Winter Woes

The snowpack is creating problems for all the animals to get food...Look at the deer eating birdseed right after the storm (that is when I was able to get out there & throw seed) it is almost up to their
bodies...Finally after two weeks the snow is slowly melting, see the difference in the snow's height on the deers legs...

Another hungry visitor showed up the other day...foxy was digging in the snow right in the same area as the deer have been eating...
not to mention lots of birds, the skunk was out the other night too...

These pics are after the blizzard on February 9/10, 2013...

Fog came in one day & the deer were in deep snow almost up to their body...

It has taken two weeks for the snow
to melt (still lots out there) and I have thrown out bird seed everywhere front yard, side yard
wherever I could reach...so far have used 18 20# bags & still counting...no sign of large grassy areas yet, then at least the animals can find food...

Squirrels, birds, deer, fox (just saw him one day so far) skunk the other night all are coming for the seed...

Carol said...

Great pics Coreen. You have a zoo out there. I'd be afraid to take Maggie for a walk there.

Seems that I remember Renee talking about a bear getting to her bird feeder. Was that you Renee? Have you ever seen a bear Coreen?

Coreen said...

No bears so far, but there are bears in the area...A couple of years ago, there was a pic in the newspaper of one that was up a tree about 3 miles away that was a tagged bear that they returned to the reservoir behind my house (about 2 miles in the backyard)...

The morning the fox was out, I did
walk slowly after he left, he circled back as I was driving out...

The deer seem to know & watch from the woods at the times of the day I throw the seed out...When I startle one (me too) they stand there & pound the ground with one leg...not sure what that means, but don't want them to charge me, I get in the garage fast...I do talk to them when I drive in & they are out there, they don't run until I open the garage door....

Carol said...

Coreen, I think they are saying...put some more food down right here.

Carol said...

I'm happy that Hagel was approved as defense secretary. He's not a war hawk.

jan said...

Gorgeous pictures Coreen. What a view from your windows.

Carol said...

I can't stand of thinking of any animal being hungry. Mag and I go to the house early to feed the cats. I would rather not go so early but I can't enjoy myself thinking of their little empty stomachs.

jan said...

I like your theme song Carol. Or is this your ex theme song? If that is your ex, what is your current theme song?

Carol said...

Give me a few minutes to think about that Jan. I know there's a country song that should cover it.

Carol said...

Not country but it'll do...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBQxG0Z72qM

Carol said...

It's actually perfect!

Carol said...

And I do love Simon and Garfish.

Carol said...

I'm watching that women's movement program on PBS. I'm missing some since I have no pause button.

Carol said...

Very good!!

Carol said...

They have some great women in it!

Carol said...

And oh God, Phyllis Schlafly is also in it. Remember her?

Carol said...

Phyllis Schlafly was a closet feminist but too dumb to know it.

Coreen said...

Bella! Billie Jean! Gloria!

but the reminder that ERA still is not the LAW!...

Coreen said...

And yes I was dumbfounded that it did not pass way back then...

Carol said...

We have all those women to thank for what we've achieved but we still aren't there yet.

Carol said...

Remember when the Obama campaign tried to make Geraldine Farraro sound like a racist?

Carol said...

We have many good men to thank also.

Carol said...

I had several of my friends and acquaintances call me Murphy Brown.

Carol said...

I watched C Thomas's hearing and knew he was quilty. He got away with it, unfortunately

Carol said...

And too many women undermined Hiilary's chances to be president. I blame them more than men.

Carol said...

Still no equal pay. We haven't come far enough baby!!

Carol said...

Many younger women still don't get what was done for them.

Coreen said...

And in the end, what does it all go back to...what do I always tell you...it's always about the money...

That was the issue that women dropped the ball on...forget that
fantasy that you could have it all, never could...

And the woman who said she did have that 'burn' that her mom did
is the legacy of those who worked their ass off to get even close to equality...sad commentary on the state of women today...& why ERA is still not the LAW!...

Coreen said...

Blame the democratic party powers that be for screwing Hillary...

jan said...

I remember so much of this. Watching it too Carol.

jan said...

Women have always been the fiercest foes of women's rights in this country.

Carol said...

Great show.

jan said...

I remember that year in Houston. I really wanted to go but did not.

jan said...

Of course I was for the ERA.

jan said...

It is still on for another hour here.

Coreen said...

And there is still only one woman who should have been president...

Not sure that it will ever happen though...

Carol said...

Those women were afraid that their man wouldn't like them if they stood up for their rights. Who would want a man who would do that.

Carol said...

I'm not counting her out yet Coreen.

jan said...

Rights for women have suffered since Ronald Reagan became president.

Coreen said...

Neither am I Carol, just think that age/health may prove to be
a problem...

jan said...

