Our best friends

Time for a new post so I was going through my photos and found some pictures of my good friend Carl and his best friends. I met Carl through Lobie. As one can plainly see, Carl loves dogs. Carl does landscaping work for UNM and when Lobie and I walked on campus together we were always running into Carl who always had some treats for Lobie. A few weeks ago Carl brought his canine friends by on their way to the river where his dogs love to play. These are some photos I took that day.

It was getting time for a new post, so I took the opportunity. I don't want to "hog" all the new posts - so anyone, please feel free to do another post.

jan said...

Yes, that is me in the first picture. Isn't it interesting how the last picture chosen when posting pictures always turns out to be the 1st one in the new post. Hmmmmm.

Carol said...

Great Jan. I love it and we did need a new post. I had no ideas.

I just wrote this on the last post before I saw that you had a new one up.

Morning, I just woke up from my early nap. I went out again after midnight and again at about 5a. I only saw one more meteor. I didn't have a view of the entire sky because of my trees. It was mostly just the north and east sky.

I read that the meteor shower was better for days before the peak and then it falls off significantly after the peak. Just my luck. Since thoses were work days, I couldn't be outside all night then.

Even though I didn't see except a couple of meteors, I found that being out alone in the dark, quiet, under all those beautiful stars was a pretty spiritual experience. I could even see the reflection of the stars in the river. It was pretty mesmerizing and I'm glad I did it.

I've been seeing alot on TV about that EPL movie. I could never do something like that lady did and don't think I would even want to but I do think that moving out to my camp was version of it and it has worked for me. I get plenty of the eating and praying in but, as for the loving......I love my Maggie and all the other critters out here.

Carol said...

Now as for my big sis, she does that kind of thing all the time but not for a year. She takes these nice long trips, by herself, to places all over the globe. I'm sure she does a lot of the eating and praying also but if she found any loving, she didn't share that. Big sis is a wanderer.

Carol said...

I do think we each have to find our own version of the EPL experience and it doesn't have to involve leaving your life and job and going around the world.

Carol said...

Ivy, since you are reading the book, could you give us what you think the point is of the story. I'm not sure if I know what point she is trying to make is...if she is trying to make one.

Carol said...

Maybe her point was to make lots of money with a book and movie.

Ivy, you mentioned you had a version of the EPL experience. Actually, I'd be more interested in hearing more about that one than Ms Gilbert's story. Don't make us wait for the book.

Carol said...

I hope Chloe's working on her own experience right now. Nothing wrong with bringing your husband and kid with you.

jan said...

I started the EPL book several months ago, and lost interest in it. If I remember my thoughts It seemed as if it was going to be a religious book.

I don't know the point of the book either. Ivy, please enlighten us.

jan said...

I wonder if we know we are having an EPL experience when we are having it. could it be that we become award of having had one later - or maybe later in life???

jan said...

Chloe, I miss you. I hope you are hanging out but staying in touch with us.

Ivy Green said...

Nice photos, Jan. You don't look very much different than you did in that 1970 photo! Thank you...

Carl is wearing my hat!! I bought one in the same style in Estes Park. Mine is adorned with a string of glued-on turquoise beads. I attached a faux scrimshaw angel pin in honor of Meg-Angel.

The faux angel wears a sky-blue colored covering. I might be able to find a link to the artist's site where I got it...the artist's work is another of my "collections" starting with one piece of hers I found in a little shop in Cape May New Jersey almost 20 years ago.

Ivy Green said...

Google this to find the angel -

Angel wings sky goddess guardian blue dress Moosup pin

Moosup Valley Designs - artist's name is Rachel Badeau...got to be a good old Cajun or French Canadian name...

jan said...

Ivy, Thank you. How fun that Carl is wearing your hat. He is out in the sun most of the day, so he needs a hat. In the winter he is quite fair -skinned. I looked at some of Rachel's pins - beautiful. How sweet to put an angel pin on your hat to honor Meg-Angel.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I meant to say not just that you still look like you did in 1970, but that you are as pretty now as you were then. lol

Ivy Green said...

