Everyone loves a parade

About this time every year for as long as I can remember, the Barnum Festival takes place in Bridgeport to commemorate P.T. Barnum, born on July 5, who while not a Bridgeport native, adopted the city...there are many events planned, culminating in both fireworks & a parade...the 63th annual parade happened today...it was a little drizzly & damp, but there were floats, drum corps, balloons, dancers, clowns, the obligatory public officials, & all in all...a nice day for those who did line the streets along the parade route...

Great Coreen, you got to go to a parade. Nice pics. Are you going to watch the fireworks too?

Anonymous said...

Let's see if I can add some context to the pics..

1.the statue of P.T. Barnum sits at Seaside
Park...which is a public park/beach at Long Island Sound...

2.Bridgeport's finest horse patrol...they are impressive when you get close to them...

3.the balloons being lined up at the start of the parade...led by some Bpt. motorcycle cops...there is a balloon of PT Barnum to the
center of the pic

4. the Uptown Swing Band from PA

5 & 6 Tiger & Panda balloons

7. CT Hurricanes drum & bugle corps

8. the ringmasters float sponsored by People's
United Bank...the picture on the float is of
People's Bank main headquarters downtown, & right next to it is the Barnum Museum...

9. grand marshall's float

10. the Portugese Club's float of a band & dancers who did dance along the parade route...

I just posted this on the last blog post:

I'd rather not see Casey get a 1st degree murder conviction.

I'm pretty dang sure that both Cindy and
George knew Caylee was dead and Casey was involved from the moment she returned and was stalling bringing them to little Cayless. Later, Cindy went into denial but I don't think George ever did or didn't for long. And you can never convince me that he had a thing to do with Caylee's death. Nada.

I've never been really convinced by the chloroform evidence even though Cindy lied about her doing the search. There were some good possibilities that Casey may have been looking up chloroform because a boyfriend had that My Space posting about chloroform. But it could also be true that that's where she got the idea originally of using chloroform to knock Caylee out. It's an old drug and you would have to be older to even know about it. But then why did she need to search how to make it??

But if we eliminate chloroform as being used in this case then it's worse to imagine the use of that duct tape. I feel pretty convinced that the duct tape was over Caylee's face..beyond a reasonable doubt convinced and I'd almost rather hope that chloroform was used first. I think even the State made that point.

I'm still listening to the defense presentation. I recorded it since I've been interrupted many times today and didn't want to miss a word.

The State did a wonderful job explaining Casey's motives and the situation Casey found herself in re her desires for her freedom and her being burdened by a child who was getting old enough to bust her for her lies. That rang very true. That child could sing all the words of a little song. Wouldn't be long before she could do more talking.

The State didn't spend much time today on their first presentation today. Baez is making some wild accusations that the State will be able to counter tomorrow. That's why they left so much of their time for rebuttal. They knew he would.

Had to leave the house because I had another crisis with SF. He's more devious than Casey but I hope no one ends up dead in his case.

Carol said...

Interesting that Baez has turned it into it's all grandma and grandpa's fault.

Casey had multiple opportunities to fess up to the drowning as the cause of death and never did it. That scenario was handed to her on a silver platter multiple times. Why?

Carol said...

Coreen, was the parade on a small road? Is it a small town?

Anonymous said...

As to the trial...did not hear any of the closing arguments other than the bits on the talk shows now...

For me, I still can't get beyond the month that the child was missing...& because of that I believe casey did knowingly kill her, there is no other reasonable explanation of where that child was all that time...

I do not believe the father covered up anything, don't buy into the drowning theory, absoultely no evidence of same...

the existence of the duct tape with the remains
suggests a certain degree of intentional actions on the part of casey...just applying it to the child would at the minimum suggest an intent to silence her, & I do think casey
wanted out from under the obligation of a child...

all the evidence presented (not the opinions offered by all the talking heads based upon information not in evidence) the car with the
stains, the odor, the computer searches, the
duct tape, the heart outline, the way the remains were packaged, the place where they were left, the total lack of concern by casey
for the whereabouts of the child, the lies (before Cindy finally reported it to authorities) partying, hanging with the boyfriend, the tatoo, shows
a self-absorbed, callous woman who did not want to be burdened with a child...

there is just no other reasonable explanation...

The parade was in Bridgeport which is the largest city in the state, about 100,000 population...the parade route
now is much shorter than when I was growing up...

then it came from Seaside Park & went up
Main Street through the downtown(about 5+ miles then)...however, over the years, it has been shortened a lot, & it no longer comes through what is now the rougher part of the city...

w/o checking it, today's parade route was between 1-2 miles...along city streets, with houses all along the way...ending at one of the high school fields...

and years ago, it seemed there were lots more
people along the route...I would say the expense to get it together, the changes in the
makeup of the city have all contributed to a
much more down-sized event...

years ago the floats were sponsored by companies...with the employees making/decorating/driving/standing on them...& since there is little mfr in the city now there aren't many corporate sponsors left...

Anonymous said...

Not going to the fireworks Carol...haven't gone in years...the traffic was always awful,
crowded, difficult parking, & now not in a good
neighborhood at all to park & walk, & you would
have to wait several hours to get near the beach/park...time changes all things...

right now I can hear the fireworks just starting to boom...& I'm about 12 miles north of where they are...

Carol said...

Your pics have a small town look about them.

Just found this video on AOL. This bird is really asking for it.

Coreen, great post. Wonderful pics. The AR town we lived in before moving here had parades and it was such fun.

