Random pictures

I need pictures to look at, so I went through my gallery and picked out some scenic pictures at random.  Not any are brand new. They are some oldies but goodies.

1st pic is across the street. I need to give these people who living in this house all the pics I have of their house, and they are plenty

jan said...

2nd pic is crossing the bridge from Tennessee into Arkansas in Memphis.

jan said...

3rd picture is same house across the street. Could not resist this rainbow.

jan said...

4th picture is driving on Paseo del Norte highway from the west mesa of Alb. looking at the Sandia mountains in the east.

Jan, I love the pictures. It's been so warm here this year that it's good to see the one with the snow and that gorgeous blue hue like the one with the rainbow.

My favorite is that bridge with the great big Arkansas sign. Great picture!

All of them are.
Glad I popped in on my way to watch some TV.

See you all tomorrow.

ps Glad to see you feeling better, Jan. The day off must of been what you needed.

Carol said...

Thanks Jan for the rescue. They are neat pics.

Coreen said...

Nice work Jan...was just about to search through mine...

love the rainbow...keep hoping to catch one here, but can't remember the last time I even saw a rainbow...

Never realized that Memphis is close to the Ark border...do you know what 'the natural state' means?...

CT is called the Constitution State & once upon a time the Nutmeg State...

Can't see the mountains too well, are those the 'watermelon' ones...

I have pics of neighbors homes too, when I take them I hope they
don't think I'm spying....

Carol said...

We'll all be keeping a close eye on your neck of the woods Coreen. Hope you got stocked up with all the necessities. Even in good weather I have a hard time keeping stocked up. Now I have 2 places to keep stocked up.

Unknown said...

Just saw where you posted that the fourth one was from your area too.

Beautiful.

Unknown said...

... ditto on what Carol said Coreen. Let us know what happens with the weather. Hope you don't get hit too hard.

Coreen said...

Looks like there is no escaping the
storm...every newscast just keeps getting worse...uping the snowfall totals...latest is 20" & not a flake has fallen yet...& the other end of the state even higher projections...

comparing it to the blizzard of 1978 when gov. ella grasso (god bless her she was the best) ordered the state's roads closed...

Chloe, we will have plenty of snow to spare in about 24 hours!...

As far as groceries, we are good til next week, but was told this a.m. some of the stores were out of milk, bread, eggs...& very busy...the usual runup...

Carol said...

Have you heard anything about your bud Geoff lately. Has he found another job? Does he still have a wife?

Carol said...

I wonder what Chloe found to watch. I'm going to have to go to Netflix and I usually don't have to do that until late. Can't even watch HLN about the trial today since nothing happened. They are in secret meetings. Don't know why, it's a secret. I'm watcing The Big Bang. Paused it a dozen times just to stretch it.

Coreen said...

Geoff is back talking on FB & writing his blog...still married, no job...all his fans are glad he's back giving reports, even if not on tv...
Friday Saturday's storm looks awful

Carol said...

I still have that blog bookmarked but didn't know he was still doing it. Hope he finds a job soon. I think they were a little harsh on him.

Carol said...

Hope you can keep in touch. Did you figure out how to keep Internet when you are on generator power? Wasn't that a problem before?

Carol said...

There are a lot of different models for that storm with a wide range of possibilities. They are calling that storm Nemo. Glad you changed you handle Chloe, especially if that storm turns out to be bad.

Carol said...

Yes Coreen, as you mentioned earlier I wouldn't be selected for a death penalty trial. I couldn't be responsible for sentencing someone to death. Couldn't live with having to make that decision. I wonder if some of the people who think they actually could, when it comes down to the wire, really can. They may find some little reason not to. I think CA got off because they went for the death penalty.

They have had this woman on the stand now for three days, giving testimony that really is irrelevant to the case, interesting but irrelevant. She certainly doesn't look like a cold blooded killer. I think one of the defense's strategies is to let the jury get to know her. I think they figure that if they do, they will be less likely to kill her. We'll see if that will work out for them. Since it is a death penalty case, the judge is more lenient with that strategy.

I also think that a defendant's age, sex, looks, etc can make a difference in how likely a juror will be to sentence them to death.

Something that surprised me working at the joint is, how many fairly attractive women were in for some really evil acts, many involving their own children. Certainly couldn't look at them and tell.

With this armed cop/military man on the loose, we are starting to see just how safe a good guy with a gun can be, Mr LaPierre. This is a stressful world. There is the potential for many with PTSD out there. We can never tell who the good guys are anymore. Any one of those owners of dangerous guns could one day turn from good guy to bad guy. Anyone in their families can. Anyone who drops in to visit can.

Anyone know what kind of arsenal that dude has?

Maybe this incident is another little message to the police and the rest of us. Having an enemy out there that could be armed with lots of firepower and coming after you guys is not a good thing. I find it more than just a coincidence, all the signs that we have seen lately. Actually these aren't just little signs, they are flashing neon lights.

Carol said...

With all these people with high fire power out there..we may lose all the rest of out constitutional rights.

Carol said...

I wonder if Craig is a little concerned with TM's continuing to go down. He may end up losing some of his lurkers. There's a couple of old adage's that may apply. Either "absence makes the heart grow fonder"...or "out of sight, out of mind". I think that he may have tried to add too many fancy things to his blog. The more technology that you have involved, the more that can go wrong.

Our little simple, low tech blog has been pretty reliable. We did have those problems way back but, knock on wood, we haven't had any in a long while.

Carol said...

Watching the weather channel Chloe, I see that we have some potentially nasty weather coming on Sunday. There's a Torcon 5 potential for tornadoes that includes the both of us, I think.

I'm not exactly sure where you are Chloe. How far from Houston are you? I think you are north of Houston. Is that correct.

Carol said...