I wonder if Hillary will have the will to go through it again.

Carol said...

Probably, but now many on both sides probably wish she was there.

Carol said...

Jan, I linked my new theme song. Did you check it out?

Carol said...

She'll have time to rest up and I bet that last job was much harder than being the president.

Carol said...

Jan, still has an hour to watch the show.

jan said...

Carol, I did check out your 2nd theme song. Love Simon and Garfunkle.

Carol said...

Well, it's wakie wakie. I don't pick what time I wake up, I just do and I don't fight it. When I get sleepy, I sleep. Don't have a schedule. I'll probably get sleepy again in a little while if the coffee I just had doesn't interfere. It usually doesn't.

Carol said...

Jan, I didn't care for most country music when I was growing up but I like it now, have for a while. I really can't tell that much difference these days. I like that there's a song for any occasion. When I was taking care of mom and not sleeping much more than about 2 hours a night, I had a lot of awake time on my hands. I had a good friend hurt me pretty bad. I selected and downloaded country songs that documented the evolution of our friendship. It entertained me and helped me deal with the hurt. I made a CD and sent it. I ended the CD with...I hope you dance by Lee Ann Wommack

Lee Ann Womack - I Hope You Dance

Carol said...

I love the Dixie Chics and this song they wrote when they were dissed for making that anti war statement.

Dixie Chicks Not Ready To Make Nice

Carol said...

And here's one that would have worked if we would have been friends when you were married to that abusive husband.

Goodbye Earl

Carol said...

One more for our blog group. Inspired after watching that PBS program last night.

Sister Sledge - We are Family

Carol said...

Now, I hope you got and danced just a little.

Carol said...

Let us know how it looks over your way Renee.

Carol said...

Happy Birthday-----! Hey, I didn't mention who. I'm sure there are plenty of BDs out there and y'all all have a great one.

Carol said...

We don't know Coreen's or Renee's. Is today either of your BD today?

Carol said...

I totally enjoyed that PBS show about our women leaders last night. It was even more of a hoot getting to share it with you guys.

jan said...

The strange thing is that his name was Earl. I had a strange feeling when I first heard the song by the dixie Chicks.

jan said...

Work again today and then off to NC early in the am tomorrow.

jan said...

I enjoyed the show last night too. It was a revolution, for sure.

jan said...

I read the Feminine Mystique too. I claimed to be a feminist back then and it was not a popular position at that time even with other women. I was living in Lake Charles and most southerners at that time thought feminists were like nazis.

jan said...

When I started school in Houston, Dr. Moffett said to me "I can't believe Bob is letting you go."

RebelliousRenee said...

We are family. I got all my sisters with me. We are family. Get up everybody and sing. We are family. I got all my sisters with me. We are family. Get up everybody ...

YEEEEEEHAAAAW! Now that's a way to start the mornin'.

Whenever I hear that song I think of the movie The Birdcage and Gene Hackman in that gown and wig.
Thanks for the inspiration, Carol... I posted that clip form the movie over on TM.

Carol said...

I did my small part here and there for the women's movement. All that I could do here.

Carol said...

You're quite welcome sister Renee.

RebelliousRenee said...

Yeah... I live down the road from a mountain where several black bears den. If I'm too lazy to take my bird feeders in at night during certain times of the year, they take them down.

No BD for me.... mine is 9/11...
it was my 47th the day the planes struck.

Carol said...

Dang Renee, that's a bad break.

Carol said...

But at least one good thing happened on that day.

RebelliousRenee said...

Coreen...
beautiful pictures. I've had deer in my yard... but only one at a time. It's good to be wary of any wild animals. Every year you hear of stories of people who thought something was cute only to be injured or bitten.

It's snowing here today. It keeps changing from hard small pellets to big fat flakes.

Coreen said...

Starting slow today....but it's only raining here...windy & cold, but no snow...

Renee, looks like you're getting the snow...rain continues here into early afternoon, so you may have a way to go...

As for the deer, usually see a few every week, but not as much as when there is a snowpack like this year...have been seeing 7-9 each day since the blizzard...I feed the birds all year
& everyone seems to know to stop by for a snack...

Coreen said...

the pbs series was interesting & brought back memories...but hard to think of it as 'history' since I remember when some of it was happening!...

Forgot to mention this...saw it after seeing Jane Fonda oscar appearance (she looked fantastic)...& maybe 72 is the new 30, but between wrinkles (that just keep showing up & aches & pains every a.m. getting up) just not so sure!...(not complaining since many have real problems, just saying)....

72 is the new 30

Coreen said...

And that pbs show had a woman author, rita mae brown as one of the early feminists...had to check since I only know of her as the author of the 'sneaky pie brown' (feline) mystery books...

