Leaving Phoenix

Time for a new post. These are some pictures taken loop 101 and highway 17 as we left Phoenix on Sunday, Nov. 28. It was a cloudy morning - almost looked like it could rain or snow, but that does not happen often in Phoenix. I was impressed with the roadside landscaping and art work on the walls along these highways so I took some pics in anticipation of this new post. I love the Saguaro cactus along the roads also in Phoenix and on the outskirts of the city. the Saguaro begin about 40-50 miles to the East of Phoenix. I don't know when they begin or end to the west of Phoenix. This is the only place I have seen the Saguaro. They are amazing. They are protected in Arizona and are not allowed to be cut down or moved.

Got a couple of motorcyclists too.

Everywhere in Phoenix you can see mountains and hills. There is one that is shaped like a camel lying down - appropriately named - Camelback mountain. I don't have a pic of it. Wish I did.

oops - got a double link there on that first one.

You all have probably already seen this, but it sure does disappoint us who were hoping to see Hillary as president someday.

Hillary Clinton: Secretary of State is "My Last Public Position"

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has once more reiterated that she will not run for president in 2012, going so far as to refer to her current role in government as "my last public position."

At a town hall meeting appearance in Manama, Bahrain on Friday, Clinton denied intentions to run for either president or vice president on the ticket with President Obama, who defeated her in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary. Some experts have also speculated that she could replace Robert Gates next year when he retires as secretary of defense.

"I think I will serve as secretary of state as my last public position," she said. Clinton's career has included not only her current position as secretary of state, but also eight years in the Senate representing New York.

Clinton has repeatedly laughed off rumors that she may seek the highest office in the country, and she was notably out of the country during the midterm elections when Democrats lost control of the House.

When her current position is over, Clinton "would like to continue working to improve lives for others," she said, adding that she will "probably go back to advocacy work, particularly on women and children and probably around the world." This marks the first time Clinton has publicly discussed alternatives to political office in her future.

In returning to advocacy work, she could follow in the footsteps of her husband and former President Bill Clinton, who has largely turned to humanitarian work through his Clinton Foundation since leaving the White House.

Mrs. Clinton has formerly worked extensively for the rights of women and children. She went on to note that while she has had a "fascinating and rewarding public career," she particularly enjoyed her time as a lawyer for the Children's Defense Fund, which advocates for abused and neglected children, as well as her women's rights work, according to Reuters.

"I feel very lucky because of my parents and then my education, the opportunities that I've had, so I would like to continue working to improve lives for others," she added.

In addition to personal passions, Clinton also noted the strain of the job of president as a deterrent towards seeking further election.

"Every president, if you watch what they look like when they come into office, you can see their hair turn white because it's such a hard job," she said." http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20024551-503544.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody

I'll check back in late tomorrow, to see if anyone's around. Going to fight the crowds and finish up some Christmas shopping in the morning.

Hope everyone is well.

Carol, I just felt I had to come back and tell you that I am worried about you feeling so overwhelmed with all that's going on in your life right now. I hope we can discuss it more here at the Swamp, if you feel up to it. I think we can help each other work our way through some of these feeling's (frustrations, etc.), that I think we all go through, but still feel very alone when they're happening to us.

Like you said, we have to keep talking - even if it's complaining - in order to understand ourselves better. Most of our problems are not insurmountable, but often feel like they are.

Remember, it's all perception.

Carol said...

Jan, love the pics. Is that second pic a real cactus or a statue?

Chloe, glad you dropped in. This place is not the same without you. That goes for you also, Solar.

I do realize that my biggest problem is my state of mind and I'm really working hard to change that.

I think Hillary has it right. I can't see how anyone wants any part of politics these days.

Carol said...

The other day Craig said on TM that there were not two parties any more, just one, the party of money. He was so right.

Yesterday when the Republicans and some Dems voted against a tax break for those who make less than a million dollars, it was pretty obvious. I could see that some familes who make over 250 thou might not be really rich but over a million??? That said it all. Most of our politicians belong to the very rich and they want their tax break. So are many in the media. They want their's also.

Carol said...

We need to all offer a prayer or meditation for little Lauren, Mary's GB. She has some kind of respiratory infection and is ICU and may be on a ventilator.

jan said...

Chloe, the 2nd picture is some kind of artwork on the wall. It is not real cactus. I have more pics of artwork on the wall that I did not post.

I love the pics of Calif on the links. We are so fortunate in this country to have the beautiful scenery - so diverse in the different regions/states etc. and so many cities have made the roadsides more beautiful with man/woman-made art also and landscaping.

jan said...

Carol, John and I will say prayers for little Lauren. Please keep us informed of how she is doing here.

jan said...

Good for Hillary. When she was in Ark. she was greatly involved in issues related to children and women. That is what I have admired most about her.

Anonymous said...

Carol, Is Lauren doing any better? And is it as serious as it sounds? I really hated hearing that she's sick, and can imagine what she, her parents and Mary are going through.

Little Lauren will be in my thoughts and prayers - I'm hoping to hear soon that they've got it under control (is she asthmatic?). And as Jan said, please keep us informed.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see that post by Craig, but as usual, he has it right. Most of our politicians are bought and paid for.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I enlarged the pic with the art work and really like it. I hope you'll post some more of the pics you took, when you get a chance. It's so nice that you take us along on your road trips.

