Bad times in summer

An invited guest blew through Friday night leaving damage to both of my places and no power for 42 hours. I don't like summer!

Coreen..it wasn't a branch that came down, it was half of a huge pine tree. It was twisted off half way up. It had to be a tornado that hit here.

I spent the day running down my insurance claims people. I met a guy out at the camp who will be doing my work there. I had him put up a blue roof to keep any more water out.

I talked to the rep from my camp insurance, Southern Fidelity insurance, on the phone and he didn't impress me. Sounds like he will try to screw me out of anything he can. I do have an adjuster for that insurance coming Wednesday morning. I haven't even heard from the adjuster from Allstate. They said they will contact me within 72 hours. I did notify them yesterday.

I pay much more for my camp insurance, with less coverage than I do my house. I also have flood insurance out there so it costs twice what my house costs for insurance.

I had only 4 inches of rain pour through my camp ceiling. The plaster from the ceiling has dripped on the floor. The floor is one of those floating wood looking floors and its squishy. The planks are warped. The guy who will be working on the camp said he wouldn't know the extent of the damage until he rips into it.

The water on the floor has leaked thru and is dry on the surface but there is a pad under the floor that is soaked. I have the ACs on and a fan blowing on that area. All the moisture has warped my front door so I can barely open it.

I'm using a guy who lives out in the hood to do the work. He came highly recommended by the people out there.

I can't get over all the GOPpers saying it's our constitutional rights to have the assault rifles. It's our constitutional rights to have ammo containers that hold hundreds of bullets. I guess it is our constitutional rights to have the ability to blow large groups of innocent people away. Do they realize just how evil they sound? I wonder if it would change their minds if it was their loved ones who got killed? Doubt it. Their souls have been purchased by the gun people..that is..if they even have a soul.

What a disaster you have had Carol. How did your food in your freezer and fridge come out?

jan said...

I remember living there in LC and hearing that oak trees had a tremendous root system and pine trees very little - which explains why more pine trees come down in bad weather.

Carol said...

Actually Jan, pine trees have the deepest tap roots. When they were digging my swimming pool they dug down 9 feet and still didn't find the end of that root. It looked like a pine tree in the ground. I was amazed. Oaks have very shallow roots. They can fall over and rips the roots out. Pine trees usually snap or break off.

Not sure what to do about the food in my frig/freezer. I did have a little ice still in the ice trays. Some of the frozen meat was partially thawed. My frig here was warm so anything questionable will be thrown out. Haven't decided what to do about the camp yet. I don't want to even be out there until the insurance people come out to inspect everything. I'm really tired of looking at that pine tree in my driveway. My tree guys is just waiting for me to give him the word.

Carol said...

Weird thing about that pine tree they dug out of the pool area is that there wasn't a pine tree there for years. At least there was no sign of any tree at that time. The root looked like it was still good.

I read one article saying that they can go as deep as 35 to 75 feet. I think the taller the tree the deeper the root.

Carol said...

If you look in pic #2 you will see the base of a huge pine tree in front of my little shop. That is the pine tree that snapped in half.

Last night I listened to the Daily Show before going to sleep. I haven't been watching it very often because both he and Colbert are very political and I just can't do politics anymore. Not right now...too depressing. I'm not proud of that even though I think not obsessing on politics is a good thing.

But I'm still not buying your philosophy Coreen that there's nothing we can do to change anything so bend over and take it. No..not quite there yet.

Well..Jon was making fun of all those conservatives..never understood that title..talking about that this is not the time to talk about gun control. Yes..that is kinda sad funny. He pointed out that we are required to sign for pseudoephidrine at the drug store and if you get one box over your limit it sends your name to law enforcement but no biggie if you buy tons of guns and ammo. Yep..that is kinda crazy.

And that is a fact because I have seen patients in the joint who were arrested for buying more than one box of the stuff..especially if they already had a record. You know that pseudoephedrine is one of the ingredients in Meth. That Meth stuff is bad news but it can't kill as many people as fast as an assault rifle with unlimited ammo rounds in a theater. But the pseudo lobby doesn't have as much money to throw around to those crooks in our government.

Carol said...

