What's the significance of the meteor and asteroid visits?

What are the odds that, a few hours apart, on the same day, two major historic asteroidal type objects, both of which are unique will interactive with the earth? Not my question, but one I heard on Coast to Coast early this morning from a Richard Hoagland. I think that the guy speaking thinks that one was no accident. Haven't finish listening. The coincidence is rather interesting.

Don't know if they were related.  There are conflicting reports.  Could only find links that reported that they were not connected.  Let me know if you find something else.

Was busy last 2 days and did not check out the news so your info on the meteor and asteroid were new to me. Have to go back and read the news. Well, the earth could be destroyed and I would not know it.

Going to see Life of Pi in movies today. John and I both read the book. It was sort of a fantasy but one of most interesting books I have read. I will let you know what I think of the movie.

RR - enjoy having you hear and reading your comments.

Carol, went over to TM and read your letter from Hillary. Very Cool! It is and will be worth something some day.

Did I ever tell you here that John sat across the table with Bill Clinton in a case in AR that involved Bill's aunt. John was President of a counseling center in Hot Springs AR and had fired Bill's aunt. Bill was a professor at Univ of Arkansas' law school - young whippersnapper - at the time - before he was Governor. Bill was successful in getting his aunt reinstated. Sometime later, John's dad died and Bill wrote John a handwritten letter, expressing his condolences and telling John he did a good job in the meeting over Bill's aunt. John was mad at Bill and threw away the letter. He could kick himself now.

jan said...

John did change his mind about Bill C. and we both like him. We both feel Bill will go down in history as one of our best presidents. We both will get out and work for Hillary if she runs for Pres. if we are both still around. Hope to be!

Significance?...Need Bruce Willis ....

Very cool Jan. My Hillary note is a little worn out. When I moved out of my house, I put it in my glove box in my truck. It stayed there for a while.

Carol said...

We need Solar. Where are you Solar.

Jan, let me know what y'all thought about the movie. Was it hard to get through the beginning? I seem to remember that there were some animals that died or something. There was something that I thought I might have a problem with in that movie.

Carol said...

This morning I was thinking about putting up a blog post about the meteor and the asteroid. I wasn't sure I could put up one with this laptop out at the camp. I'm using IE and I seem to remember that it wasn't compatable with putting up blog posts here.

I went over the TM and Craig had a post about the meteor and the asteroid so I did put up the post here anyway just to see if I could but went over there to discuss it.

I have to be careful what I say over there because I see significance to things that happen in life and most people just think...shit happens. I want to find out who's doing the shitting and why and what it means. Many people think that's crazy. I'm OK with that. I have to march to my own drummer. And so often when I really ponder things, keep my eyes open, I do find significance to things that happen. It may take a long time and I may only see them months to years later.
And I only see them because I'm looking for them. I can even see them when it's not even my life involved.

Some experiences in life will only come to us if we are open to them. I try to be open to those experiences that I know I can handle. It's like those orb experiences I had when mom died. I would have never had those experiences if I hadn't been prepared and open to them.

Synchronicity happens to me frequently.

This morning, listening to C2C I learned of a new website that looks interesing. It involves the I Ching. It even has a free smart phone app. I downloaded the app. I'll check it out before I tell y'all about it.

This morning I wanted to try out my new shower here. I quickly learned that I didn't have any shampoo, or mousse, or hairspray or makeup or blow dryer or brush. I had borrowed them for my house. I did have shower wash so that is what I used to wash my hair. I found some old hair gel and used it. I looked pretty rough but went to Walmart anyway. I just don't care what I look like anymore. It used to be that even if I went camping, I had to wash and dry my hair and put on makeup. Glad I'm over that. Makes life so much easier.

I swear that TM seems to have a poltergeist haunting that place. I shouldn't have mentioned ghosts.

I'm watching an old Clint Eastwood movie, Sudden Impact. I used to like him before he started talking to chairs.

jan said...

The movie Life of Pi was good. Of course, I read the book and knew what was going to happen. It may not be other people's cup of tea. Yes, there are animals in the movie and yes, most do die. The focus of the movie is on the Indian boy and the tiger. It is about survival. I did wait until the end of the movie for that disclaimer - it did come- that no animals were harmed in the making of the movie.

jan said...

Rented the movie Looper to watch tonight. It is about time travel. Bruce Willis is in it.

Hope it is good.

Made spaghetti for supper - actually linguine. That is what I had on hand. I have been hungry for spaghetti. I cut up an onion and then sauteed it and added a lb of ground round and browned it with the onion. ( I got some really good sauce on sale) Then added some already prepared sauce and voila - dinner. I had some mozzarella and parmesan cheese to go on top and some artichoke hearts on the side. Yum.

Carol said...

Sounds good Jan. It's cold here, not by your standards but by mine. I made chili, no beans. I don't tolerate beans. I use rotele tomatoes in my chili, along with tomato sauce. Of course onions, regular and green, and lots of garlic. Won't have to worry about vampires tonight. Because that wasn't the healthiest fare, I cooked some bussell sprouts. I crave something green.

jan said...

In movie Life of Pi, I have never seen so many credits. I don't know how they made that movie. It is just a wonder to watch because I kept saying to myself "how did they do that." The movie does keep you on the edge of your seat.

We went to the movie at 12:05 noon. Lots of older adults. It is a cheap time to go. No young people - all adults.

Carol said...

That's when I like to go to the movie Jan, a little after noon I'd say. Nights are for lovers and for me to be on my couch with my feet up, grazing. Grazing is way too expensive at the movies but I do have to have the popcorn and a coke. Ya have to take out a loan to get that. And a little candy, usually, to cut the salty taste of the popcorn. I have all that stuff, plus much more of a variety at home.

I think the price for senior citizen here is the same at night as it is during the day. It's about 5.50. Not bad. I like the big screen but the one's here aren't high definition. The pic seems a little grainy. A HD big screen TV at home has a better pic. Do your movies look HD?

