he answered. I told him. He called me back shortly after and told me he just called SF and he answered. Everything was OK. I didn't think of calling SF since he didn't respond to the ambulance people. Next time I'll know better.

I don't know how SF triggered that alarm but he had to have done it on purpose. It would be almost impossible to do it by accident. The ambulance people never called me back to tell me that it was a false alarm. I called them to bitch about that.

The rest of my manure will have to remain a mystery to you. I'm sure you will appreciate that. I don't even want to have to think about it again much less write about it but trust me, it was piled up high.

I will say that most of the manure is the result of my having put up with a lot of abuse from a lot of people for a long time. It is my fault and this has finally forced me to do something about that. That pony, if and when I get down to it, might be one fine pony.

It would be fun to discuss that movie, how we each interpreted it, if everyone who wanted to see it, would see it.

Carol said...

Some parts of that movie, if it were a puzzle, would not fit together. It does require us to come to much of our own conclusions and multiple conclusions could be possible.

Carol said...

Anyone else planning to see the movie??

Carol said...

After knowing how it ends, I would like to watch the entire movie again to see if some of the things I don't think made sense, would make sense. I'm still scratching my head over one part of the end.

jan said...

OK, I will rent the movie. It is one of those where you would like to go back after you know the ending and see if the puzzle fits together. John wants to get out of the house. So off we go.

jan said...

Carol, sorry you had a manure-filled day. Hope you can relax this evening and night.

I am still shoveling Jan. Just got thru another pile, no pony yet but I'm still looking.

Does anyone know that story, about the pony and the poop? I heard it in church a long time ago. It's about the little pessimest and the little optimist. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I will tell you the story.

Carol said...

Jan, didn't you go to the same church I grew up in and did I still go when you were here or was I already a church drop out. But they did get my formative years.

Chloe, when I went to WM Saturday, I passed up getting more cookies. Wasn't really in the mood for them then. Never am in the morning but now I'm jonsing for some. Nothing sweet around here but cantaloupe and that's not what I want. Already had some of that.

I did still have some of that melting chocolate and pecans, always keep that around. So now I have some chocolate covered pecans cooling down in the frig. Won't be long now. I have to have a serious hankering to go to that trouble.

Ut oh, I just stepped outside and PS is already building her web and I swear, she is much bigger than she was last night. I also think she has on a different outfit. There seems to be dots on her belly. Tonight she put her web directly in my path to take the Magster out. I don't think I can even get around it. My spider tolerance is starting to wane a bit. I think I may relocate her tonight, carefully, very carefully.

Carol said...

The Mag and I managed to make it around PS's web but her leash knocked out one of the lower support cables. The lower portion of the web rolled up but PS didn't pull it in like she usually does. She's getting defiant, just like some of my peeps in the joint.

BP is trying to buy up scientist for their silence. Hooray for those who are refusing to sell their souls to the Devil. We still have some heros around.

Thanks Anderson Cooper for trying to keep them honest. You are also our hero.

I rented Shutter Island and watched a good bit of it but got tired. I will finish it tomorrow. This second time around it is not too interesting when you know the outcome.

Carol keep lookin for that pony. I too had a yen for something chocolate tonight. All I had were some choc chips in the freezer so I had a handful.
Goodnite.

Jan, Chloe, are we going to discuss the movie? We can alway preface our discussion with an Spoiler Alert, warning anyone not to read if they haven't seen the movie.

Now I can't say that I was totally 100% paying attention to every minute of the movie. It also took me about 4 hours to get thru the entire movie with all my jumping up and down. I don't sit still well. I even might have dozed off a couple of times but not for long.

I've gotten kind of spoiled by being able to watch a movie by myself. I can pause it any time I want to. When I watched with sis, I couldn't do that, I had to sit still.

Carol said...

Where do ya'll get your movies now. I think I heard that our Blockbuster is going outta business. They were so expensive and I often ended up renting movies that I never found the time to watch. If I pay a dollar, that's not so bad, but when you pay close to 5 bucks, that's highway robbery.

I love those Redboxes but you can't get older movies there. I guess I'll have to join Netflix. Anyone do that?

Carol said...

Well, I'll have to confess, that last night I moved PS. Yep, after we knocked out that lower support cable, she just hung there on her damaged web, clutching to one of the prey she had packaged up. I think she was very surprised that we did it. Hey, we didn't do it on purpose, at least I don't think so.

She was just getting too scary looking, growing in size too fast and becoming incorrigable. She was taking advantage of my good nature.

