Do you want to be a Universe Whisperer?

I can see some parallels between Chris Dorner, the x cop and Jodi Arias, the x girl friend. They are both in the news now. I think that both of these individuals were used and abused in this life. I, think that both went about seeking justice for it in the seriously WRONG way. I also think they both probably wouldn't have found ANY justice, whatsoever, any other way. Nada. They would just have to suck it up like soooo many other people have had to do over the centuries. Life ain't fair baby and you can't fix that people.

The problem is that some people can't take it anymore, they don't want to suck it up, and they have access to lots of guns, unlimited access, unlimited kinds of guns. Some aren't even concerned about the consequences of what they do, kinda like Al Qaeda. They don't care if they have to die and dying is part of the plan. How can we scare or deter people who aren't afraid to die??

This is kinda another little synchronicity. Yep, no amount of background checking would have stopped either of these two from getting a gun or an arsenal. Maybe that indicates that our laws we're looking at changing need to go farther, heaven forbid.

Hey, I'm just looking at what the universe might be suggesting. I'm not creating this reality. Don't shoot the messenger! I'm trying to be a Universe Whisperer. I try to listen to what she's telling me. You girls want to join me and listen too? She may be partial to the ladies. Or...maybe we are just better listeners??

I didn't want to take down your beautiful post Coreen but I had a point to make and I think there are people who surf by our little blog but don't drop in to read the comments. I feel that is indicated by all the little drops on our Who's amung us map. Sometimes we might even miss them when we rush though them. All of our posts are there for as long as Google will let them stay.

Also, getting old has one advantage, only one. I don't care who rolls their eyes at me, who thinks that I'm an idiot. Just don't care. I make that my disclaimer to start with. Me and my ego are making peace with one another.

Something else that I found interesting. They have been talking about how women need a gun in the house to protect themselves and the kiddies. I just read that 3 women are killed every day by a husband or significant other. Hmmm. And what about the number of kids/family members who are killed accidentally by a gun in the house?? I wonder what we would find if we compared how many people were saved from intruders by a gun in the house, compared to how many were killed accidentally by a gun in the house. Which would be the greater number???

Carol said...

If people are going to throw statistics around, they need to throw them ALL around, not just the ones that benefit their point of view.

Carol said...

"Obama received one of the biggest standing ovations of the night as he saluted the parents of Hadiya Pendleton, a young woman killed by gun violence, and demanded that Congress vote on gun-control measures."

Hopeful, but we still all need to get involved.

Carol said...

And I'm not indicating that I think that guns should be outlawed from the household. We just all need to take all the statistics into consideration.

Carol said...

"The health risk of having a gun in the home"

"Having a gun in your home significantly increases your risk of death — and that of your spouse and children.

And it doesn’t matter how the guns are stored or what type or how many guns you own.

If you have a gun, everybody in your home is more likely than your non-gun-owning neighbors and their families to die in a gun-related accident, suicide or homicide.

Furthermore, there is no credible evidence that having a gun in your house reduces your risk of being a victim of a crime. Nor does it reduce your risk of being injured during a home break-in.

The health risks of owning a gun are so established and scientifically non-controvertible that the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement in 2000 recommending that pediatricians urge parents to remove all guns from their homes."

This article is very enlightening!

The Magster and I are heading to the camp. It's still gloomy, cold outside but I can do gloomy when I can be inside looking out.

Carol said...

As soon as I started heading out to the camp, the sun came out.
Was that the Universe talking to me? I think so.

Carol said...

I have access to this statistics page. I want you guys to know that some of your old blog posts still bring in visitors. Around the holidays, Coreen, your old Easter pics can bring in almost a thousand a day.

Chloe, your fat butts post used to be a big draw until the pics disappeared.

Unknown said...

I think the sun coming out while you were on the way to your camp was very meaningful, Carol.

I was just going to comment that sun was out here. It never seems cold when the sun is shining (at least in a car :)) There a lot to say for Solar energy.

Unknown said...

Carol,
Those pictures had to have disappeared when I completely cancelled my old Google Account. You might remember it was just plain old Chloe, and when I tried to get it back later, it was not available (so they said).

Believe me, I would have never cancelled it if I had known it would go back and remove anything from old blogs. I was floored when you first mentioned it.

I wouldn't have cancelled it if I had known it would affect your blog in any way.... and I'm sorry that happened.

Actually, I find it disturbing that Google is that infiltrated in everything we do.

Unknown said...

.... hopefully some of the wonderful solar heating will warm up your camp too.

My house mainly benefits from the winter sun on the south side. Also the front of the house gets some of the warmth in the morning (faces the east) and the back of the house in the evening (faces west).

Since we've had such a warm winter though, that has often 'not' been a benefit because we've had to use some air conditioning occasionally in the afternoon. In the car too, of course. An unusually warm winter... but I have no complaints about that.

Carol said...

Interesting that doctors are the most aware of the dangers of having guns in the house and ironically we have not heard much, if anything, from that group of professionals re gun control. But then, many doctors are also Republicans. Interesting huh?

Unknown said...

I love you, Jan, Coreen and your blog. Always have.

Carol said...

Chloe, I'm plenty warm here. I have those AC/heaters and I think it's warmer here than it is at home, when I turn them on.

Carol said...

Lots of people come to see some of Jan's old blog posts also.

