School Days

A friend from my early school days wrote me a letter and sent these pictures. Two are elementary group pictures and 3 are from a 9th grade trip to the state fair.

I was unable to upload one of the group pics.

jan said...

Carol, Yes, it is the mothers touch that makes the difference.

Carol said...

Thanks for putting up the pics Jan. For the first three pics..I couldn't really tell which one was you. I just chose the shortest girl..

The last pic..with the close up of the faces..I could pick you out easy.

Carol said...

For the first pic..I'm still stumped. Don't tell me..I want to try to figure it out myself. Give me one hint..which row are you in..I've already eliminated the top row.

jan said...

Carol, In the last 3 pics I am the shortest one or the one in black.

jan said...

I am in the front row

Carol said...

Were you a blond back then?? Second child from the right end? I checked out how far the feet were from the floor.

Carol said...

and the eyes..

jan said...

I am the one in the middle - legs apart (not too modest am I?) and smiling - only one showing teeth with smile.

jan said...

I was one of tallest in class in 1st grade.

Carol said...

Dang Jan..that would have been my last guess. Can't see the eyes but that girl looks big. What happened..did you start smoking in the second grade?

Carol said...

Actually my big sister who is the shortest of us..was the tallest in the 6th grade.

jan said...

So your big sis and I have something in common. I stopped growing in 5th or 6th grade. Don't know what happened. I may not have gotten enough protein when I had my growth spurt.

jan said...

I did not smoke until I was an adult. It made me sick.

Carol said...

I see that Ward Cleaver won the Republican primary in Florida. I tried to avoid all of the political stuff on TV tonight. It wasn't easy. I guess we'll have to deal with this for the remainder of the year? Yuk.

Carol said...

Well Jan...I think I caught your cough..you should have been covering you mouth better.

It woke me up this morning and I'm all congested. We have a lot of it going on at the joint. One of my nurses was out over a week with pneumonia and she's one of those nurses with the old fashioned work ethic.

Actually..it's could be reflux. I ate some stuff before laying down..and I know better. I probably have a lung full of some of those potato chips. Yes..I'm ashamed.

Carol said...

Jan..hope you didn't think I was picking on you for being short. Ya know..I always wanted to be petite. Some people may not buy that but I always thought there were more cute clothes for petite people and shorter people were compatible with more guys. Didn't have to worry if it was only the shorter ones who asked you out.

As for clothes..when I was buying pants..I had to chose them by which ones were the longest on the rack and usually that pair was not a look or color I wanted. I don't know if you remember but when we went shopping..way back..you left with arm fulls of shopping bags and me.. with nada.

Carol said...

Just saw a clip of Michelle Obama from a Leno show. I really do like her. She was talking about how well her husband can sing and that he sings to her all the time.

Leno asked her what she thought about Romney's singing. Maybe you heard him recently..singing America the Beautiful?? Not his best asset but he must not realized it since he went on and on and on. She had a short pause and then said....beautiful. Very diplomatic also.

Carol said...

I really like Obama also..as a personality. When TPTB..the powers that be..select our leaders..they do a pretty good job of taking into account personality.. likability..looks.

Obama was definitely selected and then introduced to us at that Dem convention with that inspiring speech. It was planned way ahead of time. IMO..anyone who hasn't finally come to realize this is naive or not paying attention..or both.

Obama will have a billion dollars this campaign season. That didn't come from just John Q Public with an average of 25 to 50 bucks to contribute.

And I thought that selecting a AA was a nice touch. We were more likely to think that a member of a minority might be more in touch with us regular people. If that didn't work..and people went after him..they could always pull that race card.

I remember when Geraldine Ferraro said that Obama's being black gave him an unfair edge. Do you remember that? They really went after her for that..called her a racist. Even tried to call the Clintons racists.

Carol said...

Last night I was listening to an interview with Roemer on this Internet radio show called..Al..Rock and Kris show. Never heard of them but I couldn't find anything else to entertain me.

One of the guys must have heard Roemer and was impressed. He started the show/interview being impressed and seemed to end it being obsessed.

It was an interesting interview with some young.. kookie..potheads.

Interview with Al Rock and Kris

Carol said...

Roemer is on Morning Joe this morning. If he would have gotten a 10 year head start..he would have definitely caught on.

Carol said...

Just saw on MoJo that 38% of Republican voters still want to see someone else get into the race. But I don't see Roemer..even though he calls himself a Republican..being conservative enough to be that person. He definitively need to get on an Independent ticket.

jan said...

Carol, being short has few advantages. Being old and short has none.

I have to shorten all sleeves and pants. Don't like pants any more. I love long skirts. Hardly wear anything else. people often ask if my long skirts are for religious reasons LOL.

I don't clothes shop much any more - only when my kids give me a gift card. I do like thrift shops. I keep clothes forever if I like them and they still fit - don't care about fashion any longer - fit and comfort are priority.

jan said...

I wish one of you would post something new. I don't like looking at my pics any longer. Tired of them.

Carol, I will probably vote for Obama. I think Romney will get GOP nomination. He probably could do a decent job as pres. but I doubt if he can beat Obama. I think the Amer public are scared of his religious beliefs.

Coreen said...

Jan, not sure how tall you are...I am 5'2", my best friend is 5'....I know about hems...I have 3 jeans
bought in Dec. that I just finally cut, pinned & pressed but still waiting for me to get the sewing machine up to finish them!!!..if I wait any longer, it will be too late to wear them since they are velvet cords...I am going to try to
get them done this weekend...lucky though I never had to shorten sleeves...

Had to smile at your pics...those
roll up jeans you guys were wearing...honestly we didn't wear them...maybe a regional thing...

Coreen said...

Just this a.m. on CNN already reported by WAPO...another most
inartful phrasing by Rommeny when
trying to say he wants to help the middle class, not the rich or the
poor, who have a built in safety net...

Any thoughts about how it will be
played....
Romney latest most awkward phrasing that will likely come back to haunt him

Carol said...

