The Littlest Angel, Christina Taylor Green. Let us not forget her!

I found this on Huffington Post:

"Christina Taylor Green was only 9, but the third-grader already was an aspiring politician. Her parents say Christina had just been elected to the student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School and had been interested in politics from a young age. She already had told her parents she wanted to attend Penn State and have a career that involved helping those less fortunate than her. The brown-eyed athletic girl loved to swim with her 11-year-old brother Dallas, her lone sibling. Her mother, Roxanna Green, said Christina also loved animals, singing, dancing and gymnastics. She also was the only girl on her Canyon del Oro Little League baseball team. Her grandfather, former major-league pitcher Dallas Green, managed the 1980 world champion Philadelphia Phillies. Christina's father, John Green, is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Christina was born on the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001."

She came into this world on a tragic day. She left on another tragic day but I feel she left a message. She wants us to all learn to get along and work together. Her life had meaning. She should not be forgotten.

I heard her message.

Another message in this horrible tragedy is what do we do with the mentally ill? I work in my local jail that is not only a jail, it's a mental institution. Every jail in every city in this country is also a mental institution. Most are not really set up for that but it's the only option for the mentally ill person who is too dangerous to be left on the street. Many are arrested for petty crimes, domestic disputes or are out on the streets digging in garbage cans and irritating local businesses.

Many of these people even come from nice families but those families can't keep these people at home and I'm sure some are glad there is a safe place for them to go even if it is a jail but it is not permanent housing.

They come to jail, they do their time, they get medication and limited psychiatric care and after they do the time for whatever they are arrested for, they return to the street. That doesn't usually last long because they may not be able to get their medication or even want to or they don't have anywhere to go. They are just placed out the door to the streets. Hopefully, while they are out of jail they don't do harm to themselves or others. We worry when we know one of our mentally ill inmates is being released but the jail can't keep them after they have served their time.

There are many stories where some have killed themselves or committed horrible crimes because that was the only way they can get a long sentence and more permanent housing. Crime is their only option for treatment.

I hear critcism from the media that the military or that college that had dealings with the shooter should have reported him to let others know that this fellow was mentally unstable. There's a lot involved there. It would not have been appropriate for either to actually diagnose this guy as mentally ill and possibly reporting that might have broken some of the confidentiality rules of those institutions. I'm sure both possibly recommended he get some help. Maybe, just maybe, shooting and killing a bunch of innocent people is how he was able to get help???

I am so glad you posted this in honor of Christina Taylor Green, Carol. People have been so busy pointing their finger at Sarah Palin, that they've missed many of the other true tragedies of this horrific mass shooting.

Also important is pointing out that a mentally ill person did this. There doesn't have to be any 'logical' meaning behind what he did.

A really beautiful little girl. And so sad, as well as the fact of all the other people who were shot - some killed, some not.

It also sounds like those brave people who tackled him and grabbed his gun, before he could reload saved many lives.

I heard he's not cooperating with the police either. I guess being mentally ill doesn't mean you are stupid.

I'm going back to see if I need to catch up on last nights posts.

But first, I want to say that I realized yesterday that you thought Emma's symptoms may be an allergy rather than illness. I should have mentioned that she doesn't have allergies (nor did her mother). For that I'm glad, because I've had allergies (sometimes severe, and so has my son). When I said it was a miracle, I didn't mean to insinuate that her symptoms were completely gone, but that they were less severe and she was in a better mood and not as warm. She had a much better night last night, but I can still hear the congestion (I was originally afraid it was going to go into her lungs, which I saw listed as a symptom of Influenza B), but I can tell she's already on the mend. The reason I connected it to the flu, is because yesterday I got the email that she was definitely exposed to it on Friday, and I felt so glad it had been included in her flu shot.

Owning a Pet Provides Health Benefits

Carol, I was so surprised when I read your last post on the previous thread (I always start from the bottom up). You mentioned allergies, and Em has been exposed to all those things (ha.. even the dirt), as was her mother once we moved out to this mini ranch. I didn't have pets when I was young or even when my son was born.

"Pets will alert their owners when something is not quite right within the home. A barking dog, hissing cat or squawking bird can alert pet owners to the smell of smoke or the sound of an intruder."

That is so true, even with cats. My cats will look in the direction of a door or window, long before I know anyone is coming, or anything is happening. It always alerts me.

Maggie may not be a watch dog (way too sweet and cute, for one thing), but I'm sure she keeps you informed.

So good to have Jan back though.

Coreen said...

Well guys not much to report...just another foot or more on its way...no one is saying that
the storm may veer away (what I was hoping would happen)...snow not to start until late
tonight (like midnight & through Wednesday)...

With a little luck I will be out of the house Friday...(& yes, we have plenty of the 'basics'-milk, bread, eggs...expect stores to be jammed today, but I went yesterday...& they were busy then...

By the way this storm is courtesy of what hammered the south, teaming up with what is out Solar's way...

As far as all the internet/media discussion about the tragic events in Arizona, honestly, it is not a topic of conversation with most people I have actually spoken with here...

Beyond the coming snowstorm, what continues to
be the most pressing concerns are their own
personal problems...more particularly how to
make enough money to pay their bills...Yesterday, 2 clients called to let me know that they had been laid off...one person
was among 40 people that the company tapped on
their shoulders & escorted them all out of the
building on Friday...no cleaning out their desks, etc... the other was laid off from a
high paying job in NYC ($100,000+) & now can't pay the mortgage & the bank is blowing smoke
about modifying the loan terms...these are people's real problems, not the national events
that while they certainly affect those that were involved, are not of immediate or utmost concern to most...

People may acknowledge those events as the constant reporting over the weekend would not permit one to not know what occured, but since there is minimal impact on their daily lives, the media barrage of fixing blame & setting an agenda, just isn't a prime concern to most people...

Chloe, sorry to hear that your dearest Em is
not feeling well, but I know for sure she is
getting the best of care...you (& I suspect your husband as well) are doing great at helping to care for Em & I am sure you are as happy to be doing it as Em is happy to have you in her life...

Jan, welcome home...glad you enjoyed your cruise...

jan said...

Chloe, so glad little Em is on the mend.