They have closed down many places that sell fireworks here due to more fire dangers. I am sure the city of Alb will have their annual fireworks display.

John and I usually watch the Boston Pops or another July 4th celebration on TV.

Jan, did you hear one of the State prosecutors, Linda Drane-Burdick's, final closing argument this morning? It was well done. You mentioned you heard both sides yesterday but the prosecution hadn't finished their presentation yesterday.

Now it's up to the jury. I don't envy them that responsibility. I really can't see how they can acquit her on all charges.

Do they really sell drive through alcoholic drinks in parts of LA, Carol...must make for a brisk DWI business...
Drive through daiquiris

Anonymous said...

Almost forgot the trial...tuned in Jane Velez?
show just now...& they said the state's final closing arguments by the woman prosecutor was very effective...what do you think Carol...

Again that 31 day period with the child missing seals it for me...only Casey knew where
the child was all that time....& she partied
like she knew she was free at last...

My instinct says that the jury does convict her
of at least the aggravated manslaughter...but
would not be surprised if they did convict her
of the 1st degree murder & with it the death penalty...

I would be really surprised if they were to acquit her...for me, that would be a complete
travesty of the entire justice system...similar to the disgraceful actions of the OJ Simpson jury...

Carol said...

Yes, and yes Coreen.

Carol said...

Told ya what our philosophy is here.

Carol said...

We do have a brisk DWI business.

I've seen those drive thru liquor places. Looks like a snow cone place. I haven't actually seen one recently but I'm sure they're still around. They have all sorts of mixed frozen drinks and they put a piece of tape over the drink top. Yeah, like that makes a difference.

I have peeps in for their 5th, 6th, 7th, etc DWI and some of them have been busted down from even more previous charges.

Heard the other day they arrested this 20 year old guy for DWI, he bonded out and later that day they caught him on a MC going 80 and drunk. I heard he didn't get out that time.

Carol said...

Coreen, I tried to maintain a certain amount of denial because I just couldn't cope with the idea of any mother doing what Casey did and I oughta know what women are capable of. I've got quite a few just like her in our joint and they are nice looking women. None as bad as Casey though.

My denial has been fading throughout this trial and it went out all together after the closing. I tried to forget some of the evidence but the prosecution just sewed up all the evidence and did it very well.

And as far as her parents having anything to do with this....the only fault they have is that they didn't do something about her behavior a good while back. They will have to live with that. Casey didn't only kill her daughter she destroyed her entire family.

I told you the other night that Cindy's mom, Caylee's great grandma, wanted to have Casey arrested a day or two before Caylee died and Cindy threatened to disown her if she did. Her mom now lives with that quilt.

Maybe with all the publicity this case has gotten, parents will think about doing something about their troubled kids before something serious happens.

Coreen, did you hear any of the prosecution closing? Both of the prosecutors were good but Ms. Drane Burdick's finale was kicked ass.

Carol said...

that was suppose to read kick ass. You could go to wftv.com, channel 9, and pull up the big finale. You could also hear it on HLN but too much commentary and too many commercials.

Carol said...

Because of where I work, I've been thinking about how Casey is going to feel now that she will not be surrounded by people with her being the center of attention. It's probably going to be some serious reality shock.

Anonymous said...

No Carol, did not hear the closings...just the bits on the tv shows...which give no real continuity...

As far as the family...it seems they were in
denial about the disappearance of Caylee & the true nature of Casey...I do not for a minute believe that they in all sincerity they thought a stranger kidnapped her...they all knew Casey was a 'bad seed' so to speak....they had plenty of warnings & for whatever their reasons...they chose to act out
this soap opera of events....

And yes Carol, I would think you have a pretty
good instinct about human nature dealing with the inmates in your facility....

I think I missed that about Cindy's mom...she
wanted Casey arrested for what reason...

As far as Cindy...she & the others will have to live with the choices they made...

And I would bet dollars to donuts that Cindy & George get divorced within a year of the final
outcome....

I like what the atty. Mark Najame just said jury convicts of either murder 1 or aggravated manslaughter...no question about it...

Carol said...

I would like Jan, if she could handle it, to hear today's closing, especially the last 5-10 minutes. Great finale.

Jose was jumping up objecting right and left today and only once was the objection sustained by the judge.

Carol said...

"And I would bet dollars to donuts that Cindy & George get divorced within a year of the final
outcome...."

Coreen I pondered the exact same thing today. Only thing that might hold them together for a little while is for the guest appearances on TV shows. Even in court I could see they were sitting farther and farther apart. I don't know if any marriage could withstand what they went thru.

And for Cindy's mother....she found that Casey had stolen some money from her husband's nursing home account and told Cindy that she wanted her arrested so that Casey could learn a lesson. Cindy told her mom she would never forgive her.

That was the same day that Cindy brought Caylee to see her dad at the assisted living facility. I think that might have been the day before little Caylee died.

Anonymous said...

Jan when you are here...can you say why you think the state has not proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt...

Is there something the defense presented that
leads you to believe that casey did not kill her child....

Coreen, people look at Casey and think she can't be that terrible but let me tell you that's what the new female criminal looks like these days.

I was walking the other morning from where I park to the buildings where one of my clinics is located. I was following a large group of male and a smaller group of female inmates heading to 72 hour court. A majority of the men were AA/non white but a majority of the women were nice looking white women.

Jan was the only person I knew who thought she was innocent. Maybe there were a couple of hold outs on the jury that weren't going to change their minds and the rest wanted to go home.