There are several at TM who will also be in this Nemo storm's way right? RR lives in NH or Mass? Old Sea on the coast around Martha's Vineyard? Don't know where in Maine Nash is. Who else is from up that way?

We definitely have a lot of drops on our, Who's Amung Us, map from up that way. Our visitors span the globe. And not all visitors will show up on the map. I never do and I find that weird. It will say 0 visitors and I'm here, waving.

I'm awake early every morning. I sometimes do get a nap. Sometimes I fall back to sleep, sometimes not. I've been spending most of the day out at the camp. I have multiple projects in the works, a person with ADD dream. When I get bored of one, I just move to another.

I used to use this old pack camping picnic table for my cooking table. I had a neat table cover over it so it was not obvious what it was. It was in an area where a stove would be. My coffee pots, and my most frequently used stew pot, stayed there.

I wanted to replace that with something else. I looked at the hardware stores. What I found there was expensive and not what I wanted. Surfing, I found something at Target. I had one of my guys put it together. I usually do those kinds of things myself but I was not up to it at the time I got it.

Carol said...

My cart has a butcher block top but it needed more protection on it than it had. All the cooking I will do on it and spilling would rapidly stain it. I got some polyurethane yesterday to put on it. I got one coat on yesterday but it will need many more. Need 4 hours between coats. I might get 2 more in tomorrow. I'm also doing some painting touch ups.

What's nice about that cart is that it has two drawers and two cabinets to put my more frequently used cooking appliances/tools in.

Carol said...

Coreen, I see that the snow has already started?? Can't always trust my WU.

Did you stock up on some junk food? Do you do any junk food? If so, what is your fav junk food?

Jan, you probably aren't a big junk food junkie. Do you have any fav junk food? I'll guess a little chocolate and occasional ice cream.

Now Chloe, I think that you might be more like myself. I feel that you might like junk food also. What is your fav junk food? I told ya'll what mind was. My choices do change from time to time.

Unknown said...

Nice kitchen island, Carol. You sound like you work like a chef. I used to enjoy cooking (never loved it) and would do a lot more of it now if necessary, but we eat out more and when we cook, hubby helps or does most of it sometimes.

I seem to have a knack of doing things the easy way. Emma loves fruits and vegetables... thrives on them. That makes it easy with all the steamer vegetables they have now (which are very delicious, unlike the old days) and she and I love to eat fruit. She likes chicken and fish, but the only meat she seems to like is some pork and the beef on the burgers at 5 guys. I like grilled meat, but she doesn't like any of that charbroiled flavor that I like. Nor does she care for breaded or fried (except at Chick' filet and I think that's mostly because of the play area).
We like breads and cereals in the mornings (Kroger has a special 9 grain multi-seeded bread that is a must have daily in our house). She has lunch at preschool (except for weekends) and dinner is usually simple and nutrient filled (for her, at least).

I try to keep my junk food junkie problem under control. I know it's bad, and like to keep my weight low (I feel better). But still, I manage to have more sugar than I should every day, and we're not fanatical about much of anything.

Unknown said...

As for what my favorite junk foods are, there are many and varied, and change periodically.

Not much I don't like in the junk food department.

Unknown said...

I'm hoping to hear from you too, Coreen. I think I do remember you losing your computer connection when you lost power last time. Hope you're generator is up and ready to go.

We've never had a hurricane on our property yet, but have had lightning strike a nearby tree (that has lived even though it's been struck several times, even causing a split once).

We could get a hurricane though, and there have been some nearby. They've removed lots of tree to build (and I think the trees have what slow the hurricanes down), so we have more of a chance now.

Winds can cause damage when a bad storms passes through, but all and all we've been really lucky (knock on wood). And we're high and dry, with a sandy soil. So water tends to sink quickly.

I didn't think about your possible river problems when I mentioned liking the rain we were getting. Hope things are under control at your camp too, Carol. I agree with what you said, I think you get more rain than we do where we are. We were in desperate need.

We're about 45 miles nw of Houston, Carol... Magnolia. Always loved the name of the city: Magnolia, Tx. It was so much smaller when we moved here, but now has almost completely filled in-in ever direction. We normal go toward The Woodlands (where that beautiful mall is and many restaurants and theaters are), but don't have to go all the way there anymore, because there's so much that has built up in between.

I have what I jokingly call my 'safety zone', which is the boundaries in which I regularly travel in every direction. There is very little crime and you could leave your car unlocked and nothing would be stolen. It's about 25 miles any direction I want to go: north, south, east and west. And there's almost nothing I can't find (that's worth finding) beyond that.

When it's necessary to go much further, then I often need to use my GPS (over about 40 miles or so) and then I know I'm out of my zone, and need to lock my car and put up with a lot more traffic, etc. I feel so safe where we live, and there's always so many police officers controlling the traffic, schools and streets, etc. Didn't use to appreciate that as much, but now I do. I just have to make sure I drive the speed limit. :)

Hubby's work is almost all outside my safety zone, mostly almost to Houston, in Houston and further. Therefore, he mostly goes south to southeast. That where the population really explodes, and therefore most of our work is there. He's knows several counties, including the huge Harris county, like the back of his hand... but it wasn't easy when we first got here and there was only a Thomas Guide book. GPS has made getting around anyplace so much easier... even helps avoid the worst of the traffic (usually, but not always).

The traffic is why I stay closer to home.

"I wonder what Chloe found to watch."

I finished Downton Abbey, Carol. Once I got to the DVD part (season 3) I couldn't stop.

I loved it, but was not happy at the end. Now all I can do is wait for Season 4.

I'm hooked.

Coreen said...

Not much to report...it started to snow about 7 a.m., but light fine snow, there's about 1" now, roads
are snow covered, got the papers, fed the birds, hopefully will be able to feed them again early afternoon, since no idea what will happen tonite when the bulk of the snow will fall...

