Who, who, in the hell are you?

Yesterday, a baby owl, that I have been anticipating seeing for a month, fell out of it's tree. Every Spring my barred owls make a nest in the huge Cypress tree. I wait each year, around April, for the babies to come out and sun on the branch right outside their nesting hole.

Yesterday morning, I saw mama owl up in the tree. I know she's been up there working on something but it wasn't easy to catch her. She has been sneaking in and out. She probably didn't think I have noticed. I looked over by the nesting hole and, sure enough, I caught a little glimace of a baby owl. My trees have grown so much that it is difficult for me to see the area by the owl nest, from my viewing perch. All day, mama owl was sitting up in the tree. I figured she was keeping her eye on a baby or babies, on their first trip outside there nesting hole.

In the afternoon, while I was watering my plants I heard something fall out of the owl tree. I looked and it was one of the owl babies. I have watched those babies every year, this time, for 4 years now and never knew of one to fall from the tree. Mom was still up on one of the branches but she didn't seem disturbed. I didn't know anyone to call for help but remembered my secretary's husband works for animal control. I called her. She gave me the name of a lady who has a wildlife rehab center in our town. I called her.

She told me that the best thing to do was to find a basket, to put the baby in, and hoist it up in a tree. The best bet for that baby was to let the mama owl fledge it.
I looked all over outside and couldn't find anything like that around. Then I went in the house and found a magazine basket stuffed with the throws I use on the couch. I emptied it and took it outside. I found one of my boat ropes and attached it to the basket. Now it was time to go get baby. What will mama do? I noticed she wasn't around. I got some of my heavy duty work gloves on and went and picked up the baby. It was light as a feather, pardon the pun. Big beak, big feet, attached to a large cotton ball. It looked at me as if to say, who, who, in the hell are you?

I put baby in the basket and then looked for a tree with a branch that I could throw the rope up over. I found a tree but it wasn't the owl tree. The owl tree is too tall and has no low branches. The tree I found was close by.

I attached a large screwdriver to the end of the rope and tried to pitch it up to a branch. I couldn't throw when I was young, and that saying, you're not getting older, you're getting better, didn't turn out so well for me. It took about 10 tries to get it up over a branch. I hoisted the basket up and tied it off.

After a short while, baby climbed up on the edge of the basket. It looked quite at home there. Mama came over and lit on a branch, a ways up, above the basket. I never saw her go over to the basket and I don't know if she will. Only time will tell. Anyone interested in our discussion of little Vertigo can check the comments on the last blog post.
I turned on the porch light this morning and little Vertigo is looking right at me. It's standing on the edge of it's basket. I don't know if mama fed it during the night and I have to go to work this morning. The expression on little Vertigo's face seems to yell, you saved me, you own me. It is still dark out there so I could be wrong...

Everyone, keep good thoughts for our little Vertigo. There is power in numbers.

I will try to call my neighbor friend later this morning. He might be able to keep his eye on the little owl. He told me that, years ago, he rescued a large owl from a limb line it was caught on. He rehabed it and set it free.

I needed him yesterday but he was away from home, helping another friend. He should be back today.

Jan, I'm so sorry to hear about John's fall yesterday. You need to check with his doctor. I don't often hear of anyone having a syncopal episode while exercising. Maybe he needs some of his meds adjusted. He might even need to wear a Holter monitor while he exercises to see what his heart rate is doing. Maybe even a stress test to see what his Bp and heart rate is doing while he exercises.

Carol said...

Jan, does John see a cardiologist? If not, maybe he needs to. Just ruling out a heart attack is not enough.

Anonymous said...

I'm not caught up on the last thread, and need to go back to see what happened with John,

Carol, reg. this one, was glad to see you filled us in this morning. I just have to say that you 'never' own a wild animal, it's important to remember that.

I've learned from past experience, that the more you hang around the baby, the more unlikely it may be that the mama will come around.

That said, it's a wonderful thing you're doing here, helping this little life named Vertigo survive. My hopes are with you.

I betcha she fed that baby plenty last night, and is looking over her.

Just checking in. I have been in the ER Or they now call it ED - since about 5 this afternoon. John was at the YMCA on the eliptical and fainted, fell off and gashed the back of his head. They called the paramedics who took him to ER - YMCA called me at work. He is ok. We just got home. I have him in bed now. He was not drinking enough water. He does now have 8 staples in the back of his head. They ruled out heart attack. "

Oh Jan, what a day you two had. I'm so glad to hear that John is doing OK (and hope your are too). Has he ever fainted before? I ask because my daughter will faint under 'extreme' stress. I don't know much about it, but it seems like it may be the bodies way of protecting himself.

Did the doctors give an opinion? Sorry for all the questions, mainly just want to say that hope everything is fine. Please let us know how he's doing (as well as how you're doing).

