The saga of my Summer flowers

Decided to try to grow some roses in containers this year...since planting a garden in the yard has proven unsuccessful....be it bugs, black spot or critters who love to lunch on any flower bud...

so home I came with three beautiful, fragrant roses, re-potted them in large containers & hoped for the best...as you can see the cats liked them too.... This pink rose is so very fragrant...well it was, right now after being attacked by aphids & Japanese beetles when I put them on the outside porch, they are starting to grow again...forget using those 'natural environmentally' safe sprays...the only way to get rid of pests is using the real deal chemical sprays...Right now the roses have grown lots of new buds & hoping in a couple of weeks, we will have flowers again....

In the meantime, this spring was pretty nice

for my clematis vine...it grew really well

& for the last couple of weeks these were the

blooms it produced.....

Along with the clematis vine, pansies did well too...

Oh, & my little buddies are here daily to snack

on the bird seed I throw out for everyone....

While watering the impatiens one day, I saw

a green spider in her web & if you look close, you can see some of her web in the water spray (Ivy, reminded me of your spider's web)

The impatiens are growing nicely so far....but the beautiful begonias that looked like roses when I planted them & placed them on my front steps are gone...the victim of too much

rain recently (they should be kept on the dry side or they rot) they were looking so good...then gone....

So much for the summer flowers....

I like flowers...so I keep trying to grow some...mostly not to successful...here as
spring turns to summer the colors of flowers
change...not sure about other places(remember we have a short growing season)...here
the first spring colors are the forsythia, daffodil yellows, whites, pinks, lavenders azaleas, rhoddys, lilacs, iris, tulips, then as summer arrives the colors get brighter & deeper reds, yellows, oranges & as summer comes to a close chrysanthemums bronze, golden
oranges, sunflowers lookingskyward....Mother Nature sure has a plan....no one does it better...

What beautiful flowers and a wonderful summer post Coreen. You can tell you have some nicer weather there. My stuff all looks like the rest of us here feel, burned out.

Coreen said...

Tonite on the local news, they said we have had 20 days of 90 or more since April...very
unlike summer here...& we have another month to go...

Carol, but you have gardenias growing wild...I would love to have them here...

I have some luck with the New Guinea impatiens
that I put in pots & leave at my garage doors...the begonias were really pretty, but
all the rain last week got them all soggy & rotted...I'm hoping the container roses manage
to bloom at least one more time...

Thinking about getting some sunflowers for
the empty pots, & then later some mums for the
fall on the front steps...

I read the 'lazy states' post...I guess no
surprise that where weather is warmer for longer periods of time...people are more laid back...not so hectic....& what's your saying
'let the good times roll'...

Don't know about CT in that report...only found the top 20 & CT wasn't there...didn't find the entire list...

Carol said...

I saw your New Guinea impatients. I grow the regular kind. I think your's are more heat and sun tolerant. The ones I grow need lots of shade. I do have good luck with the regular one. I don't grow any Begonias. Never was too crazy about them.

I still have some Petunias, from the winter, going. They are a little haggard looking but still alive. In our heat, it's hard to keep anything going.

Carol said...

I don't think I totally agree with that survey. Since we have such a high illiteracy rate here, the people taking the survey probably couldn't read the questions and answer them correctly or was it a phone survey? If it was a phone survey, the only people who still have a land line probably don't work, don't leave home and do watch TV all the time.

Coreen said...

I used to plant regular impatiens in the yard,
but they never got full until the end of summer...& since the ground here is like a rock
no more...
the New Guineas need shade too, they do get
sun in the a.m. until about noon, & they droop
really fast, I water them just about every day...& feed with Miraclegro often...they should last through september...

I have tried petunias, but they get too leggy,
right now the pansies are like that, just about finished....can't plant tulips or daylilies, the deer chomp on the buds instantly...

Did you ever try daylilies...they have lots of different colors now...stargazer the most famous, has a very strong fragrance, the white with the pinkish center...they are impressive when they grow...

I'm guessing the rain stopped...no flooding...

Carol said...

There are lots of daylillies around here but I have never grown them. This year I only have the impatiens and the left over petunias. I still have my herbs going. Most are at least a couple of years old. They even made it thru our harsh winter.

I have lots of shade around and under the camp so I grow lots of caladiums. They seem to tolerate the heat well.

Carol said...

Tell us the name of those two kitties hanging out by the roses.

Carol said...

It finally stopped raining and I had a little over 3 and 1/2 inches in my rain gauge.

Coreen said...

My 2 Calicos, the one in the back is Cassie, who has the best disposition, and upfront is my baby girl Fluffy...who is as soft
as fluff, thus her name...both have green eyes,
Fluffy's are very green, Cassie's pale...My other cat is black with golden eyes...Kit Kit...who hates Fluffy, so they can never be
near each other...creates a bit of a problem...
All 3 are rescued, & girls... Cassie from the Easton animal shelter, Kit Kit & Fluff wandered into the yard at different times & could not let them stay in the woods fending for themselves...so they now rule the house....
Well its that time...see ya....

jan said...