To be honest, I have to admit that I have had to work extra hard to keep my self up lately too. It's always like this in the winter for me - I have my ups and downs. But I must say, having a toddler depending on me forces me to keep myself on an even keel, and always wear my happy face for her. I'm also a lot stronger, carrying her around so much (it's often easier than letting her walk around stores, etc. because she's into everything). Not complaining though, she's good for me.

I do have to spend a lot more time at McDonalds than I ever would have dreamed of before. As a matter of fact, I'd probably never go there, if she didn't like their play area (and the other little ones) there so much. I divide our time between a couple of different ones, but they still are getting to know us on a first name basis. Life has changed.

Carol said...

Last I heard from Mary is that the baby is still on a ventilator but her oxygen saturation is better. That's a good sign but still scary. I don't know how parents make it thru those really young years.

Chloe, Lauren's mom has asthma and her daddy had lots of allergies.

We're going to be in the tundra for most of the week. Well, for the deep south that is. Low 30s for the next 4 days. I have my longjohns on. Guess your weather is about the same Chloe.

Carol said...

Chloe, if you like them, McDonalds make a good mocha frappe. A little sweet but I like it.

Anonymous said...

Yep Carol, same weather here. It's not bad when the days are sunny and we get plenty of that day time solar heat. I find I sleep longer during these cold nights, and I use my electric blanket when I first get into bed, but turn it off before I go to sleep.

When I'm not moving around much during certain times of the day (like when I'm on this computer), even though I'm running the central heating, I keep a little space heating going at my feet. I 'really' don't like feeling cold - I know it's just a personal preference, but it's worse the older I get.

Anonymous said...

I'll try that mocha frappe. We don't actually eat our meals there, we just normally get a snack (like fries) and a large drink, and then spend up to an hour in the play area. She loves to run around freely and explore - it's almost impossible to take her to a regular restaurant any more, because she doesn't want to stay still (this too shall pass). They call them the terrible two's for a good reason. They've got a mind of their own, but there a lot of fun too.

Anonymous said...

.... oh, and we do like their little hot apple pies too. If she does get sweets, she eats such a small amount, that it doesn't affect her. She's still not a big eater, but she eats more constantly, like I do. I've been able to keep off that weight I lost, and feel so good with the weight I am right now. I'm never happy, if I'm not on the slim side, and it seems easier now than it ever has before. Maybe an age thing - because I love to eat.

Solar said...

Carol, not too much time anymore since I sometimes don't know when I will be working. Seems like im always trying to catch up on some sleep.

When something is overwhelming me....mentally, I always try to think of those things in a third party sense....looking at it from this point of view, most times gives me relief...it is all in the mind as you say and knowing how to deceive it a little will help...

Sure hope that little Pink Lauren soon gets all better.!!!

Chloe,

Apple pie, and me, "Solar heat" what can go wrong huh :))

Still having trouble with that little ol two year old? give her a Solar hug for me...later

ps, glad that i peeked in before leaving....and saw your solar heat comment.....I know that you knew that if I saw it....that I would would write a response...trickster you.....learned something from that two year old after all......

nother ps....Carol, deception....is the reason that we have bigger brains...we do this all of the time...almost all think that eating meat, or communication...well in part it is...but deceiving one another is the reason for brain ( pressure ) growth......later

jan said...

We stop at McDonalds on all our trips. I like the kids meal- I usually get the chiicken things, apple slices and choc milk. It is not necessarily the healthiest meal but I like it. I also like the apple pies. McDonalds is also our potty stops too.

jan said...

Carol & Chloe, You are having some cold weather for your part of the country. We had a week like that and now our daytime temps are in the 60's.

jan said...

Chloe, John bought a Kindle 3 weeks ago and it is not working now. He is going to try and get tech support for it tomorrow.

jan said...

John gets depressed when his technology is not working.

jan said...

I have made a decision. I am not going to cook a turkey next year for Thanksgiving. I will buy one already cooked. It is such a big job to cook and not worth the effort. I finally cleaned the roaster today. That is what is behind this decision.

jan said...

Solar, always enjoy hearing from you. I have always wondered where you picked up the name "solar."

jan said...

Good night all.

Carol said...

It's nice to wake up with something on the blog to read.

It's cold this morning. I have no problem keeping warm at night. I sleep in warm ups, under lots of covers and my AC/heater unit keeps the room warm enough while I'm under the covers. I turn it down to 60 when I go to bed but when it gets this cold outside it probably runs the same at 60 as it would if I turned it up to 70 or higher. It's working as hard as it can.

I usually wake up with Morning Joe. They are saying that there is not much difference between Obama and Bush. They are right. He pretty much has continued everything Bush started. So much for change. All we got is a new color model.

It's amazing how many of the ultra rich are screaming..."we don't need these tax cuts, we won't even noticed the loss".

I'm starting to read that Obama needs a primary challenger next go round. I was wondering if that could happen. And now Hillary says she doesn't want it. Who could be his primary challenger?

Carol said...

Oh Chloe, that's a cute pic of little Emma.
She's growing up fast.

And Jan, I get depressed when my technology doesn't work right also.

