Thought it was a good day to share pumpkins
from Silverman's Farm...This will be another
busy weekend there...In the 3rd pic from the bottom, to the right you can see Route 59, which is the road I go up/down daily....

As you can see they have lots of pumpkins,
gourds, mums, & the apple orchard where you can
walk up & pick apples...& they sell pies, cider, as well...

by the end of the week I could see red apples on the trees as I drive by...until this week they were green...and across the road from the orchard they have a tiny animal farm...where you can feed the tiny goats & deer...

As you can see there has been some color change
to the trees, by the end of this week, there have been even more color changes...

More to come....

Coreen,
Amazing pictures. Sure puts me in the mood for fall. I like the round hay bales with the painted pic of the pig. How clever. I do miss the colors of fall where you have the maple and other trees.

Just got home to one very nice surprise and one not so nice surprise. Coreen, your pics are the very nice surprise and very Fallish. You can certainly see the change of the seasons up there. Looking out my windows here, nada, but the temps are very nice.

The not so nice surprise is the score for the Yanks games. They have to stop doing this. Maybe they like the challenge of playing catch up. If the Rangers want to win one, this might be the one they would need to win, at home

Beautiful pictures of beautiful Connecticut, Coreen. I haven't seen any pumpkin patches here yet this year, so I showed the pics to Emma.

You all may have seen this already, and it's probably no surprise to any one, but still... more proof.

Scientists suggest that cancer is purely man-made
Cancer is a modern, man-made disease caused by environmental factors such as pollution and diet, a study by University of Manchester scientists has strongly suggested.
“Yet again extensive ancient Egyptian data, along with other data from across the millennia, has given modern society a clear message – cancer is man-made and something that we can and should address.” http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/news/display/?id=6243

Jan, I am glad to see that your new attorney was able to ask your sister some of the tough questions that were hard for you to ask. Hope this all works out for you in the end.

Mary, Hope you let us know how you and little Lauren are doing.

She'll be celebrating her first Halloween, her first Thanksgiving and her first Christmas soon.

Ooooh, and welcoming in the New Year! 2011!! - they just keep rolling by.

Ivy, if you're still reading the blog, it sure would be nice to hear how you're doing - and your daughter in her new home. Hope all is going well.

Hi Chloe,
Interesting info about cancer. I look forward to reading the link you left.

Coreen, I wish we could all visit Silverman's farm. How delightful.

Good morning all,

It is a true autumn day here...sunny, blue sky, brisk, about 60, but no more wind today...leaves are definitely changing colors & dropping...driveway & street is covered, but it will take til the end of November before all the leaves are off the trees...

Pulling out fall/winter clothes...& packing
the summer things away....

How quickly time seems to move these days...October half gone already...

Carol, the game was pretty bad...when your starters don't pitch & the batters don't really hit...trouble....but now back to the
friendly confines of the Stadium....

Carol said...

Saints looked like their old selves today, maybe even better. They won playing Tampa, 31-6.

Chloe, I really think that we survive so many things that may have taken the weaker of us at an earlier date that we live long enough to die of cancers. I do think we consume lots of poisons also that weren't around way back. Probably much they sell us to help us live longer will actually kill us faster. But who knows???

Carol said...

Yesterday when I scanning the football games I saw where that football player, Roethlisberger, was getting a ovation when he returned to play for his team. I wasn't sure what they were talking about but I thought I remembered some sex charges against him. I googled it and saw where he had been accused of sexual assault three different times. Evidently he was coming back from a 4 game suspension for the last one.

Michael Vick got more flack for abusing animals, which I think he definitely deserved, than this dude got from abuse of women. Sounds about right. I just wonder how many of those cheering for his return were women.

Just a ponder, don't need a response. Just want you to realize where we fall in the pecking order. But actually I also place dogs ahead of most humans, but not one particular sex.

Carol said...

Ivy, I'd also like to know if you are OK. How your shoulder is doing and how MGS is doing up in Portland? It will be interesting to hear how she likes the rainy season. That will come later. It's probably the best weather up there now. I think the Seattle area had more cool weather this summer.

Carol said...

Do any of you believe these polls saying that Repubs are going to overwhelming win in this upcoming election?? If they do really win, I will assume that there are too many people taking drugs that screw up their brains and memories.

I agree that the Dems didn't fix much but the things that people hate about what the Dems couldn't do, we must realize, is because the Repubs fought it so much. The Dems could only sneak in a few fixes. And the problems they couldn't fix were mostly the result of what the Repubs did to us in the first place.

Carol said...

And we will never fix any of this mess until we can find a way to get all this special interest and secret money out of elections. Since the recipients of that money make the rules....we're screwed.

Carol said...

Coreen, I read where there were millions in New York metro area who aren't getting Fox on their cable due to some negotiation problems and can't watch the BB playoffs. My satelitte doesn't even include Fox in their local option but I can get it with a regular antennae. Are you included in that problem??

Did everyone already see this? This article has a good little instruction chart for those of us (me) that have never had to do CPR. I think I'll try to enlarge it, and post it on my fridge.

CPR switch: Chest presses first, then give breaths
"New guidelines out Monday switch up the steps for CPR, telling rescuers to start with hard, fast chest presses before giving mouth-to-mouth.

The change puts "the simplest step first" for traditional CPR......

.......... for the last two years, they've been advising local paramedics to start with chest compressions and keep them up with minimal interruptions. That, along with intensive training, has helped improve survival rates, he said.

He said they found paramedics hadn't been starting compressions until the patient was in the ambulance and lost time getting airway equipment together.

