Life is a Beach

Here we are in Wrightsville Beach, NC. It was very chilly when I took these pics yesterday.  It has warmed up today. It is beautiful. Very peaceful.  The sound of the surf drowns out all the little voices in my head that say "You should be doing something useful." I think I want to live here.

Here it is.

Carol, did you do something that let me in? I could not even post a comment. I then texted you to tell you about it and then all of a sudden, I was in.

jan said...

Pic 1 is where we are staying. We are on 2nd floor - just above ground level in the 4th one from your left.

jan said...

Pic 5 is a house I would like if I had lots of money. Pic 6 is taken from our balcony.

jan said...

Pic 7 is us. We went out and bought some warmer clothes at Walmart. Got a bargain on that stuff.

Last pic is a poor little beached sea creature. John says is a "man of war" he thinks. I don't know what it is. Maybe one of you can identify it.

Carol said...

Ahhhhhh!

Carol said...

Very nice. Just what I needed. I'm at the hairdressers now.

Coreen said...

Looks like you are definitely enjoying your seaside vacation Jan...

There is a definitely a soothing aspect to being close to the ocean...

if that is a man of war, steer clear as it is a poisonous stinging
creature...not sure if it is a jellyfish, seem to remember they
are not but sure can cause you problems if you step on one...

jan said...

Coreen,
We did keep our distance from the little sea creature. I hated to see it laying out away from the water, but did not touch it.

Coreen said...

As for your comments Carol...yes, my mother was vp of her union at the GE...

what does that have to do
with the issue of public unions & the trouble state & local govts are having with funding the health/pension plans for public union employees...which are usually the biggest cost to the budgets...

& what's your point about does she get a union pension Carol?...if you
think its a gotcha...you lose...just so you know the facts...GE retirees are paid a pension by the company...

And fyi, I never crossed a picket line...still won't...

being from a state that has no use for unions, not sure what your view of unions is...

Public unions are the subject of controversy because those that
negotiate the terms...politicians aren't paying them, taxpayers are...& as I have said often...when things are bad, those that are struggling to pay for their own & can't afford to cover themselves are not interested in having to pay for those that are not contributing to their benefits...

the mutual relationship that develops between those pols who make the agreements with other peoples money sooner or later annoy the payers...taxpayers that is...& yes historically dem pols have supported public unions in an effort to have a base of both voters & $$$ to get them re-elected, while that has proved beneficial to both sides, not sure that the taxpayers have benefited over time...as is being exposed today by the deficits the local govts are facing...

As far as the WAPO opinion piece from Ezra Klein, try again...his bias is obvious in everything he writes...he is a liberal & spins it to fit his view of the world...

fact is that the voters of Wis. overwhelmingly voted as they saw fit... too bad those that don't agree with that vote can't accept it...

Carol said...

And GE's money just falls outta the sky. None of us pay for the goods and products they make..that provide those pensions. Some people just don't value anything considered "public". That's a shame.

If it's a big corporation..it's OK even though we..the taxpayer have been bailing them out right and left.

Coreen said...

Carol, you don't have to buy any GE product or any other product from a company you don't like...that is the beauty of the good old capitalist usa...you are free to buy or not whatever you want...& those workers who built those products were & are paid for their services...so again what's your point...

Coreen said...

And the last time I checked Carol, you have repeatedly expressed your disdain & unhappiness
with the fact that there is a whole segment of the population that gets 'public' benefits...while others just keep working...& paying...so again what is your point...

Coreen said...

My final thought Carol...just so you know...my family's business was a union contractor (& yes I worked there)...only employed union plumbers, fitters, sheet metal workers, built buildings...& yes the business was very successful & the employees were paid well...

The trade unions were private unions that negotiated contracts with private companies for the wages & benefit pkges over the years...but as with most things it changed...in some part
because the consumer didn't want to pay the higher costs of things produced by the unionized employees....they were presented with cheaper choices...the best example...your favorite choice to shop...wally world...once the 'public' started looking out for their own welfare...being offeed products cheaper...private union power started to diminish...