Everyone I care about is at home today, we all did what we had to yesterday & now have to wait it out...

Hopefully the generator will work
as it should, if needed (no reason to think it won't, but just never know, hoping that no one loses power at all)...

So far the few times the power went out & the generator started, I lost cable TV, but the computer stayed on because my internet comes through AT&T main phone line (I still have land lines as well)...tv does not come on until the power goes on....

Coreen said...

Junk food...I like milk chocolate, not dark chocolate at all...if I remember Carol, you like dark chocolate...

only Lay's potato chips, but not often, french fries, chocolate milk shakes (but not those thick things they sell at some fast food places-yuck!)...

once in awhile, nuke a bag of orville's regular popcorn, but again not often...

Don't know why, but snacking on walnuts lately, do they count as junk food...and I drink a lot of milk, the real deal, not the 1% or 2%!...

Fruit, right now apples in my salad, summer its usually strawberries...

Carol said...

Coreen, It might be a time to try that free month of Netflix. LOL. I'm watching thisi little crime series with this blond hunk. I know you'd like that one. It's mindless entertainment. You do have lots of choices.

Sitting out on my deck at the camp. Just put a other coat of polyurethane on my butcher block top. Can do another in 4 hours. I want it shiny.

Coreen said...

Isn't it nice to have someone put things together for you Carol...makes it a lot easier!...

Are you planning to start staying at the river again soon...

Carol said...

Coreen, walnuts have omega 3, good for joint inflammation. I'm on my third bag.

I like Lays also but has to be the plain wavy chips. I'm off and on with the chips. Right now...on own.

I like the dark choc because it's healthier.

Coreen said...

Crime series?...blond guy? what is it...

unless netflix creates its own programing wouldn't most of what is offered have been on tv at some point & aren't the movies those that come out in dvd after the 1st theatre run, the same time they show up on cable on demand for a few $$$?...

Carol said...

Coreen, you'd have to ask Chloe. I haven't seen much of any of the series on Netflix. I'm watching this one called Glades. I'll be sorry when I see them all. I like the main character. You get a free month. If you don't like it, you cancel it.

Carol said...

They are starting to have their own original series. I like that House of Cards with Kevin Spacey.

Carol said...

Coreen, they are delivering my furniture tomorrow. Then I'll have my recliner/bed here. Well have to see what the weather brings. I won't do any tornado watch weather out here. I still don't have the shower but I can run home for that.

jan said...

Interesting reading since I was on here yesterday. Enjoyed it.

I do eat junk food Carol. You overestimate me. I do try to heat healthy but I love junk food and do eat it.

I seldom eat red meat. I eat chicken but not much fish. We don't get fresh fish here. I eat healthy for breakfast and lunch. I don't cook much. We got takee outee from Panda Express last night. I love their walnut shrimp. I am sure it is not healthy. I like their noodles. We usually make 2 meals out of one takee outee.

jan said...

I love apple pie - heated with some half and half poured over it. That is my fav junk food. Sometimes when working I will stop and have an ice cream for lunch and other times I will get a cream filled donut for a snack. I try not to do that often but those are my fav junk foods. I don't eat chips or candy except on occasion.

Carol said...

I can almost make one takee outee last a week but the fried rice gets dried out.

Carol said...

I'm happy to hear that you aren't perfect Jan.

jan said...

I eat nuts often. I have chopped pecans or walnuts over my oatmeal. We keep raw almonds for a snack too. I have been eating greek yoghurt for lunch of breakfast - when working or in a hurry.

I was able to get my blood sugar lowered by eating oatmeal (the old fashioned kind) for breakfast. If I don't have time to make my oatmeal, I eat a hi fiber cereal. I use soy milk for cereal and my tea in the morning. I am lactose intolerant. I used to love 1% milk to drink and 2% over cereal, but had to give it up.

Carol said...

I used to be able to eat large quantities at one time but now I get full with a small serving but I graze all day and night. Kinda like a cow. Kinda starting to look like one also.

jan said...

We get our dinner meals from Costco or from Smith's deli. Once in a while I cook, but not often. Working 20 hrs a week just does not leave much time for it and too weary when get home in evening or I want to do something else.

Carol said...

I'm lactose intolerant also but I buy that Lactaid milk or the Walmart equivilent. I mainly use it in my coffee.

I like cheese also. I like the pepper jack on wheat thins. I also keep roasted salted almonds in stock. Dang, I'm getting hungry. I bought a Walmart pep pizza yesterday.

jan said...

Cannot imagine you eating like a cow.

I used to want to be perfect. The more perfect we try to be, I think, the further we get from our ideal.

My dad used to say "too soon old, too late smart. " I love his old sayings now.

jan said...

I bet Chloe is the one who eats the healthiest among us.

Carol said...

That posted before I was finished typing. I get the medium pizza, add more pizza sauce, some chopped green olives, maybe some chopped jalopenias. I only cook half of it. I usually can't even finish half of the medium until hours later.

jan said...

I could eat large quantities when younger too. Not any longer. I guess that is a good thing too.

Carol said...

My bet Jan is...that Chloe is just as bad as the rest of us. She said she eats out a lot. I would eat out more but I like my cooking better. I can't do fast food burgers. yuk. I can do a good burger from a ma and pa burger place.

jan said...

Carol, you sound much happier now that you are out at your camp.

Chloe, when my children were home I ate healthier - I was busier so got more exercise and never had a problem with weight. My problem now is that I watch too much TV at night and am not more active then.

Carol said...

Jan, I remember when I went to eat at your house. Your entire family ate what I could eat by myself. Those were to good old days.

I'd go the Lynn W's house and she's put a salad down in front of me that I thought was for her entire family. It was just for me. It was a serving bowl! Probably why she was sooo large. She's still kicking and still fat. LOL

jan said...