Oh, and I prefer Orville's microwave popcorn to movie theater popcorn. It's crispier and lighter feeling in my mouth. By comparison, I think that movie theater popcorn tastes a little stale.

I stepped out on my porch and heard an owl, real close. I quietly moved around where I could look up and see where it was. It was in a tree, right above my head. It did fly off to join another owl. I wonder what stage in owl union they are in now? Are they looking for a nest area??

I haven't had owl babies in my trees since 2010. I don't think they liked having me living out here. My guys said they saw some owls while they were working.

Carol said...

Jan, you are tougher than I am when it comes to watching movies, I've noticed. You can watch some that I wouldn't have been able to. I don't like violent movies, most espeically gratuitous violence. It there's reference to it but not a lot of having to see it, I can sometimes handle it. I don't want to watch it.

If animals or children are hurt/killed, just hang it up, I won't watch it.

In other ways, you come off as being more vulnerable than I am. That's not true. Being tall, with my gray hair has always been a little intimidating to others, giving me a tougher appearance. It's deceiving. I'm actually very sensitive, more sensitive than the average bear. I just hide it.

Like yesterday, in that email, when you seemed surprised to know that I was afraid when I had to go back to work with students in ICU, after not having worked in that environment for years. Fear can often be a driving force for me. A small amount is what drives us.

When you first went to college, it had been years since you had been in school. I remember that you mentioned being afraid that you would have trouble. It drove you to a Suma Cum Laude. he he he.

I was scared poopless during all my grad school experiences, thinking when will they find out I'm a idiot. I got through 2 grad programs with all As. It was all fear. Fear that made me bust my ass. They didn't give away those grades.

You just can't judge a book by it's cover or it's gray hair and big mouth.

Carol...
I do believe in synchronicity... I just don't make a big deal of it. I used to be active in a New Ager community and belonged to a meditation group for about 5 yrs. But it seemed that so many screwed up people joined who were looking for easy and available answers to their myriad of problems. I got tired of it.

They used to make a big deal about saying they were spiritual beings who chose to have a human experience this time around. One day it hit me... if that's true than why are we obsessing over the spiritual part. I then choose to embrace the human part with all it's laughter, sadness, foibles, etc., etc.

If you feel differently... it's ok by me.

RebelliousRenee said...

And if I didn't make myself clear with that comment. I do feel that those who tried to drown themselves in the spirituality stuff were just looking for a way to avoid having to deal with their problems.

But some of them were so effed up, I kinda didn't blame them.

Carol said...

RR, it may be my nursing background but we were trained to see humans as psycho-social-physiological- spiritual beings I may have left something out. Jan, help.

I think we are all spiritual, we just manifest it differently. Often we try to ignore it and that might be the area that is causing us problems. Just being concerned about those wascally wabbits is one way to manifest it.

jan said...

Looper was terrible. We turned it off midway. Violent and hard to follow story line. Definitely do not recommend it. Crap!

Carol said...

RR, don't have to worry about how you wrote something. I have a talent for reading between the lines and seeing your soul. You have a good one.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan I read The Life of Pi for my book club. I thought it was a very interesting read and it made for a lively discussion.

oooops... our friends have arrived. ... gotta run...

Carol said...

I think that the true socio/psychopath probably doesn't have a spiritual aspect or lost it somewhere??

Carol said...

Nursing has given me the opportunity to come in contact with and study people and cultures very different than my own. I wouldn't change that for anything.
All my career choices, moonlighting jobs really gave me a nice variety. Started as a nurse's aide, the staff nurse in ICU/CCU, assist prof in nursing, race track nurse, rent a nurse in a small community close to the
Gulf, Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Diabetes educator, NP, then years in corrections medicine. I'm sure I forgot some. I studied a wide variety of people and learned so much from all of them. They were all my teachers.

jan said...

Carol, I think you said it very well. You don't need any help from me. I think the whole "bio-psycho-social-spiritual" thing we adopted in nursing is in contrast to the way medicine divides us up as humans. I believe what nursing is doing there is distinguishing what nursing does rather than what medicine does.

Renee, I think when we are younger we express more of the biological and sexual sides of ourselves and as we age and are less hormonal, we begin to realize that we have missed out on finding the spiritual parts of ourselves. In the dream intensives that I am attending, we are studying Carl Jung and his ideas about dreams and spirituality. Most of the people that are involved in this dream work are older -past their 20's and 30's. This movement sure does attract older folks. Most are past the romantic love stages of their lives and many past child rearing too. I think we are all searching for more meaning and purpose in our lives and this is one place to find meaning and purpose.

jan said...

I had meaning and purpose in my work as a nurse and a teacher and in my life with my family/children/child rearing and grandchildren. Now, my parents are dead and my children and grandchildren are moving on with their lives and I find I am not much a part of that.

So now, I must find meaning and purpose in this stage of my life.

I am enjoying my work with families and children and the people I work with are feeding that need for meaning and purpose but I know that will come to an end in the near future.

Many of the friends I have had in earlier times (except you Carol) have moved on in their own lives and we have little in common. I have John and we share a lot in our lives together. But I need more. I am now trying to find meaning just in each day.

I have been think a lot about these things I have shared above but have not put them into words before.

Carol said...

Jan, I left out sexual. Thanks. Wonder why?? Maybe because what I don't use, I lose??

Carol said...

Maggie Smith is on 60 minutes tonight.

jan said...

Even in marriage and a committed relationship, sex plays a lesser role in our lives. Companionship is certainly important now. Hubby and I took on the dream work to find more meaning together as well as individually. We found we did not have any friends that we spend time with and in this dream work we have found more friends with common interests - although all live at a distance. We are hoping to find like-minded folks through beginning some dream groups here in our communities.

jan said...