Carol, thanks for posting the story about Christina Green. What a beautiful little girl.

I was going to post a picture of my little granddughter, Abigail. She is one year old today. I will post it later. She is walking now. I don't get to see her often as her mom and dad both work and so do I. By evenings I am too tired or lazy to get out and go see her.

I did get to see some of Abigail's 1st steps at Christmas. She was so cute taking those first steps. I also got to see her little cousin's (Landon) 1st steps at Thanksgiving. It was so funny for me to watch both of these developmental milestones in the 2 babies. Landon would not take steps until he seemed to have his balance. You could just see him hold out his little arms and cautiously take 2-4 steps and then fall on his little butt. Abigail was totally different in her steps. She would throw up her little arms and just take off like she was going to run. We would have to catch her because she would pitch herself forward as she would take those first steps. Getting her balance first did not seem to be an issue with her.

jan said...

Hi Coreen, so good to see you (so to speak) back here. How long have you been snowed in? I feel so bad for your clients and others who have lost jobs and are struggling to make ends meet.

Carol, I completely agree about the mentally ill. At least jail offers warmth and food. We have so many homeless here and most probably suffer from mental problems. We are just a couple of blocks from the mental health center. we live in Univ area where lots of health care services are available. On most days, on my walk, I pass men and women who are obviously suffering from a mental disability of some kind. After spending 3 summers in a mental institution as a student one summer and with students 2 summers, I don't have any fear of people with these disorders. They are not much different than you and me in many ways if they are taking their meds on a regular basis.

Almost forgot, again the economic realities that are all around, my favorite local weatherman, Geoff Fox, who has been on local CT news for 26 years...well Channel 8 is not renewing his contract, so he is out of a job as of the end of February...he is still on the evening news & has not mentioned it, there have been newspaper articles in all the CT papers, & there has been an overwhelming show of support for him (not that it matters one wit in the end) & in addition to losing his familiar voice & his knowledge of weather events, just a couple of weeks ago my other favorite weather guy from CBS early show NYC, Dave Price was let go as well...

jan said...

Well, gotta go. It is 13 degrees out but I need to get in a walk and swim. I need to get after those lbs I gained on the trip. I still have not weighed. Will do that next week.

jan said...

Carol, I just went back and read some stuff you and Chloe wrote on previous post. We were scheduled to go to Tulum but just wimped out. It was the last day and the Tulum excursion was going to be 7 hours. I was feeling sick to my stomach and john was not doing to good either. We had just "run out of steam" I am sorry to have missed it, but considering that John has had 3 fainting spells in 18 months, I didn't want to take a chance.

Who are you all talking about "Ted" ???

jan said...

Coreen, so sorry to hear about your weather man. I hope something turns around for him. Like you, we have our favorite local news and weather casters here. They become like old friends.

Carol said...

Jan I posted that story last night because I thought it was one of our kiddies BDs today. Put up your post. I just felt the need to acknowledge that little angel. On short lunch break.

jan said...

I just remembered something from our trip. On our flight from New Orleans to Houston, John's seatmate was Corky Ballas' brother. If you don't watch Dancing with the Stars you may not remember who Corky Ballas is. He danced with Florence Henderson and his son, Mark Ballas danced with Bristol Palin. This came up because we were talking about dogs and told him about our neighbor's dog who is the brother of Stump, the best dog in show 2-3 years ago. He said "well, I have a famous brother also." And - you now know the rest of the story. BTW, he said he met Sarah and Bristol and he thought they were very nice people.

Carol said...

That's cool your meeting that guy Jan. I remember both of his brothers. When do they start up the dancing again?

Carol said...

Sorry about your friends and clients Coreen. These are scary economical times. Seems like so many are just a deep breath away from hard times.

Carol said...

I was reading about the shooter guy's family. My heart really goes out to them. You really never know how your kids could turn out. They are facing the loss of their son and without much support since people will be blaming them. Already heard that. Mental illness can affect anyone. Makes me glad I didn't have any.

jan said...

Carol, I am ready for DWTS and Idol.

We have been watching news. Best part was clips of all the folks who have been filmed tripping and falling. Poor Hillary tripped getting on an airplane and so they started looking at all the presidents and others in the past who have been caught on film in those most embarrassing moments. I remember they were always catching Pres. Jerry Ford tripping or hitting someone with a golf ball.

jan said...

Parents have no guarantee as to how their kids will turn out. Its a crap shoot.

Carol said...

Coreen, hope you stay warm and safe and don't get too snowed in. We're getting down in the low to mid 20s here tonight and the next couple of nights. That's not good in my paper and window shack.

It didn't get out of the 40s today. I even wear my longjohns to work and never do feel too warm. My AC/heaters will be huffing and puffing but I'm glad I have them and not those space heaters. Mary already called to see if I wanted to evacuate. Maggie and I will cuddle up and be OK.

Maggie doesn't seem to be bothered by the cold. When I take her out, she just takes her time with her poopy routine while I'm dancing around and begging her to hurry.

Coreen said...

Carol, too bad about you guys getting such cold
weather, try to keep you & Magster warm...everyone else too...saw that Jan mentioned 18 this a.m.

No sign of snow yet, but all of the reports
say minium of 1 foot, maybe 18"....I do not look forward to the next couple of days...as long as we do not lose electric or heat we should be ok...

When I saw this, it made me think of Solar...

HEY GUY IS THIS WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN UP TO LATELY!!!....

Didn't see you sneak in Jan.

Hey, tomorrow is the Dr. Phil show with Ted. Did you ever hear about him Jan? Quite a bit happened while you were gone. A long story over a short time. He was a homeless guy panhandling for money by doing his barotone annoucing voice. He was born with this nice voice and did some studying in announcing before he dumped his family and hit the streets. Besides being homeless, he had quite a rap sheet with petty crimes.

Someone he was panhandling recorded him and put it on youtube. The media found it and took him in and made him an celebrity, overnight. Crazy world these days.

He had a wife and at least 9 kids, some from his druggy street girlfriends. His ex-wife even took some of them in. Tomorrow Dr. Phil will do a show having him confront the family he left behind.

Carol said...

