Memorial Day...A ride along Wooster Street

This is the entrance to Wooster Street in New Haven, CT...a little street with lots of Italian restaurants along the way...

Libby's Italian Pastry Shop has some of the best Canoli's...Had to try a few...pistachio, strawberry & of course chocolate...

Wooster Street in downtown New Haven is the place to go when you want Italian food...It's been there
for as long as I can remember...& it does have lots of good restaurants...

We stopped there last month when I was in New Haven & picked up canolis at Libby's...delicious as you can see....

And while there is always a long standing argument about who makes the best pizza...Pepe's is always in the running for the best...

jan said...

Great pictures Coreen. The canolis look delicious.

Great pics Coreen. Makes me hungry for some Italian food. Describe those canolis to me. I don't think I've ever had one. They look yummy.

Sis and I found this good Italian restaurant in Houston. That was the last Italian I had besides an occasional pizza. For pizza..I get the pepperoni ones that are in the deli section at WM and doctor them up with other stuff I like..ie extra pizza sauce..green olives..and some jalapenos.

It's time I make some homemade marinara sauce..with some of TW's mators. I don't really need any meat in it. TW made some with her tomatoes and it was great.

If I was retired...I'd make my own pasta. I do have a pasta maker. That would be special.

I used to make something I found a recipe for called Rancher's fettucini. Just remembered that dish and I think I'll make it this week. I found the recipe on some dried tomatoes. It's just EVOO..lots of chopped garlic..diced up dried tomatoes..and sliced black olives. Saute the garlic in the EVOO. Then add the diced up dried tomatoes and sliced black olives in a fry pan..then add the fettucini. Mix it up good. Add crumpled feta on top when served. It's simple but yummy. Easy to make Jan. Serve with you fav salad.

Dehydrated tomatoes. That's something else I can do with TW's tomatoes. Dehydrated tomatoes are quite tasty..sweet. Good to put on some focaccia bread with other stuff. I have a good recipe for that also but it take hours. I bet I can find an easier one.

I didn't sit down today until close to 9p and then when I did..I'd think of something else I want to do and jump up again. I'll never run out of stuff to do.

I worked on the camp yard this morning. Mowed..weedwacked and blew off everything. 50 shade of hunk fixed up the things I needed on my boat. I started it and ran it. I need to take the boat out but I'm so busy working that I don't have time to play with my fun stuff.

But tomorrow TW is coming over. I'm grilling up some burgers and some other stuff. Got a watermellon chillin. We're gonna do that pool I've worked so hard on. Probably be too hot out there. The best time for the pool is before 10a or after 4p.

Carol said...

Did anyone see 60 minutes last night? I recorded it and then TW said she hoped I had recorded it. I did. That show last night will hit you in the gut. It was about some of the hero warriors who returned from the wars. War is hell. Isn't it interesting that you never see a warrior return and want to talk about the experience. If you want any info..you might be able to drag some out of some of them. You'd think some of these macho dudes would want to brag about what they did..but noooo. That pretty much indicates what a nightmare it was/is.

Isn't it awful that a lot of the horror of what these young men and women went/go thru was designed by and planned by some fat ass lazy..good for nothing idiot..not in harm's way..sitting behind a desk.. And much of it may be for the money. That is what chaps my ass. I do hope they get their karma.

I frequently get vets in the joint and I think..I just bet that it was the war experience that could have contributed to their being in jail. I thank them all for their service. I also wonder why the VA isn't there to provide a helping hand. I've had guys who needed the resources of the VA and wanted to try to utilize them. A while back..Flatus told me they wouldn't do crap. I looked into it and they won't do crap. They drop them like a hot rock when they are incarcerated.

This is our country and if we are going to continue to have these awful wars..we need to treat our veterans like they should be treated...like heros..everyone. Spare no expense. Instead..we often treat them like they are disposable.

Carol said...

I remember when WE started that Iraq war. I watched as much of it as I could stomach..which was way more than I could stomach. I almost had my coffee table turned on it's side so I could hide behind it. I was scared of those weapons of mass destruction..that I pretty much figured they must have since we originally provided them. Many of those we fought in war.. past and present.. we're monster's we created.

Bush was watching some sports. I remember Ari..his press secretary.. saying on the news that Bush didn't really watch much of the war news. He watched sports. Bastard. I was thinking at the time..I wouldn't mention that on TV. They weren't even ashamed of it.

Coreen said...

Interesting you use the word heroes
Carol...as it should be used...in contrast to this condescending smarmy little punk & his cohorts over at msnbc
(which I don't watch, but has been reported in various outlets) who says he is uncomfortable calling fallen soldiers heroes...

This is a perfect example of why I more & more, every day, loath/despise the left & their idealogy...no wonder msnbc is simply the pits...
Useless tv show punk host
feels uncomfortable calling fallen soldiers heroes

Coreen said...

And in case you haven't checked
at TM, you mentioned Flatus, he reported that his wife Stinky died
this weekend...

Coreen said...

Canolis...what can I say...they are a hard crisp sweet cookie shell no idea what the ingredients are filled with creamy ricotta mix, flavored with pistachio, fruit citrus peel, choc. chips...

They use lots of flavors, but the original usually was with pistachio & citrus peel, but I like
the flavored ones....

You need to eat them fresh, since if you refrig them overnight, the shell gets soggy...no idea why, but never fails...

Coreen said...

And as far as the origins of Memorial Day...seems it depends on where you are from...
So where did Memorial Day begin

Went to see "Dark Shadows" Don't wasted your money. John liked it but I think it was stupid.

Well..yesterday was the most I've enjoyed the pool in years. It was one of those terminally sunny days. I prayed for some clouds Jan but nada. I love clouds. With the help of one of my old trusty umbrellas..a wind tunnel fan..and being wet from the pool.. it was pretty comfortable even in the peak of the heat. TW brought some mega sun block.

