Remembering Dads...

Some memories for Father's Day...

My dad & mom outside our house in the 1950's and then at my cousin's
wedding in the early 1970's...My dad passed in 1974...and my grandfather (my mom's dad) in Florida in the 1940's...I knew him
he used to do puzzles with me & cut up peaches & dip them in wine for me...He passed in 1959...He was a tailor...

Carol, here's the pic of you and the one of your dad & mom...

Jan, didn't have any new ones, but here's the one of your dad & family...

Carol said...

Thanks for doing the Father's Day post Coreen. I wanted to find a pic of my real dad but never got around to it. Story of my life lately. He died in 1971, way before we had any high tech. I'd have to find pics of way back since his last 8 or 9 years of life he was seriously disfigured from his cancer.

Carol said...

I put the wammie on Tiger and he's dropped back. Too bad Tiger. You ought to be nicer to your fans. Maybe that's why you're doing so poorly.

jan said...

Coreen, Great post! A great idea.

jan said...

Your dad was a good looking man Coreen.

jan said...

Carol, is that you with your pa?

Carol said...

Yes Jan..that's me. I don't even know who took that pic. I found it that day Coreen was asking for Father's Day pics. That was on Mother's Day. I was surprised to find a pic with both me and Pa in one. I'm usually taking the pics. I can tell it must be at the cattle auction so it must have been one of Pa's cowpoke buddies..probably his wife..who took the pic.

Carol said...

Coreen..in that 3rd pic..it kinda looks like my Pa on the right. Now who is that?

Carol said...

Glad you got home safely Jan. I saw how hot it's been getting there during the day Jan. You might want to go back. Our salvation here has been our afternoon thundershowers. Even if it doesn't hit me directly..a neighboring shower can cool it off.

It's 70 here this morning. Feels like a cold front came thru.

Carol said...

I see how it goes from the cool 60s in the early morning to the hellacious 100s in the afternoon there. I'm curious..how long will that cool stay in the house before you have to turn on the AC?

You said you were enjoying the humidity in NC. At cooler temps..it's not so bad but you ought to try breathing when it's hot and humid. You get a lung full of water.

How are the fires doing up your way? Have they gotten any control of them yet?

Carol said...

I'm still keeping up with the Sandusky case thanks to my DVR. I feel that the sexual abuse of children went a lot deeper than just Sandusky. And people have villainized poor McCreary but I think he was actually probably a hero. It's easy to sit back and criticize people when you aren't walking in their shoes. He probably deserves a metal for bravery. It's obvious to me that people knew things they were afraid to divulge. He..at least.. tried to.

I also think that the death of that DA Gicar had something to do with this case. He knew something either he couldn't live with or someone else couldn't let him live with. I wonder if we will ever find out??

Carol said...

Do you think there is any way in hell that Sandusky's wife didn't know what was going on??? I'll bet she did. There's no way that she was that naive. I'd like to see her on the stand but if I were her attorney..I'd recommend against it.

And I don't hold this against Penn State or football. It's everywhere. That university is not defined by the evil people who were involved in this nightmare. Those same kind of evil people are all over the place.

La has just passed some new laws to protect whistle blowers and to require people to report child sexual abuse.

Coreen said...

Carol, you are up really early...
seems the steamy weather is going to head this way during the week...
unlike you, we had a rainy week than yesterday turned into one of the 10 best of the year...75, sunny, cool summer breeze (even though summer doesn't start til Wed, when they are saying 90 & humid)...I really can't stand humid...90 is bad enough, but humid
is the pits...

Coreen said...

Jan, its good to be home again...vacations are great, but getting back to your 'own' space
even better...

And thanks for mentioning my dad...he was a good looking guy...blue eyes,(I did not inherit them) tall & thin, my mom fell for him when she was 18...his heritage was Russian...

Coreen said...

Carol, forgot to say that my grandfather was the man on the right in that 3rd pic...my mother's father (that's my Italian heritage from my mom's side, both her parents were Italian)...he used to go to Florida way back when, where that pic was taken...not sure who the other man was...just think about traveling then...driving to FL, 1500 miles from here, no interstates...have no idea how long it took...& no air conditioning...

jan said...

Be it ever so humble ....

jan said...

It was a great trip, but even greater to be home. We enjoyed sitting on our front porch this morning watching the birds. The tree in front is not a pretty one any longer - does not really provide shade, and is breaking off branches every so often, but it provides a place for birds that we can enjoy mornings.

jan said...

Believe it or not the weather here is not bad. The temps vary whether one lives north or south or central. The temps in south NM are much worse and in Northern NM are the best in summer. We are central and they are ok. Our temps are in mid to hi 90's for the highs and in 60's for lows, so mornings are great. We have not had any 100 degree temps yet. We usually don't get up to 100 in the central part of the state and at our altitude.

I agree about sexual abuse of children and teens. I think for boys especially, it is greatly underreported. John has talked about his swim coach when he was in jr hi and hi school. The guy never molested him, but one of John's friends has another story. The predators do seem to prey on boys who do not have a father figure in their lives. They man that told John that the swim coach molested him was the child of a single mother. John's dad was present in his life (although an alcoholic) and he was a well-known attorney in town. That would be enough to scare a predator away from him. John did not want to believe that his swim coach could have done that to one of John's friends. John worshiped the swim coach. Now, after hearing all this, John is more willing to believe his childhood friend. John has told me that the swim coach left town all of a sudden.

On the last day of our time on the beach, I found a huge conch shell. I will take a picture with it and post it later.

jan said...

I do miss the atlantic and our walks on the beach. I would like to move there but so many reasons not to move.

Carol said...

I even bet that the incidence is higher than what they report..1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males. Sad thing is that even many moms often don't believe their own children when they report that their dads or stepdads or other male relatives have abused them so no wonder kids don't want to report it. These abusers are very manipulative like Sandusky was. They appear to be perfect to others.