I had given up on starting a dream group here. I was not that aggressive in putting one together. A couple of weeks ago 2 people I work with asked about our dream work in NC - and in telling them about, one said she had had a dream and wondered what it meant. I told her we are not trained to interpret dreams, only to help a dreamer interpret their own dreams. In the meantime we 3 talked about her dream. To make a long story short- they were both interested in a dream group. This coming thurs we are going to meet at noon to talk about our dreams and 2 more people are joining us. So, did not have to work hard at putting a group together - synchronicity.

jan said...

Carol, Thanks for heads up on 20 minutes - Maggie Smith.

Carol said...

Jan, do you ever consider that dreams connect a person with the collective unconsciousness in addition to the personal unconsciousness? Maybe you have already answered that since Jung is involved.

Carol said...

It's 60 minutes Jan, add 40 minutes.

jan said...

LOL, not good at details Carol.

Yes, Jung talks about the Collective Unconscious and so do many other "Dream" authors. But it was Jung who, I think, coined the term.

jan said...

I am sort of skeptical about the Collective Unconscious. Can we really connect to the consciousness or unconscious of all those dead folks?

jan said...

John calls me Gracie a lot. Do you remember George Burns' wife "Gracie."

Carol said...

Jan, how do you explain children who are prodigies at a very early age. They can do amazing art work, play musical instruments without any training. Do you ever wonder if they are channeling those talents from somewhere else? Maybe some are intune to that collective unconsciousness or something. I sometimes feel that ideas come to me from somewhere elsel, like I wrote about yesterday.

Carol said...

Yes, I remember Gracie and we all are Gracie every now and again.

jan said...

Good question about child prodigies Carol. I have read that we use only a small portion of our brains. We have a 2 1/2 year old in our program -mother is Korean and dad is from U.S. She can read and speak both Korean and English. The child who I taped last year - 7 year old boy who could play piano -anything he heard- from the age of 2 years. I think these children have special brains or are using a part of brain that most of us cannot or do not tap into. Again, I am a skeptic of collective unconscious.

jan said...

Steve's oldest daughter was special at an early age. She talked very early on. Her mom is the one with MS. I used to go get her in the evenings so her mom could get some rest -when lived in LR. I would bring her home, feed her and give her a bath and then take her home to sleep. So many evenings I would sit in the bathroom with her and we would talk. I would sit in a chair and prop my feet up on the edge of the tub. She loved pouring water out of little cups over my feet. One night I thought I heard John comping up the stairs - and I said something. and she asked "did you hear something grandma" I said "no Hunter, it was just my imagination" She asked me "what is imagination" while I was trying to think of how to answer her - she asked "is it something like pretend"
It is unusual for a child that age to connect two different words like that. It takes "abstract thinking" and most people do not do well at abstract thinking until adolescence.

jan said...

She is in college now and studying Chemistry. In her 1st year at college she was hired to be a lab asst to 1st year chem students and she taught the lab. She is doing research with one of her professors and presented her research at the Univ. of Ark a couple of weeks ago and has been invited to present her research in DC in a couple of months.

jan said...

Of course, her mother has been home with her all of her life and read and talked to her. That may have something to do with it.

Carol said...

Maybe I am talking about a Universal Consciousness afterall. Also called the "universal mind."

"It's believed that one has access to all knowledge, known and unknown. Through the Universal Mind, people have access to an infinite power; one then is able to tap into the limitless creativity of the One. All these attributes are present within one at all times in their potential form." Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_mind

I do like that idea and I hope to figure a way to tap into it when I take my watercolor class.

Carol said...

You guys can look at yourselves as having limitations. I know I have many but I would like to see myself as limitless.

jan said...

Good for you Carol.

Funny, right after I wrote that stuff about my granddughter, she called me.

I was mistaken, she is presenting her research at a National chemical Society in New Orleans in April. Her scholarship is paying her way there.

Carol said...

Synchronicity!

jan said...

The collective unconscious is described by Carl Jung as different from the personal unconscious of each of us which is individual.

The collective unconscious collects all the memories, instincts and dreams of all of us in a unique species, through the ages, and is available to us through our unconscious which can be tapped into through our dreams.

jan said...

So the Universal Mind and the Collective Unconscious is thought of in a similar way.

jan said...

I wish I could think of myself as limitless. I think I did think of myself in that way when I was younger, but hard to do that now.

Carol said...

Practice Jan. You certainly won't if you think you can't!

Carol said...

Remember, we aren't getting older, we're getting better!

jan said...

Actually Carol, I see your point. I wrote this long sentence about how I can no longer do many things and realized that, yes I can do most of those things, just maybe not in the same way I used to do them.

jan said...

I am only getting better at knowing what I am capable of doing. I have had many dreams that I did not fulfill, but I did have some that I did fulfill. Those are the important ones and the ones I actively worked on. The others were just fantasy-dreams.

jan said...

OK, I have a question for my female friends here. Does anyone know what a "merken" is? If you go on CNN and pull up the video of Conan when he has Mara Rooney on, you can find out.

Carol said...

I Googled it and found it was a public wig. Now why would someone want that?

jan said...

According to Mara Rooney, it was a wig for her part in a movie. She called it a "furry bikini." Conan's reaction was priceless. She got to keep the wig

Carol said...

Another 2 hour DA. Good. But then...nada for a year.

Carol said...

We all know something that has to happen on DA that none of us are going to be too happy with. Do you know what I'm talking about Jan? Chloe probably already knows what happens if it happens at the end of this season. We might need to get out our hankies.

jan said...

I am already expecting it. I think I know a little hint of what it will be judging from what I heard about 4th season.

I will watch anyway as I am addicted.

jan said...

Gotta get off here for a time. Oldest son and family coming for dinner tonight. Fixing fajitas. Just cooking chick breasts on top of stove. A pretty easy dinner, but lots to do early -lots of slicing and chopping. I just cleaned out fridge. Always do that before having company - ha ha.

See ya later.

Carol said...

Walmart and I'm sure Sams or Cosco have already seasoned and cooked fajita meat, chicken and beef. It's good. I've used it a couple of times.

Carol said...