Carol said...

Isn't it interesting that this usually happens in high profile cases. Public thinks they are guilty but jury finds them innocent. Maybe she can move in with Jose. I don't think he's married and I think they would make a perfect couple. Now she can even have another baby. God forbid!

Carol, just because the state didn't prove its case & the 12 jurors found her not guilty of the serious felony charges, in no way means
she is innoncent...just that the state failed
to prove it...

Where does she go now...how likely that the family welcomes her back...that should be interesting...& she probably walks shortly, since the maximum penalty for the 4 lying counts is 4 years & she's been in jail awhile...so time served & she's out pretty quick..

Anonymous said...

About those lying counts....to me finding her guilty of those misd..is a slap in the face to the prosecutors....what did she lie about?, if not matters involving the dead child....

Anonymous said...

And who gets her first interview $$$$...will be interesting to see who squires her through the media whirl that will happen soon enough...

And now do the parents get to sell their stories or are they yesterday's news....

And what about the jurors...who gets them to talk first...you know they have to get their 15 minutes...& how much $$$

So far seems everyone surrounding the place is shocked, stunned & agrees with you that she
got away with it...just the 12 jurors & I guess
maybe Jan believes she wasn't guilty of any of the serious charges...

Carol said...

Coreen, I'm home and I'm still grieving. This is worse than OJ for me.

Innocent on all counts??? These are the facts that are not in dispute!

Caylee was in the care and custody of her mother Casey.

The child disappears for 31 days and it would have been longer if Cindy hadn't found Casey and forced her to bring her home.

She lied about everything while her child rots in the woods.

She partied her ass off while her child rots in the woods.

She said she was kidnapped and didn't report it to a single soul.

The child is dead!

If that isn't enough to have some child abuse or negligent homicide conviction????

I hope Casey never finds a minutes peace for the rest of her life. The jury wasn't very proud of their decision were they?? They are hiding out.

She can even have another child.

And I will watch Nancy Grace tonight. And I hope she's mad, mad, mad.

Carol said...

I think one problem is that some of us knew so much more of the facts than the jury knew. I think the prosecution spent too much time with some of the forensics. They were disjointed and confusing. I could barely stand to listen to it. There was a lot more human testimony that should have been included. But hindsight is always 20/20.

Carol said...

Even almost all of the defense talking heads were convinced of Casey's guilt. The only one who held fast with innocence is the woman who worked earlier for this defense team. Usually most of the defense experts alway side with the defense.

Carol said...

George and Cindy put out a statement thru their attorney: "Despite the baseless defense chosen by Casey Anthony, the family believes that the jury made a fair decision"

Anonymous said...

Carol, after you wind down from the shock...

tonite at 8 pm repeat of AGT then at 9pm looks like those selected earlier compete for the final 48 spots...

Anonymous said...

So are the parents still in denial...or was
that statement crafted by their attorney just for show...

Carol said...

Parents know she is guilty but had to say that the jury's decision was fair.

Carol said...

I believe the parents knew she was guilty from day 1. George never waiver on that belief but Cindy tried to go into some denial because I think she felt somewhat guilty for having enabled Casey. Yep, Cindy was guilty of enabling but that doesn't excuse Casey's horrible behavior.

You might or might not remember all Casey's acting sad when the jury was in the room. They purposely positioned the defense table directly accross from the jury. Heard that today. Casey's demeanor changed when they were not in the room. The jury was had.

Carol said...

Jury didn't ask for any evidence. They rushed to a decision. One of them had a vacation scheduled on July 7 to go on a cruise. Can't believe that all 12 agreed to that verdict. Muliple polls done on the public had over 80 believing guilty.

Carol said...

And just because Casey was found innocent by that jury doesn't mean she will be found innocent by public opinion. There are a lot of outraged people in her area and she might want to leave town soon.

Carol said...

And Coreen, my grief will take a little time. You realize how invested I was in this trial. I devoured all of the evidence. But I'll have to admit that I think they overdid the forensics and it distracted. Sometimes less is more.

Carol said...

And remember OJ was found innocent also. I rest my case!

Carol said...

I'm watching Nancy Grace. Usually I can barely stand her but tonight...she's my BFF.

Carol said...

I pray the media doesn't make her a millionaire after this. They probably will.

Carol said...

The defense team's yukking it up, clapping, jumping up and down celebrating disgusts me. I guess they forgot a 2 year old child was left rotting in a swamp. They should have done this outside the public view!

And Dr. Drew agrees!

Carol said...

Jesse Grund, Casey's former fiancee is on NG and he says he's shocked and angry with the verdict! He's says this was not a search for the truth, it's about winning at all cost.

Carol said...

Casey's aunt said she was appauled and angry at the jury and said they were either not too bright or just lazy. Hmmmm.

I made a few cast until the mosquitos found me. That big rain today woke them from their slumber. When they started to lift me off the wharf, I decided I'd better come in.

I live in what our license plates rightly label Sportsman's Paradise but in the summer, between the heat and the mosquitos, that come out mostly at night, all but the most hardy of sportsman are robbed of any ability to enjoy this paradise.

Carol said...

Coreen, Jane Valez Mitchell told Nancy that she didn't think there would be many in the media who would offer Casey money for her story. I hope she's right about that. Considering public opinion and Casey's reputation for lying I don't know who would want to hear from her. I certainly will not watch any program that has her on.

Carol said...

If there would be anyone that I might like to see have Casey on TV..that would be Dr. Phil. He'd have her for lunch. He's pretty good at calling people on their BS but I think she would know better than go on his show.