Unknown said...

Central heating does have it's drawbacks sometimes.

I particularly like the mini split unit (which is very similar to what you're talking about in your camp), because their not ducted, but mainly do the room you're in. We've done that in a couple of additions we built (at my insistence) and I'd even prefer it throughout the house. Central air is nice, but we have rooms we seldom us, and others we spend more time in. That's why I like being able to control the temperature in each room separately. That the way hotels and apartment houses do it.

Unknown said...

Well, got to get my errands done.
... talk to you later.

Carol said...

My new recliner here at the camp is soooo much more comfortable than the ones in my couch at home. I also have my heated throw laying over it so my ass is nice and warm. Nothing better than a warm ass. Not too warm though. I'm in heaven....

Unknown said...

Ha! Glad I popped back in.

I agree! Nother better than a warm ass!
... and than goodness for my recliner. It's the first place I head for when I'm sick. It's not easy to get me off of it either.

Carol said...

Is it warm ass, cold heart? Nahh. Warm ass, warm heart. My blanket does go up to my heart also.

Carol said...

Coreen, I just heard on a audio of communication between cops that they set the fire to that cabin where Dormer was held up. Are they responsible for paying the owner for the damages? I guess the owner's insurance will go after them, with the evidence of that communication.

Carol said...

I've been watching the Jodi Arias trial again today. I hate to admit it but I'm feeling some sympathy for her. I never felt one second of sympathy for CA so you know I'm not just a bleed heart.

One difference is that Jodi's victim is a grown man who was totally aware that this woman had an intense attraction for him and he toyed with it and used it. He even played with the religious aspect of their relationship. He was her Mormon sponsor remember? He tells her that all aspects of sex were OK except vaginal intercourse. BS, of course.

He was high in the church. He baptized her then preceded to take her to a hotel and have anal sex with her, saying that was cool, didn't count as sex. No, it doesn't justify what she did to him, but if there are any jurors who may be feeling like I do???

The prosecution hasn't gotten a hold of her yet but they better be careful also. She appears vulnerable. One of her defense attorneys is kinda dorky looking. Much more that Jose Bias was.

They are trying to go for self defense and I couldn't see how they could do that but I do see a little thread developing that could be used in that way. Her victim had dumped her but continued to let her, let him sexually use her. At one point she seems to even indicate that she thinks she should go to his minister and report some of this. She says that she's feeling guilt over it. She doesn't do it, but it could set up a reason that her victim would want to attack her, which is the reason she says she killed him. She says it was self defense. It was, over kill, self defense. Once the rage was let outta the bag, it exploded.

Carol said...

Looks like you may have more snow coming tonight Coreen.

jan said...

Enjoyed reading all the comments.

I have not watched any of the J. Arias trial but after reading what you are saying Carol, I think she should get some leniency. So many women spend years in prison for killing an abuser.

jan said...

All of those statements you made about guns, I agree with Carol.

Carol said...

I was thinking that I do feel safe with my little gun here. When I left it at the camp, I felt scared but I thought, I don't have any kids here or a spouse who could pull it on me. Then I remembered something that I had long ago forgotten. I had this roommate here for a short while. She had moved out of an abusive relationship and I thought that she was the victim. She was staying here for a short while until she could find a place to stay. She would get drunk and became crazy when she did. I told her one night that she had to go. She pulled my gun on me and had two knifes also. I told her to go ahead and use it. I called her bluff. She did finally leave but ran her vehicle up and down my driveway, slamming on her brakes and she neared my house. I can't believe that I had forgotten that. Maybe I can.

Carol said...

I told y'all about the time a very good friend of mine showed up at my house at 2 am. She was drunk as a skunk and had been on the wagon for at least a year. My bedroom has French doors and windows and I don't have any curtains on them. I usually have a little light on in my bedroom at night. Anyone outside can see in but I can't see out.

She banged on those doors. I woke up and grabbed my gun. I was pointing my gun at the doors. I was scared shitless. I yelled, who is there. No one answered. Finally I heard a crash. I have a little pond between the deck outside that room and the pool.

It ended up being my best friend. She fell into the pond, broke her nose. When I heard her moaning, I recognized her voice. I could have killed her, but I don't think I would have fired that gun until I saw what I was shooting at. When I screamed at her that I could have killed her, she responded, I wish you would have. We haven't talked since that episode.

So I guess my having that little gun was a problem afterall.

Carol said...

It's interesting that I had totally forgotten that first gun story. That happened over 30 years ago. I later found out that even though that girl had been the victim of abuse, she actually asked for it. That's when I realized that some abuse victims actually beg to be abused. That may be hard to believe but if I had one ounce of abuse potential in me, I would have beaten the hell out of her that night.

Carol said...

And Jan, I have this recurrent gun dream that you need you to analyze. I may have already asked you this before. I'm getting to the age, and this blog has been around long enough, that I'm started to repeat myself. Sorry if that is the case.

In my dreams, when I need to use my gun to shoot someone who is after me, the bullets just fall out the end when I pull the trigger. They literally just drip out the barrel. Or the gun falls apart in my hands. Happens every time I need to use my gun in a dream. What is the meaning of that.

Carol said...