Here's a link to my Buddy on Morning Joe this morning. It's not long.

Roemer on Morning Joe

Carol said...

At least you guys could cut your pants off or take them up..I couldn't add more material and unfortunately the high water look wasn't in at the time. When it did come in.. back several years ago..I was uncomfortable wearing it for a while..just because it brought me back to when I couldn't find pants long enough.

Personally..I've never found the tall.. mega thin look attractive for women or men. Not sure why it's the look chosen for models. Might as well put the outfit on a coat hanger and send it down the runway.

Carol said...

Coreen..I'm sure someone will jump on what Romney said but really..he's right. The very poor..with absolutely nothing.. will be taken care of.. we always have.

The very poor do have many safety nets and are often a tad better off than those trying to work in low paying jobs. If a person owns anything..they are eliminated from getting any help like food stamps or Medicaid.

You're often better off not trying than trying and getting very little reward for the effort. That is the problem. The career poor..have learned how to game the system and it's ripe for gaming. Those recently dropped into that category don't have a clue or a chance.

I've been crying about that for years. Too often there is no incentive to try harder. I've worked around the poor for years.. in my jobs.. and long before I worked in corrections. I've closely studied the situation.

For example..I know someone who worked all their life..was disabled for the last 10 or so years but continued to work because she knew she couldn't live on SS disability. She could only manage to work 3/4s time because of medical issues. Finally..unable to continue..was forced to go for disability. It only pays 12000 a year..poverty level..but because she owns a undivided interest in some property that she can't just sell at a whim..she doesn't qualify for any food stamps or Medicaid. Is that fair??

It is the middle class that has been hit the hardest. The ones who are doing OK managing to keep their heads above water..like me.. are paying for the very poor and the very rich.

Since the rich find a way to avoid paying much in taxes..who do you think are paying the biggest percentage of what we have for those bailouts? The working middle class are. We bailed them out so they could turn around and pay their CEOs those fat salaries and fat bonuses..and they weren't even ashamed. They even caused their own problems but how many were held accountable for that??? Who went to jail??

It's so outrageous what has happened that I was looking around to see who was going to start a revolution.

And who..among others..surrounded himself with sharks for advisers..many of the very sharks that set us up for the kill in the first place?? Good ole Barry. Mr Hope and Change. Are his current political opponents any better? Absolutely not! But a person would be naive to think that he's any better..even if he can sing better.

Carol said...

Some may be satisfied settling for the best of the worst..but I'm not!

Carol said...

And dang it..I hope I never am!

Carol said...

I now have hot water at my house. My electrician changed the wiring yesterday. Whoppee. I'll appreciate that if I even have to evacuate the camp.

I'm so glad I found that bad wiring. It could have burned my house down. Roomy's boyfriend..who tried to fix the HWH the first time..changed the breaker and put in one that was too big. With that bad wiring and an oversized breaker.. it could have caused a fire there. Whew!

Carol said...

I'm not changing the post Jan. I like your young cute post.

Nothing worth photographing here. Too dreary even though the temps have been more like Spring. My red bub tree across the street is in full bloom..way too early. Temps in the 60s and 70s but with chances of rain everyday.

Carol said...

CBS airing show on Super Bowl commercials now.

Coreen said...

Missed the cbs show for the most part...only caught the end when
they announced the winner....naturally the horses win...hands down...the best ads
always...

loved the one when the dalmation & the horse touch paws at the end...

Carol said...

They are already jumping on Mitts "poor people" comment. MSNBC has it covered. If you are a politician..there needs to be an app they can use to vet every word that comes out of their mouths so it can't be taken out of context.

You can make my comments sound heartless also and I do care about the poor and don't mind my tax dollars being used to help them.

I'm the most concerned about how many of the rich are getting richer by kicking more people into the poor category..people who have no experience in trying to survive there.

Coreen said...

I would expect nothing less from msnbc...I do not watch it anymore, not since their disgraceful conduct in 2008...

Coreen said...

Carol, your view about the disconnect between those who work & pay taxes & are not to pleased
to see their dollars go to support the poor while they are left to fend for themselves is echoed everywhere...however, for the most part I do not hear the resentment
of the rich...but rather a
desire to not have to pay more of their hard earned $$$ to
support others...especially when
they are struggling to support their own...that is why I will be
curious to see if the attack the rich campaign proves effective in
the election...

I will say again I do resent the class envy/warfare that obama, the dems & others are pursuing...

jan said...

Coreen, I usually do hems by hand. Don't know why -as I have a couple of machines. I did not remember the turned up cuffs until I saw the pics. I always hemmed my pant legs. I have always done sewing.

I don't know if you all noticed but those little dresses the girls wore were probably home-made. I don't think I had a "store bought" dress until I was in jr. hi. That was rural Okla.

jan said...

Coreen, when I was younger I was 5-2 but now am 5-1 and glad I have not shrunk any more than that.

jan said...

Carol, glad your elect fixed on your house and that you have some hot water. I hate cold showers.

jan said...

We are keeping our little Granddoggie, CeCe. Her parents are going to SF for a wedding. She is the little white fluffy dog. She is a little spoiled. I have to take her for a little walk for her to pee or poop. We just took a short one down the block and back. She must have lifted that leg 15 times. Not much came out, but I think we are good for the night. I can put her outside in the fenced in back yard, but she just stands and looks at me. Won't do a thing. She is looking at me now. I swear when she is sad the sides of her mouth turn own and when she is happy they turn up like she is smiling.

jan said...

Right now she looks sad. She always does the first night she stays with us, then she is fine.

jan said...

SF is San Francisco. They will be gone 5 nights.

Carol said...

Woke up again coughing. When that happens..I have to sit up a while.

I remember little Ce Ce Jan. She is so cute and she does have that cute Maggie like look.