Coreen, Your flowers are lovely. I dearly love roses and have never grown any. I have some little flowering bushes but no real flowers. I am not a gardener. I am enjoying yours. I can tell that you really love your kitties.

jan said...

Carol, thats a lot of rain!

jan said...

Coreen, neat spider. I blew up the picture and can see the spider. Never seen a green one before.

jan said...

I have been working on GD's quilt most of day. I am tired. Back is much better.
Good nite Carol, Coreen, Chloe, Ivy, Solar

Carol said...

Cool Cats Coreen! Along with very cool pics and post. You guys have come a long way baby. World class pics. Makes mine look pretty lazy. Oh, that's right. We are!

Carol said...

I still don't agree with that survey. People here aren't lazy. Hey, they even work hard when drinking their beer. It's work people. Ya got to go get it. It may take several trips to the store, just in one day, OK. In order to get that case in, there is a lot of arm moving going on. Then think of all those trips to the bathroom.

We even work hard at our recreating. When I have a party, I have to go to work to rest up after. Hunting and fishing, that's work people. Ya ought to see how much work it is just to buy all my fishing gear at Walmart. Then there's dusting it....oh, I forget, I don't do that. Not since Ivy told me it's best that I don't dust, unless I must.

Carol said...

On a more serious note. Ya might think of the person that contributed that war info to that Wikileaks as a traitor but I think that he/she is a hero or heros. They admit that the info was nothing that would compromise safety/security. Whoever it is/was, is/was in harm's way. They are/will probably face severe punishment, maybe be in prison for life. But they are trying to keep us from forgetting that there is a senseless war going on. One that history already told us we can't win.

We sit over here and really don't spend much time thinking about those over there who are sacrificing their lives every day. We really don't, unless one of them belongs to us. There are people who are making money on this war while many are dying or having the rest of their lives destroyed...but we don't want to worry our pretty little heads about it. What can we do anyway? Better not to think about it. That's what our politicians and those making money on this war are banking on.

Who's lazy people? This entire country is, we all are. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Carol said...

Coreen, who does your mowing?? And how big an area requires mowing? Looks like there could be a lot of weedeating also. Our grass grows fast here. If it rains, the grass will need mowing every week. The mowing starts in March and doesn't stop until way into November. I wonder if they considered that in that survey?

Jan, I did get a lot of rain yesterday. My gauge measured 3 1/2 inches but with all my trees over my place, that was less than what I probably got. Also, the way it rains around here, you can get different amounts of rain from the front to the back yard.

Carol said...

After reading that La. ranked high in TV watching yesterday, I called Dish Network to make sure mine was optimal. I'm now going to get local channels from my dish, so I don't have to balance my tv antennae on 20 books, by the window, to try and get reception for those channels. I sometime need one of those books.

I also opted for the high definition reciever. They are coming Sunday to do it. Whoopee.

Anonymous said...

Gorgeous pictures and post Coreen! You've done a great job with those flowers. Also, those close up shots are stunning.

Best of all - your beautiful cats.

Anonymous said...

... Carol asked about the lawn mowing, but I was wondering about those big rocks bordering your property. Who hauled those in, and placed them so attractively? I love rocks so much, and we'd really have to search here to find any that large.

Anonymous said...

"the way it rains around here, you can get different amounts of rain from the front to the back yard. "

Same here Carol. It is so cool to be driving along in completely dry weather, then cross a street the next minute, and it's pouring. I never saw that happen until we moved here.

ps That high definition receiver you're getting makes a BIG difference.

Anonymous said...

Jan, glad to hear your back is doing better. I'm hoping you show us a pic of your quilt when it's done (am wondering if that's been hard on your back too).

(I sure am impressed with how you keep taking classes and learning new things so often. )

Carol said...

Chloe, Jan is a
class a holic. Like many others I know who
spent so much time
going to school, she gets
anxious when she's not. I bet it
is nice not to have to worry about getting an A in those classes.

Carol said...

Did anyone notice that we had another little square in the followers list? I looked to see who the new square represented and it says August Aanderson. I know it's only July but August, you are welcome to add your two cents anytime your ready! Due to our troubling economic times, we keep it real cheap. If you're a big spender, throw in a nickel.

Carol said...

Oh, and Leo the Lion, AKA Solar, keeps the rule book for the site. The rest of us don't know what the rules are until we step on one then he lets us know.

jan said...

Chloe, How observant you are. I had to go back and look at the pictures to see the rocks. They are big rocks. They look like rocks from my grandpa's farm in OK.

