Spring flowers in NM

Since we are getting close to 200, I will put up some pictures I took a couple of years ago in spring.

Beautiful pics Jan. Are there any flowers blooming over there yet?

I'm watching the basketball game and it's almost too exciting for me. My team is not doing well. I guess they needed Kevin Ware.

Carol said...

Louisville won but it wasn't an easy win.

jan said...

We watched the last of the game. It was an exciting last few minutes.

Yes, there are some flowers blooming but not the ones I shared here.

Carol said...

I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan. He's a tad too goofy for my taste but I was very impressed with what he wrote here.

I Never Wanted to Take Your Guns Away

Carol said...

I have written both of my critters, listed after that article, to express my desire to have better gun laws. It's really easy to do. One of my critters, Mary L. Landrieu, calls herself a Democrat. What a joke. She ought to be a Republican. If she ever has a real dem challenge her, I will vote for him/her.

My neighbor mows my yard here and did it yesterday. I have a few of those little wild purple flowers blooming in the front yard, similar to what Coreen put on her post. They are weeds but I was happy to see that he mowed and weed eated around most of them because he thought they were pretty. I like that about him. Most men would just mow over them.

Jan... thanks for the beautiful pictures. Our ground is still frozen and under 6 inches of snow. What a treat to see spring flowers!

We just got back from having breakfast at our local cafe. The couple sitting next to us were joking about how the groundhog, Puxatony Phil, must have been really fed up with being dragged out of his warm bed in the middle of winter. So he got even with us by predicting an early spring. That little rascal went back to sleep with a smile on his face.

I was pondering these sports problems with college athletics and came up with an idea. There ought to be an agency, supported by all college athletics, where a player or a lower level coach can report incidents of serious abuse. It can then be investigated and if found valid, reported to the hierarchy where action can be taken before it destroys so many people's careers and lives.

The person reporting should be able to maintain confidentiality and the report investigated. It just might keep all of them more honest and professional. It's obvious that players and lower level coaches fear, with good reason, for their careers if they report any serious problems. The cost of a program like this, if spread among all the colleges and universities, would be so much less than what these scandals end up costing the universities involved. Not only does it cost those universities involved, it affects their reputations for years.

I still see reports of temps in the upper 60s and 70s for your area this coming week Coreen. It's on Weather Underground. They do make some mistakes. Are you hearing anything like that? What about your area Renee? Any significant warmer weather due this week?

Coreen said...

Jan, I remember the wildflowers, columbine is one of them in your pics..I have tried to plant wildflowers, but
no success in getting them to return...

As for crocus, they are not considered wildflowers, they are perennial bulbs planted in the fall to come up in the spring...they will spread once established often into the grass, unfortunately, squirrels dig out the bulbs, so I gave up...they are one of the first signs of spring here...

Coreen said...

So far no reports of 70s Carol, it may reach mid 60s but with showers...I will be happy when the overnight temps stay about 35...which looks like may start this week...

Still haven't seen the other early sign of spring...forsythia...

Carol said...

Coreen, mine may not be crocus but they are a little purple wildflower that looks like them.

RebelliousRenee said...

Our temps are supposed to be in the 60s during the day... with night time temps being in the low 40s all next week. The ski area where Rick buys a season's pass is closing today. That closure is a sign of spring to me.

Coreen.... same thing has happened to us with squirrels eating our crocus bulbs. The garden up against the front of our house is a mess. Now that Rick is retired he's planning on digging everything up and starting from scratch this year. He's the gardner in the family... I get to look at all the pretty flowers and eat the yummy fresh veggies :)

jan said...

Renee, what a lucky girl you are. John and I are neither one gardeners. John has asthma so we don't chance him doing any outdoor work. I can do some outdoor work but pay for it later with back pain. I will do some in little spurts for 30 min or so and then ok as long as not too strenuous.

jan said...

Carol, I like your ideas about monitoring the sports programs.

jan said...

The last 4 pictures are plants that are indigenous to NM and require little watering. The next to the last plant is a butterfly plant (or so I am told) and is the only one in our yard. We have 2 plants like the last one but neither is blooming yet. They require little to no water and the hummers love the little blooms. We have 2 in our front yard and give us much pleasure in mornings watching the hummers feed from them.

jan said...