And Maggie does that.. just stand there thing. Drives me nuts..especially when it's really hot or cold. I'm thinking..please sister..walk..sniff..move around..do something..don't just stand there and stare into space..we can meditate in the house.

Carol said...

I voted for the Budweiser horses also. As much as I like E-trade baby..there was only one baby commercial in the segment and it wasn't their best. In commercials..you can't go wrong with cute babies or animals.

Carol said...

Jan..if I had to take a cold shower..that HWH problem would have been fixed long ago. The reason I did drag my feet is because I wasn't sure which way to go with fixing the problem and I didn't need the hot water at the time. I only wash clothes there and I wash in cold water.

Carol said...

Coreen..I happen to be one of the soldiers in that war against those rich who are sucking from the rest of us to get more disgusting rich. It isn't the majority of them..at least I hope not. Many of them feel blessed that they were lucky.

The career poor may have learned to game the system but it is for survival so I can tolerate much of it. I try..when I have to opportunity to point out to some that they could use those skills in better/more appropriate ways.

And I certainly don't resent rich people. I came to realize a good while back that being rich doesn't buy happiness.

But when the rich start gaming to system to get more and more..I resent the hell out of it. I can't remember a time when that has been more obvious than now. And when the highest court in the country pass laws for them to do it..that's the ultimate horror.

Carol said...

Rumor has it that Trump will endorse Newt??? Yuk.

Craig asked in his post yesterday if the Dems should go negative. Negative seems to be effective.. it is so much easier for people to criticize than to create...and it keeps the candidates from having to come up with what they will do to fix our problems.

Carol said...

Happy Groundhog Day. Just read that Phil has a 39% accuracy rate.

Coreen said...

Well Imus summed up the political scene this a.m. & (he's a Romney supporter)...

1. killed bin laden
2. saved GM
3. can sing like Al Green

vs.

1. tied the dog to the roof
2. likes to fire peoople
3. not concerned with poor people

so which guy wins that one!!!

He has a way of cutting to the chase...

Imus disappointed that his guy
keeps saying dumb things...

Coreen said...

Oh & apparently Phil saw his shadow....here there is no way he would see a shadow since it is starting out gray & cloudy...

but yesterday it was 61...

Coreen said...

As far as Donald Trump...if the reports prove correct about endorsing newt...puzzling since
he likes to win...

For the life of me I can not imagine why repubs. think that nominating that nasty sob would play well with the total voting public...

Carol said...

Follow the money...

"Tuesday's fundraising reports marked another banner day for the reelection campaign of Barack Obama. The president's campaign announced that it had combined with the Democratic National Committee to raise $247.7 million in 2011, a biggest haul ever for a president in a non-election year."

I've heard that Obama might hit close to a billion before it's over.

Romney.. his total is $56 million for all of 2011.

Does money buy the best president??Come to your own conclusions...

Carol said...

Coreen..even Rush L got in on the criticism of Romney for his "poor comment". It's not just the liberal media.

Of course..Rush wants to remove some of the safety nets for the poor. His buds need a couple more bucks..for an extra cup of Starbucks.

That is not the issue people..they are all avoiding the real issue..and that is that BOTH parties have created MORE POOR!

Coreen said...

Yes Carol, I heard Rush yesterday
ranting about the fact that Romney
added the safety net...

he was not happy that a so-called conservative would add the safety net fix rather than pointing out
that conservatives believe that
the safety net itself created by dems has actually made & sustained a class of poor people dependent on the govt to survive...

having listened to limbaugh, it does not appear that he is a big romney fan...so far he has refused to endorse any of them...but his entire tone conveys some well contempt for romney....he doesn't come out & say it, but suggests romney's not a 'true
conservative' whatever that may be...

Not sure what the Starbucks has to do with rich though...since most of those at starbucks & Dunkin Donuts are hardly the 'rich'...

trust me when I see
my bankruptcy clients credit card
statements they all have numerous
charges at both those places on a regular basis....

FYI, I think starbucks is so overrated its a joke (a status symbol thing IMO)...but then again i'm not a coffee drinker...
but have to admit I do like donuts from dd!!!....

Coreen said...

Jan, I finally learned how to do a blind stich for hems on the machine...its really easy once you figure it out...

and for jeans machine hemming is
simple (but beware of the seams where its thick...have snapped many needles until I learned to not go over the really thick seams...& do those by hand)

Coreen said...

This just in....Interesting Donald Trump development...from NYT,Drudge & ABC...he will endorse
Romney...

which to me makes more sense from
his perspective...as I said he likes to be a winner...

Leave it to the Donald to drum up
publicity for himself...by the way the Celebrity Apprentice starts in 2 weeks....

Gotta love it!!!....He is a present day pt barnum....

We shall see shortly...

Coreen said...

Hey its going to be an early spring here!!!

Both Staten Island Chuck & Connecticut Chuckles did not see their shadow today....

No way they could since its been
cloudy so far...

Carol said...

Coreen..I love my coffee but I can't stand Starbucks. It tastes to me like someone poured hot water over something they burnt and put it in a cup. Even if I order a mocha latte..it doesn't cover up that nasty coffee. Sorry Starbucks.

I used to go to Seattle every summer and usually drank Starbucks because it was often the only choice. It's everywhere there.. ferry's included. We have a couple of their coffee shops here but I don't visit them.

At home..my favorite coffee is 8 o'clock colombian. It won a taste test a couple of years ago.

Carol said...

Since we have had this new format..we may post more than once but I have not lost one post. If you try to refresh or leave the page before you post your comment..they give you a warning. That's kinda neat. It makes the more difficult to use format worth it.

Carol said...

I think it is so ridiculous for the Media to keep repeating that "poor people comment" from Romney. It's just like what they did to Dr Dean..when he did that yeehaw speech to his supporters. They tried to make Dean look psychotic.

I'm no supporter of Romney but...SHUT UP MEDIA! Anyone with half a brain should realize what he meant and he didn't mean it to sound heartless.