Chloe, if that owl would have fallen when I wasn't standing right there, I wouldn't have even known about it. It landed in a place where it was well cammouflaged from my view.

I think if I wasn't meant to try to intervene, it would have happened when I wasn't looking.

Anonymous said...

I agree Carol. That's why I said the owl it lucky that you were off work yesterday. If you hadn't been there to raise Vertigo off the ground, then she probably wouldn't have made it through the night.

I always do the same thing when a baby bird falls, try to get them high enough in a tree to keep predators away from them. Just have a little faith now, and do what you can do. It's ultimately up to her mama.

Carol said...

Well, not a good sign. I went outside and baby was hopping around on the ground. I took the basket down, no easy chore, and put him back in it and tied it back up. It's not his nest and he knows it.

Carol said...

Now, I'm late for work.

Carol said...

I'm gonna have a big line of owls, at the joint, waiting for my help.

... you know,it really gets hard to communicate in writing, without have what you say misunderstood. I'm starting to wonder if it's worth all the effort.

Carol, I can't tell you how many times I've been through what you're going through right now out here on my little plot of wilderness. I've taken baby squirrels, birds and other wild life into Houston into the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation center countless times since I've lived here. I've had a huge number of feral or abandoned cats spayed and neutered and then found homes for close to a hundred.

I respect your dedication to helping everyone around you so much. All I was saying is that try to not let the babies mama see you hanging around too much. You said the neighbor was going to be checking too, and I thought that too many people hanging around the baby may spook the mother.

I wasn't criticizing anything you've done, and you've done all the right things. I 'never' said you weren't meant to intervene - never.

Mary said...

Chloe,
It didn't sound like you were criticizing anything Carol did yesterday. I kinow what you mean about communicating in writing though because I have a hard time doing that. That's why I don't comment much.
I don't know if you saw my comment yesterday. I said I loved your post and the pictures of Miss Em. She is so cute. Are you going to put the pictures in your photo bucket.
I also said that I have been off work since last Friday morning but I go back tonight. So far I like nights.

jan said...

Carol, your owl pics are truly amazing. I am going to go back and read your story of the owls.

John is doing well. They did 2 EKGs last night and a chest X-ray and I am sure some blood tests. The docs said his heart checked out ok. They felt it was dehydration and overexertion that caused him to faint. He said he was real dizzy just before he fainted. However, he sees his regular doc in a couple of weeks and I want them to do a cardiac workup. I was more worried last night about a head injury as he really did bang up his head. He is up and around this morning with no dizziness. He fixed his breakfast (we each fix our own). I need to clean his wound with soap and water and put some bacitracin on it in a bit. I will stay home with him today and be sure he is ok.

His nurse last night was one of my former students. It was so good to see her. She and the others took really good care of him. One of the neatest things about being a nursing teacher is that I often run into former students.

jan said...

Carol, I just read your owl story. Wow, I will keep little vertigo and mama owl in my thoughts and animal prayers.

Chloe, You are also an amazing naturalist "found homes for almost a hundred." You have been busy.

Just another story about John - Last August he had his first fainting spell. We had been to Santa Fe on the train and when we got back to Alb we had a flat tire. He tried to change it himself (although my son was on his way to change it) and John fainted in the process. Turns out he had not been drinking any water all day b/c it was hard to find places to pee (this always worries him) and b/c of a festival in Santa Fe, there were long lines to the bathrooms. That was our first venture to the ED - They looked up his files last night at the ED and warned him that it is dangerous to get so dehydrated. The only meds he takes are his statins for Cholesterol and he uses an inhaler for his asthma. He does take an antihistamine daily (Zyrtec). Allergies here are terrible. He does not have hypertension and has not had any cardiac problems before. He has lost about 20 lbs in the past 6-8 months (purposefully).

"she is 94 but sharp as a tack"
Solar, how wonderful you still have your mom around and she is "sharp" too. Had he lived my dad would have been 94 this year - Was your mom born in 1915? My dad died at age 90 - and I felt so fortunate to have him around that long.

jan said...

Coreen, thanks for posting the link "tree child" what an amazing story about the baby owl. I would love to know how that turned out.

jan said...

Carol, I await more news of little vertigo.

jan said...

Mary, so good to hear from you. I bet you have some stories you could tell about "nights on the job." I remember when I worked nights there was always more "drama" in the hospital, no matter which floor, than on days. Probably one of the big reasons I could not adjust to nights was b/c I would did swing shifts - nights a few shifts and days a few shifts. I don't think one ever adjusts to that kind of schedule.

jan said...

"would did" now what kind of sense does that make - LOL

jan said...

I have to share the below from an -e-mail someone sent John. I share this b/c Willie Nelson is one of my all time favorite musicians. I also share this b/c when I talk to my sis and other women friends, this is one of the biggest concerns of the men in our lives.