When I was single, I did not stay home at night. I went out and walked or went swimming or to visit friends. I watched little to no TV and never had to watch my weight. I did not eat that healthy as I ate a lot of fast foods.

Carol, you have always been good at cooking for yourself. Not me though.

jan said...

Coreen, hope the predicted storm coming your way is not bad. Sounds like you are prepared.

Carol said...

I've had friends, from work, come over and open my frig just to laugh. It looks like I should have a large family living with me. I musta been hungry in my last life.

Carol said...

I'm very happy to be back at the camp and be able to look out at my river. It's not even so bad going home at night since I can't see the river at night.

I'm also happy that my pain level is back to the usual, something I can tolerate. I don't even mind sleeping in a recliner. Keeps my stomach contents down.

jan said...

I think a little fat as we get older is ok. A lot depends on our genes. I do believe that obesity contributes to an earlier death.

Carol said...

If you're wondering, I'm still working. I get up and do something and then come back to the couch. I put a coat on my butcher block and did some sheetrock repair, places the guys knocked some dents in. I've gotten pretty good at sheetrock repair. I still have some boxes to unload but have to ponder if I really need some of that stuff.

jan said...

Carol, I believe your being more content/happy is affecting your pain level. I think the camp is where you are meant to live.

jan said...

I look around here and there is so much we do not need. I want to do some major clearing out soon.

Carol said...

They just reported that we need a little extra fat when we're older. I'm complaint with that order.

Carol said...

And Maggie usually shares most of the things I eat. She doesn't like seafood except she does like those spicy salmon filets I get a Sam's as long as it doesn't have any of that gray stuff or skin on it. Neither of us like that part and I cut it off. I thought that I might be able to give that part to her. She spit it out and looked me like I was crazy.

Carol said...

She loves when I do my lemon chicken or chicken wings. She likes spicy. Strange. For pizza, she gets some of the crust. I won't give her anything with the foods that are prohibited for dogs. No onions for one. Onions are toxic for dogs. So is chocolate, grapes, certain nuts.

Carol said...

She doesn't care for popcorn. My other dogs loved it.

Carol said...

One thing that bothers me about not having TM up and running is that we can't keep in touch with the others who live up in your neck of the woods Coreen to see how they are doing. Dang it.

jan said...

I did sign up a couple of weeks ago on TM. Do not comment but I do get messages about it. I like to read everything.

You all will have to forgive me. I have decided that I want to do something toward gun control. Not sure what yet. Maybe just contributions. But I want to do something.

Carol said...

Forgive you Jan???? Here's a big KISS. I've signed every petition I can find. I want to do something more also besides support the effort every way I can.

Carol said...

Coreen, I'm on full alert for your area. I have a tab up for WU for your weather report, your radar and Geoff's blog. Also have the Weather channel on.

Carol said...

What is the north side of your house Coreen? With high winds and snow the snow may drift up against the north side of the house. I hope you can get out of the door. Does your door open inside the house? I guess that most doors do.

Coreen said...

Just came back in...3" & snowing , very fine, moderately (you can still see the neighbors' houses about 500' to the road) wind picking up & unpleasant, gusts about 30...at my back when I walked out to the mailbox, but in your face walking back in...
the town made at least one pass on our street, but it still snowcovered...mail was in the box...

shoveled 5' out from the 3 garages, pushed it to each side on to the grass, it is heavy, not the fluffy stuff they say on tv!& you still have to lift the shovel to throw it...

cleared a path for the birds, spread more seed there & over on the far side down the slope...

and the worse still to come during the night so no idea what will be out there in the morning...still predicting more than 12"

did see one car driving on the main road when I walked out to the mailbox, but that's it...

Coreen said...

I have a couple of ways to get out, but usually go out the garage doors, what will be the problem is drifting snow in front of the garage doors where Donald has to plow at some point...I can not see out there w/o opening one of the garage doors...

Carol said...

Coreen, what's the worse you've seen for snowfall in one day up there?

Carol said...

Looks like TM is back but for how long?

jan said...

Thinking good thoughts your way Coreen

jan said...

Sending good thoughts your way, Coreen.

Carol said...

I have 5 coats of polyurethane on my little cart and it's looking good. I think I'll do a few more tomorrow. Since I'll be doing most of my cooking on it, I don't want anything I spill to stain the wood, and I will be spilling.

It's 69 here but I had to turn on my heater after watching the weather up in the northeast. I was shivering. I'm very suggestive.

Coreen said...

The worst is coming through for the next several hours...

good news was Don did a first plow of the driveway just before dark, there was about 6" on the ground then...

Coreen said...

Carol, right after Christmas, 2010
we had about 11", that was the year it snowed every week & it stayed so cold that it never melted...so far this year each time it snowed, it warmed up & everything melted...yesterday we had no snowcover at all...

Carol said...

Then this could be the worst.

Carol said...

You and RR acting like tough girls. I'll worry about ya anyway.

Coreen said...

There is a chance that Ffld Cty may not get the really high snow totals...

seems the 2nd storm from the west has not completely merged with the one that came up from your way so while we may still get a foot, the estimates of 2 feet may not materialize, the next 3-4 hours will tell the story(if you look at a radar map, there is a gap where the 2nd storm so far has not come together...

the more intense heavy snow seems to be hitting hard in the eastern part of the state, around New Haven toward Rhode Island...

Coreen said...

Right now the roads I95, Merritt Pkwy are absolutely snowcovered, but virtually no traffic...so if the weatherguys are right, we may have dodged a bullet...if the winds don't cause widespread power failures, it will indeed prove to be another classic nor'easter...a nasty snowstorm but not the calamity that has been talked about for days...

Carol said...

It's best to prepare for the worst and it not get as bad then the other way around.

Unknown said...

