Happy Father's Day all you Dads

Whether you planted us, picked us out or we just dropped in on ya, we all love and appreciate all your life long love, support and dedication. We just celebrated a new dad's baby girl here, we have a dad who is brave enough to hang out with us and help us with the rules, and we have a few lurker dads. We hope you all have a great Father's Day.

Happy Father's Day Solar. I've missed you. That was very funny what you wrote yesterday. Yeah, we let you think you run the place. When do we get a copy of that rule book. Seems like those rules change from time to time.

We talked the hospital into springing SF for 4 hours today. We are taking him out to eat. He's chomping at the bit to get out and I don't blame him. They are doing nothing for him. What a rip off. His Doc stuck him in the hospital and left town. We're not even sure why he's there.

Sis has been hard at work trying to get me to make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of at my house. That's not an easy job. I'm a hoarder, not like some who you see on TV but still a hoarder. Sis and roomie are meeting at the house while I'm at work tomorrow. It's best that I'm not there.

Can't say that sis has had an exciting vacation but we have eaten well. I keep asking sis if she's had enough of this heat yet. She says she can handle it better than I can cuz she was born in July. Every time I check her home temp it's been in the 50s. It's 53 now and we're hovering a degree below 80. I don't remember it being this hot here in June.

Carol said...

Speaking of the heat, sis and I were laughing yesterday about what an act of survival it was just getting from the air conditioned car into Walmart.

Good morning

Still keep forgetting that you guys are in the
hot & humids most of the time....ours just arrived this a.m, but hopefully for only a couple of days....

Here comes summer....

I suspect that most of us are a little bit of
a hoarder, even if not obsessive about it, there is always something you can say...well, I'll keep it just in case...I marvel at the
'stuff' collected in the room over the garage....

jan said...

Carol, how very generous of you and your sis to take your SF out for dinner today. He is a lucky man to have you to look out for him. I got what you said about having him in your life since you were 23. You have had a long relationship with him. You have done a lot to
connect with him.

I too am a bit of a hoarder - about some things. For many years it has been books. I have gotten rid of most of my nursing books now. I get most of my info off the internet anyway now. I still have many more books thought. I collect cookbooks which is strange b/c I don't cook that much and I tend to coook the same things over and over again.

I collect quilts and fabric - so I guess I hoard these. I watch quilting shows and yesterday one of the women that I watch on one of my fav shows said "I will never live long enough to use all my fabric." That is me. And I keep buying more. I do go back and use some I have in my "stash" however. I also collect old handmade linens too. I think anything made by hand by women is so precious. So there you go.

Carol, Mary, Ivy, Chloe, Coreen, Solar - What do you collect? if anything?

jan said...

Ivy, I finished the book of "wonders" last night. Wow! the last 50 pages had so many surprises. I couldn't stop reading. Yes, I did see the passage about 'faith and hope' The pastor turned out much differently than I thought he would. What a strong woman Anna was. I loved the ending. Please let me know what else you are reading. Now I will begin "March." So glad I have another of hers to read.

jan said...

Solar, A very happy Father's Day to you. Do you have plans with your son?

jan said...

One of my chores this summer is to shred a bunch of old papers that have collected in boxes in the garage. Many have ID info that I must shred. Not a chore I am looking forward to but I must do it.

Carol,

......have missed all of you also.! Fathers day is kinda bitter sweet for me. As you know my Father was not the "Father know best" type, more like Hannibal Lecter type....Can't remember any things fondly good thing...cept that he was a hard worker.......

Tom is 37 years old now, and not around as often,or as long as I would want him to be when he comes by to visit, even tho we talk on the phone or email each other often....

I just opened a Fathers day note from him ( I never would open one that wasn't hand written when he was growing up...had to be in his own words.!!!)

on Fathers day, I always remember the first time that I saw him...I know now that I loved him at first sight..and a big reason why I married my wife Judy, at the time he was 4 years old, and we took him every where we went....him and about 50 lbs of toys....