Another crazy thing I heard on TV last night. I occasionally watch Dr Drew until he says something so stupid and I have to turn the channel. That usually happens pretty quick.

Last night some woman called in and asked how parents are supposed to do anything about their young adult children who live away from home but may be showing signs of change in behavior, like that Holmes guy was. She said that many parents have that problem but don't know what to do. She made sense.

Well..Dr Dumbass said you need to get them some mental health counseling. Yeah..like you can make you far away from home adult kid get some mental health counseling. I wonder if he ever listens to himself??

Can you see mamma and daddy telling that guy you saw in court yesterday with the orange hair that he needs to find a counselor? Holmes' parents aren't to blame! They need some sympathy and support!

jan said...

I agree Carol about the mental health issue. I do feel a lot of sympathy for the parents of Holmes because what happened in Colo is not their fault. Again, it is the GUNS folks. It is the laws about guns and who and when they can get them. We have had a couple of scary guys in the XXXX program here. One of them graduated a few years ago. He was a loony bin but with our FERPA laws, even when we all were nervous about what he might do from day to day, the faculty hands were tied. The X's are mine.

jan said...

I wondered about the guy in Colo dropping out of his PhD program. He must have been into his psychotic break then. I cannot help but wonder if some of his teachers/classmates did not see some symptoms then.

jan said...

I have been reading about the 2 Columbine shooters and heard a newsman say that the first weeks after that tragedy people were talking about the reasons for that were that they were PO'd at bullies at the school and in fact that was not the reason they went on their shooting rampage at all. So I googled that and there was some interesting info that I found. It seems that both those boys did that to try and go down in history as having been responsible for the most people killed in any one mass killing. The one they tagged as the ringleader was actually sociopathic -who was a type with no remorse or complete lack of empathy. The other was depressive and suicidal. They actually had bombs set up that did not go off but had they been successful would have killed hundreds.

jan said...

Carol, you just don't get any breaks on your weather, do you? Sorry about all your food too.

jan said...

Don't know why, but I have never liked Dr. Drew.

Carol said...

That's awful Jan. They didn't think that out very well since they would be dead and not able to enjoy their infamy.

And speaking of sociopaths, I had this guy in my office today making a pitch for some drugs to make his stay more tolerable. He's been there a while and I'm pretty sure he's spent a good bit of his life in jail.

My mental health coordinator/counselor told me he was going to be trying for some drugs. He told me he had tormented small dogs and kittens when he was young, running over them with a lawnmower. He also said he and tried to choke his young niece. He was real casual about what he was saying. Ick! I've seen the guy many times before and he never said anything like that before.

I told him that that behavior was classic sociopathic and there really isn't any drugs that could treat it. Jail was pretty much where he belonged. I think he was just trying to manipulate me and it didn't work.

Carol said...

Dr Drew is a board certified internist and addiction medicine specialist and TV personality. He tries to come off as a Shrink but he misses that boat by a long shot.

Carol said...

I just got a call from my Allstate adjuster. He won't be here until Friday afternoon. The camp insurance adjuster will be here tomorrow morning. There was a lot of damage in the area. Without news, I wasn't aware of that. I read that it was reminiscent of Rita. I certainly had visions of Rita this weekend but the power wasn't out that long..three weeks.

They did report a path of one tornado here but they didn't include my area. No doubt in my mind that it was a tornado that did my damage. It was too spotty. That tornado just reached down and snagged that pine tree. If it had been straight line winds, my pool would have been full of tree stuff and there were only a couple of small branches from the pine tree in it. I had my pool guy vacuum it yesterday. I was just too pooped to do it. It was not bad for having gone over two weeks.

The way the camp roof was pulled up wasn't even from the direction the straight line winds would have been coming from. It was sucked up from the middle and twisted.

For the last month there has been reports that with the tropical weather we've had there was a possibility of tropical funnel clouds but not the tornadoes that stay on the ground.

You can bet that the next time one of those bad thunder bumpers heads our way, the Mags and I will both be under the bed or maybe on the floor by the fireplace. Don't you usually see fireplaces still standing after a tornado?

jan said...

I don't think being by a fireplace is a good idea. I think under a mattress is the better idea.

jan said...