Carol, LOL about being a class-a-holic - I was just telling John that if I had to go back and take classes now I would fail them. Sitting in that 2 1/2 hour class this morning was torture. I would rather learn in a class than read an instruction book. I like reading stuff I want to read but not those that have instructions.

jan said...

I thought I needed a class to do the machine quilting on the GD's t-shirt quilt. I think I can do it now. I actually did not learn that much in class. She taught some other things that were helpful and some I already new. The main thing is I am getting comfortable with this machine.

jan said...

Chloe, I like your new avatar. Really cute pic of Emma.

Carol, there was a .......fly on my front porch this morning. I wondered if you were coming to pay me a visit. My memory is going - can't remember the first part of the name of it - your avatar.

Carol said...

Only problem with rocks is that, where there are rocks, they must be weedeating. Can't mow close enough to them. I created my monster yard at the house when I was young. Evidently I didn't realize I would get old and still have to take care of it.

Even when I was young, pull starting that yard equipment kicked my butt. I ended up with muscle spasms every Spring when I had to get out that equipment and start up it up after it had been sitting up all Winter. My muscles had been sitting up all Winter also.

Carol said...

Whew. I thought you were calling me a fly. Am I that pesty??

It's a dragonfly Jan. Or some people down here call them mosquito hawks cuz they eat mosquitos.

Coreen said...

Rocks! we have lots of rocks, boulders, stones...stone walls too...New England has
old broken stone walls everywhere...that's what
the farmers did way back when with the rocks
they dug up clearing their lands...built walls
that are the boundaries of the property....

My property was created from the woods that
surround me...so when the builder was excavating, the rocks were used to support/border the driveway from the wooded
area (some of which is wetlands that can not be
built on)....

A landscaper mows the grass weekly from May through October, depending on the weather & then in November removes the leaves(more acuurately he has mexicans working for him, he shows up once in awhile...they ride big loud mowers & walk with trimmers/blowers...all done in about 15-20 minutes)....Not sure how big the grass area is....big enough & most of it is now crabgrass & needs to be re-seeded which is another big project since I would need more
topsoil spread because I have terrible dirt, here the best time to plant new grass is in the fall...

Carol said...

Coreen, I was having difficulty picturing you out weedeating, little lady. Those things require gas!

Coreen said...

Carol, I couldn't mow this lawn ever...don't have a lawnmower, just an electric leave blower
that I use to cleanup, blow out the garage, but the bulk is done by the landscaper....

The fact that I have shoveled my entire 500 ft
driveway of snow in the past continues to amaze
me, but I can't shovel if it is more than 2" since picking it up is just too heavy...it gets harder every year...I rely on the guy who plows, but there have been quite a few
times I did the whole thing...each year I say
I can't do it again...the thought alone makes
me hurt...

Carol said...

Thinking about that makes me hurt also.

Carol said...

I'm past my shoveling days, unless it's just a few shovel fulls.

Carol said...

Here's his chance to make it big!

Carol said...

Bases loaded, a perfect missed opportunity.

A friend just called and told me that ESPN will interrupt the game they are airing every time A-Rod gets up to bat until he hit his 600. And I've been watching a stick figure just stand there.

jan said...

I thought the word was dragonfly - but wasn't sure. That is the first one I have seen here. when they fly, it is almost like hearing a soft whisper.

Coreen said...

You can be pretty funny girl!....

And did you know that each time Alex comes to bat they are changing the balls pitched to him
MLB authenticators ready for A-Rod's 600th homer

Carol said...

Jan, we have thousands of dragonflies out here. All colors. There's a phone line coming to my camp, even though I have no land line out here. Sometimes the entire wire is full of dragonflies, all lined up like they're on a runway waiting for take off.

Coreen said...

Close but its a double off the wall in the right corner...He will probably get another at bat though...

Carol said...

Coreen, I just got to see the real thing on ESPN. This is hard work, for a lazy Lousianian, to keep up with that A-Rod.

Carol said...

My, scheduled for, recording of that "Wormhole" program just cut into my chasing other TV programs. I guess I will head to the bedroom to add my bedtime chores to the mix of multitasks I'm engaged in. Phew!

Carol said...

Dang the bedroom is recording "Hot in Cleveland", a cute series with Betty White. I guess the NYY could also be considered "hot in Cleveland" tonight.

Carol said...

I read that Rosie O thought that it wasn't very presidential for Obama to go on "The View" even though she was happy for her ex co-hosts for getting him on their show.

Carol said...

I was talking about that extra ball the catcher got...

Coreen said...

A celebrity not a leader...that's the problem...

That should be it for Alex tonite...What did Scarlett say...tomorrow's another day...

and that goes for me too...nite all...

Carol said...

That's interesting about how those balls are marked for authenticity. It's a good thing that 600 doesn't come up that often. Is this going to be a record for BB, Coreen? That may be a dumb question but when it come to BB, I'm pretty dumb.