In his note the thing that stands out to me...is that he says that Your are never judgmental and always listen, give great advise.! "You are my best friend", now there is a real hallmark card.!!....love that boy.!!!

Solar said...

Jan,

"Carol, Mary, Ivy, Chloe, Coreen, Solar - What do you collect? if anything?"

Pinks.! It looks like...I have all of you collected in a little 19 inch screen.... hahahaaaaaaa

Tom,

will come by for dinner a little later, will go for a walk, but we won't do anything for Fathers day until later on this week....I always want us to go Golfing.....golfing is when I get him all day long, and have a cpl of drinks playing the game over in our heads.

I don't probe him about his life, or anything..I found out that he, or anyone else will tell me what they want me to know....if its important...they will tell me...if it's not....I will find out from some other gabby source HA.!

Coreen said...

Solar,

Enjoy your day...glad that Tom will be with you even if its a short time....& when you go
golfing, who gives the pointers, you or Tom?!!

Solar said...

Did anyone like that song that little L. E. and I danced too? One of my long time favorites...another thing that I collect....great memories...

Solar said...

Coreen,

My son Tom has always been a little pissed at me when it comes to sports...I can still out do him for a little while...I taught him Judo, boxing, football...all the ball sports..and he is average, he excels in music, he is like me, self taught, learned how to play many instruments.....

strike that, he did take piano lesson...just to keep Judy his -real- true -best -friend (they talk to each other special like..different but they are special to each other...he real father took off without even seeing him born...the shit.!!)

A pleasant surprise for me, was finding out that he reads, is interested in many of the things that I have been for years.....I used to talk to him about the things that I was reading...he sorta listened...I always that he was just being polite...but he is the analytical type..will listen and let you know later if he agrees or not with what has been said....another thing that he please me by saying....is that I had depth....there is no other thing that anyone could say to me that would be more important to hear......Oh but he also said that he did not agree with me on everything :)))

He does treat my collection of books, and tapes as a library and as a way to counter what I may have to say...it's like reading my play book....but it's not all in the tapes and books....it's in the ol cabeza...and I twist him around, and around......what fun.!!!

Solar said...

that he was polite= thought that he was being polite..sorry

Solar said...

Coreen,

Did U like that piece (song) that I danced with L E?

it is on a record that is called "Steppin Chicago Style" 13 songs on it and no names, My son Tom put these old songs on a disc for me...will see if I can find a cpl of other to dance to......wanna......??

Solar said...

later...going to the flea market, window shopping for something that I don't need.!

Coreen said...

Solar,

Pretty neat mellow jazz group...for me though,
I need to have lyrics in every song....

And without question, Solar, you are Tom's 'real father'....& from the way you speak
of him, you appreciate him as much as he does
you....

Coreen said...

Enjoy your walk around the flea market, Solar...

Coreen said...

And as far as items to hoard...yarn, bags of it, but seems whenever I want to knit something
I still need to buy more....

Carol said...

Afternoon everyone. Chloe, miss ya and hope everything is cool there. Let me take that back. Hope everything is good there. I know there ain't no cool over your way.

Jan, you win the high temp at 97.7 but only a 92 heat index. We win the heat index with 106, it was 111 at about 1p. My big sis, if she would be home, would win the low temp, with a a current temp of 54. Are they having an ice age up there?? Weird.

My sisters and I took SF out for lunch. He was hitting on all channels, ate very well and enjoyed his lunch. I asked him if he had eaten this candy bar I sneaked into his room and hid in a drawer. They won't let you bring anything in to his ward. He said he had and left the paper in the drawer. When I took him back, I dropped off another candy bar and picked up the old paper. If he was not with it, he wouldn't have even remembered that candy bar. Nothing wrong with his brain that can't be explained by being 81.

We hope to break him out this week to bring him home.

Hope you had a great father's day Solar. I liked what your boy had to say. You are a special guy and your son was a lucky guy to have you as a father.