Then all you need is the other stuff. You can slice onions and bell peppers and saute them and warm up the meat in that. Good. I keep avocados in a flight take off pattern in my frig or on the counter until they reach the perfect stage for use.

Carol said...

I'm watching the rerun of last week's DA. When you get back Jan, I'm trying to think why Ms O'Brien wanted to get Thomas. I know she wants to get rid of Alfred so her nephew can have a better position. Did she have something against Thomas? And I don't know why Thomas would ever take Ms O'Brien's word for anything. They were always partners in their sabotage. And when is Ms O'Brien going to get her karma?? If I were Thomas, I'd ring her scrawny neck.

Carol said...

Watching the show again, I got my answer. My DVR was acting up last week and I missed a few things. I probably could watch each of these shows several more times and see things that I missed.

Carol said...

I missed a lot last week.

Carol said...

Last week's episode was one of the happiest. I want them all to be that way, dang it.

jan said...

too soon old, too late smart. Carol, will have to look for that fajita meat.

Dinner turned out great. I cooked chic in a skillet. Made guacamole and had all the fixings. DIL brought a salad. I made banana pudding for dessert. Everyone's favorite. We all like it warm so I made it after the dinner. Had a good visit with oldest son and DIL after grandsons left. Everyone is gone now and dishes are done. We started at 5 pm - so we could all have an early night home. We all are off tomorrow. Of course John is off every day.

Now for Downton Abbey.

Carol said...

Sounds like dinner was great. You can do the already cooked stuff if you don't want to have to work as hard.

Check in, if you can, after you finish watching DA. Sniff, sniff.

Carol said...

I sure miss having commercials. There's no break to go to the bathroom or grab a snack. Can't avoid either so I just turned it up loud.

It's only 1 1/2 hours tonight.

jan said...

Just finished third season of DA. I was not surprised at what happened as I heard even before the 3rd season began that Matthew would not be in the 4th season. It was like waiting for the inevitable to happen. Still sad. However DA now has a male heir.

jan said...

I will miss Matthew. He is a lovely man - even the actor. Poor Mary.

jan said...

Thanks for tips for fajitas. Bill's sons do not like onions so did not cook them. I will for John and me. We love sauteed onions. I don't know why I have not thought of fajitas for us as a meal. I did saute 3 peppers - red, green and orange. I love those peppers.

jan said...

Thought it was interesting about Thomas. It was nice to see that things turned out well for him and the other young guy and that they will be friends.

Actually, Ms O'brien was ok in this last episode. I liked the way the housekeeper talked to Tom Branson. I guess it will be up to Tom now to help the Earl get the place in a better financial position.

Wonder who the focus of season 4 will be.

jan said...

There have been several interesting documentaries about Lincoln on PBS. Have taped and watched all so far. They are good.

jan said...

Am off tomorrow so would like to go see another movie.

jan said...

At least they will all be able to stay in the mansion now that there will be a male heir.

jan said...

..correction - now that there IS a male heir.

Carol said...

It was a good episode except for the fact that I was anticipating how Matthew was going to get it the entire time. Did you think that maybe he would get shot, or drown while fishing or fall of a cliff. When I saw all those dark clouds, I even thought of lightening. Down this way, it kills more people than any other weather event.

At least Matthew got to see his son born. We should know that Mary couldn't be tied down to a good man. That would never do. I worry about who will take care of Robert. Mary can take care of herself.

So is Tom going to go after the cute maid after she leaves? I wonder how they will feel about a chauffeur who married up, marrying down when his wife dies. The seesaw could make ya dizzy. And remember their role model for tolerance, Matthew, is now gone. Who will be their moral compass from now on, to encourage the other stuffed shirts that life has changed and things are more acceptable.

Tom is good to have on your team but not really a leader in those kinds of things. And it's not good to lose the lawyer in the family, as long as he is a liberal.

Well, at least Edith's married boyfriend, who can never leave his insane wife, won't have Matthew to run him off and maybe Robert and Tom will need him. I wonder if Jimmy will realize that he was in the closet and fall for Thomas.

The thought crossed my mind that grandma Dowager, going thru her second adolescence, might start partying with Lady Rose. Or maybe Tom will fall for Lady Rose.

So many things to ponder until next year.

Carol said...

I was just planning on staying out here at the camp for a couple of days but this morning when I went to feed the kitties, I got my salad stuff to bring here. I decided I'm on vacation. Don't know how long it will last.

Yesterday, when I went home to feed the kitties, the babies were not there. I looked all over. I put out enough food for all of them I went back yesterday evening and still no kitties. Mama bitch was there. I figured something bad had happened. I did circle the yard to look in trees. Remember that when they all disappeared before, they were up in a tree. I was hoping they weren't because there were no more trees that I could cut down.

I thought...well, what God has given, maybe God took back. It's not like I really needed all those kitties. I wasn't having much luck taming them so I could do something with them. I was sad though.

This morning, when I went back to feed, they were all back. They must have gone on an adventure.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with those kitties. It's not like I'm in good enough physical shape to play catch a kitty. On the bright side...I won't have any of those pesky meces(plural of mouse) bothering me.

jan said...

Good to hear your take on DA Carol. It is anyone's guess as to what the next season will be about. I felt the maid came onto Tom. He was friendly but I don't think he was interested. He is probably lonely. Yes, it will be most interesting to see what Rose brings to the family. Maybe Shirley Maclain will return next season.

I thought the little flirtation between the doc and Mrs Crawley was interesting. I thought she was interested in him, but I was wrong. She obviously likes her independence. Sad that she lost her son. Was he her only child? I don't remember another kiddo.

jan said...

The real love story in this series has been between Bates and Anna, not anyone upstairs.

I think Matthew loved Mary more than she loved him. She has been pretty fickle all along. I do believe she loved him this season, but I don't think she will have a problem going on with her life.

jan said...