Anonymous said...

I can't imagine who would challenge him either Carol. At this point, I don't even try to make predictions. The last 'primary' broke my heart - I don't plan on getting as involved, ever again (knowing what I know now).

I agree, it's nice to wake up to the blog.

Jan, Sorry to hear that John is having trouble with his Kindle. If tech support can't find the problem, then they will replace it. Amazon is so great to deal with. I called them once (but I can't remember why - bcause I've never had a problem with mine in all these years I've used it), and I remember getting staight through.

I did get out of bed and step on the first one I had (which had fallen to the floor during the night) and ruined it. That's when I got my newest one, and I really do love it. Once John gets his going again, and uses it for a while, he's going to love it. It took me close to a year, before I became so attached that I am no longer interested in actual books. I read a lot in bed, and they're so much bulkier to deal with. It did take about a year though, before I really fell in love with the Kindle. At first, I was dubious. Now I don't know how I'd get along without it. Don't forget, you can both download those same books onto your laptop also (using his account). Also, once he pays for one, they keep it on file for re-downloading in the future - he owns it. So you could download any book he's reading onto your computer (for free, since it's already paid for), if you wanted to read it too.

I had to smile when I read that John gets depressed when his technology is not working.
Don't we all!!?

Anonymous said...

... oh, and Jan. I think you're smart to buy a ready cooked turkey next year - you can buy them pre-cooked at any market or elsewhere. We often have ham at Christmas, and buy a honeybaked pre-cooked, (pre spiral sliced) or even can buy them like that at the market (HEB or Kroger). Then we just heat it - no muss, no fuss. Add vegies and mashed potatoes (and whatever else sounds good - baked beans are always good with ham too) french bread or dinner roles, and bingo: an easy (delicious) meal.

Lots of dessert of course (pre-baked at store!). Ready to eat Edwards key lime pie, (and/ r Krogers bought apple or pecan) - maybe some Blue Bonnet rocky road ice cream, so everyone has a choice. Yum. And it all refreezes for later. I decided years ago, if it's lots of work, it's just not worth it.

Anonymous said...

Ha Solar! I did think of you when I wrote about how much I love solar heat i the winter. I knew that one wouldn't get by you (not much does).

Glad that you're busy and up - but sorry you're not getting enough sleep.

Love your idea about thinking about your problems from a third person point of view. We're to close to see the easiest way out, otherwise. De-personalize it!

When I read your idea, it reminded me of something I read last night, in a book I'm thinking of recommending to Carol. I'm not sure you'll like it or not Carol, but will mention it later. It has 'cosmic' in the title (that turns some people off) and it's dated, but I still get something from it, even though I originally read this guy about 30 years ago.

jan said...

Good morning all. I too enjoy waking up to "something on the blog."

Chloe, I read what you wrote to John. Thanks so much for that information. I love my computer but I still like books. I read a book in graduate school that talked about "early adopters" and later adopters" talking about new inventions. The authors last name is Rogers (my birth name).

Chloe and Carol, you are both definitely early adopters and so is John. I tend to be a late adopter. I have no idea what that says about our personalities. I think the reason I am a late adopter is that I am "tight" fisted with money in my later years. However, I have no problem spending money on fabric for quilts. John tends to be tight fisted with money when it comes to clothing, but not with his technology. LOL

jan said...

Chloe, all the foods you talked about are my favorites. I like cooking veggie, especially since I bought the elec pressure cooker. At least once a week I now cook a bunch of carrots and cabbage and we eat on those for 2-3 days. They are so good for you and the cooker makes them taste so good. I put a can of lo salt chic broth in when I cook them and that is it. I also will vary this with cooking some sweet potatoes too.

I don't like cooking meat. We buy rotisserie chickens at Costco and then some baked chicken at Smith/Kroger. We seldom eat beef. I need to get some good recipes for fish. We don't eat fish and should do that.

jan said...

Carol, glad you are keeping warm in the colder weather you are having. John too sleeps in warm ups. He is colder natured than me. I sleep all winter in a light gown. I can't tolerate heavy clothes for sleeping. We sleep under a down comforter and keep the house temp about 60 for sleeping. John would probably keep it at 70 if left alone. I probably need to get us a dual control elec blanket.

jan said...

I should get more interested in politics, but simply cannot. I too am disappointed in Obama. However, I don't know if anyone could have made a difference in the state of our nation who followed Bush. I cannot Blame Hillary for not wanting any higher or other office. I too have noticed that every president has had accelerated greying of hair when they take office - except Reagan.

We are having the annual Christmas luncheon at Nurs program today. Both my friend/coworker and the Dean's Admin asst will be there. I can't help but wonder how that will be.

jan said...

The Deans admin asst has made all arrangements for the luncheon so he has to attend. My co-worker has filed a restraining order against him so it should be interesting.

Anonymous said...

Hi Jan. Hope you let us know what happens at the luncheon today (the term 'Peyton Place' crossed my mind, but then I remembered how serious the relationship mess is).

I have to tell you I'm not necessarily an early adapter. Hubby usually buys me my little electronic play things, then I have no choice but to learn how to use them. I may not have ever found the internet with his encouragement quite a few years ago.

Anonymous said...