"The best chance was to start chest compressions in the house, immediately,..." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101018/ap_on_he_me/us_med_hands_first_cpr

"I really think that we survive so many things that may have taken the weaker of us at an earlier date"

I've certainly noticed that with animals, Carol. Genetics are so strong, that it's almost scary. Not that I don't think we can do things to change them slightly, but still - like I said, scary that we are pre-programmed for so many things.

Then, more of the programming came in our childhood, when we were so vulnerable and unable to make distinctions. It sure can take a lot of work as adults, realizing there are many alternative ways of thinking.

Are you happily back to work, Jan?

Hope you are recovering from all the legal jungle you've had to deal with, and your life can get back to normal in the mean time.

Chloe, Still pondering increase in cancer incidence. Another important factor
is the more frequent exposure to radiation from medical
and other sources. In the olden days
physical exam was more often used for diagnosis
but now xrays are too often done. That is
significant radiation exposure and radiation does cause cancer.

Anonymous said...

I agree, Carol. Xrays, excessive drugs, environmental toxins: including pesticides and artificial ingredients (ex. preservatives). The list could go on and on. Water, air and food. We're being attacked from all sides.

..... and I'm not even going to mention stress. Yikes!

Carol, yes Cablevision/Fox controversy removed
my NY Fox network channel & a local NY Fox channel...but in CT I also get the Fox network
channel by way of Hartford, so if they don't
come up with a resolution before the World Series, I would be able to see it on the Hartford feed....(naturally, I will only care
if my Yankees are in it!!!)....

A lot of NY Giant fans in the NYC area were not
happy campers though since Fox NY football usually
carries the Giants games in this area....they
were blacked out...the Hartford feed does not
necessarily show the Giants games....

The American League Championship games are still on the TBS channel, so that is not part of the fight...why the National League is on the Fox Network, I have no idea...

Tonight it will be pretty chilly in the Stadium...it got overcast before dark, & a little breezy...look for the fans to be bundled
up good, since it will be downright cold by the end of the game....See you later...

Carol said...

I have two things I want to watch at 7p so I decided I'm going to record DWTS and watch the BB game. There is something unsatisfying about watching a sport's events after the game is over but DWTS will be just as much fun to watch later. I guess I caught the fever, huh Coreen?

Did I hear right that the guy pitching for the Rangers tonight wants to play for the Yanks next year?

Coreen said...

I guess you are hooked Carol....but I told you
many times, baseball is the best...I just love this game (well for me, only my beloved Yankees)....

I am counting on Andy pitching like he has so many times in the past playoffs...if he is ok,
we will win...all the talk since Saturday here
has been about Cliff Lee, but Andy is still our
guy...& Yankee bats need to get going too...

Can't you switch between innings?...what did we
do before remotes....

Not sure that Cliff Lee wants to be a Yankee,
but at the trade deadline this year, the Yankees thought they had a deal with Seattle
to get Cliff Lee, as I recall he had agreed to go to the Yankees...all the NY sports talk had
it a done deal, then overnight Texas somehow
offered Seattle 'more' than the Yankees & they
got him, at least for this year...but when the season is done, he gets to go wherever he wants, for whatever $$$ he wants...

The CW is that the Yankees do want him in their
lineup, but so does Texas...it remains to be
seen who wins the Lee lottery...will have to see who offers him the most...(kidding, kidding), since just about everyone knows if he wants to be a Yankee, the Yankees will pay him whatever he wants!!....That is just the way
it is in NY....

Carol said...

Coreen, it is nippy up your way. I looked it up and it's cooler where you are than where the game is, according to the weather I looked at.

Coreen said...

Oh & since I don't listen to the TV announcers,
I mute the sound, I listen to the Yankee radio announcers..the only decent announcer on this TV cast is Ron Darling, who was a great Mets pitcher & is the regular NY Mets TV announcer all year....

And yes it may be a wee bit warmer in NYC, but
it is pretty chilly, the radio sports guy was
on all day from the Stadium & he said it was
chilly & breezy, so like I said the fans will be bundled up tonight...

Now are you ready for some baseball...will check in later....

Carol said...

Only problem I will have with watching DWTS later is that the voting is only open for 30 minutes after the show is over so I'll have to depend on Mary to tell me who needs to go. We usually agree.

Carol said...

And I do have the remote all set for the quick switch.

Carol said...

The little I've seen on DWTS, I think all the guys look like they have porked up some. You'd think they would be losing weight instead of gaining it.

Carol said...

Chloe, they have been hinting at those new CPR guidelines for a while now but I guess it is now official and also to include professionals. Start with chest compressions first except when respiratory arrest is the primary cause of cardiac arrest.

Since breathing is the result of changes in the volume and pressure within the chest cavity, chest compression alone will push air out and release with allow it to be sucked back in.

Carol said...

Coreen are you sweating yet? We're down to the wire.

jan said...

I watched DWTs tonight. I think everyone except Bristol was giving it their all. I vote that Bristol should go.

Carol said...

I'm checking out some of DWTS this morning and it was worse than that BB game last night. The critcism given to the stars was all about the choreography and should have been directed to the pros who came up with it not the dancing stars. Much of the choreography did stink and trying to dance to these tv show themes didn't work out either.

I'm surprised Florence didn't get whiplash from that awful jerking action her pro threw in that dance. It's almost like they are trying to jerk her out of the finals. She will be out soon enough anyway but I'm amazed that she has done so well for her age and survived the choreography.

Kyle was dressed to accentuate all his least attractive qualities. That outfit was awful. The criticism directed toward him was, also, about the choreography. The judges didn't point out that their complaints and scores were related to the choreography, not the stars dancing ability. It was totally unfair. I give DWTS an F last night.