There are plenty of things they can go after Romney for but that ain't one of them.

Carol said...

And to give y'all one example of some of the things that seriously disturb me about how the very poor have a decided advantage over most of the rest of us...definitely not their fault. It's the fault of a broken system.

In the last week I have seen several people who were prescribed a fairly new drug used to treat schizophrenia..bipolar disorder and/or an add on for treating depression.

The drug has a black box warning because it has some serious potential side effects which includes a increased risk of death. The potential side effects are especially significant in the elderly. It also costs between $17 and $25 a pill depending on the dose.

These patients I saw in the last week..with this medication prescribed..prior to their unfortunate incarceration..were covered by Medicaid. It no longer covers them when they come to jail.

I saw one old man today who was on the medication. I asked him if his Doc..a shrink.. had tried any other medication before prescribing this one and he said NO.

I think it is totally irresponsible for a Shrink to prescribe this medication..as a first option.. before exhausting all other and often better choices..especally with the danger involved and the COST to taxpayers.

Our state has recently had some severe cuts to the health budget for the poor. My hospital is drastically cutting services. And these Docs are prescribing one med that cost $750/mo when other options are available.

I've seen three people taking this med just this week and I have a very limited population.

If my Doc prescribed that medications for me I couldn't afford it even with insurance. A patient without any insurance could never afford it but since the state is picking up the tab... these Docs are prescribing it to the poor???

I pretty sure those docs don't get any kick backs for prescribing high dollar meds. I know that many pharm reps do bring lots of goodies..trays of food.. to certain physician's offices almost every day of the week. Can't say if that happens at the office of these shrinks??

I'm not even sure if the docs even know how much the medication costs. I have frequently found that to be the case.

I don't know why Medicaid doesn't require a formulary and require docs to show their reason for why the patient needs these new.. extremely expensive drugs. Could the pharm cos have something to do with that not being required??

I could give you example after example of this kind of lunacy. It's one of the reasons why the healthcare system is broken.

Carol said...

Coreen..I'm certain I saw a rumor on Huff Post that Trump was going to support Newt. I think I even doubled checked it because it surprised me. It might be that my brain is starting to blur the two names together.

Carol said...

They both have weird first names.

Coreen said...

Do you think it may have something to do with the fact that for a period of years the company has a patent on the drugs & during that time they are the exclusive provider of the drug & once it is approved for use by the fed govt
they get to bill whatever they can get...

once these drugs lose their
patent protection & become generic
I believe the profit margin is greatly reduced...

Just today, one of my office neighbors who has ms & just recently was started on the newest
drug from novartis...this woman
is on Disability/medicare & she purchased a supplemental health plan as well,
but based on her low income she
was able to get assistance from Novartis
(after her dr. filled out forms
with her)because w/o the assistance she could not afford
the several thousand $$$/month cost...

but today she mentioned that somehow she was placed on another
assitance program that paid for the meds but when she went to get
the refill this week was told they weren't going to be covered through the program any longer because it had
used up all its money...

Her dr. gave her a short term supply & is going to try to get her back on the orginal novartis
program...but if that should not
happen, she will not be able to
continue on this med...

prior to using this pill, she had
to go to a hospital regularly for
some infusion?...which was paid by medicare, but also at a cost of
several thousand $$$ a visit...

And one of my friend's husband is scheduled to start a chemo pill for
multiple myeloma (a thalydimide med) that again has a cost in the thousands/mo...mostly covered by supplemental insurance but still with a several hundred $$$/mo co-pay...this person also
has parkinson's & the co-pay on the meds for that are also several
hundred $$$/mo.

Coreen said...

Yes Carol, that was the Trump rumor
last night on all the media outlets....but late this am the news changed & I believe Drudge was the 1st to have the jump that it was going to be Mitt Romney...& Trump endorsed Mitt Romney late this pm...

Not a thing wrong with your brain Carol...you have an excellent memory about all things!!!....

Have y'all been following this..if so.. here's something nice to hear. Jamie linked it on TM.

"The Komen Foundation had been giving Planned Parenthood about $700,000 a year. In one 24-hour timespan since Komen announced that they were cutting funding, Planned Parenthood received $400,000 in donations. A Texas couple donated another $250,000. Bloomberg's pledge raises the total to $900,000"

Coreen..glad to know the Alzheimers hasn't set in...yet.

Carol said...

The pharm market is a racket.

When an expensive drug gets close to losing it's patent..pop comes a new one...that's suppose to be better..yeah..sure it is.

Some examples.. prilosec..it goes OTC..then out pops the little purple pill..Nexium. I attended a pharm workshop taught by a pharm PhD who said he didn't think there was any improvement...just lots of big bucks.

Another is Effexor..when it gets close to losing it's patent..out pops Prestiq. They do probably have a molecule of difference..usually different color.

And I'm disgusted with how many Medicaid patients who come to jail are on all the new..expensive ones.

Personally for my patients and for myself..I prefer drugs that are older..less expensive but still very efficacious. It takes a few years just to realize how many people the new drug will kill.

Pharm cos don't seem to worry about if they kill people. With the amount of money they make on these new drugs..they can afford to kill people. No problemo.

My Buddy will be on the War Room with Jennifer Granholm shortly. On Current TV..8pm C. I'm going to tape it and if he leaves a link..I'll list it here.

Carol said...

He was also on something..talking with Dylan Ratigan today but I haven't listened to that yet. If I find it and there's a link..I will list that also. I'm working on his campaign..even though he doesn't know it..yet.

Carol said...

I made a mistake about Roemer being on the War Room tonight. It's Friday night. Still have time to set your DVR.

jan said...

I have read the story of Romney putting the dog on the roof of the car on a family trip. Its a terrible story. I think most animal lovers will read that and will not vote for him for that alone.

jan said...

I am a tea drinker. Interesting thing about Starbucks. John is a big coffee drinker, but when traveling he refuses to get coffee at SB's - likes mcdonalds. He says the coffee is just as good.

