My Woody Woodpecker...heh,heh,heh,heh, heh..
Here's my Woody the woodpecker, who visits pretty much every day...the top two pics were just a few days ago, April 7, 2013 (you can see we have no growth on the cherry tree (or any other trees yet) & the last two were in the summer of 2011, he would walk down a large oak tree when I throw out the bird seed, talking all the way...the pic on the ground is where there are young beech trees alongside the driveway...

OK guys, you get to make the call...what kind of woody woodpecker do I have....
Oh & before I forget...I have to acknowledge the passing of Annette, my absolute favorite Mouseketeer...& yes I even had mouse ears with a pink bow!!...
And loved the silly beach party movies she did with one of my first hearthrob crushes...Frankie Avalon...one of my friends (the one I mentioned with the boyfriend who was an enforcer) was crazy about Fabian way back when & I loved Frankie Avalon...& I think I mentioned we saw them both in 2008 when the came here in their 'golden boys' show with Bobby Rydell...& they were all really good...the audience was full of balding, ponchy greyhaired guys & chubby gals!!!..but everyone had a great time...
And it's official...81 today in Bridgeport & that is a recordbreaker...came home & opened some windows & cats immediately made a beeline for the window sills, glooming the warmth from the sun...
Coreen... I was correct... that is a Red Bellied Woodpecker. I have several that come to my feeders daily also. They are relatively new to this far north. They've been coming up this far for about 8-7 yrs... it's now warm enough up here for them.
If you saw my tribute to Annette on TM, you know I was a fan also... my father took us to every beach movie she and Frankie made at the drive-in. He also took us to all of Elvis' movies at the drive-in. How I miss drive-ins.... they were fun!
It's your woodpecker but I have to agree with Renee. Looking at this chart I'd have to say that it's a Red bellied woodpecker. I don't see any red belly on your's and not much on the reference pic.
Woodpeckers with red heads
I have that Red-bellied woodpecker here also.
They probably had to give that woodpecker a different name since there was another red head that had more of a red head.
Another pic of the Red-bellied woodpecker:
What Bird, Red Bellied Woodpecker
Yeah... my understanding is that they chose that name because the red bellied has a very slight tinge of reddish color on it's under belly.... you can see it on the live pictures from your second link.
I LOVE woodpeckers. I used to say that if I ever became an ornithologist, I'd specialize in woodpeckers.
I have a hard time with warblers.... there are too many... some with such small differences you need binoculars to see it. If someone asks me about a warbler I just say... "I don't know... they confuse me."
Looking forward to the NCAA women's basketball championship game tonight. I'll have to be cheering for Louisville because they have never won. You guys know how I love the underdog. UNCONN has won many times.
I'll have to catch my other two fav shows on the Net later. I really don't like watching DWTS result's show anyway. I'll just check later to see who gets the boot. Not sure who it will be. It might ought to be Lisa because I think she's ready to be out of there. She won't hold up much longer. She's probably praying that she is going or maybe she will just opt out anyway.
Coreen, when did you take last two pics?
Beautiful little woodpecker and great pictures Coreen.
I love woodpeckers. We have some here and we had some just outside our bedroom window in Little Rock. I like their little rat a tat tat sound too.
We watched the Voice last night and are watching last night's DWTS now. The dances are lovely. My favorite is The little girl from Disney. She is amazing. I liked Kelley Pickler's dance too. The music "Halleluja" makes me cry every time.
My favorite judge on the Voice is Usher. He is a sexy guy. I like Shakira. He is very natural.
I meant "she" obviously.
Several friends really love Mad Men. I taped it and watched it but not too wild about it. Maybe because I remember those years.
Halleluja gets to me also but that's the song Andy danced to and I was touched by his tribute to his daughter so I was crying before I heard the song.
Yep, Kellie and Miss Disney are pretty and perfect. Nice to watch, blah blah.