I wore my hat out-and-about today. Unsurprisingly, Western-style hats are common in Colorado. But they are not seen so often in-and-around Mountain Brook, Alabama. I couldn't quite tell if I was drawing admiring glances, or what-the-hail-is-she-got-on-? looks. Either way, I love my new hat!

Carol said...

"I wonder if we know we are having an EPL experience when we are having it. could it be that we become aware of having had one later - or maybe later in life???"

Even though we may have elements of those experiences throughout life, IMO, in order to qualify for a EPL experience, it would need to be a quest, an intentional seeking. (disclaimer: I haven't a clue what I'm talking about, but that has never stopped me before)

If I heard correctly, didn't that author go after that experience after she ended a significant relationship in her life?? Not sure. If so, what she was probably after was just a way to cope with her serious loss/grief and she came up with a new cutsy new concept. Some people buy new furniture or a new car or a entire new wardrobe. To each her own.

Carol said...

Ivy, I tried to google your angel but all I got was ebay stuff.

And who cares what people were looking at you for....they were looking!

Ivy Green said...

I can't speak to the movie, EPL, which seems to be drawing mostly negative reviews due, at least in part, to the lackluster performance of Julia Roberts. I have not been a fan of hers in the past, and that probably won't change. They're saying the movie was miscast with her in the lead. It may be the point of the book is lost by the distraction of her over-hyped presence.

Most of the reviewers confess to not having read the book. Even I have not yet "left Italy." But even a few chapters of reading are enough to reveal what eludes the movie-only critics...that it's not just about a spoiled girl on a well-financed lark. In her memoir, Ms. Gilbert reveals her encroaching descent into depression and mental illness. Mental illness often defies a rational explanation. It just IS, regardless whether one determines the root cause or not. Her short chapter describing being "stalked" by the twin goons of Depression and Loneliness is amazing, and how she pulled herself out of their grip is alone enough rationale for the book.

It's a story of how one woman saved her sanity and her soul by embarking on a spiritual journey, and by not allowing herself to be re-routed by psychiatrists or therapists into an easier way by reliance on mind-altering, dependency-inducing anti-depressants. These work for many, but was not the route for her. She was afraid of drugs damaging her brain and rendering her incapable of writing, her livelihood.

Even in "real life" I 'spose one can fault her for financing the trip by publisher's advance money. All that really speaks to is the confidence someone had in her skills as a writer.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
It is on eBay.

Hi everyone!
That sounds like a good book Ivy - and I've read that the movie did not catch the magic of the book.

Ivy Green said...

MGS decided she was too busy this weekend to go to the movies. Tomorrow is her last day home. Or, I should say, before she travels to her new home on the West Coast. So I will have to postpone my trip to the movies, maybe to next week with my girlfriends, or maybe I will sneak into a matinee all by myself. That's okay. It will give me a chance to finish reading the book. That way, I can sit back and take better informed pot-shots at the scripting of the movie.

In the meantime, I'm very busy collecting yarn and accessories, and practicing my new knitting skills. My Mom e-mails new patterns and tips every day. If I'd known this was the route to a closer relationship with her, I'd have taken it up a long time ago.

Ivy Green said...

Hey, Chloe! Didn't see you sneak in here! Good to hear from you...!

Another friendly, warm, caring post - I loved seeing the pics of your best friends and you! You are lovely Jan, and do not look like you are in your 60s. You are young and energetic - and such a wonderful presence here - you complete us :) (.... I know that saying may sound corny, and is over used, but it says it all) I appreciate your posts so much. :) .

I've just been busy prioritizing my life, while trying to keep up with a beautiful 18 month old baby - and believe me, by the end of every day, I feel like I've run a marathon.

Glad to see everyone's do welling, and has been gabby. I actually think this place runs a lot better without me.... all kidding aside. I enjoyed reading the conversation.

It was 101 when I drove home late this afternoon, and all I could think is: I love this weather. I must clarify again, that's because I'm always being cooled by an AC, wherever I go.

