A Place To Ponder
The birthday girl is in the 3rd picture.
The 1st pic is my great GD. The 2nd and last are my 2 oldest sons. The 3rd is my GD and GS.
Great news Carol...Hope you can just soak up some of the a.c. before you start doing to much cleanup...The pic of the pine 'branch' is impressive...& yes you must have an angel on your shoulder...do you have someone who can cut that thing up?...hope you aren't going to try to do it yourself!!...
Jan, looks like a happy family get together...
Great pics Jan. is that Bill in the last pic? I don't even recognize the guy in the second pic. Doesn't look likeBill or Terry. Still on iPhony. Half the laptop keys on the last row won't work. I got my other laptop, the newer one. I have to now download 4 months of virus updates. I like my old one better. I will get someone to try to fix it. New one is not as nice. Went to camp to check on power. Did have power but a huge mess. Rolling that roof back on didn't help. There was an inch of water on the flioor. Major damage. We've had almost 4 inches of rain and most of it got in that room. The room is a kitchen and dining room. Kitchen half looks OK. Water was pouring thru too many places to do anything. I threw some towels down and left. I'll find a carpenter tomorrow and get insurance out there. Being cool makes coping with this a little easier.
TV back on and after a short while of listening to CNN..I'm really depressed. Put it on mute. Both of my insurance policies are $1000 deductible. It looked like a hurricane came thru but if it had been a hurricane that did all this damage, the deductible would be much higher. We now have very high hurricane deductibles in this area. That's a little good news. Remember..I had a few leaks in my camp roof in the kitchen area a while back? I went on the roof and patched those areas. No leaks there with this storm. Like that really matters now but nice to know I did a good job. I told work I wouldn't be in tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure that besides straight line winds, we had a tornado come thru. The winds were coming from the north northeast and the tree fell due east. It looked twisted off in the middle where the diameter of the tree was greater than about 14 inches. Hard to say since it has so much poison ivy wrapped around that tree. Took a powerful force to do that. Whoever cuts that baby up better be immune to that poison ivy. I'm certainly glad that the Mags and I were here and not at the camp. I bet that place was rocking and rolling. I was holding Maggie at the time that tree came down and where we were sitting on the couch was not more than 15-20 ft from where the tree landed. Maggie was shaking so hard that I didn't feel the jolt of the impact. I think I might have been shaking just a tad myself. Couldn't tell.
Jan, I would guess that that baby in pic one is cute but I can't really tell and I think she has a mustache. Might want to check into that. Could be a little hormone problem.
And Coreen, my days of cutting up trees are way over. I don't even want to pick up the little sprigs that fell everywhere. I'll hire that done.
What have we learned from the Aurora Co tragedy? I've had plenty of quiet time to ponder it. Many feel the pain of the family and friends of those who lost their families and friends. I also feel great sympathy/empathy for the parents of the young shooter. No one births and raises a killer. I'm sure his parents were quite proud of his previous accomplishments. I'm also sure that kid had a psychotic break. People who do these sort of things are seriously mentally ill.
I also was remembering the young man who spent two years living here while going to college. He came from this podunk country town up north. He made good grades in school and never got in any trouble. When he was living here going to college, and wasn't at school, he was either playing video games on his computer or watching movies. He was up all night doing this. Kept his room dark. When he would talk about those games or movies, it was like he was talking about reality, not fantasy. I worried about him. I have mentioned him in the past. He's the one who I talked into getting a real life. He joined a fraternity, moved out, got drunk all the time and flunked out of college. Well.. he got a life. My focus here is that he couldn't tell the difference from reality and fantasy while he was all wrapped playing those video games and watching those movies. I wonder if these young people who did spend so much of their lives involved in those activities can one day, under the wrong circumstances, have a break and go into video game mode. My guy is OK now, after flunking out of school, he worked a while, went back to school, majored in nursing, graduated and now he is married and working as a nurse. Haven't seen him in years. His aunt tells me what he's up to.Not just the young people. I know this middle aged doctor who was a big video game addict. He was found shooting out lights and at signs during a break at work. He was an ER doc. People who have psychotic breaks..and have spent much of their lives focused on those war video games..might just pop into that video game mode when they have that break with reality.
I know gun control ain't going to happen but..I don't think it would be a bad idea if we developed a national data base that required listing everyone who buys a gun..either in a store or online. When there are multiple purchases, it should raise a red flag. The name should be forwarded to local law enforcement. I think they actually have something like that around here for narcotic prescriptions. If someone has multiple purchases from multiple doctors at multiple pharmacies, it raises a red flag.
Carol, I do not understand why there is not a data base for people who buy guns. It sounds like, from the news, this guy bought each gun at a different place.
My DIL had all the fake glasses and moustaches and she was taking pics of everyone in some kind of disguise.
Hope you are you able to get some things accomplished, was the foodstuff a total loss...What about the pine branch, did you find someone to cut it up & remove it...is it in the way for getting the car in the driveway, or can it wait awhile...the camp water damage...did you get one of the neighbors to help in cleaning it up...you may need more than one day fromwork to just get things somewhat under control...
