These are pictures from our august trip to NC. All but the first were taken at Kanuga, the Episcopal Retreat Center just outside Hendersonville NC. The last 3 are pics of mushrooms. I took about 20 pics of different varieties I saw early one morning. The first pic is when we were leaving john's brothers house and their dog was watching us from the porch. Her name is Gracie and she is a sweetheart.
Good night. I am excited about seeing my sister tomorrow. Also looking forward to seeing little Riley, the dog. We will spend tomorrow afternoon and evening with my sis and then pick up Riley Sun morning and start home. I have appts on Tues morning.
Always love your pictures and the things you sure, Jan.
... as well as enjoying all the posts here. It's so nice not having to talk about politics if we don't want to.
I never felt the weight of all the disagreement in this country as much as I have the last few years. In that way, the internet has it's drawbacks. Sometimes it feels like a little 'too' much information for a person, such as me, that tries to filter out as much of the bad things that happen as possible
What a surprise. Thanks Jan. I love your pics. Did you try the prayer labyrinth? I'm not sure I could walk it and pray at the same time. Not too good at multitasking that involves changing directions anymore.
Hate to admit it Chloe but we are all a little judgmental. It is one of those human flaws that is almost impossible to eliminate. You can't really ponder without some judgement involved. Ponder that. I don't think we can even exist without using judgement.
And politics, as stressful as that subject is, is also somewhat impossible to avoid. It so much affects our lives. What can we talk about much that actually doesn't have some politics involved. At least we don't have to take a ship to a new land to settle because we can't deal with the politics of our old home..not yet. Or fight a civil war to change things..not yet. All we have to do is tolerate an occasional bruised ego because our opinions are different from others.
Chloe, one of the reasons that I think I wouldn't have made a good mom is because of the fear of all that could happen to a child. Even when I'm around other people's kids, I'm a nervous wreck. Jan was not a bit concerned and trying to talk to me but all I could do was fret over one of them getting injured. I guess I would have had to get over that if I had my own. I bet parents are worse with their first kid.
Coreen, you caught me on one of those rare occasions where I didnt have old iPhony on me. Don't need it for call anymore but do like to have for a medi-alert...the help, I've fallen....
I'm out at the camp. Did a little sheet rock work and now trying to work up the energy to start painting. I'd rather just stare at the river. The painting ain't so bad but cleaning up after is

Have a good day!
..... and Jan, if you're around, looking forward to hearing about your trip.
Coreen, I bet you are fit to be tied. Your team making you sweat like that. Don't they realize that that is hard on us old folks. I kept up with it on iphony. I saw where at one time they had the bases loaded and Jeter was up to bat and flied out.
It took them 14 innings to get the job done. Dang.
Jan, like the pics...missed gracie on the porch at first...like the mysterious mist on the lake...is that a cross in the distance...& guessing that is John walking the labyrinth...
I did finally get some painting done. I did some sheet rock mudding of holes. Then I painted several ceiling panels..with the second coat, the third if you count the primer coat. I did a few walls and I'm also painting my frig. One side is speckled with little rust spots. The frig is only 7 years old, not too old in frig years. The humidity here makes everything rust and three frog strangling rains into the kitchen area from the roof leak didn't help. I sanded it a little and then got some rustoleum appliance paint. It looks pretty good.
Somehow..I don't think I'll ever see the end of this painting. I still need to do the bathroom, the cabinets, and the bedrooms. Might as well do everything while I'm at it. If I was 10 years younger and still hyperthyroid...I'd have been done by now.
My vitamin must have kicked in because I did come home and cooked up some of what my mom called Cajun chow mien. Don't know why she called it that. It's ground meat, tomatoes, onions, garlic, bell peppers, mushrooms and rice, hopefully without too much arsenic in it. I'm starting to feel perky now. Maybe I needed some arsenic.
Carol, thanks for deleting my extra comments. It would not take the comment so I just kept hitting the "publish..." thingee below. Silly me!
Carol, you don't have to lower your head to pray or even pray on the labyrinth. When I walk it, I just focus on my breathing - like meditation - and try to clear my thoughts and just be "where I am" It is a great exercise for clearing the old brain and gaining Peace. I would love to have one close to us.
Carol, it is funny about painting. It is hard to stop. Once you paint something, you look around and by golly there is something else that looks like it could use a coat of paint.