I don't need any education about unions...& what they provided...

public unions difficulty is again the fact that those negotiating are not those paying....as with all govt entities its real easy to spend when you are usisng other people's money....& sooner or later there is a backlash...

Carol said...

Jan..your pics are great. I bet that walking on the beach is some good exercise.

jan said...

We walked on the beach this morning and late this evening. I love walking on the beach. It is great to have the waves lap up at your feet - never sure how far the water is going to come up. Love watching the little birds trying to find a tasty morsel. So much life out there and much of it not visible to the naked eye. There is just so much about it that soothes my soul.

jan said...

Before I met John, I had never spent any time on a beach. He used to go with his first wife to the Florida and Alabama beaches. We went a couple of times after we married, but I could tell there were a lot of memories there for him and I wanted to have "our" beach so we started coming to this beach. I don't think Bob ever wanted to go to the beach. We really did not vacation much- usually just drove to see family. Vacations are good. They are meant to renew the spirit and soul. At least I think they should.

jan said...

This afternoon we went to tour the Battleship North Carolina just outside Wilmington. We have been here a few times but had never been to see this ship. It was a good experience. I guess my problem with wars has kept me from going. My oldest son, Bill, and his family came here in 2006 and toured the battle ship and said they enjoyed it.

I took a bunch of pics of that and posted earlier to FB. If you all want to look them up there and I can post them here later too. It was worth while. It was a self tour.

I am reading a good book titled "Wild." It is recommended by Oprah. It is an autobio of a woman whose mother died when she was 22- and she felt her life fell apart. She decided to hike the pacific trail. The book is about her hike and her dealing with her mother's death. Started it last night and had a hard time quitting reading. She is a journalist.

So back to the "Wild"

Carol said...

Jan..I'd like to have you put up a post every day. Hey you can even get pics of what you're eating. The more the merrier. And details..I want details. You can leave out the 50 shades of gray. Actually 50 shades of gray would be another good title for two seniors on vacation.

Carol said...

What was the name of the book you were reading when I wanted you to read 50 shades? TW was saying that this guy Louis Zamperini is going to be on Jay Leno tonight. Is that who your book is about?

Carol said...

Yes Jan..being around the water is very rejuvenating..at least for me it is. Of course..I am a Scorpio..a water sign. I've got it covered at both places where I reside. And I don't have to be in that water..just near it.

Carol said...

It does kinda get me riled up when I think how so many don't respect teachers and police and fire people and nurses were in that group also. They have all been pretty under appreciated over the years also and the jobs they do are very important.

It's like those people should work to provide for everyone out of the goodness of their heart. I kinda have some experience with most of those groups of workers and know a little about how much they make and how hard they work for their money. Unions had a reason for being. They were created to force a little appreciation and protection. I also understand that many things that started as a good idea have become somewhat corrupt over the years.

I made a lot of financial sacrifices to teach. I loved doing it but I had to work lots of extra jobs just to make ends meet and that wasn't to have a lot of fancy things.

Yep..we had some nice vacations as teachers..which I had to work every one of them to make up the financial deficit. And when you are working the regular time as a teacher..it's not a 9-5 job. You worked all night and weekends during those regular work weeks. There was no overtime pay..no comp time.

Jan..I don't know if you remember when we were putting together that physical assessment course. We were putting in 80 hours a week to try and get that baby ready for the students. It was every night and weekend. We enjoyed doing it at the time. I remember all the evenings..weekends and holidays I worked preparing for my classes and writing tests.

I've been around a few public school teachers and see what they do and how much of their own money they use to buy stuff for their students.

I had a good friend years ago who was a cop..a detective. He was making something like 18 thou a year. He worked all the time. There was no overtime pay.

There seems to be an inverse relationship with how important the job you do is and how much you get paid to do it. It never made sense to me but so much in life doesn't make sense to me.

Carol said...

Well..I'm over the rain. We were pretty dry but I've had all that I want for the week but there's a good chance for more for the next three days. I've been lucky that it hasn't been as bad in my yard as it has in some areas around me.