Air Conditioning is a religion in this town.

Anonymous said...

Glad to see you back too Ivy. I felt so bad about your loss, and it's always hard to know what to say to someone who's been through what you and hubs just went through. I'm glad that you've found a meaningful way to deal with it.

Anonymous said...

Before I go (must rest up for the Sunday Marathon), there's this: "You and Sally might pose a problem...but I know how to handle you both...wanna know??"

I know exactly what you'd do Solar -- you try to stuff us full of pizza!
But it wouldn't work, because we're the ones that know how to handle you. You must have forgotten, I know you better than you think - that makes it easier to stay one step ahead of you! Ha!

Carol said...

Chloe, if AC is a religion, that makes you and your Hubs the ministers.

Is that a new pic of the Emster? She is growing up fast. And I bet moving even faster. I don't know how you do it, keeping up with her that is.

Anonymous said...

.... oh, and I meant to mention up above, when discussing the heat, that 101 or not, I've been busy planning Emma's winter wardrobe, and it's such fun. I do a lot of it online. I'm sure you all realize that these kids are 'constantly' growing out of their clothes - I'd forgotten what a job it is (and their feet grow especially fast). She's still pretty tiny for her age, but does graduate to new sizes often enough. It's so much fun shopping for her and dressing her.

Wondering when Miss College graduate is going off the school Ivy. It must be soon. (?)

Anonymous said...

That pic was just taken a few days ago Carol, in our kitchen.

And yep, the AC guy rules, in this town, when the hot weather arrives. We're busy makin' hay, while the sun shines (and it's shining nice and bright this year). 'Bout time!

Ivy Green said...

Thanks for the kind words, Chloe. I thought I might be doing a lot worse by now, but actually I feel okay. I ran into one of the veterinary assistants in the grocery store. She was so sympathetic about Meg and, as it happened, had lost her own dog two days before Meg. The vet had also lost her cat days before. Meg's loss was #3 in a row for the clinic, as it turned out, and almost "too much" for this young lady, she shared. We often get focused on our own losses and fail to realize how others may be equally pained by what we think is ours alone. I found myself trying to be of comfort to her.

I was reminded that Meg once had a dislocated hip, but couldn't have the usual surgical repair because of her low platelet count. So the clinic just wrapped her leg up from paw to hip, and sent her on her way. The staff nicknamed her "Peg Leg Meg." We thought it was so cute, we kept it even after her dislocation eventually healed on its own.

Carol said...

If God intended us older folkes to keep up with those younguns, he wouldn't have invented meno-PAUSE.

Ivy Green said...

Chloe,
MGS leaves for Portland early on Monday.

Carol said...

Ivy, I love hearing your stories about Meg. Please do share them with us.

Carol said...

Ivy, are any of MGS's friends also going to Portland or is she going alone? And does she have any friends up there?

Anonymous said...

"We often get focused on our own losses and fail to realize how others may be equally pained by what we think is ours alone."

Isn't that the truth Ivy.

That's a lot of loss in a short amount of time for your vet. It's good that you two could connect like that, and in that way, help each other to cope with the loss. I don't deal well at all with losing a pet, and I can honestly say that I know what you're going through. I'm glad you're doing OK working your way through it.

Anonymous said...

Yes Carol - didn't realize how much effect that 'pause' part would have on me.

Anonymous said...

Monday?
You mean day after tomorrow?
Wow Ivy, that is soon. How's that going for all of you? Is her excitement making it easier to deal with?

Anonymous said...

... I wish you could post that article you posted a long while back on the 'WOW' factor Ivy. Do you remember it? It was so beautifully written - so meaningful. If you still have it, I'd love to see it again.

Carol said...

Rotten Tomatoes gives EPL 38% so far. Not good. "Consensus: The scenery is nice to look at, and Julia Roberts is as luminous as ever, but without the spiritual and emotional weight of the book that inspired it, Eat Pray Love is too shallow to resonate."

Carol said...

Dann Gire writes: "If only this movie could have stopped at "Eat."