"My bet Jan is...that Chloe is just as bad as the rest of us"

Jan, Carol is right. I'm probably the worst junk food eater here. I go through stages where I eat healthier, but it takes a lot of determination and have to have a weight loss goal.

Coreen, I haven't been around much today, but am also keeping a close watch on your weather situation there. I'm glad to just have read that you think it may not be as bad for you as predicted.

I'm pretty sure that at some point, some of that weather up there will head down our way. When cold air hits hot air you never know what to expects, but it's usually pretty tumultuous.

Unknown said...

BTW, Jan. I talk about nutrients a lot because I have to think about them a lot to stay somewhat on track (which is work for me).

I also have to make sure Emma doesn't pick up on all my bad habits, so I keep the fridge and pantry stocked with all the healthy foods she likes. She just naturally likes a lot of healthy vegetables, fruits, etc (and regular food too :), so I always provide her with a selection of them.

I introduced her to the healthy stuff when she was very young, and it just turned out to be what she most liked. But she's a normal kid and I struggle to keep her on track.

Carol said...

Your lucky that she likes the good foods. Many kids don't. Even introducing them doesn't help. They just won't eat them Chloe. I think I inherited my like for healthy foods from my parents. We liked most things that they liked.

Carol said...

I didn't eat candy or sweets growing up. I didn't like them. I got worse in my old age. I can't remember mom having junk food around the house.

Carol said...

The radar from your area Coreen looks like the most precipitation is in the south center of the state.

Carol said...

You do seem to be in a rain shadow.

Carol said...

A little Swamp magic??

jan said...

We did not have junk foods around when I was growing up, but anytime us kids had a chance, we ate junk food. We all liked junk food. My mother was great in that she fed us healthy foods. We did not even keep ice cream. Daddy loved ice cream and junk food, so once in a while we would go out for ice cream.

jan said...

I didn't keep junk food around either when my boys were growing up and my 2 oldest boys are in good shape and exercise. They both eat pretty well because they have smart wives who cook or make sure there is healthy food to eat. My youngest son is a different story.

jan said...

We are supposed to have snow in our mountains this weekend and it is cold here. Our temps are in the 30's and 40's tomorrow and Sunday. We seldom have bad weather in Alb.

Carol said...

Jan, you are lucky when it comes to any weather extremes.

Carol said...

Coreen, if you look in, please give us a condition report. It's really hard to tell where it'bad and where it's not.

Carol said...

You seemed to be just east of an area that was hit harder. The radar doesn't look as bad in Mass and they are getting clobbered. Radar doesn't indicate wind.

Carol said...

Where does RR live?

Carol said...

RR, if you drop by, give us a report.

Carol said...

Those LL Bean jackets those people at TWC wear must be really warm.

Carol said...

Coreen, we didn't hear from you after about 8p your time. Hope everything is OK. I checked you power co site and there doesn't seem to be any problem with failures in your area. I know you and Renee seemed to be blowing off any significance of this storm. I hope y'all were right. Your east end of the state did seem to fare better than the center part of it did.

Carol said...

Connecticut did well when it comes to power. They only report that about 36 thou lost power. With some of the snow totals and winds, that's impressive.

Coreen said...

Looking out the window, lots of snow, I can see it is up to the bottom of the birdbath...haven't tried to open the garage doors yet(won't try that til Donald comes back to plow driveway again, which may be awhile since there is lots of snow) but so far power is on for everyone I know, they have lots of snow/drifts at their doors...

It is still very windy, snow stopped but chances for power outages remain...

In sw CT fairfield county we have at least a foot, but from New Haven to the Rhode Island border
they were the ones who were/are getting the heaviest snow...still hearing that way 2 feet & up...

Renee lives in New Hampshire...& while the snowstorm is nasty, we do get these events on occasion, I told you that 2010/11 was the worst, that's when the snow was piled so tall along the driveway
it was like driving out of a tunnel...

It will be a difficult cleanup for everyone, but this is what winter is at times...luckily not often this bad...

Coreen said...

All in all it is a really big inconvenience for everyone, but in view of the predictions of catastrophe...stunning snow total amounts notwithstanding, but in 2010/11, roofs were so full of snow,(a few collapsed because of the weight of snow) we had them cleaned off, that was a once in a lifetime happening, we are & will manage...

Right now on local tv, fairfield, neighboring town, about 18" on the
ground not drifts(so I would guess that I will have as much if not more)...but the roads are still not good, it will take
quite some time to clear the roads...& it is wet, heavy snow...

Coreen said...

Birds were all waiting for food, so I threw the seed out the kitchen & living room windows...they are all out there eating...

beyond that, will just wait it out til the roads & driveway gets plowed...the news is that there are many roads that are not passable yet...as I said, cleanup will take a quite awhile...

Carol said...

Glad to hear you are OK Coreen. Thanks for letting us know.

I've been reading about that x cop who went beserk and is killing other cops. It's a very sad situation and it points to some very significant problems.

One is that, from what I see, he really was an ethical member of the police force and was severely punished for it. That job was HIS life and they took it from him for speaking up for someone who was a victim of one of his fellow officers. I saw that often enough. I saw people who took their jobs in corrections very serious, pay a price for it. It doesn't just happen in law enforcement, it happens in all professions. Those who go above and beyond are punished by those who can barely meet their job expectations because it makes them look bad. I was often punished for it myself. It can make a person angry.

Another issue, pointed out for the umpteenth times is...that good people can snap and become dangerous people and we just never know when that switch will snap. It's worse when a trained killer's switch snaps.

Rented an interesting movie last night. The title is "your sister's sister." Had not heard anything about it. Would love to discuss it with someone. Only 3 people in the movie - with a few extras.

Carol said...

I'm waiting for my new furniture to be delivered. I worry how they will get it in here but that's not my problem. They got all my other furniture in so they should get this stuff in. The furniture looks bigger than the door. Doors are the normal size.