Carol said...

Coreen..it doesn't bother me one thou as much to feed the poor and provide them a tiny income as it does to feed those blood sucker corporations we bail out.

jan said...

Having problem with computer. If you don't see me here, that is reason.

jan said...

Carol, the book I read was not by Louis Z. Cannot remember the name of author now.

jan said...

Not eating any interesting food yet. We did go next door last night and shared a seafood platter. Nothing to write home about or share a pic of. It was good, not exciting.

jan said...

The book I just finished "Garden of the Beasts" was written by Erik Larson - about pre WWII Germany and Hitler.

jan said...

Have not started 50 shades of Grey. I downloaded 3 new books to my Nook and brought it. I am liking biographies or auto bios at this time.

jan said...

... Beasts was a bio about a US diplomat and his daughter in German during 1933-1938. Writer used lots of letters and articles to write it --very well written.

Carol said...

Jan..I don't know what's going on with your commenting problems. I haven't had any problems lately. I know that Internet Explorer has problems but now use a Google browser. And I didn't do anything to get you in.

Had my little CE workshop yesterday. Can't say I learned anything real useful. It's mostly a pharmacology update and it covers new meds that we can't afford to use where I work. Can't say that I'm really that sorry of not getting to use any that they covered yesterday.

One thing that was nice was getting to see other NPs. I'm kinda isolated from the mainstream.

Carol said...

I'm wondering how that Florida pastor..who's been in the news before..can get by with hanging an effigy of the president on the lawn outside his church. IMO that is a threat against the president's life. And what do they say about visuals.."a picture is worth a thousand words"?

We have this mentally ill guy in jail here who somehow made a threatening call to the president. I'll bet he never gets out of jail.

When I saw patients at this nursing home here a while back..one that specialized in housing mentally ill people from across the country..there was this guy who was in there for threatening another president. I remember seeing a paper in the front of his chart saying that if he was ever moved anywhere to contact the secret service.

This pastor is not only threatening the POTUS..he's trying to stirs others into this hate. Is that legal? Of course I don't think they can arrest a regular joe for threatening to kill another regular joe unless he makes some sort of an attempt.

Carol said...

Glad you are having fun Jan. I did see your war ship pics on Facebook. They were neat. Was John ever in the military?

Sorry you haven't found any great food yet. Keep looking. You should be down this way. We have such good food. Did you like the food down here when you lived here? I don't find too many places that I just love the food. IMO..La is very good. Chicago is a close second. I wasn't impressed with California..or the PNW..or New York. Each of those places had some good stuff but overall...I wasn't impressed.

In all your travels..where was your favorite food? How's the food in NM? I need to go and check it out for myself.

jan said...

good morning friends. I am sleeping so much later here. I don't wake up with so much on my mind. I guess all "on my mind" stuff comes from working and taking care of a home and living close to family.

jan said...

Carol, lots of CE stuff I attend is pretty worthless to my work, but have to have it. I think we would all be better off with fewer drugs. When growing up the only drug in my parents' little cabinet over the bathroom sink was aspirin and vicks vapo rub.

jan said...

John was not in the military. He said that he always had a deferment. He was 4D which was ministerial.

jan said...

We went to downtown Wilmington and walked around late yesterday afternoon. The last time we were here was about 10-12 years ago and we went downtown. At that time there were lots of antique stores and little craft and artsy stores. Now there are a few of those but there are lots of stores boarded up and for sale. It is rather sad. I guess most people who come to the beach are young and not interested in that kind of thing.

jan said...

The only street that was pretty active was on the river. they were setting up for a music show - the Red Hot chili Peppers. We didn't stay for that.

On the way home, stopped at the Costco store and bought some shrimp, corn on cob and some raw veggies. Had a nice supper out on the balcony - then another walk on the beach until almost dark.

jan said...

Read some of my "Wild" book last night and went to sleep about 11 and up at 8 am. I never sleep this late at home. My feet and legs hurt when I go to bed from walking on beach - not used to it. But discomfort is gone when I wake up.

jan said...