Coreen, yes, that is a cross across the lake. It was foggy that morning of the picture.
Gracie has been very ill recently and her mom and dad have been anticipating her not being with them any longer. She is 14. So, I could not resist the picture and was taking it as much for them. I e-mailed them the pic.
I had a great visit with my sis today. She enjoys living with her daughter and family. This is her child she is the closest too. I think after her husband died last year she felt pretty lonely. She does have her own room and bath- and TV. She says when it all gets a little much for her, she just goes into her room. There are 2 girls, 5 and 16 years old. They are really sweet kids. She says she does miss having her own place.
I don't think I could do that. Of course I don't have a daughter.
We are meeting my sis in the morning and she is bringing Rylie (the dog's name). We will leave for Albuq then. Taking a different route tomorrow. It is a little more complex, but the scenery will be better, I think. I will try and take pics.
My niece's husband was showing me his i phone tonight. very cool. He said wait until the iphone 5 comes out to get one. I may just have to have one. it would make the navigation here much easier.
I heard something about the map app not being on the new iPhone Jan. That is one of the biggest complaints. Found a comment...
"The biggest complaint so far has been the Maps App, which is a new program developed by Apple and not the Google Maps used on the previous phones. There are bugs, no street view, limited traffic data and no transit data."
You might be better off getting one of the older models. Do some research first. The new one also seems pretty expensive. Also, some of the internet features of the droids are better. Some videos don't play on iphone. Also seems that they don't charge for some of the apps that you have to pay for on iPhone. The iPhone people are addicted to iPhone and just don't see some of it's drawbacks.
I thought that John had a droid smartphone. I was going to go for a droid smart phone when I had to replace my iPhone but the phone function gave me trouble. I was used to the iPhone..phone feature. The little time I had that droid..about an hour, I found things I liked better about it's internet applications.
Kinda worried about our La football teams this year. It's not like sports is a serious interest of mine like it is for my friend TW or like it is for Coreen with her BB.
LSU just barely beat Auburn tonight. They won their first two games but played some really easy teams. Tonight was the first decent challenge.
My Saints are 0-2. No coach. Remember we were the ones who were trying to rough up the players on the other teams. I didn't notice. It all looked the same from one team to the other to me.
Today is like a true fall day....sunny, blue sky, brisk breeze, topping out at 70...yesterday was gloomy, humid but didn't rain til night...
About those leaves...few weeks to go around Columbus day & the week after when they are best.. the local news saying it's going to be a good year for colorful fall leaves & pumpkins, but not so good for apples..which are just starting to be noticable at the apple orchard down the road...
We are in Lubbock tonight. Little dog (LD) traveled very well. She preferred to stay in her carrier. I sat in a back seat with her. A couple of times I took her out and held her.
We are in the motel now and LD got out and ate and drank some water and peed outside. She is back in her carrier. My sis says that is where she feels the safest.
How old is the little dog Jan? When I had Beau, he stayed in his kennel when I was not home. He felt safe there. Maggie often rests in her little tent now. She likes to be hiding somewhere almost all the time. She is a tad neurotic I'm afraid. She is the strangest dog I've ever had.
Yesterday TW invited me over to eat gumbo and watch the game. I thought I should continue to work on my painting. When I woke up this morning I pondered...if the world ends tomorrow which would I have rather done. It was no contest...visit with my friend, watch football and eat gumbo. Could have done without the football.
On my way to her house I had to stop and air up a low tire. There was this young guy airing his tire so I was waiting behind him. When he finished, he walked up to my truck and asked me which tire needed air. I told him and he started airing it up. The little air machine stopped before my tire was aired so I handed him my 4 quarters to finish. He wouldnt take them. He put in his own money to continue filling up the tire. He said "this is on me". I was moved by that act of kindness. Just a young guy in a beat up little truck. Made my day.
Jan, I just put in Lubbock and Albuquerque in my map it on iPhone and it said it will take you 5hr and 42 minutes to get home..with traffic...give or take.
My map app that came on iPhone doesn't talk. I did have a GPS on my phone that did talk but I had to pay 10 bucks a month to ATT for it. I figured it would be cheaper to get a GPS. Twin borrowed it and never gave it back. Good thing I don't go anywhere. Do you have a GPS for your car?