.. and I'll often take his hand me down phones whenever he decides he has to have the very latest thing on the market. He'd like me to get the newest thing too, but I just don't use the cell phone all that much (even though it's important to have with me). I'm sure you text more than I do too (which for me is almost never.

Carol said...

Jan, I don't know if you mentioned you didn't like salmon but even if you did, you must try that Alaskan wild caught "seasoned" salmon at Sams Club. The first one was called Moreys and then they stopped carrying that one and now have Pure Catch. They are wrapped individually and already seasoned. Come 6 to a box. The seasoning is the best part. Smells divine.

I don't care much for salmon but a friend told me about it. I tried it and have eaten over a dozen boxes since. Even Maggie is crazy about it and she won't eat other fish or shrimp. She dances around when she smells it cooking. You might also.

Don't microwave it. Put it on a baking dish and bake it 20 minutes or so if thrawed and 30+ if still frozen. Add your veggies and you have a health meal with those fish oils you need. I sprinkle with a little lemon juice but you know I like lots of seasoning and love lemon juice. All I need is a little food with my lemon juice.

Do you have a Sams? I looked at Cosco online and couldn't find it there.

Carol said...

Jan, I did spend many years being an early adopter but that stopped a good while back. I used an old, dinosaur cellphone forever because it had a longer range. I did get the Iphone but that was because I wanted to keep up with the blog. It does come in handy for work. I can look up things I need.

jan said...

Chloe, I remembered this morning that I had found something in the trash that came with John's Kindle. I got it out and gave it to him. It had a tele #. He called the number and got tech support. It was nothing more than "holding down a button for a specific length of time." He is much happier. Thanks for the info you provided. It helped.

Carol said...

Chloe I didn't even have texting until a short while back. Didn't think I would ever use it. I still don't use it that often but there are certainly time it comes in handy. I may not want to talk to someone or maybe just need to send a message and I can do that anytime without worrying about waking or disturbing someone. And you can get a quick message to people who don't like to answer their phone.

jan said...

Carol, we have Costco here and belong to it. We have a Sams Club but don't belong to it. I will check with Costco for the salmon. We both love salmon. I just make me a little sour cream sauce for it and some lemon juice. Yummy.

jan said...

I text some to my kids and grandkids. It is really easy and don't have to disturb any one - like Carol says.

Carol said...

I'm also interested in how "University Place" turned out.

Chloe I remember Peyton Place, well at least the concept even though I don't really remember much about the show. Now there are so many programs that are Peyton Place like.

jan said...

Is University place a reality show?

Carol said...

No Jan, it's what happened at your Christmas Party today. You know the Admin assistant and the NP.

Carol said...

Jan, I looked online at Cosco and couldn't find any of that "seasoned" salmon. You need to get the season salmon. It's so gooooood.

Carol said...

I made some chile last night for the cold weather and will have a little bowl with a big salad. I'm now buying this organic spring or herb mix little salad greens and the organic little spinach. Quick way to make a salad. Throw a little of each in a bowl and add all my other goodies.

A friend just called and said that Elizabeth Edwards is nearing the end of her earth life. I hope she has a better one on the horizon. I'm sure what John did to her didn't help her condition.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry to hear that about. Elizabeth Edwards Carol. Her having those younger children make it even sadder, and I agree that John sure didn't help her condition any either. Stress is a killer.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I'm so glad to hear that John has settled his Kindle problem. If you ever lose that number, you can go to Amazon.com anytime and get the numbers for tech support, etc. Amazon has wonderful customer service, which is why I use them so much. I also like that I don't have to pay taxes on the things I buy there, and often get free shipping. He needs to set up an online account there (if he hasn't already) so when he wants to download books, etc. they'll keep it all organized and recorded for him. They'll also offer online assistance, and numbers for any help you may need. Sounds like he has it all under control though.

It is really a wonderful site though. It's the first place I go when searching for anything - even shoes for Emma. I ordered most of her winter wardrobe online (although most of it from a place called 'The Children place' - they make shopping easy too, and there's one at the mall, but it's easier to just do it online.

Yep, these places make it real easy to spend our money. Ha - why wouldn't they! I do usually shop online to save money, but also for convenience. It's a lot harder to make the rounds now-a-days, so I've had to become more organized. Emma's actually been a very good influence on us, and like I said, I'm much stronger and focused, because of her.

Anonymous said...

Carol, You know you and SF don't have to have a traditional Christmas meal. You could just take something over there, and eat there with him, couldn't you? If you can't find anything open, that is. If I were you, I'd keep it simple.

Hopefully they won't be driving you crazy with calls from work over the holidays.

Anonymous said...

... if I can get out of here early enough tomorrow morning (not much after 8am) I going to try to take her to the mall to see all the Christmas decorations, etc. Maybe even get a peek at Santa (although I know she won't sit on his lap this year - not sure I blame her). I just have to get there an hour before it officially opens, to beat the crowds. We haven't been there in quite a while, and I don't plan on going again this year either. Too many people.

I'll see how it goes, and check in later tomorrow. Let you know if I survive it.
(I can tell you one thing, there will be no shopping while I there, unless it's to buy a cookie or something - just the play area and site seeing, and then out of there)

Take care.

Carol said...