I think the romance between Edith and the paper editor will be a scandel. We also have the depression in America coming up. I don't know how the depression affected England. Wonder if Shirley Maclaine will be affected by the depression.

jan said...

I think the series has handled the issue between Thomas and the younger guy very well for that time period. It is obvious that Thomas loves the guy. He probably saved his life.

jan said...

Kinda sad, but Robert is so happy at having a male heir. He really has paid little attn to Tom's little girl.

jan said...

Carol, have you been reading about how cats have been affecting the bird population. I would get some of those cats neutered. I have been reading that people with cats as companions need to keep them inside to keep them from killing birds.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan... your comments from yesterday regarding your dreams classes were interesting. Glad you and John are making friends. It's harder to make friends with other couples as we get older. I think we mostly get set in our ways and don't do new things like we did when we were younger... therefore, we don't meet new people as often.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol... I feel for you and your predicament with the kitties. But if you don't do something, they will breed and you will be overrun with feral cats.

If you have some kind of animal control officer around the area, you could get in touch with him or her and see if they can help you. As I said over on TM... I wish you much luck with the situation.

Carol said...

Renee, our animal control won't mess with cats. They will come for a gator or a snake but not a cat. I had a feral cat dying last year in my yard. I was afraid of the cat but one of my nurses at work was nice enough to come help me pick her up and bring her to animal control. She was close to dead and I didn't want her to suffer any more or the ants to get her.

With my broken rib and other mystery pain, I can't make any fast moves or carry anything. I already asked my Vet if he could fix a semi wild cat and he said yes. I'm still working on trying to tame them. I'm making very slow progress.

Renee, so true about making friends as we age. The dream classes in NC have enriched our lives as individuals and as a couple. Would do it again in a minute.

Carol said...

Couples, singles, whatever, it's not easy making new friends when we're older.

Carol said...

And then, as difficult as it is, try finding someone who shares your interests. Forget about it.

Carol said...

I'll never find the two people, who MIGHT be in my community, who share my interests. A very blue girl in a very red city/state.

Yesterday, this land man, who needs to sign my SF's estate for a new lease, called. I kept him on the phone for a while. Guess, he deals with oil, what party do you think he belongs to??? We had a nice political discussion when I asked if their gas exploration involved fracking. He told me that we all had it wrong about that. BTW, it doesn't involve fracking.

He was kinda stuck talking to me. He needs my signature. I'm not proud, whatever I have to use to talk to another human, even a Republican.

jan said...

So true about friends Carol. One reason I keep working is that I really enjoy some of the people I work with and we share the same interests.

I don't try to make friends any longer, I just want to have something interesting to do with my days and feel useful.

Carol,
The problem you're having with the kittens is the same problem I've had over the last few years. We've always been able to trap the kittens, spay and neuter them and then let them out when they're ready.

It's almost impossible to find feral or even semi-feral cats a home. We have fenced in acreage, so they at least have some form of safety and plenty of places to keep dry and warm (barn, under house, sheds, etc.).

Remember I mentioned we've neutered and spayed well over a hundred cats over the years and it's steadily gotten more expensive. But at least then they don't keep multiplying.

The one we're having trouble trapping now is the feral mama cat, or else we could put a stop to this immediately. We haven't given up.

Also, my cats have killed very few birds. The birds are smarter than them, thank goodness.... and we have very high tree's for them to hide their nests. Many birds will leave if they sense danger in the area.

If I do notice one approaching a bird, I clap very loudly. Clapping almost always sends a cat scrambling off (or jetting off :) and the clap also warns the bird.

We've finally worked our way into some form of harmony here. The nights are what scare me most. The nocturnal animals (including raccoons) can and do kill even large cats. I'm afraid to even know what else lurks out there.

The fencing does keep large dogs off the property though, and they are the cats worst enemy, imo.

It's not a perfect situation, but I just don't have lots of choices sometimes. We try our best to keep things in balance. But my heart often breaks when things go wrong.

I think Mary is going to be devastated beyond all belief when she finds out what happened to Mathew (I know I was).

I know I see her differently than some others see her. She was in love with him for a long time before they got together. I realize that practicality often gets in her way, and she was raised to have what to appears to be a snobbish attitude... but I do think she wrestle with the same conflicts we all wrestle with.

What was so heartbreaking about the ending was not only that beautiful baby they had (and that the baby has now lost his father), but also I think they were more in love than ever. He seemed to be the only person who really understood her.... at least she stated that she felt he was the only one who loved her completely in spite of her perceived faults.

I don't remember the exact words, but they did talk about their relationship at great length, I thought.

I was 'shocked' when he died and took it very badly.

Like you mentioned, the segment before last had such a happy ending. I saw the last one early on, and never had an inkling of what was to come. I just sat there looking at the dark TV for quite a while after the shock of what happened. Why?... was all I could think.

And they showed it so graphically... the picture of his corpse under the weight of that vehicle. The realism made it even worse. All I could think of is his goodness and those beautiful blue eyes. And his mother, baby and wife.

Unknown said...

As far as Edith goes, it's nice to see how she's grown and overcome so much in her life.

She's more than a little rebellious (IMO) and seems less restrained by the traditions of the time she lived in. She knows what she wants, and she goes after it.

Good for her.

Unknown said...

Been enjoying the wonderful conversations you and Jan have been having.

I didn't even want to say anything, for fear of disturbing the flow.

Miss hearing from you, Coreen. Hope that you will let us know that things are going well soon.

Unknown said...

I just realized I said 'the traditions of the time' Edith (and Mary, as well as everyone else) lived in. But it was more than tradition. Far worse. Women had so few rights and not just tradition worked against them, but also the law.

It wasn't an easy time to be female. Not even going to get into the whole class struggle thing going on back then.

Carol said...

I do agree that Mary will be devastated. She did love Matthew but how long would that have lasted?? Remember when he was at war and she was hiding in her bedroom praying for his safety. It was probably the only time she ever prayed. I do think she may be afraid to love too much, to give anyone that power over her.