Carol said...

"A celebrity not a leader...that's the problem..."

You talking about Obama or A-Rod, or both maybe?

Carol said...

Anyone see that report that, hands only, CPR is as effective as mouth to mouth when attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation. That's not the first time I heard that. New guidelines are suppose to be coming out in October. I wonder if they will change the procedure for health professionals? (This does not refer to infant/children since respiratory arrest is more common in them)

I don't think that too many people are very comfortable with mouth to mouth, these days, anyway. One problem has always been the problem with filling up the stomach with air, when doing rescue breathing, if the head is not tilted correctly, or even if it is.

Anyone here ever have to do CPR out in the community? Working as a nurse, in the ICU/CCU, I have participated in
CPR on a good many occasions. Mary and I also had to do it once when we were visiting mom in the hospital. Mom was in one of those semi-private rooms and we heard the sitter, sitting with the woman in the other bed, say something that indicated that there was a problem. We both jumped into action. Being that we were in a hospital, we didn't have to do it for long. We did bring that old woman back and she probably hated us for it. We might have snatched her from the light. I heard that lady did end up dying a year or so later.

Anyone want to bet on whether any of the ladies on The View will ask the Pres any tough questions? Maybe Elizabeth?? The rest of them will probably just drool.

Carol said...

Does anyone else think that all these oil spill incidents is the Universe trying hard to tell us something? We do seem to all have a little ADD when it comes to our oil problems.

Carol said...

Senator Dodd was on Morning Joe and from what he said, it should be obvious, to anyone who is not blind, that he doesn't support Warren for that new consumer Czar position. He said that there might be too many objections to her nomination and that most people don't really care. He is soooooo full if it, that he stinks!! I haven't seen so much support for anyone in a long time. I haven't and don't trust him. He's the one who doesn't want her.

In MHO, we can see who to trust in our government by looking at who supports her and who doesn't. If they don't support her, they are suspect!!!

Also I want someone to find the almost 9 Billion dollars of Iraq reconstruction money that is missing. You can't hide that in a closet somewhere! Hold all paychecks until that money is found.

jan said...

I just taped The View. Will watch and see who asks tough questions.

jan said...

I had to do a choking rescue on John's granddaughter when she was 2. They were visiting us in LR. I thought I had everything that was a choking hazard put away. I had forgot some little alphabet letters with magnets on them on the fridge. Just completely missed them. She managed to get one and put it in her mouth. She started turning blue and her mother just handed her to me. I flipped her over and did the hand thumps on her back and it popped right out. Then I had to sit down - I was weak in the knees. She was a tiny little thing so it was not a problem.

jan said...

John's GD is 15 now, so she survived the choking thing just fine.

jan said...

I am so glad we don't have to do the mouth to mouth on resusci Anny any more. When I used to do CPR training and did that, blood vessels would break all around my lips and I looked weird for days after.

jan said...

Last August when John was trying to change a tire and fainted, I am so glad he was not having a heart attack, because I could barely call 911 - and was shaking so bad I could not even think of how to do CPR. When I tried to feel if he had a pulse, I could only feel my own pulse pounding through my fingers.

jan said...

"We did bring that old woman back and she probably hated us for it. We might have snatched her from the light."

Carol, interesting. The last time I saw my doc, he asked if I had filled out an "advanced directive"- they gave me the papers when I was leaving there. Really gave me a funny feeling. The papers are sitting beside me now. I have not done anything with them yet.

jan said...

Well, guess I will stop talking to myself and go do something constructive, like eat lunch.

jan said...

I'm back and watching my taping of The View. I thought I would give you some of my impressions. The first thing I noticed is that the women of the View are all dressed up and in white and black. Wonder if there is any significance to that????

Barbara Walters is back from her heart surgery for a guest appearance and she is on the Presidents right and it seems she is going to conduct the interview. The 1st question they asked was why he chose the View to make an appearance on the first daytime talk show? He said he wanted to pick one that Michelle watched.

jan said...

His first words were "This is fun"

Actually this is his 2nd appearance on this show.

jan said...

1st thing I notice about him - his air is greying

jan said...

Talk about "body language" All the women, except Whoop, have their legs crossed - toward the President.

jan said...

Ok, Whoopi has crossed her legs in his direction.

Anonymous said...

Jan, Great fun reading your critique of 'The View'! I'm not going to watch it, so especially appreciate the things you had to say, which were not only fun - but also funny. Thanks.

"I flipped her over and did the hand thumps on her back and it popped right out."

And Jan, Emma chokes so easily, and I've had to do that hand thumps on the back so many times - although it's always been food she chokes on. She's small and easy to quickly flip over too. Flipping her over and thumping her back came so automatically for me. I quickly do that without even

jan said...