And Bristol should be the next to go. I don't think she can get any more animated. Put a bag over her head and paint on a smile.

Coreen said...

Tough night for Yankee fans...but get to do it all over again tonight.... & boy was there a lot of complaining on sports talk after the game, & I'm sure it will continue today....depending on how aj burnett does tonight, it may only get louder...

no idea about any of the DWTS routines...but seems I didn't miss much...

jan said...

"Put a bag over her head and paint on a smile."

Carol, John and I are both LOL at your suggestion. She did better on the 1st night and has gone downhill since. If she is not the one to go, then people are voting for her cuz of her mom.

jan said...

I agree about the music too. We hear or have heard those themes too much already.

jan said...

Someone mentioned that Jennifer Grey is 50. She looks great and is dancing great for 50.

jan said...

Jennifer Grey was also on House last night. She is a better dancer than actress.

jan said...

I too thought Kyle's outfit was bad. His pro's outfit was worse.

jan said...

As for CPR, when I did my reup on CPR a year ago, the focus was on the chest compressions and they are teaching lay people to only do chest compressions - with no breaths - if they are doing one-person CPR. That is for adults only. Infants are still getting breaths and compressions.

jan said...

thanks Chloe for posting the link. That is precisely what I was taught 1 year ago at CPR recertification.

jan said...

Chloe, good article on cancer and mummies. There is good evidence for a genetic link - but that could be due to mutations in the past thousand years or so.

jan said...

I have read that one of the reasons for the change to chest compressions first in adults is that they have found that the cells still contain enough oxygen for life after the heart stops beating, at least for about 3 minutes.

Carol said...

Jan, I'm guessing that they have changed those guidelines for rescue breathing because there was so much fumbling around trying to get an airway and give the breaths that it just took up valuable time.

The rescue breathing often just blows air into the stomach and then you have regurgitation and aspiration. That's both with lay people and pros doing it.

Carol said...

And Coreen, with what I've seen with BB, every game can be a new experience. Can go either way. You pointed out that in the 1996 World Series, the Yanks were two games down and then sweep the rest of the series.

Yes, 1996, a magical year for us...

Tonight looks like it may be a magical mystery tour...AJ is sooo unreliable...he could hit a couple of batters, give up homers, or shut everyone down...just never know...there is not much confidence in him up here...but we will see what we will see...

Last night the Yankees could not get a hit...& that is just not acceptable...& David Robertson
had one of the worst pitching nights of the
year....so who knows...it will be interesting
to say the least...

It is chilly, but no wind...sun even came out
before dark...so weather should be fine at the
Stadium...

As for DWTS, have no idea...but you do know
who will not be leaving....

Carol said...

Coreen, since most of the Yankees have a much better batting avg than what we have seen in these last few games, they're due to make it up tonight. Hope so.

Carol said...

Statistically speaking, that is....

Carol said...

If you go to the link I listed for the judges scores and scan down past where they list the judges scores to the next article, you will find the writer's critique of the dances. I thought whoever wrote it did a good job of describing the dances/dancers.

Carol said...

The top of that first inning was better than usual. Hope that's a good sign.

Mary said...

Well, Bristol and Mark were the first ones safe tonite. I wonder who's going.

Mary said...

Wow, this isn't going as I thought it would at all.

jan said...

I guess by now you all know who went home. We are still "in limbo" here.

Carol said...

We got ripped on DWTS. I hear it went as, maybe, politics seems to be going this year. The least talented in the costumes move on. Not a good omen of what may be to come.

jan said...

Florence is a real professional - very gracious.

jan said...

must be a lot of republicans watching the show and voting last night.

Carol said...

And Jan, if that is the case, it just goes to show ya that they can't recognize lack of talent when they see it or really don't care. Probably both.

Anonymous said...

Carol and Jan,
You both got me thinking more about the changes is CPR, so I looked up the part about the reasoning behind it too. The picture on this one got me thinking more about exactly where to place my hands and about the amount of pressure necessary to be effective. Another article I read said there's so much pressure needed (2 inches in) that sometimes on elderly people, it can break some ribs, but said the ribs can heal, but there's no hope at all if you don't get the oxygen circulating.

Now, compressions should be started immediately on anyone who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.......

Many bystanders balked or panicked about having to perform those preparatory steps. So in recent years, heart groups began recommending that untrained bystanders should simply start hands-only CPR until paramedics arrive or a defibrillator is used to restore a normal heart beat.

The guidelines also take into account the fact that in the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest, victims still have oxygen remaining in their lungs and bloodstream. So starting CPR with chest compressions can pump that blood to the victim's brain and heart sooner.

-- Research has shown that rescuers who started CPR with opening the airway took 30 critical seconds longer to begin chest compressions than rescuers who began CPR with chest compressions."

This is a little different article than the one I linked the other day. I'm not sure that one had as much info. on the reasons for the change. CPR switch: Chest presses first, then breaths

I realize you nurses are experts at this stuff, but it's all pretty new for me.

Anonymous said...

... forgot my starting quote marks on the above

Saw this the other day, and it's not all that surprising, but still good to keep in mind. Especially reminded me of you going up and down those stairs all the time Carol. We have the same thing here, although I probably don't go up and down them in a day as much as you do in a day.

"Stair climbing is one of the best ways to strengthen the glutes and leg muscles, according to the American Council on Exercise. It's a great cardiovascular workout and burns more calories than jogging and walking." Want a low-cost, gym-free exercise? Try climbing stairs

I finally got Emma to the doctor for her flu shot this morning - that was a traumatic experience. Not just the shot either, she freaks out even when they lay her on the baby scale to weigh her.