Carol said...

I'm very familiar with Rita Mae Brown. Read a couple of her books years ago. She was with one of the women tennis pros. Was it Maria?

Carol said...

I mean Martina.

Carol said...

I plan to watch that program again. I missed a few minutes here and there. It's available at PBS.org.

Just called for a hair cut appt. Usually I have to wait for a while but I have an appt this morning in just a few minutes. It's a beautiful day here. Don't feel too bad. When y'all have those nice summer days, we're cooking.

Carol said...

I have a tomato and a parsley plant to pot today. It's early but I can take them in if it gets too cold. I want some of those home grown little grape tomatoes. I do have many herbs at the house but only some chives and green onions left here. I'm not going to overdo this year. I used to be guilty of that. Not anymore.

jan said...

Love the dixie chicks. They said something about Bush and they were essentially blackballed. I think it hurt their careers. Bummer.

Carol said...

That second song, Not Ready to Make Nice, was their response to that dust up Jan. They got a lot of hate from what they said at a concert.

Carol said...

I'm at the hairdressers waiting.

Carol said...

They were opposed to the war. They were right. You have to speak your heart and live with the consequences.

RebelliousRenee said...

Rick and I aren't much into country and western music... but we did buy that Dixie Chick album to give them support.

Looks like our forecast is better than predicted. We did get about 3 inches of snow... but now it's just raining. Saw the noontime local news and the snow line has moved north of here.

It looks like we may make our outing tonight. Rick is a huge Thoreauvian and a long time member of the Thoreau Society.

Carol said...

Renee, I think Thoreau and I would have hit it off. I just went to Wiki to reintroduce myself to him. I read..". As Thoreau made clear in his book, his cabin was not in wilderness but at the edge of town, about two miles (3 km) from his family home."

Interesting that my camp is less than two miles from my home. It's on a river and not a pond. I'd rather my river. I doubt he had a computer or a blog to hang out on when it got lonely out there.

Carol said...

I'm glad your weather turned out better than you expected ant that you can go to your meeting.

Carol said...

I feel right at home with the name Thoreau also. It would fit in with our Thibedeau's and Robicheau's and Breau's and all the other eau's around here.

Carol said...

I think I've told you'll that I have no Cajun in my heritage but I've been here long enough to have acquired some through osmosis.

Carol said...

I'm English, Scotch-Irish, Polish and Czech. Almost Heinz 57.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol...
a lot of people think that Thoreau lived as a hermit for years in the woods. Not so.... he did live in the woods on Walden Pond on land owned by Emerson for about 2 yrs. He went there because his brother John, whom he was very close to, died. He went there to grieve, write, and contemplate life. He continued to work in the family business and walked to town every day.

We can get to Concord, Mass. in a little over an hour's drive. We've been to his cabin and grave site many times. Rick has every book he's ever written and many written about him.

Thoreau was also a botanist and spent years doing detailed drawings and cataloguing the plants and flowers found in Concord. He's a very interesting fellow.

Carol said...

So many of our Cajun French names have an x on the end like Thibideaux or Breaux. I learned from someone doing research into the culture that that happened because when their names were entered into the church roll, they couldn't read or write so someone else entered the name and they put their x next to it. Later the name got recorded with an x on the end. Not sure if that is true but it sounds reasonable.

jan said...

Always wondered about that x on the last name of so many folks there in your part of La Carol.

Renee, love the movie, the Birdcage. Funniest movie ever.

Carol said...

It's been years since I've seen that movie. I'll have to check on Netflix to see if they have it.

Carol said...

Jan, not all people with those French names have the x on the end. That's why the explanation I heard makes sense.

Carol said...

I just read on a local new's source that a biochem Prof at our local university here is studying alligator blood for it's potential for killing bacteria. Seems gators survive and thrive in a bacteria and fungi filled environment. They can have huge injuries, missing limbs, massing big parts of their tail and still be healthy. The white cells from the gator kills staph, e-coli, salmonella, strep, and even strains of HIV. Pretty neat, huh.

Carol said...

Those gators aren't just another pretty face.

Carol said...

I'll keep an eye out for the pharm co that ends up marketing that product if it works out. We need some new antibiotics and a company that comes up with one will be a very good investment.

Carol said...

Maybe I should use the term...allibiotic.

Carol said...

I feel sooo much better after having my hair cut. I was long overdue one. Do you find that when your hair looks like crap, the rest of your body follows suit?

Carol said...

It's 75 degrees outside. A very nice day. Trees are budding out. Spring is in the air. And in my nasal mucosa, a little stuffy.

Carol said...

I picked up some Chinese takee outee for supper. I thought about making some stir fry but thought about everything I needed to get, all the work involved..and decided it was pretty cheap, and sooo much less work, to just buy something already made.