"Downplaying the need for the government to ensure that every person has health insurance, Mitt Romney on Sunday suggested that emergency room care suffices as a substitute for the uninsured."
Well, that sure demonstrates his ignorance about health care and ER care. The philosophy of the ER is treat them and street them. It's an expensive and totally inappropriate place to receive anything other than emergency care. In the long run we all have to pay for that expensive care and then pay and pay and pay because it doesn't provide anything to treat the problem after the initial emergency.
Maybe he and others of his kind think that these people will die and leave us alone but they don't die, they linger and cost much much more. They seem to want to deal with problems by kicking the can down the road..actually more like kick the snowball down the mountain where it turns into a gigantic avalanche.
Actually, he does know better but maybe he just forgot.
It just seems like Romney and his kind think the answer to everything is kick the snowball down the mountain...they just make sure they are on top of the mountain and the rest of us are down at the bottom.
Woke up with some crazy thoughts this morning. I'm entitled..I'm retired and can't do anyone too much harm anymore.
Ya know Mittens and Ann really want this president gig. Seems I heard or read that they'd be happy with just 4 years. Pack the pup in his top of the car roof carrier and head to the big house. We don't really know what he'd do if he got the job. He was kinda a liberal governor. We just never know what's really in the head of these guys. We certainly can't count on what they tell us before they get the job. If he would be happy with just 4 years, he could say screw them all..I'm gonna fix this place.
Obama certainly didn't turn out like most of us expected. Was that his fault? He had to give into the powers that be. When they need money to run again and the ones giving the big bucks expect something in return..how can they do much good. Now..he doesn't need the money again because he can't run again so this time that hope and change may actually turn up.
The problem is that we really don't know! Unless someone out there is psychic, we don't know what we can expect. It's a crap shoot.
But we do know that if one tells the truth..that the government is bought and paid for..that this free trade ain't working..etc, they don't even get a chance to talk to the American people. They get to be the chairman of The Reform Project.
What happens to some of these people who did make sense? This morning I Googled Dylan Ratigan. Remember..he was one of my favs. He left MSNBC. There's nada about him since he left. He seems to have disappeared. Nothing recent on Facebook. What happened to him?? Maybe someone paid him to shut up and disappear. Hope that he did get something before he disappeared.
Being my own boss here, I can take frequent breaks. All the whitish paint makes my eyes go nuts I have this blackish thing I see in my new eye. Not there if I just look ahead but when I look around it darts with my eye. Thought it was a roach last night which wouldn't be an unusual find in my neck of the woods. Not sure if I wouldn't have rathered or be a roach because I could kill it.
On this break I'm watching a little Racheal Ray. She mentioned that she did a show on all the things you can do with a waffle iron. I think she invented them. I'll have to find that info on her website. Today she came up with things you can make with a mini muffin tin. Yep, I have one. She made mini spinach artichoke bites. That sounds like a winner but I'd use a few different ingredients.
I have another appt with m eye doc tomorrow. I'll ask him if this roach is permenant. Since doing my rt eye, my left eye went bad overnight. I think he knew that would happen. My left eye was just trying to hang in until I got at least one good eye. The same fog I had in the rt eye now moved to the left. Its more disturbing when I'm outside. Jan, did you notice a drop in acuity in the other eye when you got your rt one fixed?
What's weird is that when I went to see the doc, the day after surgery, when I couldn't focus on anything with my new eye, the acuity in my left eye was better than it was before. Now it's crap. The human body is a mystery.
We are home. Yeayyy! Carol, you are right on target. It took about 6 hours. There were some 2 lane roads when we got into NM and traffic. Plus, we stopped about 3 times.
Ryley did great. She was more relaxed today. She didn't pant at all on today's trip. She did pant quite a bit 1st day.
I took her out back and she pooped. I gave her some water and she went back in the carrier. I have the door of the carrier propped open so she can come in and out.
This morning in the motel, she finally came out for longer periods of time and actually followed me around. Of course, now she is in a new place so we are back at square 3 - at least it is not square 1.
Ryley is 5 or 6 years, my sis thinks. She has all her papers packed. She is going to get me the tele # of her vet in Tulsa and I will call and get all her records faxed here to our vet.
Carol, when I had my cat surgery on my right eye, my left eye did not seem worse. It is worse now than then however - about 3 years ago. But eye doc says not bad enough for surgery.