The temp on Iphone said 90..hah..the pool water was close to 90. My thermometer on my little pool house said close to 100.

TW and Twin came over. Perfect number. I cooked burgers and made some dip and grilled some poppers. Poppers are jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and topped with bacon. I cut my jalapenos in half..take out all the seeds. Mix my cream cheese with some of my own chives and parsley and garlic. Some people wrap with bacon but I don't find the bacon gets done enough and I don't like that much bacon. I cut a small piece of bacon and lay over the top. I cook them slow over the grill. They were a success.

TW brought fresh tomatoes and cucs. I want to dry some of those mators.

Carol said...

Well work is back to full force torment this weekend. I got calls all weekend. I thought that maybe my time off would have made a little change in that. I really doubt they were doing this to my replacement.

One call that really chapped me and I let the nurse know it.. was when I got a call about an inmate who's Bp was 140/100. This is an inmate who has refused all Bp meds..didn't want to be bothered but yesterday decided to let them check his Bp. It was not a great Bp but it's not critical and why should I be disturbed on my holiday to do something for someone who has refused all meds before. I told the nurse just that and to just stick the info on my desk and I'd deal with it today. Should I have to tell someone that?? Really.

Carol said...

Jan..you would have enjoyed the Marigold Hotel movie much better. Was it playing at the same theater? On Rotten Tomatoes..critics gave it 75% like and audience 84% like. Dark Shadows was 40 and 54 respectively.

jan said...

Carol, your day with TW and twin sounds great. so good you are enjoying hour pool, yard and house.

#2 son and family had us over for a belated mother's day brunch yesterday. Enjoyable. Took some pics and posted some on FB.

Went to movie after brunch. Just not my kind of movie, but John enjoyed it.

Our 20th anniversary is today. Hard to believe we have been married this long. We are going to Macaroni Grill for dinner. Our trip next week is our anniversary gift to each other. Wrightsville beach, very close to Wilmington, ND., has been one of our favorite vacation spots. We leave next Tues am.

jan said...

#2 son and wife gave us a gift card for the movies. We tried to use it yesterday and they said we have to order our movie tickets on line with it. So, what if we were like many folks our age and were not computer literate. They are Fandango tickets.

jan said...

Carol, I agree, that 140/100 BP was not something they should have bothered you for. I would have been pissed too.

jan said...

Coreen, we both love italian food. There is a place here that makes good canolis. I had not tasted them before moving here. I bought some once at a bakery that were not fresh - yuk!.

jan said...

We have a couple of good Greek restaurants here. We like to go there too.

jan said...

Albuquerque is diverse in terms of population and food. You can find almost any ethnic restaurant here.

Georgia said...

Yes Carol, I enjoyed yesterday very much also, the peppers were just fantastic, and I had my "take home' burger for breakfast..!!!, I slept till almost 9 am this morning, guess all my swimming wore me out. Sad to admit, I am sore this morning, these old joints are used to so much activity. I need to do it more.

Georgia said...

Thanks Coreen for not reminding me about my Braves....LOL....Cannot believe they have dropped 8 straight, but the Cubs I think lost 12 straight before finally snapping it yesterday. I see your Yankees are on the west coast. And I'd like a sample from all those Italian places myself...

Georgia said...

And they had better shape up cause the Yankees are about to invade Atlanta again......

Carol said...

I'm concerned about this heat. I used to not be able to get in my pool until close to July. The pool water is now close to 90. That didn't happen until August.

I had a good chuckle the other day Jan. You had a typo on the state that your beach vacation is in. You had ND instead of NC. TW was wondering why you guys were going to a beach in North Dakota. I said..they might need to but no..it's in NC. I had to laugh. I was thinking that with this heat..you may need to go to a beach in Alaska.

Carol said...

"This is a perfect example of why I more & more, every day, loath/despise the left & their idealogy"

Coreen..I'm starting to loath them also but I loath the right and their ideology sooooo much more. It just seems that the left has moved so far right. I guess they saw all that the right got away with so instead of fighting them..they joined them. Now..they are all worthy of a good loath.

I tried to listen to one of those cable news shows the other day..couldn't stomach it.

Carol said...

Jan..there are so many things that bigger towns have to offer that smaller towns don't have..like really neat grocery stores. You may not really appreciate your grocery stores like I would. I told you that when I visited Seattle..going to the grocery stores was one of my fav tourist stops. And that Pike's Place Market was really special.

Pike's Place Market

Coreen said...

Jan, belated Happy Anniversary to you and John...

Enjoy your NC beach vacation...Not sure if you said are you flying or driving?....either way, hope you have the chance to get some shore pics...

Coreen said...

Carol, my contempt is not only for the left, the extreme right wing is just as lethal...the sad reality is that each side is orchestrating their 'agenda' & forcing it on the rest of the population who truly doesn't give a rat's ass about the nonsense that is spewed by each side 24/7...

My problem with the left is they claim to be the 'good guys'...they are not...they claim to champion women, in the end they don't...don't even try to justify this nonsensical war on women the dems have been pushing..the ultimate war on women was the dem. party's contempt for Hillary Clinton...starting with the
much revered Kennedy clan who couldn't wait to undercut her...for that alone I hold the dem party accountable & as anti-woman as can be...

Putting all the political nonsense aside, glad to hear that you are becoming immune to the tedius rhetoric on the cable news channels...now that you have a wide variety of tv channels to choose from, hopefully you can find other entertainment...

I have been watching the hatfield/mccoy mini-sereis on history channel...it is
pretty interesting...not really knowing much about that famous
feud, other than the stereotypical stuff about 2 hillbilly families killing each other..the last 2 hrs are on tonite...
Kevin Costner is the Hatfield patriarch...

am sure it will be re-run, you guys should try to catch it...as
southerners you all may enjoy it...
you do know that us yankees have never fully understood or accepted southern views...or the reverence to the remnants of the civil war...