Christian Bale (star in Dark Knight...) is in Aurora visiting families.

Carol said...

It is kinda interesting to hear all the possible explanations for Holmes behavior in court yesterday. Some believe it was an act. Even thought I do believe the guy is seriously mental, I think what he was displaying was extreme sleep deprivation. I'm sure he was being interrogated for hour upon hour and those isolation cells in jail are not conducive to a good night's sleep. There's a lot of noise in the area where the isolation cells are and they house other inmates with mental disorders who are usually making much of that noise.

Carol said...

Jan, I'm not strong enough to pull my mattress over much less get under it.

Those storms have been moving thru so often and so fast that I would have to make a mattress tent to hang out in. Poor Maggie has taken to staying under something for weeks now. She only comes out to eat and go outside.

jan said...

Poor Maggie. Animals are good at self protection and survival. I say when another storm comes through, follow Maggie.

Carol said...

Nah Jan, Maggie's tent to too small for the two of us and I can't squeeze under my couch. I've got it blocked off to her as best I can because I'm afraid she will get stuck under there and I won't be able to get her out without hurting her.

This is not the first time a small tornado went through my yard. I had one years ago that picked off a couple tree tops and knocked over my back fence. That was when I had that fence war with one of my neighbors.

Carol said...

Being powerless this weekend, I missed alot of what was going on. Colbert showed where this Douce guy on some news show, he must be related the the Fox Friend's guy because he looked like him, was saying that they were considering banning costumes from theaters. Let's not even mention any form of gun restriction but we need to control costumes in theaters. Actually the shooter didn't come in with a costume, he slipped out the back exit, propped it open, and went out to his vehicle to put on his costume and get his arsenal. So..they really need to ban exits from theaters. I am kidding people.

Ya can't make this stuff up. And leave it to Jon and Stephen to find all the crazy shit in the news. Lately there's far too much of it. With 24 hour news coverage, there's about 23 hours of dumb shit. When I listen to some of these people, I still keep wondering whether there is some kind of mind control/pod people stuff going on. I know that sounds crazy but what else explains it?

We can restrict sudafed, trans fats, oversized sodas, etc..because they are dangerous but we can't restrict assault rifles and massive rounds of ammo???? Someone please explain this and make sense of it.

I was debating one of my buds at work, who is educated and professional but feels the need to support the "conservative" point of view. It is the point of view that is most compatible in my community especially in my particular workplace. She really couldn't hold up her side of the argument.

Carol said...

And another episode in the..you can't make this shit up. One of my guys showed all the lies used in both sides of the presidential campaign ads. Said this was perfectly legal but showed how they fined this poor company over 3 million dollars for saying in their ad that this chocolate nut spread was a healthy way to start your day.

Carol said...

Sorry about A-Rod Coreen. I heard he sustained a non-displaced fracture of his left 5th metacarpal when that ball hit him. Same exact kind of fracture I had of my right hand when I slammed it into my door facing back just before I broke two bones in my left foot.

He will be out for 6-8 weeks. You can tell him that I had to use mine to write with and to use my crutches. I didn't get any time off.

There is something wrong with that story about the lab technician who was supposed to have infected so many patients with hep C. He was supposed to have taken patient's narcotics and then left the syringe with saline in it for the patients. He was leaving the syringe he injected himself with and he had hep C.

The big problem is how did a lab tech get fentanyl??? I have never heard of a lab tech having access to narcotics. And usually they don't leave narcotics laying around in syringes unsupervised. If that would have happened, those hospitals where he worked should be in big trouble and it seems he worked in many different hospitals around the country. I'm not sure I trust that new's story.

Did anyone hear that story?

Carol said...

Coreen, did that pitcher who hit A-Rod with the ball also hit other batters? Could he have been doing that on purpose?

Carol said...

Another member of the trail moves up..Horsedooty. I got a message from his family on Facebook. The problem is that I didn't know who they were talking about since it was his real name and not the handle he had on "The Trail". His real name was Lee Carmichael.

Happy Trails Horsedooty!

Carol said...