Last night I caught a little of an interview Anderson Cooper had with the patients of the little angel, Christina. My heart goes out to those parents. I get this feeling that her parents may have known that their little girl's life would be short. I don't know why I feel that way but I see it in their eyes.

Coreen said...

Carol, did you catch that Ted Williams was detained in LA after an altercation with a daughter, apparently no arrests though...

Think maybe its all part of the setup for the
Dr. Phil confrontation...cynical me....
Ted Williams Detained by LAPD

Carol said...

I did see that Coreen. I think his daughter started before the show was aired.

I don't usually care much for Dr. Phil but this is something that needs to come out. Teddy doesn't deserve to be a celebrity. The public does need to see the other side of this Cinderfella story.

Carol said...

I know it because I work with those from the trenches. Most people are naive about it all.

Carol said...

I guess it is more like....my fair gentleman.

Carol said...

I did see a little preview of the show. Ted had the look of a deer caught in the headlights on his face.

Carol said...

Finally, tonight on Racheal, they are discussing the important issues...mental illness and looking at gun safety laws. It's not about pointing fingers at who is to blame or continuing the bickering. We have some serious issues to solve. Maybe something good will come of this. I pray that will be the case.

jan said...

Carol, thanks for telling me about this Ted. We had limited news on the ship.

" It is 13 degrees out but I need to get in a walk and swim."

Jan, You are so much tougher than me. It is 26 here this morning, and I wouldn't even consider walking in a temperature like that unless I was running to a warm car (and hopefully the sun will b shining this morning before I have to). You are both devoted 'and' courageous.

I hope you will let us know how the Dr. Phil interview goes, Carol. I'm not going to watch it, but would like to hear what happens.

Coreen, thanks for the good wishes for Emma. She's was still very congested yesterday, and fussy and emotional again but still ate well and played. I'm looking forward to her getting over this (it's difficult knowing she is suffering) - and hoping I'm not next. Hubby has symptoms this morning.

Anonymous said...

Solar, I know you must be very busy, but wish you'd stop by and say hi to us. It's been a long time now, and it would be good to hear how you're doing.

I know you never complain about the weather, but that's quite a cold winter you're having up your way. I hope it hasn't caused you too much unpleasantness. (... remember the argument we once had about whether 60 degrees was comfortable - perfect in your words, cold in mine. 75 is about as perfect as it gets in my world).

Coreen said...

This is a big snow....

can't see the birdbath, so the snow is as high as it...haven't opened the garage doors yet, pretty sure there is more than 16-19", worried that when I open the door it will fall into the garage...weather reports for the surrounding towns are all in double digits...
& yet watching the local news, there are some people driving around...Dunkin Donuts & CVS is open...

oh, & the snow is coming to an end now, its a wet snow, stuck to the windows & screens, so it will be heavy to clean up...

jan said...

i am thinking of you this morning Coreen. Hope your snow is at an end now.

jan said...

Chloe, eating well and playing are good signs. Hope she is over this soon.

21" snow outside the garage doors....this is the most since the house was built in 1998...

I have no idea where Donald will be able to put
the snow when he plows it...there are already 5' high mounds from the last 2 storms...

Had to feed the birds right next to the house
since the place I had cleared has 21" of new snow again....

Carol said...

It was 49 degrees in the kitchen this morning. Will be colder here tonight. Will use a space heater in there tonight. Was toasty in the bedroom if you consider 59 toasty.

Carol said...

Coreen, heard that Hartford getting the worst of the storm. Hope you don't lose power.

Carol said...

Chloe, I wish you were watching the Dr. Phil show. I could have written this script.

Carol said...

TMZ reports that according to a press release from the show, I assume they are referring to the Dr. Phil show since they had just mentioned it, Ted has been drinking every day. He is suppose to go into rehab. That's a good idea. Can't take a drunk and alcohol addict off the streets, give him fame and money and expect his lifelong problems to disappear.

Carol said...

That was suppose to read drug and alcohol addict.

Carol said...

Two more nights of low 20s and then back to more normal winter temps, at least for a little while. I wouldn't be whining about the cold if I could get my kitchen more than 20 degrees warmer inside than outside, really.

Carol said...

I'm watching this memorial service for the victims in Tucson and wondering why the people there are behaving like it's a political rally. I'm not used to a memorial service where people are whooping and hollering. At first I was wondering if there were people there trying to disrupt the service and others were trying to drown them out??

I think it's weird but I told y'all I don't seem to march to the same drummer as everyone else does these days. I guess something's wrong with me.

Carol said...

Well, when I listened to the later Racheal Maddow show, before going to sleep, I heard her say that at first all the cheering at the Memorial service was unsettling to her. I'm glad to hear that at least one other person felt that way. I'm not totally screwy.

I thought the President did a good job with his speech and he even seemed a little startled by the clapping at first but then got into the rhythm of it. I liked how he spent a good bit of time talking about the littlest angel. She did represent the future of our country and thinking about our future these days is a little scary, maybe more than a little.

Carol said...

Coreen, I hope you are still up and running. Y'all did break some records.

Anonymous said...

Carol, I didn't see it, but mqw over at Tm agrees with you, as I'm sure many other people do:

"But what was with the standing ovations whistling - hollering from the crowd?
I guess it was the college kids in the arena there.

It was supposed to be a memorial service not a campaign stop"

Ha! I just checked back at TM and see I angered someone already with my comment. I knew I could piss someone off. All I have to do over there is open my mouth and give my opinion, and then wait for the explosion.

I can always count on fireworks there, and not just on New Years or Fourth of July.

jan said...

Long day at work yesterday so I checked in here last night but didn't write anything. Just too tired so took John out to supper at our fav NM cafe. I needed something predictable and they never dissapoint me. wish I could take all of you there. Their sopapillas are to die for.

I didn't watch the president's speech. Sorry to hear that the students were rude in their hollerin and whoopin. I guess that is why I am dreading working with students. Lately they seem so much more self-centered and inconsiderate than I remember from years ago when I began teaching.

jan said...

I see Sarah Palin is back in the news. She has "foot in mouth" disease again. She is pissing off the Jews now with some statement she made about "blood libel" I am tickled she is doing that. It is just one more group of people that will not vote for her. I also read that repubs were hoping she would attract women as voters but only about 20% of women like her. The rest think she is creepy.

jan said...