One of the old pervs we had for years just got sentenced to 110 years. He finally left for DOC. His abusing male children went on for many years. He was always trying to be very friendly..saying God bless you. Made my skin crawl. I thought to myself..I don't think God will listen to you. I'd often see him out in our waiting room laughing it up with one of the younger male inmates. I wanted to warn them but couldn't. Like I said before..some of those young pitiful inmates might just exchange some of what he wanted for something they needed..ie commissary goods. I can be a sick world out there.

Carol said...

Well..now for the golf marathon. I love golf..more to play it than watch it. I didn't even learn how until I hit 50 and took a leisure learning course. A friend who was younger wanted to learn so she could play with people at work. Even then I didn't have much time to play. It is so time consuming. Maybe when I retire. The courses are so pretty and there are a lot of them around here.

I'm a little afraid that my old dusty bones may not take it but maybe if I just took lots of strokes and didn't push it. I used to run into this 80+ year old male friend of my parents at one of the courses. He just pooped the ball down the course slowly.

Once..with a bad swing..I felt my shoulder pop outta socket. And once I pulled a rib muscle. I doubt either were proper swings. I guess when something breaks..you know it was bad technique.

Carol said...

I hope Tiger's bringing some bird seed because he needs to round up lots of birdies today. A small mouse to catch an eagle or two might also help.

Carol said...

Poor Tiger. He's has a bogie on every hole so far. The pimple faced 17 year old kid is kicking his ass.

jan said...

Carol, I have played golf and bridge in the past. Both are too much work. Bill loves golf.

Carol said...

Jan..I wish I would have known when I was a kid how much that work paid and I wish mom would have wanted me to be a pro golfer. I wouldn't mind chasing a ball around a beautiful park for that kind of money. Dang it. I'm putting it on my next life bucket list.

Carol said...

There is skill involved in golf but there is a lot of luck also. I still think Tiger's got the skill..it didn't go anywhere..it didn't disappear..but he lost the luck..the good karma. You can call me nuts..it won't be the first time.

With skill you can get the ball in the right neck of the woods but those hole in ones or pooping them from the beach to the hole..that's lots of luck. A computer couldn't figure out where that ball has to land to roll exactly into the hole. I don't care what anyone says.

I even got one from somewhere I couldn't even see the hole to go in the hole ...it went in. Believe me..there was no skill involved there. Just pure shit luck! And I think the power of the crowd does have an influence... telekinesis. What is Tiger's biggest deficit now? Many out there now hate him and hope he loses.

I wonder also if it being Father's Day had any influence. He lost his beloved father and somehow..I doubt he would get father of the year award himself but then..I don't know that.

A person's confidence is very powerful in golf. Soon as there's a little lapse there..it's all over. Once they make a few really bad shots..it's down hill from there. That happened to Furyk yesterday. It really happened to Tiger also.

jan said...

Are you saying you have made a hole in one? Wow! My Bill had a hole in one years ago. He was about 30. He plays a lot now but I have no idea how good he is. Terry plays a little. Terry loves to rebuild motorcycles. He buys used ones and rebuilds them and sells them. They both are big football fans - mainly for Univ of OK.

jan said...

Carol, I have posted a bunch of pictures on FB. some from yesterday at Terry's house with all the kids and some from the graduation in Virginia.

Coreen said...

More sense by juries...

Roger Clemens not guilty....

these federal prosecutors are again
slapped down...
& deservedly so...he should never have been prosecuted...

1st time a mistrial...but the prosecutors couldn't let it go...
so 2nd time around they lose again...

Coreen said...

And that Clemens acquitted on ALL counts...

Carol said...

Oh no Jan..no hole in one. I was down in a valley and popped it up on the green and into a hole that I couldn't even see. It was just one of those miracle shots. No skill there..just a pure luck shot which is what many of the pros also have on occasion.

Carol said...

Never followed those athlete steroid trials Coreen. Had no interest in any of them.

jan said...

I am here. Been busy with stuff tonight. Nothing much to report. Took some time to sort through all the mail.

jan said...

I did find something I thought quite amusing in the evening Albuq paper. The headline reads "Study examines stressful deaths." This caught my interest. Reading on I found the study was about causing stress on insects and measuring the effects on soil. I nearly rolled on the floor laughing when I read these sentences. I quote "To create a group of seriously stressed-out grasshoppers, researchers...placed the bugs in enclosure with spiders. (The spiders' mouths were glued shut, but the grasshoppers didn't know that.)" I get the giggles just writing this. "This induced physiological changes in the scared grasshoppers that were not seen in a control group of grasshoppers."

jan said...

How the heck do you think they glued the spiders' mouths shut? And just the idea that the grasshoppers not KNOWING the spiders' mouths were glued shut. I like the fact that they felt the grasshoppers were "scared."

I bet if they hired someone to edit the report of this study, the person was having a good time.

jan said...

In their results, they found that "...the {scared grasshoppers} stopped eating grasses, which have lots of protein and start eating goldenrods which contain more carbohydrates. They compared this to how stressed-out students reach for a bag of potato chips before exams.

Just in case someone thinks this is not a noteworthy study, the researchers say the effect of this is that protein contains enzymes and nitrogen that help microbes in the soil break down plant matter, and this process is a key part of normal ecosystem function.

jan said...

The authors say that "if you look around you, in pretty much every spot something at sometime has died-in one place a mouse, in another a grasshopper, ...each...place is going to behave differently from a microbial point of view.

jan said...

I am so sorry I am not teaching research now. I would love to share this study with students. So you guys got to be my students.

Carol said...

That entire research sounds strange and mean. Poor spiders and grasshoppers. But it seems someone else may have noticed that insects have intelligence?? And I think that potato chip stuff is a stretch. The researcher must have been a college student and hungry for some chips.

Carol said...

Since I've been watching spiders, I've had more trouble killing them but the other night I saw one out of the corner of my eye. It was so big I thought it was a taranchula. I just wasn't into catching and releasing it so I used a shoe. I did feel guilty.

Carol said...

Coreen..you were saying that I was up early. I'm always up early. I've been hitting the bed, tired, earlier but then getting up even earlier. I do often catch a short nap in the afternoon.

Carol said...