I did find the answer to my question about the Yankee batters that were hit by that pitcher the other night. It seems that he hit three batters but the Yankees didn't think it was on purpose. All the answers are here on the "Net". All you have to do is Google the question.

Night before last I got a call from the jail asking me if a contact lens can get behind the eye. I said no. The deputy told me that one of the inmates said his did because he lost it and felt like it was behind his eye.

I Googled the question and found that it probably got folded in half and was under the upper lid. I called the deputy back to tell him what might have happened and what to do. He had already found it.
That was exactly what happened.

I had already received about 7 calls that night. I told the deputy that I was going to bed and he might try Google if he can't get in touch with me.

Carol said...

I don't think 2012 is the end... but I think that it might be the year that tests our metal. Only the strong survive!

Stay strong!

Carol said...

That storm this weekend tested me and the hardest part of the test was going without power for 42 hours.

I realize that I was very blessed. One, I wasn't staying in the camp. That would have been scary. The other blessing was that my pine tree that came down missed everything that was vital.

Carol said...

Sorry, that should have been testing our "mettle"...or if a roof..testing it's metal.

jan said...

Carol, so glad you were not in your camp when this storm came through.

jan said...

I have had a busy week. Our full time nurse is out this past 2 weeks which greatly increases my workload. I keep having to remind my boss I only work 15 hours a week. I think he ignores me.

We are also keeping our granddoggy, CeCe and have had our 11 GD for 2 days. She now has gone to her oldest sisters home for the rest of the weekend. Her parents have gone to Dallas for a wedding.

S*** I did it again. GRRRR

jan said...

John is taking me out to dinner tonight.

jan said...

duh! The Colo shooter was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. When it all comes out, his parents and others will have known he had a mental health problem.

Carol said...

Jan, your boss doesn't care as long as he can con you into doing the work. You're like me, we'll bitch and do it because we know someone has to.

Carol said...

I finally got both appraisers out. Now it's just wait for the verdict. I don't think I'll get much over my deductible for the house because there was not much damage to it. I did get my tree man out to cut up the tree and he gave me a real good price on that. He's one of the adopted river rats.

I gave my guy who's going to work on the camp a cash advance to get supplies. He's going to do the roof first. Will start next week if weather allows. It will be an entire different roof on that part of the camp. The other section was changed after Rita. I had a metal roof put on that part. Now I will have a new metal roof on this section. Like I said, I was planning on doing it anyway but this put a rush on it. After the roof, they will start on the inside.

It's nice to have that tree gone. I actually got out and mowed most of the yard this afternoon. It looks so much better. I was getting depressed when I walked out of the house.

Carol said...

Jan, I couldn't tell from the new's stories if that shooter was seeing the shrink or he just taught at the university that he attended. Did you hear?

Even if ma and pa of shooter thought their kid has some mental issues there's not much they could do...even if he lived in the same town. We can have family members who we feel have significant mental issues but unless they are a danger to themselves or others, there's nothing you can do.

Carol said...

I've been eating takee outee for the past week. Sick of doing that. Didn't want to eat anything from the fridge after it was out for 42 hours. I need to get rid of all the stuff and replace it. I thought that maybe I could salvage some spring greens but they weren't even good. The insurance did give me $500 to replace the food. I didn't throw anything away in case they wanted to see it. He didn't.

Since I'm a food-a-holic and my fridge/freezer was stuffed, I bet that won't cover what I lost but...it is the max they give.

They said they will cover damage to little golf cart but he didn't have any figures on that. When I get it fixed, I'll send them the cost and get a supplement. I told 50 shades of hunk I needed him to pick it up and fix it.

I'm getting to know more of my peeps in the hood with all my repair jobs. I like that. The guy who will be doing my camp came highly recommended by the rest of the 'hood.

Carol said...

The Olympics starts tonight. Anyone going to watch?

Carol said...

Next week the Drew Peterson trial begins. Anyone remember that case? You guys know how I like to follow those trials. And yes, I have prejudged that guy. I think he is guilty as sin of killing two of his wives. He's just not a likable guy. He's got that ick factor.

Carol said...

An article I just read said that the Shooter was seeing a Shrink at the university. Then it said that there was a gag order on that info so who knows. I guess if he was, it didn't help. There's all kind of different reports on when he sent that notebook that the Shrink never received.