Coreen said...

And TW I tend not to pay attention to the status of other teams, nor feel the need to mention the misfortune of other teams...the tide can turn quickly...

And until the all star game I try to just take any losses in stride...but make no mistake, I want my team to win all the time...& am never content when they lose, like the last 2 nites...end of story....

Georgia said...

I just like sports and always have. I keep up with the stats , wins, losses, trades, etc. And you are so right the tide can turn quickly...the Braves just went from best to worst in 8 games. It's a long season.......

Georgia said...

Carol, I think the fact that your pool was covered with that dark green colored cover so tightly, it held the heat in as opposed to your other pool cover. I thought the water was just right temp wise. But it is summer awfully fast too. The heat index was 84 at7am they said on KPLC this am. The high is 92 today, plus the noon sun is directly over the pool too.

Georgia said...

Finally, Braves won one beat St. Louis 5-4 last night.....PHEW...!!!!

jan said...

Carol, usually I look over my posts to check for typos. That time (ND) I did not. Thanks for letting me know. LOL.

jan said...

Yes Carol, you look for the grocery stores - me, I like the restaurants. One gets a look at our fav things to do with that.

jan said...

We are flying. Just too long a drive from here to NC.

We are going to NC from 6/5 to 6/13 and to Virginia from 6/13 to 6/16. John's GD is graduating from HS.

jan said...

Renting a car and driving from NC to Virginia and then fly home from DC.

jan said...

I taped all 3 episodes of Hatfields/Mccoys and will watch some of it tonight.

Carol said...

Jan..I wasn't complaining about the typo..just thought it was cute. My fingers are all over the place on the keyboard and I don't care.

When I was going back from one laptop to the other..my fingers were always in the wrong place. One of the keyboards had the numbers on the right side and the other didn't so when I changed laptops and placed my hands down on the keyboard..I was usually typing... eigibpejha'r.

Carol said...

Not really interested in the Hatfields and McCoys. Don't care for any kind of those warring shows or movies.

I was looking at a map and it seems that where those people were from..was a tad closer to your neck of the woods Coreen than it was to mine. West Virginia seems to be north of the center of the US. Why do we get to claim it as part of the south?

I just don't think you can generalize to the north and the south anymore Coreen. You bitch about this class warfare shit but you seem to want to stimulate it. Make up your mind sister. And a lot of your attitudes are pretty consistent with the attitudes of many of the peeps down here.

Carol said...

I recorded one show last night..Dogs in the City. It took me all night to watch that one show. I would sit down for a minute and watch a little then pop up to do something else. I don't know how long I'll be able to keep up this pace. Going back to work added way too much to my workload. I have too many irons in the fire and am not ready to give up any of them just yet.

That dog show was a lot like the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan. And like that other show..the dog trainer demonstrates that the biggest problem with dogs...is their owners. I know I'm Maggie's biggest problem. I've always let my dogs rule the roost. I've never been good with discipline.

And what was also interesting...the people were scarier than the dogs were.

Carol said...

I've created many of my own workload nightmares. Take my potted plants...I have some here and some at the camp. With this heat and current lack of rain..I'm watering myself silly. I go to the camp every morning and evening to water. I come home for lunch here and water.

And I'm growing stuff I won't even eat much of. I'll be bringing most of it to work for them to enjoy the fruits of my labor. How dumb is that? But I have this strong need to work the soil and grow stuff. It's in my DNA. I can't even let that old bell pepper plant at the camp go. It's over a year old and full of these little bell peppers. The peppers won't even grow very large because that plant is a senior citizen. I am waiting for it to die a natural death.

Carol said...

And my kitchen last night looked like I had a restaurant going. I was cooking up a batch of Maggie food..my supper..some chicken to use for lunch meat this week..and drying some of TW's mators. I think I had most of everything that has heat on it was on.

But then..I've never been good at sitting around. There are other things I could be doing with that time..but I'd rather not. And when I'm going to procrastinate..it's best that I have a good excuse to do it.

Carol said...

Now that I have some dried tomatoes..I'm going to make some of that Rancher's pasta tonight.

Carol said...

Your vacation/anniversary celebration sounds like fun Jan. Bring your camera and put up some posts while you are there..if you would like. I would like to go with you.

Georgia said...

Carol, I picked 24 more last night, I think my total is nearing 125 now.....probably 50 or 60 more on the vines...sure do hope we get the rain they have been talking about for this evening. I'm tired of dragging the sprinkler around the yard. Funny, people bitch about cutting grass then we just water it so it will keep growing...go figure.....

jan said...

Carol, yes we each make our own poison (all your plants you have to water at both places). I do the same thing but with other chores.

watched the first Hatfields and Mccoys - I think I will delete the rest. I dreamed about the damned show. I don't need any more drama in my life than what I live in.

Georgia said...

That show "Dogs in the City" was pretty bad I thought also....

jan said...

I do enjoy America's got talent. That is a fun reality show.

Georgia said...

Hey Jan you and John have a safe trip...!!!!!

jan said...

Lots of drama going on at work now too. Does not directly involve me but does affect me.

Coreen said...

Not to worry Carol, in light of your comments about what viewing matter you enjoy, won't be getting
any suggestions...we are definitely not on the same page...the miniseries was interesting & portrayed events I had not really known much about but other than in passing references...it appears to have drawn an enormous viewing audience...

As for your map about the family feuders, not sure what your point is...both WV & Kent were conflicted border states at the time of the CW...with significant sympathies toward the confederacy in both....& it is simply a fact that the glorification of the confederacy, et al...is a product of southern culture...you rarely if ever see rebel flags, civil war commemorations etc. in the north/east...