Then he would offer to pay for her psychotherapy. She could use a lot of that. But that still won't bring that precious child back...

Carol said...

I always worry about those football players.. when they are celebrating a great play..and the other players come up and jump on them. I cring every time. They have enough trauma playing..so they don't need more celebrating.

Carol said...

Ya know..I'd love to hear from the people who thought Casey was innocent. I want to understand how..if they were actually knowledgable of all the facts.. they can explain those facts in this case in a rational way to explain how those facts point to innocence. I would love to hear it. I want to understand.

I have heard some explain how the jury might have come up with that answer and it makes some sense and it could have also happened with the OJ case.

It is similar to Stockholm syndrome. These jurors were held captive for over 6 weeks..trapped with their captor Casey..and started to identify with her. As a sociopath Casey played a role. Even that female attorney played a role. She patted and hugged Casey and gave her endearing looks throughout the trial. That wasn't an accident. It does make sense.

That same lawyer was the one who was jumping up and down with joy at the celebration after the verdict.

And then..maybe some people can identify with Casey.

Carol, what was that you reported that Jane Velez said she didn't think Casey Anthony would get any $$$$ from this melodrama...Right when pigs fly....

Dr. Drew gets interview with prosecutor Ashton

The lead prosecutor Ashton was already on Today show this am...did not see it,just the news clip...

Only a matter of how much & when...any # of the

We were sick about acquitting casey

Anonymous said...

And I will mention to you again...

there is a difference between innocence & a finding of guilt or not...

if the jury did not believe the state produced adequate evidence to find her guilty of any of the charges, then they vote not guilty, it appears the state did not prove its case to those 12 jurors... but again that does not mean she is innocent...

and remember all the other facts that the world
had access to, were not available to the jury...

I don't like the outcome...I told you once I found out the child was missing a month w/o her
doing a thing...that sealed it for me...but its over, end of the sordid story....

Carol said...

Coreen,

I saw all of that and I'm cool with Ashton, family members and, even the one who I feel is another sociopath, Baez doing interviews but Casey is a liar. Even her attorney called her a liar and a slut. What would anyone want in an interview with a liar. The only true statement she made was her daughter's name and birthdate.

Like I said earlier, maybe Dr Phil would be a good interview. He calls um like he sees um. And he would call her out in a heartbeat. I saw him with homeless guy and he didn't cut him any slack.

Jane VM said that with all the negative public opinion re Casey, media institutions may want to think twice about having her on. No one wants to see her profit from this, well, almost everyone. Maybe those who think she was a poor pityful misunderstood girl who just wanted to have fun. They may be cool with it.

Vinnie Politan was talking about juror #3. He was hot because her rational for her decision was because she couldn't decide on punishment. That is not her responsibility and shouldn't have even been considered. These jurors didn't spend much time with the jury instructions and that was plain to see after spending only 10 hours deliberating. They just wanted to go home.

I'm still very sad and angry about this. To not even find her guilty of negligent homicide??? What is not negligent about her actions, actions that were not even in dispute and ended up with a dead child in her custody????

They are wondering who will take her in when she is released. I suggest that her wonderful defense attorneys should take her in. Maybe she can pay them back by babysitting their kids.

Carol said...

And the order is....beyond a "reasonable" doubt. Not a shadow of a doubt. Not a hint of a doubt. Not that you doubt exactly what ended up killing her. Not.....I could go on.

I have long realized and it was stuffed down my throat again here, that there are a significant number of people who can't reason.

You know that I went thru almost every possible explanation as to why, how, what possessed Casey. I tried to give her every benefit of a doubt. I didn't want to totally buy her guilt.

Finally reason won out with me. All I really needed to know was that she had care and custody of little Caylee. She lost little Caylee but didn't mention it to anyone. She didn't get anyone to help her find the little girl. Then she partied like it was 1999. That speaks volumes!

Carol said...

Oh, and I forgot to add one very important fact, not in dispute...she was found dead, bagged, and left in the woods to rot! When they added too much of the other crap, they confused people.

Carol said...

And with Baez's opening remarks it seems he, along with his client, knew Caylee was dead and knew for a while.

Carol said...

I said this a good while back and I still think this... Casey would benefit from having a reason to remain in jail for a while. Jail will be a safer environment than the "free world" will be for her. It will take a while for public outrage to die down. It may be worse karma for her getting out right now.

Carol said...

That psychologist who testified did mention that they weren't covering this trial much in Europe.

Carol said...

Coreen, I was not going to mention any of this today or even make any comments here.

I work with people every day who are victims of the miscarrage of justice. I see more of the opposite from what happened to Casey..those who are most likely innocent and stuck in jail or sent to prison.

I didn't even feel comfortable here commenting on this case until I got the facts. I taped and watched every minute of this trial, some parts several times. I only FF thru the commercials and commentary. I didn't want to hear from the talking heads, I didn't have time. I was usually up until at least midnight hearing all the testimony.

Carol said...

http://www.wftv.com/pdf/28467503/detail.html

Baez kinda gave them that gift by announcing in his opening remarks that Caylee died from drowning on day 1. He couldn't have said that if it didn't come from Casey. It seems that that admission would open up the field for both the State to recup their costs and for Equisearch to recup their costs. Equisearch said that they possibly plan to also take on Baez and Casey's parents.

If she is sued..she will not be able to avoid taking the witness stand or plead the 5th in that trial. That's what happen to OJ in the litigation against him after his not guilty trial.

