Chloe, I just found baby V. He's trying to work his way up to his original nesting hole. He's very close. Has about two stories, up, to go. He's back in the old Cypress tree. I was trying to convince you and me that I was OK with not knowing... but I wasn't.

Anonymous said...

Carol, I am so happy you found him. How cute is that, trying to work his way up to his original home. I knew they were intelligent.

He's a survivor Carol!
I have a few animals that are like that. They'll make it, no matter what the circumstances.

I mentioned on the last blog that they found this supplement that they think may be why some people exposed to smoke or other respiratory irritants get lung cancer and some don't. They think that this Insotol or Insotrol may have something to do with it. It is available at health food stores. It's also in certain foods, ie bran, cantaloupe. It was on the NBC news last night.

Anonymous said...

I knew you weren't OK with it. I always say I don't care to, the times I care the most.

Carol said...

I'm not a good liar. You can see right thru me.

Carol said...

I wonder how "sparingly" they recommend the dark chocolate??? Only one dark chocolate Gold Brick a day??

jan said...

Carol, I am happy to hear about baby V. I think we are all like you and want to know what is going on with him.

Anonymous said...

I'm making comments that are disappearing again. I'm going to relink the story that disappeared - but am afraid they'll both show up.

Carol said...

Chloe, move your last comment over to this post.

jan said...

Carol, when we love someone or something, we want to see them and know what is going on with them. We are all with you. I look forward to hearing where baby V is and what he is doing now.

Carol said...

And I always think it is better to eat foods naturally higher in those chemicals that have been found to have healthy effects rather than take a supplement. There was some research done a while back that found that taking antioxidant supplements were not as effective as eating the foods high in them.

Carol said...

Chloe, I read that cantaloupe was the fruit highest in that inositol. We like that fruit and it's on sale somewhere here this week.

When I ran the diabetes center and did all those health assessments on the patients, I found that people with diabetes usually were people who mostly ate meat and starches. Their diets were very telling.

Anonymous said...

Carol, the foods it mentions are my favorite foods: 'fruits, beans, grains and nuts'.

I agree that it's better to get the chemicals from the food, but often the supplement has much more of the chemical (condensed). So maybe it's good to do both.

jan said...

Chloe, thank you for this post. I learned some things.

Anonymous said...

Yes Jan, we want to protect them. What Carol is feeling, is that 'nurturing' feeling we all feel. It's her mothering instinct at work.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I'm thinking of putting a large copy of it on the front of my fridge - just to keep the importance of it up most in my mind.

Anonymous said...

I must admit, those first two rows; 'fruits and vegetables, grains, pasta, and beans' are my favorite foods.

Carol said...

Solar, I read your fuzzy butt comment earlier today to some of my peeps at work. I can check in to the blog from my work computer even though I don't comment from there. We all got a good laugh.

Yes, where is our buddy Solar? He hasn't been here much.

I'm beat... see you guys tomorrow.

Glad I checked back tonight to see the good
news that little v is nearby...

Carol, your caring and efforts are being rewarded...it seems that little v is getting
stronger & growing up...

Jan & Chloe, you have both expressed so well
the emotions that Carol has been experiencing...

This video gives you an example of the begging call sound I've been talking about. This example is the baby version. The mama version is much louder.

Well, the DVR seems to be working tonight. I think a ghostie might have accidently erased Idol last night. Wonder if the ghostie was John :)

Carol, I enjoyed the link to the owl.

jan said...

Hi Coreen, glad you are checking in.

I am so happy tomorrow is Friday.

Carol said...

Ya know if little V woulda tumbled a few minutes either way, before or after, I may never have known about him. Wouldn't have some cute pics of him but also wouldn't have had to worry about his well being. That's kind of what I meant by owning him Chloe. I owned the responsibility, not the cute little fuzzy thing.

I already have enough owls tumbling outta trees at work. Most of them falling right on my head. I mean, we are littered with owls. They called me in the wee hours of the morning about our pregnant girl who tumbled out of bed. I should have had them call you Jan. You are getting ready to have some spare time.

My big boss has been calling a lot lately, almost everyday. I was kind of a pilot project for him. Only problem is we really didn't keep track of the cost savings I provided. He was trying to gather data 5 years after the fact. Was never told to keep any figures, like I would have had time to anyway, even though way back I did collect data. My pharmacist partner did also. Don't know where it all went in our chaos.

I think other areas of the State are considering doing what my hospital did with me. With all the calls I was getting from him, I was wondering what was up. I have been replaced by 5 people before. Yep, it took 5 or 6 people to do what I was doing at one of my jobs. I still don't think any of them had the passion I did for it though.

Well, yesterday he told me, with all the budget cuts, I had the only secure job at the hospital. I guess that means I can't plan on getting anyone to spot me for that week off, all at the same time, I been wanting for 5 years. In this economy, I better be glad I have a job and a paycheck and owls fallin on my head.

Carol said...

The news mentioned, both yesterday and today, that we're having one of the worst allergy seasons we've had in a while. Lots of pollin. More than usual. Ivy noticed that. I did too.

I go to feed my Fiddler at my house everyday. My poor pool is a wreck. It's only feet away from being under the huge 200+ year old oak tree. Yes, I was an idiot when I planned that pool.