We have 2 of the 4th plant in our yard and they also require little to no water in summer.

The blooming cactus in in the yard down the block from us. It is one of my favorites.

The first 3 pics are from a garden on my walk. The man who tends this garden does a great job. It is the prettiest in our neighborhood.

jan said...

I said the "only" one in our yard. It is the only picture of a plant in our yard. We have quite a few plants in our front yard. We had some landscaping done about 3 years ago. I need to some planting as a few of the plants did not make it. I either watered too much or too little. I am beginning to understand each one's need for more water. We did zeroscaping in our front and have small pink rock where grass once was, and then some plants around the house. We have such a bad drought now that many more people in our area are zeroscaping.

jan said...

Lavender plants do well here because they need little water and they are great for keeping moths away.

jan said...

I am disgusted with the salaries paid to college coaches. I think there should be a cap on what the coaches are paid at the college level.

jan said...

Of course, sports are not my thing.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan... when we were in your city almost 20 yrs ago, we were told that many were converting their landscaping to native plants that required little watering because of drought conditions back then. It's kinda scary that it's still happening.

Carol said...

It wasn't the identity of my little purple flower that was the point of my comment but the fact that my neighbor, a guy, went to so much trouble to avoid cutting it down. My SF would mow down a rose brush if it was in his path.

Carol said...

Jan, I agree with you about those coaches salaries. The main purpose of a university is education. People forget that.

Carol said...

It's that disgusting amount of money involved that leads to those sport's scandals.

Carol said...

Jan, do you think that even the most brilliant professor would have lasted one day if he stuck his students or called them that homophobic slur, a "f"? Much less years like that guy did.

Carol said...

I struck up a conversation with this guy in line in front of my at Walmart. He lives not too far from where I live, Moss Bluff. He said that he sees Bobcats in his backyard all the time.

jan said...

Our basketball coach at UNM was making one million plus and was hired a week or so ago by UCLA for more than double his salary.

jan said...

Carol, my dad was like that too. If anything got in his way - vrrrom went his mower - figuratively and literally.

jan said...

Right Carol - when I first came back to UNM, one of our part time faculty who taught community clinicals was permanently retired because she said something controversial in her clinical group and a student complained she was offended. I am not sure what she said or the context but she had been a valued and intelligent full time faculty for years.

jan said...

Renee, when new homes are built here, there is a law that they can plant only a certain percentage of their yard in grass. I think it is 20% - but not sure. There are also trees that cannot be planted here. I get a little annoyed at the University because they plant so much grass - and not in areas that students or others can use for activities, etc. And this grass gets watered excessively. I walk past it every day and it p***** me off. I love the Native American philosophy here - they rarely water their cars. John listens to NPR here and there is a Native program and they are always talking about the Anglos and how we like keeping our cars so clean. It changed us. We seldom wash our cars now. I do like the interior to be clean and the windows.

jan said...

I meant "wash" their cars - LOL>

jan said...

People talk about a drought here - well, its a desert. What more can I say. A desert does not support our water-hungry humans.

jan said...

We once had a huge water table under ALB but it is slowly becoming smaller and the Rio Grande is not so grande any more.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan... LOL!... I like the idea of "watering" one's car :)

Yeah.... water hungry humans and the desert do not mix. For our 25th anniversary we went to Sedona, Flagstaff, and then to Page, AZ. We were able to take a boat ride to Rainbow Bridge.... but just barely. The water level in Lake Powell was way down. But the Marriott we were staying at had a well-watered golf course. I now hear Lake Powell is so low that that boat can no longer make it down the twisting canyons. The only way into Rainbow Bridge is to hike.

I may be bitchin' about all the snow we've had this winter.... but I'm well aware of how much it helps our water table. Especially since we are all on individual wells.

RebelliousRenee said...

Just watched a monster Red Sox game against the Toronto Blue Jays... Sox won 13-0. They hit six home runs.... 3 of which were hit by our third baseman. He missed hitting a 4th by only a few feet. It's waaaay too early to get too excited... but I'll enjoy it while I can.

jan said...

we have been to Flagstaff several times and Sedona once. It is time to go back. Flagstaff is like an oasis in this desert.

Carol said...

Anyone catch this in time ought to tune into last minute of women's game on espn

Carol said...

Next is Notre Dame and UCon. Final Four.