Carol said...

Today, I heard on Issues with Jane that Baez has signed up with some big agent. He told Jane that Casey hasn't.

I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that he plans on selling Casey's story and whatever else she can sell. They pay him, he holds the money and then he pays all of Casey's living expenses. He can get a nice cut for himself and protect that money from any successful litigation against Casey. Those two sociopaths were made for each other. Wait and see!

Anyone ever had this candy when you were growing up....

I know it came from NY Coney Island, but pretty sure it was sold all over...

It went out of existence for a time...but it seems someone bought the old rights & recently started selling them again...

Here's the company website....with a history of the candy...

Sorry to have been away for so long. We have had several friends and family with serious illness and John's best friend here in NM died last Friday. We are on the road again towards Tulsa. My sister's husband has been in hosp for a week with complications related to his lung cancer. My sis is having cataract surgery tues. We are going to Tulsa to help her out with all of this. She needs someone to take her for all her appts as her doc says she is not safe to drive because of her vision. Her daughter lives 20 miles from her and has had her own crises.

We are in Weatherford tonight. It is 108 here. We are glad we live in Alb. where the hi today will be mid 90's.

I had to take some time to ponder what just happened over the last 6 weeks. It's greatly disturbed me and it will continue to for a while and I don't want to torment you guys with it. I've never been one who can say..oh well..Que Sera Sera..not my problem. I..unfortunately take on other people's problems as my own.

I have a lot of theories as to why and how this jury came to their conclusions but I won't share that because I know you don't care about that and it's just my speculation.

I know this young woman is guilty. I know that her mother..father..brother..aunt..grandmother and friends..all know she is guilty even though her mom..dad..and brother didn't want her to die for this crime. I didn't either. If I had any doubt it would have to be in the area of premeditation and I feel it still does meet the "legal" critera of premeditation.

It distresses me greatly that a 25 year old fertile..promiscuious woman who is sociopathic is being set out in the "free world" and can very likely do it again. Don't think that that can't happen. She's expressed the desire for more children. She's already gotten away with murder once and of her own precious flesh and blood. What else is she also capable of???

I can't bare that that little precious child looked into the eyes of the person she loved..trusted and needed the most and watched her snuff out her life.

If you had to take one single fact that screamed the loudest in this entire case..erase everything else you learned..it would be that she was not be in the least bit concerned about the whereabouts of her child.

I freak out if I lose Maggie for a couple of minutes when she finds a new place to hide when it thunders. I'm in a panic until I find her and I can only imagine how a mother of a human child must feel when she misplaces her child for a short while.

There's a new law that is being proposed. It's called Caylee's Law and you can go to the website and sign a petition in favor of it if you desire. It's called Caylee's Law.

"Caylee's Law" would make it a felony for parents or caregivers to not report the death of a child to authorities -- accidental or otherwise -- within one hour. It also would make it a felony for guardians to not notify law enforcement of the disappearance of a child within 24 hours".

Create Caylee's Law

The petition already has almost a million signitures. It's really sad that they have to make it a law but it's something they learned from this very sad case.

Carol said...

And Coreen..I think it is soooo cool about your Derek and how the other team jumped in to celebrate. That's the way it should be.

Carol said...

And my grandma used to bring us some kind of taffy from up north when she came down to visit. I don't think it was your taffy but you Yanks much like taffy. It was good but I haven't noticed much taffy down here in the swamp.

Carol said...

And what do you think about our boy Hines and his DUI?? He refused a breathilyer test. I don't know about Georgia but down in the swamp..if you refuse a breathilyer..it's an admission of guilt.

I read where he was driving out of his lane and on the curb and failed a field sobriety but then said he wasn't drunk. I don't know too many drunks that think they are drunk. That's why they continue to get caught driving drunk over and over.

I tried to look up the Georgia law and it seems it's the same there as it is here but I saw all these high dollar attorneys who had out their shingles advertising that they can get ya out of it for the right price.

That's our system of justice here..for the right price..or the right jury...or the right attorney..you can get away with anything.

Carol said...

Attorneys have learned a lot with this CA case. Not really good things. You see the benefit of those jury selection experts. That's a big business. They can pick you a jury who will be very sympathetic to your cause.

You can see how an unethical attorney can present information in his opening that he has no evidence to support and doesn't ever present evidence to support but it still plants a seed that no one can dig out once it is planted. They would have needed Casey to take the stand to support that evidence but they never intended to put her on. I even think that she might have wanted to because she sees herself as a very good liar. That is why the defense stopped the trial and had that competence hearing. They didn't want her on the stand.

jan said...

Carol, you are not the only one obsessed with the CA case. I can't get away from it. It is not that I don't care. So many children ( and I see them in my work) are homeless and families are trying so hard to make ends meet.

As for the comparison with the OJ case. We know there was a murder in that situation - 2 murders in fact. We don't know for a fact that there was even a murder in this case. I have my own ideas about what may have happened - ideas that have were not explored in the court, or in the media. However, the jury has reached their decision and I support the system in this case.

Carol said...

that giving him 4 boxseats for the remainder of the season's games, & if the playoffs too, is really shabby...& he was dumb not to hold out for a big payout...the guy Christian Lopez
did not want any $$$, just to meet Derek & all
the callers & most of the hosts think he was
duped by the yankees, the sheer glee of the moment & he didn't know what he was doing...

Any thoughts...

Carol said...