Chloe, I agree with you about Amazon. I even bought a trolling motor there. I check on their customer reviews of a product before I buy anything even if I get them at stores in town.

Jan, was that party today or is it tomorrow? We want to know what happened.

Anonymous said...

Jan, I too would love to hear how your party went.

I can tell I'm either really stressed, or I'm just in my December mood (like the one where I kept trying to make the perfect batch of fudge daily - let's hope that doesn't happen again!). But today, I made brownies, and I almost never crave fudge, but today I was like a crazed animal while they were cooking. They really filled the void for me. Maybe what they say about chocolate having the love hormone is true. I feel much calmer, after scarfing up on more than I should have eaten. The rest will be safetly frozen away.

Anonymous said...

... Jan, I sure hope I didn't offend you with my stupid Peyton Place comment. I never watched that dumb program, and don't know what the term came to mind.

Hope you're doing well.

Carol - I like to check the customer reviews before I buy something too. That, and get a good idea what a fair price is.

I was so impressed when I saw these murals a while back that I saved a link to them. If you get a chance to view them, make sure you go to the previous and after pictures (which link on the upper right side of the pictures). My eyes really deceive me when I look at them, especially when I first view what the artist started with. The before and after is almost unbelievable.

Amazing 3D murals painted on drab city walls by Eric Grohe

Carol said...

That mural is really impressive Chloe. When I first saw the picture I thought, where is the mural? It was so good it looked real. It's amazing how 3D is was.

I do understand that craving you were having. I've been that way with my chocolate pecan candy I make. I think mine is easier and faster to do than yours.

Did you make the mall today? or Mickey Ds? That's what they call McDonalds around here.

Carol said...

I just heard that Elizabeth Edwards beamed up today. Happy Trails Elizabeth.

I always liked her and so much more than I did her husband, even before I knew what a cad he was. She was so genuine and he so phoney.

And like many couples, I think she was the brains of the couple.

Carol said...

Yes Jan, I hope we didn't make too light of your friend's problem with another jerk of a guy. We certainly are sympathetic.

Today I made of copy of this sign that hangs on the door of the jail Chaplain's office. I pass it everyday on the way to one of my offices. A couple of days when I was feeling overwhelmed I stained to remember what is said. It says

Good Morning
This is God
I will be handling all your
problems today. I will
not need your help--
So, have a good day

It is kinda peaceful to think about those words even though it could get me in trouble if I always lived by them cuz unfortunately She does need my help too often.

Anonymous said...

I like the sign Carol. I believe it too. I think if we just believe those words and lived by them, that things would all work out best in the long run. Sometimes we're afraid to just let things 'be' - and have faith in the future.

Anonymous said...

I am so touched by what I read in the article about what Elizabeth said on her face book recently - I read it several times throughout the day:

""The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered," she wrote. "We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful."

jan said...

Chloe,
Before I read any more, I want to say you have said nothing to offend me. I misunderstood Carol's "University Place" and have been away from my computer all day. I didn't get on much yesterday either. Last night my sis called me and I am very worried about her - so have my brain other places. I tend to "pull in" when I get worried or stressed. I am here and not offended by you or anyone else. Please believe me.

The party yesterday morning went very well. Both people were there and nothing happened. So all is well here. My friend is doing OK. She said this morning that she has been feeling ill for past week or so and I am sure that is result of stress.

jan said...

I too am so saddend by Elizabeth Edward's death. Chloe, thanks for posting the statement she made before her death. She didn't deserve to have her husband act like a jerk and then to have it all over the media.

jan said...

Hey guys - or in this case, girls. I thought the reference to Peyton Place was funny. I think I have just been preoccupied lately with stuff in my life. I also think the reference to "university place" was funny - I just didn't get it until you spelled it out for me. Sometimes I am really "slow"

jan said...

All the deaths are getting to me - Eliz Edwards and Don Meredith (John is mourning him). John gave him his senior life saving badge at Southern Methodist Univ. many years ago. In addition, a friend's husband died this morning. He was diagnosed with pancreatic CA less than 3 weeks ago. He was 64. It has been a little heavy around here. It will be better.

jan said...

In addition, my sis called this morning and needs money. I felt so bad that she had to call me- I should have checked on her. I sent her money. I am buying her out of her part of our jointly owned property, but we are getting all papers in order through legal and they are not ready yet. I can still begin paying her. I just had not checked on her.

I read with interest what you all have bought on line. I think the only thing I have bought on line was the electric pressure cooker and I was so nervous doing that. I do go on line to check my bank stuff but never do any banking online. John does and he buys stuff online. I told you all I was a Late Adopter. I am afraid to buy anything on line. Don't know why. My dad never used an ATM.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for inquiring about my little granddaughter. She is still in PICU and still on the ventilator. They were decreasing the settings and trying to wean her off the vent. but they had to increase the O2 today. I have been so worried and want to be there but Jeremy told me to wait. I hate being so far away with my little baby sick.

Mary said...

Chloe, those murals were unreal. Just to paint that would be great but to make them look 3-D like that is something else.
How is little Emma doing? Is she enjoying this season? I had to laugh when you said she wouldn't sit on Santa's lap. Jeremy sent me a picture of Lauren on Santa's lap. She didn't cry but she wasn't smiling much either. She's usually a pretty happy baby. I just hope she doesn't remember much of this experience.