Carol said...

If you have a large family, making dinner at home is usually cheaper but for one, maybe two, buying something already done is cheaper. The only problem is, there's not too many things out there that I like.

Carol said...

If there are any gun lovers lurking here:

For all you gun lovers

Carol said...

Renee, I liked the Dixie Chicks but just don't buy that many CDs. I bought their CD also to support them when they had all those people destroying their CDs and attacking them because of what they said at that concert.

Carol said...

I was wondering if any of y'all caught something that Shirly Chisholm said last night in that Women's Movement show? She said that she had suffered more discrimination as a woman than she ever did as an AA. Doesn't surprise any of us.

Carol said...

And who's to blame for that, when we are a tad over half the population, and often hold the key to the vault(if you catch my drift)?? That vault holds a lot of power.

Carol said...

Our politicians have a sinster plan up their sleeves with this sequester business. They are going to try to take away everything they can so when they throw us back a few peanuts, we'll all say thank you master.

Carol said...

Well, those are my tweets for the day..if I were going to tweet.

Carol said...

And one more tweet...for that vault control thing to work... you must have some self control...and a back up under the bed.

jan said...

It was good to see all those women movers and shakers. I just despised phyllis Shafley. She was such a hypocrit.

jan said...

Hard to believe Sarah Weddington was only 26 when she argued Row V Wade to the Supreme Court.

jan said...

We got our takee outee tonight. Also chinese. We bought one meal we will share. Do not want to leave leftovers while we are gone.

We took Ryley to board her this afternoon. It was so sad. It is hard to do.

jan said...

Carol, cannot believe it was 75 there today. It is still cold enough for a jacket outside. The sun does warm up the car nicely but when you step out you need something more.

Carol said...

It's going to get cold again with night time temps in the 30s. Yuk.

Carol said...

Here's where visitors to the Swamp came from over the last week, if you are interested.

Coreen said...

Jan, enjoy your dream camp...isn't that's where the biltmore is near?...

Coreen said...

Almost forgot...DWTS newbies announced...

I have 2 favs before they dance...

Dorothy Hamill & Ingo Rademacher (General Hospital regular until last year)

DWTS Season 16 cast

Carol said...

I can't believe my Modern Family channel went out for some strange reason, satelitte and air. My fav program of the week. Well, I can watch it online tomorrow.

Carol said...

Never heard of that soap star. How old is Dorothy?

Carol said...

Who were the rest of the dancers?

Coreen said...

You never watched GH did you?...

Dorothy is in her 50s...

Carol said...

No, never.

Coreen said...

Look at the link for their pics & profiles...heard of a couple of them, most don't know...

Carol said...

Don't see a link

Carol said...

Now I do. I missed it.

Carol said...

Half know a few of them.

Carol said...

Yes, have a good trip tommorrow Jan. Will you have any time to check in with us? When will you be home?

Carol said...

Well, it looks like there is going to be a conflict again between DWTS and The Voice. I really enjoyed The Voice last year, more than DWTS. Too bad they couldn't do those on different days. The Voice has two new coaches, Usher and Shakira. I'm not sure if I'll like them like I did the others. I'm certainly not crazy about DWTS judges.

jan said...

Looks like a fun group of DWTS stars. I loved Dorothy Hamil. I also like Wynona Judd. I don't know any of the guys. Should be fun.

Carol, I am taking my computer and will check in at night.

Our plane takes off at 6 something. John has set the alarm for 4 am. Probably won't sleep well. All packed. Just have to jump in the shower and dress.

Taking the camera. Hope to get some good pics.

Night all.

Carol said...

I had to give up following that Arias trial. It was way past my ick tolerance but if anyone wants to see just how evil a woman can be, it would be a good example. May be a lesson to men, don't exploit women for your pleasure, you don't know what you might be dealing with.

Carol said...

Have a safe trip Jan. Hope you have a wonderful time and get some good pics.

Carol said...

And that Jodi girl. I don't think that I've ever seen a better liar. She was sooo good that she was starting to convince me she was telling the truth. Someone on that jury might be in trouble. I don't think that I've ever seen a case like this one. It's one for the textbooks. Shiver.

Even though she is such a good liar, I don't think everything she's saying is a lie. I think this boyfriend that she was sooo addicted to, was taking big advantage of it to get his rocks off. There's enough evidence of that. A audio tape where he said he wants to tie her to a tree in the woods and do every animalistic thing he can do to her. I think he was working his way through some of those things. That's not Mr. Sweet and Innocent. I think that she was willing to do whatever he wanted, whatever, to please him and he used her and tried to throw her away.