I was sad about Jacobe's story about never having known his dad. That's sad. So many lower socioeconomic
AA youngsters grow up without a dad. Id have thought that his dad would have come around now rhat he's a big football player but I guess not. Maybe he's in jail.
I was worried that I might be disappointed in the new judges for the Voice. I like them soooo much better and I read that viewership was up.
Glad you guys are enjoying your singing and dancing shows.
Rick and I are leaving shortly for the art museum in our largest city, Manchester. We are members and take in every exhibit that comes. Right now it's about Samurai armor and artifacts. They also have a Claude Monet painting that is on loan from a private collection.
I love the museum... and sometimes it's just nice to get outta this one horse town and see some civilization.
Carol, I sent you something on email. It is a link to Willie Nelson singing on the Grand Ole Opry in 1965. It is priceless. Will you post the link here? Thanks.
Listening to Willie Nelson this morning, I realize what is the most important quality for a singer to make it big - A distinctive voice, one that you recognize instantly when you hear him/her sing. Willie has that in spades. I have several CD's of his. His music never gets old for me. Karen Carpenter had it too. Adele has it.
Link Jan wanted posted:
Willy Nelson
Jan, you can just copy your link and paste it here.
Ok, was out near the AT&T store today and finally got the iphone 5...
Now I just have to figure it out, well at least I know how to charge the battery!!!...
Coreen... now you've left me all alone here as the only one without some goddamn newfangled phone... grrr
seriously... enjoy it... after you figure out how to use it... :)
OMG Jan... I didn't even recognize Willie... but yup... I did recognize his voice.
I just closed my eyes while listening and pictured Willie with his now signature long white hair.
Thank you Carol. I thought someone here might enjoy it.
I agree Renee, I would not have recognized his face, but when he started singing, there was no doubt.
Congrats Coreen on the new phone. I am getting used to my new phone.
Carol, all the alleged-stars on DWTS have stories to tell. I liked Andy so much better this week.
I think the right person from DWTS went home this week. I think Lisa was not having a good time. She seemed in pain on several levels.
Carol, the 6 contestants on Idol are singing Carpenters' songs. Boy do they take me back - especially to our summer in Pineville. Oh Dear!
ok, I was mistaken - they are singing Burt Bacharach songs - I guess the Carpenters sang a lot of his music.
Oh good on you Coreen for getting a phone. Now you need to use it. Make sure you have a text package. You will probably use more than you think. Works when you have a short thought to send but don't need to call or email. Watch that auto correct. It can be helpful or a real pain. Send me your cell number by email.
Also recommend the Otter Box. It has saved my phone. I drop it all the time.
My phone substitutes for my laptop often. Not a great substitute.
Renee, I've always needed a cellphone because of being constantly on call for those 11 years. I didnt have a choice. I worry what all that time with those phones to my ears have done to my head. I haven't noticed any alterations in my thinking yet but I do have a strange change in the shape of my skull between my ears. I very seldom use my phone except on speaker because I worry about that. I do believe they can cause damage to those who have to use them very often.
Then I needed a smartphone. It took forever to get a decent computer in my office at work. They didn't give a shit about medical. We were just a necessary evil. I used my phone as my reference That was almost impossible because the building blocked my signal. That job took a significant toll of my health but I held it together because I had to. Most of the trauma hit me when I left and finally could relax. At times I'm not sure I'll survive the aftermath.
I've used my phone to post here for a while now. Can't sit up to my laptop. Very slowly recuperating from last injury. If I didn't have animals that needed me, I probably would have died in my chair by now.
We're having a big thunder boomer right now. I've been waiting for it. It took it's time getting here. Maggie is shaking in my lap. Hopefully it will pass fast. Its always more of an intense experience up here in the tree house. The river is already above flood stage because of a couple of days of strong south winds. That can blow up the river without any rain. A strong north wind can blow it out. I think the wind has switched to the north Hope so.
Well, I think the worst has passed. Now mostly rain.