As for class warfare, damn straight, I resent it...sick of those who don't pay, whining about those that do & saying nothing is enough..if that is the mantra of the dems & their minions, I want no
part of it & in the end, it will
self-destruct, since it is a phony
issue...since alll those that scream the loudest about 'fairness'
in the end will sell out for the
most $$$...

And FYI, everyone I know that has
accumulated any wealth earned it, worked damn hard at it...& they pay & pay...the disengenuous
rants of those that don't have a clue how to run a business, let alone make it successful, just run their mouth & produce zero...

you have repeatedly stated that you have little in common with your 'peeps' so what's the point...I have said that the vast majority of people view the extremes of both sides as just that extremes, with virtually nothing in common with them...

jan said...

Thanks Georgia. I will be taking the computer so I will check in with you guys.

Georgia said...

I love Howard Stern on that show

Georgia said...

Carol, I finished off the jalapeno poppers last night...those damn things were out of this world. You know me, I let nothing go to waste. I even finished off your $7 bag of popcorn from the movie Saturday.. That's another rip off in this country.....7 dollars for a bag of popcorn and 5 dollars for a coke..!!!!!

Georgia said...

How do teen-agers date these days? They must have rich parents. I remember when I was a child in Meridian, Miss. going to the show for 25 cents and a dill pickle 6 inches long was a nickle. The lowest I remember gas is 19 cents a gallon. I paid $3.30 a gal. the other day and felt like it was a bargain since it was 3.79 3 weeks ago.......

Coreen said...

Adding one more point to the south/north differences relating to the CW...that virtually all of the conflict took place in the southern states likely adds to the
historical significance southerners
place on it...

Similarly here in the NE & the tri-state in particular...there is likely more remembrances of the destruction of the World Trade Center than elsewhere...as there may be in PA & DC as well...

Georgia said...

Although as of this moment not announced, there is a verdict in the John Edwards trial about to shown /released on CNN. I'm curious to see if the jury was swayed by his "style" .....

Georgia said...

Yes Coreen, I was born in Mississippi and moved to Atlanta in the 5th grade so the south and our traditions is very much bred in me, but that doesn't lessen the impact that 9/11 had in my life.

Coreen said...

TW, I did not refer to the personal impact the events of September 11 had on any person, rather stated that for the most part memorializing those events is
more pronounced in this area, since it had closer ties to these
communities...just as the CW was to southerners...

your culture has been defined by those events, more so than other parts of the country & I suggest that may be as a result of the war being fought on your land, where your ancestors lived & died...my thoughts were a direct response to Carol's assertions about my comments regarding the south in relation to the miniseries about the hatfield/mccoy feuds...

In this area you will not find commemorations for Jefferson Davis,
the confederate flag flying & other
reminders of the CW...but the events of September 11 carry
a significant impact here, as evidenced by the memorials that have been created since 2001...

Have no idea how the events of September 11 are remembered in your area, but here are some of the
perpetual memories created...for the most part they are concentrated in the NE, where the impact was more direct, just as the CW was to the south...

September 11 memorials across america

Carol said...

So everyone you know who accumulated any wealth earned it??? Do you think everything we get and have in life we all earned?

I don't have a lot compared you many and I've worked harder than the average bear for some of what I have..but not everything I have I earned.

I was blessed to have a great mom and dad that provided me with a comfortable home growing up. They loved me. They worked hard. They encouraged me to go to school. Mom insisted I'd be a nurse. Some of what I will have..they earned. I was blessed! And I thank God for those blessings.

Every day I see so many who were not blessed the same. I see them as my teachers. I thank them for helping me realize just how blessed I am.

Carol said...

Well..we caught a rain yesterday. We really needed it. We had been pretty dry here. We musta had a good little blow here also because I had tree pieces all over the yard..and the pool. Pool guy was suppose to come Wednesday but didn't. Good thing because it would have been for naught.

I raked the pool first and then vacuumed it yesterday. That was the first time I've done that in a couple of years. Fortunately the rain cooled it down some.

I stepped outside this morning and it felt cool. It was in the low 70s but cooler than it had been. Interesting how we slowly adjust to the changing temps.

jan said...

Our temps getting hotter. supposed to be in 90's today. It was nice and cool this am. Got my walk in early.

Not working today. Doing some errands.

Carol, I have some questions regarding my across street neighbor. She is in her 80's and was in hosp few days ago for intestinal blockage. Did NG tube - no surgery. In hosp for about 5 days. She is home now and out watering her lawn. I talked with her. She has a crappy doc. Not giving her much info. She said she is diabetic on metformin. She has been losing wt for months and gone from 145 to 106 now. She does not have an appetite. Her doc did not tell her whether to keep taking metformin. They did scans and MRI based upon her descriptions but have not told her results yet. The only thing the doc told her was to eat anything she wants. What do you think?

jan said...

If anyone has a moth problem. Lavender and mint are good things to repel them. Found this on internet and it works.

jan said...

We sure need some rain. Wildfires in southern part of state. We are not affected yet except some haziness in sky from smoke.

Carol said...

Jan..I'm curious to find out how your talk with your neighbor went. I called Jan because I was so concerned about her neighbor.

Metformin is a great drug but it must be used cautiously in older people and only after renal function is evaluated. I would never give it to anyone with GI problems because it can also cause GI problems. It should only be taken with large meals to decrease GI problems.

The drug can cause death from lactic acidosis and I've seen a few of those..not any of my patients.

Carol said...

I was thinking Jan that sometimes jumping in when you see a situation like the one you have encountered doesn't always work out very well. Sometimes you think you're helping and it comes back to bite you in the ass.

You have seen what I sooo often see. ..just how little... many who prescribe drugs.. know about them. There is sooo much work involved in practicing medicine that it's often impossible to be an expert on all of it.