Well Coreen, I think that the guy who caught that ball should have been able to make up his own mind up about what he wanted. He chose to give it back and he got those nice box seats in return. Nobody else's business. Not everyone is greedy.

Carol said...

I've been pondering our jury system and it is worrisome that many who do get stuck with jury duty are people who just can't get out of it. Some are uneducated and they are left with some serious responsibilities.

Several years ago there was this peds NP in town who was sued because she failed to make a diagnosis and the child did end up with some medical consequences. She lost the litigation. It was a rare disorder and even the veteran docs in town hadn't seen a similar case before.

One of the jurors, a security guard, happened to work at my jail. He told her lawyer that one reason he went against her was because he didn't like the NP at the jail...me. If that wasn't a bad enough reason to rule against her, I'd never met the guy before.

I ran into him one day after hearing that and asked him about that comment. He admitted he didn't know me and mixed up one of the LPNs that worked at the jail for me. He didn't like her. Now that's just one example of how some jurors make decisions. Not a good thing. But I don't know how we could develop a better system.

Carol said...

I do hope that no one is crazy enough to go after the jury in the CA case. Can't blame them for what they think. They are just unlucky enough to have been picked for this jury. A good bit of the testimony was way above their heads. Even with my science background, I had to pause, get up and do something and then come back to refocus. They were stuck.

Another criticism is that the prosecution didn't present the forensics first. They needed to have some of the more compelling people testimony closer to the end. One of the veteran attorney's interviewed said that is more often the way testimony is ordered. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I had read the same that was in your article about Baez that's why I call him a sociopath. He was a charmer to the jury. He always talked to them so sweetly, sucking up. It makes a difference.

On the other hand, Ashton always looked angry and hostile. His demeaner even put me off at times. I kinda think that jury didn't like him at all and believe me, I now realize it does make a big difference.

Carol said...

Coreen, what did you think of Caylee's Law? I do think that it mainly applies to young children, not teenagers.

Carol said...

I signed the petition.

Carol said...

And something else that I find interesting is that if a child is found triple bagged and totally decomposed in the woods..not even considering the duct tape over the face..that some people think that that is NOT a sign of a murder or at least one of those lessor included charges.

That medical examiner..Dt G said that in her experience as a medical examiner..accidents are reported 100% of the time. There's always the possiblity of saving the child.

Maybe a child chokes on a toy..turn blue and passes out. Is it acceptable to bag the child and depose of them??

I really don't think why or how has to be determined to convict of murder or one of those lessor charges even if not necesarily premeditated. I'd say we better get that Caylee's Law passed really fast. At least that would have kept Casey off the streets for a few more years.

Also that would allow the public outrage some time to calm down. We are outraged because someone got away with something so terribly wrong and we care! I'm glad that the majority of the people following this case aren't happy about what happened. If we said..oh well..I'd be concerned for our society.

Solar said...

See ya...

Carol said...

And someone almost fell over the ledge again at that derby trying to catch a ball. What's going on there Coreen? Does that happen often or is there a new design making it happen more often or what?

Carol said...

Ya know Coreen..I wish I had never got involved in that trial. I had no real preconcieved thoughts about it when I started to watch it. I wasn't into it when it first happened. I could have even qualified for the jury with my lack of knowledge about what happened. While watching the trial..I pondered that damn thing every which way and back.

I think that is hit so many of us because it involved that sweet little girl. That age is one of my favorite for little children. They are so cute at that age that when I see one..I just want to pluck them up and squeeze them with a hug. I looked into that child's eyes a good part of every day for over 6 weeks..before work..at lunch..after work and until past midnight. She could have been my little girl.

I even related to some of the dysfunctional family dynamics in the Anthony family and I think many people watching did also. There was probably something for all of us. I could see parts of my mom in Cindy in her harsh judgement of some of my sisters..more than me but me also at times. I could see things about some of my nephews and nieces in Casey. One of the TV talking heads mentioned this and suggested it is why we all got so wrapped up in the trial and the outcome.

Many of us have shared some of the dysfunctional experiences that Casey did but didn't react the way she did.. thank God.

I realized I was irritating some here with my talking about this case. It's not like I'm yakking in anyone's ear. You can page down. No one has to read it but it does serve as therapy for me. And this is why I started this place..so I wouldn't torment others with my thoughts that no one is interested in hearing. It's a place to ponder.

Carol said...

I believe that everyone should leave that jury alone. I think that there does need to be some studying of how they thought and why they came up with what they came up with..if they choose to share it. I don't think their names should ever be published.

So far it has become obvious that they didn't understand their instructions but they also didn't seem to spend the time to do it either.

Prosecutors learned that they must spend more time explaining important issues to the jury before letting them loose..even like circumstancial evidence. I even heard here that all they had was circumstantial evidence. That's usually all they have with most crimes.

I heard a good explanation last night for circumstantial evidence. It was explained as...if you wake up in the morning..go outside and the yard is wet..the pavement is wet..there's puddles in the road..you realize that it must have rained. You may not have seen it..or heard it..or understand what causes rain..but you know that it rained.

Carol said...

And Coreen..one healthy way to deal with grief and loss is to talk about it. Getting that anger and saddness out keeps it from wrecking havoc on the innards. Some of those silent grievers are the ones who go out and hurt someone.

But I do understand that others do get tired of hearing about someone else's grief.

Anonymous said...

Carol, I don't mind reading your thoughts & views, but am concerned that you get so personally involved in these issues that it may impact you negatively....