Make that...I occasionally catch a nap in the afternoon. Probably more often when it's hot outside and there's nothing I can do for long out there. Being asleep is the only time I can stay in the same place for more than a few minutes.

Carol said...

Even though I don't follow the athlete steroid cases..I do follow many of the other ones.

I read that Zimmerman was in trouble because he lied about the donations he got..tried to hide them. He told the judge is was dead broke even when he had over a hundred thou in donations in the bank. He was using that money as his personal money to pay off credit cards, etc.

I guess he thought that the donations he got were to reward him for killing a black kid instead of money donated to help with his defense. Kinda gives you an idea what his mind set must have been..IMO. And maybe that is what the money came for. Who knows.

Carol said...

And I'm keeping up with the Sandusky trial. I record In Session on Tru TV during the day. I can ff thru it and learn what happened when I get home. That case is moving fast. It will probably be over this week. That's nice.

Yesterday..the defense started their side. A couple of old cronies/coaches who were Sandusky's friends testified that they also showered with young kids. Maybe they also should be investigated. Of course they said they wouldn't have physically interacted with those kids in the shower.

All the new's guys and commenters to blogs say that is not normal in sports. I don't think it's normal for any young kid to even want to take a shower unless they are made to and especially with some old men.

Jan..you had three boys. Were they dying to take a shower after getting out and playing hard? I bet you had to make them go take a shower because they were stinky. Most kids can't even smell themselves. Even as a young girl..I didn't like taking a shower until I got home. That changes when we get old enough to want to try and attract a date.

One of those coaches even said he took his very young grand daughter into a men's shower at the Y and showered with her. I'd definitely be investigating him.

Carol said...

Coreen..according to Weather Underground..your weather on Thursday will feel like what we live with down here...high temps and high humidity. They aren't always accurate. What do your weather guys say?

Georgia said...

Gosh Coreen, I'm about to give up on the Braves...don't know what has happened to them...The Yankees sure have their "number"....

Coreen said...

Right now the Yankees are playing
really well...but that can change in a heartbeat, can't lie, I am very happy that they are winning, whatever team they are playing...

Pretty sure you won't stop cheering for your guys Georgia...once a fan & all that...
there is still a ton of games left...so whatever happens in NYC the next 2 games, the beauty is there is always another game tomorrow to make it up...Crunch time is still way off...

Coreen said...

As far as the weather, the humidity has started to inch up already..the media has been constantly talking about the mini-heatwave that is supposed to start
tomorrow the first day of summer for days...
sizzling as they keep saying...

hoping that whatever it is, it goes
away quick...I do not like 90s & humid...I don't like anything over
about 72-73...

And we did have a lovely few days...no a.c., fresh breezes in the low 70s, 50-60 at night & no humidity...

Georgia said...

That's my kind of weather, cool, and no humidity. In La. we get that only for a couple months a year and in spurts then.

Georgia said...

It's like a sauna out there right now...had rain this morning now the sun is out and you can see the steam on the driveway.....

Georgia said...

I cannot fathom having to live in La. without air conditioning..and to think the prisoners in jail Carol tends to have no ac in their cells...I can imagine the stench..If I was Carol, I'd be armed with Lysol......

Georgia said...

And you're right Coreen, I'll continue to pull for my Braves...

Georgia said...

Jan, I'll bet it's a scorcher in NM as well......those poor firefighters....is that one word?

Coreen said...

Hey Georgia on the drive home, sports radio wfan...mike francesca
was speaking w/Peter Gammons & they
couldn't understand how/why the Braves wound up with 6 games against the Yankees, since interleague the only team the Yankees ever play 6X
is the Mets & that is because they are cross town rivals for city bragging rights...they mentioned that the natural rivalry for the Braves used to be Red Sox (the one team I can not stand) since they both played in Boston...

jan said...

Coreen, your weather sounds great. We have heat and little to no humidity. It really is not bad except when you get into a car that has been sitting out in the sun. I prefer cooler weather too. I really liked the weather in NC. It was very cool in the morning, warmed up in afternoon but not really hot and cool at night. The humidity is higher, but not uncomfortable - at least while we were there.

jan said...

Carol, my sons hated taking showers until they became interested in girls. As far as showering with older guys - they would have hated that. I don't think that ever came up. They would not even let their dad in the bathroom with them. They all participated in sports but never heard them mention anything like this.

Carol said...

That's what I thought Jan but I had no real experience to base my opinion on like you did. I consider you the expert on boys.

Carol said...

Either those other coaches were just trying to take up for their friend or they might be pervs also.

Carol said...

And Coreen..from little snippets I heard on sport's radio I got the impression that many sport's writers thought that Clemens was guilty of using steroids or something even though they didn't think that the Feds should have brought that case against him. What do sport's writer up in your area think? And do you think he will be nominated for the Hall of Fame?

Carol said...

Coreen..I didn't know..which is not saying much but neither did TW that the Braves originated in Boston. She knew they were once the Milwaukee Braves. I looked it up on Wiki and read it to her. You learned us both something tonight.

Coreen said...

Well you two must be happier...the Braves won...

Just stick with us yanks!!!...we know lots about lots...I told you WFAN is the best sports talk radio...

As for Clemens...not to much love for him with NY sports guys...the consensus is that they will not likely vote him in to the Hall next year when he is eligible...

Whether he used steroids was not the issue in the trial however, it was a perjury charge, likely politically motivated...the claim is it was pushed by the smarmy little mustached CA Dem. rep. (I forgot his name) with the big mouth...you may not know but Clemens was a friendly with Bush...at last before all the dustup over the steroids...

Coreen said...

I have been playing with the Kindle Fire that I got the other day...finally figured how to delete
things I looked up...getting used to the swiping & the virtual keyboard is not easy...tried to
type on here, but gave up, it took too much effort.....

Carol said...

Then you'd really hate the iphone or droid typing. I find that a pain but the fact that it's so portable makes it worth the trouble. I do need to have what it gives me.. available in my pocket. Now..I couldn't live without that technology. It's like I'm carrying my brain with me. It tells me what to do and when to do it.

Carol said...