Whatever problem I had with posting on your blog must have fixed itself. I did have some problems with my browser and had to reinstall it and then recreate all my bookmarks, but I was able to do it and now everything is ok.

Carol, did you get a haircut?

Carol said...

Out at the camp on my iPhone. My new boat man came and finished up all that I needed doing and now she ready to fish. Tomorrow might have been a good day but it will be too busy out here and neighbor is suppose to work on changing some ceiling tiles at the house.

Carol said...

Jan..you've become pretty cyber savvy. I'm proud of you and the rest of us also. We just have to approach it without being intimidated and try a lot of trial and error.

Many..our age are too afraid of the computers and the Net. I'm glad I'm not. I'm still in awe of it all.

Carol said...

Yesterday..while at my conference.. I went out to my truck to get something. I had to cross a little patch of grass and I saw that the grass was all soaking wet. The cement in the parking lot was dry and it didn't look like it had rained. While I was standing there pondering that I felt my legs getting cool. I looked down. The sprinkles in grass were on. They were so low to the ground, with such a fine mist, that I hadn't noticed. When I finally pondered what was going on..my pants were soaking wet. Duh.

jan said...

LOL Carol, too funny about the grass. That could have been me.

jan said...

ditto on the net and computers. I could not live without them now. I bought my 1st one in 1984 while working on my doc in Austin. They were just coming out. There were 2 that other students were buying - the Radio Shack TRS 80 and the Macintosh. Like a dumbass I bought the TRS 80 - mainly because the printer that worked with it was letter quality. I then had to take lessons on how to use it. The computer and printer cost me $4000. and the lessons were extra $150. It was a life saver though. Never regretted it. If I had it to do all over again, would by the Mac however.

Have not had one headache since being on vacay. I have had frequent ones for several years. My doc wanted to do an MRI on my head. He thought I might have a brain tumor. I declined . I suspected it was just due to stress and tension. Sure enough, I am right.

jan said...

Just got back from the YMCA. We belong to one in Alb and they have a little reciprocity thing here, which is nice. It is free to go for 1st 3 trips- after that, will cost $5.00/each. We went there to swim in the pool. Very nice Y.

We also found the movie theatre. We want to see the "...Marigold hotel..." It is showing. Might go tomorrow afternoon.

jan said...

I still could have a brain tumor. I read they are pretty frequent in older people without causing problems. I also read that many of us have defects and if we go fishing for them with scans and MRI's we are sure to find something. Unless I have some pretty bad symptoms, I will decline.

jan said...

I too thought it was a pretty serious thing to threaten or even indirectly threaten the POTUS.

Georgia said...

Jan, really, the Marigold Hotel is a gem. I'll probably purchase it when it comes out on DVD, to chuckle again.

Georgia said...

Your beach pics look so nice, I may ride over to Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, just before the Galveston Ferry, tomorrow. It's about 50 miles or so south of Beaumont, Tx. It was devasted by Ike in 2008... I think that was the year. Anyway the beaches are much prettier than going down to Holly Beach here. The water there is brown from the Mississippi...

Georgia said...

I have no one to go with me, but may go anyway. Been a bad couple of days and I need to clear my head.

Georgia said...

Jan, the book I'm talking about is called "Unbroken" by Laura Hilenbrandt...she also wrote "Seabiscuit". She has chronic fatigue syndrome and it took several years to write. It's about Louie Zamperini a 95 yr. old WW2 vet and his miraculous survival in Japanese prison camps, only to survive, come home, went with his wife to a Billy Graham conference, accepted Christ, then went back to Japn and sought out his captors, particularly,
"The Bird", an executioner and hugged them and forgave them.

Carol said...

We had a 80% chance of rain today and it never came...which I was happy about since I was working to try to charge up my boat battery

My boat guy had cleaned up the wiring and reconnected this old bilge pump I have on the boat. It worked some of the time but wasn't reliable. He thought he had it working. I went after a rain and it hadn't come on. I have a new battery and didn't want it under water every other week because the boat filled up with rain water.