Twice a year that tree looses all it's leaves and this time of year it drops all those fuzzy little worm looking flowers also. I think just about every leaf and fuzzy thing finds the pool.

My pool deck has a three inch deep carpet of those things on it and they are floating all over the pool. I have been raking some when I go over there. I went a couple of days ago, after a big south wind and I couldn't even find the pool, just a brown blanket across the area.

Yesterday, I stopped and did some raking. I made about 20 passes back and forth with the deep net. At the end of each pass I dumped about a 10 lbs net full of soggy flowers. It was really just a gesture, a little exercise. I found a broom and swept some of the carpet back away from the pool so they wouldn't blow in. I stirred up clouds of that yellow stuff. It looked like I had a yellow fog setting in. I got back in the truck, sneezing. I hit my steroid nasal spray when I got home.

I looked over all of our weather for the weekend and see we all have some nice weather. Some better than others. Alabama, you win the prize. You have four perfect days ahead. Get your garden gloves out. Plenty of shoulder exercise to do.

I missed seeing our Birdwoman here yesterday. Maybe she was out herding hummers. They are really warming up here. I need to put out another couple of feeders.

That article I linked about the inositol you mentioned last night disappeared again last night Carol, so I'm linking it again. Last night it kept disappearing, or showing up on the wrong thread. Blogspot is a very spooky place sometimes.

Gene found that may predict lung cancer in smokers
" Researchers have identified a group of genes that are especially active in lung cancer patients -- even in healthy tissue -- and said they may be used to predict which smokers will eventually develop lung cancer.

And, they said, a natural supplement derived from food that is being tested to prevent lung cancer appears to halt the precancerous changes.

.... the second group was taking the natural supplement, myo-inositol, to try to prevent lung cancer. In the patients whose lesions shrank after taking the supplement, PI3K also became less active, the researchers found.

"Together it gives us the story of the importance of this pathway," Bild added. "Whether it is going to save millions of people, who knows?"

Spira said he is working with Boston-based Allegro Diagnostics, which is halfway through a 60-patient clinical trial of the test.

The researchers have patented their findings through the universities but Bild said myo-inositol supplements are cheap and freely available.

Myo-inositol is also found in fruits, beans, grains and nuts, although Bild said the finding does not necessarily explain why people who eat more of these foods have a lower risk of cancer in general." http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100407/hl_nm/us_cancer_lung_prediction_1

Anonymous said...

... this is the article I was talking about when I said that fruits, beans, grains and nuts, are actually my favorite foods. I was glad to see that the Myo-inositol is found in them.

Anonymous said...

Carol, I missed your comment last night about cantaloupe being the highest fruit with inositol - and I had just bought one yesterday. Now I'll know to eat more of them (along with my watermelon, which I love).

This is some other info. on the benefits of the supplement - although I agree with you that it's better to get it from food. Those foods that it's in are also healthy to eat for many other reasons, and when I eat a lot of them (and less empty calories) I'm very prone to lose weight, so there's a double benefit.

"Like Choline, Inositol may be helpful in lowering an individual's cholesterol levels. However, Inositol has been found to be helpful in other areas as well, including the promotion of healthy hair, the prevention of eczema, and as an aid in the redistribution of body fat.

Should you take supplemental doses of inositol? According to some sources, taking supplemental inositol can increase the effectiveness of both choline and Vitamin E.

Inositol is part of the vitamin B complex. It promotes healthy brain development and function, and works closely with choline to move fats out of the heart and liver.
How does the body produce its own supply of inositol? Bacteria in the intestines convert the phytic acid found in plant fibers into inositol, so the body is able to manufacture its own supply of this substance. Inositol is also found in a variety of foods containing myo-inositol, such as cantaloupe, citrus fruits (other than lemons), nuts, oats, rice, beans, chickpeas, liver, pork, veal, whole grains, lecithin granules, and wheat germ.

Inositol supplements do not seem to pose a risk for toxicity. There is no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for inositol, but most people get about 1,000 milligrams a day from their food and doses as high as 50 grams have no reported side effects. http://www.vitaminstuff.com/inositol.html

Chloe,

"Carol, I missed your comment last night about cantaloupe being the highest fruit with inositol - and I had just bought one yesterday. Now I'll know to eat more of them (along with my watermelon, which I love)."

Two of the best for overall health.!! Im not trying to convince anyone when I say that when I Juice these melons, im extracting valuable vitamins and minerals from the rind, seeds and all.!

Instead of getting 5 % of the melons nutritional benefits, you get 95 %. Thats quite a difference.!!
For instance, from the green rind of a watermelon, we get chlorophyll, pro-vitamin A, protein, and potassium. From the inner rind, which will give one a stomach ache if we attempt to eat it, we get zinc, more potassium, iodine, and vitally important nucleic acids and enzymes that aid with digestion.

When i blend these..there is no clean up...and I don't even think about that...I eat off dishes that I have to clean...so i think about my blender like that.....going to look up the exact of watermelon benefits...going to be surprised.!! how are the horses doing...did they make it thru the winter in perfect shape?

Anonymous said...

Hi Solar,
Thanks for the melon tips. I'll try it.
The horses are doing fine, 'eating like horses' and breaking down a weak spot in the fence every so often, but other than that, they're not much trouble.