Carol said...

Tony, if you drop by, happy Father's Day to you too and happy Father's Day to any other father's who may lurk here today.

HFD to all the Dads. Hubs is spending his day in front of the tube watching the golf match. Graeme McDowell, a golf-scholarship attendee at UAB, is leading the pack. If he wins the U.S. Open, it will give our sportscasters something to talk about for one minute other than Nick Saban.

Before I gave Hubs his gift which was the book, "Sh*t My Dad Says," I started reading it. Immediately, I started to get worried it was too much, that I'd made a big mistake thinking this would be a cute gift. The author's dad has apparently brought creative cursing to previously unheard levels. Not that I'd ever heard, at least, and I thought I'd heard it all, especially after the language of this one boss I had for about five years. People did quit because of his constant cursing. Turned out, I ain't heard nothin', as they say.

However, as far as the Father's Day gift, I was already committed. There were no back-ups. Well, that is except for a set of four golf ball corn-on-the-cob holders I found at TJ Maxx. Hubs doesn't need any more ties. So I went ahead and gave him the book, ready to take my lumps as needed.

First thing was, when he took it out of the gift bag, he reads the title aloud, "SHOT My Dad Says???" I'm thinking uh oh, this isn't going well already. Then Hubs figures it out and starts laughing. Better, I thought.

Then he exclaims, "Oh...I saw this the other day...I had this book in my hands at Powells and almost bought it." At this point I'm thinking, I'm glad at least he didn't already get it, and at least he WAS interested in it. Maybe this won't be a complete dud of a gift. But I'm still thinking, he's going to cringe when he starts to read it. Our language here is not puritan, but neither is it drunken sailor talk. Just a habit one forms when raising a daughter.

The intended repository for the book was the porcelain library, and sure enough that's where it went. Each time Hubs has gone in there today, I've waited for his exit with bated breath, thinking he's going to come out red-faced with rage.

Turns out, the sailor-swill is a hit. Hubs says it might be the funniest book he's ever read. That's saying a lot, and I'm not sure I totally agree. But I'll admit I've been laughing too. Like I said, stuff's funnier when you're not allowed to laugh.

Dodged a bullet. Men are hard enough to buy gifts for as it is.

Solar,
You have done the best thing you could do with your life: not repeat your father's pattern of behavior. You have fathered better than the fathering you received.

Today's "Thought for Today" in one of my books:

"My parents have passed many of their talents, not just their burdens, on to me. Realizing this could be a step toward repairing my relationship with them..."

"Everyone who plays a part in our lives offers something we might learn."

Carol said...

Quite entertaining story Ivy. I'm glad Hubs liked his gift. Tell him to be careful or he'll end up with some roids if he sits on the throne too long.

And why do men seem to like to spend so much time sitting on that throne? We'll at least enough time to read something.

Carol said...

I'd love for you to share one of the better quotes from the book.

Ivy Green said...

Coreen,
My mother put the knitting bug into me when she was here last month. I don't even have the kinks worked out of my technique, but I already am surveying yarns with a hoarder's eye.

My goal is to be able to make myself one of those cute felted handbags. I am looking for just the right pattern - EASY - but haven't found one yet. I saw a lady sitting and knitting the very one, but she got up and left before I could accost her for the pattern. I am on the look-out for both her or the pattern whichever comes first. That's the kind of "collector" I am with whatever it is that has captured my interest at the time. I'm a hunter-gatherer when it comes to collecting.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I can para-quote one that had me rolling:

"Kid, if kindergarten is busting your ass, I got bad news for you about the rest of your life."

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
Hubs has suffered with " 'rhoid rage" in the past, and he's careful now with preventive measures. lol

Ivy Green said...

Birmingham now has its U.S Open Golf Champion, albeit one with an Irish accent.

Carol said...

That was a good one Ivy.