Carol said...

I betcha there is one man who wishes he didn't have a gun in his house.....Oscar Pistorius. What is sad shame! So much notorious gun violence lately. So many wasted lives.

Some are trying to give a motive to Adam Lanza. That he was trying to compete with another killer, the one in Norway. That's so much bull. The Connecticut police said there's no evidence for that. He snapped and we will not know what was going on in his sick mind.

Watching killing of Lincoln on PBS.

Carol said...

When you get the Networks over the air, which I have an antenna to do for Fox, you get 2-3 channels for each. PBS, which is LPB here, has 3 channels. PBS1 is what you get on cable or satellite, PBS 2 is a kiddy channel, and PBS 3 is Create TV. It has travel, like Rick Steve's Europe, painting, crafts, cooking, etc. I love that channel but don't often look to see what's on. Before I had my dish moved out here, I watched it all the time.

Right now it's: Joseph Rosendo's Travelscope: A Mediterranean cruise stops in Venice, Croatia, Malta. It's almost as good as going.

Chloe, absolutely true that the early 1900's and before that were not good times to be a woman. What the h*** happened to make it this way. Why did not the queens of England do something to make some changes. Maybe their hands were tied too.

jan said...

Chloe, did you know that Matthew would not be back in season 4. I was reading today that Julian Fellowes said that if the actor was leaving who was downstairs, it would be easy to explain their absence but when an actor played a family member the only way to take them out of the cast was for them to die. People would not accept a different actor in the next season for that family member.

jan said...

Chloe, sorry that Matthew's death was a shock.

jan said...

Julian Fellowes also said that in the U.S. when an actor would sign on for a series, it would be for 6-7 years but in England, it was only 3 years.

Carol... I hope you aren't letting your political views get in the way of finding friends. I have several friends that are big time Republicans. One is a gun collector with her husband and the other is a Catholic and very active in her church. They both know we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but don't let it get in the way of our friendship. They both have huge hearts, and for me, that is what counts most... I value them.

Chloe... hats off to you and Glen both for taking care of all those animals and the raising of your granddaughter.

Carol said...

Heck no Renee. I just avoid the subject, most of the time. Most of the people who I had in my life were from work. They all had busy lives, families and work kept us connected. I still, very occasionally, see them but it really doesn't meet the objective of friendship. I have a high standard for what qualifies for being a friend and it requires almost daily communication. Ask Jan.

Many of these people would actually qualify as leaning liberal but would NEVER admit it. I know their hearts. But liberal is not compatable with a pleasant existance in this area. It's like they open their mouths and " the right" talking points fall out. Those talking points aren't even making a pass thru their brains.

Carol, Have not seen anything like Create TV here

Carol said...

Do you have anyway to get the local channels over the air, like a little antenna? I have an antenna attached to one of the input sources on the back of my TV. I have to do that to get Fox. Dish here does not include Fox. Those antennas are very cheap. The cheap one's have worked better than the more expensive ones. Many of the local Network channels have more than one channel, at least 2-3. Before I had my dish relocated here, that's all I had was locals. I didn't seem to have any trouble finding something to watch and I only had about 10 or so choices. Most of the time it was one of the PBS channels I watched, usually Create TV.

You will also need to have a digital TV also. You would really like that Create Tv. It's PBS 3 but like I said, I don't think they include it on any commerical TV packages. Maybe??

Carol said...

In a big city like where you live, you probably have many more local, over the air, choices. My CBS and ABC are in Lafayette. I can only get ABC. Only NBC, PBS and Fox are here in town.

Carol said...

When I come out here, I carry my bedroom receiver with me. It's not a DVR so I can't pause, rewind, record, etc. I could carry my DVR but that's way too much trouble to diconnect it.

Carol said...

One of my neighbors who lives out here just gave up his satelitte programming and put up an antenna. He says he finds plenty to watch. I think that most of it is on one of the PBS channels. I'm not sure I watch enough on my satellite to make mine worthwhile. I do like my court stuff.

http://www.newmexicopbs.org/schedule/

There's an interesting program on for both of us tonight called After Newtown: Guns in America. I plan to check it out. 8p your time. You guys have 4 over air channels. One is in Spanish.

For anyone else, just Google your state and PBS. and put in schedule

Carol said...

Also C2C has an interesting program on tonight:

Accounts of Heaven

"Reverend John W. Price (book link) has been a priest of the Episcopal Church since 1965. He serves as a spiritual director and is also a member of the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation. After hearing over two hundred accounts of near-death experiences, Rev. Price will discuss how these experiences of Heaven correlate with religious teachings"

You can listen if you have a radio that gets AM. C2C is on KIVA-AM 1600 in Albuquerque
It starts at 11P. Since I have a subscription, I can listen anytime, at the time or after it airs.

Carol said...

You have to be a night owl to listen to C2C. A lot of his listeners are truck drivers, people with insomnia and people in jail/prison.

Right now, besides pecking at the work I need to do out here, I'm listening to the trial of Jodi Arias. She will be back on the stand today. The judge was sick for several days. She has been on the stand for days but hasn't even gotten to the day she killed her lover. I think that today might be the day.

Today is going to be an exciting TV viewing day for me.

Carol said...

Pistoris said he thought there was an intruder in his bathroom when he shot his girlfriend 3 times through the door. He shot through the door 4 times and hit her 3 times. Yeah, like you'd think there was an intruder in your bathroom when you have company over, without being damned sure.

Remember, I had someone banging on my backdoor that wouldn't even answer when I yelled..who is there. I didn't shoot through the back door. And I am a woman, alone in the house. You know if he asked, she would have said..it's me honey. That story wouldn't hold water if he used Flexseal on it.

Interesting that she was a spokensperson for battered women. I wonder if he had a history of being abusive? Anyone know?

The fact that they are going to charge him with first degree murder must indicate that that was pretty obvious. I still have trouble understanding how people can snap like that and totally destroy their own lives, much less murder someone, someone they loved.