I think it was a good appearance. I am sure you guys will have your opinions when you have seen the show or parts of the show. I have observed what you all have had to say about Obama. My opinion is that with what he had to deal with when he took office that the previous administration and president left - I believe he has done as well as any other person could have done.

Each of the 5 women had at least one question to ask him. Most were tough questions. Joy was the only one with more frivolous questions.

Anonymous said...

.. oops, I somehow hit post to soon.

(I quickly do that without even).....thinking (until afterward) and it's over before I know it.

Anonymous said...

Joy always goes for the jokes Jan.

jan said...

Chloe, it is so scary when they choke, isn't it? It is great that you know how to do those thumps. We ought to make it mandatory that every parent, before they leave the hosp with their babies, be able to do infant CPR and those hand thumps.

jan said...

"his air is greying" LOL, I guess his air, and his hair are greying. I just now saw what I had written.

jan said...

Chloe, glad to see you on here at the same time.

jan said...

Chloe, Joy asked Obama if he knew Lindsey Lohan had to go to jail. He said he knew that. She asked him what he thought Mel Gibson should have Anger Management. Obama avoided that question. Probably good move on his part. The women of the View decided he didn't know much about pop culture and he came back with " Well I knew about LIndsey Lohan."

I guess one of the reasons I like Obama is that he is a real dad with his girls. He talked a lot about the girls on the show. In most of his speeches he talks about his family. A man who is truly involved in a positive way with his children will get my vote. This man has to be thinking about what life will be like for future generations.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I'm sorry. We had a little mishap here, and I had to jump up from the computer. Wouldn't you know it, I was glad we were here at the same time. I'll catch up now.

Anonymous said...

I didn't take the CPR class Jan. I meant to, but never did. I figure the thumping thing was something I remembered from the first two times around, but for some reason I don't remember having to do it before. Emma's my first choker.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I thought you wrote his hair is graying the first time. Have you noticed that? How when we're reading others posts, that the brain automatically reads it as it was mean to be. I rarely notice others mistakes, if there are any.

Anonymous said...

You know Jan, my main problem with Obama, is that I didn't and don't think he's qualified for the job. There's never been any doubt that he's a nice guy, a good family man and a wonderful father. There were just a lot of bad feelings during the election, because he was selling himself as more (and something different) than he is. Actions speak so much louder than words to me.

Still, I understand what you're saying, and can see why you have so much respect for him.

Anonymous said...

... again, sorry to have disappeared on you.

Carol said...

Very neat observations Jan. I love them. Now I can't wait to watch the show. I'll probably notice more because of this discussion.

I like Obama, the man. One of the things I like the most is that he is such a good role model as a family man/father. I use that with my AA guys at work. I also use the fact that an AA is our President so they can aspire to things that they may not think they are capable of. I tell them that being President might be a little too high for them. I certainly don't want to support any delusions!

Also interesting is your observations re: the group dynamics on The View. I remember that many of you, who worked in psych, talking about that in our faculty meetings, years ago. I remember that a person sitting on your right is the person who is the most supportive of you in the group. Is that correct? Now what is your interpretation of how the legs were crossed?

My biggest opposition to Obama was because he was too inexperienced and also because of some of his prior connections to shady characters. It also made me nervous that his running for President seemed to be something that was set up way in advance with that convention speech and maybe even the books he wrote. It was planned by the power players. I don't trust the power players.

Carol said...

And actually the number one reason I didn't want Obama was because.....he was not Hillary!

jan said...

Carol, when Obama won the primary over Hillary, I was so disappointed, I didn't think I would ever be happy with him as president. I do think he is a good man and trying to make good decisions . One of the things he said on the View today that I liked was that he was trying to make decisions that will have positive long term outcomes - not just immediate.

Chloe, I agree - that actions are what really counts in the end, not words.

I do think that Obama had so much to overcome that had screwed things up for the past 8 years. He is being blamed for the economic crisis, but he inherited most of that. He is being blamed for a health care bill that many people object to, but we have needed this for decades.

I think all of us here as well as all of us in this nation have different ideas of what we want our government to do. what I want is probably different than what you all want. I wanted the health care bill and I want regulation of the banks and I want us to someday have a balanced budget again like we had with Bill Clinton, and I want us to take better care of the environment and I want us to explore energy options and get off our dependence on oil. Obama talked about all of these issues today and what he is trying to do and I support his efforts. This is probably all you will hear from me about politics. I respect all opinions that do not agree with mine.

jan said...

Carol, Usually when people cross their legs toward another person, it means they are showing positive regard toward that person or at least listening to what that person has to say.

jan said...

There is something about sitting on the "leader's" right or left that has meaning, but I can't remember what that is about. Maybe someone else here knows about that.

Carol said...

Jan, I think that most all of us here, and around this country, want exactly what stated. The problem is that it can't just have the right words in the title of the action but not accomplish that action. ie health care reform. He says that everyone has access to health care??? I don't think so. Many still can't afford it.