Then, I was talking to big sis about this gun issue and she reminded me of how mad she was at me because years ago, I had my gun in the truck when I went to pick up her and her little kids from a bus station. I had no memory of that either, even after she told me. I was kinda thinking that maybe she had the wrong person but that bus station was in a very high crime neighborhood so I guess I thought that I needed to carry it with me for protection.

Maybe all this is why I'm a little senstive about this gun issue.

Carol said...

I never got curtains for those doors in my room but when I returned home, I put a sheet up over them. I need to find some curtains.

jan said...

Carol, go to e-mail

Carol said...

Nothing there Jan. Maybe it's walking here.

Carol said...

Got it Jan.

Carol said...

I was aggravated at my big sis for remembering something that happened over 30 years ago and being mad about it. It was probably the one and only time I carried that gun with me for protection, if I did then. Now that we have cell phones, I feel safer. Back then we had nothing.

Carol said...

Coreen, cat got your tongue?

Carol said...

Oh, and I can't forget to add when I came home from working at the prison and ran into a robbery in progress. That con took my little loaded gun, along with a bunch of other stuff. He was still here in my yard when I got home but jumped the back fence and ran along the river.

I guess I was actually pretty lucky that something serious didn't end up happening because I had that little gun.

Carol said...

My comedy boys had fun tonight with poor Rubio's cotton mouth last night. They really didn't have to try hard to make that funny. I found it funny just watching it.

I've had that problem only after taking an antihistamine. I've been nervous before having to talk to a large crowd of people but it was only while anticipating it. Once I got started, the nerves went away.

Carol said...

With all the rain we had, it looks like the river will level out at just flood stage. At that level, I will have no problems. Looks like we have a big sun on our weather forecast for tomorrow.

I see you're getting some snow right now Coreen.

Carol said...

Well, yesterday I did some grappling with my own feelings about guns. I have since Sandy Hook. I'm pro one aspect and con another. I've noticed the lack of any opinion from others here on the subject. That's OK. The silence speaks volumes. Not really sure exactly what it speaks but it's loud.

I really have tried to listen to the universe regarding the subject. That may sound silly to you but it's not to me. I do believe the answers are there. I think that the Universe has been talking to me about the subject for many years now. I ignored it to the extent that I even repressed the memory of some significant gun related incidents.
I thought that it was pretty significant that my one little flimsy gun had sooo many incidents involving it.

I still do feel like having it makes me feel safer because I live alone. Just like having a cell phone makes me feel safer. If I leave the house without it, I turn around and go back for it, even if I'm just going down the road to the camp.

Carol said...

When I started the Swamp, the purpose was to have a place to ponder. It wasn't meant to be a mini Facebook. It wasn't meant to be a place to ponder only pleasant thoughts. I've noticed that when I do ponder subjects that are unpleasant/controversial, I clean the place out. That's OK also.

Carol said...

Every time I think that I really want to experience a cruise, some awful cruise story hits the news. I don't know much about the story yet. Maybe I will avoid knowing more.

Just heard there is a recall on some organic baby spinach. One of the brands I buy was included and my state was on the list. It's interesting that I just cooked a pound of the stuff a few days ago and didn't eat it. I had a few bites but lost interest in it, put it up for later. I never got around to eating it and I threw it away. I love spinach and that organic stuff ain't cheap. I found that an interesting coincidence. It was supposed to be contaminated with e coli. Since I cooked it, it was probably safe to eat.

Carol said...

Today there's a big sun on the weather forecast. As soon as it gets light and I get all the critters fed, we are headed to the river.

Carol said...

I will keep trying to be a Universe Whisperer. I will keep my eyes and ears open just in case the Universe has something to say to me.

Unknown said...

Good morning, Carol.

It's a beautiful day here today. Emma has a Valentines Day party at school, so I've been busily getting ready for it... getting cards and party stuff together. Everyone chips in.

That's what I spent a good part of yesterday on.

Unknown said...

I just have to open my big mouth and tell you something that's none of my business, Carol.

There's a difference between pondering and preaching IMHO (believe it or not, if you knew me, I am humble.. regardless of being out spoken).

Also, we probably all do our own Universe whispering (and listening), and many of us come to a different conclusion about things.

Like we've both said so many times, our differences are just as important as the things we completely agree on.

Unknown said...

Coreen,

I'm hoping you don't resent having your beautiful pictures taken down too soon. I know you've got your own set of problems now.... I'm just glad to hear that you came through it better than others on your end of the U.S.

Like I said once before, I don't think I've ever heard you complain about anything. Me, I'm always complaining. Wish I could change that.

Please let us know how you and yours are doing.

Unknown said...

One thing I never do when blogging is speak to the lurkers. I don't even think about any lurkers being there, and try to keep the conversation personal to those I trying to have a conversations with.

I've always thought that to be important and it comes naturally do me. If I felt like there was an audience, I'm afraid I'd be 'acting'.

Unknown said...

... not to mention that I know my opinion is just that: an opinion.

Carol said...

I wasn't preaching Chloe . I'm not telling anyone what they should do. That should be real obvious. And I have no problems with people coming to different conclusions and expressing them. That should be obvious also by now. I won't shut up because some may not agree with me.

Carol said...

And Coreen's beautiful pics are still there Chloe. Take a look. They went nowhere. Making that comment seems to indicate that you feel that I should not put up a new post until you think that it's time. I've gotten that feeling before here so I make a point to remind everyone of that. A new post can go up every day or more than once a day. Putting up a new post will not remove any pics that are here. To remove pics, it takes some serious activity. I won't do it.