An ER doc who had dealings with the Sandy Hook children who were killed was on Piers last night. I didn't watch much, too stressful. He looked like he was close to crying. He repeated the statistics that a person is 4 times as likely to die by their own home gun than ever use it to protect themselves.

I wish anyone who thinks nothing should be done to change these gun laws would have had to look at those children who were slaughtered. I wonder if that would change their minds. People have such a highly developed use of the defense mechanism of DENIAL or they have no conscience.

Carol said...

We just never can really know who we live with, who we love, or even who we are. It can all change in a snap.

Some people give warning signs, but many do not until it's too late. I keep my eyes on Maggie..but she's given me a few warnings. She growled at me a few times especially when big sis was here.

Carol said...

In all my years in health care I've taken care of GSWs but only once had to deal with someone who was killed by a gun. We were attempting to resuscitate this woman even though it was way too late. She was a mom, who stepped in between two of her own children, who were fighting.

Until I made peace with death, I tried to avoid it like the plague. Strange for a nurse. I had no problems as long as there was a hint of a pulse but was ready to run like hell when all was gone. I wasn't very successful doing that but sure wanted to. Didn't even do funerals very well. Had anxiety attacks.

For a while now I've been comfortable with death even holding someone's hand when they died. Have even looked up and waved when they passed just in case they could still see me. It's terribly hard to do when it's someone I know and love.

Carol said...

They keep repeating the same old bullshit about Lanza that he was competing with that Norway killer. The Connecticut police tried to stop that but, without even working at it, I've seen several reports of that from different new's sources. That's what our news is these days, mostly BS. Why don't these new's sources vet these stories before repeating them over and over and over.

"This is not official Connecticut State Police information and is someone's speculation regarding the case," Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance told Reuters in an email statement."

Renee,

I saw the post you left here the other day about belonging to a new age meditation group for a few years. I've gone through different stages of thought throughout my life, and I've always tried to immerse myself completely into them for a while, in order to give them my unbiased consideration and judgement. Then eventually, I usually come back somewhere in the middle.

Regarding this:
"They used to make a big deal about saying they were spiritual beings who chose to have a human experience this time around. One day it hit me... if that's true than why are we obsessing over the spiritual part...."

I just love the way you worded this: "One day it hit me... if that's true than why are we obsessing over the spiritual part. I then choose to embrace the human part with all it's laughter, sadness, foibles, etc., etc."

I agree. Embracing the 'human part' just seems to be the point of being here in the first place.
... but you said it so well.

Unknown said...

Thank you for linking those articles today, Coreen.

I've watched so many period movies in the past, but a lot more lately. They didn't teach me anything I didn't already know, at least theoretically..... but they did make it clearer to me; made me appreciate even more that a lot of women have suffered and fought to get us to the place we are today.

Unknown said...

I also loved reading that interview on the realities of creating Downton Abbey too (you can always count on the N.Y. Times). The writer is so realistic and aware of the history of the time he writes about. I guess he'd have to be a bit of a historian in order to present those different personalities in the light of what was happening at the time. You certainly can't judge the characters by today's standards.

Anyway, it was a very interesting article to read, and Julian Fellowes a very likable person.

Carol said...

Frontline is even more interesting.

We went to see Silver Linings Playbook yesterday. A very interesting movie. The first part was so extreme and stressful. But it changed about halfway through. My oldest son and his wife saw it a week ago and did not like it. John and I liked it a lot. So I guess it depends on how we each perceive the movie and the characters.

Carol said...

I didn't realize Silver Linings was a stressful movie Jan. You're the first one to mention that. I'm really wanting to see it. When I was more up to going to the movies, it wouldn't come here. It finally did, not long ago. I just looked and it is still here. If I want to see it anytime soon I guess I'll have to go to the movies.

Carol said...

I watched that PBS show on guns. It was a history of guns in American and pretty interesting. I'm not for getting rid of guns altogether. I am for trying to fix the law to make them as safe as we can. We have to try to do something. We just can't throw up our hands and say, nothing will work.

Frontline had a program on after that show that was about Adam Lanza and his family. Two reporter from the Hartford Current "...looks for answers to the central-and so far elusive-question: who was Adam Lanza" They did a good job and it wasn't easy to find any answers. It sure made me have sympathy for mama Lanza. There was certainly nothing about Adam trying to see if he could outdo that Norway killer.

PBS is such a good Network. If I had to dump everything and just keep one station, it would be PBS. I need to send my donation this year. They need our help. They are probably the most responsible programming of all TV and the Republican't want to do away with them. I'm sure they do.

Carol said...

I fell asleep early tonight. Woke up around 2. That's been a trend. I don't care and I kinda like 2 am. Good time to ponder. I can certainly sleep anytime I want to now. I just haven't wanted to.

Now, I want to listen to my C2C program on Heaven, and the afterlife. No real rush, I can hear it anytime with my subscription to the show. It's that very kind of information that helped me make peace with death. I started reading about it years ago. I can't say that I'm going to be real comfortable with the trip, but I am with the destination. I've gone to that near death research foundation site. It's fascinating. They collect lots of personal stories about near death experiences. They are all similar, no matter what the age of the person, religion or no religion, etc, the stories are all similar.

C2C has stories and news that the MSM doesn't have for weeks, months or years but many do finally get to them. No, not the chupacabra stories, however you spell that, or ghost stories, but some of them.

I thought that you might be interested in that show Jan. The guy speaking is an Episcopal priest. Isn't John an Episcopal minister?

Carol said...

Something Julian Fellowes said in that interview about his involvement in DA that was sooo significant is

Isn't that sooo true.

Carol said...