Carol said...

Some interesting statistics shown on the Young Turks tonight.

"Capital gains and dividend income only makes up 1.4% of the total income of households earning less than $100000."

and

"54% of this income(capital gains and dividend income)goes to households with income > $1 million"

That's why it is taxed at such a low rate as compared to the income we workers bees have to slave to earn.

I'm cool with keeping tax on capital gains low..but lets lower the tax on worker bee income also and get those greedy corps to pay their damn fair share of taxes.

Carol said...

Or lets say..we split the difference.

Sad story. Just heard from a 1st cousin in Calif. Have not seen since we were children. Her 2 sisters died this past year. I talked with her 6 years ago (on the phone) after my dad died. We talked about getting together but never did. They live in San Bernadino - just don't get that far. So sad. They have always lived in CA. We lived in OK. We traveled out there to visit once/yr. So not like we grew up together, but while my parents were alive, we stayed in touch.

jan said...

Did it again. If you can Carol, delete one.

Coreen said...

Carol you asked those at TM about Imus political leanings...

here's his history..I have been listening to Imus long before
his tv simulcasts, I go back to the 70s when the radio station was wnbc, now wfan sports talk...long before TM existed...I believe that those at TM only know Imus since Craig started appearing on his show, whenever that was...

1992 - big supporter of Bill Clinton had a falling out after he was asked & mc'd some DC dinner
where he made remarks that
were poorly received by Bill &
Hill...Clinton appeared on his
radio show & was a big hit when the convention was in NYC...

1996 - supported Bob Dole... he called the show often

2000 - pretty sure it was George Bush, but don't remember, pretty sure he was not a fan of Al Gore...& don't remember if either of them ever appeared on the show..

2004 - supporter of John Kerry who
was on the show many times, as was
John McCain...

2008 - supporter of John McCain

Honestly don't remember if he ever
said he is registered in either party...

Carol said...

Sorry about cousins Jan.

I took care of the second post. Have you lost any of your comments since we got stuck with this new format? I haven't. We can take care of the extra posts but we can't get them back from the ozone when they take off there.

Carol said...

Thanks for the info on Imus Coreen. I used to occasionally watch Imus back when he was on MSNBC. He was a little too obnoxious for my taste.

I really didn't know what his political affiliation was. I know he has that kids with cancer camp. I think of those kind of activities as being more liberal so I thought that maybe he was.

Carol said...

Daily Show and Colbert were good tonight but they have some good material to work with now.

What will Colbert do with the 1 million dollars he has in his Super Pac?? He disclosed the amount tonight. I hope he finds a way to use it to shove that entire concept up the asses of all our current primary candidates.. who use Super Pac money.

Tonight..to the accompaniment of Romney singing America the Beautiful.. Colbert disclosed the 22 biggest donors to the candidates Super Pacs..those who are buying our next president. Can you believe it has come to that? And all with the help of the Supremes. They should be ashamed.

We watched Imus when living in Ark. He was entertaining although sometimes came off like a jerk. John was more fond of his show than me. He has a ranch in NM.

The little dog's eyes were matted tonight. Just took a damp warm washcloth and cleaned them. Now her face is dirty. Will clean in the am.

Carol, do Maggie's eyes get matted?

jan said...

Wow! the deaths of my cousins makes me realize my own mortality. Never know when death will happen. These cousins are my mother's sisters girls. The oldest was a year older than me- she died in August, '11 she had Parkinsons (I am told) and the middle one died last May of Cancer - diagnosed 3 years ago. She was a year younger than me. The youngest is the one who called me. She was my brother's age- now 64. She has had cancer too. She was just diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Unusual as they are usually diagnosed younger. I wrote them all at Christmas. We had lots of fun together when we visited them in Calif years ago. We were close enough in age that we got along well. They lived in Yermo Calif, just on the edge of the Mojave desert.

The little dog is sacked out on the couch up next to the "arm" of the couch. This is where she sleeps. She sleeps with my son and his wife at home. We don't let her sleep with us or even in our room. John has started having a little wheezing since she got here last night so best she sleep in separate room. She is asleep and looks pretty comfortable.

I think that maybe a perfect third party ticket option would be..

BUDDY ROEMER/CHUCK HAGEL

Don't roll your eyes until you have had time to ponder it.

When I first became obsessed with the news..back in 2000..when Gore was running for president..he was the only Republican that would make me stop to listen when he came on to speak. He always made sense. I pretty much liked everything he said and he never just followed a party line. I was so sorry when he left politics.

Carol said...

No Jan..Maggies eyes don't get matted.

Is little Ce Ce feeling more settled in?

jan said...

CeCe is more settled in now. She did not eat at all yesterday morning but this morning she "woofed" it all down (pun intended). I did feed her a little bit last night since she did not eat in am. At home she is fed in am. I think she is settled in now. We just got back from a walk.

Jan...I feed Maggie her home cooked food twice a day and then she gets these Science Diet large chunks from a dental diet food several times a day. I call them her cookies. She loves her cookies.

I don't think I could only eat once a day so why should I think Maggie could. I guess if dogs are conditioned to do it..it's not so bad.

With all the rain we've had..I'm watching the river rise. I hope that the fact that I got my HWH fixed at the house and my yard cleaned up last weekend wasn't inspired by an unconscious intuition that I would soon need both done..

I have been trying to find someone to rake up all the leaves outside and straighten up my stuff under the camp. A friend offered her college student stepson but he never called to do the job. I was planning on paying him well for the work and it wasn't hard work.

Last weekend my neighbor told me he knew this guy who wanted some work. He's in his 30s and illiterate...seriously illiterate.
He told me he'd do the job for 10 bucks an hour. Sounded reasonable since I was going to pay the kid more.

He did a pretty good job but with all the breaks he took and the things he broke..I did end up paying him 15 bucks an hour but it was worth it.

jan said...