Coreen, the weather we're getting now was stretched from the south in Texas to your area last night. I think it's what cancelled the Yankee's game last night.
It will probably also end up interrupting the Master's tournament this week. I'm looking forward to watching it. I think I'll pull against Tiger even though I'm glad he's in it. He's still a dick. If he would be a decent dick I could pull for him.
Carol... you don't have to justify a cellphone to me...
I'm perfectly fine with anyone choosing to use one. We happen to be in a situation where we don't need a smartphone and it's expensive data plan. Any one else who chooses different... go for it... we choose to spend our money another way.
For instance.... we do have the premium package from Comcast.... I want all the HBOs and all the sports channels. We no longer have a DVR, however.... we had one for years... found out we were paying an extra $30 a month for it and never used it once.
But isn't that what having choices concerning electronics is all about... you pay for what you use and want and I pay for what I use and want.
It seems that when someone starts out as an AH no amount of hardships that they create for themselves changes that. Can you think of anyone famous who have had a change in attitude/heart after suffering the consequences of their bad behavior. I'm sure there has to be someone. Ponder on that and get back to me.
Carol...
I really hope your health gets better. It can't be fun with all those aches and pains. Yeah... it does look like God... in all her infinite wisdom... gave you those cats for a reason. :)
Enjoy your golf... I'm not into it...
Renee I pay for a DVR but it's at my house. I've learned to live without it. I think it only adds 5 bucks to my bill. Without it , I'm more tied to being in front of my TV.
Carol...
I can't think of a modern day person.... but I do know that St. Francis of Assisi started out in life as a rich asshole... had an epiphany and changed...
So I guess it can happen... but I'm sure it's a rare thing.
Gonna go run some errands now....
see ya later...
I didn't/don't watch the movie channels when I had them. That's a waste of money for me. Haven't even watched Netflix in a while but did so much the first free month that I had it so I'll keep it for a while. I feel I owe it to them.
Heck Renee, he was a saint. I guess if a person can change their evil ways, they end up qualifying as a saint. LOL
Where to start...would not have known that was Willie Nelson...all I can say is he has not aged well...but then he had lots of potholes along the road...
Weather that was in Cleveland last night made a quick pass here, but the next big storm is supposed to be Friday, rain storm all day soaking...
The Masters worth a look just to see the azaleas/rhodys blooming (that is if they are in bloom this week, usually they are)...As for Tiger Woods, if he can win it, good for him, & since Jack Nicklaus is ok with Tiger winning more majors than he has, its ok with me...don't have any 'new favs' with golfers, my favs are all 'seniors' now...
And the iphone...did manage to hear siri once, but couldn't get her back again...put 3 phone # in contacts, but my friend says I'm supposed to just 'sync' it with my contacts in my computer(well I don't have everyone's phone & in my email contacts, apparently I'm supposed to!!!...she says she can't 'go without' her iphone...if I ever got to that point in life, just send me to the
'funny farm'!!...
Wanted to get a song for the ringtone...well that was like writing a freakin novel...you have to open an account with the apple
store & needless to say...it did not go well...didn't like my choice of passwords...wants a complicated one using upper case, lower case letters, numbers & at leaest 8 characters...that wasn't enough(never managed to get an acceptable one!)...had a list of 'questions' to answer for 'security' & the final straw was you needed a 2nd email 'rescue' email in case your main email address wasn't adequate (who knows why) well needless to say at that point I pressed cancel
& don't have an 'apple account'!!!...
never mind that I couldn't get the thing to stop vibrating when I was listening to the ringtones built in...(I think I finally shut that off, but not sure)....