Carol said...

Louisville was behind almost the entire game and will win it. Kinda sad for Cal. They have a female coach. Really got into basketball. Used to love it when LSU had a team.

Carol said...

Coreen, you ought to check out your women's basketball team. They're hot.

Carol said...

After watching those two women's game in the final four, I'd predict UCon to be the winner tomorrow Seems the other teams weren't playing up to their potential. Notre Dame couldn't seem to buy a basket.

Coreen said...

It is a beautiful start to the day, about time...& this a.m. the weather people are saying inland
at least into the 70s for a couple of days...maybe not quite so warm here because of the Sound....we shall see...

Coreen said...

CT women's basketball is a big deal, have a couple of friends who
went to UCONN who are diehard
fans (both the men & women)...

Carol said...

Coreen, I checked multiple sites and they all predict 70 to 70+ for the next two days for your area. Get the short pants out.

Your girls at UCONN are impressive.

Carol said...

I just watched a video from SNL spoofing Rutger's. Funny but sad also.

Melissa McCarthy spoofs Rutgers basketball controversy on ‘SNL’

Coreen said...

Not only don't I have any seasonal
clothes out yet, but the heat is still on!!...

Renee, have a feeling you will be getting rid of a lot of that snow
this week...

Carol said...

Is 70 this time of year pretty unusual up your way??

Carol said...

Will having those kinds of temps in snow covered areas bring more potential for flooding??

Coreen said...

We have been not much over 50 so far, & just now getting into the 60s which I like...won't like to jump past the spring 60s & be summer right away...

70s can happen now, but that is more of an end of May into June temp...

Snow melting wouldn't cause flooding, its a gradual thing, the snow melts into the ground, the piles just get smaller, there may be some runoff water but not enough to cause flooding....

YES!!!!!!!!
2 yrs and 2 weeks almost to the day of my mother's passing.... I am finally done with her estate.

Went to the accountant this morning to sign off on the final taxes... didn't owe any, but still had to be filed.

Then went to the bank and slid the rest of the money left in the estate checking account to my own account. Shredded left over checks.... that's it... I'm done!

I wish you much luck on your adventure, Carol. It's a pain in the ass... but someone has to do it. I'm the oldest and the one that lived near my parents... so of course it fell to me. This will fall unto Rick when his parents pass for the same reasons. Oy vey...

Carol said...

Congrats Renee. At least there are two of you to share that burden.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol...
it's nice to have someone for moral support. But so much of what I've had to do over the last 2 1/2 yrs... starting when my mother fell... I had to do alone. Rick was working. Dealing with the nursing home, the social workers, taking her to doctors, being the contact for friends and family that wanted information, dealing with her mail and finances... and finally dealing with all the legalities of the estate were mine alone to deal with.

I know you know this... I've read all those post of you dealing with SF. But yeah.... having a friend like my husband to help with what he could, was and is wonderful. I truly hope you know how to take care of yourself.... and most importantly.... how to say "NO" if it's warranted.

RebelliousRenee said...

And on a lighter note.... today is opening day for the Red Sox at home in Fenway Park.

My mother was a HUGE Red Sox fan. I know she's happy for me for finishing her tasks and she's happy about the RS. I know she's smiling down at me.

Carol said...

I see that the RS are first in their division, so are my Braves. I know it's very early but it still gives them momentum. Sorry about the Yankees but they still have some of their best out. I'm a idiot when it comes to knowing anything about the sport of baseball but I worry that the Yanks have very expensive older team members. As I'm learning the hard way we don't get better when we get older. We just break easier.

Carol said...

Seems that Rutgers may have been feeling a little guilty in the role they may have played in not firing the coach. The AD got a pretty nice severance package:

"Pernetti and Rutgers agreed on a severance package giving him $1.2 million in salary, two years of health insurance, a $12,000-a-year car allowance and possession of a school-issued laptop and iPad, according to the Associated Press"

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-08/christie-says-mistake-by-rutgers-s-barchi-not-fireable-offense.html

Carol said...

I heard that members of the Board had seen those videos last year. The AD was made the scapegoat.

Carol said...

Saw my first Indigo Bunting today. Just one. They always come through in April. I'm lucky if I see just of few of them. They are my fav bird.

Indigo Bunting

Carol said...