Carol said...

From over here, I could feel your hostility. Now, I know I was right. What do you think is the purpose of a blog??

Carol said...

Every thought we have is an opinion.

Carol said...

And your are welcome to express your thoughts and opinions here. And I will continue to.

jan said...

Woke up at 2 am, layed there for an hour or so, finally got up, had a pressure kind of headache but trying not to take any nsaids as I think they might be affecting my stomach in a bad way. So finally at 3:30 I got up and fixed myself a big cup of tea and went to spare bedroom and journalled and drank my tea. After a while I went back to sleep.

jan said...

Fortunately I don't have an early morning at work so I can take it easy.

Carol, you know how I feel about guns. When John and I married he did have a couple of hunting rifles. He was asking if I knew where they might have gone. I suspect one of his sons might have taken them. One of the things about kids is they tend to think what you have is theirs and if they want something they just take it. Sometimes they tell you and sometimes they don't.

jan said...

I will not have a gun in the house now. We have too many grandchildren who come over. Plus, I just philosophically do not want a gun in the house.

jan said...

If someone comes in the house, I will just try and get out of the house.

jan said...

...and call the police.

jan said...

From what I understand about most people who break into a house - I have read this - is that they just want to steal something and really do not want to run into the home dwellers. So I would not try to stop anyone from stealing anything.

jan said...

One of the things I like about having a dog is that Riley and Lobie (before she died) would bark if anyone came close to the house. Most people who want to rob a house will not enter if there is a barking dog.

jan said...

Happy Valentine's Day. I actually could care less about this day as a holiday. It is so commercialized now. Also, it is the anniversary of my marriage to the man 49 years ago who physically abused me. I think I may have had a dream about him or that time in my life - because I woke up thinking about him or that time. I did google him the other day and found his obituary. He died in 2001 at the age of 66 years old. I was greatly relieved. We were married only 10 months but he stalked me for 17 years - that I know of. I know that because he called my sister's ex husband for all that time. My sis's ex husbands wife answered the phone one night in 1981 - and gave him my sister's tele number - he called her house and got my sis's husband and he gave him my tele number. On Halloween night in 1981, he called my house at 11 pm - my husb answered the phone - it was a person to person call - so he handed me the phone. It was him - I was as terrified then as I had been of him 17 years before. I remember that I was trembling uncontrollably. I hung up on him. I did not answer the phone again for months. Only my husband and son answered the phone. The next summer I went to Austin to school and was gone 3 months. I did not hear from him again.

jan said...

I guess if there was ever a time that I would have bought a gun and learned to shoot, it would have been then - but even then I did not want a gun in the house. I did have a teenaged son at home.

Carol said...

Jan, did that guy hold a gun on you?

Yes, having a dog gives me another reason to feel safer. Not really sure if Maggie wouldn't just hide somewhere though.

I think that buglers are just as afraid of small yappy dogs as they are of big one.

Carol said...

I do think that Maggie would bark but only if the robber knocks first. I don't think that they would probably do that.

Coreen said...

What's the problem here...

You were looking for some observations Carol...

Have to say honestly your dwelling on the gun issues is just not of much interest to me...

have heard more than enough about guns...time for all sides to stop the talk & walk the walk...which would mean well the Senate could actually bring a bill to vote on, let's see if those wringing their hands & flapping their lips actually have the balls to vote against what their constituents may or may not want...so far doesn't look like the senate leader has the will to do so..& instead of campaigning nonstop, the election is so over... if the house won't bring a bill to do what obama wants...he can sign an executive order banning whatever (doesn't matter if it isn't quite legal...he's signed plenty EOs that may not necessarily be valid)

As far as your post/comments Carol, the cop killer is dead,(once it is confirmed its him) Yeah!...

I find your sympathies for the killer to be misplaced...as well as those who have expressed some sort of understanding for his motives...just plain bull!...no merit in any of that...forget about that so-called greivance...it was litigated, appealed, decided...end of story...

Most disappointing that all through this media frenzy..Here's what was ignored by those making excuses for this guy...Not even a mention of the victims names...
4 victims

Keep or get rid of your gun, don't care...but then the same thoughts you have about why you get to keep that gun would have to apply equally to all those other gun owners, since who makes you or anyone else the moral authority of why/who gets to keep that gun...

Zero interest in the woman's trial...

Is that enough feedback for now....
just not my style to stay on a soapbox...but absolutely you should stay on it as long as you want...its your place afterall...

Carol said...

Jan, you do have a man in the house but I understand that you didn't always. I would feel safer with anyone else in the house. Then I wouldn't feel the need for my little gun. Even a big dog that doesn't hide every time she hears a noise.

And Renee, I don't expect that anyone will agree with them.

Unknown said...

Ooops.
Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. I need a vacation, I guess.

jan said...

Yes, Carol, he did - and once he left it on the sofa and when I woke up = he was not there and my 2 little boys were fighting over it. The younger one had it and the older one was trying to take it away from him. I managed to get it from them and hid it in the top of the closet between the folds of the blanket. I later gave it to my dad to get rid of it. I did not tell him what had happened, just that I did not want it in the house.