They came up with those pharmacy rules to try to help in that area. At first the pharmacist was supposed to educate each customer on their meds. Remember that? Then it was diluted down to the drug info being stapled to your bag of prescriptions. How many people actually read that crap??? Not many..and if you do..you'd be afraid to take the crap.

Look at those commercials on TV. They rush thru all the awful side effects when they are hyping a new drug but I hear them. I think....over my dead body would I take that shit. And some who do...end up that way. If you knew the statistics on how many people are hospitalized or killed from their prescriptions... It's scary I tell ya.

I have a wonderful relationship with my pharmacist at work. She works for the same hospital that employs me. All of the prescriptions I write are faxed to the outpatient pharmacy and I depend on her as backup protection and she knows that. I tell her how important she is all the time.

There's double checking on drug allergies...there's checking on drug interactions..there's checking on what meds need prior lab work and intermittent lab work thereafter. There's making sure a pregnancy test was done and was negative before something is prescribed to a female of childbearing years. There's just sooo much involved. My pharmacist is totally involved in all that.

Not all pharmacists have the ability to have that kind of relationship with the prescriber. Our's is special.

Years ago..when I was teaching..I decided as a learning experience for my students..I'd pick out a few charts from the rack at the hospital and just puruse each for medication errors. I did that and every chart I picked out..had one.
It scared me.

I just did a Google search and found this headline..

"Statistics prove prescription drugs are 16,400% more deadly than terrorists"

I'll dare to say that I will bet that every old person in this world has something deadly hanging out in their medicine chest. I had a friend who told me her grandmother could hardly keep her eyes open. I told her to go thru her medicine cabinet and call me. She did. She had three different prescriptions for three different doses of this potent antipsychotic Mellaril... that she was taking. Her doc kept reducing the dose and giving her a new prescription. She was taking all three!

jan said...

Hi Carol, I have not talked with my neighbor as yet. I plan to talk with her today. I usually wait until she is out watering her yard. She and her husband are very private people. But I do plan to visit with her about the metformin. I did tell her yesterday that she needs to write all her questions down before she sees her doc. I do want to check to see if she is eating too. I told her about Ensure too. I hope that is ok.

jan said...

What you are saying about presc meds, I am well aware of. I told my dad what you are saying above years ago and he would not take any meds either. I just told him very simply that every med was a chemical and caused good and bad effects in his body - he took everything I told him to heart and even when the doc presc meds for him he would not take them. He lived to be 90 and a big old stomach cancer got him. But he was fortunate that he never had high BP or cholesterol. Interestingly however he did have to have bypass surgery when he was 69. He loved and ate red meat. In his later years he seldom ate red meat but when he was married to his 2nd wife - she cooked him bacon often. He was 68 when they married and she died 13 years later. She was 9 years younger than him.

I kept thinking why didn't the 2 big daddys just go out and have themselves a duel. It would have saved a lot of lives. I got frustrated with the 2 wives. They probably could have and should have put a stop to it. Most of their sons died as a result of the dad's stupid quarrel. Men can be so stupid.

"I was thinking Jan that sometimes jumping in when you see a situation like the one you have encountered doesn't always work out very well. Sometimes you think you're helping and it comes back to bite you in the ass."

Carol, in reference to your statement above, I have been thinking about that and just plan to tell her that it is very important that she talk to her doc about the Metformin when she sees him in a couple of weeks. This is great info for me to know though.

We rented the movie "J. Edgar" and watched it last night or rather we watched part of it and dozed a little too. It was not the most interesting movie. Clint Eastwood directed it. It sort of dragged. But good history there. He was a strange little man. It gave the impression that he was a transvestite and gay.

He was a very intelligent man and valued loyalty above anything else. He had a huge ego too. Lived with his mother until she died. She actually was the love of his life.

John and I have a "Show" going on right in front of us. A dove is building a nest in the big tree next door to the left of where we are sitting. He has found a great spot for twigs in the yard of the house on our right. So He has been flying back and forth finding just the right twigs for his nest - or maybe its a her. He has made about 8 trips right in front of us. So much fun to watch, but now I have a "crik" in my neck. He just flew off somewhere else. Maybe he needs a break. He has been working very hard.

Carol said...

Jan..you could bring your neighbor some information about metformin. She may have already thrown out the pharmacy info she got. She really shouldn't be taking it if she isn't eating well. That's really important since it could really aggravate her condition.

Also ask her if she checks her blood sugar and tell her to check it.

Had a great day today. Besides doing chores..TW came over to swim. I made mom's tator salad which I love and won't make without others to help eat it. Also..I bought this seasoned beef filet at Sams a while back. It came in a two pack..each filet roast was about 9 inches long. TW and I split it..each taking one. I put mine on the grill today with some corn on the cob.

We didn't feel like eating much this afternoon since we were swimming but I gave half of the food to TW to take home. I ate all evening.

We put the Bee Gees on the little stereo I use outside and paid tribute to them since they just lost another member of their group. I grew up to their music.

After pondering it for a while Jan.. I thought that I'd much rather have a live neighbor that thinks I'm a busy body than a dead one.

Carol said...

And another ponder..if you're in your mid 80s and you have a crock for a doctor...is that in your destiny of how you're suppose to go??

Life's strange. I've seen people who were in the hospital parking lot and had cardiac arrest and died and then someone is out in the middle of the everglades..and has a cardiac arrest and one of the crabs just happens to know CPR and he survives. Life is weird like that.

Carol said...

Craig on TM has a post about a cultured delusion in which people start thinking their lives are being filmed like a reality TV show.

That's not a new concept. When we were in school studying abnormal psychology Jan.. it was called delusion of reference. Remember that?? The reality TV idea is a new manifestation of that delusion. And it might not be too off the mark to feel that way these days. With all the ways we can get filmed these days..it's probably true 9 times outta 10. There just might be a Youtube with you in it.