I think he also told her that all this weird sex was OK by his religion, the one that he baptisted her in. It just couldn't be regular sex, like God wanted that saved for marriage. Hey, Bill C tried something similar to that and it didn't work out that well for him. And this went miles past Bill's, not qualified as sex, stuff.

I forgave Bill. A president should have a couple of perks, if done with a willing participant, in the privacy of his own office and most likely set up by the opposing party to try to bring him down. Yep, I think they took advantage of his achilles heel. I felt it coming and I think he even knew it was coming.

I have to tell you that I had more than one arguement with members of the opposite sex about Bill. They were doctors and other Republican men, who could have been voted most likely to be cheating their asses off and plenty of rumors that they were. The bigger the cheat, the more intolerant they were of Bill. Isn't that funny? It was sooo obvious that I had to laugh.

That old saying that the guilty dog barks the loudest has a lot of truth to it. How many of those big family values guys, who preached anti this and anti that, had soo many of those anti's in their history?? Yep, it's not something for anyone else to do but OK for them to.

Carol said...

Yep, my leaning left, was a rarity in the medical profession down here in the south. I think that I might have run into one other over the years and they kept in under their hat. I was not capable of doing that. Hey, you guys are well aware of that by now. Even it is gonna do me some serious harm, I'm gonna speak out. They even ganged up on me. Some people used it for their entertainment. They would push my buttons and stand back to watch the sparks fly. I finally caught on to that when I noticed the smiles that came over them after they pushed my buttons. After that, I'd either just smiled back, or if I was in a fiesty mood that day, I'd go off. Sometimes you just need a good release. It was one way to get my aerobic activity in for the day. It got my heart rate up and I didn't even have to get sweaty to do it.

Carol said...

Renee, I hope you and Henry David had a good visit.

Carol said...

On this sequester BS, I can only go to someone who I trust and that's Elizabeth Warren.

"Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) condemned the possibility of sequestration and urged her fellow lawmakers on Monday to reach a deal to avoid the automatic spending cuts.

...Warren described the sequester as “just plain dumb,"

Warren also conveyed her disgust for how negotiations in Washington work.

We seem to have a government that works only by holdout," she said, according to the Globe. "I don’t know anything more to do but get up and talk to the American people."

Yep, she's got their number.

Carol said...

Most of those people need to be looking for work next election go round. We could do it. Don't worry about them though, they have enough of our money socked away to get by.

I had a lot of laughs at the beauty parlor yesterday. I've known my hairdresser for years. I've been deep sea fishing with them. I was telling her that I sure would like to find a guy who liked to fish but didn't want much more. My bones couldn't tolerate anything real intimate. If I can't even lean over my armrest in my truck, I'm not likely to tolerate any more pressure on them and too old to be interested.

The hairdresser at the next chair said..just find some guy who can't get it up anymore. I told her..what you talking about, with Viagra, they can get it up even if they can't get up anymore. I don't think God intended for things to work after they died a natural death. It's not good to mess with mother nature. It could cause blindness I've heard.

RebelliousRenee said...

OMG Carol.... you are tooooo funny. That last post had me busting a gut from laughing.

First we had a very good meal over at our friends house. Then we went to see the Thoreau thingy. It was great. The actor did an impressive job as Thoreau. Actually, he was an historian. He travels all over the country doing this and said he never imagined being able to make a living this way... but he does.
Very glad the weather didn't keep us away.

Jan... I loved watching Dorothy Hamill skate. That was back when they were judged more on grace and not all these jumps.

And I used to watch GH, but haven't for a long time. If memory serves me correctly, I think that actor is Australian and played a character called Jax.

Carol said...

Renee, when you speak of a good meal, please be a little more descriptive. I love to hear about a good meal. Remember...I don't eat to live, I live to eat.

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol...
it was a simple meal... baked chicken, fettucini, noodles, and broccoli. The chicken was marinated over night with Italian dressings and was moist. The noodles were drizzled with a touch of butter and parmesan cheese (so much better than stuff swimming in heavy cream sauce). And the broccoli was steamed to perfection. We washed it down with cheap box wine... and finished off with homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

We prefer simple food. Fancy meals like we had on Valentine's Day are a rare thing.

Carol said...

Thanks Renee, that worked for me. Yum.

What housework has to do with waistlines

Carol said...

Hint Coreen, I try hard to avoid reading anything about housework. Not a subject of interest. I'm still looking at lots of stuff that needs to be gone through and either thrown away or find a place to put it. I'm more than half way through it.

Carol said...

I took all this stuff out of my kitchen and there seems to be more than will fit back in. I wasn't paying attention to the phase of the moon. Confused?