This morning I was pondering, yep, I was doing that. I thought of how that PS was doing the very same thing to me that some of my peeps at the joint have done, that my employer has done, and that my family sometimes does... I thought that there was probably some significance to her being here. She was here to teach me a lesson.

And yesterday I put the ball into motion to stop all the abuse. It will be tough to change my behavior, the behavior that instigated and allowed it all. It was all my fault. I do it to feel needed and important but the only thing is, that no one gives a big damn. No one really gives you any credit for being a marter. They actually think you are a big idiot but they will take full advantage of your stupidity.

Another thing is, once you have allowed this kind of abuse for years, it is very difficult to change. You have to be willing to look like the big AH for a good while. For people with my problem, we don't like looking like an AH. It's all about that co-dependency, isn't it? I will have to get used to everyone hating me for a while but if being the door mat was the only reason some people liked me then is was not really like, was it?

Like AA or NA, I will need a sponsor here. Will y'all be my sponsor?

We are getting close to that witching number here. I bet some of you guys have some pics ready. Anyone ready to put up a new post?

Carol, I started to comment on your co-dependence comment, but I'm going to wait until I think about it for a while.

Regarding Netflix: We have the down loadable Netflix, and it works out well in our household. The way we did it, is we got a blue ray player at Best Buy that was set up for downloads through Netflix (as well as others) - but I think Netflix does offer a box to download straight to also. The mailed to you technique works out well for many people too - and you you can mail them back late with no extra charge.

The down-loadable ones work best around our house, because you can download them on the spur of the moment. The program even has a que set up that you can leave movies waiting for you until you're ready to view them. A flat rate gives you unlimited movies, or there are smaller packages available.

I just looked at the site, and they even download to your computer: http://www.netflix.com/

"I have to have a serious hankering to go to that trouble."

I know exactly what you mean Carol. There comes a time that nothing else will work. Been there, done that - not making the exact same thing, but I do always have cake mixes sitting in the cupboard, for emergencies.

If we discuss that movie, then I'll probably need to see it again. I originally saw it the first weekend it came out, and the memory just isn't what it used to be.

Anonymous said...

"This second time around it is not too interesting when you know the outcome."

... I think that's why I'd have a hard time watching it again Jan. The mystery is gone. I'm not someone who watches movies more than once.

The "Mind" creates the movies for you that helps protect the body. Everything that U see, hear, and smell is created in a way that it is like a movie for the body to function....

I will be gone again for a cpl of days..and back on Friday...I thought that I would have left for Ohio yesterday, but had to wait until later today.....have fun.!

Solar said...

Carol,

Been thinking while waiting for a few emails.

Once again it is of no surprise that you are using the shovel to get out of a pile of poop, we all have to do just that in order to get to go on that pony ride.!!

People like you can not wait (persistent=results) until you are buried in it...just not what you do.....sometimes we need to just keep moving, in order to get things done...

We started going to the library about a couple of months ago for books. They also have movies. They are often older, classic movies. I like Redbox for new movies. The grocery a mile from us has 2 Redboxes.

Chloe, your download Netflix sounds great. I may check that out.

I have lots of pictures, but I am going to give someone else a chance to post of their interest.

jan said...

Chloe, I don't like watching movies I have seen before either. John likes to watch his favorites over and over again. We have all wood floors in our house so you can hear the TV all over the house - especially since he needs a hearing aid. I have to go down to our little finished basement to get away from the sound of the TV. Plus he likes to leave it on all day.

Don't get me wrong, I dearly love John, but we all have these little idosyncracies. When he is watching TV and I don't want to watch I just get to work on my quilt or I go run an errand. Sometimes he will mute the TV and read the subtitles - if he is in a good mood.

jan said...

Solar, we will miss you. Hope you have a good rest of the week.

jan said...

Carol, the Blockbuster close to us has gone out of business. I suspect Redbox put them out. I do like just renting one movie for a night and paying a buck-sixty for it.

jan said...

I have to brag a bit - hope you will forgive me. I have managed to "wean" myself off of sugary sweets (except for my choc chips last night). I have rarely had pie, cake, cookies, etc in the past 4 weeks - at my GD's 9th birthday party, I was served a piece of cake and had only 2-3 bites and left the rest.

Jan,

That great; that's what an exercise discipline can do for you.!! You used that ability to get out and exercise to get you off the sweats.

I have to do that again; started to eat a sweet everyday after dinner. I do work it off, but it has become a habit; and like S.S.S. say's...."baby steps"......