Jan, have you ever done any smocking? I've been wanting to make Lauren a dress with smocking on it so I finally found a place here that was having a class on making this dress called "The Bishop Dress". The top part is smocked. So far, I've really enjoyed it. I was hoping to have it finished by Christmas so I could get a picture of her in it but it is very time consuming.

Hi Mary, I was so hoping to hear that little Lauren was doing better. Are they treating it as a virus?

And how do they get her to stay still enough to be on a ventilator? I've been thinking about you and Lauren a lot, and glad that you let us know how's she's doing. I just hope to hear better news soon.

When are you scheduled to go to Chicago?

"I tend to "pull in" when I get worried or stressed."

Jan, I do the same thing. I sorry to hear that you're worried, and hope your sister is OK.
.... and I hear you about these deaths being so depressing - and that John's good friend died of pancreatic cancer so quickly. It's a bad one, both to diagnose and how quickly it takes you. My father in law died from the same thing several years ago. I'm still worried about Michael Douglas, and look up how he's doing every few days. I'm not really believing the happy face he's putting on for the press - he's gone through hell (and hopefully back though).

And Jan, thanks for the tip on Glee. Emma love's musicals, which is why we turn on PBS Electric Company every afternoon (it's teenagers too). I'm going to set a Glee up to record (unless I can find one on line) and watch it with her.

(Guys, there's 8 different murals on that link (16 if you count the before pic), and they're all just as amazing as the first one.)

"I do understand that craving you were having. I've been that way with my chocolate pecan candy I make. I think mine is easier and faster to do than yours."

Maybe faster Carol, but not easier. Ha! I used the Betty Crocker fudgey, super deluxe supreme brownie (with extra Hershey chocolate pack included) mix with chocolate chips that I bought the other day. I guess I felt the attack coming on ahead of time. They were soooo good.

But now I'm over it (at least for the time being), and moving on.

The mall was a bit of a disappointment (just because of a sequence of circumstances). She enjoyed the sights a lot, but when we got to the play area, she was in a timid mood, so we couldn't stay there long. Grandpa and I are going to take her back 'together' Friday (he has the day off), and rent one of those little cars they have there to push the kids around in (she hates a stroller, and it's really rough both carrying her, and chasing her around when she's walking - or should I say running, which is the only way she walks (fast!). Then I will break away for a half hour or so, while they're in the play area, and spend a little adult time looking around. Weekends, he takes care of her where ever we are (they're like '2' kids together, and I have a lot of time to do whatever.

Loved reading your posts, and hope you all have a great day.

Evening folkes. I'm glad my fun shows are on tonight. It will be nice to have something pleasant to watch even if only for an hour.

I tuned into the news last night a while because I couldn't find anything else to watch. Boy did that depress me.

Oh, Oh, Oh, Obama. What a loser he has turned out to be. Does he think anyone is buying his BS.

Even though I don't like Keith, I did enjoy his giving it to Obama last night even though Keith is partially to blame. He was one of his big cheerleaders. I wish he would admit he made a big mistake.

Still feel sad about losing Elizabeth Edwards even though she now gets to see her son again, I hope. She did mention that after he died she was no longer afraid to die. I can see him coming to take her home.

Have you ever wondered if it was her illness that lead to John's cheating. I have seen other men take off or turn to other women when their wives get really sick, especially with cancer. I work with a lady that that happened to. He did come back when she started improving and then he had a stroke.
She didn't dump him then.

I can certainly see John Edwards as the kind of guy who couldn't have his spouse's needs more important than his.

jan said...

Hi Mary, glad to get news of little Lauren. We are saying prayers for her. I have never smocked. I don't make any clothing. I don't know why. Maybe someday. Smocking sounds like fun. If you make a dress with smocking, hope you can put a pic up here.

Carol, I have done some searching of the literature on how couples' handle disability and severe illness in families. You are so right - many men cannot take the diagnosis of illness in their spouses. My sister's husband left her for another woman when she had Crohn's when she was about 30ish. They had 4 children. She was in and out of the hospital a lot. I have also read that when a child has a severe illness or disability, frequently the fathers leave. Of course, there are lots of dynamics going on in the families that endure this.

jan said...

Chloe, how wonderful that your husband is such a good granddad to little Emma. I am sure that helps a lot. John has been great to help out with our little 9 year old granddaughter here. She is not his bio GD, but you wouldn't know that. We have been around her since she was 2. Talk about Terrible Twos. She wrote the book. But she has turned out to be a really sweet little girl. John loves her as much as I do. She was with us when he fainted last August after we had spent the day in Santa Fe. She was hysterical. She too thought he was dying. She was crying "please don't die grandpa, I don't want you to die."

jan said...

Chloe, It might take some time to get into the stories on Glee, but well worth it.

Carol said...

You know Jan, that loss had to affect Elizabeth's ability to overcome her illnesses and heal. I'm sure John has some big time karma coming. Actually it has already hit him. She became the star and he is a has been. And I don't think he'll find much comfort with what's her name.

Carol said...

Jan, did you sister's husband come back or did she marry someone else?

jan said...

Carol, interesting but I heard he was with her in the end.