Working with my SF out in the crop fields, I learned that when you dig a hole, it will depend on the phase of the moon whether you have not enough soil or too much soil to fill it back up. Now you may say that sounds like a bunch of BS. So did I at one time but I've seen it happen.

This came from a Yahoo Answers blog:

"It depends on the phase of the moon. A hole dug during the full moon will have an excess of dirt left over. A hole dug during the new moon will not have enough dirt to fill the hole."

I must have unloaded the kitchen during a full moon.

Coreen said...

Coreen, I can't avoid doing housework but I hate, hate, hate it. It just won't stay done.

I pretty much know how smart Maggie is. Smart enough but no rocket scientist. Often she out smarts me.

Carol said...

Maggie is extremely manipulative. Often it works for her. She can read me like a book. She can be sleeping but if I start even thinking about doing something with her, I'll look over at her and she is staring me down.

Carol said...

I see that there's a chance of snow thru Saturday where Jan's going. I hope she's not doing a cabin this time.

It's chilly here and I'm having another one of those cold to the bone days.

I wonder if Paula Deen has lost weight because she's doing everything right or because she's doing everything wrong. When the blood sugar is under good control, weight loss is very difficult to accomplish. Cooking, especially her style, and being around that food would be a challenge for the toughest of people. I'd like to see her HA1C.

jan said...

I am enjoying reading your latest comments - everyone.

Renee, your meal is making me salivate. Just call me Pavlov's dog.

Coreen, I read the article. I would love to know how to do the test on Ryley. We think she is pretty smart. One of the things I have read about dogs is that they want to please the top dog (or alpha dog). John is definitely the alpha in our house. When we both come up the stairs in the morning, it is John she runs to first.

We think she understands some of the things we say. She loves to go with us if we are going somewhere. When we are putting our coats on, she starts doing a little dance. If John tells her she can't go with us, she stops dancing and jumping around and stands in one place and will not follow us to the door but if he says "you can go with us Ryley" she runs to the front door.

jan said...

If we ask Ryley if she is hungry or if she is ready to eat, she will run toward her food bowl.

We are here in NC. We have had all our meetings for the day and are in our room now. We have wifi in the rooms this time.

We got up this morning at 4 am to catch a 6 am flight. I slept a good bit on the trip. It is a 2 hour time difference here. Hope I can sleep tonight.

This is our 6th and last intensive. In a way I am happy about it and in another way, I am sad as we will miss the friends we have made here.

jan said...

Carol, I too enjoyed your story at your hairdressers.

jan said...

So far no snow here but is colder than Albuq.

Our room is warm and cozy. That has not always been true here.

Carol said...

Glad to see you got there OK. I've watched for your drop to arrive. I fell asleep and woke up and saw that your drop was there. We used to have stars on our map and now we have drops. I never make a drop. Don't know why. Must be that my Internet server doesn't show up on that map as a drop. It says that no one is home and I'm here, but invisible.

I've watched the weather there where you are and where you live. It's pretty cold at night, where you live also. I wonder if it seems so much colder there in NC because of the high humidity. To me, damp cold, feels colder.

Now, your days in NM warm up nice big sun.

We are now seeing some candidates, even Dems, who have been aligned with the NRA, losing to other Dems were aren't. The worm has turned, a little. It's a start. Thank you very much.

Woke up to Racheal Maddow's show. Not sure how my TV got on MSNBC. I do like Rachel, I've just not spent a lot of time watching any cable news anymore. It used to be all I ever watched. There were years and years that my TV was on some cable news channel 24/7, when I was at home. I had the news memorized.

It helped when I moved out to the camp. I didn't bring my satellite here for a good while. Left it for the roaches to watch. Figured it could kill them for a while. All I had here was the Networks that I could get over the air, not much. It broke me of that addiction. When I got the satellite moved here, I didn't return to my addiction. I do relaspe occasionally.

I think Renee, you might be where I used to be but you do take breaks with your sports. They give you a break from all the heartbreak that is in the news. I just can't watch that crap anymore. It was killing me.

Carol said...

Over half of the Republicans voted against the violence against women act but it passed anyway. What were those Repubs thinking??

It's stuff like this that was killing me.

I do try to keep up by scanning online news sources and the short new's programs on Network and my boys Jon and Stephen.

Carol said...

Oh, some of those Republicans didn't want to support the VAWA because it would protect lesbian, Native American and immigrant women. I guess they don't care for those women. It's OK to hurt them.

Carol said...

I think that all women, on both sides of the aisle, voted for the act. Thank you very much also. That makes my heart happy. We are making progress.

Carol said...

There was a reason why the Universe tuned my TV on to MSNBC tonight. It was synchronicity. It wanted to make my heart happy.

Carol said...

I also keep up with what's important in the news at TM.