Chloe, I don't know if you are like me. I love seeing family but it is such a lot of work when they come to stay with you. I feel I have to do a total cleaning of the house. John and I are so set in our ways now that it is hard when they are with us all the time. I love seeing them, but love it more when they go home.

jan said...

Chloe, I have gone in and read TM a few times but they are way to critical over there for my taste.

jan said...

Carol, I think Idol starts next week. Just in time. Did you see Modern Family last night? so funny. I have been watching a "Raising Hope" too. It is pretty silly, but some good laughs. I really like the character of the young dad and his baby, Hope is a little doll. I stopped watching The Middle. It just didn't catch on with me.

Carol said...

Jan, I watched both of those comedies last night and had a good laugh. I almost hurt myself watching Modern Family. I like it the most but I do like The Middle also.

Carol said...

I heard where several were also complaining about the crowd reaction at the memorial service last night. Whew, so I'm not that abnormal afterall. If it were just about the recovery of Rep. Giffords and the actions of the heros I could understand the cheering, but there were many wonderful people who died in that tragedy and I just think they deserved a more respectful atmosphere.

I could tell when the President first started talking, he was surprised by the reaction. He even stuttered a little. He finally just had to go with the flow and change the pace of his presentation.

Carol said...

I think Sarah P might be finished but I don't think she ever really had what it takes to go far in the President business anyway, at least I hope not. She's OK for the reality TV business. Hey if Snookie and those other peeps can have successful shows, pretty much anyone can. One just has to be in the right place at the right time.

I don't necessarily think that Sarah had anything to do with those people being shot and killed in Tucson but we can't really say that she didn't either.

If I had put those cross hairs over anyone and it was aired on TV, and they ended up being shot, I'd be really concerned about it. I think Sarah did it to cater to the gun industry.

I don't really get why so many politicians feel such a strong need to cater to the gun industry. This terrible tragedy, instead of being a deterant, has increased gun sales. Since it happened there has been a 60% increase in gun sales in Arizona. Heard that on TV this morning. And people are grabbing up those large capacity ammo clips just in case they get outlawed.

Why does it seem that it is more the fanatical right that is so obsessed with guns, lots of guns?

Carol said...

Coreen, Coreen, do we need to go dig you out?

Chloe, hope you have lots of fun with your company. Has it been a while since you have seen your husband's sisters? Hope the weather warms up so y'all can do some outside stuff.

We are managing, but....

If you want to get a look at what it looks like here, scroll half down this site for
some pics that illustrate just what we have...
they are in Westport, the town next to mine...

My driveway was plowed last night, but it was
a nightmare for my snowplower, his truck got stuck just off the side of the driveway as he was coming in, he was well into the driveway & couldn't get the truck out,he had to call 2 friends, one with a snow plow & the other with a tow truck, the snow plow plowed into the driveway so they could back the tow truck in, then with a cable on the truck, pulled it out of the snow bank...Don had the tow truck stay outside the driveway while he finished plowing the driveway, & good thing, because he got stuck two more times & the tow truck had to pull him back from the deep snow...but he cleaned the driveway...it is now very narrow, very high mounds of snow on each side of driveway...

there are giant mounds of snow in the yard,
along the driveway on the street & in order to
get out of any street you have to inch out, since the snow is piled so high at all the intersections...side roads are snow packed down, main roads pretty clear, but all are now narrow from the huge amount of snow...& this snow is not going away anytime soon...no pleasure being out there...

& they are saying another possibility again next week...

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Years. I loved being in Chicago with my little Lauren at Christmas. It snowed every day I was there except one. I loved it. Chloe, the key to staying warm is to layer up. I wore my insulated underwear under my clothes every day and that along with my down coat and scarf kept me toasty. The temps were in the 20's during the day and teens at night. For some reason I don't hurt at all in extremely cold temps.

Jan, Which cruise did you take? I know it was with NCL but where did you go? Did you find the 2 main dining rooms that are free to eat at. The food in those is usually more gourmet but still healthy. I definitely want to go on another cruise with NCL. I need to go soon because I always said I wanted to lose weight and go on one and since I only weighed 101 lbs. the last time I got on a scale, now's the time. I'm also now an air sign, not a water sign. Do I have to move? Jan, you're now a water sign, the fish. That works for you.

Meet Ophiuchus, new zodiac sign

I guess I'm going to have to get to know myself all over again. But I did feel a change had occurred. Couldn't really put my finger on why.

Carol said...

Oh, the Right liked Obama's speech last night.

Carol said...

Coreen, I saw this pic of what someone thought was a chupacabra the other day on some website. Couldn't remember if it was C2C or Huff Post. I figured it was probably C2C but I was wrong, it was on Huff Post. It was a dead creature found in Kentucky. It turned out to be a dead hairless racoon.

Coreen said...

The description of the Ophiuchus was he's a serpent bearer...& a nude one at that...better
a chupacabra...

As far as Pres. speech...if both sides find it
good, is that so bad...I know it goes against
the left/right pushme/pullya game...but maybe it was just the right speech for the circumstances...it touched a tone for most...

however, the college types that treated it as a pep rally...that's another story...

Carol said...

I wasn't complaining about everyone liking Obama's speech. Even Beck complimented it. It's actually nice. So we have one evening of all getting along. That's a start.

I'd kinda like for the left media to drop this bitching about Sarah P thing. They've made their point and more bitching is just gonna give her sympathy. Move along people. Nothing more to see.

Coreen, maybe all the cheering was because those young people were loaded (pot, not guns), in a stadium and forgot why they were there.

Coreen said...

Didn't take it as complaining Carol...

I would hazard a guess that the short term
calm will be over before we even know it...

As for Sarah Palin, I agree they should just
leave it alone...more than likely in the end
she will not be running for President (the ruling class Repubs don't like her either)& will be a footnote in history...

Rats, I always liked being an Aries. Fortunately, did not have it tatooed on my ass LOL. Got a laugh out of that Carol.

Mary, We stopped in Costa Maya, Belize, Honduras (Roatan) and Cozumel. We did not eat in any of the restaurants. We liked the variety of the buffet. I actually did not gain any weight on the trip. I stayed with fruits and vegs - very little meat and much less desserts than before.