"Whether or not you are a country music fan, these are truly the words of a deep thinker, and a highly intelligent person. So simple, yet so profound! Read the words of wisdom from that famous philosopher Willie Nelson, iconic country and western singer, on his 75th birthday.Only a man with such wisdom and maturity could be so concise and succinct in phrasing his feelings at this turning point in his life."

"I have outlived my pecker".

jan said...

Solar, I hope the above is not offensive to you - or to any of the women in "the Swamp"

jan said...

"these are truly the words of a deep thinker, and a highly intelligent person."

Maybe this is stretching it a bit.

Thanks Mary.
Glad to hear that you had some time off, and hopefully adjusting to the schedule of working nights. I did miss your post on the last thread, and appreciate the update. Now that you mention it, I will end up putting the pics on my PhotoBucket. Hope you return to an easy shift at work tonight. Also, please let us know anytime you get information about your grand baby to be.

Jan, I'm so glad to hear that John is doing better, and that you're staying home with him today. It's so dangerous to let yourself get dehydrated - encourage him to drink a lot of water and other liquids. He sound so healthy, and losing that weight that he lost is always a good thing.

Those animals I found homes for was over a period of 25 years, and I've slowed down so much lately, that it's rare. Can only do so many things at a time, and my priorities have shifted since Emma was born - and it's been a good thing. Everyone here knows how overwhelming it can be when you worry about too many things, and my focus lately has been to narrow it down to the things over which I have some control.

Anonymous said...

LOL Jan.
You could 'never' offend anyone. I like Willie Nelson a lot too.

... OK, out and about.

Carol said...

Came home for lunch, franically searched for V. No sight of him. Thought I saw mom. Then
looked again and spotted his little
fuzzy butt high in the tree.

Carol said...

Better chance of mom feeding him there.

jan said...

Carol, sounds like great news about "little fuzzy butt" I just hope that his falling out of the tree was an accident and not his mom rejecting him for some reason.

jan said...

Chloe, thanks for your kind words. John is a healthy guy. We both are getting up in years though and have to be more careful. He is 5 years my senior. He has been a competitive swimmer most of his life and so has exercised regularly. His big problem is that he wants to work out at the same level as when he was younger. His losing wt was a good thing - both of us have let our wt climb over the years. He is more successful than I at losing those xtra lbs. Takes me longer to lose but I am better at keeping it off.

Mary said...

Jan,
I'm glad that John is doing better but like Carol said, just to be on the safe side, he should probably have a cardiac w/u done. It would probably make you both feel better.

Mary said...

Coreen,
I loved that "Tree Child" story you posted yesterday. I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. It was so cute.

jan said...

I just watched our taping of DWTS. Did any of you watch it last night? John's favorite is Ochocinco. We both like him. His children were there last night and were so excited for him. I thought Neicy did so well - I cried during her performance. I thought the best dances were from Evan (the skater) and the Pussycat doll. She is a amazing. I thought the judges were too critical of her - but gave her good scores anyway. I felt so bad for Kate. Watching her was painful. She needs some counseling - her pain shows up in her face and all her movements.

Mary said...

Jan, Who is Ochocinco? I watched DWTS last night. That's one show I don't miss. Poor Kate needs to be voted off. She is competing with too many people who are much better. You can tell that the Pussycat Doll has had alot of dancing before. Kate's as stiff as Buzz is and he has quite a few yrs. on her.

Mary said...

I am going to have to get some kind of recording device because on Tues. both DWTS and American Idol are on at the same time.

Carol said...

Jan, I think Kate's pain is because she is so out of her league. But that just MHO.

Lil V is still up in the tree. I came home and first thing, I looked for the baby. It's like playing that game find the hidden object in this picture. I scan the entire tree and finally see this big pair of eyes, on a cotton ball, looking back at me. I sure hope mama is feeding him. I assume it is a him because it's been my experience that little boys do seem to be more vulnerable when they are babies. A little developmentally delayed also. May just be my experience.

I haven't seen mama yet. I will keep a watch. The mama and papa owls have been so elusive this season. I don't think they want me to see them come and go. I don't see any other baby owls up in the original owl tree. I kind of hope this is her only baby so she will try harder to keep him alive.

The baby makes the weirdest clucking noise. It's very windy outside today. Not as much of a wind break where V is now compared to where the owl nest hole was but there are a lot more leaves on this tree.

jan said...

Mary, Ochocinco is the African American guy. I think he is a sports figure. On the 1st show he said he got his name by looking down at the number on his jersey - ocho is 8 and cinco is 9 in spanish - # 89. At least that is what I heard.

jan said...