Interesting that Hubs had that book in his hand a Powells and didn't buy it. He musta had an intuition that he'd get that book. Did you try to see if you were buying that book close to the time he was looking at it? You might have gotten some telepathy.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I had ordered it on line, and it arrived at the house the same day they were at the bookstore in Oregon. I think Hubs didn't buy it then because he bought other books, including a big coffee table size book for me about Lewis & Clark, the College, not the explorers. Since they weren't checking any bags, he knew they'd have to have all their souvenirs in their carry-ons, so was mindful of the weight-limit.

Jan,
You were asking about books. I ordered "City of God" by Beverly Swerling in the same book order as above. I usually order with a coupon and enough books to qualify for free shipping. That partly why I have a back-logged collection of books. I also like to collect books in a series, and have them arranged together in my bookcase.

Ivy Green said...

Carol,
I looked again, but there's not too many quotes from that book that can be shared on a "family page." It's definitely R-rated. Here's maybe the only other one:

"You have to pack a sandwich. It can't just be cookies and bullsh*t...No, I said if you packed it yourself, you could pack it how you wanted, not pack it like a moron."

Ivy Green said...

Oops...just heard the bathroom door close, and I have the book. Now I AM in trouble...lol

Ivy Green said...

Most of the "sh*t" written in the book sounds like alcohol-fueled verbal abuse, but being removed from its original context is what allows it to be funny. It's the humor of "suffering." Most stand-up comedians had dysfunctional upbringings. They help us be able sometimes to laugh at our own problems, or we will go insane. Besides, I have a feeling from some of the essays in the book, there's more soft-heartedness to this Dad than he wants you to know. Reminds me what the dad on "Everybody Loves Raymond" would be like it he weren't being censored on TV. Or Archie Bunker, everybody's lovable curmudgeon.

jan said...

OMGosh, you all have been busy on here.

Carol, Good to hear SF enjoyed his lunch and time with you and your sis. The bit about the candy sounds like he is pretty with it now.

Coreen, I am the same way with fabric when I am planning a quilt. I just have to buy more fabric - although I have enough fabric in my stash for a small fabric store. Sometimes I will buy fabric because it just looks so wonderful. I bought a packet of fabrics in Alaska 2 years ago and it was perfect for a baby quilt recently.

Ivy, I loved the story of the book for hubs. I too wish you could send more quotes from it.

Ivy Green said...

Hubs loves the Dad (the old man, Frank?) character on "Raymond." Makes sense now why he took to this funny book. Hadn't thought of that until I thought about it...The actor who played Frank passed away not too long ago, I think...lol

Morning. Back to work after 5 days off. Ugh! And I have an appointment with a lawyer, and old friend, after work to figure out what to do next to help SF and to protect me/fly. My little vacation seems to have flown by and was packed with intense stuff. I'm really kinda shaking inside. Why do things seem to all fall in on ya at the same time instead of one at a time with a little break inbetween?

It's closing in on time for roomie to move in and all I've done is stir up 32 years of hoarding. Well, big sis, has done a lot more but she meets resistance from me. It's a sickness folkes. She's meeting with roomie today while I'm at work. All I really have to do is get rid of enough to give new roomie half the room. Hey, I'm still the roomie also and there's no more room out here to put anything else in. I promise, I haven't bought anything but groceries in a long time. I overdo that but most are biodegradable.

Don't know if you remember Jan but when we were in grad school, I was all settled in the dorm room a while before you had to move over full time. Those rooms were little boxes and I had taken up the entire room. You were going to share one with me but I only think that lasted a short while because I had hogged the entire room. You at least had a house to go home to every weekend. All I had was the dorm room and a storage shed back at home.

jan said...

Ivy, the dad character on Raymond was too funny and he did pass away in the past year (I think). He played the Frankenstein character in Young Frankenstein.

Carol, the only thing I remember about our dorm room was that you cooked for us in it. I remember that when we talked at night after the lights were out, I would sit up in my bed and turn on the light when we talked and you thought that was funny.

jan said...