Had a good laugh at the Big Bang tonight. It was a hoot. Watched Parks and Recreation, and just a little of HLN, to catch up with the trial, then fell asleep.

I'm still sleeping in my comfortable new recliner out here. It is very comfortable. I just can't sleep much more than 3 hours at one time but I will fall asleep again and take a few short naps if I have time during the day.

I'm fixing to settle down again to sleep and listen to C2C. They had a good program I wanted to hear, can't remember what it was now but I'll bring it back up and fall asleep listening to it. The more interesting it is, the faster I fall asleep. Weird.

Guys, you know that humor is important to me. I need to laugh. I know that much of what I talk about here is stressful and some would rather not have to read it but I try to add humor when I can find some in something. Thats one of the things I like about Trailmix. They do the same there.

When I was teaching, I got high scores on my evaluations on humor. Always a 10, that's the highest score. It wasn't just gratitious humor, it had to make a point. I wasn't in there to entertain my classes, I was there to help them learn something and I took that responsibility seriously.

Same with the patients I took care of. I often had them laughing, but sometimes I also had them pondering. I took that job seriously also.

I remember something one of my friends said, the one I went camping and canoeing with in Arkansas. We got up one Sunday morning and I asked him to do the Sunday service that day. He was an atheist. I think I told you that I went on that trip with 3 atheist. Scared me to death, being in some seriously parcarious situations with 3 atheist. I did some extra hard praying that week. I said God, please don't take these people while we're out here in the wilderness. I can't make it alone out here. She accomodated me because there were serveral times that we missed a good chance to die. Phew! They just don't realize that they have me to thank for still being alive, if they all still are.

Well, my friend, gave the Sunday service that morning. It was short and sweet. He said....anything worth doing is worth overdoing. I think that I live by that. I often overdo things, kinda the story of my life. Can't help it Coreen. That sermon moved me.

Carol said...

Not all of those people are still atheist now, I'm sure. My big sis was one of them and she's not. She's very spiritual. She's been all over the map when it comes to her spirituality. She started her life being "super religious". I didn't even like her when we were growing up. She looked down her nose at her two dumb twin sisters. See, that's what happens when people are super religious. It's not a good thing. Being religious and being hateful/intolerant too often go together. Isn't that a shame. Really don't think that that's what Jesus had in mind.

Sis went to college here and graduated in three years and the church here gave her a scholarship to a "religious" university, Scarritt, in Tennessee. A couple of years there cured her. That's not uncommon. She got to see the hypocrisy in religion. She was enlightened so to speak. She's been quite a fun person ever since. LOL. She was particularly fun right after she converted to heathen but sometimes I worried about her soul. You have to find somewhere in the middle IMO. She did that.

Carol, John says most people (including him) go through that questioning of their religion or athiesm when they go through seminary. John went to college at Southern Methodist Univ and then 3 years of seminary there. He started out as a Methodist minister as a youngster and then after about 6 years he became an Episcopal deacon for 6 years, went to Episcopal seminary 1 summer and studied under 3 different priests for a couple of years and went through cononical exams to be an Epis priest. So he is a scholarly priest. He also has done several years training in Clinical pastoral education. He does not question the existence of God any longer but he sure questions the place of organized religion all the time.

He is one of the most knowledgable people I know about the bible but he questions it too. Baptists believe in the infallibility of the Bible which is hilarious when you really think about it since the bible tells parents to kill their own kids sometimes or to stone people for certain things.

jan said...

Carol, you are one of the best teachers I have known. We taught classes together and you were always so well prepared. Real humor is when people can laugh at themselves and you do that. Much of your humor comes from your stories you tell on yourself.

Carol said...

Thank you Jan. I have you to thank for leading me to education. God put you in my life for a reason. So did he put the rest of you there also. Only the significant people will stick around.

I was hoping you'd share some of John's experience. It is a very common one.

jan said...

Woke up to read that the violence against women act passed. What is the deal with the republicans about not passing the act for Native Amer women.

Through the years, living in NM I have joined the Indian nursing Association there called the New Mexican Indian Nurses Association. NMINA. They have nursing conferences every year. I try to attend each year. One year the theme was domestic violence in indian communities. Most of the violence toward Native women is from white men.

Does that not make you want to spit when you think of the Repubs not wanting to include Native women in the violence against women act. that just boils my blood.

Carol said...

God told me that my life wouldn't be the easiest life but I would have a few laughs along the way. I look forward to them. She's also given me some really nice gifts. This camp is one of the best gifts.

Carol said...

Yes Jan. Rachel said that the Native American woman was shit out of luck both inside and outside the reservation without this VAWA.

jan said...

Carol, we encouraged each other in school and in so many other things and there were times we were also thorns in each other sides. So yes, we are in each other's lives for different reasons.