And while the iphone gives you a fancy little slick "Hello' foldup
'quick start guide' (with minimal directions) but with color pics of what the iphone can do...it doesn't provide a real user guide...(I really have hated the trend by these companies to intentionally not provide user info with the product)....I did print out directions for some of the functions (though the explanation is seriously lacking in simplicity)...& yes, the nice young guy who sold the iphone at the att store emailed me a thank you & the 'form letter' says just give him a call for any help I need...& there were at least 5 identical emails from att saying oh great you want to check your updated service, which I could not do because again you need a name & password, yada, yada, yada...
I'll let you know if & when I finally make & receive a phone call...as for texting...yeah right...
Yes Coreen, there is a big learning curve with your first smartphone and I'm still in it and I'm on my second. I learn things by trial and error, mostly error.
Coreen..... ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
I laughed so hard that Rick came over to see what the hell was so funny. I read him your posts.... he was laughing his ass off too.
Now he wants to say "thank you" to you... says it just reinforces why... well that and the expense... for not getting one. :)
Wow... it looks like the gremlins have eaten Craig's site again. I couldn't get in this morning.... went and did some grocery shopping.... and still can't get in.
See.... Coreen... you aren't the only one that gets screwed over with this technology stuff.
Coreen, do you know any 3 to 12 year olds who you can call on to tutor you? Email me your cell number so I can call and or text you. You learn by doing and doing and doing.
Renee, thought you would get my cynical take on the 'iphone
experience'...& I did remember that you mentioned that one of Rick's qualities was his ability to 'bridge' the gap between us mere mortals & the geek squad....
Carol.... doing and doing and doing is how anyone learns anything in life. Should have seen my first piece of weaving.... it's a wonder I attempted a second one.
I think one really has to be interested in something to go through that learning curve.
I think what really frustrates us "oldies" is when something that was so simple becomes complicated in the name of it can do more. Imagine if it took the kind of learning curve to use a new car as it does to use a new phone. And yes... I do remember the frustration of learning how to use a computer. But I really really wanted to learn to use one.
Coreen...
I could hear your voice the whole time I was reading those posts.
Yeah.... Rick has a degree in English and Library Science.... he knows how to explain stuff in common language.
I've never seen the first instruction for using the iPhone. Even if I found some, it might not help. When I found some for my camera, it didn't help much. I think that some of this stuff made in foreign countries have instructions that were translated from another language and lost something in translation. There are probably things that I still don't know about my phone.
Coreen, I empathize with the new phone stuff. I have been trying for days to find where I can retrieve "voicemail" on my phone. Finally found it at the end of my "contact list."
Carol is right though. It just takes playing with the damn thing.
We were visiting my son and family for Easter and my 23 y/o grandson asked if he could look at my phone. He has a different brand and he had the whole thing completely down in a few minutes. Course I had to come home and charge the battery up. He did show me a couple of things that I remember.

Carol, What is a "decent dick?" Had a good laugh over that one.
So glad that my hubby has the same kind of phone I have. If I learn something new, I tell him and vicey versey.
I cannot do without the our DVR. I don't like to be tied to the TV for the programs I like.
We gave up HBO. We watched very few movies on it. I prefer redbox and then I get the movies we want. Our grocery store and the Walgreens both have redbox and they each are only a mile away and I visit them often anyway. I am not one of those people that plans meals for a week ahead. We do well to plan an hour ahead. About 5 pm, one of us will say to the other, what should we have/do for dinner?
Jan, a decent dick is a like more likable jerk. That's probably qualifies as an oxymoron.
Well, Tiger finished at -2 in the tournament today which is quite a ways down from many of the others. I think they said that he won three times when he started at -2(70). There were a couple of -6s, and several -5s, several -4s and -3s.
There's a 14 year old Chinese kid playing in the Master's. He's the youngest to ever play. He's an amateur. I don't think they can win any money but just fame. He finished today at +1.
For the first time, Idol has 5 female finalists. The Boys are Gone.
Jan, when is the last time a girl won Idol? I gave Idol a chance when my homey was one the show. That was the last time I'll watch it. Every time I did watch it, I didn't think that the best talent won. JMO. Didn't watch it that many seasons. Never cared for most of the judges. Also, since Fox won't make a deal with Dish, it's just too much trouble to watch that Network.