Ivy, I almost hate getting into a new book when I loved reading the last one. I started "March" last night and not nearly as interesting - yet. I think this is true for a lot of books I read though.

Another book I want to get is the one you and chloe have talked about - Love, Food and God (maybe not in that order):))

jan said...

Carol, when I am trying to get rid of stuff, I go through it and sort into: what I definitely don't want any longer, what I do want, and "maybe" piles. I had a box of land line telephones that I just sent to Goodwill. On the other hand, in 20 years these may be antiques.

jan said...

"Why do things seem to all fall in on ya at the same time instead of one at a time with a little break inbetween? "

Carol, I don't know why but the same thing happens to me. When that happens to me, I try to prioritize and just take one thing at a time and try to get it settled. Be sure to remember to "breathe." I find myself hyperventilating when these things happen to me (not the same things you are going through, but when everything starts coming down).

jan said...

"A pleasant surprise for me, was finding out that he reads, is interested in many of the things that I have been for years"

Solar, that is great. Sounds like he really looks up to you and you two have a good relationship. That is great. You are a wonderful dad!

I am off to work on 12 y/o GS's t-shirt quilt. We got a good start on it while she was here, but lots left to do.

Carol, don't throw out your t-shirts - my offer is a true one. If you have an extra McNeese one, I will take it.

jan said...

GS = GD

Carol said...

Jan, I LOL, again, when I read about your sitting up when we talked at night in the dorm. I would be all comfy, laying in my bed, eyes closed like I'm talking to a Shrink. You needed eye contact, even after the lights were out. I had forgotten all about that. We each remember such different things about those years.

I bet you remember that I had to set my alarm clock at least a couple of hours before I had to get up and then hit it off every 5 minutes. That drove you nuts and that is probably why you moved out. I can't blame you but I just couldn't wake up in the morning. Now I wake up before my alarm goes off. Some things do get better with old age.

Ivy Green said...

Jan,
I agree with your comment that "March" is less compelling than "Wonders." I think "Wonders" is Brooks's best novel to date and, ironically, her first non-fiction work, even though it was "People of the Book" that won her the Pulitzer Prize.

I sometimes take a break between novels if one I've just completed has affected me. Unless it's part of a series, then I am compelled to keep going. The "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon was like that for me.

The other book you mentioned is Geneen Roth's "Women Food and God." I have it, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Ivy Green said...

It drives me crazy to get to the end of a series-book, and then have to wait several years before the author writes the next sequel. Sometimes, by the time it's published, I've lost interest. Or maybe it's momentum that I've lost.

jan said...

Carol, so funny, I don't remember the alarm clock. I don't even remember moving out. I have no idea why I moved out. You are right, we each remember different things.

jan said...

I worked a lot on the t-shirt quilt tonight ironing on the stabilizing stuff. Not a good time to be ironing (hot) but I want to do this quilt. Glad to be finished with the ironing part.

jan said...

Ivy, a good idea. I only started the March book last night. I think I need some time after Year of Wonders. There was so much there. It is hard to believe what women have to take and that is still true.

Carol said...

Miss you Chloe. Hope ya'll are busy putting in more ACs. I need one for the pool. Sis went for a swim tonight but it was late and thing didn't go too well. The water was 96 last night, probably the same tonight. It never got that hot even in August. Sis went so late that the deer flies were out and biting. I forgot about them. They can get bad at sun up and sundown.

She also mentioned that the sun was a huge ugly ball in the sky tonight and it had a particularly frightening look about it.

I didn't go with her tonight because I needed to settle down after some of the things I learned from the lawyer I saw this afternoon. I think that some of the suspicions I was having may be spot on. Have to do some investigating. Maybe breaking pa out of the nut ward soon. They may be in on the conspiracy.

We wanted to have a little summer solstice celebration today but didn't get around to it. Sis did read a little summer solstice prayer from the Daily Word this morning before I left for work. I guess that will have to do.