I was up early this morning..first time about 2:30. Problem is that I got to bed early and I took a short nap. My body will only allow so much sleep.

Carol said...

Oh..and Happy Summer everyone. TW was asking me yesterday when it started. It starts today. Yuk. It's my second least favorite time of year here. Winter is my very least favorite. Spring is my fav and Fall is next. I would love it if it weren't impossible to enjoy with these horrible high temps. I never liked hot weather..even as a kid.

And I don't know how we dealt with no AC way back. I'm not sure when my family got one but our first AC was in a garage converted to a den. The rest of the house was cooled with a giant attic fan that sounds like a jet getting ready to take off. It did bring in a gust thru the windows though.

I guess we deal with what we have to deal with. Our inmates do but there are more complaints in the summer and lots of lesions/rashes that heat stirs up. You'd think that it would decrease the re-offending in the summer but it doesn't. We are having a record intake and most are reruns.

Carol said...

I ordered one of those NuWave PIC cooktops that you see marketed on TV. I needed it for the camp. I have a couple of burners there that are worn out. I don't have a stove out there.

Those cooktops aren't cheap but the concept sounded very interesting. You are supposed to get two but they tell you the second one is on back order. That's a bunch of BS because they are continuing to aggressively market those things. I have emailed them several times and they say it is on back order. It's a scam. They are probably hoping some of us will forget about it. Even if I wanted to forget..I see it one every website I pull up. Is there anything I can do about it Coreen?

Carol said...

Just heard that the best chance of hitting 100 today.. up in the northeast.. is in Hartford. Happy Summer Coreen. I guess you can put up with anything that only lasts a day or two. Just remember..that's what we live with.

Carol said...

They found pine tar is the glove of a Ray's pitcher last night. What's that used for?

Carol said...

And Dottie Sandusky testified yesterday. She stood by her man. I wonder if she feels any guilt? I doubt it. I don't think there are many who will give her a pass unless it's another woman who has done the same thing for her man. Probably not even they will.

That trial is moving at record speed and they reported that the defense should rest today. Maybe the case will go to the jury by Friday. I wonder if there will be anyone on that jury who will find him not guilty. If there is..that juror better be ready for some collective hate.

Georgia said...

Carol, the pine tar is illegal, the pitcher conceals it in the palm of his glove and passes his fingers on it to get the resin on his fingertips to throw a pitch. It basically really improves the "grip" he has on the ball especially throwing a curve or a slider. But it is illegal, did they toss the pitcher?

Georgia said...

yes Coreen, I am happy we finally won one from da Yanks.......

Georgia said...

Carol let me know the score last night

Coreen said...

And your team just one another...& this was 10 - 5...not a happy camper....& Hughes gave up 4 HR
& lost...& not that my guys didn't have chances...it was 6 - 5 when I left my office...by the time I got here it was 10 -5...

and it was 94 when I left the office...

Coreen said...

and that should have said 'won'...see what happens when you try to type on a gadget!!!

Carol said...

Don't let the gadget intimIdate you Coreen. I'm on my iPhone right now also. It does try to help me with my spelling but sometimes it guesses wrong. If you're not careful it can get you in trouble.

Carol said...

Is there a lot more evil in the world or does our technology just allow us to know about it now? That is my ponder today.

Middle schoolers bully bus monitor, 68, with stream of profanity, jeers

A group of middle schoolers torment an older bus monitor. I hope those kids are suspended from school. If I were their parents..I'd be so ashamed.

Carol said...

I didn't get much sleep last night because at the end of the day yesterday..I got this inmate in that was using his diabetes to totally manipulate and terrorize us. We occasionally get that type of inmate.

He refused to take the kind of insulin we can give at the jail and allowed his blood sugar to go up to over 500 until he ended up being sent into the hospital last night. He said he was allergic to the insulin we use even though it wasn't listed as an allergy on the medical records from his previous jail or the hospital where he was treated for hyperglycemia a few days before.

Human insulin allergies are extremely rare. Inmates can use there medical problems as a way to manipulate the system but sometimes they can end up killing themselves also. He's only with us temporarily until he can be sent back to the Feds. I hope that can be done very soon.

Carol said...

Well today the jury will get to start their deliberation on the Sandusky case. I hope that justice is achieved in that case. There were things that the jury should have heard but didn't. One was the out takes from the Bob Costas interview of Sandusky that was aired on TV a while back. What they aired on TV was pretty damning but what they took out of that interview was even worse. It sounded like Sandusky was trying to say that he didn't go after every child he tried to help. I really think that Sandusky felt that he did so good for so many boys that he should get a pass on the few that he abused.

The prosecution had that info before they rested their case so I don't know why it wasn't played for the jury. Sometimes I think that prosecutors think they have such a good case that they leave out important info. It seems that the jury never gets to hear everything that the public gets to hear so we think it's a slam dunk but they find reasonable doubt. Also..a good many on the jury have close ties to Penn State. Not sure how that will play. All it takes is one hold out to let him off the hook.

Coreen said...

Forget pondering...today, the hottest day so far around here...& what is going on... thousands are already lined up in Newark New Jersey to register for next season's American
Idol...that is what the real world
is concerned with...forget all the
'news'...this is what really matters!!!....

jan said...

Coreen, this is what matters to the young generation.

jan said...

We saw the video about the grandmother on TV this morning. The problem with many kids today is they are growing up without positive contact with their older relatives, like grandparents.

jan said...

We are getting a little break in our weather today. Forecast is 90 rather than hi 90's. We have had wildfires close to home in past few days but they have been extinguished pretty quickly.

Carol said...

Update on poor lady on the bus..there was over $300 thousand dollars donated to her and Southwest Airlines is giving her free airfare to Disney World for her and 9 other people for three days..all expenses paid. Finally something good comes from something horrible. Love it.

Carol said...

And...one of Sandusky's adopted kids confesses that he was also abused. I think he's 33 y/o now. He waited until the jury was out or at least too late for the jury to hear the story. Maybe if the jury hangs or acquits him they can try him again for 10 more kids..and then 10 more...I'm sure there were a lot more than just those involved in this trial. He's probably left a trail or many many more. That perv needs to be put away.