While we have the ability to influence our own personal surroundings, public events for the most part are beyond one's control...while one
may observe & react to those events to a degree, internalizing them can be detremental to oneself...

Carol said...

Coreen, there are so many things in my life that effect me personally every day that that trial is only a drop in the bucket, ie my job and family issues.

I'm tough and I'm already coming to grips with the outcome of the trial. I've been pondering why circumstances seemed to go in her favor like the police not going to the site where the remains were found and her acquittal. I mentioned earlier that jail might be her safest environment.

I'm starting to think that the Universe doesn't want her to get off that easy. I don't think she will get a chance to live that beautiful life she so desired. She may not be able to live and party anywhere. Will she be able to find a job? Who will support her? Her history of lying and theft won't likely change. Karma will catch up with her.

Carol said...

Another sad issue here is that George may have been unfairly trashed because of this little lying, stealing girl who can only benefit from throwing dad under the bus.

He's been accused of molesting his daughter. Casey never told anyone that he did. She wrote to a jail friend that her brother watched her by flashlight at night and she found her sport's bra over her breasts when her brother was in the room at night but no one asked him, at trial, if he molested his sister..no one! Casey also reported to her ex fiancee Jesse that her brother molested her, not her father.

The only mention of anything about her father to anyone is that she mentioned in one of those jailhouse letters that she might have dreamed that her father did something to her. Might have dreamed????? Not a good bases for the trashing that poor man got.

Even if we do know that molestation of children is quite common, it's not always the father. And it's a really easy accusation to make and very impossible to defend oneself against.

And the reason some don't believe George is because he might have had an affair with that River Cruise woman and lied about it. If having an affair with another adult makes a person a child molester we're in big trouble. Or if lying about it because you don't think it's anyones business and it has nothing to do with this crime makes someone a child molester.....

Men ought to be irrate over what Casey has done and it's the young men who are in the group most supportive of her.

Carol said...

Coreen, why didn't you mention the "News Of The World" scandals. Hey, I think I have part of my liver left to sacrifice.

Carol, I accept your wanting to discuss the CA trial and result. I am just not interested any longer in the whole thing. The jury has given their verdict.

When I wrote earlier NOT GUILTY etc. etc. it was in response to the not guilty verdict by the jury. I don't have ESP. I was sick and tired of the entire escapade by that time and chose to stay away until my own emotions had "died" down. I don't need any more stress in my life. I have enough already. I am trying through the dream stuff I am doing and some meditation to keep a balanced life.

I will read what you write here, but I will not comment any more on the CA case. It has become a media circus and I would not be surprised to hear that grown people have died as a result of the extreme emotion and stress caused by it. Personally, I think Jane Velez is nuts. She is coming across as "bonkers." When anything about the case comes on a station I am watching on TV, I change the station.

Carol, I care about you and want to continue to enjoy our relationship here so I will just write what I am pondering. What I love about your blog is what you have always said - and that is- that we can each share what we want without being judged here. I hope that is still true.

Carol said...

I certainly don't expect that anyone will want to read or discuss some of the things I comment on here. I started the place because I wanted to be able to ponder out loud and wanted to do it somewhere besides in my head. As I've stated before, I'm not even sure how I feel about things until I write or talk about them.

When I first opened the swamp, I never dreamed anyone would join me here. It was just a place to ponder and ramble. It's was a nice surprise when others showed up.

I enjoy pondering politics, well, I used to until that got so crazy mixed up. I'll get interested again but I'm taking a break. I know no one from around my neck of the woods who wants to hear anything about politics so I have to hold my tongue.

When I get together with my big sis for a visit she sets the agenda for what we talk about or even watch on TV. We can only discuss things that are not stressful. I can handle that for a couple of weeks but it does take some of the joy out of the visit.

Almost in all areas of my life I have to follow other people's rules for what I can or can't talk about. I wanted one place where I didn't have any rules.

At times, I feel like there are certain things I can and can't write about here. I think I've run people off because of some of the things I've chosen to write about. If I try to stick with what I think everyone might find acceptable I'd probably be limited to the weather. I do like to ponder the weather.

I guess I'm not like many others in that I don't try to avoid stressful things. I couldn't even if I wanted to. I ponder many stressful things, try to make sense of them, and try to figure out what there is about those stressful situations that I can learn.

The criminal justice system is particularly interesting to me since it is where I spend a good bit of my life. I also find all aspects of human behavior, good and evil, very interesting. I'm even more interested in people who don't think at all like I do. They really fascinate me.

Carol said...

I still keep up the the Anthony case and will until she disappears into the ozone. I stick with the Dr Drew and Joy Behar coverage. Both are more level headed.

Coreen, the other night Joy had on three women who are going to be in the show.."I married a mobster". I thought about you and that show you talked about, Mob Wives. Two of the women were married to mobsters, both of their husbands or ex husbands are in prison now and one, Linda Scarpa, was the daughter of a mobster who died in jail. He was known as the Grim Reaper. Ever heard of him? The show is or was on Investigation Discovery.

Tonight Joy has on Roseanne Barr. She has a new show called Roseannes Nuts, a new lifetime reality series. I might check that one out. I think she lives on a nut farm.

Carol said...

Lately I've been very disgusted with our criminal justice system. At work I see poor homeless people who keep being picked up because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time and that's just about all the time.

At times I've thought that they may be better off in the joint with a place to sleep and three squares, not from a garbage can, but they don't share that feeling. Some don't seem to mind being homeless. I begged one to please head back to Texas, sorry Nemo, because that is where he is from. He's been back about 4 times in the last 8 months. I'm starting to feel like we are related.