She definitely does NOT like doctors offices - except for the waiting room. She apparently hasn't made the connection yet. :)

jan said...

Chloe, thanks for the link to new CPR guidelines. I did my recertification a year ago last August - and that sounds very much like what I was taught. The big change that has been introduced also is the use of the defibrillator.

I do a lot of weighing little kids (from newborn to 3) and many of them cry when I weigh them. I don't give any shots or do any invasive procedures and I never wear a white coat or blouse. I give children at least 20 minutes to look me over and I play games with them (needed for developmental assessment) and they still often will cry when I do head and length measurements and weights. It is necessary however. Your Emma reacts normally. I just do these things as quickly as possible.

jan said...

All little kids hate shots. I will never forget my oldest son when I was having to take him and his brother for frequent immunizations as we were moving to a foreign country. They had to have the usual boosters and also smallpox (45 years ago) and cholera and some others I am sure. My oldest was 4 years old. We made our usual trip to the doctor and after we parked the car, he climbed upon the hood of the car (we parked behind a big curb) and said " I'll wait here for you." He was a real little con artist.

jan said...

I have discovered some new shows (new for me) that I like. One is "The Good Wife" and the other is "Glee." I am giving up "Bones" and "Grey's Anatomy" They just don't interest me any more.

Carol said...

Oh yes, giving injections to children was no picnic and supervising students doing it was worse. I'd needed a sedative when that was over.

Carol said...

I got my flu shot last Friday. I'm kinda a big baby when I get an injection also.

jan said...

Carol, good for you. We got our flu shots a couple of weeks ago.

jan said...

Carol, our students give lots of shots here during flu season. They get really good at those shots.

jan said...

Being in a med center really helps in getting students' procedures like shots and starting IV's.

Back to somewhere in Texas...and honestly, I have always hated anything Texas...how I hate
that they have to return there...

Carol said...

Texas is a pretty neat state Coreen. It has very diverse landscape. You've got the piney woods of the east, mountains to the west, coast to the south, hill country in the middle and I ran across some little canyons in the middle of nowhere once driving thru. You just never know what you'll run across in that huge state.

Coreen said...

Carol, drove across Texas way back when...cannot say I was in any way impressed...we came from Arizona/New Mexico traveling east...we passed the stockyards, the brown barren tumbleweed western side, then there was Dallas/Fort Worth a huge city looming out of nowhere, beyond that the lush greenery...but my dislike of Texas is based on the events in Dallas in November, 1963...& all recent Texas notables only reinforces my long-time antipathy to all things Texas...that will never change....

Carol said...

Jan, don't forget one of your favorite shows, Modern Family. It's very funny tonight.

Carol said...

You took the wrong roads Coreen.

Carol said...

Coreen, I suspect that one of the burrs under your saddle right now is that your boys have to go deep in the heart of Texas and win two games, on enemy turf, to move on.

Now I'll quickly duck behind my couch to dodge the daggers that might be headed my way.

Coreen said...

It's a given that I am not happy that they have to return to Texas...but since the alternative would have been worse...they have
to go out & play & win another game...one game
at a time...

"Culture and community can play a role in the personality traits of a group of people, but not geography. Granted, places like New York, Jersey and Boston have reputations for being filled with mean-spirited people with chips on their shoulders, but I'd be willing to bet that has more to do with hard-nosed Yankee tradition and a city of seven million people and 12 cabs than it does with longitude and latitude. Jan, Thanks for the re-assurances regarding Emma. Plus, it's always nice to hear about the work you do.

You too Carol.

The amount of shots they give these babies now is beyond belief. I remember when she was just a few months old, she got four or five on the same visit. She was so upset after that visit, I said to myself: She'll never be the same.

All the stuff she's already been through in her tiny little life - but she'll survive.

The question is, will I?

Coreen said...

Chloe,

Let me assure you that when it comes to sports
New York fans pride themselves on being the most knowledgable of all fans...& often look with disdain at those from other sports cities...

NY Yankee fans are accustomed to hearing at other stadiums the phrase 'yankees suck'...in particluar in Boston...& when it comes to players, it seems that any player that
leaves a team to play in NY is forever greeted
by those losing fans by a chorus of catcalls...
case in point Alex Rodriguez & Mark Texiera....
it seems to be the jealousy that trails the
success of the NY Yankees....though those other
teams always sell out their stadium when the
Yankees come to play...often that does not happen during the regular season....

as to whether New Yorkers beyond sports are more rude than elsewhere...they
have been known to have little patience with
the sickingly sweet, y'all come back & see
us again mentality....that often exemplifies the South...

as for being unrefined...that would simply be
envy rearing its head...& by the way, CT is
often considered a suburb of NYC...but the term
'yankee' does not generally refer to New Yorkers...that is traditionally used to id
New Englanders....

.... of course, you totally missed my point.

I think I remember having a similar discussion here in the past. My mom was from the Chicago area and, as a child, I remember being shocked by some of mom's communcations. It was mainly in social situations. As a child, I just thought it was mom but learned it was also her family and later I learned it was the same with other people who came from up in her geographical area.

I find that people who were raised up in the northeast and north central are far more blunt with their communications. They don't seem to use the same filters we use down in the south. Southerner's seem to worry more about how something sounds and if what we say might hurt someone's feelings even if we have to fib a little not to, ie, no I don't think that outfit makes your ass look huge, wink, wink.

I might have inherited some of mom's bluntness but I still have those southern filters, even though they may be a little late engaging at times. I will play back in my head things I've said during the day or read over things I've written and worry that someone might have misinterpreted my meaning and had their feelings hurt. I do often worry about that.