I've put 6 coats of polyurethane on my cabinet top. I'm wondering when I should quit. It is nice and shiny. My biggest objective is to keep it from being stained by spills. BBQ sauce is real bad at staining stuff and I'm sure to spill that on it.

Carol said...

Jan, what was it about, without giving anything important away. Is it at Redbox. If so, I'll go rent it.

Carol said...

Just found it on Rotten Tomatoes. It got good reviews. I'll try to get it today.

Carol said...

When I went to Rotten Tomatoes I found a few other movies out on DVD that looked interesting:

The Perks of being a Wallflower
Cerleste and Jessie Forever
Flight- is out in a few days if not already
Sleepwalk with Me

Carol said...

Yesterday, after all our talk of junk food, I didn't eat that much. I guess talking about it got me full.

When I do a lot of cooking, I also get full. I don't eat as much when I cook, especially a big meal for others. I'll eat the small meals I fix for myself.

Carol said...

I'm watching that original series made for Netflix, House of Cards. It's good. I saw on TM where EProf2 mentioned really likeing it also. He's seen all the episodes. I have to get up and walk around several times just watching one episode. There good.

jan said...

Carol, it is about a guy whose brother died a year before and he is still dealing with the loss - and his best friend (a girl) who sends him to a house that belongs to her father (a little fuzzy here). When he gets there, her sister is there (not expected) and the plot thickens. Cannot tell more without giving the story away.

jan said...

The ones you mention sound good. I saw the ...wallflower...one. Interesting - and strange. Not sure I would get it again. Celeste and Jesse sound very familiar. I may rent it, may have seen it???.

Getting ready to go to last dream intensive 2/28. We are ready to finish the course. Have gotten a lot out of it. I may be starting a dream group at work. A couple of women interested.

Got a message from our dream intensive guru and he is doing a class on "snakes in dreams" and asks us all to bring a dream with snakes in it. John found 2 dreams with snakes almost immediately - could kick him -LOL.

I have had no dreams - that I have written down-of snakes in past couple of years that I have been writing dreams again. So went to some older dreams back in 1990's. Found 2 with snakes. Interesting reading dreams then - so much longer and more detailed. Our dreams do change over the years. I was going to some dream groups then too. I was also journaling and not just dreams. Realize I am in a much better place now.

jan said...

After journaling, I am happier here in Alb. I am in a better place. Definitely do not want to move back to Little Rock. would not be good for J and me - for several reasons - mostly his family.

Carol, check your e-mail. I forwarded a NP conf in Santa Fe to you for April.

"I used to want to be perfect. The more perfect we try to be, I think, the further we get from our ideal."

I agree, Jan. Wanting to be 'perfect' just sets us up for failure.

What your dad said reminded me of '.. youth is wasted on the young'. I've noticed over time (reading your comments) that your father seems to have had a strong influence on you, and you have held onto a lot of his values. That's great.

I remember once you mentioned that he used to sing in the car (did you join in?).

You mentioned the singing when I was talking about how much Emma like hearing an old download copy of 'I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter' by Fats Waller, and you said you're dad used to sing it in the car.

Unknown said...

Carol, I've made a note of the movies you listed from Rotten Tomatoes. It's hard work hunting down the good stuff. I'm going to que up 'House of Cards too'.

My Netflix goes wirelessly (we have that AT&T wireless internet through our phone line) to my blue ray boxes. They're so smart now (they actually call them 'Smart') that it's very easy to set up. My big screen has that ability built into it... I like that because it's easier to use just one remote (especially since I sit in the dark, with the only light blasting off my TV... and that's plenty). It's like looking around a dark room after staring at a bright computer screen for a long time, and you are temporarily blinded.

"I used to be able to eat large quantities at one time but now I get full with a small serving but I graze all day and night. Kinda like a cow. Kinda starting to look like one also."

LOL, Carol!!

I'm a grazer too. And when we have too much food or go to a buffet where there's too much food, I actually eat less because I think it all just confuses me. Then a short while later, I'm the first one that's hungry again.

I like simple food. Glen and I don't eat dinner, except for some snacking. Which may be some nuts, or soup... sometime something sweet. It varies widely, depending on how our will power is doing. We started the habit years ago, and just kept it. We never go out to dinner, but instead go out to lunch and pig out on dinner size lunches.

Unknown said...

Am I missing something, or have we not heard from Coreen since this morning.

Hope she has power and is not suffering from that storm.

I laughed, Carol... when you said it's a good thing I changed my handle. Not that this storm is funny, but that I think that I'm a bit of a storm sometimes myself.

Coreen, hope we hear from you soon.

Carol said...

Chloe, I don't have WiFi or a land line. My Internet is a little thingy I plug into a USB port. My TV has special capabilities but I would have to have one of the other two options to use it. I really don't mind playing the movies on my laptop. I can take it anywhere and tuck it up close to me. It's just me watching.

I've never wanted to be perfect. What would we have to strive for? I'm good with trying to be less of an idiot, but not always. Sometimes, idiot is my goal.

Carol said...

Idiots can have more fun.

Carol said...

I still have problems finding all that Netflix has available.

That House of Cards is good. I like Kevin Spacey and he's a real bad boy. At first I thought that I might not want to watch something political but it's a great political soap opera. Lots of scoundrels. I'm trying to savor it by not watching it too fast. This series has 13 chapters. Each is about an hour. I'm just starting chapt 5.

From what EProf said, they must have another season planned. I think he watched them all in a short period.

I interrupt that series with some mindless, cute guy, cop drama, the Glades. I just found that it was an A&E drama. I'll be sorry when I finish that. I just wonder why I've never heard of some of these series. Now there are series that were very popular with many that I never watched, may have been on channels that I just didn't pay much attention to. One was 24. Heard of that? Anyone watch that. What about Breaking Bad? Some of these won awards.