You're right about Emma - and the shoes I've been wearing to keep up with her are running shoes (and it's still rough). I'd forgotten that things don't get easier, for a while they just keep getting more hectic. But like I said before, around 4 yrs old, things settle down. There's a lot more communication by then.

Hope things are going well for you.

... taking off, will check in later.

Melons are some my favorite foods. After reading this, I may be off to buy some.

U have to juice them for the full benefits...put seeds rinds and all......later

Evening folkes. I hadn't seen my BBV all day until just a moment ago. I saw mama or papa over behind my neighbor's house. I searched, the best I could in that area but couldn't find him but I heard the begging call.

My neighbor spotted him tonight and pointed him out. I had already searched that area earlier. He's hopping from tree to tree and exercising his little wings. While we were watching, he flapped his wings and hopped to another branch and got one wing caught on a little limb. He didn't seem to be able to get free. Oh no, I can't take this. He finally freed himself from the hang up, and hopped over to another branch. Mama is watching from a distance and I'm sure not as stressed as I am.

When I came home for lunch, I looked around up in the trees but saw nothing. I heard the begging call so I perked my ears to try to figure out exactly where the sound was coming from. While my ears were in full perk, I heard a few grass blades kringling down below. I looked down and about 4 feet from my where I was standing was this very fat snake slithering along. It was right next to where my bass boat is parked. The head of the snake was already headed under the boat deck. The only snake around here that I've seen that is that fat is a water moccasin. I slithered away in the opposite direction, real fast.

From now on I will be doing more head bobbing that little V is. Up for owls, down for snakes. Up and down. Before long I'll have a little vertigo myself.

My neighbor just told me he has a sparrow that made a nest in his house, in a Halloween mask he has hanging up. They leave the back sliding glass door open and it came in and made itself at home. At night it, when the door is closed, it sits on the nest. In the morning, it's peeping to go out. He said sometime is flys in and just walks out. This is quite a neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

Oh boy Carol, and just think, this is just the beginning of the season. I can't leave a door open like your neighbor does, because we have way too many flies and other insects out here. I used to be able to do that in Ca. The only thing I've ever had come inside here are some possums, through a cat door that I've since closed off. I freaked because I don't like those things.

Emma's going to a birthday party with her mom tomorrow, and I think we are going to P.F. Changs for lunch. We were going to go to a movie, but from what I can see, it's all junk out right now. I made lasagna today, so we may just eat leftovers on Sunday - I 'should' have an easy weekend, at least that's what I'm counting on.

See you guys tomorrow.

Carol said...

Chloe, I can't leave my door open because of Maggie but if I did, I would have bugs here also. I get bugs in here with everything closed. Maybe they just do it now, while it's cool. I wonder how long it takes for those sparrows to hatch.

Carol said...

I hope you enjoy your little vacation. I'm sure it's nice to get a little break every now and again. Need a little time to go, whew!

Anonymous said...

Oh, Carol, I'm glad it's going well for little V and that he's learning to fly and staying healthy.

His learning to fly reminds me of what Emma's going through toddling around the house. It's so cute, but she does get herself in a lot of trouble.

What could possibly be cuter and sweeter than brand new life. Like you say, all babies are so cute (except possums!)

Anonymous said...

Thanks Carol. Yep, it is nice to get a little break, and I do go whew, when I do.

Hubby babysat a couple of hours for me today - he does that whenever I want, if he's home (which isn't often on weekdays). But when he is, I get lots of help and it make everything easier.

Carol said...

Heck, just part time owl baby watching and worrying has worn me out!

Anonymous said...

I get bugs even though it's closed too. I really hate flies.

I don't know how long it takes to hatch - we'll have to look it up.

Carol said...

I wonder where Birdwoman is?

It wears us out because we care 'too much' Carol.

Carol said...

Can you imagine if little Emma had to do trees?? You'd have to run around on the ground with a net.

Anonymous said...

... saw this online, but not sure it's right;

"The gestation of sparrow eggs is 10-15 days and incubation is shared between the parents."

Anonymous said...

Well, eventually she probably will climb trees. And she is already a good climber. I had to move a toy chest in her room because it was under a window, and she was climbing up on it, and beating on the window to get gampa's attention outside (and her play room is on the 2nd floor).

P.S. Your pollen story was lol, Carol.

Did you put on a mask or do you have some of that steroid nasal spray too?

jan said...

Carol & Chloe,
Enjoyed reading your conversation.

Carol said...

Hey Solar, I ain't eating or drinking my cantaloupe rind. Sorry.

And Chloe, the main reason I prefer to use the real thing rather than a supplement is because of what we discussed a while back. I don't trust those supplement makers. Sorry. If there were just more regulations.

We no long live in a world that screams "trust me, I'm looking out for you". It's a world that screams, "bend over, I got somethin for ya". I have to look up, look down and look all around.

Carol said...

I was doing some reading on Barred owls last night and came across this website where they showed all these people who were attacked by them. They all had these tallon wounds on their faces, right around their eyes. Seems like most of them were from up in the PNW. I guess the owls up there have a bad attitude.

I had read about that before and continue to keep that possibility in the back of my mind, especially the day I rescued little V. I did have that one year where one parent owl did swoop down toward me when I was standing on one of my little decks. It did change it's mind just before it got too close. Maybe it just didn't recognize me in what I was wearing that day.

Carol said...