Chloe, since you were born up north, lived in California, and then migrated to the south, I would be interested in what your experience has been with people from different geographical areas. Your opinion is just as valid as any in the link you posted. I did read your link and many of those writers agreed that people from up north do come across less nice.

My big sis did comment, on one of her visits, that people here were nicer than the people up where she lives. I think she was referring to their being more likely to talk with a stranger.

Solar has also lived in both in the south and north so I'm interested in his take but I don't think guys worry about these kind of things. They aren't that into feelings.

I went up to NYC once and got lost on one of the busy streets downtown. When I slowed down to try to find my way, I was almost run over by most of the people walking behind me but one young lady stopped and asked me if she could help me. She even went out of her way to help direct me to where I needed to go. I was very impressed, thanked her but didn't think to ask her where she was born. I just bet she was born in the south.

Carol said...

Sorry about that. I clicked on post comment and got an error so I did it again. It posted twice.

NBC is reporting a tremendous amount of special interest money flowing into elections. I missed the story because I had paused a program and when I switched channels I lost the entire national news program, dang it.

With the economy the way it is, it's scary that the special interests have so much more to spend. That's where all of our money went. Whoever is the recepient of that money is not who we need to be voting for.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Carol, for trying to iron over things, and I do appreciate what you're trying to do.

But the point I was making is that 'bigotry' comes in all forms. And opinionated, righteous people have made up their mind, and nothing you say is going to change it -- in my opinion. :)

So what does it really matter what I think?

I spent all those years talking at TM, and now, for the life of me, I don't understand why.

Carol said...

It is interesting that there have been situations where people were misunderstood recently. We have to be able to express our feelings. Sometimes our anger is misplaced and we have to understand that also.

The media constantly picks on the south and I guess we have become sensitive. I was hearing Racheal do it last night. People in the south are all thought of as dumb, uneducated and prejudiced. (but nice) We do have our fair share of people who meet that criteria but those people exist everywhere, north, south, east and west. I wonder if Racheal realizes she is offending those of us, who don't meet that criteria, when she goes after the south.

And sometimes we over react to things that are said. Was watching last night about where Juan Williams said he got nervous on a plane when there were a group of Muslim men flying with him. NPR fired him. He was talking on Fox News and what he said was very tame up against what the rest of the people on that channel usually say. Maybe it wasn't politically correct by NPR's standards. It is the season of anger and over reaction. We are all poised to blow these days.

When I heard what Williams said, I was thinking that when I fly, which is not very often and it's been awhile, I look around and if anyone looks like the pics I saw of the guys who crashed those planes, I get nervous also. I probably wouldn't share that on a cable news show.

And Chloe, we shouldn't give up, we should discuss our feelings. We learn alot about ourselves when we do that and that's really what is most important.

Coreen said...

FYI, Chloe, when you use as an example to make a point (whatever your point was supposed to be)....

"But the point I was making is that 'bigotry' comes in all forms. And opinionated, righteous people have made up their mind, and nothing you say is going to change it -- in my opinion. :)"

that is, comments about a 2 year old NY tennis match (NY sports fans) stating that NY fans
were rude, etc, some of us here will respond, since we have heard the nonsense in the past...

Initially I found your insertion of the NY rude post a veiled attempt to respond to my comments that I hate anything Texas, (which is a long standing opinion)...now that I am clear that it was exactly that...by your smiley face comments above...be assured that nothing will change my opinion of all things Texas...

No smoothing over needed from Carol, or anyone else for that matter....

Good morning folks. We are having beautiful fall weather here. It was a long time coming. This is my favorite time of the year. I love the temperatures and the colors of fall. John gets a little depressed about this time because our daylight is is lessening every day. I try to fix him really good health foods to help him get through it.

Sad to say, John's allergies and respiratory problems seem to have almost disappeared since Lobie died. He is back drinking coffee again as he thought caffeine was his problem. I did wake up hearing him "whistling" in his sleep. He has not been using inhalers in about 3 months. What concerned me was that he had a really bad bronchial cough for a year or so. That is what I don't hear any longer. I guess we will see how it goes as the weather changes.

I have an eye appt this morning. We will see if the cataract developing in my left eye calls for surgery. I dread it. I hate any kind of surgery.

jan said...

I don't need cataract surgery yet. I got a good eye report! whoopee.

Carol said...

Jan, I hope you don't have to have surgery. They told me several years ago that I had some cataracts developing. I do notice that driving at night with bright lights coming at me bothers me. I also have trouble seeing when I wear sunglasses but I don't want anyone doing anything with my eyes either.

And I have been feeling tired, depressed and blah for a while and it seemed to start just as Fall got here. Lots of other people around here are complaining of feeling the same way. I'm wondering if it may be related to allergies. There's lot of grass pollin this time of year and we are about 19 inches behind in rainfall. When I remember back, I think I always feel kinda depressed in the Fall even though I look forward to and like the cooler weather.

I'll dare say that the Texas Rangers got a new fan last night. Good old competition can snag us all. LOL. Tell me the truth Chloe, did you watch some of that game last night?

Recently I started listening to sports talk radio when in my vehicle. I like to listen to talk shows on the radio but can't tolerate the political ones so I found a sport's talk show on one of my AM stations. I'm starting to get a tad more knowledgable about sports.

This week I heard that Jeter and one of the other Yankees, didn't catch the name of who, were paid more money than the entire Texas Ranger's team. Last night I thought, I hope that's an omen for politics this year...that money can't always buy a win.

Anonymous said...

LOL Carol, you know me so well. Nope, I didn't watch a minute of it.