So glad you had a good visit with little Lauren in Chicago. Would love to see some new pics of her.

Jan, Mary and I were discussing this new horoscope news last night. We decided we don't have to change our horoscope sign because it was the sign we were born under before the earth shifted. The new signs should only refer to those born after the change.

Carol said...

I finally figured out what our problem is, we all need something to bitch about. With 24/7/365 cable news, if there wasn’t something to bitch about, what would they talk about. It’s a way to keep the conversation going even if it is destructive. And anger is energizing. Happiness and peace is certainly healthier but it doesn't stimulate any adrenalin flow. I think that talk radio may have started all this angry stuff. That’s where I first remember hearing a lot of angry talk. I bet that’s not always easy on those guys. Why do you think Rush had to take drugs? All that anger had to do a number on him.

This ponder came to me while watching Jon Stewart this morning. He was bitching about our bitching about the reaction of the crowd at the memorial service. Pretty much everyone agreed that the President did a good job with his speech at the service, so we found something else to bitch about.

And the comedians need some to joke about. They have no good material if everyone is getting along.

Anonymous said...

"... anger is energizing"

I've always personally found that to be true Carol. Like I've said here before, it's all 'show business'.

Does bring to mind also a quote Sturge at TM posted the other day:

"A nation at peace will make war with itself".

--FWN

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Sturges quotes, there was another one I made note of the other day:

"Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.
--Mark Twain

Are we all living in our own little world in an illusion of our making? There may be more truth there than meets the eye. I've certainly noticed that we all see thing a little (or a lot) different from each other. Do our illusions depend on our differing motivations.

So many questions, so little time.

"I love seeing them, but love it more when they go home. "

Ha Jan! I'm the same way. We're set in our ways too, and it's always nice to have company (we didn't have much notice though), but it's often a relief when they leave. Hate to say that, but ...... For one thing, I'll have to cook a lot more often, and there will be complete change of routine. We're looking forward to seeing them though, as it's been a couple of years (except by phone) and we'll have a lot of catching up to do. They also have friends down south of Houston, but I'm not sure how long they'll be visiting them, so am preparing for the 2 week duration.

Emma still isn't back in pre-school - it turns out I was a little too optimistic on Monday when she looked better after that nap. She's been just as congested all week, but I'm still hoping she's better today (although I know it'll be a while for her to get back to normal, and I'm keeping her stress level very low).

Add to that - hubby came down with it Wednesday, and this morning I woke up with a mild gravely sore throat. I'm hoping that I'm fight it off and don't get it . Typical January. Like I said before, Jan. and Feb. are not my favorite months. Thank goodness they're followed by March, which I always happily welcome. It doesn't get any better imo) than the onset of spring.

Carol, My Yahoo home page still has me as a pisces, so I've made the same decision as you and Mary. I'm sticking with my original sign.

Mary, like Jan, I'd love to see your pictures too and hear more about your visit and little Lauren.

... oh and Mary, I do layer up in the cold, but it still doesn't keep me from complaining. When I moving around working or stressed out, I get warm. When I'm sitting still (like on this computer) I'm cold. I think it has a lot to do with becoming acclimated. I've never lived in a really cold climate, and we adjust to certain temperatures. . Our cold days are few enough, that when we live in warmer climates, we don't have the same clothing as people who live in the snow I see people here who have moved from up north going into a store wearing a short sleeve t-shirt and flip flops on a day I consider freezing. I guess it's whatever we become accustomed to (and prefer).

I forgot to update you guys yesterday on Dr. Phil's Ted, the homeless guy, intervention. Dr Phil had set up an appointment with Ted to have some long overdue dental work done. Ted backed out on that. He had several appointments to come back to Dr. Phil and he stood him up with that. They did finally get together and Dr. Phil offered him rehab in some really nice center on Padre Island in Texas, a holistic center for rehab, all expenses paid and no cameras.

Dr. Phil even had the director there to take him directly to the center but Ted said no, he needed to go home to take care of some business. Dr. Phil did finally get him to agree to go to rehab after going home for a couple of days. Dr Phil is going to send that director home with him to wait and take him in a couple of days. Hmmmm. What's your bet on that happening? Sometimes you just can't change people's destiny. I've certainly learned that.

And Ted wasn't really out there really looking to change his destiny, he was just looking for a little change.

I see at least a couple of homeless people a week at work. I listen to their stories about how they live. When the weather is cold, like it is now, I tell them that it's good that they are in jail where they have three squares a day, and a warm place to sleep. They don't agree. They'd rather go back to their home under the bridge. Go figure!

You know how I feel about trying to change someone. It ain't gonna happen.

My throat is so sore. Now I realize Emma must have had that going with all the rest - and she's still congested somewhat. Definitely not back to normal yet.

So, since we're all sick now, we'll stay home tomorrow, order pizza and make it as festive as we can for Emma, with immediate family only. We had to cancel the birthday get together that her mom had planned. Of course, that may be where this whole illness thing started - her mom was with us on Saturday, and Sun. Em was showing symptoms. I found out yesterday, that her mother had been sick for several days too.

That goes along with that past behavior I was talking about. Every time Emma's been sick (which is only about 4 times) it's always come from her mother. I have reason that this one (number 4) came from her too.

I hope you'll post a picture of her. Is she growing much yet? Lauren may have already passed her up. She weighed 19 lbs. at her last visit at 6 mos. I've got some cute pictures and as soon as I figure out how to I'll put up a link.
I hope Emma has a miraculous recovery for her birthday and has alot of fun!!

Carol said...

Happy Birthday little Emma. I also hope you all are feeling better.

Chloe, when are your guests due to arrive?

Anonymous said...

Carol and Mary, Thank you so much for the birthday wishs for Emma.

Mary, She's only a little over 23 lbs, but she is starting to be able to wear some things for 24 months (mostly pajamas) - but most of her wardrobe is still 18 months. We're getting close though. The thing is she 'loves' fruits and vegetables. Her mother was the same way. She's actually a good eater now, but has never been a really big eater. I always make sure I have all her favorites on hand.