We have a charity hospital here but it doesn't offer specialty care. If people need orthopedic or cardiac, etc, they have to travel to distant cities and many don't have transportation to do that. I get many in jail who haven't taken care of serious problems because they couldn't get to where those problems were treated. Some come to jail so we can carry them there.

Carol said...

I had a guy this week who was seriously down on his luck. He has diabetes, sky high blood sugar, and needed insulin. He was rooming with someone he found to take him in. It was a horrible situation. They were criminals but beggers can't be choosers. He turned himself in, for some prior offense, to get out of the situation and get some help.

He could go for health care but no money for the blood sugar monitoring equipment, the syringes, the insulin, etc. I told him that it was a good thing he came to us. We were his salvation. Jail to the rescue. It's getting more and more common.

We're only a temporary fix and then he'll have to come up with some solution. We don't have any social services to help work on that solution either. Some days I just want to cry.

Carol said...

And then I come home and distract myself by blabbering on this blog, waiting for A-Rod to get his 600 or anything I can find to that takes my mind away from it.

jan said...

Carol, I agree there are so many health problems that need attention. You do see the worst of them. It is sad. I hope the health care bill will help some of these folks that you are working with.

Coreen said...

You are entitled to relax...& waiting for Alex

feel sorry for you watching the stick figure,
but he is cute....

Oh, there have been 6 players to hit more than
600 so far ever, Ken Griffey being the last I think...so yes, it is a pretty impressive accomplishment...& yes all the whiners(Yankee haters for the most part) are still saying but, but, but...he used steroids...to which I still say 'give it a rest, get over it'....

and tonite the wait continues...a slow boring game so far...& they are losing right not 1 - 0...

And yes, Alex is a celebrity... but Obama's celebrity is based on well not much, so he's a nice guy...nothing changes the fact that he is not a leader...he's charming & likable (what was his phrase when said that about Hill)...but I just don't see him making the decisions...wonder who is really calling the shots...

Coreen said...

Oh he hit it straight center very deep, but no
cigar, but it gets a run in....score tied...

Carol said...

Coreen, since there is no game on ESPN tonight, no breaking in to watch the Rodster. Back to stick figure or better yet, maybe when it happens, I'll catch it on a rerun.

Carol said...

Or even better yet....I'll let you describe it to me. You make a pretty good game announcer.

Carol said...

Someone told me that Chelsea Clinton is a veggan. Anyone else hear that? I had to google it to see exactly what that means. It said, no animal or diary products. If that is true, do you think her wedding reception will be veggan?

Carol said...

Just found the answer to my question. It will be vegetarian, gluten free and grass fed organic beef. Those furry guys slipped in there Coreen.

Carol said...

I think I could do vegetarian but I definitely wouldn't want to cut the cheese.

Coreen said...

I don't consider myself a vegetarian really...I just don't eat fur coated animals...
I love milk, real deal, not the 2% or whatever,
pizza covered with schamozz cheese,(mozzarella to you non-Bpt natives) gorgy cheese...I eat veggie burgers...actually they
are not bad when you put ketchup & pickles on
the roll...

Isn't gluten something with grains? wheat, not
sure what it does to people...an allergy of some kind?...

Alex flew out in the 5th still a tie game...told you a slow boring game so far...

Coreen said...

"but I definitely wouldn't want to cut the cheese"

Don't remember if you said you watched 2-1/2 men(I think Jan did) but there is a silly episode about charlie writing children's songs...one song is "who cut the cheese, blea, who cut the cheese blea"... it drives his brother alan crazy because Charlie starts to make a lot of money with these kids songs...

Coreen said...

The captain (Derek...my absolute fav) comes through....a single to center scoring Bret Gardner from third in the 6th...to give the Yanks the lead 2-1...they have had so many men on base every inning & not scored...

Carol said...

That's funny Coreen. So no homer yet. I got tired of the stick guy. I'll just wait for the replay.

I gots to have my gluten also. I'm not giving up bread. I could live on bread also, but not just any bread. It has to be a real tasty bread and with lots of butta.

Carol said...

That Cano looks like their best hitter. He has the best batting avg.

Carol said...

Maggie likes bread also. I like this Como loaf they sell at Walmart. When I toast that up, Maggie come a runnin to get some.

Carol said...

Coreen, just curious, do you wear leather shoes??

Carol said...

When I was reading about veggans, it said they don't wear any animal product either.

would eat bread....does she like butter too...
I have had a couple of cats who really liked butter...(real butter, not any of those substitutes--Land o Lakes salted for me....I like bread too...rye w/seeds, snowflake rolls, but my daily toast is either peppridge farm or thomas english muffins...

I am aware that true vegans do not wear any animal products often wonder what kind of shoes
they wear...