Carol said...

Definitely will be a renter, if that.

Carol said...

I saw Julie Roberts on something today talking like she was begging people to go see the movie. She mentioned that there were some nice looking men in it and that she was going to be wearing a bathing suit...like that would be worth the price of the ticket. Think again sister.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
That "Rotten" quote may best say what I was clumsily trying to say...

...Julia Roberts' luminosity has always escaped me. I only ever liked one movie she starred in, the unfortunately-named and wrongly-billed "Step-Mom" - because Susan Sarandon was the true star of that movie and she never got the credit or kudos she deserved because of over-hyping the luminous Julia.

Oh, I stand corrected. I liked her as Tinkerbell in "Hook," the Robin Williams version of Peter Pan. But that was a teeny-tiny role, and Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman were not about to be overshadowed. lol

jan said...

Ivy & Chloe, thank you both for your kind words about the post. All I can think of to say is, "aw shucks"

Chloe, so glad to see you here. I meant earlier to comment on Emma's picture. She is a little doll. I know it must be fun to shop for clothes for her. I am sure she looks adorable in anything she wears. Is she showing a preference for certain colors or styles or types of clothes. I didn't have girls but my granddaughters have all had very specific tastes in their clothing.

jan said...

Ivy, after "hearing" your description of EPL, I want to give it another try.

I too thought I would have a harder time with Lobie's death. I did for about 2-3 weeks. The hardest times were those routines we had with her, like the walks and coming home and she would meet us at the door. Her following me around the house. I think it has been harder on John than me.

Carol said...

I think Julia R looks like she's all mouth. Kinda like Larry King's wife and Imus's wife. They smile and their teeth blind ya.

jan said...

Ivy, How nice that you and your mom can share your new-found knitting activity. Several of the women I know here have recently started to knit. There are some beautiful yarns and so many beautiful things to make.

jan said...

Carol, I am curious, how is your new roomie coming with your t-shirt quilt? Has she mentioned it lately?

Carol said...

It would probably make it even harder, if there's such a thing as any harder when you lose a baby girl, to lose one who required such intense care. So much of your daily life is wrapped up in that routine of managing her diabetes and in monitoring her behavior for signs of her blood sugar being too high or too low. Then all of a sudden that routine is gone.

Carol said...

That quilt has been done Jan. It was her first one and she did it with the sewing machine. I've had it for weeks now. Too hot to use it. It will come in handy if Winter ever gets here. Now I'm not looking forward to Winter but a little Fall would be more than nice.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Mom and I are helping each other make new discoveries in knitting...me, just learning and relearning the basic skill, and getting tips from her that are not in any books; she, taking on untried projects, such as those involving felting wool. She never did that before.... but we all have plenty of crocheted afghans...

Ivy Green said...

By the way, Jan, those are the sweetest carload of dogs ever...they look like all from the same litter...

Ivy Green said...

I am wracking my brain trying to recall the "WOW" factor...

Ivy Green said...

My EPL insights notwithstanding, there are gaping moments of shallowness in even the book version of the memoir. That's really what I meant by my snarkiness the other day that I "could write something similar." It's not that hard to be awed by a Swami.

Carol said...

Don't tell Solar, Ivy.

Carol said...

I'd still rather hear your tale Ivy. Then I don't have to see Julia Roberts in her bathing suit.

jan said...

I will have to ask Carl if his "babies" are from same litter.

jan said...

Carol, your roomie much faster than me on that sewing machine. I am sure she is much younger too. Of course, I make everything into a bigger job than needed.

Carol said...

Jan, the dude in your post reminds me of my neighbor guy. He has at least 5 dogs over there and some of them look alike. People wonder how I can live next to all those dogs but they are alright. They don't always bark but they will if something strange is in the area. I just think of them as my security system. When they bark, I know something is out there. Usually it's a possum or another dog or.... I do think they discourage strangers from coming around snooping.