I watched most of the Jodi Arias trial today. I certainly wasn't sitting the entire time. It's sooo slow, slower than a baseball game. She finally got to the day of the murder, after about three weeks of testimony and the trial ended today, at the climax, moments before it took place. HLN/Tru TV couldn't have planned it better to keep us coming back. This girl has been in jail for 4 years working on this story and it is strangely unique. I've never heard anything like it. What do I think...I think there is truth weaved in with lies. She's brilliant, and that is the case with so many murders unfortunately. I definitely think she was provoked by her boyfriend, he took advantage of her addiction/obsession with him. She would do whatever degrading thing he wanted and he rubbed her face into it. Makes 50 shades look like elementary school stuff. But it didn't come close to warranting a murder. Men need to realize that these pretty women are very capable of some serious evil. They want to keep playing them, using and abusing them and one day...surprise, your dead!

It looks like rain here, and that may be my only chance of seeing the rising of sunshine today (it's going to be a 'little' cooler too).

From what I've read, the people way up north haven't had a lot of sun for much of the winter. I haven't missed the normal amount of cold this year, that's for sure.

Unknown said...

Jan, I guess that movie (Silver Linings) isn't for everyone.

To me, the whole movie was so upliftng. To be able to take something with such a serious subject matter and bring out the humor in it... the way we all take ourselves and concerns so seriously.

I put it up there with 'As good as it gets', the Jack Nicholson... Diane Keaton movie (which won an Academy Award. They both found humor where you'd think there'd be none. And they both found light at the end of the tunnel.

Julia Roberts 'Pretty Woman' had originally started out as a very dark story too. But the director, Garry Marshall, was able to make it a comedy also. I think that takes a real talent: finding humor in things that are usually so serious. Puts things into perspective for me.

My very first nursing job was in ICU/CCU. It was the very first intensive care unit in that hospital, in our community. The other nurses and I opened that unit. So often, I was on the front lines of the new stuff going on in nursing, at least in my community. And like any other front lines, if there were bullets flying, I got hit. I have lots of scars to show it.

Well, back then if there was a code blue, we took care of it. Now, the ER docs often respond and run the show. They were no such things as ER docs back in those days. If a doc happened to be in the hospital, he/she would respond but most often didn't have a clue what to do. We were trained. In fact one day a doc responded and asked if we announced "cold and blue" over the intercom. I said, well, that's close and it is the case.

If a doc did respond, I usually had to push them outta my way because they didn't know how to handle a code.

This was back in 1972-1974. I was involved in many resuscitations during my time there. Some were successful, some were not. For years I got this annual phone call, at home, from a man that I successfully resuscitated. He just called to chat. Haven't heard from him in several years. He wasn't young back then. He did have one of those nde's. I got a big kick outta talking to him.

That was a very stressful place to work and I brought it home with me every day. I played the tapes of the day's activities over and over, to see if I could have done anything better. Jan had been trying to talk me into trying out being a clinical instructor at the University. Before I lost what was left of my mind, I finally took her up on that suggestion. You know the rest of the story.

Carol... I am a spiritual person... but I'm no longer searching. For me the answer is to just simply live one's life. I really love a quote from Thoreau.... I'm paraphrasing... "I have no quarrel with God, it's religion I don't see eye to eye with".

Totally agree with ya Renee. That's why I go to the church of the big river. Hey, I hang out here. Can't get any closer to God.

When I attended church in the last 20 years of so, it was to spend time with my mom or stepfather. It made my SF happy and that made me happy.

Carol...
Rick and I love to go to Easter Service at a ski area in the northern part of our state. It's a sunrise service on the top of Loon Mt. We have to get to the area at 5am to take the gondola up to the top. Once there, the minister does a non-denominational service... all are welcome. He plays the guitar and tells jokes. Then we all watch in awe as the sun rises between 2 mountain peaks in the distance.

It's the only time I go to "church".... except for a wedding or a funeral.

I worked hard to get my SF's approval. Not with the church stuff but mainly with hard work. He was old school and he didn't really respect too many women but he did respect me. I tried very hard to earn it. He didn't even respect most men.

We did have our conflicts with politics though. He was a Repub. Couldn't convince him just how against his own interest that was. It's like it's in the DNA around these parts. They can't even help it. He'd play Rush L. for his cows. It seemed to help them gain weight. And they put out more than their fair share of manure. I guess BS begets BS. LOL.

Sounds like a most beautiful service Renee. I'd love it.

I wish I could find a fishing church.

Jan or Coreen, we're almost out of room. Why don't one of you put up some of your sewing artwork. Maybe you can both do it on one post. If OK with y'all I can share one of your email addresses with the other. You can show Renee what you've done. You could use pics you already have. Maybe even Renee can send some of her artwork also. That would be real neat.

Coreen, thank God they didn't have a gun in the house!

The minister said that one thing that was universal in the near death experiences is the intense feeling of love they all experienced on the other side. That is how they experienced God. They said no human language can even describe it.

He said that suicide was a collasial no no. When people committed suicide they ended up still aware of the same pain that made them do it.

When I dealth with inmates who I thought might be contemplating suicide, I shared that possibility with them. It's something that I've often pondered. I told them that it was very possible that they would get stuck being unable to move past that misery, but in continuing to live, they will usually, with time, be able to move past that feeling. Why risk it!

Carol, I agree.
The problem with depression, is that when one is under it's influence they don't think it will ever get better. Not an easy place to be.

It always comes back to understanding how important 'hope' is. The struggle is holding onto hope when things around us seem to be falling apart. Or, like that feeling you described having: (paraphrasing, please correct me if I'm wrong)... 'feeling like the world had moved on and left you behind'.

Sometimes, I actually enjoy a feeling of being left behind. That's how I clear my mind reboot. Sometimes it's fast... other times it takes long.

Glen emailed me an article I want to link here (it's actually sort of humorous). I'm going to go see if I got it yet.

Coreen, the classic domestic violence situation in my experience is that the perpetrator beats the woman over and over until she decides to leave. Then he comes after her with a gun. Several scenarios come to mind. He shoots her and then turns the gun on himself or there is a standoff with police. At least that is what often happens in the states I have lived in. It is seldom true that she hits him back.