I wear birkenstocks (my feet were in such pain several years ago, I was hobbling in my high heels & started wearing birkis, now they are all I wear...I do miss my drop dead gorgeous high heal sandals though...I have a closet full of size 5s that I can not part with & can not wear)...some birkis have leather, some may be man made...

Alex is up again 7th...grounds out...

Robbie homers!!!! You are right Robbie has been
super this year...some say getting rid of his
buddy miguel cabrera helped him focus.....Yanks
now lead 3-1....

Carol said...

We need to check out Chelsea's wedding shoes. I read that she's been veggan since she was a little girl. Interesting.

I see a new Estes Park star. I wonder if Ivy's having fun and if she made it to the Dam store this visit??

Coreen said...

cervelli blop single scores bret gardner 4 - 1 ....bases now loaded still in the 7th, 2 outs...the captain is up...he walks & forces in another run, now 5 to 1 Yankees...

Is Chelsea a true vegan or just a sorta vegetarian....

Carol said...

She even learned to cook her own food. Hillary had the White House staff teach her how to cook her own fare and she received the Walter Scheib cooking school certificate.

Ok, its still the 7th, granderson drove in 2 more runs 7 to 1....bases are reloaded...guess who is up again...Alex gets a 2 out, 2 run
base hit...now its 9 to 1...but will have to
wait another day for that elusive 600....
would be surprised if Alex gets another at bat, but there are 2 innings left...

Carol said...

He still may have a chance.

Coreen said...

Would you believe 8th inning, now 11 to 1...bases loaded again, 2 outs &...Alex is up (3rd time tonite...but strikes out...

The Alex watch continues....more important (he will hit 600....maybe not until next week when they return to the Stadium)...
tomorrow Yankees play Tampa for 3 games in Tampa...right now Yanks are only ahead by 2 games so this will be a big series...

And its pumpkin time....good night...

Oh, I heard there was a big bed bug problem up in New York. I do hope they keep them up there. I don't think those bugs could stand the heat under the covers down here. If we had them, they would be hanging out on top of the covers sipping on some iced sweet tea.

I just heard someone ask and Ms Sherrod answer about her suing that jerk who tried to use her to get to the NAACP. She said she would sue him. I may be wrong but don't you have to be able to prove damages to sue?? Ms Sherrod came out of all this a hero. The jerk, came out of all this, a jerk. I think the Universe took care of him. That's one of those example of instakarma.

Coreen, am I wrong about having to prove damages? Ms Sherrod certainly has a right to be angry but I can't see any damages.

Carol said...

Nice to see you checked in Solar. Not only was that missing 9 bill. on the news but I heard that some of the institutions we bailed out with our tax dollars sent them overseas to bail out the banks over there. When will enough be enough?

I took the day off today. I have lots of stuff to do with SF, all my secretary/security had to be off today for planned or emergency leave, and I felt a serious confrontation coming that wouldn't have been pretty, so unpretty that I might have been looking for work. Peace be with me!

My Unity prayer for the day always hits the spot:

"Inner Peace
Centered in Spirit, I am at peace.
I am at peace when I remember how lovingly I am supported by Spirit. Sometimes I may get caught up in the drama of my own or someone else's experiences and lose my sense of inner peace. Once I become aware that my mind has strayed from Spirit, all I need do is mindfully take a deep breath. As I focus my attention on my breathing, I become centered in Spirit.

"Spiritus," the Latin origin of the word spirit, literally means "breath." When I breathe deeply, I feel my body relax and I am calmed. As I breathe in and out, I become quiet and consciously aware of the Presence. I listen for the voice within that knows what is mine to do. I right my thinking. When my mind is centered on Spirit, I am at peace."

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness.--Galatians 5:22"

And Solar, just wait, the Dick will get his. We may not ever hear about it but it will all come out in the wash. Having all those riches does not bring happiness even though some may think it will. We may think that we can buy it but....it ain't for sale.

Beautiful day in Estes Park, CO. Anybody ever heard of the Baldpate Inn? We ate there last night...world's largest collection of keys on display...also porches surrounded by humingbird feeders - my first ever Black-chinned hummingbirds, at least that I can positively ID. They are giant-sized comapred to my little rubies. Other birds attracted by the feeders - hairy woodpecker and Stellar's jay. Today I'm trying to ID the swallows...Tree or Violet-Green???

Carol, thank you for "Spirit." I sent that on to someone in addition to me who needs it for today...

I have decided to lay off Dick Cheney. He recently had VAD surgery, a kind of artificial heart. My cousin died from an infection from that while waiting for a heart transplant. That was a mere three years ago, although they say the mechanics of it have since improved.

I still don't like what Cheney did in the past or his ideas about "leadership" that don't jive with mine. It's my sense that he will be receding into to political background from now on. As long as Cheney decides to focus on his own health, safety and security from now on, and leave ours to younger and better leaders, I won't pick on him further.