Carol, sounds like you may have what is called floaters...specks that seem to dart across your vision..,have experienced them, off & on...hate to mention it, but it is associated with the aging process...usually they are harmless though annoying...good to check with your eye doctor though, especially since you have an appt... eye floaters
Hi Coreen, Ryley did come out of the carrier a short while ago and I got several pictures. She also went to the bathroom outside. She is peeing and pooping outside very well and eating and drinking too. She did explore the liv room and kitchen and rolled around in her little bed my sis sent with us and then she went back into the carrier. Too funny.
We have come home to a real shock. Our dentist died a week ago. The obituary was in the paper yesterday. He was only 60. He had a massive heart attack. He was a healthy looking man and was thin - not at all fat. I called his office this afternoon to see what happened. 2 weeks ago he had been to get his hair cut and came back to the office and was having chest pain, so the office staff called for Emer services. He went to the hosp and they put in a stent or stents and he was doing well. He went home after a coupe of days and had another massive heart attack and died about a week after the stent was put in. Makes me wonder if they should have done a bypass surgery.
My son, Bill and his wife and sons had been going to him for about 20 years and John and I went to him since we moved here 9 years ago. We are all heart broken. He was a wonderful man. He was the best and gentlest dentist I have ever had. I have always hated going to the dentist, but it was almost pleasant to go see him.
This isn't a floater. I do have floaters, they float around. This is something over to the right. It only moves if I try to follow it. It's usually when my right eye is moving that I catch it over to the right. I try to look at it and it moves the same way I move my eye. It's either something on my artificial lens or maybe a stitch. Hopefully it will go away with time.
This is the first season I've watched the Voice. I really like all the coaches. They're fun. I didn't know how the competition worked and since I think you have watched it before Jan, I asked but you wouldn't tell me or missed my question. I finally did look it up on the program website. I'm recording DWTS. I can ff through it later to see if it looks interesting.
Now..how would I make them even better...I'd add some feta cheese. If you have spinach and artichoke..I think it would call for a little feta. But then I love feta. I'd cut back on some of the Parmigiano-Reggiano but I like it also.
I will have to wait until I have company. It's a little much for a party of one.
sorry you guys. I did not get any pics of scenery on way home. We stayed in Lubbock. Lubbock looks like Amarillo - Flat and dry. Not much to see there. We went through the Texas Hill Country so fast - no time for pics. John was on a mission - get home.
We saw a pretty funny movie on HBO in motel - with Eddie Murphy - titled "1000 Words" I don't care a lot for Eddie Murphy but it was a pretty good movie. funny and a good message too.
Ryley is in her carrier sound asleep. She did come out and followed me around tonight. We left her in the house for a couple of hours while we went out to see DIL tonight. We left the door of the carrier propped open and she was out of it when we came home. She is doing good.
I'm ff through DWTS. I see that the judges are scoring with their gonads again. They all seemed to hit on Gilles and I can see why. He has the sexiest face. Wow. I didn't really notice his dancing that much but didn't think it was sooo much better than some of the preceding dancers even though his scores were. Haven't seen Bristol dance yet but her face looks different. Did she has some work done on it??
I do like the Voice because I enjoy watching the coaches interact. I like them better than any of the other singing program judges. This is my first time with that show.
I'm so happy that little Ryley is adjusting. She knows she has a good home with you guys. How does John feel about her? She's probably more of a ladies dog than a man's dog.
I confess that I like Giles too. He is a beautiful dancer too.
Just watched Bristol Palin. She has improved but she is so far behind all the other all stars - she may be first to go unless her mom's fans keep her on. Carry Ann said she is the MOST improved - but the bar was pretty low.
I wasn't watching DWTS back when Emmitt won. I always wondered how a big galute like him could dance. I figured they probably didn't have much competition back then. Then I saw him dance. I said...damn...he can dance.
Emmet CAN dance and he has so much personality. I bet he will win again. I too did not watch DWTS when he danced before. I think Bristol was the worst dancer. She has no flair when she dances and the choreography was lacking too.