I see we have some pretty consistant stars on our map from Gloucester and Gosport, UK. You know anyone from around those parts Ivy? It certainly would be cool if they would join our little party. As it would for anyone else from our little map.

Anonymous said...

Wow, what a story. There are others rescuing birds too, Carol.

Alaska eagle survives plunge after mating dance
"The day being Easter, Benda took the bird home and figured he would keep her warm and comfortable in a crate in his heated garage until the end came. The next morning, she was still breathing and moving a wing, and by that night, she was being flown to Anchorage.

"I didn't see how she could survive, but now I'm so happy she did," Benda said." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100410/ap_on_re_us/us_death_spiral

Chloe, people aren't the only species that get in trouble trying to mate. It seems it's a treacherous sport.

I am so happy its saturday. Going out to watch our 8 year old Grand daug play soccer. I had my healthy shake this morn and my 2 mile walk and 15 min on elliptical. As James Brown used to sing "I feel good, da-da-da-da-da"

Hope you guys are having a good day.

Carol, I would love to know how little BBV is doing.

jan said...

Chloe, I enjoy your stories about Emma. She is off and running now, isn't she? This is a time when you proably need more rest. I bet you sleep well at night.

jan said...

Solar, You better believe I will be buying lots of melons this season, but like Carol, I won't be eating the rind.

Carol said...

Jan, I think I caught sight of little V this morning but lost him again. He's a mover and shaker. I did see both mama and papa making their rounds. I've been outside playing for most of the morning so now it's time to do the Saturday chores, shopping and washing.

I've also been on the phone with the joint a good bit this AM. If there is a rare medical condition, that is both complicated and expensive to manage, you can beat, that we have it in our jail. It's so crazy. I have a several things I have to deal with that I have never even heard of in the 38 years I've been practicing.

Solar said...

Once again, I did not say to eat the rind....no way here either....but when it is juiced...and im not trying to convince anyone to juice or not to juice...it does not taste like U are imagining...it compliments the rest of the melon....is sometimes add some berries to it,and it tastes like a tropical drink.....the problem with juicing is that it is not understood....

It has been my experience that when I want to try something out...I try to understand it first..there are books on juicing....to do it is ones choice or don't do it...I was just giving out info.....

Solar said...

Going to have a perfect day around here...one more post for today, and my last for this juicing thing..the reason is that U keep thinking that i say to eat the rind...i don't.!

Water melon rind ( juiced, and does not taste like U think it might taste when u eat it raw...and all pulps are not either....can be used for garden)both the green and the white part, is exceptionally nutritious, full of vitimen A, potassium, and zinc.

Zinc fights impotence. It strengthens our bodies so that they are less susceptible to hernias and it cleanses the urogenital canal, as well as the bladder while contributing to a healthy prostate.

Watermelon is tied for the number one diuretic in the fruit world, close to cranberries. It reals es a free-radical scavenger that re-oxygenates cells, reverses the peroxide emission dying cells put forth, and effectively acts as anti-aging agent...ok I won't post any more juice post's but wanted it understood...not misunderstood..If we wanted a healthier society, lower cost of ins...this type of information would be understood.....some would make the choice....some would not....

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
FYI, I believe it's Barred Owl aggression in the PNW that now threatens the Spotted Owl, more than even the loggers once did. There was a very interesting article in National Geographic not too long ago. Like the guy on "Dirty Jobs" said, perfect killing machines.

jan said...

Solar, LOL I get it - you did not say the rind. I absolutely love watermelon. I like canteloupe too - but I cannot get enough watermelon when in season. I am so glad to hear about how good it is for you. I love cranberries too but they require a lot of sugar to make palatable. Watermelon and canteloupe need nothing more.

Solar, I don't have a juicer. My sister has had Crohns (a disease of the small intestine) for 40 years. They told her she had a short life-expectancy about 30 years ago and she has fooled them all. The reason is she had a juicer and juiced fruits and vegs until she literally turned orange. She now has to have IV's with fats and proteins in them to keep her going. She does the IV's at home 5 nights a week.

On another birdie note, I got visual confirmation that bluebirds have once again claimed their rightful place in their nesting box. Last year, chickadees beat them to it. The year before that, they only had one egg-laying with chicks that did not fledge due to cat predation. (Not Miss College's Cat, probably our neighbors' cat who we've nicknamed Smokey-Stormy 'cuz one or the other of those is his name, but we can never remember; he hangs at our house a lot hoping MCC will come out so he can bother her.) Anyway, I now have what I hope is a completely cat-proof baffle on the front of the nest box. I am keeping my fingers crossed for baby bluebirds this season.

I saw on the news that one of the last remaining "Wizard of Oz" movie Munchkins has passed away at the age of 94. At the time the movie was made, it was so overshadowed by "Gone With The Wind" that no one thought it would become the classic it now is. Only when it began being broadcast on television did it begin to reach the wider audiences. I remember it being an annual classic "must see" in our house growing up. It meant especially a lot to my sister, and I can't now say I recall why. Maybe it will come to me as I ponder her this week that will mark the eighth year since her passing. The time for grieving has passed, and it is now the happy times of her life that I wish to remember.

The other timely point of the sad Munchkin news, it that the "Land of Oz" has become to me a place of richness and depth in the amazing story-telling of Gregory Maguire's "Wicked" series.

He's making me crazy!