I started making plans to leave then. After we divorced he came into the OB/GYN office where I worked and pointed a gun at me. I took hold of it (had a longer barrel) and did not let go. He threw me around on the end of the gun for a few seconds and I began to yell and the 2 docs came out of their exam rooms, and one got him around the chest and the other took the gun. The police came after him. That is when I left the country.

jan said...

Both times I, and my little boys, were very lucky. I don't plan to give anyone another chance.

Well, as you can see, my reasons for wanting gun control are personal.

I hope no one here is offended by my asking Carol to go to e-mail when she wrote about her dream. I am in the process of learning how to lead dream work with people, individually and in groups. One of the ethical issues in this process is to only work with someone in a dream in a private manner. So, I will not discuss someone's dream here in public.

Carol, Coreen, Chloe - and anyone else who contributes here.

There are times I do not comment, not because of lack of interest -more often, it is because of lack of time. I am working more hours and when I get home, other things going on here are "calling" me. I do catch up on reading after a time.

It is my understanding from Carol - stated over and over- that we can talk about or express an opinion about anything we wish.

I tend to write more personal stuff about me and my family. I have opinions about most everything, but don't always express an opinion unless it is an issue that I feel pretty passionate about. If I don't express an opinion about something, sometimes I may feel I don't know enough about it to say anything. I do like reading each of your opinions. And that is what all of this is - our opinions.

If you girls are talking about an issue that does not particularly interest me, I skim over the comments. That is each of our prerogatives to do. Hope it is ok to call us "girls." That is how I think of us. I don't especially like the term, ladies. And women sounds so clinical. ha ha

jan said...

I do consider each of you my good friend. I care about you very much. I depend on this blog for friendship, fun and a forum to express myself. How about those 3 F's?

jan said...

I think of the word "girl" as in "girlfriend."

jan said...

Interesting stuff in the news -interesting to me. The Bladerunner has allegedly shot his model girlfriend. Somewhere in the news it says there have been reports of domestic violence. He claims he thought she was an intruder. Boy is this going to be a "sticky wicket" with him being disabled.

The other interesting thing is the little boy, Ethan, who was in the bunker with the nutjob. Ethan has autim. He seems to have a mom who is nurturing and wise. Dr. Phil is involved. They are saying it is ok to ask Ethan about his feelings but not to ask him what happened in the bunker. I wonder if the nutjob knew he had autism. Ethan says the guy made him fried chicken. Ethan seems to be doing very well with communication despite his autism.

As you might guess, I am not working today. I am going to do a hearing screen on a little kid in a bit. She is almost 3 and will age out of our program tomorrow. She will not allow me to do her hearing screen while she is awake. It does not hurt, but requires I put little probe with a soft cover on it -into her ears. I will go this afternoon and do it while she is napping. The hearing screens are required in our fed grant.

Carol said...

I'm here! It was 48 degrees in the kitchen when I got here. 50 something outside and where the sun hit's my outside gauge, 77. A little chilly for my blood. I have my heater on and it's heating up fast. Made a cup of warm coffee.

Both of those news stories are of interest to me also Jan. I heard a little from that mom this morning. What a neat lady she seems to be.

Carol said...

Looks kinda bad for the blade runner. Just another incidence of gun violence and highlighted by the fact that it is someone who is notorious. Don't you think that it's kinda interesting that there is so much of that? Not just some nobody but someone that many people know or have heard of.

Carol said...

My heating blanket is heating up my butt nicely also.

Carol said...

I have a question for ya Chloe. If you are so uncomfortable with people expressing opinions, that are different from yours, why do you choose to hang out in places where that is a major objective? Everyone knows how opinionated I am. I have been all my life. Not likely to ever change. Hope not.

Carol said...

Jan, how do you do a hearing screening with someone who is asleep? How do you know if they are hearing? Do you have ESPN?

Carol said...

You know I mean ESP.

Speaking of ESPN, Coreen, when does BB season start? I heard something about your A-Rod boy the other day. What's happening? I also heard that much of your team is getting a little old and worn out. Join the club, huh.

Hope that doesn't rile your feathers.

Carol said...

Kinda felt like an episode of mob wives here this morning. He he he. If there are any lurkers, our rating may have gone up. I don't consider you a lurker Renee, just one of those 90% who don't choose to participate. I've felt your presence here, besides the fact that you told me on TM that you visit.

jan said...

We do OAE Otoacoustic Emissions hearing screens on children 0 to 3 years of age. The child does not have to do anything. I was trained by an audiologist to do the hearing screen.

Otoacoustic Emissions
One of the tests is called otoacoustic emissions or OAEs. For this test, a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the ear, sounds are played and a response is measured. If a baby hears normally, an echo is reflected back into the ear canal and is measured by the microphone. When a baby has a hearing loss, no echo can be measured on the OAE test.

I copied the above from Google.

We are required by our grant to test children's hearing (in our program) every year. New Mexico requires an OAE screen of all babies born in NM hospitals. So we start about 8-9 months of age and test until they exit our program -annually.

jan said...

It is estimated that about 1 in 100 children 1-3 years of age will have a hearing deficit.

Carol said...

Very interesting Jan.

jan said...

Some children from 8 months on will not cooperate with the OAE screen so I will go to the child care center and do the screen while the child is sleeping. If he/she cries the screen won't work. It only takes a few seconds but I have to put a little probe in their ears to do it.

