Great to see you fishing again Carol.

Greta and it have been setting out jug line. It took 3 days to get lucky. We went to check our jug line thus after non and the jugs were gone. We found on across the river dancing around. The other missing jug was down the other way . That one had thebiggest catfish on it. Aq

Good to see you enjoying your river again Carol...

Go, Carol and Greta!

Thanks, Jan.

This is what retirement is all about. Finally!

Fishing is a great teacher. If you ever fished, you have learned that. It teaches patience, tolerance, ingenuity and how to surgically remove a treble hook in the woods and keep the body part it was in. What did you learn fishing?

RebelliousRenee said...

Carol… is that a catfish?
I used to love fishing when I was younger. Haven't done it since I've been weaving professionally. The 9-day fair I do in August takes up most of my summer.

Glad to see you having fun Carol. Patience is definitely a thing one learns from fishing. But the biggest lesson for me was to be careful of the hook. I hooked myself really good once… don't want to repeat it.

when you say your prayers today or tonight, please think of my nephew, Bruce Rogers, who is having surgery to repair a torn aneurism in his abdomen. He is a sweet, kind man with a wife, Angie, and 2 lovely teenage daughters. Thank you.

Yes Renee, that's a ble catfish. Best eating catfish. We tie a line with a hook and a line with a weight to the handle of an empty detergent ju. We toss them in a spot ,close to the bank and bait the hook with cut mullet that are good for nothing except catfish bait. The two jugs that had fish on them yesterday were quite a distance from where theyeere tossed in. The fish swam the jugs off . Today we had a time finding one of our jug lines. We were just about ready to give up looking when we notice the jug undr a tree with low hanging. Branches. We pulled it in and we hadanotyer catfish. Not as big as the one in the pic but with 3 fish now, we have enough to fry up a sizeable mess of catfish. The blue catfish in the river a quite tasty.

Renee, it's kinda like a combination of fishing and Easter egg hunting..trying to find the jugs in the river with all the trees, grass and Cyprus knees. I told Greta last night that we need to hook that mullet on a fishing rod and try fising for those cats the regular way. With the jugs we miss out on the excitement of reeling in a fighting fish. We had no luck with the rod and reels but that was before I found the right bait. We tried worms, chicken hearts, the bait they sell in the sporting good stores and nada. We caught a mullet in this fish trap and I thought it might make a good bait and it did.

Jan,
How is your nephew doing?
Those aneurisms seem to be so difficult to repair, and it's got to be really painful to have one in your abdomen. Were the doctors able to repair it, and is he OK now?

Please let us know how he, his family and you are doing.

RebelliousRenee said...

Jan…
my prayers are with you nephew. Hope everything turns out ok.

Carol…
It's funny…. I really don't like eating ocean fish. But give me some pan fried fresh water fish… especially catfish… and I'm in heaven.

People around here do something kinda similar for catfish. They take a long line with multiple hooks along it's length… put weights at the bottom. Throw the line out… put pole on a y cutoff branch that's stuck in the ground… then sit back in their portable camp chair and wait the line to start to jiggle.

keep on having fun...

Carol said...

That's called a trot line. . They scare me with so many hooks to get stuck on. Right now I'm going to stick with what is working. Catfish are good eating unless you get one that tastes muddy. Not fun to clean though I have to sin the m

My nephew's surgery was actually yesterday. They placed a graft on the aorta where the aneurism was. His wife says he is doing well and if his recovery continues to go well, he will go home in 3-4 days. Thanks for thoughts and prayers.

I don't know if an aneurism is painful. It is very dangerous and mortality is high.

jan said...

Carol, I am so happy that you are finally enjoying retirement and doing the things you enjoy.

Fell out of bed last night. I was sharing the bed with Maggie and she had 2/3 of the bed. The top was cranked up because I was playing on my computer. At 2:15 I hit the floor. Not a good way to wake up.

Carol said...

Thank you God for watching over Bruce and his family!

Unknown said...

So glad to hear your nephew is healing, and home with his family, Jan.

I don't know what kind of symptoms an aneurism causes either, but know they're deadly if not caught. Luckily, his doctors were able to diagnose and repair it.

(It does seem that people are having a lot of circulatory problems lately... I've been wondering if it isn't our diet... high fat, high sugar, high preservative's... yum. Been thinking a lot about changing my bad eating habits.)

Unknown said...

Carol, did you save your old mattress? Put one side of your bed against a wall and a mattress on the floor on the other side. No more broken bones!