Yummm... I just made the best stew I've ever had in my new electric (fool proof) pressure cooker. Once all your ingredients are in it, you just program in the settings, and it handles everything for you. I really love the thing. I went back for seconds, and probably will go back for more later today. Best of all there's plenty for today and tomorrow, so I won't have to cook again for a couple of days.

Carol, I also looked it up, to see if Chelsea is having a Vegan wedding - and she will be apparently, but will also be offering meat (organic, no less).

Her being a vegan was news to me (if I'd ever heard it, I'd forgotten).

“Chelsea is a vegan. The food will include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes, but there will also be grass-fed organic beef on the menu.”

According to the Vegetarian Star, Chelsea has been cutting meat and dairy since childhood — and leaned on White House chefs to help in preparing her vegan meals.

"Before Chelsea Clinton went off to Stanford, Hillary asked the White House cooking staff to teach her daughter how to prepare delicious vegan meals. But this was more than just a weekend of 'helpful hints'. Chelsea spent an entire six weeks learning the craft and upon completion, she received a Walter Scheib Cooking School certificate."

About the possibility of a lawsuit by Sherrod
as she is saying she will do...she may get an
attorney to start one (costs will be high) the
allegations may be that posting the excerpts of
the video held her in a false light, so it
liekly would be alleged as defamation/libel...raises issue of is she a 'public' person...& was the posting
done knowing it was false, &/or recklessly...&
yes there needs to be proof of some damage...
maybe a claim her reputation has suffered, but
in the end not sure if that is the case...though initially she was damaged by being forced to resign apparently that was rescinded...so bottom line...sure she may file
a suit but too many variables to know if it is
really a strong case...

I wonder if all the hype is just that hype &
whether in the end any action is filed....

Carol said...

We need the recipe, Chloe, for that best beef stew. I bought a regular ole pressure cooker a several years ago cuz it was on sale, for cheap, at Walmart. I've never used it. I really do need an electric one, out here, since all I have are hot plates for range type cooking. I will also need another room to store all the assundry appliances I use because I don't have the traditional range/oven.

Carol said...

Ivy, that is a neat place where you are staying. Are you going to try and catch the "funniest person in Colorado" show tomorrow night?

Glad you are getting some quality time with some new birds.

Your welcome on the sharing the "spirit". I needed it all day. It wasn't a bad day being with SF but it is the second time I've been with him that someone had tried to rip him off. It's really weird. Today, it was a checker at Market Basket. Last week, it was a lady at the Dairy Barn. He tried to just blow it off but I wouldn't let him. I'm starting to wonder if this happens to old people all the time or were we just lucky???

Jan, I always see the great big black hawks here where I live, but I went to look for a pic of one, and a page with different looking ones (from Texas) came up. Some beautiful owls on the bottom of the page too, that you will like Carol.

"Here we will have pictures of Hawks, and things that look
like them, like Falcons or Kites, and some things that aren't
even closely related but vaguely resemble them, like the
local cleanup crew, the Utopia Air Force, Vultures.

I quoted a little of what the guy who posted the pics had to say, because I liked it so much (sounds like a true Texan):
"It should be noted, that contrary to some local folklore,
most hawks and owls eat mostly snakes, mice, and rats, and therefore
you should consider them most beneficial to have around.
A couple hawks are grasshopper specialists, so also very beneficial.
Owls are better rat and mouse catchers than man or cat could ever be.
All birds of prey are "double protected" by federal law
which means your butt is going to be in a sling if you get caught
harming one. " HAWKS & SUCH

Jan, can't wait for the Hawk pics.

It was so nice to come home and read something besides me today.

Jan, This cooker was so easy to use, and to me there is no better flavor for pot roast, stews, etc., than what you get from a pressure cooker - very healthy too. I've used them on and off all my life - but never saw an electric one until lately. It looked a little like the rice cooker I got a while back that I like so much too. Perfect rice every time, and it has a timer that can be set for later too. All this stuff now adays is so electronic, it's sorta like a computer.

The pressure cooker I got is the the one on this page for $94.74. I ordered it with free shipping. I did see one a while back at Costco though, but I forget the brand and price of that one. Electric Pressure Cooker, Brushed Stainless and Matte Black
There's a video underneath it (on the same page) that show's how it works.

Hate to mention this but there's this guy on Countdown talking about that oil well in the Gulf. He's been on before and he is listed as an oil and gas expert. Name is Bob Cavnar. He is a 30 plus year energy industry veteran based in Houston. He said that well is still leaking and BP said it is not. He said before they went live with the cameras, they were cleaning oil off the well head.

He is VERY concerned about BP trying the top kill. He is concerned about the integrity of the well head. He wants them to wait until the relief wells are ready before doing the top kill. Yuk.