Chloe, I went back and looked at all those mural pics. Wow! what an amazing artist he is. It boggles my mind how anyone can create something like that.

jan said...

Her husband remarried quickly. My sister remarried in about 3 years. She and her 2nd husb have been married about 35 years now. Her 1st husband's 2nd wife was about 5 years older than he and she died about 10 years ago. He is alone and very crippled with arthritis. His back is curved badly from the arthritis. He is my age.

My sister's husb has lung CA. He came down with it 3 years ago - had surgery almost immediately - they took out part of 2 lobes. The surgeon's said they got it all. HA! It returned about 1 year ago and he had chemo and radiation. His last tests have come back clean. He is 67.

jan said...

I agree with you Carol, I too think John Edwards' escapades caused her enough stress to worsen her disease. I guess we will not know for sure. I feel badly for their children.

jan said...

Sometimes I go a day or so without getting on here. I am trying madly to finish the 2nd quilt for the sister for whom I made the first quilt. I never know if I am using who or whom correctly - but who cares?

I am working on the border of the 2nd quilt. I hope to have the quilt finished by this Sun night. They are planning a trip here for C'mas. They have gone back and forth. MY DIL has MS so it is anyone's guess if they will make it.

I know some of you don't care much for Oprah but tomorrow Barbara WaWa is doing a interview with her. They have been talking about it on the View and it does sound like it will be interesting. Evidently Oprah did a lot of crying.

They were talking today about it today. They were talking about how much time she spends with Gail or Gayle, however she spells it. And that they didn't realize she still had Stedman in her life. Many people don't understand that you can have a close female friend in your life when you are married or have a close male partner.

I kinda can relate to Oprah and Gail. It was like I was Gail when you lived down here Jan. Nothing weird about that. At least we didn't think so. You were my bestest friend and Bob was the big brother I never had. I also got to share your kids as a bonus.

jan said...

I really feel badly for my colleague who was involved in an abusive relationship. She is still not feeling well. She says she has lost 7 lbs in past weeks and she is one, like you Carol, who can't stand to lose any weight. He is not threatening her any longer. She went to Univ police and signed a complaint. She has done all the right things. I just feel for her because of the stress. She went home sick at her stomach this afternoon.

jan said...

Carol, you were like a little sister to me. I missed you so much after we left LA. I guess I didn't realize how close you felt to Bob too. The boys remember you so well. I give them updates on you every so often.

jan said...

I wonder why you think of yourself as Gayle and me Oprah. Maybe you are the Oprah and me the Gayle- LOL>

jan said...

Carol, when is the Baba W. and Oprah show scheduled?

Carol said...

I think it is tomorrow evening. She might have two different interviews tomorrow probably ABC.

Carol said...

Hey, I'll be Oprah. Actually when they both went on that camping trip, Oprah did the cooking and Gayle just told her what she wanted to eat. So I guess I would be more like Oprah.

Carol said...

Without her money.

Carol said...

Jan, if you lived closer, your John would have to make some room for me. I have never found the kind of friendship we had again.

Carol and Jan, I sure have enjoyed reading the conversation between you two.

"We have been around her since she was 2. Talk about Terrible Twos. She wrote the book. But she has turned out to be a really sweet little girl."

Jan, I remember seeing the picture of your little 9 year old granddaughter. What a cutie, and you can tell by looking at her what a winning personality she has. Always smiling. I find hope in knowing you all made it through the terrible twos with her - and if she wrote the book, I guarantee Emma is adding a couple of new chapters though.

I'd simply forgotten how truly TERRIBLE the Terrible Two's are, and agree they're like a first adolescence (like you mentioned a while back).

Ha! This too shall pass.
- and I hope Emma turns out to be like your beautiful, caring little grand daughter Jan! (Those pictures you showed us at the time were with you and her grandpa too). It was easy to see how much she loved you both, and felt so comfortable being with you.

"You know Jan, that loss had to affect Elizabeth's ability to overcome her illnesses and heal."

Undoubtedly, stress may have hurried things along. But, even when he first started running in the primaries, they had already announced that her cancer was terminal (although treatable to keep somewhat under control). They knew it wouldn't go away though. Of course, even then, I don't know, his philandering may not have been the first time.

Elizabeth had their last two children when she was 48 and 50 - and that leads me to believe she may even had some hormone treatments to help her get pregnant. Even if not, the hormones have got to be running wild when your pregnant - and hormones are what help grow tumors. I have the same thing happen to a couple of other celebrities in the past, after having hormone injectives from fertility clinics, including Gilda Radner. Of course, this is just a theory (or maybec just a connection I have made) in my mind, but I feel sure there is a connection in some cases.

I read that about three years ago, Elizabeth was excited about a new treatment she was going to receive that involved putting her on an anti-estrogen. They apparently were hopeful it would help (I guess by slowing down the growth of the tumors).

Of course, part of the reason they probably decided on more children, was the loss of their 16 year old son. They must have been devastated - what worse stress could there be. Was it here, or somewhere else), that I read that she said that after the loss of her son, she was not afraid of dying herself now.

All that said, I agree with those who put blame on John for what he did. Speaking of devastating, there's no worse feeling than being betrayed (unless it's the loss of a child or loved one).

jan said...