I did have a brand new boat battery that went missing once. I was real surprised that someone would come into my area and steal a battery with my security system out there. I mentioned that to my neighbor and he said, "oh, I borrowed that". He needed it for his boat. He did finally bring it back, about a year later, when my other boat battery died and I had to have it back.

jan said...

not sure why but Julia is not as interesting an actress to me as she used to be. I too liked Susan S. more in Step Mom. Julia seems to only play the one type of character.

jan said...

Carol, interesting thing about your neighbor. Wonder if when he told you he borrowed it if he suspected you knew it was him.

jan said...

I liked that about Lobie that she would let us know when someone was around but the past year she was not doing that so much. I think her senses were not as acute.

Carol said...

I'm not sure Jan. There is sorta a philosophy around here and that is....if you have more than someone else does and they need it, it's alright to borrow it. No need to ask.

jan said...

Carol, I think that is a great philosophy. When you said something to him about your battery, did you think he might have borrowed it?

jan said...

So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. --Molly Ivins

Too bad about the perseids Carol, but guess

As far as the EPL saga...

"Maybe her point was to make lots of money with a book and movie." Bingo!!...but then
that's what everyone wants isn't it, write a bestseller, become famous, have a movie deal...

the author was given an advance so she could travel the world, well at least the 3 I's to write the story & I suspect that the hoopla came after Oprah went gaga (& no not Lady) over it for her show & book choice...

jan said...

I will send both links to John. Yes, I am sure he will like them. I read a little of both - will go back and read more. The first one is an interesting study. when I go out for my walks in nature I don't often think of "God" at the time. My walks are accompanied by thoughts of what is going on in my life at the time and then I am usually distracted by seeing something specific in nature - maybe a bird or a new flower blooming I have not seen before - I don't have any preconceived notion of what I will think about or notice - ideas or thoughts simply occur spontaneously. the result is that when I finish my walk I feel more calm and at peace. To me, that is God.

I think many people with different political views liked reading Molly. I first learned about her column from a man I dated in TX who was one of the most politically and socially conservative people I have know. "Today is a beautiful day. As was yesterday, as was mentioned by Carol. My family had a nice weekend together - a rare event with our busy scattered lives. Wasn't much to it except a trip to Wal-Mart, and dinner at a restaurant where the food and the service sucked, but it didn't matter because we laughed the whole time. Now it's quiet here again as we all return to our normal business.

I took a peek into one of my daily readers, still searching under the topic of humility and found a perfect one...

" 'Wow!' That word expresses such wonder, excitement, surprise, and humility. It's a word I use often, yet I pay little attention to its meaning or power. For example, this morning when I awoke, the sun was shining brightly, the sky was a deep and cloudless blue, and the [winter] trees radiated gold [and silver]...Without thinking about it, my first reaction was 'Wow!'
I was struck by the fact I had noting to do with creating such a beautiful morning. That meant I probably had no effect on the rainy or snowy mornings either. In fact, weather was one of the many things completely out of my control...My job was simply to enjoy the morning and be grateful for the experience of beauty. The day was off to a great start.
Now I Take more notice of the 'wow' moments in my life. I acknowledge my feelings, such as the gratitude, joy, and humility, that come with appreciating something I didn't affect or create...I don't have to work hard for this day's delights because they are a gift from my Higher Power. All I need to do is pay attention and enjoy my honest emotions as the day progresses.""

And thanks Carol for linking that article on synchronized behavior in clouds, and self-organization in nature.

While reading it, I was struck by how much I try to fit things into my already formed belief system, as I'm thinking through things. I had a very clear insight into something I already knew - but it became so much more clear when I caught myself doing it. I like to think of myself as being open minded, but caught myself judging the information in the article according to what I already believe.

Talking about this reminds me of what one of the characters in a program (Electric Company) that Emma enjoys so much, (because there's a lot of humor, dancing and music in it) said the other day. When accused of being gullible, he said 'I'm not gullible!! I'm just open minded!.

EBC book/movie deal...maybe...but the River Rats reality series may still be a good bet...