Woke up too early this morn. I talked wit my sis yesterday. She is feeling pretty down. I suppose that is normal for this time in her life. Her husband died 6 months ago. After his death she jumped in and began organizing her life and finances. Now that is done and despite their conflict with each other, she is missing having him there. There are also issues among her 4 children. They are "warring" with each other over their biological father's will. the 2 younger ones have sued the 2 older ones. I Won't go into all of it but it is really hard on her.

jan said...

Carol, glad you found someone to rake and clean up your place. We have an older gentleman who checks in with us a couple of times a year to clean up the outside area here. It costs to get stuff done like that. I don't think young people (teens) like to do that any longer. Our older gentleman is in his 60's and he needs the work and he does a good job.

I posted this on TM"

Bill Moyers seems to always give us lots to ponder.

Jonathan Haidt Explains Our Contentious Culture

“Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explains how liberals and conservatives see the world differently.”

If Chloe is still out there lurking..she’d probably find this one interesting!

One thing this Haidt guy says is that conservatives feel like there should be consequences that fall on bad behavior..I agree. The only problem is that they think that those consequences should only fall on the poor..they step on or over the line and they get smacked down hard. When the rich are responsible for that bad behavior..they get a raise and a bonus.

Another thing this guy said that I found particularly amusing is…

“that reasoning and Google can take you anywhere you want to go”

he’s talking about the confirmation bias..if you have an idea or opinion..no matter how nutty it might be..just type it into Google and they will pop up with the support you need to confirm it. Don’t ya just love that.

Some of my ideas..I can confirm..on C2C..huh Coreen?

I've only gotten about 2/3 thru the video. Will finish it later.

Carol said...

I started my clothes routine..and did my Wally World shopping. I'm half way thru the clothes routine.

The rain has slowed down to a hard drizzle. I've had more than 7 inches over the last week. More than enough.

When I was waiting in the check out line..I pulled up NOAA's advanced hydrologic prediction service for my river. It's at flood stage now..about 4 ft but predicted to go up to 5 ft by Tuesday. Not sure they are counting this rain than continues. Hope so. A nice north wind would be appreciated. It usually blows out some of that water.

I don't want to have to leave the camp even if I do have hot water at the house. I have nothing else I need there and would have to get a U-haul to carry what I need to stay there again. Not doing that! No satellite either.

The water shouldn't get high enough to threaten the camp..just the road which would make getting to and from the camp a problem.

I did get extra candy at the store and I think I have enough other stuff socked away to support life for over a week. If I can't get to work..they can set up Skype and I'll do telemedicine.

If the road becomes impassable..I'll just park my truck at the start of the road and kayak in. When the water is high..the current is strong and I wouldn't even have to paddle..just grab onto my wharf when I get close. If I miss...I'll report on how things are doing in the Gulf..after that oil spill.

My Buddy has gotten some air time this week. He was on Morning Joe..The War Room with Jennifer Granholm..a radio show with A J Stream..particularly good. Dylan Ratigan was also on the show:

"Washington Isn't Broken. It's Bought." - Gov. Buddy Roemer on The Stream

and briefly on CNN this afternoon..first time I've seen him on CNN. Don Lemon..who is also from Baton Rouge..had him on. He said his mom wanted him to. Don got nervous when Buddy asked why he couldn't be in the next CNN debate since he's the first to get matching funds.

Don started stuttering and said that was above his pay grade. Hope Don doesn't get in trouble for having Buddy on.

Those Networks don't want Buddy's message out there either. They all make lots of money from those Super Pac slush funds that Buddy refuses to have.

Most of the political polls don't even list him and they won't let a person give that choice when they call.

It's so obvious that Roemer has been closed out. You have to wonder why????

Carol said...

Roemer has already made a very significant point...that is..you can't even compete in the game unless you have the backing of that corrupt big money..some..from God only knows who.

Most people don't know he's in the game..they have a good excuse..what's worse is...some do and they are willing to tolerate it.

Carol said...

Rut rho...NOAA just moved their water level rise prediction for my river to 6 ft. I hope they are over-estimating. Need a strong north wind. It is out of the north but not strong enough. At least it stopped raining.

jan said...

Thanks for letting us know your weather situation Carol. Are you worried about this? If so, are there any preparations you can make.

Carol said...

Jan..it's a gamble. I'm going to gamble because moving to the house will be just too much work and I can make it if it doesn't go over 6 ft..I think. Not sure if I can drive thru that but the camp will be OK.

I have either a cold or bad allergies. I've hit it with everything in my arsenal..steroid nasal spray..antihistamines..saline wash..vitamin C...snacks and nada. I bet it is the mold spores. It's been raining and damp. I'm sure my immune system is kinda tuckered also.

jan said...

Congratulations Coreen on the Giants win. I am not into football but John likes Eli so he and most of people we know were for the Giants (based on the postings I see on FB). We got back from the movie at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. The last 5 minutes was pretty exciting.

jan said...

Coreen, did you like Descendent. It had an interesting plot.

Carol said...

I woke up early but I think I did get some quality sleep before I did. Too early to tell if I feel better yet. I'm still very congested.

Jan..have you ever tried using those saline nasal douches? If you do it right and don't drown yourself..it really feels good..for a few minutes after.

There was something on the news that someone used contaminated water and died but only heard of one so far. That's nothing compared to how many people most meds kill.

Carol said...

It's interesting that Craig used someone who posted a long love Newt speech for a New Thread on TM. I'm not sure if he was..a) trying to stir up discussion..b)did it to keep the guy from posting it on every new thread he put up. He did post it on two..or c) he's getting a fee for the promotion.

I've often wondered if people are paid a salary to go to different social media sites to talk up a candidate. If not..then they need to start setting something like that up.

A campaign will spend millions on advertising that most people ignore so why not give some people salaries to go around and spread the word about their candidate. Hey..$50000 for someone to do that could get more attention and support a family at the same time.

Carol said...