Just read that the Glades has another season coming. Whoopee.

Carol said...

We were discussing snacks yesterday. What I like for candy changes from time to time. I'll get on one candy kick and then I'll burn out on it. I was on those baby Butterfingers for a little while now but over them.

Told y'all I liked nuts and chocolate. My fav nuts are pecans but don't hear as much about them being good for ya. I can't find any candy with choc and pecans, but they have every other nut. Russel Stovers choc has an all nuts box but there are only 2 pieces with choc and pecans. I found some candy making choc in the frig at the camp and last night I made my own choc with pecans. Yum. I always have pecans in my frig. I made some Toll House choc chip cookies a short while back.

Unknown said...

Carol,
Glen loved 'Breaking Bad'... I'm pretty sure he's still keeping up on it. I think your taste may be more like his than like mine.

I'll find out some of the things he likes most. He also surf around DirecTv a lot, which I never do. I may start in the future, I don't know. I won't keep it if it keeps getting more expensive. That's why I wanted Netflix available.

Unknown said...

"Sometimes, idiot is my goal."

I've beat you to it!
I've already arrived and 'idiot' is great fun.

Carol said...

It's really easy to make that candy. I lightly toasted the pecans then carefully melted the choc in the microwave. Mixed in lots of pecans and spooned them onto a piece of parchment paper. Put them in the frig to set. Doesn't even take much time. Actually too dangerously easy.

Unknown said...

I jump around on Candy a lot too. Chocolate isn't usually my favorite, but a while back I was going through bags of dark chocolate pnut M&Ms. Now they're sitting in the pantry and I'm not interested.

I've been more on cake... sometimes skittles or gummy bears (or tummy bears, as Emma calls them).

I've had butterfinger binges too, but it's been a while. I love carmels, and have been able to find some I love at TJ Max at the check out stand over the last few months. Best I've ever had.

The reason I like them and Marshalls is because they're like visiting another country. Everything is from other countries and it smells so good in there, because they have so many scented candles. It's a fun place to mosey on through, because I see things I've never seen anywhere else. I'm not talking about clothes, but the furniture and other stuff. Great fun.

Unknown said...

I can't even imagine me taking the time to make Candy, Carol. I am too lazy, and there is already so much on the market that I love.

I remember one of Emma's teachers was telling me how easy it would be to make Tutu's for Emma. I can get them for $5 at WM. Or a little more at other places.

I'm not much of a homemaker/cooking/sewing type anymore. In the old days, yes. Just not now.

Carol said...

Chloe, I don't like anything in the movies with any kind of war or violence. I do like crime drama but prefer not to see the actual killing, just the investigating.

I hate housework and you can certainly tell it around here.

Carol said...

Got my furniture delivered today. Those guys popped that stuff in like they'd done it before. I like what I got. It was cheap stuff but comfy and perfect for what I need. The recliner was really cheap but sooo much more comfortable than what I'm sleeping on here at the house here.

I bought this protective package for around 50 bucks. It covers for any stains, even burns. Won't do that. I think it repairs or replaces up to five years. If you don't need that done, in 5 years they will give you your money back as a gift certificate. I thought that was worth it.

Carol said...

Chloe, it's takes more time to go to Walmart and get candy than it took to make that candy and they don't make choc with pecans, anywhere around here.

jan said...

Chloe, I had a love/hate relationship with my dad. He did have much influence on me. He sang and whistled a lot. He would sing or whistle a tune when he drove, did not like to talk for for anyone to talk to him. He focused on his driving, probably because he was blind without glasses. He drove fast. We shared a love for music - often the same music. I know words to more songs from his generation than from my own. Singing also relaxes me. I am also very thrifty. I do not spend money easily, when it is my own. ha ha ha.

Carol said...

Coreen, you better start getting your snow pics ready. It won't be long before we fill up this post. I've been a little chatty lately.

I get real happy when you guys get a little chatty too. Make me happy.

Carol said...

Jan, I've been trying to think if I've had any snake dreams? Had a few real life experiences but no dreams that I can remember.

Have I heard that snakes are a phallic symbol in dreams? Might be why I don't have any. No need for any phallus's in my life these days.

jan said...

Yet, there are many qualities I hope I don't share with my dad. He was pretty self involved when I was growing up. He did not share easily. He was an only child and spoiled by his parents. He was not kind to my mother, which I have had a hard time forgiving him for. He could be cruel at times. He was not empathetic or sympathetic. My mother was the parent I felt the closest to while growing up. She was kind and generous to a fault. She would give someone her last pair of shoes if they wanted them. She did know how to instill guilt though.

jan said...

Like the caduceus, the snake is associated with healing. I think snakes in dreams means health and healing.

Carol said...

Now, I don't mind everything else that is attached to the phallus. Just don't need the phallus. I enjoy the company of guys more than women sometimes. I like things that guys are interested in, like building stuff and fishing, etc.

jan said...

I found "Flight" at redbox tonight. Cannot wait to see it. Denzel is one of my fav actors.

Carol said...

Oh dang, I need to start dreaming about snakes then.

Carol said...

I want to see Flight also. I also love Denzel, even his scary stuff.

jan said...

Carol, I like to be in the company of men I know. I probably prefer the company of women. Just feel more comfortable with of women. I am not much interested in the sports men are interested in. I like to talk about movies and books and women's stuff.

jan said...

Coreen, check in with us if you can. I am wondering how you are doing.

jan said...

Did not expect to find "Flight" on a saturday. I think I must have got to the one redbox right after someone turned it back in. Not usually many newer ones on weekends.

jan said...

I am same way about Denzel. Will see anything he is in.

jan said...