Whatbird.com says:

"Indigo Buntings are actually black; the diffraction of light through their feathers makes them look blue. This explains why males can appear many shades from turquoise to black"

Don't look black to me.

RebelliousRenee said...

They don't look black to me either, Carol. I always thought they were indigo.... why else call them Indigo Buntings.

I won't see any here for about a month. They usually arrive around the same time as the Rose Breasted Grosbeaks .... can't wait to see them this year.

Carol said...

How long do you get to keep the Buntings Renee? Do they hang out up there? I get them for just a week or two. The Cardinals are pretty much the only really pretty birds we have and they are here all year. Nothing likes the heat of our summers. Even most flowers commit suicide when the heat hits.

Carol said...

Glad to see that the Yanks finally shook their, first game of a series loss, curse. Maybe their worm has turned.

Even happier to see that our teams are hanging on to their success.

Carol said...

I slipped away from watching the voice to watch the men's basketball championship. I was kinda pulling for louisville but didn't really care. When they got so far behind I figured it was over for them. Hah. They love come from behind action. I had forgotten how exciting basketball was. Time flies by when watching it. Happy to have the women to watch tonight.

Carol said...

Watched most of the Voice before the game. I feel sorry for Shakera. Most of the better talent wants one of the guys. Some should realize that when it comes to the battle portion of the show, a better talent is more likely to survive longer on her team since there will be less competition.

Carol said...

Anyone into watching golf here? The Masters is up this week. Tiger seems to have broken his curse or cleared some of his bad karma. I want to pull for him and do enjoy a tournament more when he's playing but he's still an SOB in my opinion. He still treats his fans like they have a disease.

RebelliousRenee said...

The buntings will be around until mid-July. The rose breasted grosbeaks will be here until fall. I love some of the birds that others consider "drab"... such as chickadees, nuthatches (especially the little red breasted), and titmouses. My favorites are the woodpeckers. We get the downy, the hairy, the red bellied... we even occasionally get the pileated.

I love the call of the oven bird.... rarely see them.... but hear them all around the yard.

RebelliousRenee said...

Coreen's Yankees will get some of their injured players back and they'll be battling for first place in the division. It's waaaaaay too early to count anyone out or anyone in at this point.

Carol said...

Renee, we have tons of those pileated woodpeckers, Woody Woodpeckers. I love to hear their call. It sounds sooo tropical. When I first heard their call, it took a while to find what was making that sound. They are huge birds. We have many of the other birds that you mentioned, here.

Carol said...

I'm trying to watch last night's DWTS and I'm crying thought most of it. It was a real tear jerker. So far Andy's hit me the hardest. Renee, since you don't watch the show, the dance they did was supposed to represent memories of the best year of their lives. The other dance that made me tear up was Jacoby's. Both were dedicated to their children. Andy's dance is far as I've gotten. Have to take a little break.

RebelliousRenee said...

OMG... I can finally see some patches of bare ground in my yard! It is so warm today that we've turned off our pellet stove and have opened up many windows to let the fresh air circulate.... YUM!

Carol said...

Coreen must be wildly looking for her summer clothes today. You are only a degree lower than it is here.

Coreen said...

It has been 76 since noon!!...sun is hot...& a warm wind from the south makes it a tad humid!...

DWTS...Kelly is my pick & fav, though my sentimental fav is still Ingo/Jax...

I have a red headed woodpecker just about every day...

Renee, was pretty sure the warm temps had to get to you today...& tomorrow too...since it is very warm here...

All star break is when I start to
get concerned with where my team
stands...right now, still wondering if Derek is going to play at all this year,,,don't like the outlook for him so far...

RebelliousRenee said...

Coreen... I'm with you... I don't really start looking at the standings in baseball until the all-star break.

I'll bet that's actually a Red Bellied woodpecker that you're seeing. The Red Headed is further south. The difference is that the RH 's head is completely red. The RB's head has a red streak that looks kinda like a mohawk haircut... but the sides of it's face is grayish white. The RB has a slightly reddish under belly.... hence it's name. See what google says.

Coreen said...

Let's go to the videotape so to speak...I put up a new post of pics of my very own Woody Woodpecker & you guys can figure out what kind he is...but guess what, he is still mine...Carol knows, I don't share!!...

Carol said...

Yep Coreen, he's yours!