Here's Fuzzy Butt V, 6 days post rescue, up in the highest branch of the highest tree. I have my camera on full zoom. The wind is blowing and that branch is swaying. He's bended over looking down. Maybe he's working up the courage for a soar. Hope not. Too soon dumb ass, I mean Fuzzy butt.

He's making me crazy

Oh, I'd say he's about 7-8 stories up there.

I'm munching on cantaloupe today. I got a pretty good one. I used my smell the stem end and if it smells sweet, it may be a good one. It worked. It's a might bit tasty and sweet. Wally World had them for a buck and a quarter today.

Chloe, I'm glad you put the inositol info on the blog. While I was shopping I pulled it up on Iphony to make sure I was buying the things I needed.

I bought no junk food today but then I still have a week or so of my Gold Bricks eggs left. He He.

Ivy, I feel sure your sis is right there with you, all the time. She can do that, ya know.

"The time for grieving has passed, and it is now the happy times of her life that I wish to remember"

Ivy, what a lovely way to remember your sister in watching a movie she loved and that you watched together as a family.

I remember my dad when I hear certain music played - he loved Chet Atkins and Les Paul. I have CDs I play at the times of my dad's birthday or the anniversary of his death. My dad and I had many conflicting times but we both loved music and singing and that is what I cherish most about our time together. Strangely now, I remember the good times with him.

The Mallard drama heated up this evening. Mr. and Ms were here eating corn and bread I threw out when the two young studs ducks came flying in all aggresive like. One went after Mr. and the other after the Ms. The Ms. flew off with the young suitor hot on her tail. Mr. injured a wing so he can't fly so he was swimming after them as fast as he could. The second punk drake jumped on his back and was trying to poke Mr.'s head under water. I think he was trying to drown him.

I woulda tried to intervene but I can't swim that fast or fly... yet. They got outta sight so I don't know how the drama ended. It's Peyton Duck Place around here. Those two punk ducks were totally uninvited!

Carol said...

Now, all I can see are the Ms. and the two punks. I don't see Mr. anywhere. They are swimming circles around her and she's bitching up a storm. It gets pretty rough here in the hood.

Anonymous said...

Oh wow Carol. There's been a lot of drama around your place today. Glad to hear that Fuzzy Butt is trying out his wings so much (or bravely jumping around, whichever the case). The important thing is that he's being fed.

It's probably normal for a couple of young studs to come along and try to take Mr. M's place, but I sure hate to hear it. Dang, I hope Mr. turns up OK. It really is a rough world out there in the animal kingdom. (I hate to think about that visual you described with them going after Mr. like that - I assume they're the ones who damaged his wing to begin with)

Ivy, Glad to see your Blue Birds got their nesting box back this year, and hope your cat-proof baffle does it's job. It can really be hard to keep a determined cat away from his target.

Jan, i was feeling pretty guilty this morning, when I read about all the exercise you got in- especially that 2 mile walk. I remember that great feeling (although, only vaguely, because it's been so long) you get after exercising, along with the feeling of accomplishment and well being

"Cantaloupe contains vitamin A and C, calcium, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, iron, potassium, healthy fat, carbohydrates, healthy proteins, and antioxidants. Eating cantaloupe as a healthy snack helps prevent stomach cancer, poor digestive tracts, high blood pressure, heart disease, inflammation, kidney problems, prostate cancer, colon cancers, the common cold, and blood deficiencies. Cantaloupe also provides our bodies with tons of fiber that is very good for maintaining healthy weights and blood sugar levels. All you would have to do is eat a few slices of cantaloupe a day to get these health benefits from it."

"Watermelon contains potassium, antioxidants, carotenoids, carbohydrates, Vitamin A, B6, and C, calcium, thiamin, sodium, healthy protein, and fiber. Eating a couple slices of watermelon a day can help prevent strokes, heart attacks, kidney infections and stones, heart disease, breast, colon, prostate, lung, endometrial cancers, digestive disorders, poor eye sight, and hair loss" http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2733429/health_benefits_you_can_get_from_simply_pg2.html?cat=5

... tomorrow I'm going to look up the berries. Blue berries are supposed to be amazingly nutritious.

Carol, you were smart to buy all the right foods today. I had doughnuts this morning and ice cream this afternoon. I can't believe i did that, but i'll get back on track tomorrow(or Monday :)

Carol said...

Thanks for the help in doing that Chloe. I had the info at my fingertips. I like that pyramid. Sharing all this info does help get and keep me motivated.

Hello Everyone,
Carol, I love your animal stories. I like to keep up with Mr. & Ms. M and Fuzzy Butt so keep us updated.

Jeremy and Steph.(my son & DIL) are in Kentucky this weekend for a baby shower for Steph. That is where she is from. Every time I hear something about the baby, I get so excited.

Chloe, I love reading your stories about Emma. I can just see her on the toybox beating on the window. She is at such a cute age. I lol when I read your stories.

Carol said...

I bought a quart of hot and sour soup at takee outee yesterday. For supper I'm having some of it, sauted asparagus(without the cell phone this time), cooked spinach, and cantaloupe. It's all very good. I'll probably be hungry again in a couple of hours but that's when the dark chocolate Gold Brick egg comes to the rescue.

jan said...