My last poor battery was a submarine for weeks at a time. I'd find it after it had been under water for a while and use my little portable bilge pump to get the water down below the connections and then bump that dumb pump and it would come on. Unfortuately it wouldn't come on when it was supposed to.

Today I checked the boat..was going to start her up and let her run for a while and the battery was dead. It's a new battery. I figured it had something to do with that dang bilge pump. I tried to charge up my battery and my charger kept saying it was fully charged. It wasn't..it was dead. Sometimes it seems there is a polterquest hanging out in that boat.

I wasn't sure whether it was my charger or that battery that was causing my problem. I called my new boat guy and left a message for him to check it out when he got a chance. A few minutes later..I turned around and he was walking up.

It was that dang bilge pump causing all the problems. He changed it out and put in my new fish aerator. My lights are working. Then I spent the rest of the day charging up my battery. Couldn't do that if it rained.

We still have a chance of rain tomorrow but not as big. I have my mowing and pool vacuuming to do so it will probably rain. Oh well..God will have spoken. Not like either of those tasks am I dying to do.

I got in a little cuisinart ice cream maker I ordered from Amazon.com. last week. You freeze this container in the freezer for two days and then throw in your ingredients..it churns it and 20-30 minutes later..you have ice cream. It sounded so cool even though I don't really eat much ice cream. It wasn't a bad price because it was an older model.

It makes a quart and a half of ice cream. I got my ingredients today. I decided to make vanilla with chocolate chips and chopped pecans. Doesn't that sound good.

I read the reviews on Amazon to get ideas. That's one of my fav things about Amazon..people share a lot of info in those reviews. I've bought just about everything on Amazon..from books to trolling motors. You want it..they have it. And it's usually a very good price. I saved a couple of hundred dollars compared to what I would have spent here locally on that trolling motor.

The reviews gave a lot of good tips and what you need to do to get the best results on the ice cream. Now I'm trying to decided if I want to use a recipe with or without eggs. I bought some just in case. I did opt for the half and half and heavy whipping cream. Bad girl..bad girl. It said it lasts for weeks in the frig so I won't eat much.

Carol said...

Oh..and I finally picked my first three cucumbers today. Let's see..that's about a thousand hours of work per cucumber. I hope I can taste all that effort. I'm still waiting for my tomatoes to turn red. I'm starting to wonder if they are RED tomatoes.

Actually I planted them on April 22 so that's only been 49 days. Seems longer..like an eternity. When are they going to come up with an instant variety of home grown veggies? Oh..that's called a farmer's market huh. Well...we don't have many of those around here.

Carol said...

Young people aren't interested in antiques Jan? Just when we became some. Oh darn.

I also love those kind of stores. That's the kind of stores they had in New Brunsfels..the downtown area. Lots of old downtown areas have them. The Houston, old..gay part of town..had some. I wonder if they are still there.

Carol said...

Have you found any really great food yet Jan? I know you aren't one of those..live to eat..kind of people like I am. Food is one of my fav parts of a vacation. Actually..one of my fav parts of life. It hurts when I can't find any when I travel. One of the worst places I've ever eaten when I traveled was Mexico. Yuk. There was this one little hotel..in the middle of nowhere.. where they had some good crusty homemade bread and soup but it was rare to find anything good to eat there on the two times I traveled there. I remember once having to go to a grocery store for a decent meal..and it wasn't a deli kind of thing. I think I got some crackers and tuna and lemons. That's sad when that is your best option.

I remember going up to the PNW with my best friend neighbor. She moved from here years ago. The biggest problem there was the lack of seasoning. The food was good otherwise. We carried Tony's seasoning with us. Sometimes I wish I had my own salad dressing..especially when the restaurant doesn't have a homemade house dressing. I can't do any bottled dsg. I can taste the preservatives. I really can.

Carol said...