Carol said...

And an update on the monster I had to deal with yesterday. He ended up in ICU. They were giving him IV regular insulin which he refused to take from me saying he was allergic to it. I knew he wasn't. Nothing we could do. He wanted to go to the hospital. He had just spent 6 hrs in the ER getting his BS down..with regular insulin.. two days before and had refused insulin since that time.

I did a little follow up with the people who had to deal with him prior to his getting to me. I only knew him for 10 whole minutes and ended up with a night of stress..limited sleep. Taxpayers are paying a fortune for his little game of torment the "man" and this woman. Sometimes my job is almost too much shit for a nickel.

Carol said...

Just as there seems to be more and more evil in this world..the news reports that some church in NC was getting ready to have to close it's door when a stranger drives up and pays off their $300 thous debt. I like those kind of stories. Those are my favs. I guess 2012 is the year of extremes.

Carol said...

A ponder for the day:

Ordered takee outee the other evening and got a fortune cookie that read something like..discomfort usually leads to enhanced comfort. Can't remember exactly how it was written but that was the jest of it. I've certainly seen that some of my better times in life have followed some really bad times. That can be both physical and mental. We certainly don't always recognize how good it feels just feel OK until we experience some serious pain.

Carol said...

I'm taking off today to work on some CEUs. I'm closing in on finishing my required hours and then I have to sit and input all that data on the computer to the certification site. That itself will take a good bit of time.

Carol said...

They have new info out on the Zimmerman case..his reinactment. To me..it comes down to one important fact. If Zimmerman would have stayed in his vehicle as the police ordered..Travon would still be alive. If anyone had the right to "stand his ground"..it was Travon. He was being stalked by some stranger.

Carol said...

Coreen..when they called your weather hot and humid this week..exactly how humid did it get? Every time I looked..I found your humidity to be really low but the current and predicted level was always way off. I was using that Weather Underground site and sometimes they aren't so accurate.

No matter..you're getting a break soon. Not us. It's getting hotter. It's really hard to live in "sportsman's paradise" when you're trapped in the house.

After further ponder of the bus lady situation..I decided that she should have had that bus stopped in a safe place..and refused to continue the trip until those kids sat down and behaved. The bus driver is also at fault for not doing something. This may be the time to educate bus people to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. Kids will not respect anyone who allows them to act like they did.

Carol said...

Sometimes kids just beg their authority figures to assert some! The situation escalated out of control because nothing was done to stop it.

I don't think that lady was cut out to be a bus monitor. With her new money..she won't need to be.

Coreen said...

Humidity has been in the mid 60% range...earlier it was 91, but clouded over already, with thunderstorms expected later which should snap the heat...

Georgia said...

Hey there Coreen...can you pull for my Braves since they are in Boston this week-end..?? I think I read you don't care for the Sox... It's 91 here now...

Georgia said...

I looked at weather channel online and they are saying 100 here Sunday and 99 Monday and Tuesday...but our humidity is not as high as the NE right now, we have a NNE wind now for 3 days ...it's a DRY hot like you get Jan.......

Georgia said...

My Mother is in Atlanta and she says it's hot as hell there too...

Georgia said...

pity the folks without a/c......I'm sure in New York there are lots of folks without a/c, it just doesn't and shouldn't get that hot there...down here I can kinda see why, but we are about 35 miles from the gulf of Mex. as the crow flys that is.....

Georgia said...

Global Warming ?????? You know its getting bad when they issue ozone warnings for air quality here in Lake Charles....yesterday they were asking people not to mow or fill up cars till after 6pm.....

Georgia said...

I was used to that alot when I lived in "hot Lanta"......

Carol said...

TW..our humidity is never like Jan's humidity except maybe in our ovens..maybe. May not even be that dry there.

Carol said...

I've been fighting trying to do CEUs online today. My computer doesn't want me to get them either. Both of the sites I use give me lots of trouble. It's taken me most of the day just to do 2 hours of CEUs. Don't know why but the webcasts just won't run like they are suppose to. One..for every 10 seconds of talking..there was a minute of waiting for it to continue. I was ready to throw my computer. It's like that almost every time I try to do my CEUs.

I actually fell asleep waiting once.

Carol said...

What's nice about Jan's neck of the woods is that she has nice early morning temps..when the humidity is a little higher. I just looked at WU and it reported that is's 95 degrees with 18% humidity.

Carol said...

Our humidity is rather low today. TV weather site says it 91 with a 38% humidity. Back porch says 92 with 42% humidity. Pretty close

Carol said...

JUSTICE!!!!

jan said...

Jailed w/o bond. Yes!

Carol said...

I really get aggravated when I hear people..and the news media..still blame McCreary. He did try way back..when he was just a mere assistant coach against a powerhouse. The only not guilty the jury found was on McCreary's accusations and they think he could have done more 10 years ago??? A DA disappeared off the face of the map.

Or even the cops that first investigated. They hid in the closet of that first victim. They wanted to go after him..you know they did. They were up against the same power. There are many to blame but it is those high on the food chain. Joe P was one and he did see his karma before he took off.

And that lady who was doing the press conference last night who said that they believe kids.. Bullshit! This monster got away with what he was doing for most of his life and I think he really was surprised with the verdict.

We all need to look in the mirror and figure out how we can do better. ! in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys..probably higher.

Carol said...

I saw Sandusky's mug shot. He really does represent the look of the classic perv. When I get an older white guy in..I guess that his crime is most likely some sort of child sexual abuse and most of the time I'm correct. I seldom see older black men with the same charge. I really can't believe that they are less often pervs but I think as hard as it is for white children to bring these charges..it's probably harder for AA kids to do it.

jan said...

Sitting out on our porch again this morning enjoying watching the birds and power walkers- and the occasional helicoptor going by overhead- One just did- a big yellow bird. We are just 3 blocks from the univ hosp/ trauma center.

jan said...