"When the judgment day comes, civilization will have an alibi, “I never took a human life, I only sold the fellow the gun to take it with.” – 15 July 1929 Will Rogers

Found this today. Thought it worth repeating.

Unknown said...

"My mother was the parent I felt the closest to while growing up. She was kind and generous to a fault."

Your role model, Jan. You seem to be the same way.

I wonder if your father was not kind to your mother because his father had not been kind to his mother? I know there's probably plenty of other explanations but men often seem to be a lot like their fathers.

As far as self involved, I find that many men are normally more self involved than most women, or at least appear to be. They think completely differently than us, but I find that very interesting. You know I've mentioned before that I think the yin/yang thing can be a good balance (not always, but maybe I've just been lucky.. at least in this time of my life).

Unknown said...

BTW, glad you found your movie. I like Denzel a lot too.

We saw Argo yesterday. It was good, but I don't know if it was really worth the trip. It felt like something we'd seen before.

Unknown said...

nite.

I check in tomorrow morning.

jan said...

Chloe, my dad's mother treated my mother badly and my dad did the same. She stayed with him because she did not know what else to do and also because she loved him, and kept thinking he would change.

Carol said...

Well, I read on Huff Post that the LAPD was going to look into that x cops allegations. Hmmm. Shoulda done that a long time ago. One thing about dealing with the law...they think they wrote it and they own it. There is a certain amount of power that goes to their head. Trust me. It's a good thing that there are so many ways to video thing these days. That helps to keep them honest but not always.

Same with those politicians in our local governments and in Washington. Anyone working for us with power should have close oversight. Close. Too easy to abuse power. It's almost a given.

I think every move those guys make in Washington should be filmed and available to the voters for scrutiny. If you ever watch those hearings, it's a real eye opener. I like to watch some of them. The Hillary one was interesting. Some of those guys/gals speaking in that hearing, I was real proud of and some might have just as well pulled their pants down and mooned us. They really showed their asses. I think..someone actually voted for that person and they are getting paid??

Carol said...

Jan, many women stay with rotten men because they have to. They don't feel like they can make it on their own. Some can't. Parents raising girls need to make sure they are prepared to take care of themselves so they never have to rely on someone else to do it. I think all women should have to live on their own for at least a little while so they realize they can do it.

Carol said...

And Jan, coincidence has it, it's the Chinese year of the snake. How appropriate were you for bringing up that subject girl. I guess Coreen will have to hide this year. She doesn't even like to say that word out loud.

Carol said...

Chloster, we have some potential for bad weather today. Keep your eyes pealed.

Carol said...

It's Downton Abbey day.

Carol said...

Well Jan, did your movie take off last night?

Coreen, have you made it outside or are you still throwing things out the window? Are you getting your pics ready? Better snag some because it may start melting tomorrow. You're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave. Well, 48 degree heat wave.

Carol said...

FYI, tomorrow Katie C interviews Ms Paterno. I have it on my calendar. You may want to watch or record it also. I'd like to hear one of those wives explain how they didn't know what was going on. Do you think it is possible not to??? I do think it is possible to be in denial but not that much denial.

jan said...

We both liked the movie, Flight. Some may not care for it. If I say any more it could give away the ending.

jan said...

Yes, and Downton Abbey is 2 hours long tonight. Is it the final chapter?

jan said...

Coreen, look forward to hearing from you and to seeing some pictures from your part of the country. If I have to I can pull out a couple more random shots. Or Carol, would love to see some of your river.

jan said...

...or your camp house..

Carol said...

Oh, that's good news about DA. I hope that's not it.

I'll get up some camp pics when it's finished. We're not there yet.

Carol said...

Just checked on Wiki and it says season 3 has 8 episodes but does tonight count for one or two?

Coreen said...

A much better morning today, but still lots of work being done all around...

Donald plowed the driveway this a.m., took about an hour...he said
the surrounding towns still have many roads not plowed yet & was happy to see that my road was done when he got here at 8 a.m....even
his street in Stratford was not yet done, nor most of the roads there, he's been staying at his mom's in Fairfield because he couldn't get to his house Friday night after plowing, it was just too bad out driving...

Looks like about 18" here, we seem to have less then the towns east of Bridgeport & closer to the water this time...usually we get the highest amount of snow north of the Merritt Pkwy....

Going out to walk out to the street in a bit, will get some pics for you when I come back...

You really want to share our blizzard 2013?!...

Carol said...

Yep Coreen. It's a very muggy 76 here but I'll take it any day over what you got.

I'm gonna be a couch potato today.

jan said...

Coreen, I do want to see pictures of your snow. I am sure it is beautiful, although inconvenient and hazardous.

jan said...

Finally got a few things done around the house. I was a couch potato yesterday. Today, I changed the bed linens, organized a linen closet, sorted through more Christmas stuff to get ready for garage storage. Just had some lunch.

jan said...

Yesterday I was mixing up my color stuff for my hair. I get loreal for grey coverage and everything is in the box. Not a bad deal and it is a good color for my hair. The last woman who cut my hair really cut it short. It has finally grown out some and I went back to another woman who lives further away, but I was always happy with her haircut. Well, there is a little packet of stuff they advise you to put on the ends of your hair to keep them from being affected by the color/bleach. I decided I did not need to use it since my hair has really grown out since I last colored it about 3 months ago. But was distracted by something and/or not paying attention and wound up putting that little packet into the bleach sol'n instead of the color packet. I noticed when I got it all on that it was burning my scalp more than usual. I then realized what I had done and shampooed it all off quickly. The combination of the 2 chemicals kind of burned my scalp. So now I cannot color my hair for another few days. Learned a lesson. When mixing chemicals, PAY ATTENTION to what I am doing

Carol, the first night of DA was 2 hours and the next 3 (I think) were just one hours. I don't know if a 2 hour show counts as 1 or 2 episodes.