I think it will be between Pam and Bristol. One of them will go tomorrow night.
the guys on DWTS...apollo, drew, gilles, emmet, missed the race driver...all good...my girl fav is kelly monaco & shawn johnson....
pam & bristol should go & soon...
gilles foxtrot was the best of the night...don't remember him from before but I do know his 'acting credits' include his nude shower scene on a porch in sex & the city movie that drove samantha crazy...
I'm in the waiting room at the eye clinic. I see there was a controversial call in the Seahawks game last night. There were at least 5 bad call/call reversals in our game Sunday. No one bitched because we're so bad it doesn't matter.
The eye doc did say I do have that PCO. I said oh great..I was one of the lucky 20 percent. He said the incidence is much higher than that. Maybe for him. I think that is what is causing my visual distortion. He didn't seem concerned. I guess we will wait to see if it gets better or worse.
Now I'm having trouble with some of the letters on this laptop. I wonder what's going on. It's weird that two different laptops would have problems with their keys. I'm waiting to get the new keyboard I ordered. I hope it's easy to install and then I'll order one for this one. It's the U and the J. They both started working again but I'm not sure for how long or what's causing the problem. These are both Toshiba laptops.
Well Pam came in last yesterday. I hope she is the first to go. I pulled up that Pur DWTS website that I follow when the program is back on. That's when I realized I had lost my U. I couldn't even put the name of the site in my search. I took both of those keys off and cleaned..nada. Now they are back but not working well. I'm really beginning to think that these laptops are programmed to go bad after so many hours of use. And I do use it often.
Ryley is doing good Carol. She is eating, drinking, sleeping, peeing and pooping. She has her own little personality. We went out to PetSmart this evening and bought her some new food. We are giving her dry food, that is meant for toy dogs. We have done some research and dry food is recommended over wet food mainly because of their teeth. I like dry food because it is more convenient. We bought her a harness and little leash. Also new little stainless steel bowls. Bought her a little squekie toy. We also signed up for training classes. They will be on Friday evenings for 6 weeks. I think we are good for now.
Ryley has become attached to me, but pays no attn to John so I think the training (which we will both attend) will be good for all of us.
She's just a lady's dog Jan. She could probably be a man's dog if she started out with one particular man. She might also sense that John's more into a bigger dog. I'm sure they'll warm up to each other especially when he spends time with her when you're not home.

Chloe, you have a big place. Is it hard to keep all that up?

Oh Great! I have been having trouble with computer. Carol. can you delete those extras. So sorry!
"you have a big place. Is it hard to keep all that up?"
Jan, we're never caught up.
Of course, my whole life feels like that.
Always love your pictures and the things you sure, Jan.

... 'sure' in that first line should have been 'share', Jan.
It's so good to be able to come here and to discuss the little, everyday things -- the things in our daily life are that are most important.
There's a personal-ness her that is so uncommon, and I rarely feel judged.
What a surprise. Thanks Jan. I love your pics. Did you try the prayer labyrinth? I'm not sure I could walk it and pray at the same time. Not too good at multitasking that involves changing directions anymore.

I'm out at the camp. Did a little sheet rock work and now trying to work up the energy to start painting. I'd rather just stare at the river. The painting ain't so bad but cleaning up after is
I just found the box my Centrum Silver vitamins were in. I was telling TW that I thought maybe it was allergies zapping my energy. She also heard a doc on tv saying this year was horrible, with seniors being especially vulnerable.
It could also be that looking at all this work that I need to do is zapping my energy. Is there a remedy for that? Yeah...do the damn work.
My camp insurance co is trying to screw me. Its called
Southern Fidelity out of Florida. I pay way more for it for less total coverage. They measured my bathroom about 30 less square ft than it is. They are trying to screw me out of my food loss. The contract adjuster first forgot to list it. Then he said if I was the only one who lost power, it wouldn't be covered. Everyone out here lost power. Now the guy at the insurance co says if everyone lost power, it

Yes, I'm procrastinating. So!
Waiting for that vitamin to kick in.

Oh, and regarding your allergies, Carol. I have no doubt that my allergies are zapping my energy. They resemble a cold in many ways.
Dang.
For sure Carol...but they did get the job done, finally...lots of yelling, phone ringing when it was over...
Jan, like the pics...missed gracie on the porch at first...like the mysterious mist on the lake...is that a cross in the distance...& guessing that is John walking the labyrinth...
a meditation labyrinth...interesting idea...