Although I have heard of the show "Jon and Kate plus 8, you can't miss Kate's pic on all of the entertainment magazines at the grocery. She was complaining last night about all the papparize and how they bother her - well duh, she has a reality show -If not for the papparzi putting out all the pics and info about her, she would not have any following - what is wrong with these people???

Carol said...

Jan, nueve is nice. Cinco is five in Spanish. Must be 85.

Coreen said...

Glad to hear that John is ok, Jan...am sure
it was quite a scare for both of you...

And seems there is some hopeful news from owl central this evening...

Carol, if anyone can help this little guy..if mama owl doesn't, I know it is you...hope he is getting fed and remains safe up in the tree....

Coreen said...

Pretty sure that Ocho Cinco is a wide receiver (football) for the Bengals...his jersey # is 85...

DWTS...Kate really needs to go now...how she
managed to stay another week is beyond me....
she offers nothing to the mix....

The best two are still Evan Licichek? (the ice skating olympic gold medalist)& Nicole ? the black pony-tailed woman (no idea what her claim to fame is) but she is an excellent dancer....

Mary, I had to keep reading the Tree Child story too....but was worried it wouldn't have a
happy ending...but it did....

I can almost see you Carol, somehow raising
little V, but hoping it won't be needed & his
mama takes over soon...

Mary said...

Coreen,
Nicole is the lead singer for the Pussycat Dolls.

Carol said...

Coreen, baby is up in the tree and unless he falls out again, I can't get to him. Now he
is very close to the river so if he comes down again, it won't be good.

I too hope mama can do the job because I can't bring baby to the joint to feed him. I'm praying hard for his survival and I did get him back up to a tree twice.

Baby was facing the river when I got home but since then he's turned around so he can keep an eye on me. I can't see him unless I get under the tree. I try to stay away so as not to scare away mama.

Coreen said...

Thanks, Mary, I have no clue who the Pussycat
Dolls are/were, or what if any songs they had
were hits....but she is a really good dancer...
& having Derek as a partner is a plus, he is
very talented...

Do the pros choreograph the dance routines, for some reason I think they do, but not sure...

Carol said...

And Chloe, I knew exactly what you were trying to do this morning. You were trying to keep me from feeling guilty if little V doesn't make it. I won't feel guilt but I will feel very sad. We bonded. I think he thinks I'm Aunt Carol.

I saw your post this morning but couldn't respond from work. I'm glad Mary did.

Carol said...

Does anyone think that Kate will be voted off tonight? I don't. She'll probably win.

Carol said...

I'll be happy to be wrong. About Kate winning, that is, nothing else.

jan said...

Duh - cinco is 5 - I knew that. I am a little slap happy today.

jan said...

Derek is my favorite male pro. He is a great dancer - but he must also be a great teacher. All of the stars that dance with him do very well. I think he sort of seduces them. But I think he is a gentler-kinder teacher too. I think some the pros are a little harsh with their protegees

Carol said...

Who is Derek with this season Jan?

jan said...

Carol, Interesting about baby V. Do you think he is watching you. Maybe he thinks you are his mother. I sure his mother is feeding him.

jan said...

Carol, I love your pics of little Baby V. His eyes just reach into my soul.

jan said...

I meant to say - I sure hope his mother is feeding him.

Carol said...

I know Jan, little V stole my heart. Those owls do look into your soul.

Carol said...

In that first pic, it kind of looks like he is asking, what do we do now?

Carol said...

And I was thinking the very same thing.

Carol said...

Jan, when does you DWTS start?

jan said...

Derek is dancing with Nicole of the Pussycat Dolls. She is a doll too. what a dancer. When they dance, it is hard to tell who the pro is.

jan said...

I went back and blew up the pic of little V and that is when I noticed his eyes.

jan said...

Your pictures are simply amazing Carol. I especially like to blow up the one of little V on the edge of basket in the tree. The details in the pic blow me away - the moss and how the tree and little V are the same color and pattern and the green in the leaves. It makes me wish I could paint.

Carol said...

Jan, I had to stand on the wharf and look up in the tree today to try to find little V. I looked and looked then I finally located him. He had his little head cocked down looking right down at me. I hurried up and moved so he wouldn't lose his balance and fall down again. I bet yesterday was his first day out of his hole and he just didn't have his branch legs yet.

Carol said...

Isn't it interesting how babies are always so cute. It doesn't really matter what species, they are all cute. Well, maybe not a baby possum.

Carol said...

The first two pics were done on Iphony. I didn't have time to go get my camera. It was a 911. The third one, I did use a little zoom on my camera. That will sometimes make it a little fuzzy..but so is the baby. LOL.

jan said...

Help, our DVR screwed up and we did not see who got kicked off DWTS.

jan said...

It is interesting- why do we love babies of most species. They attract us.

Carol said...