And what I'm noticing these days is that delusional people are becoming more of the rule rather than the exception.

I know that anyone reading this blog may think I'm a couple sandwiches short of a picnic at times. My writing about my insects with unusual intelligence might be one of those times. But rather than being nuts..I'm just a tad more perceptive than the average bear.

I swear to you though that our southern bugs, sorry Coreen, are pretty danged clever. It's deer fly season and if you step foot out into the grass those little monsters will go after ya and they sting when they bite.

I told you that I have this electronic bug zapper. It looks like a small tennis racket and it uses batteries. When bug hits it..it goes pow and that bug is fried. I don't get to hear many pows. I've started taking it with me when I walk Maggie in the grass. When I take it..those dang deer flies leave me alone. Now what explains that?? It's the same thing at the camp with those carpenter bees. I want to zap a dang bug and they out smart me.

I've been very disappointed in my Iphone camera. Lately the pics I take with it are foggy. I took some last weekend and they all came out with a foggy border. I tried to use the flash on it and the picture wouldn't even come out at all. I was sad about that. I thought that I got a bad Iphone.

Last night I took the Otter box case off to clean it and found that when the girl put it in that protective box..she forgot to take off this plastic film that protects the back of the Iphone. I then understood why my pics were messed up. It was covering the little camera lens. I took it off and everything works right now.

Yesterday TW brought some dry tanning oil to get herself a tan instead of using the sun block. I told her she was crazy. Besides risking skin cancer..we older people don't tan so well..we splotch. I guess she thinks that she takes so much Ibuprofen that she's protected. There was just that study reported that people who take aspirin or NSAIDs may have a lower risk of skin and other cancers.

Carol said...

They keep reporting all the good things that aspirin can do for ya and dang it..I'm allergic to the stuff.

I read in Guyton's physiology that prostiglandins can have different functions from one person to another. When I take any NSAIDs/ASA..I get these severe cramps in my low mid abdomen..like severe menstral cramps.

And Guyton's Physiology was one of my very favorite medical references. I used that reference for a many of my lectures.

Carol said...

Well..I finally zapped a few deer flies. When they landed on me to take a nip..I grabbed them and threw them into my zapper...pow! Not exactly how it's supposed to work.

Carol said...

Jan..very sorry about that wildfire in your state. It's awful. Good thing you are leaving town.

jan said...

Carol, enjoying reading your monologue. Bill and his wife came over for B'fast this morning. They have been out of town a lot lately. DIL's mama is really sick so DIL has been in Montana for 5 weeks. Bill went there for a week too. It was good to catch up with them. So I was busy yesterday eventing and this morning cleaning up the place. Cannot help it - my mother ruined me - whenever someone is coming over I have to clean the whole house. So have not been on FB much.

jan said...

I am thinking that if a person is old, the medical profession pretty much gives up on them. I still have not talked with my neighbor. I bet she comes out tomorrow morning to water. I will talk to her before we leave for Nc.

DIL was telling me about the care her mother got for her Cancer. Piss poor! It was so hard for them to find out anything. Her mom is on Hospice now and DIL said they are great.

jan said...

Son and DIL have gone and kitchen clean again. Trying to decide what I want to do for the rest of the day. Hmmm.

jan said...

Funny about your iphone, Carol.

jan said...

I remember old Guyton's Physiology. I still have a Grey's Anatomy. Don't know what happened to my Guyton's. Most of my books now are ped's and more about developmental stuff.

Carol said...

Rut rho Jan..your statement..."I am thinking that if a person is old, the medical profession pretty much gives up on them." made me think about something.

Most of the docs I know around here are Republicans. You know our demographic group is growing by leaps and bounds and we are often out of the workforce. No longer useful to them but we cost them money getting our "entitlements" and such. Maybe what you said IS part of the plan to eliminate us. Need to make sure we find a bleeding heart liberal doc.

I told ya that I fought with many docs all the time about diabetes management. They said..they..meaning the old folkes.. don't want to know how to manage their blood sugars..or that they wouldn't check their blood sugars.

I found just the opposite to be the rule most of the time. My old people were my most compliant group. My theory was that they knew life was getting short and they wanted to be as healthy as they could be for as long as possible. I was really shocked at some of the docs that said that. I lost a lot of respect for them.

Carol said...

Jan..I often wake up with a lot of pondering on my mind and I'm happy to be able to entertain you!

Did you hear about that new drug being researched to treat breast cancer? This morning there was something about two new drugs being tested to treat cancer. I bought stock in one of the companies. I had some money just sitting in a stock account. It needed something to do.

jan said...

I agree Carol that older people are more compliant with their health regimen. John is a good example. My neighbor across the street said her doc told her to do her BS 2X daily and she does it 4X daily. She is an intelligent woman and alert. Nothing wrong with her cognitive abilities. Her husband, on the other hand, has dementia and physically healthy. But they take care of each other.

jan said...

I did hear of a new CA drug- but don't know anything about it yet.

I don't buy stocks any longer but I do mutual funds - or the investments I have are in mutual funds. I got stung on the tech stocks in 1999.

Did you hear about the young mother who left her infant son on the top of her car in a car seat??? She took off and the baby flew off..in his car seat. She had been smoking dope. I set the DVR to tape Adelle tonight.

Something very authentic about that woman Adele. No gimmicks..no frills. I love her.

My granddaughter in law is having problems with their 2 1/2 year old. He is being aggessive and has banged his head in temper tantrums lately. He banged the back of his head so bad they took him to urgent care the other night. They do have a 5 month old. I am sure that is part of the problem but she says it began before he was born. I encouraged her to refer him for early intervention. Early intervention is a federally funded program mainly for low income families but they do take private insurance also. I think he probably needs some speech therapy to help him express his frustrations so he does not act them out.

Something for you to ponder Carol...and you too Jan,though not while on vacation...enjoy....