She doesn't know about those candy bars at the check stand yet - she hasn't made the connection. I don't give her candy yet, but she gets cookies, cake and ice cream occasionally, and loves those little marsh mellows that are all different colors, but I mostly just give her a few to reward her or bribe her (and not every day). Ha - you have to think of things to get them to cooperate.

So little Lauren was 19 lbs at her 6 month check - Emma's doctor would have loved to see that. There's a waitress at Chile's that comes over and talks about her baby who is the same age as Emma, whenever we're in there with Emma, and she said her baby was 25 lbs at 6 months. I think the last time we were in there she was 30 something. Emma has never looked thin, but she is petite (so far).

Mary, You can go to Photo Bucket and open an account. It explains to you exactly what to do. You'll have to scan the pictures onto your computer first (if you haven't yet). Then you can link them by highlighting and copying the http address bar at the top of your page, and pasting it onto this site.

Carol, I always bring home a couple of enchilada's from the Mexican Restaurant, because I stuff myself on chips and salsa. I sometimes think those chips are the main thing that draw me in there. Those, and the rice and beans. I eat the cheese enchilada's, but could probably get along without them, and never notice.

Hubby's sisters are coming in a little before two at Bush (yuk) International, which is closest to us. It used to be call Houston International, an is a very convenient, nice airport to use. The one south of Houston (Hobby) is a horrible airport to go to. Much more traffic and congestion down there.

I stay away from downtown at all costs.

Happy 2nd birthday Emma.

Chloe, our little Abigail is petite like Emma. She weighs about 16 lbs and is 1 year old. She is just fine too. On the other hand, Landon, Abigail's 1st cousin weighted 24 lbs on his 1st birthday. Like your little Em, Abigail loves fruits and vegs too.

I think you are wise to just have a small party for Emma at this age. She is an age where she probably will enjoy a smaller gathering as much or more.

I too fill up on chips and salsa so that when my dinner arrives, I an almost full. So then I take the rest of dinner home and enjoy it another day.

We had a scare last night. My son in Ark called about 8 pm and said he had been having indigestion most of the day and was feeling a lot of pressure (no pain) in his chest. I told him he needed to go to ER and get it checked out. He is greatly overweight and has a fam history of heart disease on both sides. I was really scared. He did go to ER and they ran all the usual tests. Heart checked out ok - including cholesterol and Blood pressure - although he said it was high when he first checked in. They think it was gall bladder. He got home about 1 am. I sure hope he takes this seriously and gets some help to lose weight.

Jan, I' m looking forward to seeing those pictures you took at Abigail's birthday. Hope you'll post them soon.

I feel so spaced with this cold or whatever it is today. Emma had a good time, and loved the little play kitchen we got her. It's so cute, and has handles that click as they turn, a sink and stove, and a little washing machine door on the side. I'm going to take a picture of her in front of it when she feels better (me too). It was a bear to put together though, and took hubby a good part of the morning. But she had her other presents to play with in the mean time.

Carol, It's good to hear about warmer weather coming back, but it looks like up here we won't get near 70 for a couple of more weeks.

I'm beat. Emma's taking a nap, and I'm thinking about doing the same thing.

Carol said...

So little Em got a kitchen. Smart move Chloe. Planning ahead. Is she feeling better? New toys can be a pick me up. Did your company get in? And do you have any siblings. I can't remember if you ever said.

I caught a couple of short naps today myself. It was warmer, got up to about 59 but I still have a chill.

Coreen, I saw your temp this morning, in the low single digits. I don't think that temp would invite me outside for long.

Carol, Hubby's sisters are coming in Monday. Emma is better, but still not symptom free. She has a little bit of cause and still a runny nose. I think we're getting to the end now (but that's what I thought Monday too). I under estimated whatever this is going around, and have heard a lot of people have the same thing.

I have a brother is Southern California, but we don't get together or even talk often. We left everyone out west.

The reason we got her that little kitchen is because she loves opening and closing (slamming!) cabinet doors and turning knobs, plus likes to have little shelves and openings to stuff things into. She really likes it, because it's just her size. She mostly likes electronics, but we've pretty much gotten her everything within her age range and beyond that I can find. She really prefers to play with real touch ipods, cell phones and our wireless house phones. You can imagine the problems that causes, and she keeps getting taller and reaching more things. She's now a very clingy 2 year old, that often doesn't want me to leave the room if someone else besides gampa or me are here - and that includes even her mother (she just hasn't been around enough). So this is another stage we'll have to carefully work our way through. They all pass.

.... which brings to mind my favorite again: 'This too shall pass'.

Sometimes that's all that gets me through all the stressful situations that bombard our lives here on earth.

Good morning all. It is a beautiful Sunday morning here in NM. One of the things I love about living here are the beautiful sunny mornings most of the year. It is great to have a day without any work or social expectations (that I am aware of) - maybe it is all awareness or perception.

I am sitting here having a cup of tea thinking of each of you and wondering what you are doing this morning.

Carol said...

Thanks for citing that article Jan. It was interesting. Here's my lazy link in case someone else wants to read it. I googled the title you gave us. Just love that Google.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/16/us/16loughner.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

I have often pondered just what happens to people who snap. When I worked with that old Doc, one of his jobs was to provide the medical care for a nursing home in town that specialized in caring for those who were mentally ill. While I was working for him, he dumped that job on me also. Evidently there weren't many of that type of NH around the country since we had people in there from Alaska and Hawaii.

The NH cared for patients who couldn't be housed in the usual nursing home setting because they were too disruptive and we had over 200 there and it wasn't really chaotic. I called it my home full of beautiful minds. Many of the people there were intelligent and had been functioning members of society at one time. Most of the time the history of present illness in the chart did not give me any insight into when or why their mind snap occurred.

Most were intelligent people. Even many of the inmates I have with psychosis are. They don't look intelligent but after talking with them awhile, I find that they often are.

Carol said...

Flatus said this to Bethy: ".... we are what we are--the sum of our parts. When you aren't here, we always sense your absence and worry for you."

... also, KGC spoke of a very nice though: "I believe people's good thoughts can be part of any healing process distant and for strangers and there is evidence that supports the notion."

I think there is more to these blogs than meets the eye. They're not to be underrated.

jan said...