Chloe, I have enjoyed your recent comments here about Eliz Edwards. I don't feel the need to defend John Edwards, but I do have to say here that we are all human and fall far short much of the time of doing the right thing. Sometimes living with the "perfect" person "ie. Eliz Edwards, it is possible that John just had to do what he did. I suspect she forgave him - and maybe we should also.

jan said...

Carol, I too have never had a friendship again like we had. I can assure you that once John knows you, he will love you too.

jan said...

John not only accepts my friendships and family, he jumps in and loves them too. He actually is a lot more accepting and caring about my family and friends than Bob was.

jan said...

Chloe, thank you for those very lovely thoughts and words about Taelor, our GD. Like you, when a child is loved as much as Emma and Taelor, they can't help but be sweet and kind themselves.

You mentioned 2 year olds and adolescents. It is funny but the two ages and stages seem to be very similar. LOL>

jan said...

Chloe, I have read when the tumors are in the reproductive system (breasts, uterus) usually the hormones like estrogen feed the tumors so her pregnancies probably were harmful to her for tumor growth. I have known other women like Gilda Radner who had ovarian cancer who did hormone treatments to get pregnant who died at an early age from the cancer. I had a good friend in Ark whose mother had died of ovarian cancer at a young age. My friend wanted a baby so bad - she took hormone treatments - still did not get pregnant- she and her husb decided to adopt a baby - then she died when the little girl was age 7 - of ovarian cancer. I have read that with ovarian cancer, it is not good to have the hormone treatments in order to try and get pregnant.

Well, enjoyed my visit with you all. I need to get to the pool and then to work. A busy day. Tomorrow, I am taking the day off.

Carol said...

Hope y'all had a good day today.

I was thinking today Jan if your friend would consider taking that guy who ripped her off to small claims court. It's just not right to let him get away with what he did. The limits in New Mexico is $10,000. That may cover or at least make a dent in what he got her for. Probably doesn't cost much to file a claim. Sometimes people don't think of that option.

jan said...

Good idea Carol.

jan said...

I had a good day. Both my appts cancelled out so I did a lot of work on the quilt. I am close to finishing it. I won't start another for a while. I am sort of tired of working on quilts right now.

jan said...

Won't be taking the day off tomorow after all. One of my appts had to be rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Its ok.

Good night and sweet dreams all.

Carol said...

Well I watched those Barbara WaWa interviews last night. Wouldn't have given either too high a marks but hey if I can find something on TV to watch that is more interesting than running to the bathroom or running for junk food, I'm happy.

Oprah has a very blessed lady. Sure she had high goals in her life, worked hard, but she was very lucky.

As far as the 10 most facinating people.....I think Barbara could have done better but it was consistant with these crazy times we're living in. When the people from Jersey Shore qualify for the 10 most facinating, we're really in trouble. And that Sarah Palin is a serious political candidate???

Anonymous said...

Carol, Did Oprah do as much crying as they said she would? I'll have to look up who she considered the 10 most fascinating people.

I read a while back that Time Magazine is considering naming Julian Assange as 'Man of the year'.

Anonymous said...

"I don't feel the need to defend John Edwards, but I do have to say here that we are all human and fall far short much of the time of doing the right thing."

I couldn't agree more Jan. I've heard so many people blame John's affair for her early death, but she did have terminal cancer 'before' she found out about it. It's impossible for us to look from the outside in at these couples relationships, and understand all that's going on. I wouldn't even try.

How horribly sad that your friend died so young, and when her daughter was only seven.

Anonymous said...

I read an article the other day about the lady that gave Edwards the money to support his mistress during that affair. Questioning her during the investigation, the last question they asked her was: “But what about John Edwards cheating on his wife? one of the investigators eventually interrupted.”

... and her answer: “All young men do that,” she breezily replied.”
John Edwards' Sugar Mama

jan said...

Chloe, a fascinating report about the money for John Edward's affair. Actually, after reading that, I am not so inclined to "let him off the hook" so to speak. I would rather put the hook a little deeper LOL. Thanks for posting that. Wow! what a lot of creeps some of these politicians are.

They are about to announce the verdict for the man who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart. I would like to see him go to jail and be housed with some really mean and burly guys.

jan said...

Well, better go. I had a good walk and swim this morn. Now off to do a little work.

Carol said...

Not all infidelity is the same. I ain't letting John off the hook. His wife had her cancer return and was somewhat neglecting her needs to support him. He's running for president. Not a good time to go bush diving and smiling for the video. Remember that, that woman was filming him during oral sex. How dumb. Then when a baby shows up he lies and dumps the blame on someone who works for him. He's a creep, in my book.

jan said...

Right on Carol.

The guy who kidnapped Eliz Smart from her bed at knifepoint and repeatedly raped her for 9 mo was found guilty. Justice will be done when he is put with the meanest SOB's that can be found in prison.

Ahhh, just finished reviewing a research manuscript for a nursing journal. I have been doing this for 6 years and I am ready to give it up. They always give us 21 days to do the review and send in the report and I always take all 21 days. I am such a procrastinator. Yet, I don't write and resign from the position. I don't get paid for it. It was part of my "scholarly" work when I was full time. Oh well, next time. I just hope it is at least a month before they send me another one. I am tired!