Carol, I appreciate what you are saying about pervs. I sure wish we could recognize them by how they look, but unfortunately that is not the case, at least in the world at large. Maybe you can there in your incarcerated population. I think of the young guy/massmurderer- will have to look up his name.

jan said...

Ok, now I remember his name, Ted Bundy. He was good looking, charming.

jan said...

I bet Sandusky was a good looking man. And as so many of his victims have said, he was a popular football coach at a major university. Some of the victims say they loved him.

I ponder over the human devastation caused by this man.

jan said...

People in the general population still do not believe kids.

jan said...

Getting gutters cleaned out and fallen limb from tree removed today. We are waiting for a locksmith to rekey the garage door. We had a burglary in the detached garage recently. The items taken were of little value, but we do not feel secure with using the garage for storage any longer. We don't have any guns or weapons in house or garage so no problem there.

Carol said...

Jan, all the pics I've seen of Sandisky, he was ugly.

I didn't mean to imply that all pervs are older white men. It's just when we get one in 9 chances out of 10, or more, the charge is child sex related. The old Doc I worked for first pointed that out to me.

jan said...

Interesting Carol.

Carol said...

Just read that Sandusky is 1 out of 272 inmates in the joint he's in. Must be a cozy little place. My joint has around 1200..definitely not cozy.

jan said...

another hot, dry day here. Read that we are in extreme drought. People encouraged to not use water unnecessarily. Our cars will stay dirty and we do not have grass. Have a few plants in front but those do not take much water.

jan said...

oops, did it again.

jan said...

Went out to Terry's last night for ice cream and cake. Terry is now 51 y/o. Hard to believe.

jan said...

Terry is my #2 son.

jan said...

Miss you guys.

jan said...

Carol & Georgia, are you worried about that storm heading to the gulf?

Carol said...

Morning.

I was up at 2:30 yesterday morning. Went ahead and started doing some of what I needed to do. I got a couple more hours of CEUs done..still taking twice as long as the number of hours I'm getting. Don't know why both of the sites I use give me so much trouble. I found some short..but interesting programs that were presented only in audio. Those worked very well.

It was hot as hell. Every time I opened the door to go out..it was like walking into a sauna. My pool water temp was reading close to 94. That usually doesn't happen until Aug.

I did manage to get my yard here mowed. I split that up between Sat and Sun. I vacuumed the pool yesterday morning. I have to do that before the sun come up over the trees.

After I got thru all my chores.. by about 10A..I was a coach potato. I ate too much which is unusual when it's this hot out.

Carol said...

Yes Jan..any time there's a storm near..my PTSD kicks in. That's probably true for most people who live near the Gulf. And they take forever to really get a path on it. Then it's not set in stone. Rita wasn't supposed to hit us..it was suppose to pass us up. Ike did pass us up..headed to Galveston.. but sent a surge up the river that was worse than Rita.

Carol said...

When I saw Terry's age..I thought to myself..boy, I'm getting old. Are you sure you didn't add a decade or two to his age??

Carol said...

Coreen..congrats on your Yanks sweeping the Mets. I caught a good bit of the game yesterday evening. The Mets got almost twice as many hits but didn't put them away.

Carol said...

Guess who came back to our joint this weekend? Yep..Mr, I won't take the insulin I need guy. And guess what? He still won't. That's who I'll have to be dealing with this morning. He's already cost the government a fortune. I hope there is some way to charge him for that. I'm going to do my best to try to make that happen..as long as it won't be keeping him with us.

Carol said...

I made my second batch of ice cream Saturday. Not such a good idea when it's so hot and I want to eat it all day. The first batch I made as rich as I could. This one I cut back on one egg and the amount of cream I used. I only used one cup of heavy cream and two cuts of regular milk instead of the two cups of half and half. Could barely tell the difference.

jan said...

No Carol, I did not add a decade to Terry's age. You were as close to Bill and Terry in age as to me when we lived there.

jan said...

I got my bike out yesterday evening that John bought me 2 1/2 years ago. I had it in the garage and kept forgetting about it. I had never ridden it before yesterday. So I rode for about 20 min. I was breathing so hard. I am keeping it in the liv room so I will remember to ride it. Going to do that several evenings a week. I probably rode about 3 miles yesterday. I used to average about 15 - miles on my bike and hardly had a sweat. Sooo out of shape.

jan said...

Your ice cream sounds good Carol. keep enjoying!

Coreen said...

Oh no...
Smartphone addiction is real

Carol said...

Coreen..sometimes the need and use of the smart phone is positive and sometimes it's negative. I'm on call so I can't leave my phone somewhere. I'd love to not need it to be around 24/7. It's also very useful to keep me from forgetting important things I need to do.

I think one of the most negative things about all cellphones is when people are with other REAL people and they are texting other people on their phones. It's just very rude!

Carol said...

My prayers go out to the people in
Florida. Debby was not a powerful storm but may end up causing more damage that one. Those tropical systems can do that when they sit over an area for a long time and dump rain. I'm sop thankful it didn't come our way.

Georgia said...

The only problem with Debby not coming our way is the high pressure sitting over us these past few days has turned up the already scorching La. summer into a nightmare. It was 100 in Lake Charles last night at 7pm..!!No relief today either, predicted high is 100 again. What's really crazy is the high in DENVER today is 108... and those fires..!!! What's going on?

Georgia said...

I won't even let my cats out on the patio today...one is 17 years old and when she was out for a few hrs. yesterday she got very sick after eating her food. I'm sure it was from her out lying on the patio, it's covered but still temps were unbearable. My cats love to lie out in the heat, I don't get it...

Georgia said...

Would be nice to be in New York City today, Matt Lauer on Today said their high was mid 70's.....poor Ann Curry, I do love her and I feel NBC is looking for a scapegoat for their ratings slip, BUT, she'll land on her feet, with grace, and be 10 million dollars richer...Take the money and run..!!

Georgia said...

Well, I am watching Wimbledon on ESPN2, waiting on the Olympic Trials on NBC Sports network, and also waiting on November for cooler weather!! September is really our hottest month...and with Sept. comes droves of hummingbirds, I put out 2 feeders and have to keep running back and forth to Wal-Mart for sugar I have so many......