BTW, heard that Joshua, my homey, performed at the White House:
Joshua Ledet Wows Obamas With White House Performance
Also, read on this link that.."At the event, Joshua also performed "Soul Man" with Sam Moore of Sam & Dave (pictured above). That duet will air when the full "Memphis Soul" special runs on PBS this coming Tuesday, April 16."
That special airs here at 7p next Tuesday. I think we have a couple of soul music fans here.
Program description"
"Hosted by President and Mrs. Obama, MEMPHIS SOUL: IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE honors the memorable soul sounds from the mid- to late-1960s that came from Memphis, Tennessee and legendary labels like Stax-Volt Records, that featured artists such as Al Green, Mavis Staples, Carla Thomas, Otis Redding and many more. The evening pays homage to Memphis, a segregated city in the 1960s where many whites and blacks nonetheless came together to make soulful music, a mix of gospel and potent rhythmic grooves - known today as "Memphis Soul."
Coreen, if you want to remember that and watch, add it to the calendar on your iPhone. That is a feature that I use often because my memory just ain't what it used to be.
Well, do you think they will pass a better background check law for purchasing guns? That argument from that terrorist group called the NRA, that it won't work, just doesn't hold water for anyone with a piece of functioning brain. How many of our laws work 100 percent. We have laws against stealing and murder but people still do both. Should we get rid of those laws.
Preacher Warren just lost a son, who obtained his weapon of self-destruction over the Net with no background check. Another message from the Universe..to stop the killing.
I would like to recommend that those Senators/Reps who oppose sensible gun legislation should try what that guy in China did, stick an eel up their ass. They do seem to have something stuck up there.
You wouldn't know that just a couple of days ago it was summer,
the wind is howling, its starting to rain & its about 40...
Carol, not really interested in the white house celeb party & not inclined to use the iphone as you do...
For me, iphone is not intended as a primary phone...can not imagine carrying on a conversation for more than a short time (just long enough to get the message across)...
I am one of those that still use that outdated antiquated what has come to be called the dreaded 'land line'...I still do not know the cell # (other than looking it up)...
other than those who choose not to pay for 2 phones,(yes I am aware that many people can not afford or do not want to carry both costs, so they decide to get rid of the home phone) when did it become so awful to use a 'regular' phone....not a 'smart' one!!...
Another Yankee game rained out,(tonite may be as well) but the season is only a week old &
already a benchclearing brawl results in a Dodger pitcher (a very expensive one) with a broken collarbone...& we call all these guys the 'boys' of summer...
Baseball brawl dodgers & padres, zack greinke breaks collarbone
Try again NY Daily News headline...
Baseball brawl dodgers & padres zack greinke breaks collarbone
Try one more time NY Daily News link
Baseball brawl Dodgers Padres Zack Greinke breaks collarbone
Interesting the link did not take
when there was an 'and' sign in the title...
Coreen I left my land line at my house for over two years before terminating it. For years I called to reduce my horrid billing rate but every time I did, the rate went up. I picked it up to use it one day when at home and it was dead. I probably was paying for a dead line for a long time. That's when I called to cancel if. A year later I noticed I was still paying that same bill. They kinda had it hidden on my statement. I called to complain and they finally reimbursed me for about 6 mos. They are crafty, ATT
There are a lot of older folkes who won't ever give up their land lines. I might not have if that's was the only place I lived. I was just donating money to
AT&T.
I think the older folks who have really adopted the newer technology are those who find it necessary to stay connected where ever they are. It's no longer a necessity for me but it's now an addiction. I love it. I find it extremely useful when I'm away from home. I wouldn't want to give up those benefits.
Some older people are still watching TV over their air antennae. SF refused to have any cable/satellite. I bought a satellite service when I was staying at their house taking care of mom. I got them to get a computer which mom finally used to email, nothing else.