Hope you're feeling more up today (I read what you said about feeling down some the time, lately - although I'd never know it by your upbeat posts. The world is really lucky to have you Carol - it's been an honor knowing you.).

I think you're right about the seasons affecting our moods - at least they always have affected mine. I have allergies too, but I've always thought it had more with the angle of the sun and the length of the days, etc. Maybe even things going into hibernation (including some of us?) - I don't know. I just know I feel it (usually a little later in the season than his though), and by the end of winter, I've hit bottom. Spring is always a happy arrival.

May be all psychological with me, like the beginning and the end (season wise, and the way it's compared to the life cycle). That, and the overcast weather (which never bothers me in the spring and summer, since everything's green) along with my severe hate of the cold. Whatever the cause, I know it's real.

Anonymous said...

.... sorry if I've caused any tension here.

I've never been able to just let something go, and I'm not proud of that, either.

jan said...

Coreen,
Sorry your yanks lost. It is clear they and baseball are close to your heart.

Chloe, I too am glad to hear it was the TX Rangers who won. I lived in Arlington, TX for 3 years and went to a few of their games. They are probably the only team I have followed - but not recently.

I loved living in Austin. It is a great part of TX. I was not wild about the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Just too much city for me. I liked Houston. To be a big city, it had a smaller town feel to me. I loved learning to ice skate at the Galleria. I had always wanted to learn to ice skate and Houston provided that opportunity. I had such good times going to school there - with Carol. We had so many great talks and good times during those years.

So I have good feelings about TX.

John and I spent a few days in New York a few years ago when he did a wedding for friends there. We did find the people to be friendly. John has a very thick southern/ Arkansas accent and every time we needed help, we could tell people were listening to us (to him) and they would offer help. We had a great time there. He had several people comment on his accent- in a positive way.

jan said...

Except for Argentina and Montana, I have always lived in the South - or sort of mid-west from Louisiana to New Mexico. Argentina was easy because so many of the North Americans we knew there were from Louisiana and Texas - so it almost felt like home. Montana was the culture shock for me. People are different there. They don't stop and talk to you in the grocery or other places. We often saw license plates there that said - "keep Montana beautiful- shoot an out-of-stater." I took that personally. However, when you had car trouble there - whether it was out on the highway or in town when it snowed - people always stopped to help. I traveled across the state-by car- and had a flat once and my car stalled out twice - and all those times, the first car that came along stopped and helped. People there don't leave you stranded. I will never forget that.

jan said...

I think we all feel closest to the places and areas where we "grow up." I don't live where I grew up, but part of my heart will always be in Oklahoma. Yet, I really don't want to live there any longer. If you drive through OK, you will have to pay to drive on the tollroads. I hate that now and OK is the worst for not keeping the highways in good condition, despite having to pay to drive on them. That is one thing about Texas. TX has the best-kept highways in the south/West.

Carol said...

Sorry we've ganged up on you Coreen but most of us here have lived in Texas and have some fond memories of the place.

Can't say grad school was exactly one of my fondest memories except for the time I got to spend with you Jan. I didn't get to learn to ice skate. My favorite part of Texas is the hill country. My fondest memories are the time I spent camping around and canoeing the Guadaloupe River.

Carol said...

spelled Guadalupe River.

Carol, I guess I must have been pretty self-centered in our MS program. That was one of my adolescent periods. I sort of skipped childhood and adolescence when it should have taken place.

I did not realize it was not a good time for you. It seemed to me you were enjoying it. But I guess we never know what is truly going on inside another person, even when we think we do.

jan said...

Did anybody see the cast of Modern Family on Larry King last night? It was fun to see them all together.

Carol said...

I don't know why you didn't remember that Jan. While you were flitting around ice skating, reading books, enjoying and enriching yourself, I was buried in the books, running here and there, doing all that clinical at the hospital and huffing and puffing. I didn't even have time to go home on the weekends, that is, if I would have had a home to go home to. I gave up my apartment because I didn't have a job, I was living on a tiny monthly stipend that the great state of Texas provided nurses to go to grad school. My home was a storage building.

The vehicle that was still nice that I had paid off just before I started school, was totalled by a little old lady on a weekend when I went home to visit you. I had to replace it, with the little I got for it, with this Rambler that left parts all over the streets of Texas. And someone even rear ended that piece of junk while I was sitting at a red light. You were with me when that happened.

As soon as I got over the whiplash from the wreck and falling on my ass in a slippy gas station where I was running, I developed reactive hypoglycemia. I wasn't used to eating junk food all the time, which is all I had time to grab. The stress probably didn't help. My blood sugar was falling to coma levels. I thought that I was either dying of some horrible brain tumor or bordering on psychosis, until I diagnosed that disorder myself. More time in the medical library.

One fond memory was walking thru the medical center literally drunk from hypoglycemia, barely conscious, I stumbled into the Ben Taub ER, the huge charity hospital there. One look around that ER, I thought I was better off dead and stumbled out. Actually I think there were some dead people in there still waiting to be seen.

One of my episodes of hypoglycemia was so bad, that I couldn't even get off the elevator in my dorm. The entire dorm was spinning so fast that I had to crawl to my room because I couldn't stand up and walk.

I finally made an appointment with some doc and since the appointment wasn't for awhile and I couldn't wait, I just planted myself in his office waiting room until he saw me. He ordered a glucose tolerance test that showed my blood sugar was falling to 20 an hour after I ate.

The only fun I had was living vicariously hearing about your good times. I think I got to hear about those when I was either eating or using the bathroom since that was about the only spare time I had. I did have to start squeezing in the time to eat healthier because of that hypoglycemia.

Is any of this coming back to ya? I bet you had to repress the memory of that.