I've been hearing on the news..which I only half ass listen to..that some guy was arrested for beating his 10 year old stepson.. with a belt.. for missing catching a ball when they were playing catch in their backyard. A neighbor recorded it. That is dang crazy. I hope they throw him under the jail.

There was this guy here..I worked with his wife at the U here..who was chasing his son around the bases with a bat for not playing well at a little league game. Some parents take that far too serious. They should all be banned from attending those games.

Carol said...

Another interesting tidbit: Did y'all hear about that contestant on AGT who lied about being injured in Afghanistan? He was on last week and really had a tear jerker story. He was a singer..I didn't think he was that great but his sad story put him forward. I was also a little skeptical about his story. I think I've developed a little lie detector talent after all my years of working in corrections. A few lies can get past me but not many anymore.

This guy stuttered but didn't when he sang. That's not unusual. But he also lied about being injured in the war. I think he was in the service for years and maybe even went to war but wasn't physically injured there. Of course I think that anyone who went to war was actually injured mentally when they went to war. I really don't hold his lying to get attention on AGT but I think he also may have lied to get some other benefits here from some agency. They may all lie to some extent to get a little edge. Remember the chicken catcher? Was he really?

I saw another interview with that guy yesterday. He can cry at the drop of a hat. Maybe someone ought to notice his acting skills.

Entertainment alert:

Georgia, " Unbroken' is next on my reading list. I downloaded it on my e-reader too. Plan on starting it today or tomorrow.

While living in Louisiana I never went to the beach. John is the one who introduced me to a beach. He has always loved them. Now I do too.

jan said...

Watched the Belmont yesterday too. Too bad about "I'll have another"

Carol, hope your battery holds out and you are able to get out and catch some fish.

jan said...

My son and his wife gave us an ice cream thing like you are talking about Carol - for christmas. We have not used it yet. Our little side by side freezer is never empty enough to get those things in it. It has 2 bowl shaped things (both pretty small). I look forward to hearing how your ice cream turns out.

John and I each have our favorite ice creams - mine is Hagen Daz, Vanilla Swiss Almond. John's is Ben and Jerry's, Vanilla Toffee Crunch. I love home made ice cream but so much trouble to make. But Carol, you inspire me.

jan said...

We have only been out to eat once while here. We went next door and had a fried seafood platter. It was OK, but not great.

jan said...

You are right Carol. I like good food but do not live to eat like you do.

We went to a little grill the first night (forgot about that) and I had a veggie burger and home made fries. It was the best I have eaten. Beef does not agree with me so I hardly ever eat it.

jan said...

I woke up in the middle of night with terrible pain in my right leg. I am pretty sure it was sciatica. After about 15 minutes I got up and took an ibuprofen. In about 20 minutes, it was much better - so sciatica must have been it. It was excruciating. At first I thought ' Oh god, I have bone cancer." I have been walking barefoot on the beach- and sitting to read a lot. I am not sure where the sciatica came from.

jan said...

I think some of the best food I have eaten is on the ships we have been on. Now that is a good place to go to eat. Cruises are John's favorite vacation. He loves the food.

John lives to eat too.

jan said...

Carol, talking about your cucumber. Don't you have a food processor?

jan said...

Carol, be careful making your ice cream. Should cook the stuff if you use eggs.

jan said...

I remember going home one time shortly after I became a nurse. My mother and dad made homemade ice cream and I made her throw it out because she had put eggs in the mix and not cooked it. What a pissant I was!

Well my day and probably tomorrow will be spent without water in my house. There is a broken water main at HWY90 and LA 108 (like ya'll know where that is) and since it's Sunday they cannot locate a replacement valve.I rode up there to talk to them and as usual the men were all standing around spitting skoal, pointing at this and that, and scratching their nuts......It's a 36 inch line and nearly all of Sulphur is completely out of water. Wanted to ride to the beach but may stick around in case my house catches on fire, I may salvage something.
Bad to realize you have no water until after 2 cups of coffee and lots of fiber for supper last night....LOL

Georgia said...