Carol, that was one healthy supper. Grand daughter played very well today. Her team won 7-2. She didn't make any goals but she was good team player. Last Sat. she had to use her inhaler during the game, but not today. It is easy to spot her out on the field. All her little teammates have pony tails. She has 2 pig tails. Her hair is down to her waist - so her braids are long. She is at the age where she has her front permanent teeth and her face has not grown into her teeth yet. She also has big brown eyes like her mother. I think she is about the cutest thing I have seen.

jan said...

Mary, so good to hear about your "grand baby." They must be about 6 months along now?? I am getting excited for you too.

Chloe, I did so well on my nutrition today. I had my fruit and yoghurt smoothie this morning. A chicken, veg and noodle soup for lunch, some chicken "dumplings" with tomatoes, onions & artichoke hearts - then tonight blew it all on some Ben & Jerry's ice cream. So, we can't be good all the time.

jan said...

John and I went to the movies tonight and saw "Date Night" We enjoyed it. Someone once said "there are only about 5 plots in novels and movies, that are repeated over and over." This plot reminds me of the movie that has been remade a couple of times where the couple go to the big city for some reason (interview for a new job is one example) and run into all kinds of problems. Well, it is that kind of plot. But it is very funny.

jan said...

Chloe, I have to find ways to exercise. You have a built-in exercise machine in Emma.

Good night and good luck (not original).

"I have a new theory that the Tenth Plague was carried by pollen."

Ivy, I wonder if back in those days people had allegies and what they did about them.

We have these little yellow dime-size circles from the trees all over our front porch and yard. I don't know if it is pollen or what?

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
That sounds like pollen to me.
People must have gotten some allergies in ancient times. They probably used natural remedies. If you eat honey made by bees from your local pollen, you are supposed to acquire immunity. Also, the neti pot is "ancient wisdom" for sinus relief that still works today.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
Tina Fey is too funny tonight on SNL. Funniest skit: "Brownie Husband." She mentioned that her movie "Date Night" just opened. You must be one of the first to go see it.

I woke up this morning with ducks on my mind. I know it's nuts but this is a place to leave your ponders and I didn't say they exactly had to be normal, just somewhat socially acceptable. Hey, I didn't tell you I was normal but then you may have already figured that out for yourself.

Let me tell you bout the birds and the bees
and the owls in the trees,
and the ducks up above
and a thing called love.
(you know the tune to that, huh?)

Carol said...

After waking up with ducks on my mind, I stepped outside and what do I see? It was the two bad boy ducks swimming up. I don't feed them and they don't even eat when I'm feeding my friends. I'm sure they are here waiting to ambush my friends. What did I do? I threw something at them and told them to hit the sky. Glad no one was watching.

It's a rough kingdom out there. The boys having to beat each other up over a woman. But they don't usually forced themselves on the woman, do they? Usually the female has to give the OK, doesn't she?

What one of the bad boys was doing to Mr. yesterday, while he was swimming after his girl, did look like a mating behavior. And believe me, Mr. didn't say OK. I never saw either duck jump the Ms. though, they just chased her around begging.

Carol said...

I found that skit you mentioned on Hulu Ivy. It is funny, at least for us girls.

In keeping with Chloe's theme for this post, I found an interesting article on Huff Post:

Glutathione: The Mother of All Antioxidants

"It's the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease -- yet you've probably never heard of it. It's the secret to prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more, and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer's disease."

It's found in sulfur rich foods.."..broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc."

Carol said...

Another interesting Huff Post article. One I needed.

Who Or What Do You Trust?

"Trust in God, but tie up your camel"

Carol said...

Guess what folkes. Papa's back, he's still the man. He and his misses are here and of course, the bad boys are still trailing them. He looks pretty good today. No worse for wear.

Carol said...

That will be the sermon today unless one you ya have a better idea.

"Trust in God, but tie up your camel" Short and sweet.

Carol said...

And just to make you feel better Chloe, I'm having some Jimmy Dean hot pork breakfast sausage with my All Bran. I'm doing it all for you Chloe. I didn't really want it but I want you to feel better.

Carol said...

And why was that pork sausage in my shopping basket? Musta fallen in there and I didn't catch it at the check out. I guess it is too late to bring it back, I already cut into it.

Carol said...

My Prothonotary Warbler is back. I saw it yesterday and there's a nest going. I only see one, each year, about this time. It easy to spot with it's pretty yellow color.

Carol said...

And baby V is still out there, high in a pine tree this morning, easy to find today. He's all fluffed up, probably to keep warm. He seems to be developing at a rapid rate, losing some of that baby fuzz.

Carol said...

And that All Bran...looks and tastes like something I should be feeding the ducks, but I'm eating it, hear me, crunch, crunch, crunch.

jan said...

I just watched "brownie husband" OMG I think I am going to be sick - but I am still LOL.

Ivy, thanks for telling us about it.
Carol, thanks for posting the link.

Carol, the one group of foods I rarely eat are the ones you mentioned that are highest in antioxidents - cabbage, etc. These foods never appealed to me.

Did you see on the news that this couple (I don't know where) make gallons and gallons of sourkraut every year for the fair - and win in their category. Well, their neighbors have complained to the police about the smell.

jan said...

I do eat broccoli sometimes - but need some ranch dressing on it.

jan said...