Georgia said...

Carol at the camp has them year round I believe but I live in a sub-division in town and only have them in Sept. I'm kinda glad cause we get so many you have to do the feeders everyday.

Coreen said...

Sorry about the triple H days guys...& that you have to endure them for the forseeable future...

In the meantime, we managed to get through those couple of awful days & the weekend was warm, but the humidity left & today after a chilly, yes overcast & chilly, it is now another one of those extraordinarily delightful days...lots of crisp, fresh Canadian air coming from the north...

I do love these days...just came home & opened all the windows & fresh air is all around...

& TW, my cats also love to lay on the porch in the sun, they move to wherever it is (but they even moved over when it is really hot into a shady spot...my porch is closed in & screened...as I have said often, my cats do not go outside...

right now the little one went right into the windowsill when I opened the windows in the room where the sun is streaming in...she will stay there until it goes behind the trees...

jan said...

Coreen, I envy your delightful weather. so glad one of us is having some good weater. I love to open windows and let the breeze and sunshine in. We can all enjoy your weather vicariously.

jan said...

Georgia, John is watching the olympic trials too. He always looks forward to the summer olympics.

jan said...

Carol and Georgia, sorry you are having such hot, humid weather. ]]

We are breaking 100 tomorrow and several days in the next. Oh well.

jan said...

RIP Nora Ephron.

jan said...

What Nora Ephron movies did you like? I liked them all: I think my favorite was When Harry met Sally. Of course, it didn't hurt that it starred 2 of my favorites, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. I liked the theme that 2 people can be good friends and find love together. It is a feel good movie. I hope TCM will run some of her movies this weekend.

Carol said...

Yes Jan..TW and I both loved Nora E also. TW bought me one of her books.. I Hate My Neck.. one year for my BD. We both loved it. I liked her movies and the articles she wrote. She often wrote on Huff Post and yesterday I saw their headline that she had beamed up. Pretty good timing too because I think Hell has moved in here.

Carol said...

This heat has taken all the wind outta my sails. Even if the house is cool..I go outside often and even when I'm in..I'm thinking of the critters..two and four legged..that have to spend time outside. That bothers me.

I have two thermometers outside hanging on the little pool house. Yesterday..around 4p or so..one read 110 and the other 104. They were in the shade. I brought another one that I had inside the house to see which of those two was right. On that one I got 104 also so I guess the 104 was correct.

I have avoided the news like the plague. The world is either on fire or drowning in too much rain. I thank God that none of us are involved in either. Thank you God!

I can't tolerate any of the political news. Greed and selfishness dominates there. I caught a glimpse of the Supreme Demon's work a couple of days ago. They want to make sure that greed and selfishness rules. It's disgusting. Most of them are disgusting.

Carol said...

The more I hear about the Travon Martin case..the more guilty I think Zimmerman is. Three facts seal the case for me. One..he killed the young fellow. Two..he got out of his vehicle to pursue Martin after the police told him not to. Three..he never identified himself as a neighborhood watch member. Second degree murder!

If either of those guys was stalking me..from the looks of them..I'd be more afraid of Zimmerman. If either could use that Stand Your Ground law..it should have been Martin even if they find that Martin did attack him. He was being stalked and could have been in fear for his life. My BS detector..which is pretty highly developed..sees and hears lots of problems with Zimmerman's story.

They say that Zimmerman passed a lie detector test. Yeah..you have to have a conscience to fail one. Also..many of the meds we take these days have to have an influence on the results since they measure pulse and blood pressure. Good thing they can't be used in court.

jan said...

Rough days at work. The heat does not help.

jan said...

And we have 2-3 more months of this.

Carol said...

Poor TW..her central AC unit fan went out and she's held up in her bedroom where she has a small window unit to keep that room extra icy when her central unit is running. Now it's just keeping her bedroom tolerable. One good thing is that she was within the last few days of the warranty on the unit. That was a blessing. When something like that happens to me..I'm usually a day over my warranty.

Carol said...

Oh..they're suppose to come fix it today..if they can find a fan motor and if they can work her in.

jan said...

I have had that happen. My sympathies Georgia.

Coreen said...

So all the tea leaves/crystal ball
readers got it wrong...big time...
and the Chief Justice saves Obama's
legacy...or maybe just further adds incentive to some fence sitters(independent voters that is) to make him a one-term president...will be interesting to
see how this plays come Fall...even though short-term there is lots of fist pumping cheering by the left...

as for obamacare...again nothing in that bill relieves those who actually pay for insurance from ever increasing premiums...but it does ensure that all Americans who do pay taxes will indeed pay more taxes...one way or another...

Carol said...

Coreen..I agree that health care law needs some work. I do understand the need to make it mandatory for people to buy health insurance to make the rest of the law work.
They must have a way to help those who really can't afford it though. The law has many problems that need to be fixed. Not sure how.

I know people who have health insurance available thru their work for a reasonable price but refuse to get it because they would rather buy some things that are more fun and let the rest of us pay for their health care. That's not right either.

Carol said...

TW did get her AC up and running by 10a this morning. Thank God. This is not the time for one to go out. She did know she could take refuse here or at the river house but she has two cats there to watch over.

Coreen said...

And this comment by a right wing
blogger Ed Morrissey at HotAir made
me laugh this a.m....after they found out it was the CJ that saved the day for Obama...

You may have to appreciate the Godfather movies to get it...

"But I didn't know until today that it was Barzini all along." I tell you, The Godfather explains everything....

Carol said...

Did you hear about the new obesity drug that just got approval. I found out who was making it, Arena(ARNA) Pharm., and put in a buy order for a hundred shares.

I have a little stock account that had a little money in it. The price was over 11 bucks so I put in a 10 dollar buy order. I thought that maybe I had gone too low but it did drop down to 9 something and bought at 10. It was up a little from there at close. I'm betting when people find out about that new drug it will sell like hot cakes. It's prescription. Anything that helps obesity is a good investment. I'll just stayed closely tuned in so that if they find out it also kills people I can pull out.