May be worth watching...if you get

they had some big hits, not a big

Notice the pics of Frey & henley then & now...honestly the now for both of them is much better...but then again never liked guys who had hair longer than mine...
Glenn Frey & Don Henley reflect on the History of the Eagles

RebelliousRenee said...

Hey... I skim lots of post too. I'm not into the same TV programs... I mostly watch political shows and sports with an occasional movie thrown in.

Coreen said...

Mob Wives?!...not even close...if it was, I'd have to make you an offer you can't refuse...

about my team...we'll see what happens, they have been written off before...espn lightweights running their mouth, nothing new there....

Alex, who knows what is going to happen with him, good chance he won't play at all...

Just happy to know that Derek, Mo & Andy should be back...

Carol said...

And Coreen, I wasn't sympathetic to Dorner's killing anyone and I would would appreciate your not trying to indicate that I was. I do know for a fact that some of what he complained about does happen but doesn't at all justify his actions. I tried to make that clear.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan... the other 3 know me from TM. Let me introduce myself. I live in New Hampshire. I'm married to the love of my life, Rick, for 37 yrs. We have no children. He just retired from HP. I'm a professional hand weaver... been weaving for 38 yrs. I specialize in scarves and shawls made from hand-painted yarns.

We went to NM for the Indian Festival in Santa Fe about 20 yrs ago. I love the Southwest. Sorry to read about your family's medical problems... I wish you and them well.

Carol said...

I'm an Atlanta Braves fan now.

Carol said...

If not mob wives, maybe the housewives of the Swamp. I may not be married to a person but I'm married to a couple of houses.

RebelliousRenee said...

I'm a Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and New England Patriots fan.

Coreen... ESPN lightweights... ROFL!... that's a good name for some of them. Although, I know they are criticized for being obsessed with Boston and New York teams.

Carol said...

Renee, Jan probably went to do her hearing exams. She's big into making quilts. And Coreen does either kniting or crochet, which is it Coreen. I don't have any talents in that area. I do a little drawing and have done some painting. I hope to take a watercolor class soon. I did my little dragonfly avator with some watercolor pencils. I don't think I could compete with George Bush though. I do mostly showers and watercolor and showers usually aren't very compatible.

Carol said...

I mostly listen to Travis Rogers on Yahoo Sports. I'm not even much of a sport's fan except for my Saints. If you saw me watching my Saints, you would think that I'm a sport's nut.

Travis Rogers is just interesting and entertaining to listen to even when I'm not that interested in the sport he's talking about. He's kinda gossipy.

Carol said...

I have watched some BB because of Coreen. It's a little slow for my taste. I'm constantly worried about one of those guys choking on a sunflower seed. How can a person run bases with a mouth full of sunflower seeds?

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol... I also crochet and knit a bit. I do it mostly at night while watching tv. I LOVE to work with my hands and keep them busy often.

IMO, painting is good for the soul... you did a good job on your avatar. I like the Saints... I'll watch them if they play a different time than my beloved Patriots.

Gonna go now.... gotta get some work done this afternoon.

Coreen said...

Carol, never said you were sympathetic to his killing, but you speculating that the guy was "used & abused in his life" & that his grievances may have had merit (which you said in earlier comments) suggest/imply there is some justification/explanation/excuse for actions that have none...

your reaction is precisely why I refrained to comment on your post initially, as far as I'm concerned it is sympathetic to individuals who merit none...

You were searching for a response this morning....i.e. 'cat's got your tongue', not a chance...just absolutely do not agree with any of your thoughts about the copkiller...tried to avoid starting a dustup but you asked, I answered...

Carol said...

It's amazing to me that we bunch of women can get along as well as we do here. We all have different opinions and the one thing we do all seem to agree on is....that we are Hillary Clinton fans. We love us some Hillary. I'm wearing my Hillary, madam president t today, under my sweatshirt. She right next to my heart.

Carol said...

Don't worry about me doing any dusting Coreen. I've learned to live with it.

Carol said...

We are all a little used and abused in life. I just acknowledged that. People seem to be tolerating it less these days.

Carol said...

I consider this blog as a personal journal. I put myself out there and I don't mind, and actually appreciate, having my thoughts and opinions challenged. Challenged but not attacked. Without being challenged, I don't think I can evolve.

Carol said...

As we have discussed before, I'm not always sure how I truely feel about something. If I can't support an idea or opinion, maybe I'm not committed to it.

Carol said...

Renee, what is a mascarpone?

RebelliousRenee said...

ok... I managed to tie on a new warping... I'll have to work my butt off tomorrow for taking so much time off today.

Mascarpone 1] is an Italian cheese made from cream, coagulated with citric acid or acetic acid. After denaturation, whey is removed without pressing or aging.

I got that from wiki, Carol. It's very similar to ricotta cheese.

RebelliousRenee said...

And Carol... I agree... I don't mind my opinions being challenged either.... but attacking... no good. I usually just don't answer an attack.

Hey... Coreen as a New York fan.... and I as a Boston fan... get along just fine. A little competition never hurt anybody. I don't take myself, my sports teams, my politics, or my opinions too seriously. I got over myself a long time ago.

Carol said...

Jan, one thing that has really amazed me about most of the parents of the children of the Sandy Hook victims and the mother of that little Ethan is that they were so willing to forgive. They are all so highly evolved individuals. I find that to be very very significant.