The Maternal Child program was like a church retreat compared to the Med/Surg program. I resented that and I'm sure I did plenty of bitching about it. I bet you had to repress that also.

Carol said...

Actually it is kinda amusing remembering it even if was hell back then. Time, 30+ years, can turn memories from horror to humor.

Ivy, if you peek in, I see that the rainy season has started up in the PNW, if it ever even took a break this year. I wonder how MGS is coping with being cold and damp all the time. Hi Carol,
I have read the above several times. I have not known how to respond. At first I thought you were really mad at me. I truly did not know you were having such a bad time.

The last time I read it I laughed until tears were running down my face - really! You do write your experiences in a way that one can't help but laugh as you say "at the horror" of what you were going through. I think I can see you sitting there writing the above and laughing your head off. So, I am not laughing at you - but with you.

This last time I read it to John and he thinks it is hilarious. I hope you don't mind.

Anyway, I am going to take it that whatever you may have felt then, you are not mad at me now. I am glad you wrote this all down. It does prove to me that you and I were having completely different experiences out of the entire year or so.

Something you said way back last year - is that we each remember things that the other does not.

Carol said...

I certainly wasn't mad at you Jan, a little jealous, but not mad. I bet being around me back then was very stressful for you. Do you remember any of that now? I think some of it just came back to me this morning. I even repressed it.

jan said...

I am back Carol. I went out to dinner with a community consultant tonight. I am glad you are not mad at me. I don't remember at all being stressed by anything going on with you. I was off in my own world. John tells me that all the time - that I do live in my own world.

I always loved going to school. I liked going to school much better than working. I don't really want to go back to school again. I like working as long as I can have some control over what I do.

Carol said...

Jan, I can't say that I have ever really liked going to school. I am glad I did but I never found it to be enjoyable. It was always stressful.

Carol said...

Is your cat really an alien?? The other night I was listening to C2C and some woman called in to say that she thought her cat was an alien, here to monitor her. It showed up from nowhere and followed her everywhere, even to work and she didn't know how it got out of the house. I can't remember the other clues she shared.

Come to think of it, my Fiddler showed up from nowhere also. Most cats seem to do that and I've had dozens that have over the years. Did any of you, who have kitty friends, actually buy your cats or did they just show up....from nowhere? Maybe she's on to something. LOL

One of the neat things about C2C is that they never make fun of or belittle the people who call in. And we don't really know the real truth anyway. Out of the mouths of nut cases.....

If you remember, I suggested that my PS, porch spider, just might be an alien. That spider just seemed to be smarter than the average spider. The day I mentioned that on the blog, PS disappeared and has never been seen again. Musta beamed back up.

One thing good about the BB outcome is that I can put my full concentration on something really important....DWTS. Will Bristol move her face tonight?

Carol said...

Auburn #1 in the new BCS standings. I wonder what Ivy thinks about that? I guess I'll never know.

Carol said...

Glory be, we got Wasilla flashing on our map! Someone didn't like my Bristol comment. Hope it's not Sarah. Wouldn't want to piss off a mama Grizzly

Carol said...

Len will not give Kyle a break.

Carol said...

Boy they really went after Jennifer tonight. I think the dance was too rough for her orthopedic problems. When he pulled her up by her neck I grimaced.

Carol said...

Didn't like the choreography for Rick's dance and their steps didn't seem to go with the beat of the music. He looked good as usual even if a little too intense.

Carol said...

Bristol looked better than usual tonight.

Carol said...

She is loosening up some.

Carol said...

I think they were extremely tough on Kurt.

Carol said...

Yeah, I'm comfortable talking to myself and the 4 legged one. Had lots of practice.

Carol said...

Was Brandy any good tonight? I got kinda distracted by Max's ass in those pants. By the time I tore my eyes away, the dance was over. Will have to rewind.

Coreen said...

You haven't been deserted yet Carol...just not
much to talk about...what I saw of DWTS seemed
the dance routines did not suit any of them well...

We did go see an Elvis act this weekend...actually the guy was really good...
he was a 'fat Elvis', not the young version...
but he had the 'voice' down pat...wondering
why a singer can't use his own voice though,
but I guess making a living as Elvis...not a bad thing...

Carol said...

If you are a DWTS fan, this Courtney person does a pretty good job summing up the performances.

http://www.puredwts.com/author/courtney/

Carol said...

HI Coreen. Who do you think will be out this week? Since Bristol seems to have a lot of fans, her scores this week might save her for another week. Did you see our Wasilla star?

Carol said...

I really thought Kurt did better than his scores indicated. I thought they were pretty tough on some tonight. They are always too easy on Bristol, scared of mama Grizzly I guess. And I think Jennifer got a little dizzy at the end. She wouldn't comment on it but I watched her performance again and she definitely looked disoriented at the end.

Carol said...

When I was working at this little clinic in a small town down the road, this guy who had an ultrasound business took us to lunch one day. He looked exactly like Elvis. I told him that and come to find out he did do Elvis impersonations. I saw him at one of our casinos one night and he was very good.

Carol said...

And if you do check in Ivy, I don't know if Auburn really deserves that #1. Beating LSU wasn't much of a chore. LSU has just been really, really lucky this year but I think their luck may have finally run out.

And my Drew Brees....he must be suffering a bad case of post partum depression (wife just had a baby) because his performance was really depressing.

jan said...

Just finished watching DWTS. I agree with you Carol. I was impressed with Bristol tonight. She danced very well and seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself. I think Brandy is the one to beat now. She is getting her groove. I think the others were just so-so. I honestly don't know who will leave next week. I bet it will be one of the athletes.

jan said...