Wal-Mart, Burger King, and lots and lots of businesses and fast food joints are on this stretch of hwy. I've already been to Wal-Mart and purchased 12 gals of water. Takes 4 gals to flush....I told my neighbor behind me, if he sees me with some tissue in my hand and sneaking out behind my lawn mower shed not to look.....he laughed....

Georgia said...

Glad I took a shower late yesterday evening and washed this long pony tail hair.... They said it may be late tomorrrow before it's fixed....

and today of all days, I think there is a 10% chance of rain...I've got several 5 gal. buckets I may put out in case I catch that 90% chance that it won't rain...!!!!!!!!

Cooking eggs..got it covered Jan. Ms Safety here is not going to miss something like that. Gastroenteritis is NOT my friend.

I've done a full day's work already. I went to the camp and did chores there. Then did my every morning chores here. I made my ice cream custard. I heated to 160. I even measured the temp. It's cooling in the frig for making my ice cream later. The most time consuming part was standing over the pot stirring. When I got that in the frig..I went out and vacuumed the pool. Now I'm on break. My camp neighbor is here changing some ceiling tiles now.

Yes Jan, I am very interested in the events of WW2....had a great uncle that flew B-52 bombers and crashed and was in a Jap POW camp as well....Another of my great uncles was the commander of a submarine that was surfaced and taking on Jap planes raining machine gun fire on the sub.....he gave the order to clear the deck and he remained on the outside firing at the planes until he succomed to his sub diving to avoid more machine gun fire.. There is a Veteran's home in Jennings and he has a mural of himself painted on the wall there. Cmdr. Gilchrist.

Georgia, sorry about your water woes. Good idea to get some gallons of water. Hope its fixed soon.

jan said...

right leg uncomfortable again. I will take an ibuprofen. wonder what got that started???

jan said...

Georgia, the book "Garden of Beasts" was about pre wwII Germany and the rise of Hitler. The book ended before the war started.

jan said...

At night we are watching TCM. Old movies are good. Don't like having to watch commercials. We are so spoiled by the DVR.

Georgia said...

yep, last night I tried to watch "Jezebel" on TCM but it's just a little too old....Bette Davis is one of my favs.......

I posted something that didn't show up and now there's stuff here that wasn't earlier. Weird.

Jan..I'm not sure if it the extra walking or the extra sitting..reading.. that is getting to your back. I don't think it is the walking. Sitting is horrible for backs..especially low backs. That's why my inmates have so much back pain. All they can do is sit. Besides walking..I recommend back extension exercises..ie the Cobra. Lay on the floor on abdomen. Hands under face. Slow deep breaths. Slide hands to side of chest and lift the chest off the floor with pelvis still on the floor. Slow deep breaths..don't hold you breath. Count to 10 and go back down to 10 slow deep breaths. Repeat.

Now they are saying on the KPLC TV site, it may be 24 hrs. Good Grief..........they are saying to conserve water?????? Hell, I'm doing a great job, I don't even have a "trickle" coming out of the faucet

LSU is rained out until tonight, deciding game to see who goes to the College World Series between these 2 teams, so I guess it's the Yankees and Mets on TBS....

Georgia said...

so, we know what Coreen is doing right now.....LOL

Coreen said...

Sorry about not having water Georgia...I know that routine with my well when we lost electricity...

Forgot are you close to Carols?...

And yes the game is on...tv & radio...

Jan, I know when I walk a lot, my low back winds up killing me later...& I try to not sit long, have to keep getting up to just move around, whether at home or my office...1/2 hour then my back does start to hurt...

What can I say, the aging process takes its toll...I just came in from washing the car & like I said
my back & legs hurt...bending to
wash the lower portion is getting harder all the time...

In the meantime...you are enjoying the beach, so I guess that makes up for the pain...

Carol, you got another cooking gadget!!...couldn't resist the temptation...

Coreen said...

Georgia...agree about respecting the veterans...sorry for your family's loss during that time...

jan said...