I do believe that God did put Bob in my life because it was not my time to die. Jung would have called it Synchronicity.

Carol said...

I'm no Bible scholar. I've been drawn to study certain things here and there. I was raised in the Methodist church and I'm glad that my family saw to that.

I think that there are two things that Jesus tried to teach us. Two very important things...to love one another and to be tolerant. I think too many people missed that lesson.

Carol said...

At times, I struggle with that lesson also.

jan said...

"Only the significant people will stick around."
Carol, Never thought of this before. You are onto something here.

Hope your day today is filled with good food, good fellowship and enlightenment.

I just read something on FB that all the women in the House and Senate voted to pass the Violence against women Act. Without all these women it would probably not have passed. So proud of all of them. We must work harder to get a more equal representation of women into Congress and the Senate and the Supreme Court too.

Carol said...

Oh, and my definition of Nameste is...the God in me, salutes the God in you.

I couldn't believe that the Catholic church actually had that song in their songbook. You should have heard me belt that one out when they had it listed as a song for the day. Catholics weren't used to singing in church like us Methodists and Baptists were. I was often singing all by myself but I didn't care.

Carol said...

And since they wouldn't let me go to communion, all I could do when everyone else went was to kneel and sing. The pain that was coming from my knee caps helped me hit the high notes. LOL.

Carol said...

And you just attended the church of the Big River.

Good morning...
Enjoying reading the exchange between you both, Carol and Jan.

Coreen... thanks for the best wishes... I promise I'll have fun a my vacation.

I've got a lot to get done today... I'll try to sneak back in later...

Enjoy the day!

I want to know if that VAWA got passed because Boehner’s broke the “Hastert rule” and brought it up to the House for a vote? I know that many Repubs voted against it.

If that is the case, then we need to give credit where credit is due. If not, then our bitching has no meaning.

Carol said...

We can't follow the same rules that many of the Repubs do and just be anti everything they all do.

Carol said...

We are closing in on 200 comments. I've been a bit chatty lately. Any more pics Coreen? Like I said, I'm not sure I can post pics from this laptop. Jan may not have any right now.

And Jan, how well I did teaching didn't happen by accident. I worked at it. That's why I'm a single girl with few friends. When I had something to teach, especially when it was something new, I got at least a half dozen books on the subject, surrounded myself with them, scoured them for the very best explanation for what I had to teach. By the time I finished, I could do it in my sleep.

After I left the U for those 8 years, I only taught part time. When I decided to go back full time so I could finish my NP, the rest of the faculty was mad at me for leaving. Heck, I needed more money. They all had husbands that made money. They didn't even need their salaries. I took a big drop in pay to go back.

Because they were mad, I got stuck with all the lectures no one else wanted to do. They gave them to me right before the Christmas holidays and I cried when I got home. I was so excited that I finally was going to have a decent holiday and they robbed that from me.

My specialty was endocrine, cardiac and respiratory and they gave me the immune/inflammatory system, neuro and gastroentestinal. I spent hours, days/weeks working on those lectures. It's work to prepare a new lecture. You know.

To top off that I got stuck with all those new lectures, I had a little mishap with one. Just as I was closing in on finishing my preparation, my knee hit the off button on my desk top computer. All gone. It was all gone. I threw the biggest hissy fit you might have ever seen. Nothing I could do but start over. I only took me about half as long.

Carol said...

And guys, most teachers are like that. We work evenings and weekends and those holidays we get. And some people don't think we deserve that crappy ass salary that we get!

Carol said...

To have the priviledge of teaching, I worked so many moonlighting jobs that I lost count. That was the only way to survive financially without a husband. I did have some roommates along the way but they were poorer than I was so I didn't ask them for much. Many of them were going to school. I was happy if I could get half the electric bill.

But as a bonus, those moonlighting jobs were in nursing and they did provide me with some really interesting material for my lectures. Always a silver lining..playbook.

RebelliousRenee said...

sneaking in for a few minutes...

Carol... we have lots of friends... who are/who were teachers. You are so right.... they work their butts off and get lousy pay. I have nothing but praise for teachers. Any one I've ever known that criticized teachers either .... a: didn't know any... or b: was a lousy student. Teachers rock!

Carol said...

I really like you Renee. LOL

Hope you have a wonderful holiday. I'll be thinking of you in that hot tub. Get in there early one morning and play that Morning has broken song. That would give me a big "O". Do you have some scenary to look at when you're in the hot tub?

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol... I really like you too.... and Jan and Coreen.

Yes... you can see the ski mountain. Rick gave me a digital camera for Xmas year before last. I've never used it. I've already packed it. I'll take pictures and figure out how to upload them here when I get back home.