(I had to keep a railing on Emma's bed until about a year ago... and kids don't break anything when they fall out (usually))

Glad you're sleeping that well, though.

Carol said...

Trying to gain weight, I have started a lot of bad eating habits.

Carol said...

I think my flea bombs worked. I haven't found any fleas on mr since I bombed.

Didn't catch any catfish yesterday. Greata couldn't break away from her chore so I had Randal, mt river rat nurse friend go with me to check the jug lines. I don't feel confident to take the boat out alone anymore. May one day.

jan said...

Thank you all for your prayers and kind words about my nephew. I think he is doing pretty well now. This aneurism was first diagnosed about 3 years ago and was repaired and then it tore again about 2 months ago. 2 months ago he was in the hospital for 2 weeks, most of that time on a respirator and his prognosis was not good at that time. He was going to Houston for the repair and then it was decided to do it in the hospital. He is only 42 years old.

jan said...

Carol, Hope you are ok after your fall out of bed. It is not easy to change our eating habits. I too get into bad eating habits and have to make myself start eating healthier. Good luck. When I lived in LA and we spent time together you ate healthy foods - lots of veggies and not much sugar - if I am remembering right - at least when you cooked for yourself.

jan said...

Chloe, My nephew is not in good health. He is obese and has high blood pressure. I am not sure what causes aneurisms either. It is a weak area in an artery where the area "balloons out" and it can rupture. This aneurism was on his aorta - the largest vessel in the body. I don't know what his symptoms were either. I know he first went to the hospital in the smaller town where they live and then they airlifted him to Tulsa. He was in critical condition on a respirator for about 10 days and then they slowly weaned him off the respirator. At one time they were going to airlift him to Houston for the surgery and then changed their mind about that. That is all I know.

The common word that jumped out at me this morning, between all three of our comments, was 'habit'.

I am reminded, struck by the undeniable knowledge, that our habits (though seemingly ignored by me) are one of the few things in our life that we have some control over.

It's not going to be easy, but I can't deny any longer that a feeling of powerlessness is a crutch. Now what I am going to do is think about it for a while longer, then I'm going to do something about it.

Unknown said...

... psyching up.

Unknown said...

Carol!
Do not EVER go out on that boat alone.

The buddy system is a procedure in which two people, the " buddies", operate together as a single unit so that they are able to monitor and help each other.

Unknown said...

... out and about.

jan said...

Chloe, yes "habits" are the word. I don't know if "powerlessness" is a crutch. I worked part-time in an alcohol and other drug treatment center when I was in grad school. It was an eye-opening experience. I attended lots of AA meetings with patients and the first step in AA is to admit one's powerlessness over the addiction. I think food addictions are just as hard to overcome as alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. We women have the most difficult time with food addictions because when we are stressed our bodies crave those foods that are not good for us. I struggle with this all the time.

As we have said before, we don't care about grammar here. For you grammar folks, I do realize that my sentence, "..habits are the word" is really bad.

It is too much trouble to go back and edit my comments before posting. Enough said.

I did go out in the boat alone lat year but not anymore.

I'm not as agile as it used to be. Not as brave either

We are going to fry fish tonight. I was craving one of those cakes with the whipped frosting. I needed an excuse so I realised that the treehouse is 9 years old this month. I bought a cake and had them writ Haapy birthday treehouse on it. Where's there a will there's an excuse.

Carol said...

It's supposed to rain all day today. Looks rainy but isn't raining yet.

Carol said...

I don't care for a real sweet frosting and the whipped frosting isn't sweet. It's a whipped cream frosting.

Carol… any excuse for a party… I LOVE it!
I prefer cakes without the sweet frosting also. My father-in-law's 87th birthday is this Sunday… Mother's Day. We are taking him to the local cafe for a Sunday brunch. He goes to the place frequently…. so the owner is making him a birthday cake. We asked for a banana cakes as banana is his favorite flavor. She's going to make a cream cheese frosting for it. We've requested it not be too sweet.

Enjoy your cake...

yeah… I have degree in English…. but proper grammar on a blog…. who cares. I tend to write on blogs the way I talk… if it's lazy grammar… oh well :)

We'll, we just finished eating our fried catfish and it was yummy. Greata and Karen cooked the fish with some steak fries and hush puppies. Now we are watching deliverance. Loved most of that movie didn't particularly want to canoe a white water river after watching it .

jan said...

Glad you guys cooked and ate your catfish. Dinner sounds great. Deliverance was a scary movie for me. Sounds like a good evening.