That is John on the Labyrinth.
Carol, it is funny about painting. It is hard to stop. Once you paint something, you look around and by golly there is something else that looks like it could use a coat of paint.
Your cajun chow mein sounds delish.
Shame on us for failing to mention the autumn equinox yesterday Happy Autumn everyone. How are the leaves up your way Coreen?
Jan, we're waiting to meet your new fur baby.
Today is like a true fall day....sunny, blue sky, brisk breeze, topping out at 70...yesterday was gloomy, humid but didn't rain til night...
About those leaves...few weeks to go around Columbus day & the week after when they are best.. the local news saying it's going to be a good year for colorful fall leaves & pumpkins, but not so good for apples..which are just starting to
be noticable at the apple orchard down the road...
We on our way to a 0-3 with the Saints. The game has been a fiasco.
I'm sorry but I'm a fair weather football fan.
I think Drew jinxed the team when he held out for all that money.
Actually, he does know better but maybe he just forgot.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/23/mitt-romney-60-minutes-health-care_n_1908129.html
This is what you wake up thinking
about?!...
You are retired you are supposed to be relaxing...
Maybe we could channel the Long Island Medium!...she's a trip...gotta love her...
Ratigan? after all his rantings...try witness protection...
They say sugar is bad for us but I'm taking a work break and watching my hummers suck it down. It seems to fuel them pretty dang well.
Coreen, put your feelers out and see if you can find out anything about my Dylan. Check with the Long Island medium.
Yep, I do wake up thinking about crazy stuff. It's an illness.
Carol, sounds like you may have what is called floaters...specks that seem to dart across your vision..,have experienced them, off & on...hate to mention it, but it is associated with the aging process...usually they are harmless
though annoying...good to check with your eye doctor though, especially since you have an appt...
eye floaters
Jan, I would not be a bit surprised if Ryley comes out of his
carrier & becomes your tiny lapdog
sooner than ever...
I meant sooner than later...
Too funny.
Carol, I had some floaters after my surgery too. They went away in a few days.
Sorry about your dentist Jan. When our number is up..it's up. You can be in the ER and die or out in the Everglades and survive.
Happy that lil Riley is settling in. Can't wait to see your pics. Put them up soon..don't have to wait.
Hopefully when you see your doctor
he will be able to diagnose what it is...
And not sure if you are interested
anymore, but didn't even know that tonite is the new DWTS...
I'll record DWTS but not sure if I'm interested in past performers. I like it when they have new people. I've been watching The Voice.
Here is that recipe for mini muffin spinach artichoke bites I saw on the Rachael Ray show today.
Mini Muffin Spinach & Artichoke Bites
Now..how would I make them even better...I'd add some feta cheese. If you have spinach and artichoke..I think it would call for a little feta. But then I love feta. I'd cut back on some of the Parmigiano-Reggiano but I like it also.
I will have to wait until I have company. It's a little much for a party of one.
Carol, I think I missed your question about The Voice. I did watch a little of it a year or so ago. I guess I was not that excited about it.
we are watching DWTS. recorded it earlier.
I am looking forward to Modern Family. They won Emmy last night for best comedy.
We have been watching X factor - and not impressed.
sorry you guys.
John likes Ryley but he said it will be hard to bond with her like he bonded with Lobie. I reminded him that there will never be another Lobie.
You are right Carol, she may not be a guy's dog.
I think I read somewhere that Bristol had some cosmetic surgery.
Gilles has an advantage. He has those long legs - easier to do the foxtrot and waltz. He is smooth too.
Did Kirstie pork back up again?
So far, Anderson was the worst.
I think this will be a fun season.
the guys on DWTS...apollo, drew, gilles, emmet, missed the race driver...all good...my girl fav is kelly monaco & shawn johnson....
pam & bristol should go & soon...
gilles foxtrot was the best of the night...don't remember him from before but I do know his 'acting
credits' include his nude shower scene on a porch in sex & the city movie that drove samantha crazy...
Don't care for that Joey guy's personality. He's kinda crude.
How's little Ryley Jan?
We are watching DWTS. It is an hour later here. Emmet Smith just danced. Gotta love that guy. He is good and he has fun.
Anyone want to wager on which body part Max pulls first trying to drag or throw Kirstie around? Wasn't she smaller when she finished her last DWTS?