Query: Is this emerging view of
less health care that coincides with the looming implementation of obamacare (barring it being struck
down by SC)& the claims by some
that it will be used to winnow the population, that is restrict care to the elderly, since the higher life expectancy now is at odds with the calculations used to determine sufficient resources to support the aging population have
proved inadequate...

all in conjunction with increasing costs of health care while the providers payments are increasingly being scrutinized & cut by the health care insurers...this should be right up your alley Carol...
Let's (Not) get physicals

Coreen said...

And if that isn't enough...try this one...
The truth about Salt

Coreen said...

And finally if that isn't enough for you to think about...there is this...
Are we in the midst of a 6th mass extinction

Carol said...

A lot to ponder there Coreen and I've only half ass read the first two articles. I could write a dissertation on the first two.

As far as the annual physical goes...I haven't personally had anything close to that since I was a child. I did a few of them myself when I was working for DOC and it was a requirement for inmates over 50. And I also did them when I was learning how to do them in grad school.

I think a good interview to get a past medical history..any history of present illness and a good review of systems(asking about symptoms involving each system) is pretty useful in finding out what a medical practitioner needs to know and pay more attention to. That is not usually even done these days.

I agree with what they say about overuse of these screening tests. That leads to unnecessary procedures. A good way for the medical profession to find a way to kill ya and it's a way to entertain some of the elderly or hypochondriacs who are into that.

Here's a little example of overreaching. Let's say someone has back pain. First of all..who doesn't at some time or other. The standard of care doesn't even recommend any xrays or other tests unless something in the history warrents it..ie the person fell down the stairs or they have osteoporosis and fell down the stairs. Or if the pain is constantly sustained over a long period of time.

Certainly don't want to do a CT scan or MRI of the spine. You will find something if you do and then feel the need to do something that is unnecessary. We all have some pathology after living for a while..with normal wear and tear on our spines. Research has found that if you divide peeps into two groups..those with back pain and those without any. You do a CT scan on both groups. It's very likely that the group without pain has more pathology than the group who are in pain all the time. I'll bet that depression.. sedentary existence/sitting on our asses all the time is a better cause of that back pain.

Carol said...

As far as salt goes..it's very individual. Some people are more salt sensitive than others. Check your blood pressure after eating some really salty stuff to see if you are.

AA are far more salt sensitive than white people. Cutting salt in their diets makes a significant difference in blood pressure. If you eat a very low salt diet and then hit the salt hard..it will show. You will swell up like a blotted fish and the Bp goes up. Older people are more salt sensitive than younger people.

As far as exercise in the heat goes. I studied that in Guyton's Physiology when I taught fluid and electrolytes to nursing students. Very interesting. When we first are exposed to heat..we don't sweat as much and we lose more salt in that sweat. After we are acclimated to heat exposure..we sweat much more and lose less salt. Sweating is our body's AC system. We have to acquire the ability to sweat more by developing more sweat glands. That's why prim and proper people say they don't sweat. It's because they are never challenged by being exposed to a lot of heat.

jan said...

We are here! I love the humidity. We are in the Holiday Inn tonight and go to the hotel on the beach tomorrow for one week. Getting ready to go down to a manager's reception in the lobby. Feee food and drinks.

Back later with news.

Carol said...

And speaking of sweating..I've been exposed to a lot of heat lately..am acclimated and sweat profusely..even at the thought of heat.

I just came in from outside by the pool and the temp in the shade reads 100. The one the porch reads 92. Don't even think of walking barefooted on the cement pool deck..unless you want to practice a new dance move.

From this time of year on..there's no going outside for very long except before 10a or after 5p. Then..it's still a challenge. They may call Louisiana sportsman's paradise but you better find a indoor sport this time of year or wait until after a nice cooling thunderstorm. We do have more of those expected this week..thank God.

My pool water is already up to 92 and it doesn't usually get that hot until August. A good rain shower will help that also. It's been very dry here.

Carol said...

Great Jan. Can you put up some pics everyday? If you can..I'd love it. I do want to share your vacay.

Carol said...

And another factoid. You sweat much more with high humidity since the purpose of sweating is to cool you off. It's the evaporation of that sweat that cools you off. If the air is humid and already saturated with water..you can't cool off with evaporation so you continue to sweat.

Carol said...

Carol, want to tell you about my neighbor with DM. I went over yesterday evening to visit her. She is looking good. Her color is better than when I saw her a couple of days ago. I had recommended that she get some Ensure since she didn't have much of an appetite. She got some and said she is drinking some after meals and she said she feels better. She is having her husband drink some too. Did I tell you he has some dementia following a stroke last Nov. He did not say much while I was there. he did not remember me.

I told Mary (neighbor) that it was very important she tell her doc when she sees hin on 6/16 that ask her doc about the Metformin and also remind him that she has lost weight. I did find out about her wt loss. She was 135 about 1 1/2 yrs ago and when she went to hosp a couple of weeks ago she weighed 107 lbs. She does not know why she is losing wt. She thinks she was eating well before then. She said she began having diarrhea a few days before she went to hosp. She does not have diarrhea now. Just before she called for ambulance she said she doubled over with pain on her left side. Said she knew it was not append as she had that out years ago. She did tell me she had a quad bypass a few years ago and also had CA on her nose too and they did some skin grafting from her neck. I did not ask how long for each of these event.

jan said...

She was happy I came over to check on her. I think she might be lonely. Her husb is not much company. I will check on her when I get home.

Carol said...

Great Jan..about talking with your neighbor. You could tell her that you have a friend who was a diabetes educator that warned you of some dangers of Metformin. It's a great drug but only if used under the right circumstances. It might have been the cause of her problem to begin with. Give her the info and blame it on me. Stress the need to only take it with a good sized meal and avoid it when she has gastrointestinal problems.

Carol said...