I recently bought a 100 shares of BMY recently and am up about 100 bucks. It's working on a new cancer drug.

Carol said...

Didn't get it Coreen. It's been a while since I've seen the Godfather.

Coreen said...

Good for you Carol, happy to see you trying to make some extra $$$
for yourself...but not so sure that would be considered a lib thing to do...

Heard the mention of the obesity drug in passing, but honestly had little interest...but your hunch may indeed be prescient...I do hope the price jumps a lot for your benefit...

Carol said...

And Coreen..I read that Robert's is up to something. Something about trying to gut the commerce clause..whatever that means. Wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

Carol said...

Coreen..I've made some great stock buys in the past but didn't sell when I should have because I didn't want a profit at the time because of taxes so I watched the bottom fall out. I learned some valuable lessons from that.

When I bought or watched stocks that I had hunches on..they went wild. When I bought stocks that financial people gave me hunches on..it was a bust.

Carol said...

I do have a hunch on that ARNA. Watch it. I'm giving a Carol buy recommendation.

Coreen said...

The Godfather...an absolutely great movie...& I like all three
though most people don't like 3, I thought it was full of poetic justice for Michael...

In the first 1972 movie...after the mob war is on & after Sonny is killed & to guarantee that Michael is not harmed, & to end the war, Don Vito Corleone meets with the heads of the 5 families (around the big table) & after hearing the comments by the heads...later in the car with Tom Hagen (his consigliere) he says

"Tattaglia's a pimp. He never could've out-fought Santino. But I didn't know until this day that it was Barzini all along."

Gotta love it...there are sooo many
memorable lines from thpse movies...

Carol said...

A big BOO to NBC for dumping Ann
Curry. They should have lost Matt Lauer instead. He's the real loser but you know how those idiot men are at the Networks. I hope NBC falls off the charts.

Coreen said...

Then remember to go with your gut call when you think it's time to sell Carol...you probably don't like Jim Cramer from cnbc Mad Money
& he is on between 9-10 a.m. daily(I love the guy, even though he talks so fast most of the time I can't remember what he says...& I don't invest based on his recommendations...& I know the libs don't like him because he said some things that they perceived as slamming obama, even though Cramer is a dem) but one of his constant reminders about sell/buy timing...

"Bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered.."

Coreen said...

Have no idea what/where you read
about CJ Roberts...but his opinion
did say that the mandate would be invalid under the commerce clause as it went well beyond the scope 'being in commerce', but then upheld the entire law based on the congress'
taxing powers...a twist that most of those 'experts' didn't see coming...much to the chagrin of the right...

He did not attempt to 'gut' the commerce clause, but rather his opinion is an effort to rein in the use of justifying whatever congress passes as valid under the commerce clause, which has been expanded routinely over the years to encompass just about any behavior...

This was indeed one of the main arguments by the petitioners that obamacare went so far beyond the scope of the commerce clause that it was unconstitutional & the adminstration that it was valid per the commerce clause...the oral argument seemed to imply that he & the other cons. judges were leaning toward pulling that authority back...but to the shock
of the right, well here we are...

You may find this humorous...this a.m. both cnn & fox initially reported that the mandate was overturned...& cnbc (I don't watch
msnbc ever) was showing that reuters said it was upheld...there
was total confusion for several minutes...add to that on the radio
my guy geraldo was first reporting it was overturned & then
not...chaos ruled for awhile...& yes the glee on the fox blondes turned glum very quickly....it was
sooo obvious...

Seven consequences of the health care ruling

Carol said...

Coreen..found this in what you would refer to as one of those liberal rags..The Nation.

Did Justice Roberts Set Booby-Traps in His Commerce Clause Ruling?

I didn't read the article for comprehension since I'm in a mode where I don't want to have to think hard and it's beyond the scope of my expertise.

You ought to be happy that I have been avoiding politics like the plague. You've recommended that I do that for long enough.

Instead..I was watching Anger Management..a new series with
Charlie Sheen and it's very cute. It's on FX. I'll have to put that on my iphone calender.

I also ran outside to try to catch the Space Station fly over. Weather guy said it would be at 9:18p. Had my timer set for that also. It was right on time. It was the first time I saw it. TW has already seen it twice.
I wasn't sure I could catch it with all my trees. I was on the phone with TW and she spotted it first. Then I caught sight of it. Just looked like a plane passing over.

I almost missed it because just as it came in view..Maggie..who I had on her leash out there..caught sight of something also and went wild.

Carol said...

And I did catch the mistake that CNN made with the health care ruling decision because Tru TV did also. Their people cross over to CNN. I was watching In Session..that I record every day to watch some of the trials they cover. On a break they said that it was overturned. I already knew it was upheld so I wondered what the heck was going on.

Did you hear what caused the mix up? Fox getting something wrong is nothing new. It's surprising when they actually get something right...or should I say..correct. They are always far right..but seldom ever..correct.

Carol said...

I caught another new show last night called Final Witness. It's a true crime drama from the point of view of the person who was murdered. Interesting perspective. I read that it didn't have that many viewers but I liked it. I do like true crime drama though.

I'd seen an interview with the father and only survivor of a family slaughter. The 16 year old daughter orchestrated the entire thing. She was mad because her parents made her stop seeing her loser boyfriend. She was very pretty, talented, sang in the church and set up the murder of her entire family. Her boyfriend and two other young people helped her. Her father miraculously survived.

It's hard for many to believe that these young pretty women can be so evil, but not me. I've seen it with my own eyes. Well..actually..I've met some of them. You wouldn't know it from talking with them. They can be pleasant enough. Evil is not always so easy to detect. It can be well concealed in a very attractive package..either male or female.

Carol said...

Coreen..with yesterday's little incident...I think that the Universe was just demonstrating how utterly ridiculous the news has become lately. It's all just a bunch of fluff..nothing close to what "the news" should be anymore. It's who can entertain the best. They are trying to get rid of anyone who even looks or sounds like a real journalist.

Maybe it's best to catch the news on one of the comedy news shows on late night now. At least there..you are suppose to laugh!