Carol said...

Cool Renee.

Carol said...

I guess it's time to leave Owl Camp and go home.

Coreen said...

Renee, maybe because around here
we have Boston fans in all sports, some of us even have close friends who are (but not too many)...CT is divided...my side Fairfield County to NY border is predominantly NY centric, while New Haven east has more Boston centric fans...

and yes Renee, a good perspective to not take one's self to seriously in most cases...

thinking about opinions...can not remember someone changing mine & likewise me changing anothers...

Carol said...

Like it or not, we all need a little stress to grow. Best example that I can think of is a muscle. If you want a muscle to grow, it needs some stress, resistance. When astronauts go into space and lose the effect of gravity, their muscles atrophy. Of course, with too much stress the muscle breaks down or breaks entirely. We have to find the right balance.

Coreen said...

Now this could prove interesting...

Coreen said...

And never even mentioned...Banana Joe, the affenpinscher won the Westminster...and he was a little cutie...he made the rounds on tv this a.m....I liked him, the foxhound, the bichon & the sheepdog of all the 7...

Carol said...

I've liked what I've seen of Booker. He does like to rescue people. Guess that's not something that would interest you Coreen. There was one thing that he said that I didn't much care for but I can't remember what it was. Now, Rivera...yuk.

Carol said...

Rats, I missed the dog show.

Did y'all hear about the golfer lady who lanced her black widow spider bite with her golf tee and then kept playing? Now that's one tough lady. I've never heard of lancing a spider bite, that is unless it would get infected and develop an abscess. I hope she doesn't develop some flesh eating bacterial infection from a dirty tee wound.

Carol said...

I'm pretty sure I had a black widow spider bite once. I had a family that held up in the boat I dragged when I was farming crawfish. I had never seen a black widow spider before then. It was bad enough that I had to fight off all the snakes out there, much less poisonous spiders.

One evening I developed these severe abdominal muscle cramps. Double me over pain. Unusual pain. I also found this whelp on my thigh. I put two and two together and figured that was what it was. I lived and I didn't go to any doc. I was tough back then also.

Carol said...

Black widow spider bites usually don't kill people. I'd rather have one of them than a Brown Recluse bite.

All my inmates who developed boils came in saying they had a spider bites. I told them that unless we had a subculture of bad boy spiders, that some spider cops were arresting, there weren't enough dangerous spiders there to be responsible for all those boils. They weren't spider bites, those boils were the result of MRSA. That is rampant in all jails. I was an expert at treating it.

Coreen said...

Corey Booker defended private equity firms & bain capital & took a lot of flack...for sure that's what you don't remember you didn't like!!...

Guess you have some problems today...Rescuing people...some of us get the opportunity to rescue people on a daily basis...you forget my clients get 'rescued' from those nasty banks you hate so much, but I remember you aren't so sure those debtors deserve the chance to wipe out debt...

Carol said...

Nope that wasn't it Coreen. I didn't know about that.

Yes, to a certain extent, I think people should be responsible for their behavior, just like those killers are. A person shouldn't be able to go on reckless spending sprees and then leave the rest of of us, who live within our means, to pay for it. I'm sure you don't do it for free and you don't do it on credit either, do you?

Carol said...

Before filing for those who desire to get out of paying their debts, do you look at why they got into it? Was it because they just wanted too much that they couldn't afford to have or was it because they had unexpected medical bills or maybe an unexpected hurricane? I do have compassion for those who, through not fault of their own, can not pay their bills. Yes I do.

Carol said...

And I know that you are aware of that.

Carol said...

Another question Renee. What does... "I managed to tie on a new warping" mean?

jan said...

Hi Renee, welcome to The Swamp. I too like to do something with my hands while watching TV. I need to get my quilt out and work on it. Glad to have you here.

jan said...

Official word - C. Dorner ID's as body in cabin.

Watching the cruise ship stuff. Still does not scare me when thinking about doing a cruise trip. I would never go on a Carnival cruise. We like the Norwegian cruise line. We have been getting ads for Viking River Cruises - one has a side trip to the castle used in Downton Abbey. Sounds interesting.

jan said...

You have to go to msnbc, Rachel Maddow show and hear Lyndon Johnson order pants. It is so funny and so Texan.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol... it's a technical term. A warping is the threads that one strings on the loom before weaving. It's time consuming. Hobbyist usually put on a new warp with every color change. A production professional such as myself, does a trick of putting on a white warping.

Warpings are wound on the back beam and brought forward, woven, and then go under the loom to a cloth beam. At the end of the project, you cut it off. I cut off at the white warping and then tie on my color change. It takes about half the time it takes to put on a new warp with every color change.

But it means I'm locked into that width for a while. Right now I'm weaving my 8" wide scarves. I've been at it since the beginning of the year.

Hope you got this.... it's kinda hard to visualize of you don't know anything about weaving and it would be impossible for me to explain it fully.

Carol said...

You could send me some pics of it along with some pics of your scarves. We're gonna need a new post soon or sometime later.

Coreen said...

"I'm sure you don't do it for free and you don't do it on credit either, do you?"

And your point would be....

Sounds like you have determined that debtors are deadbeats... but you would be wrong...the vast majority of those who file bkpt, have tried to pay their bills & at some point when they are overwhelmed & can not manage their debt, their living expenses, their life, they seek out someone to see if there is any help...& there is, a federal law to give them an opportunity to get back on track...