Carol, John has a nettie pot. I don't really want to do it. I heard that 2 people have died from using them - both in Louisiana. Something about organisms in the water. You are supposed to use special water with them. I have gotten to 70 -almost 71 - so I guess I will be ok without one.

I don't always watch Harry's Law any longer but the one this past week was pretty good. It was about a woman who was losing her home because she was behind on payments, and so she robbed the bank that would not give her a loan and about a HS kid who died after playing foot ball - a second concussion. It was most interesting.

jan said...

CeCe's parents pick her up late this afternoon. I will miss her. She finally started going going out back to the bathroom. She has really settled in with us.

One of CeCe's favorite spots in laying on the back of the couch (it is pretty wide) with her head hanging over the front. This is a spot where she can see out of the front window too. This is where she is now! Her other spot is next to me on the couch and she lays against my right leg. The couch is old and soft and I also have a thick down comforter on it. She does not lay next to John's leg. He sits on the other side of the couch. His leg is not as soft and cushy as mine. ha ha

Have only seen harry's law a couple of times...these current events topics always leave you wondering what is the correct result & as in life, there rarely is a 'right' answer...how did the tv show end it...

The storyline reminds me of Michael
Connelly's 'The Fifth Witness' book..a woman is charged with killing the bank vp whose bank
was foreclosing on her house & Mickey Haller the lawyer takes her case...

Its a prety good read...Connelly wrote lincoln lawyer, its the same
character in this book...

Have not seen masterpiece theater
not even sure its on any of my cable channels...

the chevy truck ad after the acopolypse made me smile because the guy was with his dog!!!not his girl!!!....

did not find the dorito's ad with the great dane burying the cat's collar even remotely funny...cat owners unite & no dorito's (wouldn't eat them anyway)....

thought the kid peeing in the pool
was not funny either...justifying behavior that is well gross at best...

Clint Eastwood giving the half time
speech...at first I thought it was
a political ad..but it was for
Chrysler...

jan said...

Coreen,
Harry's Law - the woman who robbed the bank of $60,000. with a gun. She was convicted and going to prison for 10 years. The defense was that this was the government's fault for bailing out the banks and other institutions and not putting some kind of conditions or limitations on the $ given them that might go to help out people who were duped in the mortgages they took out with the banks. There was a lot said about that in the defense and by the prosecution.

The second issue was the HS football player who died shortly after a game. His parents wanted to sue the school. The judge ruled that they could sue. There was some expert medical testimony about how much damage football does to the players in terms of head injuries specifically. They also talked about the cognitive effects even if the kids do not get concussions. Something that I did not know was that when a person has had one concussion at some point in their life and then get a 2nd concussion, there is a good chance of sudden death. I do not understand the physiology of this. Maybe Carol does.

It was interesting that this particular topic was presented just before the Superbowl.

jan said...

I will look up the book "the fifth witness" and Lincoln Lawyer. Both sound interesting

jan said...

We get Masterpiece theatre on our "public" channel. A great thing about it is there are no commercials. I can hardly wait for Sun. nights. I have read that this is a very successful program.

jan said...

Sorry you have a cold Coreen. Most of the people I know, here and on-line, have had one in the past month or so.

Do you use one of those nasal cleaning things. Sounds like torture (water boarding) to me. I do have some saline nasal spray that helps here as it is so dry.

jan said...

the last comment about nasal cleaning was mainly for Carol.

Carol said...

No Jan..it's not torture. I'm a weenie. squeeze my little finger and I'll sing like a canary..tell you anything you want to know. I have a low tolerance for discomfort.

You have to learn the knack for using that nasal wash..go slow. It really feels good after..for a little while.

I was miserable at work today..sneezing..blowing my nose..coughing. I don't get this kind of stuff often..in fact it's very rare.

Carol said...

Still watching the river. I think I'm good until tomorrow night and then it gets iffy. I told work that I might be on my camp island then.

Carol said...

Coreen..I've seen that newameria21 ad on the cable news channels many times. I've just been afraid to look at the site. You know how I have a tendency to panic. It's suppose to be a warning about what is soon to come financially and what we can do to protect ourselves. Why don't you go check it out and tell me about it. Please.

Coreen said...

No big deal Carol, you can look at it...

Its nothing but a come on to buy some guy's investment reports...his name is porter stansberry(read about him at wiki)...he goes through a long, long list of examples of how the entire financial system is going to collapse & surpise surprise...wants you to pay him
$99/yr to tell you how to protect your assets when the u.s. economy collapses...there are tons of these
charlatans out there...all trying to grab some $$$$

When are you going to start believing me when I tell you that everything revolves around $$$$, that will not change...

and hey you are the 'tough' one here...you work in an environment that I could never deal with & you
are afraid to look at it!!!....

its just more gloom & doom...are you still listening to c2c, maybe
we need to cut you off from the conspiracy thing!!!...

Seriously though please be careful
with the water surge...can not have
you and magster floating away at this point...we rely on you to be here...

Carol said...

Thanks Coreen..it's a money thing. You know I've been burnt so most things that have to do with money..scare me the hell out of me.

I'm still watching the river. The problem in that it takes days for all that rain water to get here and for the river to crest. It's still OK for now but tomorrow it starts to get into a questionable area then Wednesday it gets to a level that I'm not sure I can drive thru.

It will be no threat to my camp. The road out in front of my camp will be high and dry also since the front yard is higher than the back.

The problem is that the river runs right along parts of the road and in the places that are low it's difficult to see where the road edge ends and the river starts. It will just all look like river and that's intimidating...to me.

I told them at work today that tomorrow might be my last day for the week if the road goes under because I prefer to be locked in than locked out.

Here's the NOAA hydrological info for my area of the river:

http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=lch&gage=otbl1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1&toggles=10,7,8,2,9,15,6&type=0

Carol said...

I still have a C2C subscription..it's not expensive..but I don't listen very often..it just takes too much time.

Carol said...