Jan, whether those who watch Oprah like &/or
agree with her views...she has managed to get
lots of people to do what she says...like read
the books she pushes...you may not like them
in the end, but her recommending them meant something to you & you took the time to read
what she suggested...she has used the power of
persuasion very effectively & most profitably over the years...but remember, I am not an Oprah fan, just don't get her shtick at all....

Pretty sure that 'fat' does not apply to anyone here...except maybe in each of our own
eyes...

And since it is still the weekend I should not
bring up my less than liberal view concerning the potential for building a mosque near ground zero (which in the end instinct tells me will not happen)...a little addressed fact in the dustup....they need financing to purchase the 2nd bldg from Con Ed & to actually build the thing...the suggested $100 million...currently they own 1 bldg & have a very long term lease w/option to buy from Con Ed with which they are negotiating a purchase price...

but since the President chose to put his foot in his mouth within 24 hours...first appearing to pander to his muslim dinner attendees by infering that he was in full support of them building it there, then flipping in a nano second to spin it to he was not offering support for the 'wisdom' of building it there...give me a break....does he really think
we are all village idiots...

as for me, I stand with those that feel that it is ill advised (in the least) to place it in such close proximity to that place that muslim terrorists chose to attack the U.S....

And as to the left wing liberals offering their so very politically correct support to the mosque proponents....a perfect example of
why I could not or ever want to call myself
a liberal....

but it is Sunday, so I'll let it be...

"Is she showing a preference for certain colors or styles or types of clothes."

She's not old enough yet to care much about what she wears, Jan. I'm sure that will change in the not to distant future though. She does have favorite colors, and one of the first we noticed (when she was only a few months old) was orange. She also likes certain cartoon characters pictures on her clothes - Dora the explorer, Mini Mouse, and more.... along with pictures of animals (like all toddlers seem to like).

.... thanks for mentioning her.

This is a for on rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law, which such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.

.....a sort of intoxicated joy and amazement at the beauty and grandeur of this world......which we only have just a faint notion......this joy is the feeling from which true scientific research draws its spiritual sustenance, but which also seem to find expression in the song of birds.....it that cosmic feeling that I always talk about when I say that we are all part of it all, the earth the universe the stars...we are all star dust..so in all of nature.......

By Golly I think we -GOT -IT........your are it...i am it, it, is it, we are all it, and that is that :-))))

Religions are divisive and quarrelsome. They are a form of one-upmanship b/c they depend on separating the "saved" from the Damned" the true believers from the heretics, the in-group from the out-group.

Even religious liberals play the game of "we are more tolerant-than-you." religion is a system of doctrine, symbolism, and behavior, religions harden into institutions that must command loyalty, be defended and kept "pure"

And b/c all belief is fervent hope, and therefore a cover-up for doubt and uncertainty-religions must make converts...........

HI Sally,

Sunday, where is the apple for my Hoss?

When I'm outside, appreciating nature, I see nature as a manifestation of God. It is God. We are all God. Life is God. IMHO.

Solar said...

Coreen,

Again I have to agree with you.! I don't really care where they build a new church ( mosque ) but it is kinda dumb and looking for trouble by wanting to build it at ground zero...

It is just a way for them to flex tier religious muscles...not their brains.....they should have come out and said that they would not build one at ground zero, but one close to it.....so that all of the families would not be offended, and that they could also be tolerant of a mosque outside, but close to ground zero....they lost mu slims in the explosion also......

I think that this would have gone a long, long way.....others would have been tolerant, or seen.........intolerant no?

It was my son Tom's B. Day the 13th our lucky #
I called him late on the 12th, wanted to know if he wanted to go and watch the star show by the lake..would pick him up at I am....

He said that he was already seeing stars....of another kind..and that we would do it the next time...he would not make any plans.

I think that he was on a 48 hr date.......yep he was seeing stars alright, HA.!!

Carol said...

In defense of Obama and you won't hear me do that often, at the Muslim dinner he said that they had a right to do what they wanted with their property. That is in the constitution.
The government should not interfere with that. The next day, down in the intolerant south, he said....but I didn't say it was a good idea. Both are correct and he works the crowd...