They found another guy who was threatening to shoot up a lot of people in Maryland. He made a lot of threats and they followed up and found a huge arsenal of weapons.

Carol said...

Well..what did you think of the Olympic opening ceremony? I thought it was interesting. I'm glad I had recorded it so I could fast forward through ALL those commercials. It seemed there was more commercial than program.

Jan, did you see that they had nurses and doctors participating in it?

Carol said...

The march of the countries moved faster than it usually does. That was nice. I think Matt said it must be because they played perkier music.

Every time I watch, I learn about new countries in the world. I would have liked to have been able to Google each to learn where they are but it moved too fast to do that.

Coreen said...

Not sure what you meant by interesting Carol...was that a good interesting or a strange weird
interesting?....

what I saw of the ceremonies (again many thanks to whoever invented the remote)...well maybe you have to be british to think it was wonderful (which apparently they did)...

I thought it was weird, boring & tedious, while a fan of the beatles, really thought again (Paul was on the grammies? & his singing was so different than in his prime) how can I say it (if he wasn't a R&R icon!!) oh well he is Sir Paul ...

& you know I have gone to see several aging rock stars & their shows have been very good...(maybe the couple of times he has been on tv it just didn't come across as well as if you were there live)

& since not a fan of british humor the entire spectacle was bizarre...enough said...

but always proud to see the U.S. Team...but then again I am one of those 'proud to be an American' that for some reason the libs/progs find so distasteful...

Carol said...

Coreen, Paul was so moved that his voice cracked. He couldn't even sing at the beginning. It got better after he sang for a while.

Yes, I record first and use my remote a lot, for almost everything. I did a lot of ffing.

I caught just the end of the Yanks game. I enjoyed watching that Eppley pitch. He has a weird throw. I Googled him and he's relatively new, isn't he?

Carol said...

And I'll just stick with "interesting".

Carol said...

Candice Delong, a well known
FBI criminal profiler to those of us who like to keep up with that stuff, said that she thinks that the Shooter was delusional and even though he most likely knew right from wrong, his delusions were a more powerful motivator for his actions. She also thinks his behavior in court Monday was the result of sleep deprivation. Even if everything else in the joint was conducive to sleep, schizophrenia isn't.

Of course, that won't get him off the hook, if anyone is worried about that. They can medicate him and still fry him.

Carol said...

She also said that schizophrenics or those with thought disorders aren't often criminal but when they do commit crimes, it usually captures headlines.

I totally agree with her assessment.

jan said...

Ditto on the shooter on everything you said Carol. I also agree on the fact that you can do nothing when someone has a mental health problem until they do something. It is too bad.

Carol said...

Most people who suffer from severe thought disorders, who can't stay at home any more, are housed in one of the very few long term care facilities or they are or in jail/prison.

I worked seeing patients in one of those few long term care facilities that house people with serious psych disorders for about 4 years. Jan, you probably remember that place..St Martin Deporres LTCF. I also have worked where most of the others live, jail/prison, for 11 years. I've learned a lot from those experiences.

Carol said...

Just finished my mowing. Now it's safe to rain again. Yesterday was the first day that I think it hasn't rained in my yard..for a month.

They are suppose to start on my camp roof next week. Right now, WU has the rain prediction low but I've seen that before and a couple of days later, it's been changed to a high precentage.

Coreen said...

'Interesting' that you were able to see some of the Yankees game Carol, didn't think it was on national feed...

Think they picked up Cody Epley on waivers from the Rangers at the start of the season...

While always happy to beat the red sox, it is a bit underwhelming, (but I do love when the guys hit those home runs...Curtis (a great pick by the Yankees)...grand slam...as Michael Kay always announces....SEE YA!!...

since they are in last place & so far this year have not given us a
run...the rivalry is kind of flat, must exist when
both teams are playing well & so far the red sox just are not...

Oh now this is a chuckle, Carol...

"And I'll just stick with "interesting"

since when are you shy about explaining your opinions!!!

Carol said...