Candy Crowley just had an amazing discussion on TV with an older man who has lived with schizophrenia and a father of a son who is in treatment for schizophrenia. I hope more people listen to this discussion. The major points from this discussion were that: There are services for the mentally ill but they are difficult to access even when a person wants help. Both guests said that when a person is deep into his mental illness he/she does not want or feel they need help. The father of the son with Schizophrenia said he has a partnership with his son - he listens to him and does not try to tell him what to do but when his son has a psychotic episode, he steps in and gets him the help he needs without his consent. This is a difficult illness for families. It is lifelong with no cure, but is definitely treatable. As long as the person takes their meds, they can live a "normal" life. Both men also agreed the stigma on mental illness is a huge problem that keeps those with mental illness and their families from seeking help.

Love to each of you.

Carol said...

Chloe, what KGC wrote.."I believe people's good thoughts can be part of any healing process distant and for strangers and there is evidence that supports the notion."

caught my eye also. I agree and people's bad thought can have the opposite effect. We have a lot of bad thoughts going on in this country right now and even our planet is responding negatively.

That's one of the dangerous things about those radical right wing radio show hosts. They just spew bad thoughts all day and distressed angry people suck them up. Even when their side is running the show, they keep on bitching.

And I always read what Bethy writes when I see her name on it. It's always interesting.

I guess we all feel like what we have to say is not important. Never really stopped me though.

If the stars are aligned perfectly, just maybe

Had a funny conversation with my nephew, Mike, and his wife, Nele, who are visiting here this weekend. They are staying with my oldest son, Bill and his wife, Kathy. ''They are all big football fans of Univ of OK. (OU). Well Mike and his wife are always saying bad things about UT - Austin (on Facebook) which is my alma mater. I have not responded b/c it has been so long since I had seen Mike and Nele and did not want to have a family battle - LOL. But last night I told them they need to lay off UT. We all had a big laugh.

So we all have our fav teams. I don't actually have a fav pro team. So I will adopt the Saints and Jets.

jan said...

Chloe, interesting that we both have family visiting from a long way off and who we have not seen in long time. Have fun.

My time with my nephew has been a healing time. He and I parted last time on not great terms.

Carol said...

Now is the time to get nervous.

Carol said...

Maybe not.

Carol said...

Feeling better Coreen?

Coreen said...

My oh my...the miracles continue...

I am very happy for the Jets...

Carol said...

Congrats Coreen. I hope they cream the Steelers. Don't like their QB. Won't try to spell his name.

Coreen said...

Thanks Carol....

The Steelers will be tough too...but this team
has been dismissed by just about every sports
guy...so we will have to see what happens...

This was the first year the Jets beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh during the regular seasonever...so we will see how it goes...it will not be easy...but...

J-E-T-S...Jets! Jets! Jets!...

That's got to be a little tricky.

Love the lead in the NY Post for the Jets win...

Bye Bye Brady

jan said...

Carol, we watched the last of the miss America pageant last night and saw Miss Ark. She was quite impressive. There was nothing else on TV.

jan said...

Watching the Golden Globes. The young man who plays "Sheldon" on the 30 min show, the Big Bang Theory won an award. If you have not seen this show, check it out sometime. It is hilarious. It is about 4 young guys. Sheldon plays the part of a young eccentric physicist who is a classic nerd. Jane Lynch won an award for her role in Glee, another of my new favorites. It was a slow summer season and I don't like to watch reruns.

jan said...

Congratulations Coreen on your JETS winning the game. See, I do keep track of some games.

Carol said...

Jan, I have seen the Big Bang. It's goofy but OK in a pinch. I've not seen Glee.

I want to see that movie The Kids are All Right but just checked Redbox and they don't have it. It was released in Nov so maybe it's too late or they may have never had it. Redbox is limited. If I watched more movies I'd join that Netflix.

Carol said...

I'm happy to see Parks and Recreation with Amy Poehler is coming back. I really liked that show.

Carol said...

The guy who hosted the awards tonight was a little rough with his comedy, don't ya think?

Carol said...

I'm up way too early because of an AH at the jail who refuses to do anything I try to do to help him, he refuses to sign a refusal to do it, it results in problems that I get called for too early on my day off. He does this on purpose and thinks it funny. He's in for child molestation. He's mad and takes it out on the only department there to take care of him.

I'm watching Way Too Early with Willy Geist. He's talking about everything we mentioned last night. One was about those comments from Ricky Gervais, the host of the Golden Globes. He really gigged many of the stars last night with his really mean comments. I can't see anyone being cool with what he said. I don't think he will be invited back.

Carol said...

Interesting poll on healthcare reform. 43% of those polled, the highest percent, wants the healthcare bill changed yes, they want it to do more, like we do. Only 26% want it totally repealed.

Carol said...

Here is a Youtube of the opening comments from Gervais if you didn't see the awards show last night. There were more, even worse, later.

Golden Globes 2011 - Ricky Gervais Opening Monologue

Wow, you were up early!

I'm peeking in while we're waiting at the airport (brought along my lap top, of course).

Carol, you should consider Netflix. They have movies and TV episodes in unlimited amounts per month. We have unlimited downloads to our blue ray player which was preset for Netflix when we bought it, and the service is only 7.99 month. We're going to down grade our Directv, because it's so expensive - right now we have pretty much all the movie channels, but this is better.

I'm linking a page that says you can download movies (etc.) onto your computer (which you can then hook up to your TV if you want to, and get unlimited DVDs by mail for another $2 (although they limit the amount you can have at the same time). I know many people prefer the mail, and it's very fast. You send it back in the same envelope for free. http://www.netflix.com/

Well, this is probably the most you'll be hearing from me for a while, depending on what our schedule ends up looking like.

jan said...

Carol, thanks for posting the Ricky Gervais monologue. I missed it last night.

jan said...

I loved the movie, The Kids....all right. Good movie.

jan said...

I saw Black Swan at the theatre. It is a strange movie. I am glad I saw it though.

Carol said...

Try to pop in if you can Chloe. We'll miss you. It's not like you have to read thru 200 posts anymore.

Chloe, I don't think I have what I need to download the movies. For Internet, I use that little thingy I stick into a USB port on my laptop. Also I'm not sure I could find enough movies that I want to see but the price is right.