BTW, did they already own or lease that property before 911?? If not, then it does look like it is a defiant act with a purpose.

It does point out further hypocracy of the GOP. They love to defend the constitution....only when it serves their purpose.

Carol said...

And the public should continue to express their displeasure with the idea if that is how they feel. If that displeasure is overwhelmingly expressed and the group continues their efforts...then it is more likely that it is a defiant act.

Carol said...

And as far as nature communicating with us...they have been. Our environment has been screaming at us lately and even though some of us are listening, we aren't doing enough about it. But when it comes to a showdown, they will win!

jan said...

Solar, when it comes to spiritual things - we are on the same page.

jan said...

Solar, I don'r mean to say we are not on same page in other things as well. I am responding to what you said above.

Jan,

Did I call U a klutz?....II do remember that you said that you were a little accident prone no? I would never call U klutzi...hahahaaaaa

Carol said...

Jan, I went and rented that movie "Chloe". I saw that it was a thriller and I do love thrillers if they don't get too gross.

Maggie and I had to hit a couple of Redboxes to find it in. Luckily we have 3 of them 5 miles or less from where I am.

Carol said...

Temp here....100.4 with a heat index of 113. ACs are huffing and puffing and I'm cool....

Coreen said...

Again, Obama at the muslim dinner in prepared
remarks emphatically suggested, inferred, implied that he was wholeheartedly behind
the proposed mosque to be constructed some 2 blocks from the WTC....

the next morning, he backtracked claiming his initial remarks were not to suggest that the proponents should build it near ground zero...the attempt to rap it in a religious freedom under the Constitution is
just deflection, once the gravity of his words 'hit the fan'....

The fact remains that there is a tone-deafness,
insensitivity (whatever you want to call it) by
those self-righteously claiming that it is
'their' right to do this...reasonably sure that those opposed have never said that the owners do not have the 'right' to build it, rather that it is again ill advised, 'intolerant' indeed of the proponents, based upon the legacy of what ground zero had come to mean to those who
lost people there, to propose building a mosque at that location...

As far as the history of the subject property,
it consists of 2 buildings, 45-47 Park Place, an empty building purchased in 2009 by Soho properties (Sharif El-Gamal & his brother) for $4.8 million & they paid an additional
$700,000 to take over the existing 99 yr lease
with Con Edison which owns the ajoining/connected 49-51 Park Place bldg. The lease with an option to buy expires
in 2071.

According to Con Ed, El-Gamal advised the utility in February, that he wanted to exercise the buy option. Currently the property is being appraised to determine value, at which time El-Gamal would have to decide whether to accept the price...estimates
are between $10-$20 million for that bldg.

What is the true intent of the proponents of
building the mosque, I have no idea, but the
controversy has been brewing for months, (at least to those in the NYC area)
that Obama 'offered' his initial remarks at the muslim dinner was base politics...that backfired...watching/listening to the remarks
only reinforces my opinion that he should have
stayed out of it...

It will play out in NYC....and I will not be surprised if the construction never actually
goes ahead.....By the way, initially, the proponents stated that they wanted to open the
mosque on the 10 year anniversary of 911...but
again to date, they do not have the est. $100
million needed to complete this fiasco....

I don't think they are trying to win friends and influence people Coreen.

And speaking of communicating with the clouds, I was just outside seeing if I could organize a little cooling thunderstorm. Nothing too serious, just a little cool down.

Rut rho Jan, the doctor on "Chloe" didn't use gloves to clean that bloody wound on that hooker's leg?? A big faux pas. I don't they exactly needed to do much research to figure that one out.

Carol,i'm sure you been enjoying your beautiful pool this year, hope it hasn't worked you too much..OMG,my dinner is decadent, wings with Ranch and Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce with Chicken Pasta Salad along with a big glass of Chocolate Almond milk...Sooo good...

Ivy,
Sorry about your loss!

Hi Chloe,Jan,Coreen and that SOLARMAN..

Oops,Chloe,
Little Emma is beautiful, hope you can take time out for yourself every now and then...