When I moved back to the house, my bedroom furniture was moved into a different position in the room. Roomie did that. I liked it better but I had changed the side of the bed that I usually sleep on. I slept on the left side when at the camp and when here before. That left the right side for Maggie. She's always had the right side.

Since I moved back, Maggie keeps wanting to sleep on the right side.
Since I'm now there, she has been sleeping under the bed on the right side. I guess she is insisting on her own feng shui. I'll find out tonight since I decided I'd move back to the left side. It really makes no difference to me and it is closer to the bathroom.

Carol said...

Actually Coreen..."interesting" was my opinion. Can't say I was overwhelmed and I was glad I had it recorded so I could ff.

Carol said...

The Yankees were on the MLB network. I didn't find it until late. I didn't start watching the Olympic stuff until late.

Carol said...

Coreen, I never denied I was opinionated. I'm full of them but so are you sister. And our opinions usually fall at opposite ends of the continuum. But that's just my opinion.

Carol said...

Now that the yard is somewhat straight, it's time to clean out the damaged food from my fridge/freezer and restock. I think I will go light on the restocking. It's still storm season.

Carol said...

USA USA USA USA!

Carol said...

And anytime I can give you a chuckle Coreen, I'm happy to do it.

Carol said...

Watching women's basketball right now. I heard they have a better chance of winning than the men's team has. I also heard there are more women competing in the Olympics than men. With some of the other men/women stats I've heard this year, you'd think it would be the year of the woman but...there are those who keeping putting out a foot to trip us up.

Carol said...

This basketball game..USA vs Croatia is a barn burner.

Now it's soccer. It's fun to see Hope Solo again. It's hard to leave to go to the grocery store.

Carol said...

Jan, do you have anymore nice family photos? Or Coreen, how about your trip out with your friends? I'm tired of looking at that tree here also.

Carol said...

Phelps was a disappointment but I wasn't surprised. He no longer had that fire in his belly.

jan said...

I had a surprise the other day. I am on FB with about 52 people - not many- in comparison with my close friends and family. All of my FB friends are family and close friends -the great majority are family as we are a big family - which includes my 3 sons, their wives and my grandchildren, my sister and her children and brother's wife and all their children. That leaves a little room for friends which includes you Carol. Oh yes, I am FB friends with several of John's family. Anyway, I noticed last week that this one woman kept showing up on my husband's daughters posts and an dear friend from HS's posts. My step daughter lives in Virginia and my HS friend lives in Massachusetts. So this one woman named Signe Friedrich kept showing up on both their posts. So I wrote them both and told them - so it turns out that my HS friend from Claremore is the mother of the friend of my step daughter. It reminds me of the movie "6 degrees of separation."

jan said...

John, being a swimmer, has followed Michael Phelps closely and we both have felt that he does not have the "fire in his belly" for swimming any longer. I cannot say that I blame him. He lived and breathed swimming all those years of training. John was a competitive swimmer through jr and sr HS and in college. He still swims as part of his workout but he does not enjoy getting in the water for recreation.

jan said...

Again, I am just not that much into sports, even the olympics. Good you all are enjoying the Olympics.

Carol said...

That's interesting Jan. Some things about Facebook seem silly to me but it does provide opportunities to connect to new people or reconnect to old friends. I found you again.

Carol said...

Jan, I've gotten more into watching sports in my old age. Never wanted to before. I think when I was younger, I was felt resentment that I could never compete in any sports when I was a kid and I was very athletic. They just didn't have anything girls could do in this area except play rec softball and with mom working that really wasn't even an option.

I think there were several things that I could have excelled in but never had the opportunity. The only sports we had was during PE class. Watching sports stirred up those resentments.

Now, that just getting from one place to the other is a challenge, I've gotten over it. I can achieve an aerobic heart rate just watching.

Carol said...

I think you're right about Phelps. He gave up a lot of life, for much of his life, for his sport. He wants to do other things. I don't blame him one bit. His mom, on the other hand, is still obsessed. She needs to get over it.

Carol said...

One of the things I like the most about the Olympics is the athlete's inspiring stories.

Coreen said...

Here's a new post...

jan said...

Carol, you are 'right on" about Phelps' mother. She needs to get a life herself instead of living through her son's life.