It was Buzz. Guess who was safe....yes, Kate was safe. It was between Buzz and the Bachelor.

Carol said...

jan said...

Carol Thanks. I will catch it on ABC.

jan said...

Yes, absolutely.

jan said...

I tried ABC and couldn't find tonights results.

jan said...

jan said...

I have been going over Idol stuff online and on youtube. I would buy an album by Crystal Bowersox now. She absolutely blows me away. I am not the least bit ambivalent about who my favorite is - she is it.

jan said...

Carol, I did find DWTS stuff online. It took a little while for it to get there.

Your iphoney takes some damn good pictures.

I have had a bunch of comments that have not been recorded. Don't know what happened. Lets see what happened here. I am doing crap with technology tonight.

jan said...

Interesting, now they are there. There is a ghost in my computer.

Carol said...

Has Tina Fey had some kind of work done on her face? When I see her now, I don't recognize her. She doesn't look the same. I was thinking that she spent so much time trying to look like Palin that when she looks like herself, I don't recognize her.

Carol said...

Ivy are you OK? They didn't do you in at PT yesterday, did they?

How bout the hummers? Anything yet? My friend from town called and said she had about 6 yesterday. She kept telling me she has nada also. The azeleas are in full bloom here now. That offers some food now, huh?

Yesterday, I made the mistake of thinking I could appeal to that pregnant girl's conscious. The one who has been playing us for all she is worth. The one who helped ruin my holiday. The one who probably has cost us close to $50,000 in a couple of weeks. Her goal is to get out of jail before her baby is born. She is trying to punish everyone because she is in jail. Didn't work. They called me again last night.

Carol said...

Congrats Coreen on your Yanks last night. Surprised you didn't mention it.

Carol said...

Jan, it's not just you with the technology. It happens to all of us. Even the machines like to screw with us.

Carol said...

And I meant to say, I tried to appeal to that lady's conscience, not conscious. Well, maybe both.

Anonymous said...

Hi Jan, In case you didn't find the complete DWTS online ABC that Carol mentioned, this is the link to them for you to bookmark: Dancing with the Stars - watch full episodes

That disappearance and reappearance of comments has happened to me here a few times now. It drives me batty sometimes. The problem is that no one notices except the one it's happening too, so it's hard to explain how confusing it is - especially when they're not having the same problem.

Anonymous said...

Coreen, Just saw Carol's comment - I was going to ask you how your game went. Congrats from me too!

Carol, Have you spotted fuzzy butt yet this morning?

Carol said...

Weird, Coreen, you Ivy and me all have 81 degrees listed as the high today. 79 for you Chloe. Not so warm for Jan and Solar.

Carol said...

No Chloe, too dark out there still. I have heard this, puppy dog whinning, sound that comes from mom, out there since last night. It's in the tree with baby. Don't know what it means but I assumed before it is a, bring me some food, sound. I haven't seen papa owl in a while.

I also haven't seen any other babies up in the owl tree. I think maybe this is the only baby. It might be that this is a new mama.

Coreen said...

Hey early birds...do you guys get up before it is light?

Yes, another great day for early April...

Hoping for more good news about little v...

The DWTS results...makes me wonder just who votes...

Thanks for noticing my Yanks did win last night
though Sunday night they lost...Yankee/Boston games are like a marathon...4 hours & rarely an easy win for either team...It's a long season, 160 games to go...just glad they are
back...

Chloe, I have an AC question. When I get these wall units and turn on AC, I hear this water slushing sound. They don't drain the water they pull out of the air. When they come on, it sounds like a wave machine. With the older AC, I climbed a ladder and stuck a nail to push the rubber up to let the water out. I was afraid it would start shooting water back in the house.

Now it is the same with this new little AC. Yesterday, I went outside and pushed something in under the rubber piece over a hole on the underside of it and it poured water out. Now the sound is gone. Why is that rubber piece there?

Someone, last year said it was suppose to have all that water in it. What gives?

Carol said...

Well, hi ho, hi ho.....

Anonymous said...

Had hubby read your question, and I told him I think you have a wall or window unit. (?)

He said if that's what you have, they're supposed to be installed a slight angle(down toward the outside) for the water to drain. If it's too level, then as long as it's draining free of the house, you can probably just make a hole in the rubber part to help it drain out from under the rubber you're talking about (where you say you're pushing on it, and water rushes out).

But before you do that (and if it is too level) make sure the water that's draining isn't coming back toward the house (or you'll have water coming inside the wall).

That rubber you're talking about is actually just a seal, and the drain should be a U shaped cut in the metal on the back of your unit .(which is why you slant it slightly for it to drain). Also, if it's too level, it may be be keeping some of the water in there, and there will be a swishing noise when you start it.