Carol said...

Hi Tony, glad you dropped in. Your dinner does sound wonderful. Still can't find your Almond milk here.

I haven't lifted a finger on my pool, someone else is keeping it up. I really haven't had time to swim in it lately either. It's at the house and I'm at the camp. And it's too hot to spend much time outside, even in a pool. The water was already 92 back in June.

Carol said...

Jan, that movie was very disturbing. It took me all afternoon to watch it. I couldn't watch it straight thru. I had to stop to talk to the clouds, that never came thru for me and to play with my hummingbirds. I think there was a moral to that story... one is, don't set your husband up with a hooker.

Unknown said...

Carol,
Yep,time is precious! I have mine of course right out the 8ft slider.I use the cooling function on Solar heater plus the enclosure keeps it cooler anyways.Pool temp is a nice 86..Blue Diamond Almond Milk is everywhere here, strange?Glad your busy...I keep meaning to drop by here all the time but seems there isn't enough hours in the day..

Carol said...

Tony, I saw that you really like your Iphone. Do you have any problems with dropped calls? I have the Iphone 3 and every now and again it drops calls. It's been better lately.

Carol said...

I have been hankering for an Iphone 4 but I can't justify getting one, yet. Also, waiting for them to work out the kinks.

Carol said...

Anyone accidentally caught Tosh.O on Comedy Central? I did, accidentally, while waiting for the Daily Show. Now I actually watch it occasionally, especially when I'm in that mood...the goofy one. It's totally immature, gross and often, also, hysterical. Sometimes I'm also in that kind of mood.

jan said...

Hi Tony, Hope you will drop in more often.

Carol, I wrote you an e-mail about the movie. I didn't want to mess it up for someone who might want to see the movie.

We have Blue Diamond Almond milk here at Smith/Kroger store. I bought it once but have gotten used to drinking soy milk which I like now. It is great for me as I discovered I do have some lactose intolerance. I can handle about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of milk or ice cream but no more. So I leave cow's milk and products alone now.

jan said...

I saw the I phone 4 at the Apple store the other day. If 2 people have that phone and have wifi too, they can see each other as they talk. I want one of those - but will probably be a couple of years for me.

jan said...

Chloe, We went to Sweet Tomatoes tonight, burp. It was so good. Have not been there in about a month. I do get my weeks supply of veggies when I go there - but I pick up a lot of extra calories too as I love the bread and desserts too.

Carol said...

Jan, you can buy that lactose free milk. I only drink milk in coffee but I get the lactose free stuff. Breyers also has a natural vanilla ice cream, that is lactose free. It's really good.

Carol said...

The more I hear about this Islamic Center controversy, the more it appears to be an Muslim activist movement. More of an excuse to incite hatred. When will it ever end? And you're right, Obama should have stayed way the hell out of it. He doesn't need any more poop.

Carol said...

It's after 9p and it's still over 90 degrees outside.

Ivy Green said...

Thank you, Tony, for stopping by, and for your kind words, much appreciated.

Chloe,
I was really drawing a blank on that "WOW" post, but it all came back after I re-read it. I can't believe you located that so quickly, or that you even remembered it!

I like the soymilk in my cereal and tea (in place of cows milk). I like the taste of it. I eat yoghurt every day too, so I don't miss milk. I am not taking any calcium supplements as I get plenty of calcium in my diet.

jan said...

I eat frozen yoghurt instead of ice cream but only about once/week. I am trying to stay away from the sweet stuff now. I did have a little cherry cobbler at dinner tonight. You can't cut all the good stuff out.

Carol said...

Jan, I've been eating that Activia yogart for the last three weeks or so. I had to take those antibiotics a while back for that tooth infection and I want all my good bacteria back. I got the vanilla. It does taste creamy and good. I don't know what that challange is all about but it's good.

I've been dosing my food like I would my vitamins lately, a dose of yogart, a dose of cantaloupe, a dose of green tea, a couple of doses of leafy greens, etc. I want the real thing.