Well, gotta go. Lots to do today. I am having the family over tonight for dinner. I am not the cook that you are Carol. I usually buy the food we eat. I think I will have all the fixins for chicken salads - greens, tomatoes, yellow and red peppers, chopped chicken breasts. I will get broiled chickens at Costco this afternoon and dice the chicken breasts for the salads. I will get some fruit to go with the salads. For dessert, I will have strawberry shortcake. I will have several types of salad dressings. All my kids and grandkids here are health nuts. So they will like this.

Carol said...

Yes, those foods do smell awful when they are cooking. When they cook them at work, I start looking for someone with an infection. Sorry about that visual.

Carol said...

Sounds great Jan and like lots of fun.

Carol said...

It's time for me to hit the shower and get outside. I was waiting for it to warm up a little. Not bad, just a little cool for my taste. I've gone way over my word count limit today anyway.

Carol, I feel so much better now that you ate that unhealthy sausage - thanks for the sacrifice. Now we can both start being better again tomorrow (not that your sausage is nearly as bad as my donuts and ice cream).

Glad to hear all is going well in the animal Kingdom. I was anxious to hear that Mr. Duck was back, and doing fine. Sorry to hear that Baby Fuzz Butt is starting to mature already, but glad he's progressing at the same time.
ps I bought some all bran yesterday too (that, and granola - think about those grains)..... good that you're having some with that sausage).

Natural Blues are the Right Color to Bring out Your Best
“When it comes to brain protection, there's nothing quite like blueberries, according to Tufts neuroscientist James Joseph,” as recounted in Newsweek (6/17/02). "'call the blueberry the brain berry,– says Joseph, who attributes the effects to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.” In the Wall Street Journal (4/29/03), a recent article on reversing memory loss noted “blueberries . . . had the strongest impact” in a study showing aging rodents behaved more like their younger counterparts when fed several different fruits.

In fact, blueberries are a standout fruit in the 5 A Day The Color Way™ for Better Health Program, the nation's largest public-private nutrition education initiative. With the goal of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption to 5 A Day for 75 percent of Americans by 2010, the program recommends that consumers should Eat Your Colors. Of course that means blueberries as one of the top fruits and vegetables in the Blue/Purple category. According to the program, blues and purples lower the risk of some cancers and promote urinary tract health, memory function, and healthy aging with their varying amounts of health-promoting phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and phenolics, currently being studied for their antioxidant and anti-aging benefits. " http://www.oregonblueberry.com/health.html

Strawberries: "Fountain of Youth: Prevents Neuronal and Behavioral Aging

Strawberries may protect against the decline of the central nervous system in age-related neurodegenerative diseases and to provide benefits to the aging brain[2].

"Research suggests that the polyphenolic compounds found in berry fruits, such as blueberries and strawberries, may exert their beneficial effects either through their ability to lower oxidative stress and inflammation or directly by altering the signaling involved in neuronal communication, calcium buffering ability, neuroprotective stress shock proteins, plasticity, and stress signaling pathways. These interventions, in turn, may exert protection against age-related deficits in cognitive and motor function."[3] http://www.healthassist.net/blog/food/strawberries-health-benefits/

Here's something else to ponder on!

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Mary, It is so great to have you back. I love your "statement for the day" about not going to our graves with a well preserved body.skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

That is great!

Coreen, good for you. I think Ladies and Solar, the secret of life is what Mary said above. Eat and drink what we love and makes us feel good.

Ivy, I have been sweeping the pollen off my front porch. I have also been trimming the plants in front of my house. Should have done that in the fall. I am getting my porch ready for sittin. John and I love to sit out on the front porch early in morn and late in the evening. Most people here sit in their walled in back patios and gardens. In OK and ARk where we are from, people often sat on the front porch when we were growing up and chatted with friends and neighbors as they strolled by. A delightful thing about our neighborhood is that there are a lot of walkers and bike riders and it feels like old times.
Mary, I think I will have a glass of wine tonight and a chocolate while I sit on my front porch.

jan said...

Carol, I think little V has grown up. He seems much bigger to me. Please keep taking and sending pics to us.

Chloe, I will post some pics of little 8 y/o granddaughter soon.

Jan, I'm lucky in that I love broccoli, and some of the other healthy veggies they mention, and sometimes even crave it. Maybe it's because I need it. I do put seasoning on it and that, I can't believe it ain't, butter on it. That makes a big difference. I use to put vinegar on it also but haven't really desired that lately.

Wally World had broccoli for a good price yesterday so I got two bunches. I love spinach also. Every week I buy a big bag of it for my salads and then toward the end of the week, I cook the rest of the bag up and eat it all.

I will not force myself to eat something I don't like just because it is good for me. I think the All Bran will fall in that category. Do you think it would be safe to give to the birds or squirrels? If I give it to the ducks, I'd have to put out a bowl, it's too small for them to find in the grass.

Except for melons, I'm not a big fruit eater. I buy it and it just rots in the frig.

Mary said...

It has turned into a pretty day, so far...had to take some pics of my weeping cherry trees since they will be shedding the pink blossoms shortly, popped out on Friday...they only last a couple of days...last Sunday, the white snow mountain cherries in front of the house popped out but all the blossoms fell within 2 days...all green now...the big trees are still pretty much bare, just a hint of a green starting...

This is in sharp contrast to the thick growth
you guys have already...