Can you see the visual of what I'm saying? I'm looking at a little window unit we have on an outside animal room we have, and the back of the unit on the outside of the house is angled down, to make sure it drains properly. Does yours look like that from the outside?

Anonymous said...

Yay! I think that may mean that her mama is feeding her - wouldn't it? It doesn't seem like she'd last this long without it. (?)

Your whole approach to the owl has been ingenious. Maybe he would have been okay on his own, or maybe wouldn't, but the fact is you were there for him. And we get to enjoy the wonderful pictures. Maybe the bird rescue place can put your pictures and story on their website, if they have one?

Hey who U calling ugly.!! During the day of the dinosaurs, down to about 65 mill years agoi, all the mammals on earth were little creatures looking much like rats and mice. ...actually they were mostly marsupials like our opossum...and we come (our primitive lines) from a tree climbing shrews...they the shrews branched off into many different mammals, one of them was the monkeys that had a larger brain....but u r right....a opossum baby is not at all pretty...

BBV was there at lunch and again when I got home today. He was a little lower in the tree at lunch time and higher, like yesterday, this afternoon. While looking for him, I startled mom out of the tree. Shucks. She was probably feeding him.

BBV=branch baby V. Coreen's article talked about the month and a half they spend on the branch. BBV had just started branch school when he took the plunge. He's well into Branch 101 now.

My neighbor, who was out of town the day I needed him, was back today and came by while I was home for lunch. I pointed out BBV because he wasn't doing so well in the, find the hidden object in this tree, game.

I called him to tell him what happened yesterday and to tell him that, he picked a fine time to leave me Louise. He was off doing a good deed for another friend who had surgery. He's already had experience rescuing a big owl from a fish line. Probably one of BBV's ancestors.

He said earlier this morning he saw mama owl getting into it with a squirrel in BBV's tree. You know I mentioned that he said that a squirrel and mama owl seemed to be sharing the same nesting hole and there have been some confrontations before. Neither one damaged in the process. I'm now starting to wonder if it weren't one of those socio-squirrels that pushed BBV from his tree branch Monday. Could be. You've heard that saying that something sounds a little squirrely? Yep, it sure does.

Carol said...

And Ivy, I'm quite sure BBV would never have made it on the ground. Too many preditors. Too close to the river and I don't think he's has swimming lessons yet.

I'm not positive he will make it now, up in the tree, but he has a much better chance. I'm starting to feel a lot better about his chances now. I can see my boy has grown since yesterday.

Carol said...

Thanks Chloe and hubby for the AC info. The units are tilted but just don't drain unless I stick something to push that piece of rubber up. Then out comes a flood. I can't believe that that slushing sound is normal. I don't see anywhere else for water to drain. I've had a nail in the old AC and yesterday I stuck a plastic fork, it's what I had handy at the moment, in the new one. Just one of the tines. It certainly can't need all that water in it to do it's job, huh?

Very positive news about little v, Carol...that

By the way, just about all of CT broke records for heat today...it was 90 on the bank's clock/temp at my office at 4 p.m. & my car said 92.....

Official #s are 88, 89 today....summer just dropped in...but it should be back to normal in a day or two...

And Ivy, I wrenched my wrest yesterday just trying to get the basket with BBV up in the tree. Can you imagine me trying to get a hammock with SF in it???

We're supposed to get a rain today/tonight. Maybe. Hope it's not a bad one or accompanied with high winds. It's been pretty windy for the last two day already. Kind of quiet out there right now though.

So the tv show will downsize their goals....

Harsh reality for 'extreme
makeover' homes in foreclosure

Carol said...

Did these people go mortgage their makeover homes for money, spend it and now can't pay it back? If that is the case then they needed an extreme brain makeover. Maybe they can do another, related, reality show, Extreme Brain Makeover.

It seems like when you give someone something that they don't have to work to get, they don't apprecicate it and waste it. It happens in so many areas of helping people out. We need to learn that when we give someone something, they need to do something to earn it. It could even be keep the litter out of their neighborhood. Adopt a street. Clean a park. Something.

I just finished planting my container cucumbers, tomatoes and already planted my bell pepper last weekend. My lettuce is coming to the end of it's season. It lasted all thru the Winter and may have a week or so left. Lettuce can't take any heat so I can't get the whole salad at the same time.

Carol said...

Just spotted mama owl fly in with resources. Can't see the activity since there are too many leaves and branches in my way. Where they are is a little more at my eye level, where I sit on the couch.

I'm pretty sure this is the only baby mama has. Maybe the squirrels had something to do with that also.

Coreen said...

Back with my 'big salad'...speaking of which,
that Seinfeld episode was on last night....after the Yankees game....& tonite's
game just started.....