Women..you are insignificant!

I heard Jill Biden on The View. She teaches at a community college in Virginia. She said that many of her students don't know that she is the wife of the Vice President. She excused them by saying many work and have families. That's scary and is no excuse in MJO. What does that say about college students?? They may not even know who the Vice President is.

jan said...

interesting info about Jill Biden. I suspect she and the college where she works have downplayed the fact she is VP's wife to keep down media coverage. Besides, the VP in this country has never been seen as a "bid deal." The media has never said much about her. They just recently started referring to her as Dr. Biden. During the election 4 years ago and after Obama and Biden took office, she was hardly mentioned and never as Dr. Biden - just as Jill Biden.

jan said...

Carol, I did tell my neighbor where I got my info about the metformin. I didn't blame it on you but told her you were a NP and diabetes educator (in LA) and that I had consulted with you about her care. I did tell her that she should only take the Met. when she had a good sized meal. She said she eats a good breakfast and then also has some of the ensure after and that is when she takes her metformin. She also said her diarrhea has stopped. She said she is also taking Janovia. I will look that up.

Carol said...

Jan..I'm ready for some beach pics. It will be fun to spend some time on the beach without having to get sand in my ass to do it. LOL. I got a title for your next post...Life's a Beach! Stole that one.

Carol said...

I'm hoping for some rain today. I might get a little break from this watering even though with potted plants..you can't depend on getting that rain in the pots. My plants are so full of foliage that it may not get into the pot. I'm watering myself silly.

I have lots of cucs and mators on my plants but it's not ripe yet but it's sucking the water. I water before I go to work..when I come home for lunch and as soon as I get home. An hour after I get home..the plants are bone dry again.

It's actually better to get too little rain than too much. I can always water but if it rains too much..the plants can rot and die.

The grape toms I found and planted this year are called Roma grapes.
They are bigger than a typical grape. I read about them last night on the net. I later planted one that is more typical of a grape. I planted that one later.

I was wondering why it was taking so long for my fruit to get big enough and ripen but I looked to see when I planted them. Thanks to this blog..I knew. It was only April 22..Earth Day. I was late planting this year..too much going on.

It gets so hot here that veggies can cook out there. They usually put out lots of veggies all at the same time then die from the heat exhaustion.

We are in our beach suite. Can see and hear the surf from here. I am having to charge my camera battery. Should have done that last night and forgot. Will get out in a bit and take my beach walk and some pics.

Carol said...

Did you catch a little rain yesterday morning Jan? I waited for that cooling rain here and it finally got here about 4p. I watched this thunderstorm cell move my way. Then it split and went around me. It was weird. It looked like I was in a rain shadow. Maggie had jumped off the couch to take cover.

I ended up with a nice 2/10 of an inch of rain. I was cool with that since we have the same chance, or better, for rain for the next 4 days. TW said she got an inch at her house. It's like that around here. It can he raining in the front yard and not in the back.

TW also got a good blow with her rain. I was hoping to avoid that because it just fills up my pool with leaves and limbs. When I was thinking about that..that cell split and went around me. I appreciate that.

Carol said...

Last night I made some marinara sauce for supper tonight. Can't wait to dig into that. I used TWs tomatoes, my bell peppers and basil. I have to go get my hair cut after work today so that will eliminate having to cook today except it is time to make up some Maggie food for the week.

Carol said...

Well..score one for the rich Republicans all over the country against the teachers, cops, nurses, firemen in one state.

Hey..the voters have spoken. They listen to Rush and his cronies at Fox News tell them how good it will be for them to screw themselves so that the rich can get so much richer and continue to use that money to finish off the rest of the middle class. You might wake up one day but it may be too late. I'm glad I'm old.

And some of the people who voted for Walker were from union families. Probably those who already got theirs years ago and now..when they are set and don't need the help..they want to screw those coming behind them. Kinda like that queen bee syndrome in women. Maybe we should call them queen mosquitoes..those who suck the blood out of others for their well being.

Carol said...

I have to find something positive out of it all. For one..I like the idea that the recall helped to relieve some of those rich Republicans around the country of some of their money. I guess it did stimulate the economy. That money had to be spent somewhere. And the Dems did take control of the senate there.

And if it discourages cops and firemen from making that career choice..people can hire a few Zimmermans. Just don't wear a hoodie.

Coreen said...

Other views on the Wis. recall....

Not sure the results in Wis. truly have any impact outside of that state, but interesting that you
think that the only reason that the voters rejected the recall
efforts was because they are essentially lemmings, who march only to the drum of your favorite villains...

while Walker may have
implemented what he believed was
needed to try to address the fiscal problems of the state in a
heavy handed manner, in the end, it appears those measures have been working in Wis...so is it likely that when the voters & taxpayers saw that the state's economy was improving & that they were keeping some of their dollars that they voted to support those measures?...Maybe they thought that is more in their self-interest...

And how does your theory of only because of the money spent that those dumb voters voted against their interest square with the voters in CA who by large margins
voted to alter the public union
pensions in those cities...

Oh & the silver lining that the recall gave the dems. control of the state's senate may be just a hollow victory, since that state's legislature is not in session, & likely will not be again until after the Nov. election...

Seems a lot of money was spent by both sides (though the media has not seen fit to mention the outside forces that funded the recall itself)...for what was not a real smart thing in the eyes of the Wis. electorate....

Georgia said...

Here Coreen...

Unions aren't to blame for Wisconsin's budget

But if the Republicans can destroy unions then they can cut a significant contributor to the Democratic party. That may be their biggest goal.

And I would like to propose some new avatars for the two political parties. For the Dems...a honey bee...very necessary to support future life. For the Republicans..the mosquito..a blood sucking pest that I can't find any use for.

Now there are some cross overs in both parties. A few Republicans are bees and too many Democratic politicians have become mosquitoes.