My feathered friends were all out earlier, even the mallards and a turkey showed up, along with our lone....hey,hey,hey,hey,hey....Woody...

Carol, I eat both broccoli & spinach, but only
raw spinach in salad & broccoli that has been
cooked firm, not mushy & then after it is fridge cold, red wine vinegar dressing on it...

I have found the best way to be sure to get that fruit before it gets too ripe, is cut it up into a fruit salad, then it is easy to just get a dish from the fridge...I find that when we do that I generally eat it more than when just picking an individual piece up at a time...

If you think you don't like cooked spinach, try this. After it is cooked, drain the spinach. In a frying pan, melt some margerine or butter and saute some finely chopped garlic. When the garlic is sauteed, add a touch of flour and stir, then add your spinach and saute for a little while. It really makes that spinach good. I've gotten people who hate all vegetables to eat spinach that way.

That's how mom made our spinach and when my sisters and I were young, we'd eat all the spinach before the rest of the dinner was ready. We also added a little drizzle of vinegar. I don't do that very often anymore.

Try it, you'll like it, if you like garlic.

I was sooo glad Michelson won yesterday. I was sending all my good thoughts his way. That big bear hug he gave his wife after he won was such a contrast to all the Tiger stuff we have heard for so long. I bet there were a lot of tears flowing for Phil yesterday. I contributed a few.

IMO, golf takes a lot of skill but at times there has to be luck involved. You can get those balls close but those hole in ones or the ones that roll around and go in the hole have to have something pushing it. Maybe we can influence that with our thoughts. I was trying yesterday. I was trying to push Tiger's ball away from the hole when he was putting and they did just roll past several times. He has just been in too many holes and he needed a rest.

Talk about luck in golf, I chipped one in from a ditch once. I couldn't see the hole, the flag or the green. My golf partner said, hey it's over this way. Believe me there was no skill involved. I didn't even learn the game until I was 50. I did love it but it just took up more time than I have for any hobby.

Carol, LOL -
I too played some golf when I lived in Argentina. That was the only time in my life that I had some time to do that. I never really liked it. Too time consuming. My 2 oldest sons play regularly. They must get it from their dad - he plays too. Steve, my youngest, played when he was much younger. He is too busy now with 2 teen age daughters, working full-time and working on a doctorate. Did I mention his wife has Multiple Sclerosis. I worry about him sometimes.

Chloe....Talking about birthday's I hope that we did not miss yours...u never told me when it was..but I do know that it is near, or just passed shortly.....

We celebrate all kinds of bogus holiday's, and should also celebrate our birthday.... winning the lottery to be born is truly a BIG deal...what are the odds?

Carol, I love to golf..and for different reasons....but I like going out by my self....like taking a long, long walk and meditating...

what it also does is to train one to concentrate on a goal and finding solutions to achieve it...there are many decisions to be made while golfing...when analized it is a very good way to teach the young about the good and the bad decisions that we make each and every day, with each and every stroke....

Many men don't know this but they also take up golf to refine the little lies that make up daily life..we all do this in order to survive...did you know that there are healthy lies,a nd unhealthy ones...

I also used golf to train ....up at 4 am first one off the tea, and run the course...after a while my high scores came down...and was in great shape..

I did golf pretty well, most t imes between 88- 94 but haven golfed a lot in the last cpl of years...lucky to break 100

I used to like some golfers on a revolving scale....Arnold Palmer, Jack N, Lee Trevino, and Gary Player....they entertained us a lot imo.....later lots to do

Thanks C-Bob for the info.

Little V is still up there. He's growing like a weed. Or maybe it's a she. Female owls are larger than males and this one seems to be getting big fast. Today I wasn't sure if it was little V because it was so big but still has that baby fuzz. Mama and daddy must be feeding that baby well.

Today V is in a tree that is a little closer to me. It seems to be watching me now.

Girls, if any of your husbands watch dancing with the stars, it's a night to either get a bucket of cold water ready or to take advantage of it. It's rauchy dancing night!

Dancing With the Stars is on. This week they get 2 scores. One for technique and one for performance.

Chloe, When is your birthday??

Mary said...

OK, The ghost is in my computer. I just sent a comment and it said it was published but I don't see it.

Mary said...

Now it showed up.

That dance couldn't have been easy with back pain.

Carol said...

Nicole's dance seemed more like yoga to music than a dance.

And Solar, I didn't think you were a day over 18.

Looks like everyone evacuated and forgot to tell me which way to run. Well, I guess I will hold down the fort or fart, which becomes necessary. I have been hitting the brocoli pretty hard.

Baby V, day 8.

He's a big boy now

When I stepped outside tonight, the parent begging sound is so close, one of them must be right above my head. Too dark to see. The sound is so loud that I think they are asking me to go in and cook something. If they would just tell me what, I would.

Carol, thank you for the pics of baby V. He/she is getting so big.

I enjoyed DWTS tonight. The judges were tough. I like to watch the tall blonde, Erin, dance. What does she do in real life? It seems I heard she is a sports announcer.

I do feel bad for Kate. Her husband or ex is giving her a hard time, according to the news. She may get some sympathy votes.

I ate crappy today, and I don't mean the fish. Gotta watch it tomorrow.

Carol, John is doing better, but he is getting dizzy quite a bit. what do you think?

Good night.