Carol, am thinking about trying to grow tomatoes in a container, on the back deck, since it is hopeless to plant a garden,
critters eat everything, the last season I tired, someone gnawed the tomato stalks (killed all 6 of them) just when they were full of green tomatoes...they
even chomped on the green tomatoes...

How big a container do you use & what kind of tomatoes...I like big boys, girls, better boys,
& beefsteak...in the garden they get pretty
tall, so I wiuld need good size containers....and here can't plant any until
maybe May 15 earliest or Memorial day....

Coreen, I use large Wally World planting containers. The secret is feeding often enough. Last year was my best year for container tomatoes. I feed a slightly dilute Miracle Grow, 6 out of 7 days a week and the 7th day I flushed built up nutrients. Read that on a ag site.

I have a friend who grows lots of Celebrity tomatoes. She loves that model. I can get all the regular tomatoes I want from her.

I like grape tomatoes. I have three grape tomato plants. That will give me more than enough. One of my tomatoes is in that Topsy Turvy planter. I had good luck with it last year.

My bell pepper plant from last year didn't die until the hard freeze. I have a lot of chopped up bell pepper in the freezer to cook with.

I had a container with about 6 cucs planted in it last year and had enough to eat and to give away. I plant the burpless variety. I planted it next to the swing holder and let it grow up it.

Were your tomato plants young when something ate thru their stems? That might have been a cut worm. If that is the problem, use a plastic cup around the base when you plant. Don't know what would eat green tomatoes.
Those horn worms will eat the leaves. If you don't catch them fast, they will strip the plant. Birds like to eat them.

Carol said...

Solar, have you been streaking, naked in the woods again?

From today's Daily Word

"Healing

Vitality radiates through every cell of my body.

Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, affirmed, "I am a child of God. Therefore, I do not inherit sickness." Using this affirmation, she overcame tuberculosis. I, too, am a child of God, and I do not inherit sickness. Nor do I inherit self-doubt, lack or negativity. What I do inherit are strength, wisdom, hope and vitality.

During my daily time in the silence, I become aware of the vital physical sensation of each part of my body, beginning with my head and spreading to my toes. To each individual organ, limb and cell, I affirm, "I am well. The spirit of love, light and healing flows through me." I am blessed by this knowing and by the prayers of those who affirm health and wholeness for me."

Thank you for your container-vegetable feeding tip. I forget to feed them and mostly rely on watering. Feeding is necessary for container plants. I have my containers on little wheeled-things so I can roll them in-and-out of the sun. Sunlight is a spotty thing here, either too much or too little. Only reason I haven't signed up for C-Bob's blue corn seeds. Unless C-Bob wants to have "certain failure" among his statistics. lol

Who wants to guess at who gets voted off American Idol tonite? My least favorite last night was Lee DeWyze singing "Hey Jude" I missed him singing last night so I had to watch it online but it sure didn't sound good online. My favorites were Crystal B. and Katie Stevens.

Ivy Green said...

Off to see who gets the hook on Idol.

Loved the diggereedoo guy last night who played with Bobbie-sox. Also, kinda irritated they made fun of the bagpiper who came on with Lee. He was cool, and yesterday was, after all, Tartan Day. Nobody noted that. It commemorates the Declaration of Arbroath, the model for our own Declaration of Independence. The Scots were the first to stand up and spit in the eye of British oppression.

Ivy Green said...

I think Big Mike is the surprise bottom dweller, and the judges will use the save if that is the case...oops, I need to shut up now in case Jan is visiting...

Jan, I hope John continues to improve. That sounded kinda scary.

Ivy,

Yes in Mexico....Papa= government....Mama = Church..and they are very old school....but all of the people know what is going on...they just cling to things...I meant with all of the news about the Pope and all...has been known for ages, and covered up over there also...

I passed that one also...I told him that the only rock was Jesus and there the church was to be built on....like a foundation to a house...he was the foundation...why he died, for all, even for me...and we were to build on it....the last part he told me...we did not argue once...much to my moms disappointment.....she like it lively.....but we did not agree about the times, the mission of Jesus...he does not feel intimidated by any ones point of view...and it showed....was a very good day...my mom use the bathroom that was just for her, and did not insist on going home too early....

Carol said...

The answer please Solar.

Ivy Green said...

When I step outside, mama owl in very close by, seems like only a few feet from my face but I can't see her in the dark. I don't want to disturb her.

A surprise on Idol. I was not impressed with Big Mike last night but did not think he would be voted off so soon.

Hi Ivy, did not come on and look into the swamp until I had seen recap of Idol online. Our DVR box chose tonight to go out. I had taped Idol as had to be away from home. I was having a "hissy fit" when I came home and Idol was not on the DVR.

Mary, interesting how we all see and hear differently. I liked Lee. He is my favorite guy. I think he has a special sound/quality to his voice that really stands out. My favorite overall is still Chrystal Bowersox.

jan said...