Last night went out with some fellow faculty and a consultant to El Pinto, a great restaurant that they take VIP's to when they are in town. It is large hacienda- type place with several large dining rooms. One of my grandsons is a wait-staff there. It was a lot of fun. I had a choking fit however while we were eating chips and salsa. Sometimes the spices in the salsa stimulate some spasms in my trachea - or something like that. When that happens, I panic cause I can only get a little air coming through. I got up and rushed out and just try to relax so the spasms will stop. Usually some water will help. The tears start running too. I don't know if anyone else has that problem. Probably should stop eating salsa. It scares the s*** out of me.

jan said...

Good night all.

Read back over DWTS. I meant "don't know who will leave tomorrow"

Carol said...

Jan, those chips often do that to me also. I think it's the combination of the excited anticipation of chomping into those first chips and the spices.

The chips are always my favorite part of the dinner and there's usually not much room for food after. It's weird but the same chips and salsa, at home, don't taste as good.

Carol said...

Watching some of the past favorites at the beginning of DWTS last night reminded me that I really haven't been watching that show for very long. That was during my obsessed with the news era. Back then I wouldn't have been caught dead watching this kind of program. Now I don't want to be caught dead watching the news. Hmmm.

Carol said...

There sure have been a lot of serious injuries in football lately. What gives? The Dallas QB, Tony Romo, had his clavicle broken last night.

Carol said...

Doesn't exactly account for the blood sucking Coreen. Sometimes we're better off with the mystery. And I'm a little behind in my C2C programs. I'm sleeping more than I used to.

It feels like summer outside but we are going to get a little cooler weather later this week.

Reading about DWTS this evening, it seems that no one was very impressed with last nights show. It's anyone's guess who is going to get the boot tonight. Some think it will be Kurt or Kyle. I still think Kyle is a good performer and better dancer than many of them. And I still think his weight is one of the things that goes against him.

Carol said...

And they think that Bristol's improved dancing last night and her fan base will save her for another week.

Carol said...

Dang, I think I'm ready to boot DWTS. The two on the bottom are both safe.

Carol said...

"Heart" brings back good memories.

Carol said...

It appeared to me that Derek was aggravated with Jennifer's performance. He's not used to getting low scores.

jan said...

We don't get DWTS for another hour.

I am taping Glee - too. I enjoy that show.

Went swimming this evening. Just got home. I think I will change my schedule now and swim later in afternoon/evening. It feels good to do something different. While swimming, I can see the mountains. At 6:30 or so the sun was setting and the mountains were pink. What a sight. I swim on my side and back and do the kickboard so I can watch what is going on around me. I was wishing I had the camera, but did not. It looked like a painting.

Also saw a couple of former students at the pool. One is a diabetes educator. She came into the nurs program with a BS and MS in nutrition/dietetics. She was an older student. She likes her job but has added responsibilities as the hosp she works for (UNM hosp) has let an educator go to save money.

Carol said...

That sounds absolutely devine Jan. And I bet it will really help you sleep well tonight.

Carol said...

Not going to be good.

Carol said...

This is not a dance competition, it's a popularity contest. But I'm glad it wasn't who I liked but who I thought was going to get the boot tonight.

The only thing I can say about the one who got the boot tonight is that this person didn't have the ego that the others had. The person was attractive, had the talent but was a little more subdued in the passion department. Of course that doesn't explain why Bristol made it. She didn't have any of the above. There's no good explanation for her success.

Carol said...

Bristol must have a pretty big fan base out there because of her mama. It's the only thing that explains it. I'm thinking that you might want to start practicing...President Pa... President Pa... Nope I can't even say it.

Carol said...

You know how your dog gets excited when you come home, even when you haven't been gone long. They get excited when you feed them, even when it's the same old thing day after day. They are excited to go outside to potty, well I do get that way when I have to go bad and get there in time.

Have you ever thought that you would like to trade places with your dog for a day or two, just to feel excited about the simple things in life?

jan said...

That was the thing about Lobie too. No matter how things were going, she was always excited and happy to see you when you came home. Talk about unconditional love. That goes for your cat too - huh Coreen!

I too think DWTS is a popularity contest. Each couple has to develop a fan base. I think Audrena was one of the best dancers. She did lack that "it" thing that Kyle has. I think the little conflict between Macks and Brandy helped them. I guess the 2 male athletes have their fans. They are not very good dancers. I too think that it is Palin's fans that keep Bristol there. She did do much better this week.

Another Day, Another Dollar! My dad used to say that. I heard a song with that theme the other day.

I am off to read my book - "The Help! " Its written in the voice of some Black women who were maids for white women in Mississippi in the 60's. The author is White and grew up in Miss. in that time period. It is a good book. I am having a hard time putting it down to go to sleep. The Help are the Black maids.

I recommend it.

Good night.

Carol said...

Jan, I don't think that cats display the same emotions that dogs do. It's just not the same.

That book you are reading does sound very interesting.

I'm late, have to run.

Carol said...

Jan, I saw on the weather that is was going to get pretty cold over your way tonight, 27 degrees. Is that correct? I hope that pool you're swimming in is heated.

We're going to dip down into the 40s tomorrow night. I'm kinda looking forward to it being a little cooler. It's felt like summer lately.

jan said...

It is pretty cold here. We are wearing sweat clothing in the house. We just turned on our heat - on occasion. We have a plumber coming next week to be sure the gas furnace is is good shape. So we are just running it to take the chill off. We are not running it at night.

I love this weather though. It is great weather for walking.

Yes, the pool is heated. I am not sure of the temp, but it is chilly when I first get in but after a couple of laps it feels great.