Carol... I feel the same way about Idol... I watched it for 5 seasons... but felt the best talent always went home too early. Several yrs ago it came down to a boy and a girl... both country western singers... while some guy with a very unique jazz type style and a really good musician went down before the top 5... that did for it for me.
Jan... since you seem to be a fan... I do hope you enjoy the show though.
Carol... I hope and pray they do pass a better background check... but I'm not holding my breath.
I was really hoping that they'd at least get rid of high capacity bullet magazines too.... but I'm not holding my breath on that one either.
Of course... I also pray that Wayno LaPierre get penis cancer and his dick falls off.
Coreen.... I watched that brawl on huffpo this morning. Every time I see baseball players "going at it" I usually laugh. I guess I'm used to hockey fights and baseball players look silly with all the pushing and shoving. But Greinke breaking his collar bone ain't a joke.
I hear both teams will meet on Monday again for a 3-game series at Dodger Stadium.... the entire baseball world will probably be watching.
A different baseball story...on the eve of the release of the movie '42', from Jackie Robinson's daughter on growing up in Stamford, CT...
With 42 movie releae Robinson remembered
And the umpires will likely have them on a short leash...
I went into an Idol comment section last night and several people said this season is a set-up - that the judges purposely did not select some of the good male singers so that a female would win this year. I just cannot believe that.
The guy that went home last night was performing terribly for the past few weeks - worse than "pitchy" He could not find the pitch if it bit him on the butt. He had a bad stuttering problem and I think that carried him for a few weeks on the show. I felt very bad for him, but the fact his - he could not sing. I don't know why the judges let him through. One guy was voted off who was an amazing singer but he was not very attractive by today's so-called standards.
Maybe you all are right about the show, but there is little on TV that I like any more. And since I am not into sports.
Carol, glad to hear Joshua sang at the white house. He was one of my all time favorites. The African American contestants do not do as well as white contestants - which does bother me.
The best singer on the show now is an African American woman. She is one of the best singers I have ever heard. Her name is Candice Glover. I hope she wins. She deserves it. So, we will see.
Before I forget...Masters standings...
My sentimental fav is Freddie Couples, started the day at 4 under, but bogied the first so already dropped to 3 under...we'll see how he finishes the day...
And like I said, my loyalties are with the guys who are 'seniors' Tom Watson who starts today at 7 over & gentle Ben Crenshaw at 8 over...
Jan, many who made it right up to the end of the Voice last year were far from attractive, some even goofy looking. It seems that on that show, looks don't count for much. The girl who won was pretty but she also had one of the best voices. One good thing is that the public doesn't get involved until right at the end. That's a good thing. The next stage is the "battle" stage. Each judge pits one of their singers against someone similar. That's tough because some good singers will lose out. The other judges can steal the one who loses.
Coreen, another plus was that I kept up with the Master's leader board on my phone.
Until the Master's come on TV, you can follow the activity here:
Master's on CBS Sports
You can also look at each hole on the course.
I really haven't picked my fav for the Master's yet. I pull for each of them to make their shots.
Jan...
when it comes to things like what tv show to watch or what book to read... I never look at it as "this is right or that is wrong" for anyone else. It's what is right for me. We all have our own tastes... and you're as entitled to yours as I am to mine.
What the hell have I got to brag about.... I mean... I love Hell's Kitchen... :)
I've never seen Hell's Kitchen. I'll have to look for it sometime, but isn't it on Fox? I don't do Fox unless I have to which I do for my Saints.
I had to feel sorry for Tiger today. He started the day -2 and worked that down to -5 to tie with the leaders. On 15, on his approach shot, his ball hit the flagpole and ricocheted into the water. He still managed to finish the hole with a bogey. He ended up the day -3. He also bogeyed the last hole. That was some poop luck.
Coreen, your fav Fred Couples is tied for second.