Well, we will have to make a trip to Comcast to get a new DVR Box. They have to be changed out every couple of years. I love that box, cause I don't like being tied to the TV to get my favorite shows.

jan said...

Carol, keep letting us know about the owl and little fuzzy butt.

Ivy, How exciting that must have been when your little humming bird came so close to you today. sorry to hear about all your pollen. We had a lot of that in Little Rock. We don't have so much of that here -that you can see. In the summer and fall we do get a lot of cottony stuff from the cottonwood trees.

jan said...

"Ellen D.'s joke about the "guy who got separated from his parade" was lol"

Ivy, I loved that comment Ellen made too. I think she is a great addition to the judges.

I too liked the bag piper. I was a little surprised when he appeared though. It did sort of detract from Lee's singing - but hey - it was good entertainment.

Campaign finance reform is the only thing we can do to fix this rotten mess.

Interesting that they have Ratigan's program on at 3p CT. That is probably when most people are the busiest with all their activities, work, picking up kids, etc. You have to record him to see him. Then you're too busy to watch the recording later.

I've been recording that Discovery "Life" wildlife series that comes on Sunday nights. Oprah narrates it. Last night, when I woke up in the middle of the night, I watched some of the Bird's episode. There is this bird, I didn't catch it's name, that the male has no special colors, or dances to attract it's mate. It, instead, builds and decorates this seduction palace to attract it's mate. If the little lady likes it, he gets a quick hop in the feathers. Nature is pretty amazing.

Jan, that call is a begging call. It's one of the adults calling it's mate to bring more food.

Carol, This site says that most squirrels are vegetarians (but do you have any flying squirrels?) Maybe the pic is misleading, but the bigger little BBV gets, the safer he'll be. The important thing is you got him off the ground.

Have You Wondered: What Do Squirrels Eat?
"Most squirrels are vegetarians. There are a few exceptions like the flying squirrel". http://www.about-squirrels.com/what-do-squirrels-eat.html

Carol said...

Chloe, I didn't think the squirrels wanted to eat BBV, they wanted him out of there. They were just tormenting the baby.

When I came home today, I couldn't find BBV anywhere. He was not in the tree. I traced every branch. One of his parents was sitting up in a tree just looking at me. We looked at each other for a good while. I left and it left also. A little while later I found the baby again in another tree. The wind has been very strong today. The baby was in a tree down wind of the other tree. He was scooting around.

I took a walk with Maggie and when I came back, I couldn't find him again. I will chose to believe he was on the move. I can't take the stress anymore anyway. I hope V has a long, healthy life.

God speed little V.

Carol said...

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jan, it's a good thing to trust and have faith that he will be fine. The fact that he was in another tree would make me hope that he flew there. You never said whether you thought it's possible that he is older than you think. (?)

The other day, I saw that you said that you don't think that it's normal for your AC to be making that slushy sound, and you're right. It's making it because it's not draining properly. Can the guy that installed it climb up there to see if the drain is plugged?

Carol said...

Chloe, one is the new AC I brought when it got cold. The other did the same thing from the beginning. I didn't put either AC in but I think if a plug should have been removed, one of the guys that put those AC's in would have done it. Maybe they didn't read the directions well.

I told one guy about it and he said that's how it cools itself. I don't think so. Too much slushing sound. There is this little hole with a rubber gasket over it. I can lift it up, from outside, and the water runs out. It is in the lowest part of the underside of the outside cover. It looks like if there was a drain, that would be where it would be, but why the rubber cover over it?

Carol said...

And Chloe, maybe little V was in the trying to fly stage but why hadn't I seen him up on the branch until that very day. Actually I never saw any babies out on branches this time. Usually they sit out on a branch for a while. That will always be a mystery unless we find an owl expert to ask.

Anonymous said...

Hubby said sometimes they leave that cover on and you need to just cut through it or remove it. He said let the water out - it's supposed to drain out of there. You have a lot of humidity, and it takes a lot to get rid of it.

He said to let that water out of it.
The sound you hearing is no normal. It shouldn't have water in it.

Unless it's a swamp cooler, which I'm sure it's not! Free the water!!

... sorry, I'm still leaving off the end of a lot of my words.

Actually both ACs are off today. Cool outside today.

Carol said...

Actually, I went and looked and I still have a nail hanging from the older one. I stuck that up there to let it drain. The new one has the fork hanging from it. I'll drill holes in both rubber pieces this weekend.

I want you to know that I know 'exactly' how you feel about your little baby owl. I've been there so many times, doing the same thing as you about some form of life out there in the wilderness. What happens, is they become symbolic (at least to me). They represent all the other life that's out there and need help, and they make us want to make a difference.

I'm not saying this very well, but I hope you get what I mean. I know what you're feeling for him is pure love.