I see people who are stuck in jail for simple little crimes, with a tiny little bond, but they don't have any family or a penny to get out while others, who are charged with horrible crimes, can get out because they can afford to bond out. What's fair about that?

I'm still frustrated about what happened in the Anthony case and I just heard today about some perv in Washington State who can sit and watch the porn videos he made molesting 20 something children because he is representing himself and that's his legal right to examine the evidence..as long as he wants to watch it.

I do think one of the things that can be learned from the Anthony case and one is that we need to get rid of the death penalty. IMO..it is likely a significant reason for the jury's verdict. They couldn't even risk a verdict that might end in the death penalty and that's where I do agree. The prosecution was too hell bent on first degree murder. I wasn't.

There was something listed in the evidence that was found downloaded on the Anthony computer. It was a little cartoon that had a child standing next to a teddy bear that was hanging from a hangman's rope. It said something like...why do they kill people who kill people to show that it's wrong to kill people. That concept doesn't make much sense to me either.

You didn't chase me away...just waiting for you to change the f.....subject once in a while...I love to live stressful, but only when it;s fun:

I sometimes had as many as three projects going at one time...what a rush...and it was stressful...but i think in a positive challenging way....

love to hear your thoughts...not one (then you only get one answer )thought...you have depth ...later...oh and love and light.

I'm sorry Solar but you don't actually make the rules here. This is where I stress over things I'm stressing over..cope with my grief.

Most of my life I've been somewhat approval seeking. My family..friends and coworkers all knew how to manipulate me..either to get me to do things they didn't want to do or to push my buttons to set me off on something I felt strongly about..usually for their entertainment.

This is one place I thought I would not be manipulated in some way.

Another child case. Little boy in NY going home and asked the wrong person for directions . A clear and simple case of murder here. He was a dear little child too. Children are vulnerable and must be protected whenever possible. what was sad was it was his first time to walk by himself - 7 blocks and parents said they walked the route with him. It seems he still missed a turn - or something.

Hi Solar, we love to hear your thoughts too.

Carol, I don't understand why you think you are being manipulated and . I have never thought I set the agenda. I usually tell more personal stuff - and maybe people don't want to hear that, but sometimes that is all I have to say. It is ok with me if people don't respond to what I have to say.

Carol and Coreen, I pulled out of here for a few days after the CA verdict. It felt to me like I was being asked to justify my thoughts and feelings about the case. I was not agreeing with the two of you and felt somewhat attacked because of that. Maybe I am just taking things too personally but that is how I felt.

No Honey, I don't make the rules here or anywhere, not even in my home. They sort of balance themselves out.

But when someone I care for is hurting in some way that they can avoid it without compromising themselves...then I feel that I have to say so.

You know how i feel about religion...my wife Judy loves her church, she sings in the choir, and goes to mass every Sunday...not once have I asked her, or implied that she not go....and like you I wouldn't let her manipulate me into going.....

Same with my son....even while growing up he had choices to make...but I would not keep still if I thought that he made the wrong choice over and over....

Imo you don't have to think of this as manipulation...if you change the name to some other kid, person or whomever.....the same story will be around until the end of time.!

I used to do the same about children that died by gun fire from GANGS..they died while watching tv, or studying, or having dinner, by stray bullets...it pissed me off to no end...it still does...but I realized that will not likely change...hope it does diminish tho cos i love kids.....

Jan, all we were doing was asking for you to explain your rationale for your not guilty opinion and you are welcome to say "noneya", which means none of your business. We certainly don't agree often around here and that's cool.

And we trended here about the same as they are reporting in the media for the general public...2/3 for guilty and 1/3 for not guilty.

Juror #3 the nursing student said that on first vote, 2 of the jurors voted for first degree and 6 or 12 voted for aggravated manslaughter. They didn't think the woman was innocent. Mark my words, Casey will be back in jail before too very long. Sociopaths don't change their spots.

And I did hear about that poor little boy and several other horrible dead children. Good thing that guy who killed and dismembered the little boy confessed. They may have hired the new dream team and got him off because they couldn't find enough of his body parts to figure out what exactly killed him.

And social media is now being involved in these criminal cases. They are monitoring the sites to figure out the best way to manipulate the jury. Our advanced technology does have some serious drawbacks.

And Solar, you are welcome to try to manipulate all you want. It might work at times and not work at other times. You do like to play peacemaker.

And Jan, your 3 not guiltys in all caps with exclamation marks was yelling. You might as well added...nah, nah, nah nah, nah. Actually, that pissed me off more than the verdict, especially when you dropped that bomb and ran like a little girl. But that's OK also.

It looks like Casey and Co are planning on trying to make a mint on her unfortunate child's death. I promise I will not watch a thing the media does with or about that girl and will boycott any station or product that supports it. If all the toilet paper companies are involved, I'll be finding another way to wipe my ass.

Jan, sorry that you took the questions as being
an attack...for me, it was just wanting to understand what you may have heard/seen that
defeated the state's case...

To this day, I have not heard a single thing
(from the juror's that have spoken) that makes
any sense as to their verdict...

I will say again, this jury was incompetent
& failed to properly evaluate the evidence...it is clear each time they say more
that they did not understand the instructions
& failed miserably...& as I said a few days
ago, for me its over & done...

Carol, for you, it may not be over & as I said
I can read your views, may not have anything
to comment about, but respect your desire
to as you say ponder....