Jan, the opening remarks only covered a few of the host's insults. He had plenty more. I cringed hearing them.

I'm enjoying that Focaccia bread I made yesterday. I only made half the recipe and it made two small round loaves. I slice it up and dip it in this sauce I ate once at the French restaurant I went to in town. They had different kinds of sliced up breads and had this sauce made of extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinager and herbs. It's pretty tasty.

Carol said...

Jan, I was teetering on whether I wanted to see that Black Swan. I'll wait for it to come out on DVD. I do want to see the other one.

American Idol starts this week and it moved to Wednesday and Thursday. I'm not as big an Idol fan as you are. I don't think they will have a mean judge this year. I wonder if people will like that or not.

Carol said...

Coreen, if you didn't see it, Renee offered you congrats on your Jets win on TM today. From what you said about the New England area not liking your New York teams, it must have been hard for her to do that. Think she's a Patriots fan? Probably so.

Coreen said...

I did see that Carol, & yes Renee is an avid
Boston sports fan...

The longstanding rivalry between New York sports fans & Boston fans is fierce, I think because the respective teams are in the same division of whatever sport it is...baseball yankees/red sox, football jets/pats, basketball knicks/celts...so it is always a big deal for the fans...there is really no love
lost between the two...

curiously Connecticut is a split personality when it comes to pro sports...where I live the New York teams rule, but from New Haven & north to the Mass border, there are as many Boston fans as New York fans...

Carol, good idea to rent Black Swan. We went to see The King's Speech this afternoon. It was a really good movie. I liked it much better than Black Swan. Based on a true story too.

jan said...

Was nice to have an extra day today.

Carol said...

Jan, reading about the King's Speech didn't turn me on much but since you liked it and it got 96% and rave reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes site I'll put it on my rent it list when it comes out.

I'm trying to watch this new show, Harry's Law. It's not very realistic but I like Kathy Bates so I'll try to get past that. There's not much on television these days, IMO, that is very realistic, least of all, the reality shows. That's the biggest problem I have with watching most of what's on TV. My brain wants things to make sense. If it's comedy I can handle things not making sense but if it's drama, I want it to make sense.

But then...does life really make sense?

Carol said...

Just read this poll on what people thought of Gervais's performance at the Golden Globes. 66% responded that he hit it out of the park.

Fox Shoots Hunter

jan said...

Carol, I have never been to a movie where people clapped at the end and this happened with The King's Speech. It was a well made movie and I thought it moved very fast.

jan said...

Carol, l loved the article about the fox and hunter. How funny!

jan said...

Fox 1, Hunter 0. LOL

jan said...

We watched Harry's law last night too. We also like Kathy Bates.

jan said...

I am looking forward to hearing your impressions of the Black Swan. Call me when you see it.

Carol said...

What did you think of Harry's Law Jan? The part that was hard to swallow was when the lawyers went after each other in court. And when Kathy Bates went on and on about what a waste it is to throw these small time drug abusers in prison. That was at the beginning of the trial and not in her closing augument. I totally agreed with everything she said but no Judge I've ever known would tolerate that kind of display in court.

One incident that showed me just how pissy judges can be in court was when some of our relatives sued us over some land we co-owned. They had screwed us for years but after my Uncle died, Aunt Dottie's brother, (remember her) we said enough is enough.

Those relatives had the only corporate attorneys in town so I did some research and hired a firm out of New Orleans. Big names but since we didn't have much dough they gave us this jr partner, brand new, who just started practicing law. Our's was his first case in court. He was a history teacher who had gone back for a law degree. A very interesting guy. He has since written a series of at least six mystery novels set in New Orleans and other books.

"New Orleans-based attorney and writer Tony Dunbar is the Lillian Smith Book Award-winning author of books about Mississippi, Appalachia, migrant workers, and the Southern labor movement as well as the acclaimed Tubby Dubonnet mystery series."

http://www.newsouthbooks.com/bkpgs/detailauthor.php?author_id=393

Our case was heard in this small town in this rural parish north of here. Presiding over the court was this heavy set grouchy judge. I did most of the work for Tony and he just had to play the attorney. He was a neat guy but pretty green.

He and I got quite a lesson during that trial about what is OK and what is not in court even though I'm sure it does very from judge to judge. Once Tony approached one of the witness, one of my relatives, to ask questions and the judge chewed him a new one, yelling that this wasn't like on TV. I almost crawled under my chair. I never forgot that experience.

This is why you should never text while walking in the mall:

Don't text while walking

Carol said...

If I could text and walk at the same time, that would probably happen to me.

Carol said...

Jan, I wondering if you got to meet your new clinical students yet. How many are in a typical clinical group and what is your clincal setting?

Carol said...

Coreen, I take it you didn't watch Harry's Law since it comes on when your Hawaii guys are on. I'd like to hear your take on the show. Do you have a tivo?

Carol said...

And Chloe, hope your having fun with your guests.

jan said...

I cannot walk and text.

Carol, what happened with your case?

I was in class with my group of students today. I will meet with them tomorrow. They look like pretty nice people. I am pretty ok with it now. This is going to be a 30 hr week. I will get my comp time back later in the semester.

jan said...

I have 8 in my group. Our NM State Board of Nursing requires that undergrad nurs programs no have more than 8 in a clinical group. In Texas I had 12 in a clinical group in an inpatient clinical setting. It was Hell. I was scared to death half the time. I bet I lost some months or years off my life from 3 years of pure stress there. I should have left the first year. That was just plain dangerous.

jan said...

I take students with me on health screenings and to our Child Dev. Centers (child care for kids from 6 wks-3 yrs). I will also take them on some home visits. Their responsibilities will be to do needs assessments on the families they see and develop a nursing diagnosis from that and interventions, teaching plan and evaluation. They also have to do a teaching project in one of the settings. Most choose to do it in a special school for pregnant and parenting teens. I will have the group for a total of 6 weeks. Not much time to do very much. This is their 2nd semester in nursing courses.

hmm, poor lady who fell into the fountain. I fell into my the open door of my dishwasher one time and I was not texting or drinking anything alcoholic. Now my DW door is sprung a little but the DW still works just fine. At least I didn't have an audience.