I think the problem is I am up moving around more at home. I probably am sitting for longer periods of time. I don't usually read this much. I sit when I watch TV but am up and down all the time even when watching a movie.

jan said...

Georgia, we watched Jezebel last night. Setting was Louisiana before civil war. When people got yellow fever, they were shipped off to the leper colony in LA. I had forgotten there was a leper colony. Henry Fonda who had been Bette Davis boyfriend left and went East after they had a fight and he married a woman from the north and brought her back. It ended with Henry getting yellow fever and Bette convincing his wife that he would probably be more likely to survive if she (Bette) went with him to the leper colony - the last scene was Bette up in a horse drawn cart with Henry being take away.

jan said...

Crappy way to end a movie.

jan said...

Coreen, glad to see you back.

Thanks for back tips from all of you.

Carol said...

OMG..Häagen-Dazs couldn't top my HM ice cream. It didn't even take the entire 30 minutes. It said to wait until last 5 minutes to add any extra stuff so I was and my ice cream was so frozen that I had to stop the maker and add my chocolate chips and stir them in. I didn't put in the pecans. I put it in my little storage container and in the freezer for a little over an hour. I sprinkled a few chopped pecans on top. WOW!

Carol said...

Coreen..TW knows she's welcome here anytime. She lives approximately 20 miles from here.

Georgia said...

Thanks to all water well wishers...it's still off, but it's better than being without electricity..!!!! Wow Jan, thanks for the movie report on "Jezebel". I think I saw it years ago but I've slept since then....

Georgia said...

good heavens....what a subject matter for 1938....I think that's when it was made.

Georgia said...

well Coreen....your Yankees have come back...I surely really never cared for the Mets but they just drafted in the first round Gavin Ceccini a high school player from Barbe high school....straight out of high school, not bad.....

Georgia said...

he is from Lake Charles

Georgia said...

Carol....pass some ice cream through the blog please but leave those damn pecans off mine...LOL

Georgia said...

Or as Paula Deen says PEEEE-CANS, please......and she lives in Savannah????????????

Georgia said...

Thank you Coreen for your coments about my "Heroes" ....my Mother watches the Military Channel all the time and just crys and crys....she says "I hate the Japs", but go figure, she drives a SUBARU.....

Georgia said...

I drove imports for years and years, the engineering of those cars just seemed better, and expensive... Now, I drive a GMC Sierra crew cab American gas guzzler.....13 mpg. Was hoping to use it to travel but had no clue I'd get a disability retirement one year after buying it.

Georgia said...

Fortunately, I don't have to drive much so I'll live with it....

Georgia said...

uh oh Coreen....tied up

Coreen said...

Carol, looks like one of your old tv favs has called it quits...

Dylan Ratigan walks away from
cable show....wants to do something instead of just railing about it...interesting to see what
he winds up doing...
Dylan Ratigan leaves msnbc

Carol said...

Interesting. I wonder what Dylan has up his sleeve? I like him. He makes sense. He's logical. I couldn't tell you which way he leans politically. I would guess Independent.

Haven't watched him lately because I just can't spend much time with politics anymore. It's too depressing and it seems like those who are still interested aren't serious about seeing anything new happen. They don't want to move out of their comfort zone.

Carol said...

I wonder if he wants to get into politics??

We went to see the movie "...Marigold Hotel" Yesterday. What a delightful movie. No younger people in the movie. Yet it was full. Few empty seats by the time it started.

The gulf has been flooding and read the rain is coming here. It is cloudy this morning and 80% chance of rain. Will get our beach walk in soon. I think we are going to NC aquarium today. From map does not look to far away.

jan said...

Found 2 perfect shells yesterday. Now I can go home. I will take a pic soon.

jan said...

Happy Monday to all. Hope each of you has a good day. We are planning trip to the NC aquarium. I will post some more pics this afternoon.

Not raining here yet but very cloudy and overcast here.

jan said...

Back from the aquarium. It was amazing. Took some pics but most did not turn out well. I needed to change my settings but was so dark in there I could not see to do it. I was only about 25 miles from here so a nice little drive.