I never kept any records of the river level when the road actually became impassable or at what level it came up in the area where I park and keep stuff under the camp. This time I will do that so I know when I have to do what.

I do know that at a little over 10 ft.. it's just short of getting in the lower parts of my camp. Had it there for both Rita and Ike. Don't have to worry about that this time.

They just changed the river prediction to have it at 5 ft by 6 am in the morning and 5.5 by tomorrow evening so I may be changing my plans of going to work tomorrow. I guess I'll be doing telephone medicine.

jan said...

Can you do skype Carol. I have skype and managed to use it Sat. My 19 y/o GD in Ark needed to write a paper from an interview with someone 70 or older so she asked me. It was an hour long interview on skype. Mostly it was about historical events and my reaction at the time to these events.

Coreen, I think you said you have watched Big Bang Theory. I taped Ellen show today as Jim Parsons was on. He is Sheldon on Big Bang. I have watched pretty much all the reruns now. It is now my fav show on TV.

jan said...

Carol, Did you stay in your camp for Rita and Ike?

jan said...

Our little dog went home. They picked her up about 7 pm. We miss her. She is a lot of company and so laid back. A funny thing this morning. John had walked over to the pool and when he came he she put up a huge fuss - barking and running around. He had on big sunglasses and a ball cap and coat. She did not recognize him. He was offended - I told him he scared her - after he removed his glasses and cap she was fine, but she was shaking all over. Poor baby!

jan said...

Are you two feeling any better? I finished my antibiotics tonight - and I am feeling much better. It took a long time for the cough to stop though.

Carol said...

Jan..Rita and Ike were hurricanes..I didn't even want to be in town much less out here at the camp. I only knew where the water came because I saw the water line on stuff around here.

Carol said...

The water is up this morning but still hasn't topped my lowest wharf and still isn't up under the camp yet. I don't have a clue what that means for the road since the places where the road first goes under are a little way off from here.

My neighbor leaves for work early so I'll call him for a report in a little while. He used to work for himself so I could count on him to be out here to take care of stuff. Now he has a regular job.

Carol said...

What I don't understand Jan is why do dogs get confused when we change our appearance.. when they have that super powerful nose that ought to tell them who we are.

I have experienced the same thing. SF's had a dog that was a really mean dog. He was a biter and left his teeth marks in a good many people including my big sis's husband who is a really nice guy and didn't need biting.

SF loved that dog more than most of his other dogs. I think that is because SF would have liked to have left his teeth marks in people also. He also had a inner mean streak. The dog never bit me but I didn't trust him.

I told you this story but you may have forgotten. I was out standing by mom's garden one day wearing this bulky pink coat and talking to SF's helper. Buster..the biter..saw me from a distance and started running my way at full throttle. I wasn't sure at first what was on his mind.

As Buster got close enough for me to see his face..I could see he had this Cujo expression on his mug. Cujo was that devil dog in one of Stephen King books.

I froze with fear..my life flashed thru my head. Just before impact..Buster recognized me. That Cujo expression turned into this silly smile. He had to even laugh at himself. It took me a little while to see the humor in it.

jan said...

Carol, that is a funny story about buster, the dog. I don't remember you telling that. I love it. Surprised me too when CeCe was barking so fiercely at John. As soon as he removed the glasses and cap =it was all good again.

jan said...

I will never forget the time you jumped upon the hood of the car with your typewriter in your arms when a dog came at us. You did that in one leap. funny what fear will do.

jan said...

Carol, your Buddy R. sounds like a good guy.

Carol said...

Jan..Buddy is the best man running and you know how picky I am.

Interesting PPP poll results:

The Obama administration’s controversial decision to require religiously affiliated institutions like universities and medical centers to provide workers with health insurance that covers prescription birth control without a co-pay appears to have support from a majority of voters, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling.

“..56 percent of all those polled supported the administration’s decision while 37 percent opposed it”

“Even a majority of Catholics appeared to support the Obama administration decision though by a narrower margin, 53 percent to 45 percent.”

And because of Romney’s position on the subject…”Forty six percent of Catholics said they would be less likely to support Romney versus 28 percent who said they would be more likely and 23 percent said it would make no difference.”

And wasn’t Obama ready to back off on his position?? What a weenie.

I didn't go to work today because I didn't want to leave and be unable to return. I think I may have been able to get back in even though I would have had to drive thru water over the road. It was already there this morning.

This evening the water is rising fairly fast. It's now over all my wharves and up in the lowest area under the camp.

NOAA says they take measurements more frequently during periods of high water but they are only measuring once a day at 8 AM. They were measuring more often before the rise. That leaves me to try to figure the level out myself.

jan said...

Geesh Carol, now I am worried about you. Can you take pictures?

I'm practicing telemedicine with Iphony.

I told the nurses to bring the patients in and I'd do sick call on the speaker phone but someone would have to be the scribe. None of them wanted to work that hard so they just called me one by one as they needed something.

Carol said...

Jan..you know I'd be the first to worry if there was something to worry about.

The water didn't get up significantly until after dark and I did try to take pics but they didn't come out. I'll get some tomorrow.

For now..I'm just on vacation...trapped like a nutra rat on my own island. Good thing it's winter cuz if it were summer..those gators could swim right up to the yard.

Carol said...

Come to think of it..it has been pretty warm..my lemon tree is blooming. Hmmmm.

Carol said...

Well..I'm up and it seems that the river may have hit the crest level or close to it. I told ya that I was never able to keep records of what level did what in the lower flood stages. That often happens before ya know what hit ya. And this is the first real flood since I've lived out here.

I do know when to all out panic.. at really high levels but I was never out to monitor when it was coming up at the lower flood levels.

If this is that 6 ft crest..2 feet over flood stage..it just might be that that is right at the level when it's still OK..except for the road getting here. The prediction graph indicates 5.8. Will have to wait for 8 A to see what NOAA has to say. Once I know I may make my own measuring stick to put out here.