The law does not make a judgment as to whether a person wanted to much they couldn't afford, & while there may be abuses of the system, there are provisions that prevent a person from going on a spending spree & immediately filing bkpt...

The trustee may inquire as to what precipitated the bkpt, but as long as the debtor meets the law's
criteria, absent fraud, generally the bankruptcy will go through...most bkpts are caused by
loss of job, illness, divorce, which obviously reduces the debtor's ability to pay his debts...

Carol said...

"Sounds like you have determined that debtors are deadbeats."

Again Coreen, you didn't read what I wrote but I won't repeat myself.

Carol said...

What is the difference between someone who buys lots of fun stuff they can't afford, not talking about the necessities of life, and someone who goes into Walmart and steals it?

I never said the "law" was just.

Coreen said...

Read you loud & clear Carol...its the same opinion you have expressed often enough...

The last time I checked theft is a crime...living above your means/buying stuff you can't afford is not...you may not approve, but well that would be a judgment call on your part....

and who ever said law is 'just'...

Carol said...

I do reserve the right to be judgmental, but compassionately judgmental. I have a lot of work to do in that area. Need to evolve there.

See, in my book, theft is theft. When you buy something you can't afford, not likely to be able to pay for, don't need for life, it's theft. Again, if a person has unforeseen circumstance for either not being able to keep up with their bills or feeling the need to steal milk for the baby, that's a different story. Or not being able to meet ridiculous medical bills, I'll forgive that. I even hate to pay them.

And if some woman, who has been grossly abused by a horrible significant other for a good bit of their lives and they snap, I can be compassionate there also. NOT talking about this Jodi girl. Don't know the entire story there yet. I'll let you know later. Wasn't compassionate toward Casey, but I didn't want her to fry either.

Don't have compassion for Dormer's killing those cops but do for some of the injustices he might have endured. I hope they didn't purposely torch him. It looks like they might have.

Coreen, if don't know me by now, you'll never never never know me... And I think that you do know me and that you do get a kick outta prodding me even though you won't admit it sister.

Carol said...

And Coreen, if you don't want to be mob wives, you need to pick who you want to be. I could be Honey Boo Boo child. I can totally see you as a mob wife though. Remember, some of your guys didn't have a lot of luck with longevity, similar to those in the mob. The rest of yous can pick your own reality star. The KKKs are available.

Carol said...

Oh, I'm talking about the Kardasians. I better clarify that.

Carol said...

Woke up this morning, too early, pondering how we judge differently the means to an end and what kind of person is doing those means.

We can forgive those who don't pay for something when they couldn't pay for it but put it on a credit card but not when they walked into a store and took it. Maybe you say it is because they had every intention to pay for it. Maybe they did, but when you've maxed out all your credit cards and don't have enough of a salary to ever really pay them off, did you really have a good intention??

One difference in who does what is probably going to the the social class and, very likely, the ethnicity of the individual. Some people will never get a credit card or two or three to max out. They might not need to steal it if they could just charge it. I wonder if those are some of the reasons why we judge those things differently.

And we are getting robbed by the banks, Wallstreet and our politicians. We don't seem to mind letting them get by with it, even get a bonus for it. While, the poor, lower class slobs, minorities are rotting in jail for stealing. Jails are made for poor crooks, not rich, higher class one.

Don't really want you to comment, just ponder. Maybe you can't even do that.

Carol said...

Thank you Jan.

Carol said...

And it's interesting how people can try to punish you when your ponders don't agree with their ponders. But, ya have to true to your ponders, no matter what the consequences.

Carol said...

And Chloe, maybe when I write a ponder, I'm talking to the Universe, the universal consciousness. We are all linked by it.

I often feel like what I'm pondering is not even coming from within me but through me. I'm channeling from someone or something.

There have been times when I felt like I was channeling Patsi, our departed friend from TM.

So hey,if you don't like what I'm thinking, it may not even be me but I can't tell you who to really blame it on, I don't know, they don't leave their name.

Carol said...

Maybe I can make a better channel because I don't have as many distractions as other people have and because I'm open to it.

Carol said...

I probably used the wrong terms. Instead of the universal consciousness, it should have been the collective unconsciousness. Jan, you know more about that.

Carol said...

And it's not that I just don't want the blame when I say something you think is dumb, I also can't take any credit when something that comes through me sounds kinda smart.

Carol said...

I'm sitting in my comfy recliner, on my warm electric throw, at the camp, listening to Coast to Coast and watching a magnificent sunrise. Heaven.

I felt the desire to check out what's been on C2C. They had a program on intuition and synchronicity. I would say that is a little synchronicity.

Carol said...

Something I just posted on TM since some do not visit there:

What are the odds that, a few hours apart, on the same day, two major historic asteroidal type objects, both of which are unique will interactive with the earth? Not my question, but one I heard on Coast to Coast early this morning from a Richard Hoagland. I think that the guy speaking thinks that one was no accident. Haven't finish listening. The coincidence is rather interesting.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol, I saw some scientist from England interviewed last night on the news. He said most of the world's astronomers say it was a 98% probability that the meteorite was a piece of the asteroid.

Renee, I heard that there was no possible way they could be, came from two different directions. I can't remember all the other reasons.
